General's Lady Recap
Episode 1 Recap
In the bustling long street, a slender figure in male disguise, known as Master Jin, was surrounded by townsfolk who sought her out. Despite her masculine attire and a small mustache, her features were delicate. Master Jin engaged in lively games with the locals, always outwitting them with her abacus skills. Those who lost received her pragmatic life advice, while the winners earned her unique assistance.
An old man, Zhang, having finally won a round, asked Master Jin to open his family heirloom, a treasure chest. With ease, she borrowed a hairpin from a lady and instantly unlocked the chest, only to find it empty. Master Jin, whose real name is Shen Jin, is the third daughter of Prince Rui, but her mother's low status has led to her being ostracized.
Fearing the infamous Demon General might mistake her lock-picking skills for theft, she warned the crowd not to reveal her presence. Just then, Prince Rui's Mansion guards appeared, forcing Shen Jin to quickly return the hairpin and flee, until she was finally caught in a dye shop's backyard. Back at Prince Rui's Mansion, Shen Jin was subjected to a forceful makeover.
She sat for a portrait with a sword held to her back and servants standing by with sticks, ensuring her compliance. Prince Rui intended to send the portrait to the imperial palace, hoping to secure his daughter a position as a consort. However, no sooner had the painting left the mansion than an imperial decree arrived, commanding Prince Rui's second daughter, Shen Zi, to marry Chu Xiuming, Count Yongning.
The Count is widely known as the ruthless "Demon General" whose previous three wives all met untimely deaths. Horrified, the usually proud Shen Zi remembered her low-born half-sister, Shen Jin, who wasn't even listed in the family tree. Shen Zi, with the support of Prince Rui's principal wife, manipulated the situation.
She argued that due to the chaotic circumstances of their births, Shen Jin might actually be the "second daughter," and pointed out that the portrait sent to the palace was of Shen Jin anyway. To force compliance, they threatened Shen Jin's mother, Side Concubine Chen, trying to make her falsify the family records. Unwilling to see her mother suffer further humiliation, Shen Jin fiercely intervened, stopping the tormentors with a sword.
She then agreed to the marriage on the condition that her mother would be granted the honorary title of a court lady and never be bullied again. Shen Jin, who cherished freedom, found solace in the thought that the frontier might offer a new life, hoping her sacrifice would ensure her mother's peace. The bridal procession set out for the border.
Shen Jin's maid, Meaty, fretted about the Demon General's reputation, but Shen Jin remained resolute, declaring she would kill him if he dared to harm her. Suddenly, the procession was ambushed. Shen Jin and Meaty fled into the dense forest, terrified by the sounds of battle. A masked general on horseback, the real Chu Xiuming, swiftly cut through the attackers, whose leader cried out that they had fallen into a trap before retreating.
When silence fell, Shen Jin and Meaty emerged to find a field of corpses and realized the bridal party had abandoned them. Incensed, Shen Jin resolved to find the General's Mansion herself by following the horse tracks. After an exhausting walk, they reached what Shen Jin believed to be the General's Mansion. She banged on the gate, yelling for Chu Xiuming to come out.
When no one answered, she found a low wall and, leaving Meaty at the gate, climbed over it, boasting that no wall could stop her. Inside, she navigated the dark mansion until she found a room. Using a tinderbox she had brought, she lit a candle, only to be startled by a tall figure in the shadows. As she stumbled backward, she was caught and steadied by the man.
Mistaking his refined appearance for that of a "reading attendant," she proudly declared herself the General's Lady. Shen Jin recounted her ordeal and attempted to bribe him for information about the "devil" Chu Xiuming, whom she intended to confront. Finding him uncommunicative, she simply asked for directions to the main gate to let Meaty in. Upon reaching the main gate, Shen Jin found guards about to harm Meaty, whom they suspected of being a spy.
Shen Jin boldly intervened, asserting her identity as the General's Lady, which caused the guards to kneel. Seeing a burly, black-bearded man in charge, she immediately assumed he was the "Demon General" Chu Xiuming. She launched into a furious tirade, lambasting him for abandoning her and for being an "unparalleled ugly monster," unaware that the true Chu Xiuming—the "reading attendant"—stood silently behind her.
Meaty tried to warn her, but Shen Jin brushed her off, only realizing her mistake when the "attendant" calmly introduced himself as Chu Xiuming. His subordinates then explained the strategy: Chu Xiuming had suspected Shen Jin might be a spy from the Eagle clan, like his previous three wives, and had intentionally used her as bait to lure and destroy a formidable enemy squad. This plan offered a perfect justification to the imperial court if she were "accidentally killed." In their victorious celebration, however, they admitted they had completely forgotten to retrieve her.
Episode 2 Recap
Shen Jin, newly arrived at the General's Mansion, was dismayed to be sent to a desolate room, feeling dismissed by General Chu Xiuming and recalling how Leopard Head, one of his men, had almost killed her during the journey. Meaty, her maid, shared her fear, whispering about the General's previous wives who had met untimely deaths and speculating if their spirits still lingered.
Despite her apprehension, Shen Jin resolved to stay, honoring her promise to her mother and the imperial decree for her marriage, refusing to bring trouble upon her family. The next morning, Meaty excitedly announced General Chu Xiuming's visit, prompting Shen Jin to meticulously prepare, hoping to impress him. However, Chu Xiuming’s demeanor was cold. He pointedly asked about her shifted attitude, questioning her true purpose and revealing that a spy had been found and killed among her bridal retinue.
Shen Jin, taken aback, denied any knowledge of a spy and challenged Chu Xiuming, asking if he suspected her given the dangerous escort she received. Chu Xiuming dismissed her concerns, offering her hometown dishes and instructing her to recuperate indoors. Frustrated by the unfulfilled marriage and his suspicions, Shen Jin found herself confined to her chamber under guard, served bland food barely enough to sustain her.
Bored and confined, Shen Jin resorted to reading a storybook titled "The General's Mansion," which she had received from a man named Big Head Zhang. The book described the mansion as a former burial pit, haunted by spirits, and detailed how the "Demon General" had caused the deaths of his three previous wives. The tale terrified Meaty and spurred Shen Jin, increasingly frustrated with Chu Xiuming, to conceive a drastic plan: to fake her own death.
By doing so, she hoped to solidify his reputation as the "Demon General," making it impossible for him to explain to the Emperor, and ensure she would not become his fourth victim. Despite Meaty's desperate pleas, Shen Jin swallowed a "fake death drug" also acquired from Big Head Zhang, and her panicked maid rushed to find help. The drug, slow to take effect, caused Shen Jin to feel intensely hot and her tongue to go numb.
Seeking relief, she stumbled outside, where she was seized by two assassins. They had been ordered to kidnap Chu Xiuming's new wife and, recognizing her, planned to use her as leverage to avenge a previous defeat against the General. Unbeknownst to them, Chu Xiuming had been secretly following Shen Jin. He witnessed her collapse, seemingly lifeless, due to the drug's effects. The assassins, believing she was dead, lamented their failed plan. Chu Xiuming swiftly dispatched the two attackers.
Believing Shen Jin had truly died, he felt a profound sense of remorse, regretting his misjudgment and acknowledging her filial piety. He tenderly carried her back to the mansion, promising to look after her mother. Back in the mansion, Meaty wept inconsolably over Shen Jin's seemingly lifeless body. However, to everyone's astonishment, Shen Jin suddenly gasped for air and sat upright, complaining about the prolonged effects of the fake death drug.
As she struggled for breath, she pulled open her collar, revealing a jade pendant. Chu Xiuming, surprised, immediately demanded it. When Shen Jin refused, he forcibly snatched it from her. Enraged, Shen Jin screamed "robbery" and clung to him, prompting Leopard Head to promptly knock her unconscious. Clutching the jade pendant, Chu Xiuming surmised that it held a secret and instructed Leopard Head to keep a close watch on Shen Jin.
When Shen Jin regained consciousness, she found herself locked in her room. Meanwhile, in his study, Leopard Head proudly presented Chu Xiuming with a new lock from the Heavenly Lock School, boasting that it was impenetrable. Amused by their underestimation of her abilities, Shen Jin easily picked her own lock with a hairpin, then, as revenge, locked Chu Xiuming and his subordinate inside the study.
Shen Jin then acquired a horse from the stables, but quickly discovered she couldn't ride, struggling to stay atop as the horse ambled through the streets. At the city gate, guards, recognizing the General's warhorse but not her, accused her of horse theft. Chu Xiuming arrived just in time to intervene. Indignant, Shen Jin confronted him about locking her up and demonstrated her remarkable lock-picking skills, effortlessly opening the "unbreakable" lock.
Impressed but suspicious, Chu Xiuming probed her about her past, but she skillfully deflected his questions. Shen Jin then accused Chu Xiuming of defying the imperial decree by delaying their marriage and constantly suspecting her, threatening to report him to the Emperor. Acknowledging his fault, Chu Xiuming agreed to her terms.
Shen Jin demanded three conditions: unrestricted movement within the mansion, permission to ride his horse out of the city to reclaim her dignity at the gate, and a third condition she had yet to decide. Chu Xiuming consented, but warned that Meaty would pay the price if Shen Jin attempted to escape. When Shen Jin admitted she couldn't ride, Chu Xiuming agreed to ride with her.
Together, they rode through the city, and Shen Jin proudly announced her identity as the General's Lady to the soldiers at the gate. Once outside the city, Chu Xiuming guided the horse through picturesque landscapes, allowing Shen Jin to enjoy the outing immensely. She remarked on the beautiful scenery, and he asked if she, as his wife, worried for him. Yearning for true freedom, Shen Jin asked when that would be possible.
Chu Xiuming promised her unrestricted access to the mansion, including his private rooms, and permission to leave the estate with an escort. Overjoyed, Shen Jin requested another ride. Later, Meaty noticed a distinct change in Shen Jin's demeanor, describing her as being "in the mood for love." Shen Jin admitted the day's excitement had made her forget all about retrieving her jade pendant, resolving to get it back the next day.
The following morning, Shen Jin confronted Chu Xiuming about the bland food and asked for her pendant. He questioned its origin, and she stated it was from her mother. When pressed for details, Shen Jin, observing his keen interest, feigned memory loss, blaming her recent hunger and fear. She shrewdly demanded lavish meals and excellent service to "recover" her memory. Chu Xiuming, skeptical, gave her three days and agreed to her demands.
True to his word, he instructed Leopard Head to fulfill all of her requests. She and Meaty indulged in a joyous feast, a stark contrast to their previous sparse meals. To reinforce his earlier warning, Chu Xiuming later questioned Leopard Head about the punishment for stealing army horses, and Leopard Head confirmed that stealing the General's horse and fleeing was a crime punishable by death.
Episode 3 Recap
One morning, Chu Xiuming departed from a side gate, much to Shen Jin's delight. Seizing the opportunity, she hurried to the general's study to search for her jade pendant, turning the room upside down but finding nothing. Just then, the Vice General arrived in a hurry. He couldn't find Chu Xiuming and found Shen Jin there instead. He reported that the Eagles had attacked the city gate, and Leopard Head was leading the troops in defense.
He suspected some Eagles spies had already infiltrated the city. With Chu Xiuming absent, no one could make crucial decisions, and the General's absence was a dereliction of duty that could bring severe punishment from the imperial court. Shen Jin, understanding the gravity of the situation, quickly decided to take charge.
She proposed that the Vice General guard the city gate while she would defend the General’s Mansion and deal with any internal enemies, thereby buying time for Chu Xiuming’s return. Despite the Vice General’s concerns for her safety, Shen Jin insisted he follow her plan. Unbeknownst to them, Chu Xiuming, observing from afar, realized that Shen Jin was not a spy but someone sent by an ally to help him.
Inside the mansion, Eagles soldiers searched for Chu Xiuming, surprised to find someone in golden armor and a golden mask within the residence, immediately suspecting a trick. Shen Jin, knowing they had fallen for her ruse, attempted to draw the general's heavy sword as a show of force, but it was too heavy for her to lift. She quickly switched to her small pocketknife. The Eagles, interpreting this as a blatant act of disrespect, charged forward.
In her nervousness, Shen Jin blurted out, "This person is not Chu Xiuming!" inadvertently revealing her identity. Realizing her mistake as the Eagles soldiers intensified their attack. Just as Shen Jin was about to be overwhelmed, Chu Xiuming, armed with his sword, swiftly intervened, cutting down the Eagles soldiers with fierce precision. He then slowly approached the figure in golden armor, removed the mask, and revealed Shen Jin's face. Their eyes met, both relieved and aware of their narrow escape.
Thanks to Shen Jin’s quick thinking and delaying tactics, Chu Xiuming was able to return and defeat the remaining Eagles. That evening, the servants and staff gathered at the mansion to celebrate their victory. Shen Jin, drinking heavily, became visibly intoxicated. She wandered around looking for Chu Xiuming, eventually finding him in his room.
Shen Jin, in her drunken state, praised Chu Xiuming, expressing profound understanding for the heavy burden he carried daily—the cumbersome armor, the weighty sword, and the mask—all while fighting to protect the city. She felt a deep admiration for him, having experienced the weight of the armor herself. She then reminded him of her own significant contribution to defending the mansion, asserting her merit surpassed his and demanded his bed as a reward.
She complained that her own room felt like a "haunted house" while his was a "paradise" with soft bedding and ample space. Chu Xiuming, seeing her completely inebriated, reluctantly agreed, and Shen Jin promptly passed out. Chu Xiuming then had to find another place to sleep for the night.
Meanwhile, in the imperial court, a censor named Lord Liu reported to the Emperor that General Chu Xiuming was not in the city during the Eagles' raid, and it was his wife who had defended the General's Mansion. Lord Liu questioned how a mere woman could manage such a feat and suggested that Chu Xiuming, with his military power, might harbor rebellious intentions, fearing that his wife could be exploited.
The Emperor, after some consideration, decided against sending spies, instead dispatching a royal artist to observe and record the daily life of the "invincible general and his wife," believing this would reveal the truth without causing alarm. The next morning, Shen Jin awoke on the floor, startled to find the servants happily moving her belongings into Chu Xiuming’s room.
The servants, overjoyed by her presence, described the room as a veritable paradise and expressed their belief that she had brought life and laughter back to the otherwise dull mansion. They joyfully implied that since Shen Jin was the first wife allowed to reside in the General's room, their marriage would soon be consummated.
However, when Chu Xiuming arrived, he quickly clarified to Shen Jin that while he agreed to her moving in, he had no intention of sharing the bed. He stated their marriage was one of name only, with no actual intimacy. Shen Jin agreed with this arrangement but then challenged why she had to sleep on the chaise longue while he kept the large, soft bed.
Chu Xiuming explained that she had demanded to move in as her reward, and more importantly, if he were to move out, it would raise suspicion about their nominal marriage in the capital, potentially leading to dire consequences for both of them. They agreed to coexist in the room, with him on the bed and her on the chaise longue, defining strict boundaries not to be crossed.
Shen Jin, however, declared that all space in the room, excluding the bed itself, now belonged to her. Shen Jin noticed the household staff seemed much happier since she moved into Chu Xiuming's room. Curious, she asked Aunt Qingqiu about the rumors concerning the unnatural deaths of Chu Xiuming’s three previous wives.
Aunt Qingqiu dismissed these as mere rumors, clarifying that the general had never even met those wives in person, and Shen Jin was indeed the very first among his wives to live in his room. Later, when the royal artist arrived, Chu Xiuming introduced Shen Jin simply as "this is my wife." Shen Jin, annoyed by his lack of affection compared to his "devilish" behavior in their private disputes, decided to play a trick on him.
She asked Meaty to retrieve something, subtly implying her intention to tamper with his clothes to teach him a lesson. During the painting session, Chu Xiuming began coughing and sneezing, a result of Shen Jin’s prank. Shen Jin feigned deep concern, attributing his condition to overwork and a chill. She then took the opportunity to suggest that his spacious and soft bed was too luxurious for a general who must protect the country.
She advocated for him to sleep on the hard, narrow chaise longue instead, claiming it would help him "self-cultivate and temper his will." Chu Xiuming, however, wittily refused, stating he preferred to "degenerate" in comfort. In the days that followed, Shen Jin continued her mischievous attempts to vex Chu Xiuming.
When Meaty brought a basket of aromatic sweet potatoes, Shen Jin deliberately ate them in front of Chu Xiuming, playfully taunting him and reminding him not to "cross the border" into her designated space while he sat nearby, seemingly engrossed in a book. Later that evening, Chu Xiuming informed Shen Jin that she must attend the banquet for the artist, reminding her of her role as the mistress of the General's Mansion.
Shen Jin grumbled, complaining that she was already full because he hadn’t told her about the feast earlier. At the banquet, as Chu Xiuming was about to toast the artist, Shen Jin interrupted. Feigning concern for his health, she announced that Chu Xiuming had a severe cold and must eat lightly, presenting him with a bowl of her specially concocted herbal porridge. Despite Chu Xiuming's attempts to decline, claiming he felt better, Shen Jin insisted, securing the artist’s agreement.
She then proceeded to spoon-feed Chu Xiuming the peculiar-tasting porridge. In retaliation, Chu Xiuming declared that he was too unwell to enjoy the array of delicious dishes. Not being one to waste, he instructed Shen Jin to eat all the delicacies on his behalf. He then ordered the kitchen to prepare even more dishes, including two extra plates of Shen Jin’s favorite sweet potatoes, forcing her to consume a massive meal.
Episode 4 Recap
Having overeaten, Shen Jin found herself uncomfortably full, rolling on the bed in discomfort. Chu Xiuming, annoyed by her antics and unable to focus on his book, urged her to get up and walk around to aid her digestion. However, Shen Jin, feeling utterly bloated, protested that she could not move and even playfully suggested he give her a piggyback. He refused, telling her to walk on her own.
With a sigh, Chu Xiuming conceded, untying his waist sash and letting her hold one end as he led her around the moonlit courtyard. The quiet stroll brought a sense of comfort as the night breeze gently brushed past them. The following morning, as Shen Jin was having tea, Meaty delivered a letter from her mother. The letter assured Shen Jin of her mother's well-being and encouraged her to embrace needlework, even including an embroidery design.
Upon seeing it, Shen Jin wistfully remarked on how much she missed her mother's homemade snacks, prompting Meaty to offer to make some for her. Meanwhile, Chu Xiuming was seen anxiously pacing around his chamber, particularly around a large, mysterious pattern hanging on his wall, seemingly preoccupied with an unsolved puzzle. When Chu Xiuming saw the embroidery design, he immediately became tense, ignoring Shen Jin’s playful accusations of him overstepping his boundaries.
He ordered her to accompany him out of the city. Shen Jin initially resisted, questioning why she should obey, but he explained the grave importance of the matter. Seeing his unusual urgency, Shen Jin demanded a condition for her cooperation: she wanted to sleep in his bed, alone, while he took the chaise longue. Chu Xiuming agreed, and they prepared to depart. They arrived swiftly at a secluded tomb.
Shen Jin, who had expected to be taken somewhere pleasant, expressed her unease, fearing that Chu Xiuming might intend to bury her alive, a fate she imagined for his fourth wife. Despite her protests, he led her into a dark secret passage that opened via a hidden mechanism. Inside the subterranean chamber, Chu Xiuming turned his attention to a stone door, studying a pattern on it with a puzzled expression.
Shen Jin recognized the intricate design as the legendary Lock of Falling Flowers and Mandarin Ducks. She explained that due to her father's disfavor and her older sisters' habit of locking her in rooms, she had become an expert in opening various locks. She then recounted the lock's poignant legend: it was crafted by a great thief for the woman he loved, meant to secure a luminous pearl stolen from the palace.
However, the lady died before he could present it, and the heartbroken thief took his own life. The lock, symbolizing their tragic love, was said to be unopenable thereafter. She cheekily asked if he was not afraid that she had fabricated the tale. Chu Xiuming urged Shen Jin to open the lock. After struggling with her hairpin, she asked him to turn around.
She then plucked a strand of his hair, wrapped it around her hairpin, and skillfully opened the lock. When he asked why she used his hair instead of her own, she replied with playful indignation that it would be too painful to pull her own hair and only an idiot would do such a thing. Chu Xiuming fell silent, pondering her reasoning. As the stone door opened, it revealed a dark, chilling chamber.
The dim light of a fire starter illuminated a terrifying, snarling idol. Shen Jin shrieked in fright, accidentally poking Chu Xiuming with her hairpin, causing him to yelp as well. Before they could compose themselves, a swarm of bats swept through. Shen Jin instinctively recoiled into Chu Xiuming's arms, who shielded her and offered his cloak against the cold.
As Chu Xiuming searched the chamber, Shen Jin leaned against a back wall, inadvertently triggering another hidden mechanism that flipped a section of the wall, trapping her in a new area. Hearing her cries, Chu Xiuming followed her into the newly revealed space. Unfortunately, Shen Jin's panicked movements triggered a series of hidden arrow traps. Chu Xiuming swiftly pulled her to the ground and shielded her with his body, kicking away several incoming arrows, though one still grazed his shoulder.
Once the attack subsided, they noticed a coffin. A distinctive groove on its lid perfectly matched a jade pendant Chu Xiuming possessed. He placed the pendant into the slot, and the lid opened, revealing a wooden box containing an imperial seal. Just as Chu Xiuming picked up the seal, the chamber began to violently shake and collapse. With debris falling around them, Chu Xiuming grabbed Shen Jin, and they fled the crumbling structure, returning safely to the mansion.
Back at the mansion, Shen Jin insisted on tending to Chu Xiuming's shoulder wound. As she applied medicine, she observed the numerous scars on his back, a stark reminder of his hardships as a general. She confessed her deep concern, feeling both sorrow for his past suffering and fear of future injuries. Chu Xiuming admitted that no one had ever expressed such genuine concern for him before.
Shen Jin reflected on his surprisingly tolerant nature, a stark contrast to the fearsome "Demon General" of legend. He revealed his lenience was initially a facade to observe her, as he had suspected her of being a spy, and apologized for the misunderstanding. Moved by his admission and his protective actions, Shen Jin countered that he was the "real spy"—a kind devil and a loving general.
