After returning to the Imperial Palace, Su Yuning was given lodgings in Nanku Yueli's former chamber and was deeply respected due to her status. Soon after, Empress Nanku Mingyi presented Su Yuning with a wedding dress, congratulating her on the joyous occasion of her impending marriage to Muyun Sheng, a union decreed by Emperor Muyun Qin. Su Yuning, however, refused to accept the dress, unequivocally stating that Muyun Sheng was not the man in her heart.

Nanku Mingyi laughed at Su Yuning's perceived greed, claiming that only the heartless could find happiness in the cold palace. Nanku Mingyi further confessed her delight that Muyun Sheng also opposed the marriage, as his suffering would serve as a lifelong torment, repaying all that Yinrong had "owed" her. Meanwhile, Muyun Luan returned to Tianqi City by imperial decree after an absence of over twenty years.

Reflecting on his long exile, he told his butler that despite his success in bringing peace and prosperity to Wanzhou, neither his father nor Muyun Qin wished for him to remain in Tianqi City, revealing his deep-seated ambition and refusal to submit to his brother. Muyun Luan then visited the dilapidated old Nanku mansion, where the sight of flowering branches brought back memories of meeting a "bright woman" there in the past.

He coldly mused that Tianqi City would soon face turbulent times. Later, at the Kyushu Inn, Muyun Luan met with Muyun De and Mo Yuchen. Muyun Luan was visibly displeased that Muyun De had recognized Mo Yuchen as his "adoptive father."

Muyun De explained he had been busy severing business ties with the Nanku family and hadn't had time to report it, adding that he had made Mo Yuchen his "adoptive father" to enlist the Chenyue clan's services for Muyun Luan.

Despite Muyun De having prepared a separate, exquisite residence for him, Muyun Luan insisted on staying at the Kyushu Inn, citing the convenience and better access to information, while also expressing his unease about Muyun De's close relationship with Mo Yuchen. Muyun Luan's distrust stemmed from Muyun De's past failures, and he questioned Muyun De's true intentions regarding his study of secret arts and the failed attempt to forge the imperial seal.

Muyun De, deeply fearful, knelt and reaffirmed his loyalty, blaming Muru Suo for the incident and denying any intent to harm Muyun Luan. Muyun Luan, while outwardly accepting Muyun De's explanation, harbored suspicions and feigned concern about handling the forged imperial seal matter. At this juncture, Qin Ming, Emperor Muyun Qin's favored attendant and head eunuch, arrived to deliver an imperial summons for Muyun Luan to enter the palace the next day.

Having received past favors from Muyun Luan, Qin Ming was receptive when Muyun Luan gifted him the luxurious residence Muyun De had prepared, instructing Qin Ming to ask Muyun De for more gold if needed, and demanded Muyun De accompany him to the palace. The following day, Muyun Luan and Muyun De entered the palace and found Emperor Muyun Qin painting Empress Nanku Mingyi, who was dressed in black, in the imperial garden.

Muyun Luan's clever words pleased Muyun Qin, who then showed him the painting. Muyun Luan immediately recognized the depicted woman as Yinrong, not the Empress. Nanku Mingyi was shocked by this revelation but promptly claimed the painting in Yinrong's name. After she left, Muyun Luan and Muyun Qin sat together in superficial harmony, each with their own thoughts. Muyun Luan then requested Muyun Qin to meet Muyun De, under the pretense of a family reunion.

After Muyun De paid his respects, Muyun Luan demanded Muyun De confess his involvement in the forged imperial seal incident, implicating him in Muyun Hego's downfall. Muyun Luan explained that Muyun De, as the head of the Wanzhou Chamber of Commerce, was connected to the seal's creation by the Heluo craftsmen.

He further revealed that the fake seal was from a former dynasty, not the Jiuzhou Imperial Seal, and earnestly requested severe punishment for Muyun De, despite forging a seal being a capital crime. However, Muyun Qin, considering Muyun De was Muru Ping's son, leniently chose not to pursue the matter further, merely confiscating five years of the Wanzhou Chamber of Commerce's income and immediately appointing a supervisor, warning that there would be no leniency next time.

After leaving the palace, Muyun Luan explained to Muyun De that this was the only way to ensure their safety, banking on Muyun Qin's consideration for Muru Ping. Muyun De, Muyun Luan's biological son, understood his father's true motive: to teach him a lesson for his closeness to Mo Yuchen, a fact Muyun Luan implicitly acknowledged.

Muyun De harbored deep resentment for Muyun Luan's perceived unfairness and harshness, feeling unappreciated despite his efforts and believing Muyun Luan's prejudice stemmed from his birth as Muru Ping's son. Later, in the dungeon, Muyun De ordered his servants to randomly whip people, channeling his frustration and anger into the lashings. Muyun Luan later met secretly with Empress Nanku Mingyi by the river, dismissing his guards.

He confessed his enduring love for her, regretting her pain over Muyun Qin and believing things would be different if she had chosen him. He offered to abandon everything, even the empire, to restart with her, viewing the empire as mere compensation for losing her. Nanku Mingyi, however, firmly refused, stating she had no regrets about her past decision and had no turning back.

She declared Muyun Qin her lifelong obsession, her love for him so profound that she embraced living as Yinrong's proxy to battle her rival until the end, even if hate was her only weapon. Muyun Luan, equally resolute, vowed he would never give up. Acknowledging their complex emotions and their entanglement of those around them, Nanku Mingyi expressed her hatred for Muyun Sheng, and Muyun Luan promised to help her ensure Muyun Sheng would never live happily. Before Muyun Luan departed, promising to restore her former dignity and deal with Muyun Sheng, Nanku Mingyi bowed to him.
