Jiang Yuelou, now out of the mental hospital, contacts Commissioner Bai. He informs the Commissioner that Jinma Hall has been re-established, albeit on a smaller scale, and is now led by Sun Heying, the twin brother of Sun Heming, who has returned from Beiping. Jiang Yuelou also relays that San Ye might soon agree to a meeting with him, promising to reach out again with any further developments.
Meanwhile, Sun Heying, disguised as a driver, escorts Mrs. Bai to a secluded location. Introducing himself as a friend of the late Mrs. Jiang, he implies knowledge of Mrs. Bai's secrets. When Mrs. Bai expresses disinterest, Sun Heying threatens to take his information to Commissioner Bai. He then changes tack, offering to help Mrs. Bai achieve her desires, including revenge against Bai Jinbo, and promises a large sum of money for her to live abroad. Mrs. Bai agrees.
Sun Heying then instructs her to discreetly place a colorless and tasteless "drowsy pill" into Bai Jinbo's tea, explaining that it is not meant to kill him but to make him semi-conscious for questioning. He reassures her that she will not be exposed, as they will depart before Bai Jinbo fully awakens. Despite his recent injury, Chen Yuzhi insists on returning home to feed his cat, as neither he nor Jiang Yuelou is there to care for it.
Chu Ran accompanies him, and they stop at a nearby wonton shop, reminiscing about a past visit with Jiang Yuelou. Realizing they both forgot their wallets, Chu Ran heads back home to retrieve them. Unbeknownst to them, Sun Heying, having tracked Chen Yuzhi’s whereabouts, brings Jiang Yuelou to the wonton shop. Sun Heying hands Jiang Yuelou a gun, instructing him to kill Chen Yuzhi with a single shot.
Jiang Yuelou enters, points the gun at Chen Yuzhi, and fires, causing widespread panic. As Chu Ran returns, she sees Chen Yuzhi on the ground and Jiang Yuelou holding the gun. Jiang Yuelou then aims the gun at Chu Ran. Sun Heying appears, urging Jiang Yuelou to show no mercy, but Jiang Yuelou lowers his weapon, declaring that he never harms women. Qiu Ming reports to Zhan Junbai that Jiang Yuelou’s shot was a direct hit to Chen Yuzhi’s heart.
Zhan Junbai interprets this as Jiang Yuelou's firm decision to rebel and schedules a meeting with him for the following morning at ten o’clock at their customary location. Zhan Junbai also inquires about Mrs. Bai's progress, and Qiu Ming confirms that the situation is under control, and Mrs. Bai will notify Sun Heying once her task is complete. That evening, Sun Heying visits Jiang Yuelou.
Although internally fearful and worried that Chen Yuzhi might actually be dead, Jiang Yuelou manages to compose himself outwardly. Sun Heying informs him that San Ye is pleased and has agreed to meet him the next day. The following day, Sun Heying escorts Jiang Yuelou to the meeting, where Jiang Yuelou finally discovers that San Ye is none other than Zhan Junbai. Jiang Yuelou admits to being both surprised and yet finding it logical.
He acknowledges Zhan Junbai’s skill in maintaining his disguise, having harbored suspicions before, but admitting Zhan Junbai cleverly diverted them. Jiang Yuelou states that Zhan Junbai is the only person in Jing City possessing such intellect and resolve. He then directly confronts Zhan Junbai about his true motives, linking the operations of Jinma Hall, the Dahua warehouse, and Commander Zhan’s recent troop deployment, concluding that Zhan Junbai’s ultimate aim is political power and control.
They briefly discuss Jiang Yuelou’s mother, with Jiang Yuelou seemingly accepting her death as a path she chose, only facilitated by Zhan Junbai. Jiang Yuelou expresses his desire to work directly with Zhan Junbai as an equal partner, rather than through Sun Heying, whom he finds lacking. Zhan Junbai agrees that he needs a capable partner but insists on using Sun Heying as an intermediary for certain sensitive matters.
Jiang Yuelou, growing impatient, presses for clearer instructions, but Zhan Junbai reiterates that Jiang Yuelou’s current identity makes public appearances unwise, asking him to wait until the current turmoil subsides. Meanwhile, Chen Yuzhi is rushed into surgery. Shortly after, the doctor informs Chu Ran that they have done everything they could and advises her to grieve, implying Chen Yuzhi’s death. Zhan Junbai later receives a report from Qiu Ming confirming Chen Yuzhi’s demise via Sun Heying.
After hearing the news, Jiang Yuelou appears outwardly calm, managing to evade Sun Heying’s surveillance to take a walk before returning to his hotel. Upon his return, he orders a case of alcohol. Sun Heying's subordinate later reports to Zhan Junbai on Jiang Yuelou's behavior. While Jiang Yuelou appeared outwardly calm after hearing the news, his subsequent order for a case of alcohol presented a perplexing contradiction to Qiu Ming and Zhan Junbai, given Jiang Yuelou’s usual ruthlessness.
Simultaneously, Zhan Junbai visits Fu Cheng, also known as Boss Yu, who provokes him by questioning his "bottom line" and accusing him of hypocrisy. In response, Zhan Junbai orders crab roe for Fu Cheng and summons a doctor. The doctor later informs Zhan Junbai that Fu Cheng is gravely ill with a severe throat condition and hemoptysis, and may not survive another month.
It is then revealed through a flashback that Jiang Yuelou had carefully orchestrated the shooting with Chen Yuzhi. Jiang Yuelou explained that he would skillfully fire a shot that appeared to be a fatal blow to the heart but would actually only graze it, leaving Chen Yuzhi with a chance to survive, albeit in a precarious state due to the bullet's proximity.
This deception was designed to secure Jiang Yuelou an opportunity to meet San Ye and launch an undercover operation to restore peace in Jing City. In return, Chen Yuzhi was to become a "living dead man," remaining hidden until San Ye's eventual downfall. The flashback concludes with Chen Yuzhi asking Jiang Yuelou what would happen if he missed. This confirms that Chen Yuzhi is not actually dead, and their elaborate plan was successful.
