Outside the palace, the iron-armored army and the Southern border army stood in confrontation. Fu Chou, however, deviated from his usual solemn demeanor, having a couch brought out where he casually ate and drank in front of both armies, much to Wu You's astonishment. Wu You accused Fu Chou of raising an army to usurp power, questioning how he could face the loyal soldiers behind him and the people of Northern Lin.
Fu Chou retorted by asking what contributions Wu You had made to the people while he was fighting on the battlefield, suggesting that Wu You’s current claim of pacifying the southern border as a prince was merely a tactic to secure the crown. Unwilling to engage in further verbal sparring, Wu You declared his intention to avenge his unjustly deceased father and the innocent lives lost in the southern border rebellion.
As Wu You prepared to fight, Fu Chou announced he was tired of all the slaughter and ordered his "wife" brought forward. Four soldiers carried in a woman in a wedding dress, her head veiled in red. Wu You instinctively believed it to be Rong Le. However, Fu Chou unveiled her to reveal Sun Yali, the daughter of the Central Secretary.
He declared that due to her deep affection and care for him, he would marry her today, vowing she would be his only wife. Wu You immediately demanded to know Rong Le's whereabouts. Fu Chou, with disdain, stated that since Prince Li cared so much for a woman he had cast aside, he would "gift" her to him.
Moments later, more than a dozen soldiers carried a bed draped with red veils, upon which lay Rong Le, also in a red wedding dress, writhing and moaning in agony. Fu Chou explained to Wu You that she had been poisoned with Scorpion Toxin, a venom that made its victims feel as though their bodies were burning, awakening their deepest hatred and causing them to lose all conscience as their minds became encased in ice, then swallowed by hatred.
Wu You instantly tried to rush to Rong Le's side, but Fu Chou intercepted him. He threatened that if Rong Le did not consume the antidote within an hour, she would die in excruciating pain. Without hesitation, Wu You offered his life in exchange for the cure, on the condition that Fu Chou would spare the innocent lives of the southern border soldiers behind him.
Fu Chou, with a sneer, declared that he did not want their lives; what he wanted was for Wu You to kneel and surrender to him. Distraught at the thought of Wu You humiliating himself for her, Rong Le, in a moment of clarity amidst her suffering, seized a short sword from a nearby soldier and attempted to take her own life. Fu Chou, hearing the commotion, swiftly turned and stopped her.
Believing it to be Hen Xiang trying to disrupt his plan, he whispered a chilling warning that if she dared to act recklessly again, he would make her wish for death. Witnessing the scene, Sun Yali rushed to Fu Chou's side. Recalling her past friendship with Princess Rong Le and her debt to Prince Li, she pleaded with Fu Chou to release them for her sake.
Fu Chou scoffed, asking if they would spare him in the future if he let them go now, and if she truly loved him, why would she wish to see him fall into an abyss. With that, he harshly pushed her aside and ordered his guards to take her away. Seeing this, Wu You quietly instructed Wu Yu to prioritize the lives of their soldiers and the people, and to preserve their strength no matter what transpired.
Then, before the assembled armies, he knelt and surrendered to Fu Chou. Fu Chou burst into triumphant laughter, relishing the sight of the once arrogant Wu You kneeling before him. He threw the antidote at Wu You, telling him to remember that he would always be his defeated subordinate. Wu You ignored the taunt, immediately rushing towards Rong Le with the medicine. However, Rong Le, her mind still clouded by the toxin, mistook him for Fu Chou.
Just as Wu You tried to administer the antidote, she suddenly pulled a nearby dagger and plunged it into his chest. Ignoring his own injury, Wu You quickly swallowed the antidote and transferred it to Rong Le through a kiss, then collapsed, spitting blood. As Fu Chou was triumphantly drinking celebratory wine, a soldier reported that the southern border army had retreated south amidst the chaos, protected by skilled martial artists whom they could not stop.
Simultaneously, Chang Jian urgently reported that Lady Rong Le was missing and could not be found anywhere in the manor or even Prince Chen's or Prince Li's manors. Before Fu Chou could fully process this, a heart-wrenching shriek echoed from behind him. Rong Le, having regained her senses after receiving the antidote, realized she had fatally stabbed Wu You.
Seeing the blood-stained dagger in her hand, she was overcome with such profound agony that her hair, once dark, began to turn stark white strand by strand, transforming completely in an instant. Fu Chou finally understood what had happened. The white-haired Rong Le, still clutching the dagger, stumbled towards him but collapsed after only a few steps.