Confessing that despite her initial anger at their forced marriage, she had fallen in love with him, she leaned in and kissed him. After the tender moment, a blushing Shen Jin ran off, passing the Vice General who was approaching. In her room, an ecstatic Shen Jin instructed Meaty to prepare wedding candles, eagerly anticipating a proper wedding night. Meanwhile, in his study, Chu Xiuming gazed at the imperial seal, lost in thought.
His Vice General suggested asking Shen Jin directly about the mysterious person seemingly guiding her, but Chu Xiuming dismissed the idea, stating the matter was too significant to involve her further, revealing his growing protectiveness. He opened a secret compartment, placing the seal alongside a plain tablet dedicated to his aunt. He solemnly vowed to uncover the truth behind his aunt's and the Eighth Prince's deaths, believing Shen Jin’s arrival was a new lead.
Later, as Chu Xiuming practiced his sword, painful memories of his parents' tragic deaths flashed through his mind, reinforcing his resolve. His inner turmoil contrasted sharply with Shen Jin's romantic mood, who sat in her room amidst red candles, dreaming of their blossoming intimacy. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Chu Xiuming reflected that if he were to die in battle, he would hope Shen Jin would forgive him, as he would not wish to cause her heartache.
Episode 5 Recap
The morning after preparing for their wedding night, Shen Jin awoke to find Chu Xiuming gone, leaving only a letter of divorce and her jade pendant by her side. Outside, her maids, unaware of the situation, cheerfully speculated that the General and his Lady had a harmonious night. Their chatter was cut short when a furious Shen Jin stormed out to confront Chu Xiuming. At the main gate, Chu Xiuming, clad in armor, was preparing to leave.
Shen Jin rushed to block his path, demanding an explanation. She insisted his feelings for her were obvious, pointing out how his eyes, eyebrows, and nose all betrayed his affection. Chu Xiuming stoically replied that his intentions were clear in the letter, claiming a man with great responsibilities had no time for romantic attachments. Shen Jin countered, reminding him he had reciprocated her kiss in the study the previous night.
Scornfully rejecting his "lame excuses," she declared she was not someone he could simply discard. With a defiant flourish, she tore the letter to pieces, scattering them to the wind, and told him to go to his precious military camp, stating her own departure was none of his concern. With Chu Xiuming gone to the military camp for what seemed to be a long time, an incensed Shen Jin refused to accept being divorced.
As a wife wed by imperial decree, she vowed to find out the real reason for his actions. Heeding her maid's warning that she might be denied entry, Shen Jin resolved to find a way to sneak into the camp. At the camp, Leopard Head presented a new batch of recruits to Chu Xiuming for inspection. One recruit, however, swayed unsteadily and could not stand straight. Upon closer inspection, Chu Xiuming was stunned to see it was Shen Jin.
She declared herself a new recruit, arguing that the draft notice did not specify gender. Since Chu Xiuming was known for never breaking his word, he had no grounds to refuse her. He allowed her to stay but warned that she would have to pass rigorous tests to become one of his soldiers. The tests, however, were rigged in her favor.
During the first test, running with heavy sandbags, Leopard Head secretly swapped Shen Jin's bag with a lightweight one filled with cotton. For the second test, seizing a flag from Leopard Head, he easily dispatched other recruits with kicks and shoves. But when Shen Jin approached, he feigned a yawn and bent over, allowing her to grab the flag effortlessly.
Shen Jin later chided him for his blatant favoritism, but Leopard Head humbly explained he couldn't risk injuring the General's Lady. The remaining recruits, Shen Jin included, began training with small meteor hammers. Observing from a platform, Chu Xiuming grew concerned for Shen Jin's safety as recruits frequently injured each other. He called her up to spar with him personally. During their match, Chu Xiuming only dodged, refusing to retaliate, while an unrestrained Shen Jin attacked freely.
The "fight" ended with Chu Xiuming's uniform being torn, and Shen Jin feigned concern, cheekily advising him to be careful not to catch a cold. Meanwhile, in the Imperial City, an official warned the Emperor that Chu Xiuming appeared to have informants in the court, suggesting he was a potential threat. The wary Emperor ordered all communications to and from the General's Mansion to be cut off and had his agent Xiao Su put on standby.
The advising official was then secretly paid, revealing a deeper conspiracy. News of the severed communications soon reached Chu Xiuming, who wondered if the Emperor's sudden suspicion was related to activities concerning Prince Rui's Mansion. Back at the camp, Shen Jin eagerly chose a formidable spiked club as her weapon, but Chu Xiuming vetoed it and handed her a harmless broom instead. Later, finding the daily porridge too plain, she secretly added osmanthus sugar.
Chu Xiuming, suspecting the food had been tampered with, knocked the bowl from her hands, enraging her. The communal bathing also proved a major obstacle. Chu Xiuming offered her the privacy of his tent to wash and sleep, but she stubbornly refused, insisting that as a mere recruit, she should be treated like everyone else. That night, she was caught by patrolling guards while trying to sneak to the bathhouse and was mistaken for a spy.
The next day, Chu Xiuming summoned Shen Jin to his tent. She refused his offer of tea and demanded wine, promising to stop causing trouble if he complied. Knowing alcohol was forbidden, he took her to a secluded spot outside the camp. A tipsy Shen Jin complained bitterly about his cold and heartless behavior, accusing him of pushing her away despite everything she had done.
Suddenly, she spotted a lake and, ecstatic at the chance to finally bathe, threw down her flask, stripped off her outer clothes, and plunged into the water. A startled Chu Xiuming turned away, warning her of the danger of swimming while drunk. She taunted him, daring him to turn around and reminding him she was his legally wedded wife.
She declared she wouldn't get out unless he looked at her, forcing him to plead with her to come ashore for her own safety. In a private conversation, Chu Xiuming acknowledged to his deputy that Shen Jin was in the camp solely for him. He also pointed out the "not-so-small contribution" of the deputy and Leopard Head in secretly assisting her.
The deputy advised the General to feign ignorance of their help, reasoning that as a woman, she couldn't be treated like the other soldiers. Chu Xiuming agreed, confident he had the situation under control, and planned to explain the truth to her and send her back home when the time was right.
Episode 6 Recap
After nearly drowning, Shen Jin regained consciousness to find Chu Xiuming giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She immediately accused him of taking advantage of her, pointing out that since he had already issued a divorce letter that no one else knew about, she had no recourse. She threatened to expose his duplicitous nature to the entire military camp. Chu Xiuming urged her to be more reserved, but she retorted that his actions had left her homeless.
Returning to her parents' home would sadden her mother, disappoint her father, and invite mockery from her sisters. She lamented that he, the one person she could rely on, constantly bullied her and demanded a reason for the divorce. Chu Xiuming stated the divorce was final but, seeing her distress, offered to escort her home and take full responsibility.
Shen Jin accepted his pledge, and as it was getting dark, she claimed she was too weak to walk and asked him to carry her back to the camp. The next morning, Shen Jin awoke in Chu Xiuming's tent. He brought her a hangover soup he had personally prepared, assuring her no one knew.
After he left for the fields, she discovered her clothes had been changed, causing a mix of embarrassment and secret delight, which she took as a sign of his hidden affection. Meanwhile, at the mansion, Meaty learned from Mammy Qingqiu that it was Chu Xiuming's birthday. Eager to see her mistress, Meaty volunteered to deliver birthday noodles and a cartload of relief supplies, including steamed buns, a fur coat, and medicine, from the concerned household staff.
A young maid, Xiao Cong, begged to go along but Meaty sent her back, promising to take good care of Shen Jin. Upon Meaty's arrival, Shen Jin learned it was Chu Xiuming's birthday. Convinced that he was simply too proud to express his feelings, she decided to create an opportunity for him.
She first approached Leopard Head to borrow munitions for a grand fireworks display, but he firmly refused, explaining that the private use of imperial munitions was a capital offense. Undeterred, Shen Jin asked a Vice General for help organizing a surprise banquet. He also declined, citing the same concerns about the munitions and a lack of resources, but noted that her presence was the best gift the General could receive.
This sparked an idea in Shen Jin: she herself would be the surprise. Shen Jin personally cooked a bowl of longevity noodles and presented them to Chu Xiuming. He took a single bite before coldly telling her to return to the mansion. He stated her presence was a burden, making the all-male soldiers uncomfortable and angry, and that her gender created unfairness in training.
He harshly criticized her "ridiculous" behavior at the lake and her dangerous attempt to acquire munitions, warning that her recklessness would lead to military indiscipline and destroy his credibility as a general. Shen Jin vehemently defended herself, asserting she never used her status, led by example, and only had good intentions for his birthday.
When she pointed out her munitions plot had failed, Chu Xiuming retorted that it was fortunate it did, as it would have brought severe punishment upon everyone. Accusing her of disrupting order without remorse, he dismissed her, claiming she had meant nothing to him since the day she arrived. Heartbroken, Shen Jin called him a "cold-blooded, heartless demon" and declared that she was divorcing him. That night, Shen Jin returned to the mansion and began packing, determined to leave.
Despite the tearful pleas of Meaty and the household staff, she insisted Chu Xiuming truly hated her. The next morning, as she was preparing to depart, Mammy Qingqiu reminded her of a special pillow filled with precious love peas that Chu Xiuming had prepared for her. Shen Jin then abandoned all her other belongings, taking only this pillow as a keepsake before riding away. Meanwhile, back at the camp, a heartbroken Chu Xiuming was left alone in his tent.
He discovered a journal Shen Jin had left behind under the pillow she had been using. As he read her private notes detailing her observations of his lonely life and her secret desire to care for him, he also noticed one of his shirts that she had secretly embroidered with her initial. Overcome with the sudden, profound realization of her deep affection, he was moved to tears.
The next morning, Chu Xiuming was uncharacteristically late for training and appeared listless, concerning his soldiers. At the same time, the Emperor learned that Chu Xiuming had divorced the princess whom he had personally granted in marriage. Fearing a scandal that would damage the royal family's reputation, the Emperor dispatched Xiao Su, Commander of the Imperial Guards, to investigate the matter secretly. Soon after, Chu Xiuming received word that a "supervisor" was being sent to his camp.
He correctly discerned this was a pretext for the Emperor, who distrusted him, to find fault. While acknowledging the supervisor's official rank, he resolved to test their competence. As Chu Xiuming and his soldiers gathered to formally greet the supervisor's carriage, they announced their welcome three times, yet no one emerged. Just as their patience wore thin, Meaty stepped out, followed by Shen Jin, clad in a full suit of armor.
Holding up the imperial edict, she dramatically revealed herself as the newly appointed Supervisor. Stunned, Chu Xiuming and his men knelt in deference as Shen Jin, now in a position of authority, strode past him and into the main tent.
Episode 7 Recap
Upon arriving at the military camp, Shen Jin, as the newly appointed Supervisor, immediately asserted her authority. She began by questioning Leopard Head about the highest-ranking official in the camp, correcting him to acknowledge her own superior position over Chu Xiuming, the Count Yongning. Shen Jin then confronted Chu Xiuming, accusing him of disrespect. She demanded tea, but Chu Xiuming explained that the camp was not well-supplied.
He revealed that for two years, the imperial court had not provided army pay or provisions, forcing the soldiers to cultivate land for self-sufficiency and live on simple water and porridge, focusing solely on safeguarding the country. Shen Jin, sympathizing with their plight, offered to host a feast for the soldiers at her own expense, but Chu Xiuming refused, citing concerns that a sudden change in diet might make them ill.
He also forbade wine, stating it was against army regulations. Frustrated by his refusals, Shen Jin grew enraged, threatening to remove Chu Xiuming from his post and strip him of his armor. Before she could act further, Xiao Su and Rou Rou intervened, physically restraining her. Shen Jin vowed to make Chu Xiuming pay tenfold for his perceived arrogance. Xiao Su, Shen Jin's childhood friend, had helped secure her the position of Supervisor.
When Shen Jin questioned why he addressed her so formally, Xiao Su affirmed his loyalty, stating he would always be her "loyal friend" and "Master Jin," just as when they were young troublemakers. Meanwhile, in a tea house, imperial officials discussed Chu Xiuming's divorce from Shen Jin. General Zuo and Lord Liu deduced that the Emperor's decision to appoint Shen Jin as Supervisor indicated distrust towards Chu Xiuming.
They saw this as an opportunity to frame Chu Xiuming for the two years' worth of missing army pay, knowing he had never complained and simply led his soldiers in farming. Their plan was to have Chu Xiuming recalled to the capital for punishment, making him vulnerable and paving the way for an assault on the imperial city.
Back at the camp, Leopard Head and the Vice General were pleased about Shen Jin's return, but the Vice General worried about the potential trouble she might cause. Chu Xiuming, observing their concern, suspected Shen Jin had somehow swayed their loyalty. He sought a private meeting with her, asking why she had come back. Defining herself as a "deserted woman" with nowhere else to go, Shen Jin countered by asking if he had feared or hoped for her return.
She declared her new role as Supervisor, asserting her authority to oversee the military camp and Chu Xiuming's mansion. When Chu Xiuming expressed concern that she was overstepping, Shen Jin claimed she was dedicated and loved to "meddle." To prove her point, she demanded tea, remarking on his earlier claim of having none and proudly presenting her own.
Chu Xiuming respectfully served her the tea, but when Shen Jin drank it, she scalded her tongue and accused him of doing it on purpose, which he denied, stating it was her own tea. Later, Shen Jin assembled the entire army, announcing a competition with Chu Xiuming to prove her capability to those who doubted a woman's leadership. Despite Chu Xiuming's concerns about unfairness, Shen Jin insisted on an equal contest.
The challenge involved both of them being bound with ropes and sinking to the bottom of a lake with a feather between their lips; the first to untie themselves and surface would win. Releasing the feather would signal surrender or distress. As they submerged, Shen Jin quickly untied herself with her hairpin. Chu Xiuming, however, remained still, even discarding his feather.
Realizing he was counting on her to save him, Shen Jin quickly untied his ropes and gave him oxygen with a kiss. Underwater, she asked why he was so certain she wouldn't leave him behind, and he confirmed his faith in her. When she asked why he wrote the divorce settlement, he evaded the question, suggesting it was an inappropriate setting for personal matters.
Accusing him of torturing them both by denying his feelings, Shen Jin declared that she wouldn't have returned if she could have gotten over him. In turn, Chu Xiuming said that if she wasn't leaving, then he would. Moments later, they were pulled from the water, their embrace visible to everyone. Afterward, Rou Rou found a troubled Shen Jin, who confided that Chu Xiuming seemed determined to divorce her.
Rou Rou informed her that Chu Xiuming had returned to his mansion. When Shen Jin lamented her situation, Rou Rou asked about the divorce settlement, and Shen Jin admitted she had torn it up. Rou Rou pointed out that without the physical document, there was no proof of the divorce.
When Shen Jin reasoned he could simply write another, Rou Rou suggested she could tear that one up too, encouraging her to "trick" Chu Xiuming into coming back and not give up on their relationship. Following Rou Rou's advice, Shen Jin returned to Chu Xiuming's mansion. She found him in his study and asserted that within the mansion, they were husband and wife, not Supervisor and General.
Revealing that she had destroyed the divorce settlement, she requested that he maintain their marital status until he could formally report the reasons for their divorce to the Emperor. Chu Xiuming agreed, but clarified that while they would appear as a couple to outsiders, she would remain his Supervisor within the military camp. Shen Jin then earnestly pleaded with him to return to the camp, emphasizing the importance of military affairs over their personal relationship.
Chu Xiuming agreed to go back immediately, but Shen Jin insisted they share a meal first. As they departed, Chu Xiuming gave Shen Jin a Token of Pardon, allowing her one exemption if she were to violate military regulations. That night, Xiao Su saw soldiers escorting several children and, believing the rumors about Chu Xiuming being a cruel "Demon General," suspected foul play. As he moved to intervene, Chu Xiuming appeared and questioned his suspicious actions.
Xiao Su feigned innocence, claiming he was on his way to a romantic rendezvous. Later, inside her tent, Shen Jin shared food and wine she had brought from the mansion with Xiao Su. Chu Xiuming, observing them laughing together, grew furious and ordered the Vice General to investigate Xiao Su. The next day, Chu Xiuming caught Xiao Su investigating a restricted area. Xiao Su hinted he was searching for evidence of Chu Xiuming's "horrible crimes," referencing court rumors.
Stating he didn't care to be understood, Chu Xiuming ordered Xiao Su to be bludgeoned to death for trespassing. Just as the execution was to begin, Shen Jin rushed in, declaring Xiao Su was "her person." To save him, she used the Token of Pardon. Angered that she used his gift for someone else, Chu Xiuming nevertheless kept his word, pardoned Xiao Su, and departed in silence.
Soon after, several children emerged and gathered around Leopard Head, who explained they were orphans of rebel forces whom the General had secretly adopted, revealing that Xiao Su had completely misunderstood. That evening, Shen Jin privately sought Xiao Su's advice on military affairs, admitting her desire to help Chu Xiuming. Though Xiao Su reiterated the rumors, Shen Jin dismissed them, certain she knew Chu Xiuming better and believing that helping him would ultimately benefit herself. Xiao Su agreed to assist her.
Episode 8 Recap
During a lively full moon banquet where soldiers feasted and drank, Shen Jin arrived with Xiao Su. Her presence with another man immediately soured Chu Xiuming’s demeanor. Shen Jin attempted to diffuse the tension by apologizing for using the Token of Pardon, explaining it was to save Xiao Su's life and that Chu Xiuming must have misunderstood him.
Xiao Su also offered his thanks, but Chu Xiuming was dismissive, telling him to direct his gratitude to Shen Jin, as she was the reason he was still alive. Observing Shen Jin and Xiao Su’s familiar and playful banter as they toasted the soldiers, Chu Xiuming’s anger visibly escalated. He abruptly smashed his wine bowl, declaring an immediate ban on all drinking in the military camp and threatening military law for any defiance.
He then sternly decreed that from that moment on, Shen Jin was to be addressed solely as the Supervisor, not "Her Ladyship," a command Shen Jin herself echoed to the troops. The next morning, Chu Xiuming woke with a headache and a hazy memory of his harsh words, realizing he had deeply hurt Shen Jin. After failing to find her, he sought out Xiao Su, who scolded him for his cold-heartedness.
Xiao Su emphasized Shen Jin's selfless devotion, revealing that she had been studying military affairs solely to assist Chu Xiuming and had eyes only for him. Desperate, Chu Xiuming went to the lakeside and called out for Shen Jin, explaining his reason for the divorce letter. He confessed that as a general constantly facing death, he feared he couldn't offer her a lifelong commitment and wrote the letter to prevent her future heartbreak.
He admitted that since her arrival, she had become his distraction and his weakness, especially her close relationship with Xiao Su. He confessed that for the first time, he felt fear, and the thought of losing her was the most unbearable prospect of all. He then pleaded with her to stay and be his lady. Shen Jin emerged from her hiding place, and Chu Xiuming embraced her tightly.
She clarified her relationship with Xiao Su, explaining that they and Meaty were childhood friends. Shen Jin had taken Meaty into her home, while Xiao Su had to continue wandering alone, making him forever grateful to her. She also revealed that Xiao Su and Meaty had long harbored feelings for each other, but her presence had inadvertently kept them apart. Realizing his misconception, Chu Xiuming apologized to Xiao Su.
In turn, Xiao Su acknowledged that the General was not the ruthless man of rumor and revealed his true purpose: he was investigating court officials who were slandering Chu Xiuming to the Emperor. He warned that spies were planted in the camp and that the frontier had received no army provisions for two years, despite the Emperor allocating them annually. They agreed to quietly root out the spies.
To protect them, Chu Xiuming sent Shen Jin and Meaty to a nearby bazaar with Leopard Head, acknowledging that while the women were their soft spots, they were also their armor. That night, Xiao Su successfully apprehended the last remaining spy. Before departing for the capital to report his findings, he entrusted Meaty’s care to Chu Xiuming.
Meanwhile, at the bazaar, Shen Jin bought a jade amulet for Chu Xiuming, noting its cool exterior and transparent interior symbolized his own cold-on-the-outside, passionate-on-the-inside nature. Meaty chose a belt hook for Xiao Su, later explaining it was a reminder for him to remain faithful. Xiao Su's departure left Meaty heartbroken and inconsolable, but they shared a tender farewell, with him promising to return as soon as possible.
Following Xiao Su’s departure, Shen Jin proposed that she and Chu Xiuming keep their distance to avoid upsetting the grieving Meaty. Chu Xiuming disagreed, suggesting she could visit his tent discreetly instead. One day, Shen Jin arrived late, explaining she had a stiff neck. Despite his initial annoyance, Chu Xiuming skillfully adjusted her neck, instantly relieving the pain. Just then, Meaty appeared and asked if they were on a date.
Shen Jin quickly denied it and, to placate Meaty, promised to maintain a three-step distance from Chu Xiuming at all times. Thereafter, Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming had to be extremely careful, showing affection only in secret, like passing food when Meaty wasn't looking or standing far apart during training. One day, while they were enjoying a quiet moment by the lake, Meaty suddenly appeared to do laundry.
Panicking at the thought of Meaty seeing them together, Shen Jin reflexively kicked Chu Xiuming into the water, then quickly made an excuse about impending rain to whisk Meaty away from the scene.
Episode 9 Recap
Xiao Su reported to the Emperor, confirming that General Chu Xiuming was loyal to the nation and had no intention of rebelling. He suggested that the rumors were likely the work of a schemer within the court. The Emperor ordered a secret investigation and instructed Xiao Su to return to Chu Xiuming's side to protect him.
Since Xiao Su's identity had been exposed during his mission, the Emperor agreed to help him assume a new, covert identity by faking his death. Later, Chu Xiuming received a message from Xiao Su, confirming the success of their plan. He confronted a captured spy, but the man committed suicide by poison before revealing his mastermind. Meanwhile, the imperial court received news that the Eagle tribe, a long-standing enemy at the border, was seeking peace.
The Emperor was overjoyed, but a censor voiced suspicion, pointing out the odd timing. Count Yongning had fought the Eagles for years without progress, yet they surrendered just days after Chu Xiuming's arrival as the new supervisor. The Emperor, weary of the argument, permitted an investigation. At Count Yongning’s Mansion, the Vice General arrived with an urgent report for Chu Xiuming.
