Han Yansheng’s face changed instantly as he saw the photos and videos displayed on the big screen. He stared coldly at Jian Dan and accused her sharply, asking who she thought she was to interfere in his dreams and his personal affairs. He then turned and walked away without looking back, leaving Jian Dan standing there, unsure what to do. Gu Entong observed this from afar, feeling a hidden satisfaction.
As winter break approached, Mi Fen announced her plans to go sketching in Mingshan with Yuan Sen, while Jian Dan shared that she would return to her hometown to visit her grandmother. Monkey relayed these plans to Han Yansheng, but he seemed indifferent. Monkey also tried to invite Han Yansheng to hang out over the break, but he declined. Later, Monkey asked Han Yansheng to inquire about his girlfriend's roommates' winter break plans, specifically asking about Jian Dan.
Han Yansheng confirmed that Jian Dan was also going home. Upon arriving home, Jian Dan’s grandmother greeted her with great joy and had prepared many of Jian Dan's favorite dishes. Just then, a courier delivered a package, which Jian Dan discovered was from Han Yansheng. Inside, she found medicine for heart disease.
Her grandmother, realizing she could no longer hide it, confessed that Han Yansheng had known about her chronic heart failure for a while and had been helping her purchase the medication. The next day, Jian Dan took her grandmother's medical report to the hospital, where the doctor confirmed her grandmother's condition was serious and required immediate surgery, noting that the cost would be substantial.
Mi Fen called Jian Dan, enthusiastically describing a beautiful waterfall in Mingshan and asking Jian Dan to send her regards to her grandmother. Jian Dan’s voice sounded troubled, but she claimed to be fine. Back home, Jian Dan informed her grandmother about a good school social practice activity that offered a stipend and valuable social experience, expressing her desire to participate. Her grandmother, though concerned about the work, agreed.
Her grandmother also prepared some local specialties for Jian Dan to give to Han Yansheng as a thank you for his help. Jian Dan then returned to school with her luggage, but the dorm lady refused her entry, explaining that school regulations required advance application, despite Jian Dan’s earnest pleas about an urgent situation. During the winter break, Han Yansheng and Gu Entong volunteered at a nursing home. Fellow volunteers noted their good teamwork and long-standing dedication.
Gu Entong expressed regret that she couldn't volunteer more due to her part-time job. Afterward, Shi came to pick up Gu Entong in his boss's car. Han Yansheng mentioned he had plans to game with Monkey later. On their way, Shi and Gu Entong spotted Jian Dan handing out flyers for a chocolate pudding cake shop. Shi offered her a ride, but Jian Dan said her nearby budget hotel was just two stops away.
As they prepared to leave, Shi’s car wouldn't start. He recalled his boss mentioning battery issues. Jian Dan asked if he had a spare, located it in the trunk, and managed to temporarily fix the car. She advised taking it to a repair shop to be safe. Shi and Gu Entong invited her along, and she agreed after quickly changing her clothes. At the repair shop, the owner informed them the car wouldn't be ready until the next day.
He was impressed by Jian Dan's ability to fix the car, especially after she mentioned having worked on tractors. When Jian Dan inquired about the "help wanted" sign and the offer of free accommodation, the owner hesitated, citing that his staff were all men. However, after Shi advocated for Jian Dan and Jian Dan assured him she was capable, the owner agreed to hire her. Jian Dan decided it was best not to tell Han Yansheng about her new job.
Later, while playing a game with Monkey and Han Yansheng, Shi casually asked Han Yansheng if he had contacted Jian Dan recently. Han Yansheng replied that he hadn't. Shi then mentioned that his boss’s car was at the repair shop and asked Han Yansheng to pick it up the following day as he had other commitments.
The next day, when Han Yansheng arrived to collect the car, he was surprised to find Jian Dan there, covered in grease, working on a vehicle. He offered her financial assistance, but she insisted on earning her own money, stating she found the job "pretty good" despite Han Yansheng’s implied disapproval. Later, Monkey noticed Han Yansheng seemed preoccupied.
He told Han Yansheng that he had seen Jian Dan handing out flyers and suspected she might be facing financial difficulties, possibly related to her grandmother's illness. Monkey then revealed that Jian Dan was living in the repair shop's dorm, surrounded by male employees, which he considered unsafe. He reminded Han Yansheng that his aunt, Jiang Zhishan, had been studying abroad for over a year, leaving her house empty and requiring regular cleaning.
Taking Monkey's advice, Han Yansheng went to the repair shop and presented Jian Dan with a "housecleaning service contract" for his aunt Jiang Zhishan's house. He explained that his aunt's previous cleaner had quit, and he needed someone to live there, clean, and look after the place. He emphasized that this was a job, not charity, and urged her not to refuse.
Seeing no other viable option after being informed that two new male employees would be sharing her current dorm space, Jian Dan signed the contract. Jian Dan then brought Han Yansheng the local specialties her grandmother had prepared for him. She thanked him for the medicine he sent her grandmother. He admitted he wasn't intentionally hiding it, and she confirmed her grandmother had asked him to keep it a secret.
Han Yansheng, finding the cured meat troublesome to prepare, asked Jian Dan to cook it for him, promising to come over for dinner. That evening, he arrived as promised. Jian Dan had prepared several dishes using the cured meat. Han Yansheng ate with enjoyment but, to tease her, claimed the food was "not bad" but "a bit off from his standard."
He asked when she learned to cook, and Jian Dan explained that she started around age ten after her parents' accident, wanting to help her ailing grandmother who was working hard to support them both. Han Yansheng was visibly moved by her story. Jian Dan then noticed a group photo on the table and asked about a person she didn't recognize, though she had seen him in a video from Gu Entong.
Han Yansheng gravely explained that it was Nan Yuan, his best friend, who had passed away. He recounted a past diving accident where their equipment malfunctioned; Gu Entong had given the spare to Han Yansheng, but Nan Yuan tragically did not survive. Another day, Gu Entong suggested to Han Yansheng they go watch a new movie, but he said he had plans for the evening.
Later, Han Yansheng bought razor shells after Jian Dan mentioned it was her best dish, asking her to cook it light. He later ordered a large quantity of meat online, telling Jian Dan that she would be responsible for grilling while he would eat. Meanwhile, Jian Dan's colleagues suggested celebrating payday with a big meal, but she declined, planning to treat Han Yansheng to barbecue, having heard about a 50% discount at a new BBQ restaurant.
On the last day of the volunteer activity, Gu Entong organized a celebratory dinner and invited Han Yansheng, who agreed to attend but warned he might be late. Jian Dan arrived at the BBQ restaurant first, hoping to surprise Han Yansheng. However, when a waiter offered her a shared table, she spotted Han Yansheng, Gu Entong, and the other volunteers already seated at a nearby table.
Shocked and disheartened, Jian Dan declined the shared table, stating she wouldn't eat, and left. Shortly after, Han Yansheng abruptly stood up, telling Gu Entong he had to leave. Gu Entong tried to dissuade him, pointing out that it was inappropriate to leave when everyone was celebrating, but he insisted and departed.
