Jin Xiaoyu had previously seen news of Qian Cheng's heroic action online, which referred to a recent incident. At that time, Qian Cheng and Ye Lai were kidnapped together. Qian Cheng, being resourceful, had a hidden cellphone and managed to call Qian Tu. The location of the warehouse was then found. When the kidnappers were distracted by money, Qian Cheng seized the opportunity to escape with Ye Lai.

As the perpetrators pursued them relentlessly, Qian Cheng decided to hide Ye Lai in a room to wait for rescue, while he alone diverted the kidnappers. Qian Cheng, still a student then, was no match for the ruthless criminals. Just as he was falling from a height, Jiang Baiju swiftly rushed forward, acting as a human cushion for him. Qian Cheng sustained injuries, breaking an arm and a leg, and was hospitalized for three months.

Although he fully recovered physically, the traumatic experience left him with post-traumatic stress disorder. Dao Ruifeng drove Xiaoyu to a sanatorium, where she met his grandmother, Madam Dao, a woman with white hair but still retaining her charm. Madam Dao showed Xiaoyu a yellowed photo album filled with pictures of herself and Jiang Baiju. Recalling the past, her face was filled with joy.

Yet, a trace of sadness flickered in her eyes as she thought of Jiang Baiju, who, despite living for so many years, had never truly integrated into ordinary life. He couldn't experience the joys and sorrows of existence, and for him, concepts like kinship, love, and friendship only brought more pain. The gift of immortality, she mused, only made him an eternal observer.

Madam Dao then presented an agreement, hoping that Xiaoyu would accompany Jiang Baiju for the remainder of her life. Xiaoyu hesitated, even though she desired a large sum of money, signing the agreement meant accepting Madam Dao's arrangements for her future. Madam Dao revealed that Jiang Baiju's entire life had been one of constant vigilance; she had never seen him truly sad or joyful.

He seemed to be perpetually searching for answers, trapping himself in what she described as a "black-and-white horror movie." While Madam Dao couldn't stop the narrative, she believed Xiaoyu could press the pause button and even add color to his monochrome existence. Jiang Baiju enjoyed colorful things, he liked to observe people laughing and crying, and he was drawn to flashy, beautiful objects.

These experiences made him feel a sense of connection with ordinary people, making him feel like a regular person with desires and flaws. After much contemplation, Xiaoyu decided to sign the agreement, curious to discover what kind of person Jiang Baiju truly was. Upon learning that Xiaoyu would be living with them, Jiang Baiju appeared flustered.

He strongly opposed her presence, but Xiaoyu asserted her right to stay, as she had signed a contract with Dao Xiuxiu (Madam Dao), who owned the property. Jiang Baiju retorted that since she was moving in, she would be responsible for all the household chores, including the vast yard, as he did not like outsiders doing chores and felt her large payment from Dao Xiuxiu should cover it.

Xiaoyu countered that she intended to work until her last breath and jested that she might even die in his arms while watching a movie. Later that night, Xiaoyu went to get water and unexpectedly encountered Jiang Baiju. He gave her a piercing look, questioning why she would sell herself for money. Startled, Xiaoyu hurried away. As she was drifting off to sleep, the distinct sound of wolves howling filled the air.

She got up to investigate and found Dao Ruifeng standing outside her door. He handed her a pair of earplugs, explaining that the remote suburbs often had wild animals, and then he left, promising to show her the secrets of the yard once she settled in. Later, Fu Liang and Weilan visited Cai Miao's grave, where they unexpectedly found Xiaoyu.

Xiaoyu recognized Cai Miao's photograph, realizing she had performed the restorative makeup on her after the car accident, which had left Cai Miao unrecognizable. Fu Liang expressed his deep gratitude to Xiaoyu for allowing Cai Miao to have a dignified farewell. Xiaoyu believed that every life deserved to conclude in its most beautiful form. Weilan added that knowing Cai Miao's heart was still beating in another person made her less sad. Meanwhile, Tan Yueran attended a follow-up hospital appointment.

The doctor expressed concern over her health indicators, which had worsened since her mother returned home, and noted her Human Leukocyte Antigen antibody positive rate was high. Tan Yueran admitted she hadn't been sleeping well and was experiencing frequent dreams. The doctor recommended she discuss this with Director Fan, explaining that organ transplant rejection could be psychological as well as physical.

During her session with Director Fan, Tan Yueran shared a news story about an Australian heart recipient who developed a strong craving for burgers and fries, mirroring the preferences of the 18-year-old donor. She mentioned research from Arizona State University indicating that a significant number of organ recipients undergo personality changes, some even adopting traits of their donors, and raised the question of whether they become different people.

Director Fan reassured her that one organ alone isn't enough to completely change a person, attributing Tan Yueran's dreams of a handsome man to her improved health and age for dating, suggesting that "love is also the heart's driving force." Later, Tan Yueran saw a flyer for organ donation and noticed Jin Xiaoyu was listed as a contact person and volunteer for the project.

She made inquiries, learning that while donors fill out forms, final consent rests with their families, and that Xiaoyu was indeed the project head and a volunteer. Back at Buwenzhong, Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng were in the kitchen when Xiaoyu presented a folk remedy her master had prepared for her: toad skin. Dao Ruifeng was appalled, while Qian Cheng complained about being bitten by Jiang Baiju's "house-blessing turtle." They questioned Xiaoyu about a new goose in the yard.

Jiang Baiju, who was visibly afraid of the goose, joined the others in confronting Xiaoyu. Xiaoyu explained that her master had brought the goose, thinking her new home was a bungalow. Feeling guilty for the commotion caused by the various creatures and the toad skin, Xiaoyu offered to take on all the chores for the next two days.

Jiang Baiju initially insisted she leave, but Qian Cheng quickly accepted her offer, agreeing that they could "chuck her out" after she completed her tasks. As a result, Xiaoyu was soon found cooking for the group.