Shen Jin politely excused herself but paused outside the door, where she overheard them discussing an order from the Emperor for Xiao Su’s execution and the need to handle "that corpse." She then heard Chu Xiuming say he would go to collect Xiao Su himself that night. Misunderstanding the conversation, Shen Jin was heartbroken, believing Xiao Su was dead.
She assumed Chu Xiuming was hiding the truth to spare her feelings and resolved to conceal her own grief to avoid worrying him. Deeply troubled, Shen Jin encountered a cheerful Meaty reminiscing about Xiao Su with Mammy Qingqiu. Meaty fondly recalled Xiao Su's shyness and good physique, leaving Shen Jin to wrestle with whether to tell her friend the terrible news. Elsewhere, Xiao Cong, who admired the Vice General, presented him with a warm garment she had painstakingly made.
The Vice General misunderstood her intentions, and after trying it on and finding it too large, he gave it to Leopard Head. Believing the garment was a personal gift from Xiao Cong, Leopard Head was ecstatic and vowed to wear it always. That evening, Shen Jin had no appetite.
Meaty joined her and recounted their childhood, explaining how she used to eat Shen Jin's leftovers to spare her from hardship, often getting punished for it, and then secretly giving the rest to Xiao Su on the streets. She proudly credited herself for Xiao Su’s strong build and confessed her lifelong dream of marrying him. Hearing this, Shen Jin could no longer hold back her sorrow and tearfully told Meaty that she might not be able to marry Xiao Su.
Devastated, Meaty began to frantically stuff her face with food, trying to fill the void of her grief. Believing Xiao Su was dead, the two grief-stricken women got drunk on the mansion rooftop to mourn. As they teetered on the edge, about to fall, Chu Xiuming and Xiao Su arrived below. As it turned out, Xiao Su's "death" was a ruse, part of a counter-espionage plan to give him a new identity.
Having just returned from their mission, the two men used their agility to catch their respective women in their arms. With the misunderstanding cleared, Chu Xiuming told Shen Jin he would never leave her side, while Xiao Su assured Meaty he would live a good life. Later, Chu Xiuming jokingly offered to write a pledge to never behave as he did in the past, a playful nod to the time he had given Shen Jin a letter of divorce.
The next morning, Shen Jin giggled foolishly while Meaty apologized for their drunken behavior. Relieved, Shen Jin expressed her happiness that Meaty and Xiao Su's relationship had grown stronger. Meaty playfully teased Shen Jin about her own marital status, reminding her that she had "divorced" the General. Shen Jin clarified that she had only scribbled the word "divorce" on a piece of paper in anger, so it was not a valid letter of divorce.
Later, the Eagle tribe’s general arrived at the military camp to formalize peace. During a display of martial arts, a warrior attacked Chu Xiuming with a curved sword. The "Demon General" swiftly disarmed and wounded the attacker, who was revealed to be Princess Maya, the Eagle leader’s daughter, who claimed she was only testing his skills. Since he had injured her, Chu Xiuming arranged for her to recover at his mansion.
When Shen Jin returned home, she found Maya wearing her clothes and calling her "sister." Shen Jin furiously rejected the title. When Maya tried to take the blame for the situation, it only angered Shen Jin further. Seeing the tension, Chu Xiuming swept Shen Jin into his arms and carried her outside, finding her jealousy endearing. That evening, Maya challenged Chu Xiuming to a sparring session that appeared intimate, prompting Shen Jin to intervene.
She then insisted Chu Xiuming return to the military camp, arguing that a general should not be distracted by romantic entanglements. The next day, Shen Jin accompanied Maya shopping instead of letting Chu Xiuming go. At the market, Maya bought several items, including a hairpin she claimed was a perfect match for Shen Jin's attire. Seeing through Maya’s attempts to win her over, Shen Jin suggested they go for a drink, planning to get the princess drunk and extract information.
Though Maya initially claimed she wasn't allowed to drink, she quickly became intoxicated and loudly declared that she would happily become a concubine for any man she liked, regardless of his status. The next morning, Shen Jin awoke with a severe hangover, only to find that Maya was perfectly fine and had already gone to the morning market.
Episode 10 Recap
Following her drunken night with Princess Maya, Shen Jin awoke determined to remove her rival. She had her servants pack Princess Maya's bags and waited at the entrance to dismiss her. To Shen Jin's surprise, Maya readily agreed to move out, stating she would relocate to a market inn for convenience. However, Mammy Qingqiu and Meaty both suspected a trap in this easy victory.
Meaty was especially worried, fearing that an unhappy Shen Jin would act on her threat to have Meaty's love interest permanently confined to the military camp. That evening, Chu Xiuming returned and embraced Shen Jin, assuring her that his heart had room only for her. He then gently chided her for rudely expelling Maya. Feeling aggrieved that he seemed to pity Maya, Shen Jin fell silent.
To lift her spirits, Chu Xiuming took her for a night stroll through a lively lantern market. When Shen Jin couldn't see a street performer through the crowd, Chu Xiuming playfully blocked her view before effortlessly lifting her into his arms for a perfect vantage point. The next day, Chu Xiuming informed Shen Jin that the Eagle chieftain was visiting and asked her to arrange a banquet.
Shen Jin joyfully assumed he was coming to take Maya home, but her happiness was short-lived when she learned Maya would be returning to the mansion. Upon arrival, Maya distributed gifts to all the servants except Shen Jin in a clear attempt to win their favor.
Shen Jin sent Meaty to eavesdrop and learned the truth: Maya's father had encouraged her to choose any hero from the Chu army to be her "Golden-Knife Consort," promising to secure an imperial marriage decree, and Maya had her sights set on Chu Xiuming. At the banquet, Maya performed a captivating dance. Shen Jin, watching from behind a curtain, grew concerned as she saw Chu Xiuming’s appreciative smile.
Meanwhile, the maid Xiao Cong's attempts to flirt with Vice General Chu Xiuyuan were met with complete obliviousness, as the stoic military man professed to have no particular preferences. Witnessing this, Shen Jin wished her own husband were as unperceptive. After the banquet, Shen Jin proposed to Chu Xiuming that they arrange a match between Chu Xiuyuan and Princess Maya, framing it as a noble act for border stability.
Chu Xiuming firmly rejected the idea, stating that Chu Xiuyuan could not leave the country and reiterating his devotion to her alone. Shen Jin misinterpreted his refusal as a secret desire to become the Golden-Knife Consort himself and, frustrated by his lack of support, resolved to act on her own. Later, Chu Xiuming confided in his brother, Chu Xiuyuan, that Shen Jin couldn't possibly understand the complexities of their situation, hinting at a secret identity that prevented such a match.
Shen Jin devised a plan to lock Maya and Chu Xiuyuan together in the city gate tower overnight, hoping proximity would foster affection. Meaty reluctantly carried out the order, but Shen Jin was quickly struck by guilt, worried about the consequences and deepening Chu Xiuming's misunderstanding. She rushed back to release them, only to find the tower empty. Nearby, she discovered Chu Xiuyuan and Maya engaged in a friendly duel.
Chu Xiuming soon arrived and intervened, demonstrating the principle that "speed is key," which impressed them both. Seeing Chu Xiuming's close interaction with Maya, Shen Jin became deeply upset and retreated to her room. Refusing to eat or see anyone, Shen Jin locked herself away. Meaty encouraged her to maintain a hunger strike to elicit Chu Xiuming's sympathy, but both were soon overcome by genuine hunger.
That night, they crept into the kitchen seeking leftovers but instead found a feast of Shen Jin’s favorite dishes, still hot. They learned that Chu Xiuming had secretly arranged for these meals every night. They also discovered he had returned to the military camp because Shen Jin refused to see him, feeling the mansion was empty without her.
At the camp, Chu Xiuyuan admonished his brother for being oblivious to Shen Jin's true needs, suggesting she wanted to share his burdens, not just be protected from them. Overcome with love and regret, Shen Jin went to the military camp. With tears in her eyes, she apologized to Chu Xiuming, confessing that her anger and jealousy stemmed from her deep love and fear of losing him.
She acknowledged he was hiding things from her but promised to wait patiently until he was ready to share his burdens. Finally, the day came for Princess Maya to return to her tribe. As Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming bid her farewell, they were astonished to see Yuan'er, a household servant, preparing to leave with her. It was then revealed through a flashback that Maya and Yuan'er were in love.
Mortified that her schemes and anxieties had been for nothing, Shen Jin vented her frustration that everyone else seemed to know but kept her in the dark. Chu Xiuming embraced her, reassuring her that he belonged only to her and that no other woman could compare. At peace, Shen Jin playfully asked him to "sign and press his seal" on his promise, and they sealed it with a tender kiss.
Episode 11 Recap
Vice General received homemade osmanthus cakes from Miss Scallion, who expressed her deep admiration for his sword craft, recalling how impressed she was when she first saw him sparring with the General. Leopard Head, however, rudely interrupted their conversation, causing frustration for Miss Scallion, who swore to confront him later. Meanwhile, at the imperial court, ministers reported to the Emperor on two pressing matters. One report highlighted the severe marital discord between Count Yongning, Chu Xiuming, and his wife.
More gravely, another revealed that the border troops under his command had not received their army pay for two years, despite the imperial court issuing it annually, raising strong suspicions of corruption. The Emperor, incensed by the potential embezzlement, was further distressed when his Ninth Princess fainted once again. He immediately rushed to her side, where he learned she was suffering from lovesickness. The Ninth Princess confessed her unwavering devotion to Su Chen, a palace guard she secretly loved.
Her father struggled to understand her choice, highlighting her royal status against the guard's humble background. He reminded her of her deceased mother, his most beloved concubine, and expressed his heartbreak over her condition. The Ninth Princess, however, remained resolute, threatening to take her own life if her wish to be with Su Chen was not granted.
After she knelt outside the palace for three days and nights, the Emperor relented, sparing Su Chen's life and exiling him from the palace instead of executing him. Concerned for his daughter's well-being, the Emperor decided to send her to Count Yongning's mansion at the border.
This journey served a dual purpose: it would allow her a change of scenery to recuperate, and she could also discreetly observe the rumored discord between General Chu Xiuming and his wife, Shen Jin, and report back. Back at the General's Mansion, both Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin separately contemplated their relationship. Chu Xiuming confided in Xiao Su that he felt he had not adequately protected Shen Jin and owed her a proper wedding to solidify his lifelong commitment.
In another room, Shen Jin expressed to Meaty her exhaustion from constantly guarding against perceived rivals, realizing she had unfairly suspected Princess Maya and wronged Chu Xiuming. She felt that a grand wedding would be the perfect way to mend things. Despite their different starting points, both realized they desired to formalize their union. Shen Jin initially envisioned a lavish, public ceremony, wanting to celebrate their marriage with grand fanfare.
However, Chu Xiuming was acutely aware of the imperial court's spies and the dangers posed by his enemies. He expressed his reluctance to make their wedding a public affair, fearing it would draw unwanted attention and compromise her safety, especially given her official position as the court-appointed supervisor. Although disappointed, Shen Jin ultimately conceded to a private ceremony for their safety and for the well-being of their trusted companions, particularly Xiao Su, whose own situation was precarious.
She agreed to a discreet wedding within the mansion, on the condition that it would still be filled with all the traditional joyous decorations. The General's Mansion was then transformed, draped in vibrant red fabrics and lit by red candles and lanterns. The main hall displayed offerings symbolizing prosperity, surrounded by lush flowers. Shen Jin, adorned in a radiant red gown and veil, was led by Chu Xiuming through the celebration.
He guided her to a bridge in the courtyard, where he spoke beautiful vows, promising to be by her side through every season, protecting and cherishing her from spring's blossoming to winter's chill, for every year, season, and moment of their lives. After their heartfelt exchange, they sealed their commitment by signing and marking a document with their fingerprints, followed by a tender kiss.
The following morning, Shen Jin bid Chu Xiuming a reluctant farewell as he departed for the military camp. There, Chu Xiuming was informed by Xiao Su of the Emperor's unexpected decision to send the Ninth Princess to reside at the General's Mansion. Both men were perplexed by the Emperor's motives. Xiao Su worried that Shen Jin's fiery temper would lead to jealousy, a concern Chu Xiuming shared, and he resolved to keep the news from her for the time being.
However, later that evening, Xiao Su disclosed the information to Meaty, who promptly relayed it to Shen Jin. The two women speculated that the Emperor might be trying to foster a relationship between the General and the Ninth Princess, leaving Shen Jin deeply troubled by the potential threat to her new marriage. With the General preoccupied and the Ninth Princess's arrival imminent, Shen Jin decided she could not afford to be passive.
Recalling her past experience with Princess Maya, she resolved to take proactive measures to safeguard her marriage. She and Meaty journeyed outside the city to intercept the Ninth Princess's carriage. Shen Jin introduced herself as Chu Xiuming's wife and bravely shared the story of their arduous journey to be together, humbly asking the Princess to respect their love. Moved by Shen Jin's sincerity, the Ninth Princess reciprocated by revealing her own poignant love story with the palace guard, Su Chen.
She recounted how their love transcended social status, leading to her unbearable suffering after Su Chen was banished, and confessed that she only continued to live with the hope of one day reuniting with him. The Ninth Princess initially considered returning to the capital, believing her presence might cause more pain by witnessing Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming's happiness. However, Shen Jin passionately encouraged her to stay, urging her to find solace and healing at the General's Mansion. She offered her full support and protection, assuring the Ninth Princess that with such profound love, a reunion with Su Chen was inevitable.
Episode 12 Recap
Following the Emperor's decree, Chu Xiuming resolves to reject the Ninth Princess's stay at the General's Mansion, determined to protect Shen Jin from any potential misunderstanding or heartache. He confides in Xiao Su that his unwavering commitment is to Shen Jin alone, whom he considers more precious than any princess or even a fairy. He acknowledges that keeping their reconciliation private has already been unfair to her and is adamant about preventing further distress.
Concerned about spies in the princess's entourage, Chu Xiuming instructs Xiao Su to return to the capital after the matter is settled. This will protect Xiao Su, who is officially considered dead, and allow him to investigate the true reasons behind the princess's visit. The next day, the Ninth Princess arrives at a conspicuously unwelcoming mansion. Chu Xiuming greets her but bluntly states his intention not to host her, explaining that his love for Shen Jin is profound and unshakeable.
He fears the princess's presence would inevitably cause jealousy and asks her to find alternative accommodation. As the understanding princess prepares to leave, Shen Jin appears and, to Chu Xiuming's shock, publicly refutes his claims of love. She asserts they are not mutually enamored and that he has even written her a letter of divorce, before warmly inviting the princess to stay.
Chu Xiuming is left utterly baffled by Shen Jin's behavior, wondering if his initial rejection was not firm enough, causing her to react in anger. Unbeknownst to him, Shen Jin has a secret plan. She reveals to her maid, Scallion, that after a previous misjudgment, she aims to restore her dignity while also helping the princess find her true love—a way to "kill two birds with one stone."
She insists on keeping Chu Xiuming in the dark, fearing he would interfere. Meanwhile, Xiao Su misinterprets the situation, telling Chu Xiuming that Shen Jin is merely testing his loyalty by playing hard to get. That night, Shen Jin announces she will move in with the princess, using the pretext that Chu Xiuming needs his rest. She evades his questions, promising to explain once her plan is complete.
At subsequent meals, she seats the princess in her own place across from Chu Xiuming and offers her the finest food, including a precious bird's nest he had procured specially for Shen Jin. Frustrated by what he perceives as a deliberate slight, Chu Xiuming storms away from the table. His frustration peaks during a Cuju game hosted by the princess, with a beautiful hairpin as the prize for the winner to give to their beloved.
After winning, Chu Xiuming offers the hairpin to Shen Jin, but she refuses it and insists he give it to the princess. With a challenging glance at Shen Jin, he reluctantly places the hairpin on the princess, causing Shen Jin a pang of discomfort. Shen Jin then orchestrates the next phase of her plan: raising money for the princess's elopement. She has the princess write to the Emperor, requesting funds to renovate the "outdated" General's Mansion.
To create the illusion of disrepair, Shen Jin begins dismantling parts of the mansion, such as a pavilion, and haggling with craftsmen over the price of the materials. Deeply perplexed by Shen Jin's sudden obsession with money, Chu Xiuming discusses his confusion with his Vice General. He dismisses the idea that Shen Jin married him for wealth, affirming his devotion to her regardless of her motives, admitting he is "obsessed" with her.
He instructs Xiao Su to continue investigating the princess and to covertly look into the craftsmen Shen Jin is dealing with. When Chu Xiuming sustains an injury while acquiring a rare Ganoderma mushroom for Shen Jin, she gives the precious item to the princess without seeming to notice his wound. His brother, Chu Xiuyuan, takes him to Doctor Li. There, the doctor reveals that Shen Jin recently requested numerous remedies for "incurable diseases" and borrowed several medical books.
Chu Xiuming tragically misinterprets this, concluding that Shen Jin is dying. He believes she is pushing him towards the princess to ensure he is cared for after she is gone and raising money for his future. Meanwhile, Shen Jin delivers the Ganoderma to the princess and finds her with a man, Su Chen, her long-lost lover. Understanding immediately, Shen Jin discreetly offers to stand guard outside, allowing the couple a tearful, heartfelt reunion.
Later, Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming find each other in the courtyard. She immediately notices his injury with concern, but he downplays it, thinking it pales in comparison to her "illness." He embraces her, promising that no matter how much time they have left, his heart is hers alone. After his wound is bandaged, a distraught Chu Xiuming becomes unusually clingy, asking Shen Jin to feed him his medicine.
Complaining of the bitterness, he kisses her, playfully claiming another kiss is needed to make the medicine sweet. He privately resolves to cherish every moment he believes they have left together. Shen Jin later explains to the princess that her strange behavior towards Chu Xiuming is part of the plan. She assures her that he is not a petty man and is used to her antics, promising to clarify everything to him when the time is right.
Episode 13 Recap
Early one morning, Shen Jin was already at her vanity when Chu Xiuming awoke. She explained she was applying makeup to avoid looking haggard, but Chu Xiuming, still believing she was terminally ill, misunderstood her words as a sign of her worsening condition. Worried, he questioned her, but Shen Jin playfully deflected, urging him to have breakfast. Later that evening, Chu Xiuming returned to find Shen Jin tasting various bitter medicinal herbs, retching from their taste.
His concern deepened, but Shen Jin insisted she was fine and that he was overthinking. Unconvinced and heartbroken by her supposed suffering, Chu Xiuming pulled her into a tight embrace, promising that he would always protect her, recognize her anywhere, and love her unconditionally, whether she was young or old. Touched, Shen Jin asked if he would always speak such sweet words to her, and he readily agreed.
Xiao Su later reported to Chu Xiuming that the ninth princess had a lover, a palace guard recently banished by the Emperor. Xiao Su noted the Emperor’s unusual leniency, which allowed the guard to live and the princess to leave the palace.
Connecting this information with Shen Jin's recent strange behavior, Chu Xiuming deduced her grand plan: she had been feigning illness not to test him, but as a cover to help the ninth princess elope, even risking her own life in the process. Realizing he had been played, Chu Xiuming decided to counter her scheme with a "ruse within a ruse."
Soon after, a distressed ninth princess rushed to Shen Jin, revealing that Chu Xiuming had arrested her lover, Su Chen, as an assassin. Believing all was lost, she despaired. Shen Jin immediately sought out Chu Xiuming, attempting to soften him with a playful offering of wine. Seeing through the act, Chu Xiuming demanded her true intentions. Shen Jin dropped the pretense and begged him to release Su Chen.
Chu Xiuming feigned ignorance, then slyly suggested Su Chen must be Shen Jin’s lover. When Shen Jin’s panicked reaction seemed to confirm it, he finally revealed he knew the truth all along: her plan was to help the ninth princess and Su Chen elope. Meanwhile, the Vice General, Chu Xiuyuan, still worried about rumors of Shen Jin's "incurable illness," questioned Meaty, who vehemently denied it.
Unconvinced, he took her to Doctor Li, who clarified that Shen Jin was not terminally ill but did suffer from irregular menstruation. Taking this to heart, Chu Xiuyuan confronted Chu Xiuming, earnestly advising him to cherish Shen Jin and care for her properly, calling her recovery a blessing. He sternly warned Chu Xiuming that if he drove Shen Jin away with his behavior, he would end up utterly alone.
Chu Xiuming acknowledged his words, promising to fulfill his duties after he finished surveying some terrain. Shen Jin then detailed her escape plan to Chu Xiuming: the princess would fake her death and be buried, after which Shen Jin would have her secretly exhumed. Chu Xiuming pointed out a major flaw, asking what she would do if the Emperor ordered the body moved to the imperial mausoleum.
As Shen Jin faltered, Chu Xiuming reassured her he had a solution, stating the plan would have to wait until the Double Ninth Festival. When she worried about the long wait, he hinted that managing such delays was her specialty. As preparations began, Meaty became utterly bewildered after delivering items, witnessing what appeared to be "two Generals" and "two Madams" in different places. She worried she was hallucinating from overeating or that her masters had "become spirits."
Xiao Su simply dismissed her confusion as a product of her imagination. The plan, a classic "golden cicada shedding its shell" ruse, was set. The ninth princess, dressed as Shen Jin, and Su Chen, dressed as Chu Xiuming, sat with the real couple. The princess expressed her profound gratitude for their help. As a parting gift, she gave Shen Jin a rouge box, explaining it was from a very close relative and that they may never meet again.
On the Double Ninth Festival, Chu Xiuming cleverly dismissed the ninth princess’s maid, claiming the mountain path was too rugged for her. He then had Su Chen, disguised as an attendant, escort the princess up the mountain, where they made their escape. The news sent to the Emperor was that the princess had tragically fallen from a cliff and died.
Overcome with grief, the Emperor ordered the matter handled quietly, secretly content that his daughter could now live the free life she desired. The dismissed maid, uncertain of the princess's fate, reported to a court official. Noting the Emperor’s lack of inquiry, the official had the maid silently disposed of to avoid complications. With the princess safely away, Shen Jin expressed her relief and gratitude for Chu Xiuming's trust.