Fu Chou rushed to her side, but she weakly pressed the dagger against him, ordering him to save Wu You, declaring that if Wu You died, she would not continue to live. Unseen by them, Rong Qi watched everything from a nearby corridor. Witnessing Rong Le’s humiliation and her hair turning white, he clenched the jade pendant in his hand so tightly that his palm bled, yet he remained oblivious to the pain. He knew he had no other choice.
Later, Rong Qi traveled by carriage to a secluded forest, where he received his own antidote from the Empress Dowager. He reflected that the cure infused into the dessert Rong Le ate last night would only extend her life for a year, but his deepest wish was for her to remain safe forever. He believed that no matter how great the suffering, it was insignificant when compared to life and death.
Fu Chou summoned an imperial physician to examine Rong Le. The physician took a long time to assess her condition before finally stating that Lady Rong Le had contracted a highly potent toxin. Although the poison had been neutralized, her body had suffered inevitable and heavy damage. Fu Chou, enraged, immediately dismissed him. He gazed at the unconscious Rong Le on the bed, unable to comprehend why things had gone so wrong when he believed he had meticulously planned everything.
As he tremblingly touched her now completely white hair, Fu Chou was consumed by overwhelming regret, repeatedly asking Chang Jian why it was the real Rong Le at the plaza when he had intended for Hen Xiang to take her place. Chang Jian, observing his general's despair, had to remind him that important matters still awaited his attention. Inside the palace hall, the Crown Prince and other officials anxiously awaited news.
Upon seeing Fu Chou appear, the Crown Prince immediately rushed forward, showering him with praises. Ignoring him, Fu Chou publicly issued orders for an additional ten thousand soldiers to guard the palace both inside and out, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving without his decree. He also commanded ten thousand archers to surround Zhongshan city, with orders to kill anyone suspicious or of unidentifiable origin. Next, he had Chang Jian present two trays.
From one, he took out evidence of the Crown Prince's corruption—selling titles and ranks, and causing disorder in the court. He ordered the guards to escort the Crown Prince to the Eastern Palace. The Crown Prince vehemently resisted, questioning Fu Chou's authority and proclaiming that he was the Crown Prince and this was his country.
Fu Chou directly declared that he was the son of the late Empress Fu Yuan, asserting that according to ancestral rules, the Empress's eldest son was the true Crown Prince.
From the second tray, Fu Chou produced a Golden Scroll and a Phoenix Seal, explaining that when the late Emperor enthroned the Empress, he had proclaimed to the world that if she bore an eldest son, he would be crowned Crown Prince and successor to the throne, a promise never to be changed. After examination, the officials confirmed the Golden Scroll and Phoenix Seal were authentic.
However, Sir Lin pointed out that it was widely believed Empress Fu Yuan and her son had died, thus these items alone did not prove Fu Chou's identity. Fu Chou then accused Sir Lin, reminding him of his mother's kindness and how Sir Lin failed to defend her when she was wrongly accused, now questioning his return. He then ordered Sir Lin to be taken away for interrogation, implying he was a traitor.
Witnessing this, the remaining officials promptly submitted to Fu Chou. Despite achieving his grand ambition, Fu Chou felt no joy. He confronted Sir Lin, pressing him on why the real Rong Le was at the plaza. Sir Lin questioned what he meant, stating that the original plan had always involved Princess Rong Le as the bait to easily deceive Wu You.
Sir Lin then mockingly pointed out that Fu Chou, despite claiming to love Rong Le, had failed to recognize her at the plaza, while Wu You had identified her and willingly sacrificed his life for her. Unable to refute this, Fu Chou walked away in a daze. Following these events, Fu Chou remained constantly by the still unconscious Rong Le’s side, his dreams filled with the tormenting image of her suffering at the plaza.
He felt lost, unsure of what else he could do besides guarding her. Xiao Sha, consumed by rage, intended to kill Fu Chou, but Ling Yue restrained him. She reminded him that they were the only ones left to support Rong Le, and if anything happened to him, Rong Le would be utterly alone. After two full days of unconsciousness, Rong Le finally stirred and gradually awoke.
The first words she uttered upon opening her eyes, directed at Fu Chou, were "Where is Wuyou?" and "How is he now?" Fu Chou tried to reassure her, but she recoiled from his touch, expressing profound hatred for his "fake innocence." She accused him of pretending to care while plotting to use her, of forcefully administering the toxin, and of publicly humiliating her.
She demanded he leave if he wouldn't tell her about Wu You, stating she didn’t want to look at him or talk to him, as he made her feel like a disaster as long as she was alive.
