Love in Flames of War Episode 10 Recap
> Love in Flames of War Recap
Xiao Beichen intensified his efforts to find the mole within the military. After his team arrested Deputy Chief Wang at the water transport warehouse for drinking on duty, Wang protested, claiming it was just "a little bit of wine" and he was "not absent without leave." He asserted his affiliation, stating, "I work for Chief Sun." Mo Weiyi challenged him, asking, "Do you know who rules the Ying Army?"
Xiao Beichen then ordered Wang to be tied up, assuring him he would see Chief Sun. At the Mingyuyue opera house, Xiao Beichen, Xu Zijun, and Mo Weiyi noticed they were being followed, realizing their investigation had attracted attention. Later, they discussed the discovery of defective rifles. Xu Zijun noted their similar workmanship but different serial numbers from those at Huyang Pass, suggesting Kang Jingxiong might have altered the numbers.
Xiao Beichen acknowledged this as a possibility but decided to continue tracking current clues, confident that Zheng's people would eventually approach him. Meanwhile, Chief Sun and other veterans confronted Xiao Haishan, pleading for Deputy Chief Wang's release. They argued that Beichen was "making a fuss over it" and showed "no respect for senior soldiers like us." They emphasized Wang's loyalty and service, having "risked his life with us."
Xiao Haishan agreed that Beichen was new and "doesn't know how far to go when he just gets his feet wet," but maintained that drinking on duty was a clear violation of military discipline. He assured them he was "aware of this" and dismissed them. Xiao Haishan then summoned Xiao Beichen, criticizing his aggressive methods of arresting and dismissing officers. He reminded Beichen that these men were "my brothers who risked their lives with me."
Xiao Beichen challenged his father's trust, asking, "Don't you worry that they may betray you?" He urged his father not to be "too trusting of your so-called brothers." Xiao Haishan asserted that while he knew "very well about something," Beichen needed to understand that "a slight move may affect the whole situation." He then issued an "order" for Xiao Beichen to "shelve your plan of rectifying military disciplines."
While on the road, Xiao Beichen noticed a kite shop named "Zhang's Kite Shop." The patterns on the kites looked familiar, reminding him of Lin Hangjing's drawings. Soon after Xiao Beichen left, Mu Zizheng returned to the shop. His uncle chastised him for being out, to which Mu Zizheng explained he was getting medicine for his mother, who had been coughing. His uncle lamented Mu Zizheng's mother's misfortune, having been a "rich man's wife" who married an "opium smoker."
When Mu Zizheng asked for leave to "take some classes," his uncle grew angry, scoffing, "Do you still think you're a young master? You aren't adequately fed yet. Why do you have time to study?" Mu Zizheng insisted that "Something matters more than being adequately fed," promising not to neglect his work. His uncle warned him, "If you offend people you shouldn't, you won't even know how you died!"
Madam Qi, hoping to foster a relationship between Xiao Beichen and Lin Hangjing, arranged for them to attend a puppet show, deliberately leaving them alone. During the performance, the host invited guests to try acting. Xiao Beichen seized the opportunity to express his deep feelings for Lin Hangjing, deviating from the script to declare his wish to be with her "forever, year after year, month after month."
He then embraced her, explaining that "when a man loves a girl, he will do anything for her." Later, Madam Qi urged Xiao Haishan to consider Lin Hangjing as a daughter-in-law, suggesting it would be a case of "adding ties upon ties," given his sworn brotherhood with Lin Tangsheng. Xiao Haishan, however, expressed concern about Zheng Fengqi and Lin Hangjing's state of mind, noting her preoccupation with her imprisoned father.
Madam Qi agreed to discreetly ask Lin Hangjing about her feelings. During breakfast, Madam Qi subtly broached the topic of marriage with Lin Hangjing, proposing her as a daughter-in-law. Lin Hangjing firmly rejected the idea, stating, "I always take Beichen as my own brother" and "I won't consider anything else now" as she was waiting for her father's return. Xiao Shuyi vehemently opposed the suggestion, advocating for Zheng Fengqi.