Overhearing her, he playfully appeared and promised to support her in all things, urging her to confide in him. He then offered to do her makeup, vowing to do so for the rest of her life. Shen Jin handed him the rouge box from the princess. As he opened it, he noticed two faint lines of script: "Withered eyes gaze at mountains and water; the hollow space has known many a heart."
The word "hollow" reminded him of the jade seal in his study. Recalling the princess's words that the box was from a "very close relative," he fetched the seal and confirmed it was hollow. He had Xiao Su examine it, who identified the scent of a medicinal herb unique to the Eagle Clan. Realizing the profound connection, Chu Xiuming declared he would investigate personally.
He informed Shen Jin he would be leaving for the Eagle Clan's territory for a few days. Feigning sadness, Shen Jin playfully insisted on accompanying him to avoid the "three autumns of longing" from a single day's separation. Though concerned for her safety, Chu Xiuming eventually relented, arranging for Chu Xiuyuan to protect her and Meaty. He promised to meet them at the Pear Blossom Bistro once his business was done.
Upon arriving, Shen Jin and Meaty, protected by Chu Xiuyuan, excitedly explored the local market. Shen Jin bought snacks and trinkets, including a floral paper accessory she playfully compared on herself and Meaty. She also bought a pair of shoes for Chu Xiuming, and another for a protesting Chu Xiuyuan. Meanwhile, Chu Xiuming went to an apothecary and presented the medicinal powder from the seal, but the pharmacist did not recognize it.
Episode 14 Recap
Chu Xiuming recalled his childhood, when his aunt, whom he affectionately called "Ming'er," taught him that a true man should possess a benevolent heart for the world. She urged him to grow into a capable and powerful individual, not only to protect his family, including her and her unborn child, but also to use his strength to defend the vulnerable.
On that day, his aunt also gave him a jade pendant, passed down from her own mother, wishing him peace and joy. She hoped that one day, he would pass it on to his beloved, for her to keep close as a protective amulet. Years later, with his aunt no longer alive, Chu Xiuming clutched a bottle of medicinal powder, vowing to fulfill his promise: he would protect those he cherished and uncover the truth behind his aunt's fate.
The Eagle tribe's streets bustled with life, rivaling the General's Mansion in their vibrancy. Shen Jin was delighted by the exotic sights and smells. She watched bare-chested wrestlers and was drawn to the aroma of meat skewers roasted directly on charcoal.
Despite Chu Xiuyuan's cautious warnings about the Eagles' different eating habits and potential discomfort from the unfamiliar food and cooking methods, Shen Jin enthusiastically sampled the delicious skewers, even suggesting they buy some of the unique spices to take home. She dismissed Chu Xiuyuan's concerns as a "jinx" and playfully ate more. The trio eventually found a table at a pre-arranged tavern where they were to meet Chu Xiuming.
Chu Xiuyuan suggested finding a quieter place, but Shen Jin insisted on staying, explaining that Chu Xiuming would come looking for them there, and promised to keep a low profile. As they settled in, a group of drunk men at a nearby table began harassing some women. Unable to tolerate the behavior, Shen Jin boldly splashed water on them, provoking a fight. Chu Xiuyuan quickly intervened.
Just then, a young woman named Tarou burst in, kicking one of the men down. When another assailant lunged with a stool, Chu Xiuyuan swiftly pulled Tarou into his arms, shielding her. Her brother, Hute, then arrived and helped scare off the remaining troublemakers. It was at this moment that Chu Xiuming also arrived. Shen Jin, still ruffled, told him she had been bullied. Chu Xiuming thanked Tarou and Hute for their timely assistance.
Noting they weren't locals, he invited them to join them for dinner as a token of gratitude, an offer which Tarou and Hute eagerly accepted. The two groups then moved to another establishment for their meal. Shen Jin, introducing herself as "Jin," reminisced about her past as a "queen of the street," noting how much life had changed since she married. Chu Xiuyuan gently reminded her to "watch what you say."
Shen Jin addressed Chu Xiuming simply as "Chu" and mentioned he was in town for business, prompting Hute to offer his assistance, revealing himself to be a "local officer." Tarou, meanwhile, was openly captivated by Chu Xiuyuan. She directly asked him to drink with her, and when he demurred, she boldly declared, "Marry me, and I'll drink wine with you every day." Meaty corrected her, saying Chu Xiuyuan should be the one proposing, but Shen Jin quickly silenced her.
Tarou continued to pursue Chu Xiuyuan, even quoting a poem about a stunning beauty from the north and playfully teasing him for his aloofness. She then stated directly that he was her crush and asked if he would spend the rest of his life with her. Chu Xiuyuan, a man of simple manners, humbly replied that he was "a coarse man" and did not deserve her.
Tarou observed the calluses on his hands, which reminded her of her own father, who had died when she was young, followed by her mother who succumbed to grief. She shared that she and Hute were now alone and that her brother was very strict. She then asked Chu Xiuyuan to take another walk with her the following day, to which he agreed.
During their revelry, a tipsy Meaty inadvertently revealed Chu Xiuming's true identity, proclaiming him "Count Yongning, Chu Xiuming." Shen Jin immediately tried to dismiss it as drunken nonsense, but Hute, with a subtle shift in his eyes, had clearly taken note. Later that night, Meaty was heavily intoxicated and restless in bed. Shen Jin, though dizzy from the wine, was still lucid.
She sweetly told Chu Xiuming how happy she was and how much she owed him for the joyful day. Their tender moment was briefly interrupted by Meaty's ramblings, but Chu Xiuming soon decided to get some sobering soup for them both to ease their discomfort. As he left the room, he was ambushed by several skilled assassins. Simultaneously, Chu Xiuyuan was walking Tarou home from their late-night stroll when they heard the sounds of combat.
Investigating, Chu Xiuyuan found Chu Xiuming engaged in a fierce battle. Tarou also rushed to the scene. Upon seeing her, the assassins quickly fled. Chu Xiuyuan warned Chu Xiuming that these attackers were far more skilled than the thugs from the tavern. Recognizing the immediate danger, Chu Xiuming ordered Chu Xiuyuan to pack their belongings so they could depart at dawn and told Tarou to gather more men.
Tarou, confused, immediately confronted her brother Hute, demanding to know why he had attacked their friends. Hute angrily told her to stay out of the matter, accusing Chu Xiuming and his party of hiding their true identities and never truly considering them friends. At dawn, as they prepared to leave, the assassins struck again. Chu Xiuming, facing a large group, ordered Chu Xiuyuan to take Shen Jin and Meaty and flee while he engaged the attackers alone.
He assured Shen Jin he would be fine and urged them to hurry. The situation quickly became desperate as some assassins targeted Chu Xiuming, while others pursued Shen Jin, Chu Xiuyuan, and Meaty. Chu Xiuming, a formidable fighter, skillfully fended off his attackers. In the chaos, he managed to unmask the leader, revealing him to be Hute. Without time to press the matter further, Chu Xiuming quickly disengaged and sped off to rescue Shen Jin.
Shen Jin, Chu Xiuyuan, and Meaty fled into a bamboo forest. The assassins, armed with curved swords, quickly overwhelmed the unarmed Chu Xiuyuan, who sustained injuries while protecting the women. Seeing his perilous situation, Shen Jin instructed Meaty to stay hidden and wait for the General. To save Chu Xiuyuan, she then stepped forward, revealing her identity as Chu Xiuming's wife and surrendering. Both she and the injured Chu Xiuyuan were captured.
Meaty later found Chu Xiuming and reported what had happened. Unable to act openly in the Eagles' territory, Chu Xiuming sent Meaty to seek help from Princess Maya. At the princess's mansion, Meaty was told that Maya was not home and was only permitted to leave a letter. Meanwhile, Chu Xiuming tried to gather information about Hute, but locals, clearly intimidated by Hute's influence, refused to speak. Hute had confined Shen Jin and Chu Xiuyuan together.
Tarou, confronting her brother, learned the shocking truth: Chu Xiuming was the man who had killed their father on the battlefield. Hute declared this their only chance to avenge their parents. Tarou, though devastated, argued that on the battlefield, life and death were unpredictable, and that Chu Xiuyuan, as an innocent party, should be released.
Hute, however, remained resolute, accusing Tarou of being a "betrayer" for advocating for their enemies, especially after their family had suffered so much following their father's demise. Tarou countered, accusing Hute of not being brave enough to succeed their father as chieftain. In their cell, Shen Jin discovered the lock had two mechanisms. Her own hairpin was too thick for the second lock, but she noticed Tarou's finer hairpin might do the trick. Later, Tarou brought food to the captives.
Shen Jin subtly suggested to Chu Xiuyuan that Tarou's hairpin could be the key to their escape. As Tarou placed the food down, Chu Xiuyuan used a piece of straw to deftly snatch the hairpin from Tarou's hair. The thin hairpin proved effective, allowing them to unlock the door. Just as they were escaping, Tarou encountered them. Realizing Chu Xiuyuan had used her feelings, she was deeply hurt. "
I like you so much, yet you used me," she tearfully exclaimed, asking if he had any feelings for her at all. When Chu Xiuyuan remained silent, she angrily ordered the guards to lock them back up. However, Hute intervened. He had been informed that Chu Xiuming was still at the inn, actively inquiring about his whereabouts. Seeing an opportunity, Hute decided against re-imprisoning them and instead ordered a letter to be sent directly to Chu Xiuming.
Episode 15 Recap
Following Chu Xiuyuan and Shen Jin's capture, Chu Xiuming left his loyal maid, Meaty, with a crucial instruction: if he did not return by nightfall, she was to immediately go back to the mansion and inform Leopard Head. He then proceeded alone to a secluded bamboo grove, prepared for the gravest outcome. Deep within the grove, Hute, accompanied by his warriors, held Shen Jin and Chu Xiuyuan captive.
Hute’s fury was palpable as he confronted Chu Xiuming, demanding retribution for his father, Bartel, who was slain by Chu Xiuming on the battlefield. Chu Xiuming calmly acknowledged he had killed Bartel, but explained it was an act of self-preservation during war. He recounted that six months prior, while patrolling the border with only twenty soldiers, Bartel had ambushed him with fifty elite warriors, killing over a dozen of his men.
Chu Xiuming and his remaining seven soldiers had to fight their way out, and with Bartel in relentless pursuit, killing him was the only way to save his own comrades. Hute, however, refused to listen, blinded by vengeance and insisting on "a life for a life." Chu Xiuming then posed a poignant question: his own mother was killed by the Eagle tribe, and his father died protecting him from them. Should he, too, seek revenge by slaughtering all Eagles?
He argued that the hard-won peace, bought with the blood of countless soldiers from both sides, was not meant to perpetuate hatred but to allow for a better, more peaceful life. If his death could bring lasting peace and allow Hute to relinquish his hatred, Chu Xiuming offered his life without hesitation. As Hute raised his blade, Princess Maya, an old acquaintance of Chu Xiuming, intervened.
She admonished Hute, stating that his actions were improper now that the war had ceased and warned that she would report him to her father, the king, causing Hute to back down. Chu Xiuming then gently approached Hute, explaining that war had claimed loved ones from both sides, but harboring hatred would only spread further suffering. Moved by his words, Hute released Shen Jin and Chu Xiuyuan.
Later, in a joyous gathering, Princess Maya and her husband, Yuan'er, shared that she was pregnant. As everyone celebrated, Chu Xiuming recalled his investigation and asked Princess Maya to recommend an experienced Eagle pharmacist. The next day, a pharmacist identified the substance he had found as "Sky Lantern Flower," a plant used for detoxification and promoting healing.
Realizing this plant had no connection to the Eighth Prince's death and that no further clues would be found at the border, Chu Xiuming decided he must find a way to return to the imperial court. Meanwhile, Tarou approached Chu Xiuyuan, but he gently rejected her, admitting he did not reciprocate her feelings.
He explained that he had witnessed the profound love between Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin—a love so deep Chu Xiuming was willing to die for his wife—and he did not feel such intensity for Tarou. Feeling abandoned, Tarou lamented that her own brother, Hute, did not truly want her.
Chu Xiuyuan tried to persuade her to trust her brother, sharing that he had lost his own family and envied those who had one, emphasizing that Hute's strictness was a form of protection. Tarou dismissed his words as excuses. Hute, reflecting on Chu Xiuming's words, was beginning to let go of his hatred when he found a note from Tarou announcing her departure.
Panicked, he rushed to Chu Xiuming's quarters and, finding Chu Xiuyuan there, accused him of taking her away. Chu Xiuyuan clarified that he had refused Tarou's request to leave with him. Enraged, Hute challenged Chu Xiuyuan to a fight, but Chu Xiuming intervened, urging them to focus on finding Tarou. They quickly organized a search. Hute eventually found Tarou perched high on a city wall.
He angrily scolded her for running away, but Tarou burst into tears, accusing him of always yelling and never truly caring for her. She felt abandoned by everyone and declared her intent to leave permanently. Chu Xiuyuan tried to console her, reminding her that her brother had been frantic with worry. Realizing the impact of his harshness, Hute apologized, admitting that his father had raised him with sternness and he didn't know how else to express his care.
He promised to change and begged her not to leave, reminding her that she was his only family. Tarou made him swear on their father's name to never yell at her again and, most importantly, to let go of their hatred. Hute solemnly agreed. With their family ties mended, Princess Maya, Yuan'er, Hute, and Tarou gathered to bid farewell to Chu Xiuming's party.
Hute expressed his respect for Chu Xiuming, acknowledging that the war was the true enemy and that letting go of hatred was a form of self-forgiveness. As they departed, Tarou playfully called out to Chu Xiuyuan, claiming she hadn't really liked him and then cheekily told him to reconsider marrying her. Back at the General's Mansion, Chu Xiuming received secret reports that several ministers had petitioned the Emperor to investigate him for embezzling army pay.
Seeing an opportunity, he decided to use their accusations to his advantage. He instructed Xiao Su to create a fake ledger detailing five years of accounts, fabricating evidence of embezzlement and falsifying soldier numbers. His plan was to have Xiao Su deliver the incriminating ledger to the Emperor, forcing a recall to the capital where he could expose his true enemies and attend to other critical matters.
That evening, Shen Jin surprised Chu Xiuming by wearing a vibrant Eagle tribe costume. He was captivated and, noticing her bare feet were cold, tenderly warmed them. He then presented her with a beautiful jade pendant, a cherished gift from his late aunt who had doted on him as a child. He confessed that his aunt had died under mysterious circumstances, and he was determined to clear her name.
The pendant, he explained, was meant for the woman he wished to protect for a lifetime. Deeply moved, Shen Jin assured him that she was now his family and would never let him face his burdens alone. Chu Xiuming confessed that before meeting her, he was the cold "Demon General," but she had warmed his heart and made him feel human again. In the following days, preoccupied with his plans, Chu Xiuming tasked Chu Xiuyuan with accompanying Shen Jin.
Shen Jin quickly grew reliant on his help, from running errands to making dumplings for Chu Xiuming. Meaty observed their growing proximity with concern, cautioning Shen Jin about maintaining proper boundaries and revealing that Chu Xiuyuan had even inquired about Shen Jin's irregular menstruation out of concern. Stung by the realization that Chu Xiuming had delegated her care so completely, Shen Jin felt forgotten and immediately set off for the military camp to confront him.
She burst into his tent, where he was discussing his plan with Xiao Su, and accused him of neglecting her and entrusting her to his subordinate without regard for her feelings or potential gossip. To her irritation, Chu Xiuming began to laugh. He then revealed the truth: Chu Xiuyuan was his younger brother, making him Shen Jin's brother-in-law.
Chu Xiuming explained that Chu Xiuyuan was the secret orphan of the late Eighth Prince, who had been the Crown Prince, and his own aunt, the Crown Princess. Years ago, their mansion mysteriously burned down, killing everyone except the infant Chu Xiuyuan, who was rescued and secretly raised by Chu Xiuming's father. Since his parents' deaths, Chu Xiuming had been investigating the fire to restore Chu Xiuyuan's identity and clear his aunt's name.
Stunned, Shen Jin’s anger turned to empathy, and she vowed to stand by him, protect their secret, and bear the heavy burden with him. Grateful, Chu Xiuming told her he had one more gift for her: he was taking her back to the capital to reunite with her mother.
Episode 16 Recap
Shen Jin’s husband, Chu Xiuming, shared a grave secret with her concerning Xiuyuan’s life. He recounted how the former crown prince had been an upright and open-minded ruler, while his own Chu family had been meritorious and loyal for generations. Shen Jin pledged to protect this secret and safeguard Xiuyuan, earning Chu Xiuming’s deep affection. He then revealed his special gift for her: they were returning to the capital city.
Shen Jin was overjoyed at the prospect of reuniting with her mother. Meanwhile, the imperial court had taken action. Xiao Su informed the Emperor that he had verified the military accounts, confirming the accusations against Chu Xiuming. Consequently, the Emperor issued a decree recalling Chu Xiuming, Count Yongning, to the capital to answer for his alleged crimes of embezzling military pay and falsifying the number of soldiers.
Before departing the General’s Mansion, Shen Jin bid an emotional farewell to Mammy Qingqiu and Xiao Cong. Xiao Cong, saddened by her mistress’s departure, was consoled by Leopard Head, who awkwardly misinterpreted her distress as romantic interest in him, leading to a humorous exchange where Xiao Cong vehemently denied his assumption. Upon their arrival in the capital, Shen Jin observed the bustling, familiar streets, which had grown even more elaborate.
As Chu Xiuming had to report to the imperial court immediately, Shen Jin proceeded to Prince Rui’s Mansion alone. He advised her to exercise patience and avoid conflict while he was away, promising to handle any issues upon his return. Inside Prince Rui’s Mansion, Shen Jin’s half-sisters, Shen Zi and Shen Jing, had already heard of Chu Xiuming’s impending disgrace. Believing his status as an official facing charges would taint their family, they plotted to have Shen Jin disowned.
They began by removing valuable items from her mother’s living quarters, speaking scornfully. When Shen Jin confronted them, Shen Zi, asserting her authority, dismissively ordered Shen Jin to clean the front yard like a servant. Recalling Chu Xiuming’s advice, Shen Jin agreed. She then visited her mother, noting the empty room and confirming her mother’s difficult living conditions, saddened that her father had not kept his promise to care for her.
At the imperial court, Chu Xiuming, in full military attire, faced accusations of embezzling military pay and fabricating troop numbers. Despite the seemingly irrefutable evidence of the account books bearing his military seal, many officials who had fought alongside him defended his character. Chu Xiuming acknowledged the authenticity of the documents but explained his actions were not to enrich himself.
He revealed that the annual military pay of one tael of silver per soldier was insufficient for armor, weapons, or basic sustenance. To prevent his loyal troops from feeling abandoned, he had falsified the accounts to double the funds, which he then distributed to the soldiers in the Emperor’s name, thereby boosting morale and ensuring their loyalty to the throne.
He asserted that the Emperor must have been unaware of the truth and implored him to investigate who had concealed it. The Emperor, recognizing the merit in Chu Xiuming’s actions, commended him for his benevolence. However, he also acknowledged that falsifying records was improper. As a result, Chu Xiuming was promoted to Cavalry General for his contributions, but he received neither reward nor punishment, as his merits were deemed to balance his transgression.
The Emperor also declared that he would personally oversee military pay matters moving forward. Meanwhile, in a teahouse, a cloaked figure manipulating a jade thumb ring instructed a government official to simply observe the unfolding situation, indicating a deeper conspiracy was at play. Back at Prince Rui’s Mansion, Shen Zi and Shen Jing continued their schemes.
With Prince Rui away, Shen Zi put Shen Jin in charge of the evening banquet, planning for her to fail so they could blame her and expel her from the family. She dismissed all the kitchen staff and sent Meaty away, leaving Shen Jin to manage alone. That evening, Prince Rui returned to the mansion. Shen Jin presented grilled meat skewers, a special dish from the Eagle’s territory.
She meticulously demonstrated how to roast the meat on red willow branches over charcoal. The Prince, captivated by the aroma and unique cooking method, found the taste incredibly delicious. As she cooked, Shen Jin sincerely thanked her father for taking care of her mother, which caused Prince Rui evident embarrassment. Furious at Shen Jin’s success, Shen Zi and Shen Jing fumed, vowing to make her pay. Separately, Meaty encountered Xiao Su on the street.
Their brief reunion was cut short when Xiao Su, claiming to be on a secret mission, had to depart swiftly, leaving Meaty feeling dejected. The next day, as Shen Jin walked with her mother in the garden, Shen Zi and Shen Jing approached with a plate of spoiled meat. They claimed that Shen Jin’s grilled meat had made them ill and demanded an apology.
Shen Jin found their accusations baseless, pointing out that Prince Rui and her mother had suffered no ill effects. When they insisted she either eat the spoiled meat or apologize, Shen Jin, unwilling to distress her mother, prepared to comply. At that moment, Chu Xiuming arrived. Stern and imposing, he was a stark contrast to the "Demon General" of rumors. He forcefully confronted Shen Zi and Shen Jing, warning them never to harm his wife.
Intimidated by his presence, the sisters quickly retreated. After sending the sisters away, Chu Xiuming’s demeanor softened as he respectfully greeted his mother-in-law. Prince Rui warmly welcomed his "excellent son-in-law," praising Chu Xiuming’s recent promotion to Cavalry General as a source of great honor for the family. He then suggested that Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin stay at his mansion until their own capital residence was ready. Shen Jin agreed, much to the fury of Shen Zi and Shen Jing.
The sisters, still intent on revenge, plotted to humiliate the "uncultured brute" during Prince Rui’s upcoming birthday celebration. Later, Chu Xiuming met with Xiuyuan and ordered him to distance himself, even feigning a break in their relationship. He explained it was a military command crucial for Xiuyuan’s safety during this critical period. Soon after, Shen Jin’s elder sister and her husband arrived at Prince Rui’s Mansion, acknowledging Chu Xiuming’s new prestigious title.
Episode 17 Recap
During Prince Rui's birthday banquet, his daughters and their husbands gathered to offer congratulations. Shu and her husband were first to wish Prince Rui a long life and boundless happiness. Soon after, Shen Zi presented her father with a painting, claiming it was a famous piece and meticulously detailing its artistic merits. She subtly suggested that Chu Xiuming, being merely a general, lacked refinement and education.
Shen Jin was visibly annoyed by Shen Zi's thinly veiled insults, but Chu Xiuming calmly leaned in and whispered to her, asking her to trust him. As the painting was brought closer to Shen Jin, she dramatically tore it in half. A surprised Prince Rui was about to question her action when Chu Xiuming interjected, explaining that the painting was a forgery.
He pointed out that the artist Tong Douzi's distinctive forceful strokes were imperfectly replicated, with repetitive lines that a master wouldn't make. Furthermore, he noted that the paper was contemporary official Xuan paper, not the civilian paper of the previous dynasty, which proved it was fake. To compensate, Chu Xiuming instructed Meaty to present another scroll, which turned out to be the "Bamboo Sea and Autumn Wind" painting that Prince Rui had long sought.
Prince Rui was overjoyed, declaring that Shen Jin knew his heart best. Meanwhile, Shen Zi and her younger sister were furious, feeling publicly humiliated by Shen Jin and the unexpected wit of Chu Xiuming, who they realized was both brainy and brawny. Shen Zi, unable to contain her anger, decided to seek assistance from someone more formidable: Prince Rui's new concubine, Mother Bai, who was soon to return to the mansion.
She believed Mother Bai was ruthless enough to handle Shen Jin, describing it as "using another person to get rid of our adversary." A few days later, Mother Bai returned to the Prince's Mansion, and Prince Rui warmly welcomed her, acknowledging her pious prayers for his health and the mansion's peace. Shen Jin's mother, Princess Rui, attempted to greet Mother Bai as "sister," but Mother Bai pointedly ignored her.
Shen Jin then stepped forward to address Mother Bai, asserting her mother's greetings. Mother Bai, however, smugly stated that, by seniority, even General Chu Xiuming should address her as "Mother Bai," let alone Shen Jin. Despite her internal frustration, Shen Jin reluctantly bowed and uttered "Mother Bai" as instructed by her mother. Feeling like "a mean person holding sway," Shen Jin left, convinced Mother Bai was trouble.
Later, Shen Zi visited Mother Bai, offering her specially prepared snacks and profusely flattering her. Shen Zi praised Mother Bai's character and predicted she would soon manage the entire Prince's Mansion. She then subtly poisoned Mother Bai's ear against Shen Jin, alleging that Shen Jin, emboldened by her general husband, was arrogant and disrespectful, even hinting that Shen Jin might try to help her mother regain favor with Prince Rui.
Mother Bai, convinced by Shen Zi's words, resolved to subject Shen Jin to proper discipline and promptly dispatched her personal maid, Zhu'er, to snoop around Shen Jin's quarters. Meaty observed Zhu'er peeking into their room, realizing that Mother Bai had quickly begun to act against them. That evening, Shen Jin confided in Chu Xiuming about her frustration with Mother Bai, describing her as a snobbish former songstress.
Chu Xiuming advised Shen Jin to control her temper to avoid trouble for her mother and even suggested moving out if she was unhappy. Shen Jin, however, worried about leaving her mother alone. She then playfully accused men of being greedy for multiple wives and teased Chu Xiuming about how many concubines he planned to take. Chu Xiuming reassured her, affirming that he needed only her in his life and that her "monkey business" was charming.
He affectionately called her his "little demon." The following morning, as Shen Jin was having breakfast, Zhu'er arrived, claiming Mother Bai had sent pastries for all the young ladies and wished to observe them eating to gather feedback. Shen Jin tried to refuse politely, but Zhu'er insistently pleaded, citing severe punishment if she failed. Zhu'er even implied Shen Jin was refusing because she suspected foul play with the pastries.
Meaty "accidentally" dropped the plate, hoping to end the interaction, but Zhu'er immediately produced another portion. Just then, Chu Xiuming entered. He tasted the pastry, found it sweet and palatable, but told Zhu'er that his wife, Countess Yongning, did not like sweet food and requested Mother Bai not to send any more in the future. After Zhu'er left, Shen Jin expressed concern that the pastries might contain harmful substances.
Chu Xiuming calmed her, stating that those who scheme openly, like Mother Bai, are less dangerous than those who act with a smile while plotting in secret. Soon after, Prince Rui announced that His Majesty had bestowed several pieces of cloth upon the mansion for the young ladies, along with a tailor for custom fittings. At the selection, Shu's husband showed no interest in choosing fabric, complaining about women's frivolousness before leaving to study.
Shen Zi, trying to assert her status, hinted that Shu's marriage, despite appearances, was unhappy and empty, advising Jing not to envy it. When it came to selecting fabrics, Shen Zi tried to claim a beautiful blue piece that Chu Xiuming had pointed out would suit Shen Jin. Jing then feigned meekness and asked for the same fabric, playing on the family's kindness.
Although Shen Jin was about to protest, Chu Xiuming subtly intervened, graciously allowing Jing and Shen Zi to take the chosen fabrics for themselves, citing the importance of maintaining harmony within the mansion over mere trifles. Shen Jin later questioned his politeness, but Chu Xiuming explained it was to avoid gossip. To compensate for Shen Jin missing out on the imperial fabrics, Chu Xiuming took her to the capital's best fabric store.
On their way, Chu Xiuming openly held Shen Jin's hand, to her slight embarrassment, but he teasingly reminded her of his bolder displays of affection in the frontier markets. While shopping, Shen Jin suggested they buy white fox fur for Shu, explaining that as a concubine's daughter, she rarely received imperial gifts, but Shu, as the eldest, always shared her portions with her. They purchased three white fox furs for Shu and Shen Jin's mother.
Returning from the market, Shen Jin noticed Zhu'er rushing into an inn. Later, as they arrived back at the Prince's Mansion, Shen Jin saw Zhu'er assisting Mother Bai, confirming Mother Bai had also visited the same inn, which struck Shen Jin as peculiar. Meanwhile, Shu was discovered holding an undergarment, visibly distressed, which she quickly hid as Shen Jin entered. Shen Jin then presented Shu with the white fox furs, genuinely delighting her eldest sister.
Soon after, Imperial Physician Wang arrived at Princess Rui's request to check Shu's pulse. He advised Shu to relax and avoid anger, reassuring her that her health would improve and she would have more children. Shen Jin then asked Imperial Physician Wang to check her own pulse for signs of pregnancy. After examining Shen Jin, the physician remained silent. Sensing something amiss, Chu Xiuming also offered his wrist.
The Imperial Physician checked both their pulses, sighing repeatedly, leaving Shen Jin increasingly perplexed and wondering if she and Chu Xiuming had contracted some strange illness or were unable to conceive.
Episode 18 Recap
Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming lay awake, their unease from the doctor's strange behavior keeping them from sleep. Shen Jin asked Chu Xiuming where he was going as he got out of bed, and he replied that he was going to read. The next morning, Shen Jin observed Bai Rou, dressed in unusually plain clothes, hurrying out of the mansion through a side gate. Shen Jin approached her, remarking on her distinctive change in attire.
Bai Rou claimed she and her maid, Zhu'er, were going to a monastery to offer incense and pray for the mansion's fortune. When Shen Jin inquired about an elaborately packed box Zhu'er was carrying, Bai Rou quickly dismissed it as ordinary offerings hastily packed. Shen Jin offered to accompany them, but Bai Rou firmly refused, citing the need for purification and a clear mind for blessings, implying Shen Jin's presence would bring misfortune. Shen Jin conceded and let them go.
Sensing something was amiss, Shen Jin secretly followed Bai Rou, who deliberately led her into a secluded alley. There, thugs suddenly surrounded Shen Jin. Just as they were about to attack, Chu Xiuming swiftly intervened, incapacitating the assailants in moments. He then took Shen Jin home, explaining that he had followed her after noticing her worried expression as she left the mansion. Back home, Shen Jin told Chu Xiuming that Bai Rou's strange actions had made her suspicious.
Chu Xiuming revealed that he too had seen an unfamiliar figure heading towards Bai Rou's room one night, and Shen Jin added that her mother had mentioned frequent thefts within the mansion. Since Bai Rou held the keys to the treasury, they suspected she was colluding with an outsider. Chu Xiuming advised Shen Jin not to act on their suspicions without concrete evidence, fearing a false accusation could backfire, and assured her he would investigate the matter himself.
The next morning, Shen Jin encountered Zhu'er in a corridor with an unfamiliar man dressed as a servant. When questioned, Zhu'er nervously claimed he was hired by Bai Rou to copy scriptures, then quickly changed her story to say he was her cousin visiting for a family emergency. Shen Jin let them go but warned Zhu'er to be careful not to tarnish Bai Rou's reputation. Later, Bai Rou scolded Zhu'er for her carelessness.
As her only confidant, she instructed Zhu'er to tell their accomplice to stay away for a few days to avoid raising suspicion. Bai Rou was growing frustrated, as Shen Jin seemed to be watching her every move, often appearing whenever she tried to leave and pointedly advising her to sever ties with suspicious individuals. Feeling cornered, Bai Rou arranged a meeting with Chu Xiuming at an inn, using Shen Jin's name to lure him there.
When Shen Jin arrived, Bai Rou immediately clung to Chu Xiuming, feigning innocence and claiming she thought Shen Jin had invited her. Unswayed, Shen Jin sharply rebuked her, reminding her that Chu Xiuming was not as easily fooled as Prince Rui. Defeated, Bai Rou left in disgrace. Back at the mansion, Chu Xiuming explained he had gone to the inn only to uncover Bai Rou's intentions.
He commended Shen Jin for her composure, but she, detecting a lingering "scent of a seductress" on his shawl, immediately instructed Meaty to burn it. Chu Xiuming jokingly offered to remove all his clothes, but Shen Jin playfully called him a "silly general" and ordered Meaty to prepare his bath. That night, Chu Xiuyuan secretly followed Bai Rou as she carried a chest of valuables out of the mansion.
He watched her enter a secluded room, confirming that she was indeed having an illicit affair. During the Mid-autumn Festival feast, Shen Zi and Shen Jing presented Bai Rou with lavish gifts and praised her scheme to use a "borrowed knife" to deal with Shen Jin. Bai Rou then mocked Shen Jin for not preparing a gift. In response, Shen Jin presented her father, Prince Rui, with a beautiful piece of jade specially chosen by her mother, Consort Chen.
Prince Rui was deeply pleased. Throughout the feast, Bai Rou deliberately plied the Prince with alcohol, clearly planning to act that night. Once the household was asleep, Bai Rou carried a final chest of jewels to the secret room, murmuring that she had brought enough for her and her lover, Bin, to live on for the rest of their lives. Upon entering, however, she was met not by Bin, but by Chu Xiuyuan, sword in hand.
Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin then appeared, followed by Prince Rui himself. Caught, Bai Rou frantically tried to lie, claiming Bin had kidnapped her and forced her to steal from the treasury, showing fake marks on her neck as proof. Shen Jin exposed her deceit, pointing out that the jewels bore the mansion's sigil and could only have come from the treasury, to which Bai Rou alone had the key.
When Prince Rui ordered Bin to be bludgeoned to death, he confessed everything, revealing that Bai Rou had planned the entire scheme to steal the family's wealth and run away with him. A furious Bai Rou denied it, and the two descended into a bitter argument, hurling insults at each other. With the shameful affair exposed, Prince Rui expressed his gratitude to Chu Xiuming, who gave the credit to Shen Jin.
Prince Rui acknowledged Shen Jin as his "good daughter" and, at her request, promised to treat Consort Chen better. He then pleaded with them to keep the domestic scandal a secret. With the General's Mansion completed, Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin prepared to leave. After bidding farewell to Prince Rui and Consort Chen, they decided to share a single horse, enjoying the city scenery on their way to their new home.
Shen Jing and her friends watched them go, filled with bitter envy over Shen Jin's good fortune. In their new home, Chu Xiuming admitted his unease with the complex politics of the Imperial City. Shen Jin reassured him, declaring herself his "strategist" and vowing to help him navigate the court. She proposed they first win the support of the civil officials by targeting their respected leader, Lord Situ, reasoning they should "capture the leader to defeat his force."
Chu Xiuming noted Lord Situ’s arrogance and disdain for military men, but Shen Jin suggested they "cater to his likes." She revealed that Lord Situ was fond of the pitch-pot game, a skill she had mastered in her youth. As she began to teach Chu Xiuming, the battle-hardened general surprised her by grasping the game with natural and impressive accuracy.
Episode 19 Recap
Following his wife's advice from the previous night, General Chu Xiuming arrived at Lord Situ's mansion with a set of pitch-pot tools. The steward initially tried to turn him away, claiming Lord Situ was unwell, but relented when Chu Xiuming presented the gift. Upon meeting, Lord Situ remarked on the profound philosophy embodied in the seemingly simple game. Chu Xiuming humbly replied that his own skills were crude and that he would likely make a fool of himself.
Chu Xiuming returned to his mansion with a full money pouch, much to Shen Jin's dismay. She realized he had won every game against Lord Situ, which would have offended the man rather than won his favor. Socializing, she explained, was not a battle to be won at all costs. She instructed him to go back and intentionally lose. The next day, Chu Xiuming followed her advice and lost every round, yet Lord Situ still seemed displeased.
Frustrated, Chu Xiuming lamented that he was only suited for the battlefield, finding the nuances of pitch-pot—which required an evenly matched game of give and take—far too complex. Shen Jin urged him not to give up. On the third day, Shen Jin, disguised as a young man, accompanied Chu Xiuming. When Lord Situ prepared to play again, she stepped forward, boldly claiming that while she wasn't a master, she had never been defeated.
She engaged Lord Situ in a spirited game that ended in a tie. Thoroughly delighted, Lord Situ declared them kindred spirits and called her 'little brother,' offering his full support for any future needs. Shen Jin accepted the new familial bond by addressing him as 'older brother,' then revealed her true identity as General Chu's wife. Charmed by her cleverness, Lord Situ welcomed her warmly.
Shen Jin then leveraged their new friendship to ask a favor for her "little brother," securing the position of Urban Management Supervisor of the Imperial City for her actual brother-in-law, Chu Xiuyuan. Later, while helping Lord Situ put away the pitch-pot tools in an inner room, Shen Jin noticed a loose floorboard under a shelf that sank when stepped on, making her suspect a hidden chamber. She mentioned it to Chu Xiuming, who dismissed her speculation.
Feeling she had performed a great service, Shen Jin playfully demanded a reward from Chu Xiuming, joking that he should repay her with his body. She then turned serious, explaining that their new life in the Imperial City came with significant expenses, especially after exhausting their savings on renovating the mansion. To maintain the general's dignity and manage household costs, she proposed starting a business.
Deciding that clothing was a lucrative trade, she convinced Chu Xiuming, who gave her his full financial support. Shen Jin, accompanied by her maid Meaty, tirelessly scoured the streets for a suitable shop location. She eventually settled on a riverside spot on Fuheng Street, believing that "water brings wealth." Her brother-in-law, Chu Xiuyuan, in his new capacity as Urban Supervisor, praised her choice as insightful.
When discussing fabrics with Chu Xiuming and Chu Xiuyuan, she considered using unique frontier Eagle cloth, but both men advised her to stick to traditional Han materials more suited for the capital's tastes. Shen Jin agreed to a more conservative approach. As renovations began, Meaty noticed the shop across the street was also preparing to open, but Shen Jin dismissed it as an unlikely coincidence that they would be competitors.
Meanwhile, Chu Xiuming and the Prime Minister had an audience with the Emperor, who praised them both and entrusted the Prime Minister with investigating the matter of military pay. Later, Chu Xiuming visited Shen Jin at her nearly-finished shop with snacks. She gently explained that to avoid gossip and protect her business's independence, he, as a General, should visit less frequently. He reluctantly agreed.
Chu Xiuming also summoned two of his father's former subordinates, inquiring about his father's visit to the capital around the time of the Eighth Prince's death. They recalled his father had gone alone to the residence of the man who was now Emperor, deepening Chu Xiuming's suspicion about the Emperor's role in the past tragedy. Shen Jin visited her mother at Prince Rui's Mansion.
Her mother expressed concern over Shen Jin's focus on the shop and urged her to prioritize having a child, calling it a wife's fundamental duty. Shen Jin reassured her that she and Chu Xiuming were in no rush. Later, Shen Jin's eldest sister, Shen Shu, came to congratulate her on the new shop and confided her own troubles. She revealed that after a miscarriage, an imperial physician had told her conceiving again would be difficult.
The miscarriage had occurred shortly after her husband's cousin, Yun Niang, moved in and gave her a "tonic." Now, Yun Niang was pregnant with Shen Shu's husband's child and, being a relative of the Marchioness, was favored by her mother-in-law, leaving Shen Shu's position in the household precarious. Outraged, Shen Jin vowed to help. She accompanied Shen Shu to her in-laws' mansion, where she was greeted with great respect due to her status as the General's wife.
The pregnant Yun Niang casually addressed Shen Jin as "sister," prompting a sharp rebuke. Feigning ignorance of Yun Niang's identity, Shen Jin questioned the familiarity of a mere concubine. When Shen Shu's husband defended Yun Niang, Shen Jin declared she was unwelcome and turned to leave. Seizing the opportunity, Shen Shu stated she would leave with her sister, citing the humiliation she had endured.
Episode 20 Recap
Shen Jin arrived at the Mansion of the Marquis Yongle to visit her eldest sister, Shu, who was distressed due to the presence of Yun Niang, her husband's cousin and concubine. Shen Jin confronted her brother-in-law, the Heir of the Marquis Yongle, questioning the legality of having Yun Niang as a concubine, as only officials ranked Duke and above were permitted to have one.
Yun Niang, who was pregnant, apologized, but Shen Jin pointed out that her lack of proper etiquette made her unsuitable to raise the child. Shen Jin proposed that Shu, who had previously suffered a miscarriage and yearned for a child, should raise Yun Niang's baby. The brother-in-law admitted he had considered this, and the Lady of Prince Rui's Mansion, also present, expressed anger at not being informed of Shu's miscarriage, emphasizing the baby's importance as the mansion's first grandchild.
To protect the family's reputation and avoid implicating Chu Xiuming, Shen Jin suggested that after giving birth, Yun Niang be given money to remarry. Despite Yun Niang's protests, the brother-in-law agreed. Shen Jin then reassured Shu, advising her to raise the child herself to prevent them from becoming malicious under Yun Niang's influence. Before departing, Shu reminded Shen Jin to consider having her own children. Upon returning to the General's Mansion, Shen Jin presented Chu Xiuming with a tonic soup.
Chu Xiuming expressed more concern for Shen Jin's fatigue from preparing her fabric shop's opening, apologizing for his inability to help. After a playful exchange, she broached the topic of having children. Chu Xiuming affirmed his desire for offspring but suggested they wait until Shen Jin was less burdened by her new shop, allowing her to recover so they could be more settled. Shen Jin readily agreed.
Shen Jin's Jin'er Fabric Shop celebrated its grand opening, but the joyous atmosphere was interrupted when a rival, Ruonan Fabric, opened across the street, luring away her customers. Shen Jin discovered Ruonan Fabric offered similar fabrics at prices twenty percent lower, and to her surprise, the owner was Wu Ruonan, a formidable figure from her past. Wu Ruonan, formerly "Brother Nan from North Street," recognized Shen Jin as "Master Jin from South Street," recalling their street rivalries.
Shen Jin was astonished to learn "Brother Nan" was a woman. Wu Ruonan also recognized Meaty, recounting how she had disappeared years ago before a planned gang fight. Meaty revealed Shen Jin was now the General's Lady, while Wu Ruonan explained she had left street life to become an escort. Shen Jin, Wu Ruonan, Meaty, and Xiao Su gathered, rekindling their friendship over drinks.
They reminisced about their younger days as rival street leaders, playfully bickering over who won their fights. They laughed about Meaty mistaking the bald-headed Wu Ruonan for a boy. Shen Jin, now a General's Lady, offered Wu Ruonan any help she might need. As a gesture of goodwill for her struggling shop, Shen Jin offered Wu Ruonan free fabrics, but Wu Ruonan insisted on paying, refusing to let her friend incur a loss.
Chu Xiuyuan, the new market supervisor, arrived at Jin'er Fabric Shop to announce a palace fabric procurement bid, with criteria of price, quality, and quantity. Shen Jin was interested but worried about competing with Ruonan Fabric's low prices. As Chu Xiuyuan prepared to inform the rival shop, Wu Ruonan revealed herself as its owner, shocking Shen Jin, who felt deceived by the concealment.
At that moment, Chu Xiuyuan seemed to have a flash of recognition and accepted Wu Ruonan's invitation to discuss the bid over tea. Inside Ruonan's shop, Chu Xiuyuan inquired about her past, recounting how years ago, as a boy, he was saved from falling off a cliff by a girl with a horsewhip. Wu Ruonan vaguely confirmed the memory, and Chu Xiuyuan revealed he was the boy she had saved, confessing he had been smitten with her ever since.
Wu Ruonan brushed off her heroism as a trivial matter for a "child of the Jianghu" and asserted her focus on ambition, not romance. Despite her dismissal, Chu Xiuyuan vowed to visit her again. Facing the threat of Ruonan Fabric's lower prices, Shen Jin concluded her only path to profitability was to win the palace procurement order. As she discussed this with Meaty, they saw Chu Xiuyuan enter Ruonan Fabric.
Subsequently, she observed Chu Xiuyuan presenting a gift to Wu Ruonan, who then chased him outside to return it. Misinterpreting the exchange from a distance, Shen Jin concluded that Wu Ruonan was bribing Chu Xiuyuan and that he had accepted it. Alarmed, she immediately summoned him. Shen Jin questioned Chu Xiuyuan about the bid. He confirmed that while her shop had a strong chance, Ruonan Fabric had offered the lowest price in the city.
Shen Jin stressed the need for impartiality, which he agreed to. Chu Xiuyuan then cautiously sought her advice on gifts for a woman he had known for a long time, without revealing her identity. Shen Jin suggested cosmetics, hairpins, and pendants and, seeing his shyness, offered to purchase the items on his behalf, which he gratefully accepted. When Chu Xiuming returned, he found Shen Jin examining hairpins and cosmetics.