Embarrassed, Lin Hangjing excused herself, followed by a frustrated Xiao Beichen, who slammed the table. Later, Xu Zijun and Mo Weiyi found Xiao Shuyi at a coffee shop. She shared her frustration about Lin Hangjing's refusal, threatening to "telegraph Fengqi and tell her about it." Xu Zijun and Mo Weiyi dissuaded her, arguing it was "just a flippant comment" and not worth worrying Fengqi. Meanwhile, Xiao Beichen, feeling dejected, was feeding fish at Mingyuyue.
His friends offered advice: to win a girl back, he needed to "drop your pride and keep chasing her actively," repeatedly emphasizing, "If you don't chase her actively, you'll be single forever." Annoyed by their persistence, Xiao Beichen abruptly left. Mu Zizheng and his mother faced eviction for overdue rent, with their landlord, Mr. Wang, resorting to threats. Lin Hangjing arrived and intervened, paying their rent and telling the landlord to "Don't harass them anymore."
The landlord rudely questioned her friendship with "such poor people," prompting Mu Zizheng to defend Lin Hangjing. After the landlord left, Mu Zizheng promised to repay the money "as soon as possible," feeling like her burden. Lin Hangjing reassured him, saying, "There's no hurry. Your mother's health matters most," and encouraged him to "feel free to trouble me" as a friend.
She also secured a higher-paying freelance translation job for him, to which he gratefully thanked her for "caring about my problem" and being his "only friend in Beixin City." That night, Xiao Beichen visited Lin Hangjing, asking her to meet him at Yundai Bridge at two the next afternoon, promising to tell her something there. Lin Hangjing wondered if he intended to "make fun of you again."
The following day, Xiao Beichen prepared a romantic surprise at the bridge, complete with roses. However, Lin Hangjing was still with Mu Zizheng. Remembering her appointment, she quickly excused herself, but Mu Zizheng insisted on walking her part of the way, as it was starting to rain. Xiao Beichen waited for four hours in the rain, becoming increasingly disheartened as Lin Hangjing never arrived. Lin Hangjing and Mu Zizheng, caught in the heavy rain, realized the kites were still out.
They rushed back to the kite shop, sharing Mu Zizheng's coat. As Lin Hangjing nearly fell while collecting kites, Mu Zizheng instinctively caught her. Xiao Beichen, who had followed them, witnessed the embrace and, in a fit of rage, kicked Mu Zizheng to the ground. He then turned on Lin Hangjing, accusing her of hypocrisy, saying, "What kind of friend holds you in broad daylight? No wonder you pretend to be pure in front of me."
Lin Hangjing retorted, "Why must I explain to you who I like or what kind of friends I have?" Mu Zizheng challenged Xiao Beichen, asking, "What kind of man are you, harassing a girl? Come and get me if you're hard enough!" Enraged, Xiao Beichen drew his gun, but Lin Hangjing threw herself in front of Mu Zizheng, declaring, "if you want to kill him, kill me, too!"
Xiao Beichen violently shoved her aside, then forcibly carried her to his car. In the car, Xiao Beichen confronted Lin Hangjing, accusing her of betrayal and demanding to know how she could be so "heartless" after he "waited for you in the rain." Lin Hangjing calmly stated, "I didn't promise I would go," and denied fooling him. He angrily brought up the Lingxi Lantern Festival, asking, "You completely forgot what happened at Lingxi Lantern Show, right?"
and insulted her, implying she would embrace someone she disliked. Lin Hangjing retorted, "why don't you ask your two friends?" and revealed, "If it weren't for them, I didn't want to and I wouldn't appear in front of you." She then jumped out of the car. Back at the kite shop, Lin Hangjing apologized to an injured Mu Zizheng. He brushed it off, saying it was "not your fault" and he would recover.
Mu Zizheng then observed that Xiao Beichen's actions suggested he saw Lin Hangjing as "not only as his sister." Lin Hangjing explained it was "some misunderstanding between us," clarifying that his friends had made a mistake. She reiterated her priority, stating, "My father is still in prison. As his daughter, I only expect to be reunited with him early. I'm in no mood for love."