She explained they were for Chu Xiuyuan to give to a woman he admired. Chu Xiuming was surprised, admitting he was unaware of his brother's interest. Insisting on his responsibility as the elder brother to "check her out," he instructed Shen Jin to inform him immediately if she discovered the woman's identity. As the evening ended, Chu Xiuming firmly ordered a weary Shen Jin to rest. Before sleeping, Shen Jin expressed her worries to Chu Xiuming.
Winning the palace bid required stocking a large amount of fabric in advance, a huge risk if her bid failed. She proposed a new strategy: supplying fabric directly to the noble and official mansions in the capital. Chu Xiuming initially expressed apprehension, concerned that such a venture would compromise his reputation by publicly casting his wife as a merchant. Shen Jin clarified she only sought his opinion and would drop the idea if it embarrassed him. Chu Xiuming quickly softened, reiterating his unwavering support for her ambitions and affirming his belief in her capabilities, promising to be her steadfast backer.
Episode 21 Recap
At Ruonan Fabric, Chu Xiuyuan visits Ruonan, asserting her confidence in winning the palace bid based on merit alone. He reassures her of the process's fairness and offers her a gift of valuable items. Ruonan initially declines, stating she has not earned such gifts and does not use cosmetics, but out of respect, she accepts only a hairpin. Chu Xiuyuan then helps her put it on, complimenting her appearance and causing Ruonan a rare moment of bashfulness.
Before Ruonan departs, Chu Xiuyuan apologizes for his previous abruptness and confesses his sincere affection for her, asking for a chance. Ruonan questions the nature of his feelings, asking if they are a fleeting whim or a true commitment to a lifetime with only her. Chu Xiuyuan earnestly assures her he is serious, having been drawn to her straightforward and loyal character. He expresses his sincere desire to marry her, promising to love and protect her always.
Ruonan, while acknowledging that he seems to understand her, points out that she knows nothing about his background or life. Chu Xiuyuan vows to tell her everything and proposes visiting her fabric shop daily so she can get to know him before making a decision. Ruonan agrees, asking only that he honor his word. Meanwhile, in the imperial palace, the Prime Minister reports to the Emperor on the army pay corruption investigation.
He has found clues suggesting a deliberate attempt to frame General Chu Xiuming, but notes the plot is so obvious it could even be a deceptive maneuver by the General himself. Troubled by the possibility of his trusted general's involvement, the Emperor orders a thorough, covert investigation to uncover the truth.
Separately, Chu Xiuming asks Xiao Su to use his connections to investigate if the fire at the Eighth Prince's Mansion was an accident or arson, a task Xiao Su accepts. At Jin'er Fabric Shop, business is booming after a 20% price reduction. However, Shen Jin grows suspicious seeing Chu Xiuyuan frequently visiting the rival Ruonan Fabric. She goes to investigate and finds Chu Xiuyuan notifying Ruonan that her shop is also a candidate for the palace bid.
When Shen Jin arrives, Ruonan challenges her to a fair competition. The conversation quickly escalates as Shen Jin accuses Ruonan of using predatory pricing that hurts other businesses. Ruonan defends her model of high-volume, low-margin sales. Their rivalry erupts into a price war, with each vowing to win the bid by offering increasingly steep discounts of 30%, 40%, 50%, and finally 60%, as Chu Xiuyuan tries in vain to mediate.
Later that evening, an enraged Shen Jin vents to Chu Xiuming, who soothes her and invites her for a moonlit walk. He reminisces about his time on the border but assures her that with her by his side, his location is irrelevant, a sentiment she shares. The next day, Chu Xiuming questions Chu Xiuyuan about his deep concern for Ruonan.
Chu Xiuyuan reveals that Ruonan is the girl who saved him from a fall years ago and declares his intention to marry her. Chu Xiuming strictly forbids it, citing Chu Xiuyuan's special status and important missions that leave no time for romance, especially with a commoner. Unmoved, Chu Xiuyuan insists his love is real and he is determined to marry her. Taking matters into his own hands, Chu Xiuming invites Ruonan to a teahouse.
Shen Jin, who was watching Ruonan's shop, follows her and is shocked to see her husband leaving the same establishment, immediately suspecting an affair. Inside, Chu Xiuming introduces himself as Shen Jin's husband and, on Chu Xiuyuan's behalf, demands that Ruonan stay away from him. He states that he has other plans for Chu Xiuyuan and cannot let him waste time on her.
Ruonan angrily asks if this is his demand or Chu Xiuyuan's, and when he confirms it is his own, she abruptly leaves. Shen Jin confronts her husband, who gives vague answers about his presence there. Still suspicious, she seeks out Ruonan. Furious over Chu Xiuming's interference, Ruonan vents to Shen Jin, telling her to control her husband and stop his meddling.
She dismisses the idea that childhood feelings could last so long as "absurd" and says her personal affairs are her own. Shen Jin, hearing this out of context, misinterprets it as the fallout of a lover's quarrel between Ruonan and Chu Xiuming, solidifying her belief that they are having an affair and that she might lose her husband as well as her business. Later, Chu Xiuyuan visits Ruonan with a bracelet, but she coldly rejects it.
She tells him to stop visiting, reversing her earlier promise to give him a chance. When he demands a reason, she cites their vast difference in social status. Though he offers to abandon his position for her, she dismisses it as a fleeting promise, cruelly adding that his presence annoys her and she has never had any feelings for him. Heartbroken, Chu Xiuyuan leaves. Dejected, Chu Xiuyuan finds a listless Shen Jin at her shop.
They share their troubles, and Shen Jin asks if a man can truly love his childhood sweetheart forever. She recounts what Ruonan said after meeting with Chu Xiuming, leading her to believe Ruonan is Chu Xiuming's childhood love. The pieces click into place for Chu Xiuyuan, who realizes Chu Xiuming's intervention is the cause of Ruonan's sudden rejection. Appalled by her husband's meddling, and despite their business rivalry, Shen Jin vows to help her brother-in-law reunite with Ruonan.
That evening, Chu Xiuming tries to apologize to Shen Jin with a gift, but she is not mollified. She demands that, as penance, he must agree to let Chu Xiuyuan marry Ruonan. Chu Xiuming flatly refuses, reiterating that Chu Xiuyuan has a special status and cannot be distracted by romance. Shen Jin calls out his hypocrisy, reminding him that he, a great general, is "wasting time" on her, his self-proclaimed "soft spot." She accuses him of unjustly causing both Chu Xiuyuan and Ruonan pain. The argument ends in a stalemate, with both husband and wife resolute in their positions.
Episode 22 Recap
A disagreement arose between Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming regarding Chu Xiuyuan. Shen Jin accused Chu Xiuming of interfering by forcing Ruonan to push Chu Xiuyuan away, causing him immense pain. Despite Chu Xiuming declaring his decision final, Shen Jin asserted her own resolve. Believing Chu Xiuyuan's affections for Ruonan were clear, and since he had no parents to act on his behalf, Shen Jin decided she would propose marriage for him the very next day.
Shen Jin questioned Ruonan about the heavy burdens she carried as an unmarried woman. In response, Ruonan challenged Shen Jin, asking if she was curious why her fabric store offered a long-term 20% discount. Intrigued, Shen Jin agreed to accompany Ruonan to a secret location. Ruonan led her to a remote village filled with the elderly and children, all of whom were grateful recipients of her support.
They explained that Ruonan had taken them in after their family members, who worked as escorts, died or were injured without earning much. Ruonan then recounted how, after leaving the capital years ago, she was cared for by an escort team. As these escorts and their families aged, she brought them to this village and established her fabric store. By having able-bodied villagers escort and deliver goods themselves, she saved on transportation costs, allowing her to offer lower prices.
She emphasized that this was not charity; everyone capable contributed, enabling them to support themselves and their families with dignity. Shen Jin was deeply moved and ashamed, realizing that while she had also become wealthy from humble beginnings, she had only considered her own well-being, whereas Ruonan carried the welfare of an entire community.
Shen Jin declared that Ruonan was doing something truly great, so much so that not only Chu Xiuyuan but even her own husband did not deserve her. Ruonan admitted to having feelings for Chu Xiuyuan but stated her primary focus was to help more people escape poverty. Back at the General's Mansion, Shen Jin continued to praise Ruonan as her new role model, proclaiming she had finally found meaning in her life.
This adoration greatly irked Chu Xiuming, who, feeling neglected, decided it was time to reassert his authority as her husband. The playful but tense exchange quickly escalated, with Chu Xiuming biting her, fueling Shen Jin's accusation that he was jealous and revealing his "wild nature." Later, when Chu Xiuyuan approached Shen Jin, she used a tea analogy to subtly deter him from pursuing Ruonan.
She explained that just as fine tea requires a fitting teapot, Ruonan, with her grand ambitions and immense responsibilities, was a woman far beyond his current standing. Shen Jin urged him to give up, but Chu Xiuyuan remained unwavering, declaring his commitment to winning Ruonan's affection. Chu Xiuming later visited Shen Jin's fabric store, concerned for her well-being.
A shop assistant informed him that Shen Jin had gone to Ruonan's store across the street to discuss business and had not returned. Chu Xiuming found Shen Jin there, offering Ruonan snacks and behaving with an intimacy as if they were already becoming family. He confronted her, accusing her of neglecting her own business to please a competitor.
The argument escalated when he brought up her matchmaking, declaring that Ruonan, a commoner, was not a suitable match for his lieutenant, Chu Xiuyuan. Shen Jin fiercely defended Ruonan and retorted that if status mattered so much, then she, a former commoner herself, was also an unsuitable match for a great general like him. The heated exchange continued, prompting Ruonan to urge them to leave the public space. Defiantly, Shen Jin asserted that her past was an unchangeable fact.
Frustrated, Chu Xiuming threatened to close her store if she continued to be stubborn. That night, Shen Jin insisted on sleeping in separate beds. Chu Xiuming, exhausted by court affairs, expressed his weariness of always having to coax her after their disputes, prompting Shen Jin to tell him not to bother. Meaty and Xiao Su, enjoying a quiet moment, observed Shen Jin and Chu Xiuming leaving their residence at separate times, confirming they had fought.
Meaty, accustomed to their quarrels, reassured Xiao Su that the couple would reconcile, while Xiao Su expressed his hope that their own future would be free from such disputes, vowing that nothing was more important to him than Meaty. Shen Jin later went to Ruonan's fabric store, where she became intoxicated and lamented the societal expectation for women to be endlessly generous. When Chu Xiuming arrived to take her home, a volatile argument ensued.
He expressed his exasperation with Ruonan's influence on both Shen Jin and Chu Xiuyuan, telling them to keep their distance from her. Chu Xiuyuan then appeared, attempting to mediate, but Chu Xiuming's anger only intensified. As the argument reached its peak, Shen Jin, in a drunken fit, dared Chu Xiuming to divorce her as he had threatened before. Enraged, Chu Xiuming accepted her challenge and stormed out, declaring she should not return home.
Shen Jin, shocked into partial sobriety, was left dazed and wandering the streets, unsure of where to go. After Shen Jin's departure, Chu Xiuyuan remained with Ruonan. He offered her a bottle of medicinal wine for sprains, expressing his unwavering commitment and promising to always be by her side, willing to bear any difficulties with her. Shen Jin returned to Prince Rui's Mansion that night, tearfully embracing her mother, Side Concubine Chen, and expressing how much she had missed her.
Unbeknownst to Shen Jin, Chu Xiuming had followed her the entire way. The next morning, Shen Zi, upon hearing of Shen Jin's return, eagerly approached her to mock her. However, Shen Jin, using her status as Countess Yongning, skillfully turned the tables, asserting her authority and reminding her sister of her place. Meanwhile, Xiao Su reported to Chu Xiuming on his investigation into the fire at the Eighth Prince's Mansion years ago.
He confirmed that all occupants had perished, with rumors implicating the current Emperor. Chu Xiuming revealed his personal connection, as his aunt was the Eighth Princess Consort, and he sought the truth of her death. Xiao Su, however, defended the Emperor, describing him as a clear-sighted and wise ruler, despite appearing to be swayed by treacherous officials. Later, Chu Xiuming dispatched Meaty to Prince Rui's Mansion with Shen Jin's belongings.
He also personally visited Side Concubine Chen, reassuring her that Shen Jin was merely having a tantrum and that he found her occasional stubbornness endearing, planning to reconcile with her once she calmed down. However, when Shen Jin later found Meaty with Xiao Su, Meaty revealed the harsh truth: Chu Xiuming was furious and had sent Meaty away because her face reminded him of Shen Jin's, and he did not wish to see it. This blunt explanation further deepened Shen Jin's distress.
Episode 23 Recap
Following their major argument, Meaty decides that Countess Yongning and General Chu Xiuming need a crisis to push them back together. The opportunity arises when Shen Jin’s eldest sister, Shu'er, invites her to her mansion. Bored and irritable, Shen Jin agrees to go. However, her other sisters, Shen Zi and Shen Jing, insist on joining. Worried they might cause trouble, Meaty accompanies Shen Jin, reasoning that an extra person could help if a fight breaks out.
At Marquess Yongle's Mansion, while Shen Jin and Shu'er are conversing, Shen Zi and Shen Jing begin to probe Shen Jin about Chu Xiuming. When she refuses to answer, they insult her mother, Side Concubine Chen. In response, Shu'er slaps Shen Jing. Shen Jing tries to mediate, but this only redirects Shen Zi’s anger toward her.
After Shen Jing points out that Shen Zi is merely jealous of Shen Jin’s title, an enraged Shen Zi slaps her own sister, cutting her face. Later, as Shen Jing waits for the imperial physician, Shen Zi continues to stubbornly defend her actions. Fed up, Shen Jin slaps Shen Zi, and the two argue fiercely. Shu'er's husband, Marquess Yongle, arrives to intervene. Soon after, Princess Rui and Marchioness Yongle arrive to find Shen Jin and Shen Zi still quarreling.
Princess Rui silences Shen Zi, declaring the matter will be settled back at their own mansion. Feeling wronged and unsupported, Shen Zi furiously shoves Shen Jin, who stumbles against a table and collapses in abdominal pain. At a palace banquet, the Emperor learns that an imperial physician has been urgently summoned for Countess Yongning. Hearing this, Chu Xiuming and Prince Rui immediately request to leave.
At the mansion, Chu Xiuming discovers that Shen Jin is pregnant and the fall has made her condition unstable, requiring complete bed rest. He tenderly comforts Shen Jin, begging her to return home with him. He also publicly declares that his mansion will have no further dealings with Shen Zi and vows to take revenge on anyone who harms his wife. Shen Jin is confined to her room in Prince Rui's Mansion for three days.
Her mother, Side Concubine Chen, watches over her, sewing baby clothes. When Princess Rui summons Side Concubine Chen to the main hall, she orders Meaty to make sure Shen Jin doesn't leave. The three mothers—Princess Rui, Side Concubine Xu, and Side Concubine Chen—gather before Prince Rui. Side Concubine Xu tearfully pleads her daughters' case, while Princess Rui, as the main wife, defends Shen Jin and Shu'er.
Side Concubine Chen kneels, passionately arguing that her daughter is being targeted out of jealousy now that her life has improved after suffering at the border. Throughout the confrontation, Prince Rui remains aloof, leaving Princess Rui to decisively uphold justice for Shen Jin. Seizing her chance, Shen Jin sneaks out of the mansion with Meaty. They go to a teahouse, but she is only allowed to drink plain water for the baby's sake.
Annoyed by Xiao Su's arrival and his affectionate behavior with Meaty, Shen Jin leaves, only to run into Chu Xiuming, who has been waiting for her. He embraces her, admitting how much he missed her. He follows her through the streets, but his overprotective nature frustrates her, as he prevents her from buying any street food, and vendors, intimidated by his presence, refuse to sell to her.
Chu Xiuming follows her to her fabric shop, where he corners her for a kiss. They are interrupted by an indignant Side Concubine Xu. Seeing the couple, whom she thought were fighting, acting so affectionately infuriates her, and she leaves in a huff. Once she is gone, Shen Jin playfully pushes Chu Xiuming away, teasing that she has no more use for him.
Meanwhile, Ruonan delivers supplies to the village where Chu Xiuyuan has established a school for the local children. After the children greet her, she realizes Chu Xiuyuan has quietly disappeared. Later, during a downpour, someone leaves a box of exquisite food outside Ruonan's shop. She smiles, knowing it is from Chu Xiuyuan, who watches her from the rain. After her day out, Shen Jin returns to Prince Rui's Mansion.
Although Side Concubine Chen is stern, she softens after Shen Jin apologizes and goes to get her food. The moment she leaves, Chu Xiuming appears with the preserved fruits Shen Jin had been craving all day. Later, while stargazing, Meaty tries to get Xiao Su to ask her a specific question, but the clueless Xiao Su cannot guess what she wants to hear.
Episode 24 Recap
Following his arrival at the Rui Mansion, Chu Xiuming continued to dote on Shen Jin, bringing her candied fruits. After eating a little, Shen Jin urged him to leave before her mother returned, only to realize that Chu Xiuming had likely arranged for her mother to be away. When Shen Jin playfully claimed the fruits weren't tasty, Chu Xiuming leaned in to taste them from her lips, confirming their sweetness and leaving her flustered.
Later that night, Shen Jin hogged all the blankets, leaving Chu Xiuming in the cold. When she became too warm, Chu Xiuming seized the opportunity to slip under the covers with her, promising to behave and simply hold her while they slept. For the next few days, Chu Xiuming neglected his duties to follow Shen Jin everywhere, much to her annoyance.
She complained that his presence had forced her mother into a guest room, but he shamelessly insisted he couldn't sleep without her. After Shen Jin left, Shen Jing approached Chu Xiuming, feigning distress and implying that Shen Jin was avoiding her. Chu Xiuming’s demeanor instantly hardened, and he sternly advised Shen Jing not to eavesdrop and to address her concerns with Shen Jin directly.
Pressured by her mother, Shen Jin was hurried out to return to the General's Mansion with Chu Xiuming. Her mother tearfully entrusted her to Chu Xiuming, begging him not to let Shen Jin run home in sorrow again. Chu Xiuming solemnly promised it wouldn't happen a second time. Shen Jing also appeared, asking to visit the General's Mansion. Shen Jin politely declined, citing a lack of servants and sealed courtyards, which prompted Shen Jing to adopt a wronged expression.
When Shen Jin tried to explain she barely knew Shen Jing's mother, Chu Xiuming intervened. He declared that to avoid further conflict, he and Shen Jin would henceforth avoid any place Shen Jing was present. As they departed in the carriage, Shen Jin felt a sense of satisfaction, and Chu Xiuming praised her composure. Meanwhile, a group of officials led by Lord Liu plotted against Chu Xiuming, seeing his military power as an obstacle to their planned insurrection.
Lord Liu, however, urged patience. Separately, the Prime Minister reported to the Emperor that the investigation into the embezzlement of army pay had stalled. The Emperor then ordered Chu Xiuming to return to his post and guard the frontier. In a remote village, Chu Xiuyuan had become a beloved teacher to the local children. His heart warmed as he saw Ruonan in the distance. Though a strong-willed woman, Ruonan's resolve had softened due to Chu Xiuyuan's presence.
She approached and confessed her deep feelings for him, admitting that his presence gave her a profound sense of security and that she wanted to be the first to open her heart to him. When an imperial physician checked on Shen Jin, he also examined Shen Shu at her sister's suggestion. To everyone's surprise, both sisters were pregnant. Later, when the Heir of Marquis Yongle visited, a distressed Shen Shu, through her maid, brought up her previous miscarriage.
The maid insinuated that the true culprit behind the incident was not just a concubine but someone powerful enough to erase all clues, implying the Marchioness Yongle. The disturbed Heir vowed to investigate the matter, while Shen Shu resolved to protect her unborn child. Back at the General's Mansion, Chu Xiuming was fascinated by the prospect of fatherhood. In the main hall, Chu Xiuyuan and Ruonan sought his blessing for their union.
Chu Xiuming was initially reluctant, citing Ruonan's commoner status. Shen Jin passionately intervened, comparing Chu Xiuyuan's eight-year devotion to Ruonan to Chu Xiuming's own fierce love for her. She argued that Ruonan's selflessness in caring for an entire village of vulnerable people was a testament to her character, making her more than worthy. Moved by Shen Jin’s words, Chu Xiuming realized his folly and gave his blessing, declaring he would listen to his wife.
With the union approved, Shen Jin and Ruonan became sisters-in-law and planned to merge their fabric businesses. However, Chu Xiuming forbade Shen Jin from leaving the mansion for her safety. Soon after, two of Shen Jin's distant relatives arrived with their daughters, hoping to persuade Shen Jin to accept them as Chu Xiuming's concubines to "help" her during her pregnancy. Amused by their audacity, Chu Xiuming trusted Shen Jin to handle the situation.
Shen Jin, maintaining her composure, cleverly dismissed them by offering the girls money as a "dowry" from the General's Mansion, sending them away humiliated. Still bored from her confinement, Shen Jin coerced her maid, Meaty, into helping her climb a wall to escape. Chu Xiuming caught them mid-act, and as a startled Meaty fled, Shen Jin fell safely into his arms.
He gently chided her for her recklessness and promised a grand tour across the country after the baby was born. He then carried her back to her room, ordering servants to remove any hazards, soften her bed, and ensure all her tonics were prepared. He also invited Shen Jin's mother to stay at the mansion to care for her. With all arrangements made, Chu Xiuming prepared for his departure to the frontier.
Overwhelmed by the thought of a long separation, Shen Jin clung to him, weeping. She confessed that despite knowing she should be happy to be free from his "bossing around," she was incredibly sad, and in a fit of emotion, told him not to come back too soon.
Episode 25 Recap
Shen Jin awoke to find Chu Xiuming gone and, despite a momentary fear that he had left without a word, was reassured by her mother that he had gone to the palace. The Emperor held a farewell banquet for Chu Xiuming, who was to return to the frontier. During the banquet, ministers expressed concern about the treasury's emptiness, questioning if the soldiers would have to fight on empty stomachs against mere stragglers and suggested Chu Xiuming's journey was unnecessary.
Nevertheless, Chu Xiuming accepted the Emperor's order. Before his departure, Shen Jin gave him a jade pendant her mother had given her, urging him to return safely and quickly. After he left, Shen Jin found herself feeling emotional and sad, a side effect of her pregnancy, and wistfully wished she could still playfully bite him. At the frontier camp, Chu Xiuming discussed the military situation with Leopard Head.
Leopard Head reported that what was initially a small group of Eagles rebels with minimal power had recently merged with several other factions, significantly increasing their strength. He revealed that Princess Maya had sought their help, as the rebels aimed to seize control of the Eagles' regime. Leopard Head then inquired about Shen Jin, and Chu Xiuming confirmed she was pregnant and would return after the baby was born.
Overjoyed, Leopard Head congratulated him and eagerly went to share the good news with Xiao Cong and the others. Back in the Imperial City, the General's mansion was overflowing with congratulatory gifts from nobles and distant relatives, all eager to curry favor with Shen Jin, now the well-respected Lady of Count Yongning. Shen Jin remarked to her maid, Meaty, about their opportunistic behavior, contrasting it with the past when no one offered help during her family's hardship.
Bored from being confined to the mansion, Shen Jin received a visit from Ruonan, who brought a young girl to cheer her up. The girl presented Shen Jin with an adorable plant, explaining it was common in her village. Enthralled, Shen Jin convinced Ruonan to take her there, where they met Mr. Hua, the elderly man responsible for cultivating all the beautiful flowers in the village. While out, Shen Jin suggested visiting Ruonan's fabric shop.
She confessed to Ruonan that she had simply mentioned her own "Jin Fabric Shop" to the noble ladies visiting her, not expecting it would lead to such a boom in Ruonan's business. Witnessing the constant stream of customers, Shen Jin proposed merging their shops. She reasoned that since Ruonan was to marry Chu Xiuyuan, they would soon be family, and together they could secure the palace's fabric procurement and expand significantly. Ruonan agreed to the merger.
Chu Xiuyuan then appeared at the shop, expressing surprise at Shen Jin's presence, but she explained the merger would allow Ruonan to manage the business, easing her own worries while growing the enterprise. Upon returning home, Shen Jin's mother urgently pulled her away to Prince Rui's Mansion. There, a woman named Dan Qiao had arrived with a letter, claiming to be pregnant with Chu Xiuming's child and stating an officer had sent her to find the Countess Yongning for arrangements.
Maintaining her composure, Shen Jin questioned Dan Qiao, noting the oddity of her coming to Prince Rui's Mansion instead of Count Yongning's, suggesting an uncanny familiarity with the city's family connections for a newcomer. Shen Jin then tricked Dan Qiao by asking about a supposed birthmark on Chu Xiuming's left lower back. When Dan Qiao nervously claimed to have seen it, her lie was exposed, as Chu Xiuming has no such mark.
Dan Qiao confessed that someone had bought her out of a brothel, holding her indenture, and forced her to cause the commotion. Furious, Prince Rui ordered a painter to sketch the culprit, and the resulting portrait strongly resembled Mammy Liu from Shen Zi's quarters. Prince Rui berated Princess Rui for her lax oversight, while the Princess questioned Shen Jing if the incident was retaliation for a past slap, revealing deep-seated family tensions.
Shen Jin later explained that she had seen through the deception from the start, expressing her unwavering faith that Chu Xiuming would never betray her. The newly merged "Jin Fabric Shop" and "Ruonan Fabric" celebrated their grand opening under the new name "Fairview Fabric Shop" with lively fanfare and a discount. Shen Zi and Shen Jing arrived with gifts, but Shen Jin openly snubbed them, refusing the presents by suggesting they could bring misfortune to her unborn child.
Angered, Shen Zi departed, while Shen Jing remarked on Shen Jin's incredible rise in status. Meanwhile, news of Shen Jin's business reached the Emperor. Concerned by Chu Xiuming's military power combined with Shen Jin's growing financial influence, he worried about their potential to raise an army. To address this, the Emperor decided to host a banquet the following day, inviting Prince Rui's family to congratulate Shen Jin on her pregnancy.
In the carriage to the palace, Shen Jing manipulated Shen Zi, suggesting that if the Emperor learned Shen Jin had intentionally taken her place in the marriage, it would be a crime of deceiving the Emperor, which could ruin her. At the palace, while waiting for the Emperor, Shen Jin discussed her hope that her child would have the freedom to choose their own life and marriage with her elder sister, Shen Shu.
Shen Zi then confronted Shen Jin, insulting her mother as a "foot-washing maid," prompting Shen Jin to slap her. When the Emperor arrived, he announced Chu Xiuming's success in annihilating the rebels and bestowed the title of "Imperial Mandate Madame" upon Shen Jin. However, Shen Zi interrupted, proclaiming that Shen Jin had stolen the marriage and that she was the true Second Lady of Prince Rui's family.
Infuriated by the accusation of being deceived, the Emperor ordered the entire Prince Rui household to be imprisoned pending an investigation. As Shen Jin was led away, she quietly told her maid, Meaty, to find her indenture under the bed. She explained it was meant to be a wedding gift for Meaty and Xiao Su, but she was giving it to her now, advising her to treat Xiao Su well as he would be her only support.
Meanwhile, Shen Shu, now Young Mistress of Yongle Hou Mansion, prepared to return to her maiden home to manage affairs. Her husband was stopped from accompanying her by his mother, the Old Madam, who feigned illness. Knowing he wouldn't be coming, Shen Shu packed only her valuables. She refused a gift of money from the Old Madam and departed, shedding a tear as she looked back.
Shortly after, her husband intercepted her carriage, asking why she hadn't waited for him, bringing her a mix of sorrow and joy. Elsewhere, Lord Liu played chess with a mysterious cloaked figure. They discussed their successful scheme, anticipating that Chu Xiuming would be forced to defend his wife, leading the Emperor to punish him for protecting a criminal.
Episode 26 Recap
Chu Xiuming, upon hearing his wife, Shen Jin, had been convicted by His Majesty and that Prince Rui's Mansion was locked down, immediately ordered his horse to be prepared to return to the Imperial City. Meanwhile, in prison, Shen Zi vehemently blamed Shen Jin for their plight, stating that Shen Jin had dragged the entire family down.
Shen Jin's mother comforted her, asserting it wasn't Shen Jin's fault, as she had been unwilling to marry far away in the first place, and that the general would surely come to rescue them. Shen Jin expressed concern for her unborn child.
Outside the prison, Meaty, clutching a deed of gift from Shen Jin, lamented that she wished she was the one imprisoned, confessing that her previous claims of not wanting to suffer with Shen Jin were not her true feelings. Xiao Su reassured her that he would do his utmost to help Shen Jin and that Chu Xiuming would soon return, securing Shen Jin's release.
After returning, Chu Xiuming immediately sought Xiao Su's help to gain access to the prison and see Shen Jin. Despite imperial orders forbidding visitors, Chu Xiuming insisted. Inside the cold prison cell, Shen Jin was speaking to her unborn child, promising it delicious food once they were free. Chu Xiuming entered and addressed her as "Jin," bringing tears to her eyes as the recent days' hardships overwhelmed her.
Shen Jin, though relieved to see him, asked why he was late, and he apologized for the delay. She assured him she was well-fed and rested, and felt no fear with him by her side. She professed her love for him, calling marrying him the best choice she ever made.
Chu Xiuming vowed to beg His Majesty for her pardon and pledged to get her out at all costs, reminding her of their dream to return to the frontier with their son. However, their reunion was cut short when Xiao Su alerted them that someone was approaching, forcing Chu Xiuming to leave hastily while Shen Jin tearfully urged him to go.
Xiao Su informed Chu Xiuming that the Emperor was furious due to courtiers speaking ill of him, especially after his unauthorized return to the Imperial City. Seeing that other officials were gloating, Chu Xiuming refused to wait any longer despite Xiao Su's warnings against impulsiveness, stating he intended to see the Emperor.
Knowing the Emperor would refuse an audience, Chu Xiuming sought help from Lord Situ, who, despite acknowledging the increased risks due to imperial favor and jealousy, agreed to intercede for his sister. Chu Xiuming pleaded with the Emperor to release Shen Jin, offering to take all the blame himself, but the Emperor angrily refused, unwilling to condone the crime of deceit and warning Chu Xiuming not to ruin his family's reputation for one woman.
Upon learning that the Emperor would not release Shen Jin, Chu Xiuming, with Chu Xiuyuan and Xiao Su's help, orchestrated a prison break. Shen Jin initially resisted, fearing she would implicate Chu Xiuming and Prince Rui's Mansion further, but her mother, present in the prison, implored her to leave for the sake of her child.
During the jailbreak, Shen Zi screamed for guards, but Prince Rui, enraged, silenced everyone from his mansion, warning that anyone who spoke of the night's events would no longer be considered part of his family, a desperate attempt to protect Shen Jin. Chu Xiuming, Chu Xiuyuan, and Shen Jin fled. Shen Jin, fearing she would implicate Chu Xiuming, suggested she return, but he reassured her he had a plan.
Chu Xiuyuan proposed they quickly leave the city before dawn, where Ruonan would be waiting. As they made their escape, they were confronted by black-clad assailants. In the ensuing fight, Chu Xiuming sustained an injury. They managed to evade their pursuers and, with Shen Jin concealed within a wagon, passed through the city gates. Lord Liu, investigating the escaped prisoner, questioned a guard about a suspicious mark on his arm, remaining unaware of the fugitives' passage.
After their harrowing escape, Shen Jin felt unwell due to the ordeal and her pregnancy. Outside the city, Ruonan met them and suggested they go to her secluded village, where a skilled physician named Mr. Hua resided. Chu Xiuming initially hesitated, concerned that their presence might endanger Ruonan's community, and asked Chu Xiuyuan about his alternative arrangement, which was two hours away, too long for Shen Jin's condition.
Both Ruonan and Chu Xiuyuan insisted that the hidden village was the best option, prioritizing Shen Jin's health. Shen Jin expressed her gratitude and guilt to Ruonan for the risk she was taking, but Ruonan brushed it off, asserting they were family. Upon arrival, Ruonan brought Shen Jin to her house while Chu Xiuming and Chu Xiuyuan waited outside, as Mr. Hua was a reclusive, mute, and deaf man whose face had been disfigured by a fire.
After Mr. Hua's examination, Ruonan informed Shen Jin that she was merely over-stressed and would recover after taking some medicine. Shen Jin then gently patted her stomach, relieved that her child was well. While Shen Jin rested, Chu Xiuming surveyed Ruonan's village, admiring her dedication to sheltering the disabled and homeless. He confessed to Chu Xiuyuan his regret for his past rudeness towards Ruonan, acknowledging her as a true heroine.
Chu Xiuyuan, however, dismissed the apology, stating that their past interactions had led to Ruonan accepting him. Chu Xiuming felt relieved to know Shen Jin was safe in the secluded village under Ruonan's care. He then pondered the identity of the black-clad attackers who had specifically targeted Shen Jin, suspecting a hidden orchestrator.
Chu Xiuyuan suggested laying low while Shen Jin recovered, but Chu Xiuming, refusing to be a fugitive, stated his commitment to keeping his promise of a stable life for Shen Jin and protecting both their families. Meanwhile, in the Imperial City, Lord Liu dismissed his black-robed assassins who had failed to capture Shen Jin, realizing his plan to force Chu Xiuming into rebellion by killing his wife would not be easily accomplished.
Shen Jin awoke from a nightmare where Prince Rui's family was executed. After taking Mr. Hua's medicine, Chu Xiuming came to check on her. She tearfully asked about her parents, expressing a desire to confess to the Emperor and take all the blame to protect her family and Chu Xiuming. He reassured her that Prince Rui, as a royal family member, would be safe and urged her to focus on her health, promising to handle everything outside.
To lift her spirits, Chu Xiuming took Shen Jin for a walk. They reminisced about their life at the frontier, their first meeting, and his unwavering love and protection for her. Shen Jin expressed a longing to return to their simple life at the border. Chu Xiuming reaffirmed his promise to protect her family and return to the border with their child once all was resolved.
During their walk, Shen Jin noticed a vibrant flower, and Chu Xiuming, upon picking it, observed a similar plant resembling the Sky Lantern Flower. He inquired with Ruonan and then Mr. Hua, learning it was called the Phoenix Flower. Unsure if it was related to the Eagles' Sky Lantern Flower, Chu Xiuming asked Ruonan, who frequently visited the Eagles for escort work, to investigate its connection.
Chu Xiuming reflected on a series of clues: Shen Jin's jade pendant, the ancient lock, the patterns on the letters leading to the Seal of the Eighth Prince, and the pollen from the Ninth Princess's verse, which he now realized was from the Eagles and possibly connected to the Phoenix Flower.
He deduced that a mysterious informant had painstakingly guided him through these clues, possibly through Prince Rui's Mansion due to the close relationship between Princess Rui and the eighth prince's wife, leading him to wonder if any of the eighth prince's family were still alive. His thoughts were interrupted by a shadow outside his window; he pursued it but found no one. Ruonan then arrived to inform him that the city was safe, as confirmed by Chu Xiuyuan's message.
She then assured Chu Xiuming that she would take good care of Shen Jin. Meanwhile, having failed to locate Shen Jin throughout the Imperial City, the Emperor ordered Lord Liu to search the General's Mansion, suspecting Chu Xiuming was harboring her there due to his suspicious silence. When Lord Liu arrived with soldiers, Meaty tried to block their entry, claiming the general was ill. Lord Liu attempted to enter Chu Xiuming's bedroom, but Chu Xiuming emerged himself, confronting Lord Liu and challenging whether the search was the Emperor's command or Lord Liu's personal vendetta.
Episode 27 Recap
After an intense search of the General's Mansion under an imperial edict, Lord Liu’s men found nothing. Chu Xiuming confronted Lord Liu, suggesting he might be either fearing Chu Xiuming would save his wife, Shen Jin, or advising the emperor to cause trouble for him. Lord Liu denied influencing the emperor, and upon hearing the search yielded no results, he departed, advising Chu Xiuming to rest.
Meaty, a trusted servant, expressed immense relief that Shen Jin was safe and Chu Xiuming had returned in time, preventing a catastrophe. She offered to accompany Chu Xiuming to see Shen Jin, but he instructed her to remain in the mansion to avert suspicion, as Lord Liu likely had eyes on them. Meaty agreed, vowing to guard the General's Mansion in their absence.
Meanwhile, in a secluded village, Shen Jin was recuperating, dutifully drinking the bitter medicine provided by Mr. Hua. Ruonan, who was with her, assured her that Chu Xiuyuan had confirmed the city was safe, implying Chu Xiuming had returned and her mother was out of immediate danger. Shen Jin, however, still worried for her mother and the people in Prince Rui’s Mansion, though she expressed faith that Chu Xiuming would save them.
Simultaneously, Lord Liu waited impatiently in a teahouse until a subordinate arrived, not with the anticipated "lord," but with instructions to proceed with their pre-arranged plan. Back at the General's Mansion, Chu Xiuming and Chu Xiuyuan discussed their ongoing investigation into a mysterious black-clad man. Chu Xiuming revealed that a key item related to the Eighth Prince's seal seemed connected to the Sky Lantern Flower, which Ruonan was helping him investigate.
Soon after, an arrow with a coded message related to the Eighth Prince was shot into the General's Mansion. Chu Xiuming understood its meaning and, avoiding Chu Xiuyuan's suspicions, dispatched Chu Xiuyuan to pack clothes for Shen Jin and deliver them to her, emphasizing the importance of keeping Shen Jin and Ruonan's village location a secret and promising to stay in the city himself.
Chu Xiuming then went alone to a pre-arranged meeting at a bridge on the long street where Lord Liu awaited him. Lord Liu initiated the conversation by stating that the emperor had commanded him to investigate Chu Xiuming for rescuing someone and to either arrest him and execute Shen Jin, or fabricate evidence to do so. Chu Xiuming recognized this as an attempt to drive a wedge between him and the emperor.
Lord Liu claimed he was acting under duress and warned that Chu Xiuming faced severe charges for jailbreaking and personal gain, which would endanger both his and Shen Jin's lives. He then offered to help Chu Xiuming survive this predicament.
Chu Xiuming feigned disinterest in confronting the emperor, prompting Lord Liu to reveal the core of his scheme: he was an old subordinate of the Eighth Prince, who was widely expected to be the future emperor but perished in a suspicious fire, clearing the way for the current emperor's ascension. Lord Liu argued that the current emperor's claim to the throne was illegitimate and the fire at the Eighth Prince's Mansion was suspicious.
He confessed that he was too low-ranking to help the Eighth Prince then, but feared Chu Xiuming would suffer a similar fate due to his accomplishments. He proposed an alliance: Lord Liu would work to vindicate the Eighth Prince, and Chu Xiuming would ensure his family's safety. Chu Xiuming insisted he only cared for his family and had no political ambitions, labeling Lord Liu’s proposal as rebellion.
Lord Liu countered that Chu Xiuming's military prowess made him a threat to the emperor, who was determined to eliminate him, and continued loyalty would only lead to their clan’s extermination. He revealed that many of the Eighth Prince’s loyalists were still embedded within the imperial court, and with Chu Xiuming's control over the army, they could collaborate to achieve their goals. Chu Xiuming, however, demanded to meet these other supporters to verify Lord Liu's claims before committing.
Lord Liu readily agreed to arrange such a meeting to demonstrate their sincerity. Unbeknownst to Chu Xiuming, Chu Xiuyuan had followed him. After Chu Xiuming concluded his meeting with Lord Liu, Chu Xiuyuan confronted him, expressing his worry and warning him not to fall for Lord Liu's cunning. Chu Xiuming asked if Chu Xiuyuan also desired to uncover the truth behind the Eighth Prince's death. Chu Xiuyuan affirmed his desire but vehemently rejected using rebellion as a means.
Chu Xiuming, however, was resolute, stating he could not abandon the lead now that they finally had one. He reiterated his instructions for Chu Xiuyuan to care for Shen Jin, and despite Chu Xiuyuan's continued protests, departed, leaving Chu Xiuyuan to go to the village with the clothes. In the village, Shen Jin was still distressed, thinking of her mother and husband while drinking her medicine. Chu Xiuyuan arrived, looking visibly troubled, and handed her the clothes Meaty had packed.
Shen Jin, noticing his grim expression, pressed him for answers. Chu Xiuyuan reluctantly revealed that Lord Liu had approached Chu Xiuming, claiming the emperor intended to arrest him and offering to help him rebel in the Eighth Prince's name. Chu Xiuming was determined to protect Shen Jin and investigate the Eighth Prince's death.
Shen Jin, however, felt the situation hadn't escalated to warrant such extreme measures, as Prince Rui's Mansion was temporarily safe and Chu Xiuming was not in immediate danger. She wrote a letter to Chu Xiuming, urging him to reconsider, and entrusted it to Chu Xiuyuan to deliver.
Soon after, Chu Xiuming was led to a secluded courtyard, where he found not only Lord Liu but also Lord Zuo, General of Right Guard, Lord Liang, Minister of Personnel, and Lord Chen, President of the Censorate, all confirmed as loyalists of the Eighth Prince. They explained that for years they had secretly investigated the Eighth Prince’s death.
Lord Liang recounted how the Eighth Prince, at the former emperor’s command, was investigating treasury corruption and had uncovered the current emperor's involvement just before a fire engulfed the Eighth Prince’s Mansion. The arsonist was caught but committed suicide, and with the new emperor's ascension, the investigation was buried. Lord Chen corroborated the story, stating that while the Eighth Prince's influence had largely collapsed, evidence of the corruption had been preserved. Chu Xiuming demanded to see this evidence.
Lord Liu presented two account books: one presented to the current emperor, and a secret one detailing the true collusion between the current emperor and the Ministry of Revenue, revealing embezzlement from both the national treasury and army pay. Lord Liu highlighted that Chu Xiuming himself was a victim of the withheld army pay, which the emperor had secretly diverted to build a new palace.
They noted that their attempts to speak well of Chu Xiuming for his actions against the Eagles had always displeased the emperor. They showed Chu Xiuming ledgers detailing actual army pay allocations versus secret records proving the funds were used for the new palace. Chu Xiuming questioned why they hadn't acted sooner, despite having witnesses and Lord Zuo's command over capital troops.
They explained that the emperor had intentionally fragmented military power in the capital, rendering Lord Zuo's individual strength insufficient. They admitted they had been waiting for someone of Chu Xiuming's stature, whom they now considered their "pawn," though they quickly clarified that their alliance would be mutually beneficial. Chu Xiuming, however, did not immediately commit, instead listening as they began to discuss their specific plans.
Back at the General's Mansion, Chu Xiuyuan delivered Shen Jin's letter and a safe buckle to Chu Xiuming. He also relayed Ruonan's confirmation that the Eagles' Sky Lantern Flower was indeed the Phoenix Flower. Chu Xiuming asked Chu Xiuyuan to have Ruonan further investigate who in the Imperial City cultivated this plant. In her letter, Shen Jin admitted she had forced Chu Xiuyuan to reveal Chu Xiuming’s plans.
She pleaded with him not to act rashly, whether for the Eighth Prince’s cause or for her and Prince Rui’s Mansion. She argued that if he were to be branded a traitor, she and his family would not be able to continue living. She asked him to personally return the safe buckle to her, a gesture symbolizing their shared fate: if he were to be harmed, she and their child would die with him.
Chu Xiuming recognized the safe buckle as his aunt’s – Chu Xiuyuan’s mother’s – given to him before Chu Xiuyuan was born. His aunt had told him it symbolized a man’s benevolence, protecting his family and the vulnerable, and he was meant to give it to his beloved to keep her safe. Now, Shen Jin's returning it signaled her deep concern and a desperate warning that his current path deviated from his mission, and that she would share his fate.
Despite Chu Xiuyuan’s pleas for him to stop, Chu Xiuming insisted he had a plan and would explain everything once it was resolved. Chu Xiuyuan remained troubled by his brother's resolve and Shen Jin's distress. Later that night, Chu Xiuyuan skillfully created a diversion, allowing Chu Xiuming to slip away and visit Shen Jin in the village.
Inside the humble dwelling, Ruonan was chatting with Shen Jin about the fabric store's booming business since their merger, though she noted the palace had mysteriously halted purchases. Ruonan assured Shen Jin that the business was publicly known to be hers alone, protecting Shen Jin from any implication. As Chu Xiuming arrived, he immediately returned the safe buckle to Shen Jin. Shen Jin, deeply worried, warned him that Lord Liu was cunning and his intentions suspicious.
Chu Xiuming, however, dismissed her concerns, stating he had a plan and that everyone would be safe in the end. Shen Jin pressed him, pointing out that his current actions were reckless and unlike the Chu Xiuming she knew. She even questioned if Lord Liu held some leverage over him. Chu Xiuming denied it and asked for a few more days.
Growing desperate, Shen Jin directly asked if he truly intended to rebel and begged him to leave with her to a place where they were unknown and could live happily. Chu Xiuming reaffirmed his promise to save her mother and Prince Rui's Mansion, but Shen Jin argued his current approach was not the right way. She pleaded with him, for her sake, for their unborn child, for Chu Xiuyuan, and for everyone's well-being, to abandon his dangerous course.
Chu Xiuming simply told her to stay safe and remain in the village. Shen Jin then delivered an ultimatum: if he left that night, she would immediately confess everything to the emperor. Chu Xiuming accused her of being defiant, but she retorted that he was treating rebellion as a trivial matter. He tried to leave, but Shen Jin, panicking, tried to open the locked door, reminding him of her ability to pick any lock.
Chu Xiuming, unable to change her mind, entrusted Shen Jin to Ruonan, instructing her to keep Shen Jin confined to the village, promising a heavy reward for her help. Chu Xiuming then departed hurriedly, leaving Shen Jin distraught and clutching the safe buckle, while Ruonan tried to calm her, reminding her of her pregnancy and the danger of soldiers searching for her.
Later, Shen Jin, still worried, handed Chu Xiuyuan two items, asking him to deliver them personally to Chu Xiuming, conveying that her worry for her husband mirrored his worry for his brother.
Episode 28 Recap
Ministers gathered before the Emperor, expressing concern over Shen Jin's mysterious disappearance from Prince Rui's Mansion. Some suspected General Chu Xiuming had rescued her and was now training soldiers within his mansion, hinting at a potential rebellion. Others defended Chu Xiuming, citing the Chu Family Army's long history of loyal service and undefeated record in defending the nation against the Eagles.
However, accusers highlighted Chu Xiuming's unauthorized return to the capital, his absence from court, and his disregard for imperial orders. The Emperor, acknowledging Chu Xiuming's past military achievements, nevertheless found his recent conduct arrogant and, succumbing to the ministers' appeals for the nation's stability, issued an immediate order for the arrest of Count Yongning, Chu Xiuming.
Shortly after, Xiao Su rushed to Chu Xiuming, warning him that imperial soldiers were on their way and would arrive within the hour, urging him to leave. Chu Xiuming, however, confirmed his decision to proceed with a rebellion was genuine and sought Xiao Su's crucial assistance. Meanwhile, Lord Liu received word from Chu Xiuming, signaling that it was time to act.
Chu Xiuming addressed his assembled soldiers, proclaiming that the Emperor had twisted the truth and that they would march to the imperial palace to seek justice. As they approached the palace, Chu Xiuming, along with Lord Liu's contingent, found an unusually clear path with no imperial guards in sight, which immediately raised Chu Xiuming's suspicions of a trap. Suddenly, Xiao Su appeared, commanding the imperial guards to apprehend the "rebels."
In a swift move, Chu Xiuming turned his blade, pressing it against Lord Liu's neck. Inside the imperial hall, Lord Liu knelt before the Emperor. Chu Xiuming presented falsified account books of the treasury and military payrolls, accusing Lord Liu of years of embezzlement, skimming soldiers' salaries, and colluding with the General of the Right Guard, the Minister of Personnel, and the President of the Censorate.
Lord Liu vehemently denied the charges, attempting to shift the blame to Chu Xiuming, claiming Chu Xiuming was the true mastermind planning a rebellion for years. The Emperor threatened severe punishment, including clan extermination, for those who dared to lie, but offered leniency for accomplices who confessed. Faced with this threat, the implicated officials quickly pointed to Lord Liu as the sole orchestrator. Despite the overwhelming evidence and accusations, Lord Liu refused to reveal who was behind the plot.
The Emperor, in profound disappointment, declared Lord Liu guilty of embezzlement and treason, sentencing him and his entire clan to extermination. Following his exoneration, Chu Xiuming returned, eager to see Shen Jin, but she intentionally avoided him. He then found Chu Xiuyuan and explained that he had to feign a real rebellion to make their enemies believe it.
Chu Xiuming acknowledged his past suspicions about the Emperor's involvement in the tragedy sixteen years ago, recognizing that the Emperor was indeed the ultimate beneficiary. However, he also pointed out that the Emperor was a benevolent and diligent ruler who had brought peace and stability. Chu Xiuming urged Chu Xiuyuan to consider the well-being of the common folk and to let go of his desire for revenge, as reigniting conflict would make them enemies of the state.
Chu Xiuyuan, however, insisted that he had no ambition for the throne; he only sought the truth about who killed his parents. Unbeknownst to them, Mr. Hua, who had been tending to herbs nearby, had quietly listened to their entire conversation. With great difficulty, he emerged and called Chu Xiuyuan by his childhood name, "An'er." He then revealed intimate details of An'er's childhood habits—how he would smile through tears after falling and nervously dig his nails into his palms.
Removing his mask, Mr. Hua revealed a face partially disfigured by scars, but his eyes were unmistakably those of the Eighth Prince, thought to have perished years ago. The Eighth Prince explained that he had not died in the great fire sixteen years ago; it was a gardener from his mansion who perished in his place.
He recounted receiving a rare golden nugget, which changed form when squeezed within a Glass Marble, from his ninth brother, the current Emperor, who stated it was a tribute. The Eighth Prince had given this peculiar item to the gardener just before an explosion erupted, engulfing his mansion in an inexplicable fire that claimed over thirty lives and left him disfigured. From that day, he had lived in hiding, swearing to uncover the truth.
He further revealed that he had used Princess Rui, who was close friends with Chu Xiuming's aunt, to send cryptic clues to Chu Xiuming through Shen Jin. The Eighth Prince expressed his profound sorrow at not knowing his youngest son, An'er, was still alive. Chu Xiuyuan then shared his fragmented memory of the day of the fire: his mother had frantically hidden him in a secret compartment in a wardrobe, promising to return.
But it was the current Emperor who eventually opened the compartment and quietly sent him to the Chu Family Army, where he was raised as Chu Xiuyuan. The Emperor had claimed this was to protect him from the true culprits.
This revelation prompted Chu Xiuming to suggest that the Emperor might not be the murderer, but was also secretly investigating the events of the Eighth Prince's Mansion, possibly linked to the army pay corruption case the Eighth Prince had been pursuing. Back in the imperial palace, the Emperor suddenly issued a new, harsh edict, accusing Chu Xiuming of selfishly rescuing the criminal Shen Jin and colluding with Lord Liu to plot rebellion.
The decree ordered Chu Xiuming's immediate arrest and execution if he resisted. Upon hearing this, Shen Jin felt a deep sense of betrayal. She confronted Chu Xiuming, lamenting his lack of trust, arguing that despite his efforts, her family was imprisoned, she was a fugitive, and their unborn child would face a life of constant hiding.
In despair, she returned the safety buckle to Chu Xiuming, who refused to take it back, telling her to smash it if she truly no longer wanted it. At Count Yongning's mansion, which had been sealed by imperial orders, Ruonan had managed to secure Meaty. Meaty urgently pleaded with Ruonan to take her to see Shen Jin, stating she had important private business that could not wait. Ruonan, cautious of the many watchful eyes, promised to arrange a meeting soon.
Chu Xiuming discussed the Emperor's new warrant with Chu Xiuyuan, noting that it contradicted their prior secret agreement. He explained that his "rebellion" and freeing Shen Jin had been a carefully orchestrated plan with the Emperor to lure out the true mastermind behind the army pay corruption. Since Lord Liu, a lower-level conspirator, had been exposed, yet the Emperor continued to pursue Chu Xiuming, it indicated a higher power was still at play.
The only remaining lead was the rare golden nugget in the Glass Marble that the Eighth Prince had mentioned, which the Emperor had received as a tribute. Chu Xiuming concluded that finding the original owner of this item might expose the true culprit. To pursue this, Chu Xiuming covertly entered the mansion of Prime Minister Lord Situ.
Lord Situ, initially terrified of harboring a wanted man, was swayed by a sense of obligation to his late "little sister," Chu Xiuming's aunt, before Chu Xiuming inquired about the mysterious golden nugget in a Glass Marble.
Episode 29 Recap
Chu Xiuming appeared before Lord Situ, who was visibly alarmed, questioning why Chu Xiuming, a wanted man, would come to his residence and what he was to do, fearing implication if he harbored him or betrayal if he captured him. Chu Xiuming sought information on a type of gold that could shift form when kept in a Glass Marble, and a major incident that occurred sixteen years prior.
Lord Situ feigned ignorance about both matters, repeatedly claiming he knew nothing and begging Chu Xiuming not to involve him further, fearing for his life. As Chu Xiuming prepared to leave, Lord Situ casually mentioned that the Head of Eunuch who oversaw procurement back then had retired and purchased a house in the capital to live out his old age, implying that the Eunuch might have information about such rare items. Chu Xiuming understood the hint and expressed his gratitude.
Chu Xiuming later discovered the Head of Eunuch had been captured, with house servants lying unconscious. He observed a group transporting an old man in a box to another courtyard. He identified the old man as Eunuch Shi and overheard the captors, led by Commander Yun, discussing their next steps, deciding to move Eunuch Shi again that night.
Chu Xiuming followed Commander Yun and his men until they reached the imperial palace, then stopped, hoping the emperor was not involved in this scheme. Later that night, Chu Xiuming covertly entered the small courtyard to rescue Eunuch Shi, only for an explosion to erupt, and imperial guards immediately surrounded the area. Chu Xiuming realized with surprise that it was as if they had been waiting for him.
Meanwhile, Meaty desperately pleaded with Ruonan to arrange a meeting with Shen Jin, emphasizing the critical nature of her secret, which she could not openly discuss. Upon seeing Shen Jin, Meaty stumbled, immediately expressing concern that she might have harmed the baby in her belly. Shen Jin and Ruonan were stunned, asking if she was pregnant and when this happened. Meaty confirmed her pregnancy, admitting Xiao Su was unaware.
Though furious, Shen Jin asked Chu Xiuyuan to find Xiao Su and expedite a wedding. Shen Jin meticulously helped Meaty prepare for the wedding, applying her makeup. She commented on Meaty's beautiful appearance, then felt a pang of sadness, wondering where Chu Xiuming was and how they could share life's journey if his whereabouts were unknown. Chu Xiuyuan brought a bewildered Xiao Su, along with Meaty's wedding gown.
Xiao Su felt the sudden marriage was disrespectful to Meaty as he hadn't even proposed. However, Chu Xiuyuan sternly informed him that he had offended the one person he must not offend and advised him to obey, or Shen Jin, who was still furious over his past actions, would ensure he understood his place. As Shen Jin, feeling like a mother giving away her daughter, gave Meaty heartfelt advice and blessings, Meaty quietly confessed that she might not be pregnant.
Shen Jin and Ruonan exchanged glances, realizing Meaty had tricked them into arranging the marriage. Despite this, the wedding commenced. Children held red candles as Xiao Su walked towards Meaty. Shen Jin wished them a lifetime of companionship and mutual protection, but her thoughts drifted to Chu Xiuming, her expression tinged with sadness. As sky lanterns soared and others celebrated, Shen Jin quietly retreated to her room.
The next morning, Chu Xiuming returned to the village, only to learn from his subordinate that Shen Jin had left a letter and gone to the palace to plead guilty. He was frustrated that she hadn't been stopped. Xiao Su reported that Shen Jin had not been seen entering the city gates, leading them to suspect she might have been kidnapped by the true mastermind.
Xiao Su then cautiously suggested that the emperor's recent deal with Chu Xiuming might have been a strategic trap, designed to eliminate traitors and weaken Chu Xiuming's military power simultaneously. Chu Xiuming declared his intention to enter the palace, believing Shen Jin must be in the emperor's hands. The Eighth Prince insisted on accompanying him, reasoning that his appearance would be beneficial regardless of the emperor's involvement in the plot.
Chu Xiuming forbade Chu Xiuyuan from joining them, despite Chu Xiuyuan's tearful plea, fearing his father would suffer the same fate as his mother and never return. The Eighth Prince reassured Chu Xiuyuan, telling him to live a happy life with Ruonan should anything happen to them. Unbeknownst to them, a spy watched from outside the courtyard walls. After ensuring Chu Xiuyuan's safety, the Eighth Prince and Chu Xiuming, disguised as gardeners delivering flowers, entered the imperial palace.
Meanwhile, Lord Situ presented a transparent sphere containing gold, the Glass Marble, to the emperor, claiming it was a rare treasure he had painstakingly found and that Chu Xiuming had once mentioned it. The emperor found the item strangely familiar. As Lord Situ took his leave, Chu Xiuming and the Eighth Prince were granted an audience. The emperor was visibly surprised to see his eighth brother after so many years, momentarily forgetting the Glass Marble in his hand.
However, the Eighth Prince instantly recognized it. Seizing the opportunity, Chu Xiuming snatched the Glass Marble and threw it, causing an explosion within the hall. Outside, Lord Situ was delighted, believing Chu Xiuming had assassinated the emperor, and immediately ordered his guards to investigate. Chu Xiuming emerged from the explosion, confronting Lord Situ, declaring the emperor dead to bait him and expose his facade. He then challenged Situ, stating that all the surrounding soldiers were seemingly in Situ's pay.
Chu Xiuming also suspected Shen Jin was in Situ's custody. Lord Situ, momentarily flustered, admitted he was forced into his actions, implicitly blaming Chu Xiuming's past pressure. He then ordered his soldiers to kill Chu Xiuming, but Chu Xiuming skillfully fended them off. At that moment, Xiao Su arrived with his own forces, surrounding Situ's rebellious troops. In a desperate attempt to deflect blame, Lord Situ accused Chu Xiuming and Xiao Su of treason.
To his utter shock, the emperor and the Eighth Prince then emerged from behind, revealing the trap. Lord Situ was aghast, demanding to know how they had arrived so quickly when he had deployed all palace guards. The emperor explained they had known about the surveillance and had set a deliberate trap to ensnare him.
Chu Xiuming then questioned Lord Situ, who confessed to meticulously manipulating Chu Xiuming into suspecting the emperor by creating a series of convenient coincidences, adding that Chu Xiuming was 'too slow' to uncover the truth without such obvious guidance.
The Eighth Prince then directly confronted Lord Situ, revealing that Situ was the one who had given him the Glass Marble years ago, which had caused the devastation to his family, thus exposing Situ as the true orchestrator of his family's tragedy. Chu Xiuming moved to kill Lord Situ, but Situ quickly countered by revealing that Shen Jin was in his custody and would die if he did. Situ refused to disclose her location.
Meanwhile, Shen Jin awoke in a cramped, dark space, surrounded by copper walls, with sand slowly pouring from a dragon's mouth in the ceiling, threatening to bury her. She desperately called out for help, pleading to be released and defiantly declared that her husband, Chu Xiuming, the Demon General, would surely come to save her and would never forgive her captors.
Episode 30 (Ending) Recap
As his servants were arrested, Chu Xiuming rushed to Lord Situ's mansion through the rain, frantically searching for Shen Jin. He questioned the soldiers, who confirmed they had found no one locked up. Chu Xiuming entered the study, finding nothing. Realizing the urgency, he and Xiao Su split up to search the rest of the mansion. Meanwhile, deep within Lord Situ's secret study, Shen Jin was partially submerged in quicksand, desperately trying to clear the sand from around herself.
She continuously whispered to her unborn child, assuring it that its father would find them and encouraging it not to give up, clinging to the hope of their survival. Chu Xiuming later confronted Lord Situ in prison, who appeared relaxed and unbothered by his incarceration. Lord Situ taunted Chu Xiuming, recalling that Shen Jin had come to the city gate to find him that day, implying Chu Xiuming was tricked into running around while she was abducted.
Xiao Su intervened, warning Chu Xiuming not to fall for Situ's provocations. He then threatened Lord Situ, vowing to take his entire family's lives if General's Lady was harmed. Lord Situ merely scoffed, reiterating that he was a villain and righteous gentlemen like them would never stoop to such acts. In a nearby cell, Prince Rui's Lady expressed concern upon hearing of Shen Jin's disappearance, though she affirmed her belief that Chu Xiuming would find her.
Side Concubine Chen also showed worry. However, Shen Zi cruelly remarked that Shen Jin deserved her fate, sarcastically questioning if the "Countess Yongning" was not "impeccable" or "all-powerful." Chu Xiuming angrily retorted that Shen Jin had returned to the capital to plead guilty and assume all blame to save the Prince Rui's family, which was why Lord Situ seized her. He questioned Shen Zi's maliciousness toward her own sister.
Prince Rui then urged Chu Xiuming not to waste time, pressing him to find Shen Jin quickly. Chu Xiuming surmised that Lord Situ would not have personally abducted Shen Jin from the city gate. Xiao Su rounded up several of Lord Situ's subordinates, pushing them toward the chopping block for interrogation. However, they all insisted they knew nothing of Shen Jin's whereabouts, even facing death.
Chu Xiuming then remembered Commander Yun, who might know something, but was told Commander Yun was away from the palace due to personal matters. By the time Chu Xiuming located Commander Yun's residence, the man was already dead. With no other leads, Chu Xiuming realized that Lord Situ was likely the only one who knew Shen Jin's location. Lord Situ ominously declared that Shen Jin would perish by nightfall, with only about an hour remaining until then.
Desperate, Chu Xiuming returned to the prison and knelt before Lord Situ, begging him to reveal Shen Jin's whereabouts. Lord Situ, nearing death and mentally unstable, delighted in Chu Xiuming's suffering. He refused to let Chu Xiuming die quickly, instead wanting him to live a lifetime of remorse and regret, knowing his woman would die in a dark, unknown hole, tortured by fear.
As Situ laughed maniacally, Chu Xiuming suddenly recalled Shen Jin's casual remark during their first visit to Lord Situ's mansion, when she playfully wondered if a certain floorboard in his study concealed a secret room. Lord Situ's stunned expression confirmed his suspicion. Chu Xiuming rushed back to Lord Situ's study, frantically searching for a mechanism. He eventually discovered a heavy four-ram-headed bronze wine vessel that served as the switch.
As he turned it, the floorboards beneath him opened, and he fell into the secret room, landing right in front of Shen Jin. The floorboards then closed above them, leaving Xiao Su in a panic as he tried in vain to find the switch from outside. Chu Xiuming assured Shen Jin that they would escape once Xiao Su found the mechanism, but Shen Jin worried if Xiao Su might fall in as well.
She urged Chu Xiuming to stop trying to dig them out, as it only made him sink deeper. Time, like the sand around them, continued to flow. Chu Xiuming grew despondent, realizing that not only had he failed to rescue Shen Jin, but he was now trapped alongside her. He began desperately scooping sand away from Shen Jin and towards himself. Shen Jin, heartbroken by his self-reproach, stopped him.
She asked if he remembered the three conditions she made him promise when she first married him. The first two were long fulfilled. For the third, she insisted that no matter the circumstances, they must always be together, even in death. Chu Xiuming's calm facade shattered, and he frantically dug at the sand, refusing to watch her die. Shen Jin tenderly stroked his face, comforting him like a child.
She reassured him that everything was not lost; they were together, and their child was with them too. Eventually, they were rescued from the collapsing pit. In the Golden Hall, the Emperor and the Eighth Prince playfully bickered over who should assume the throne. The Eighth Prince argued that the Emperor's governance was popular and that the Emperor had saved Chu Xiuyuan, his son.
The Emperor, in turn, listed his sixteen years of arduous rule and how he had diligently sought the person who harmed the Eighth Prince. Both tried to shirk the responsibility, with the Eighth Prince preferring to tend to his plants. Ultimately, the Emperor declared there was a more suitable candidate right before them: Chu Xiuyuan. He lauded Chu Xiuyuan as a righteous and upstanding man from the Shen family, capable of shouldering the responsibility of governing the nation.
Chu Xiuyuan, also known by his given name An'er, expressed reluctance, but the Emperor and Eighth Prince insisted, ultimately guiding him to the throne. At the Brocade Splendor shop, Shen Zi and Shen Jing argued over a new piece of fabric, prompting them to seek Shen Jin's judgment. Shen Jin gently mediated, suggesting that Shen Zi, as the older sister, should let Shen Jing have it this time, promising to reserve new fabric for both of them in the future.
Shen Zi still protested, asking Shen Jin, their "Big Sister," to side with her. Shen Jin playfully chided her younger sisters for bickering like children despite being married women, causing them all to laugh. The four daughters of Prince Rui's Mansion were now closer than ever. The Eighth Prince, now back to his preferred life as a gardener, spent his days tending flowers and plants in Ruonan's village.
The villagers spoke with pride of the current Emperor and Empress, particularly Empress Ruonan, who hailed from their village. They praised her for her benevolence, unifying various escort agencies across the land, which fostered prosperity and eliminated past rivalries. Children in the village recited new poems, depicting a harmonious world where everyone could enjoy themselves and seek peace. Back at the General's Mansion, Mammy Qingqiu brought out all of General's Lady's personal belongings.
Chu Xiuming and Shen Jin were preparing to move back to the frontier, the place where they had fallen in love and lived freely. Leopard Head, however, was distraught, protesting that this move meant his Xiao Cong would have to stay in the capital with the pregnant Meaty. He worried about the pain of separation from Xiao Cong and feared Xiao Cong might be tempted to stay in the bustling capital.
Meaty, hearing this, came out and jokingly agreed that Xiao Cong should stay with her, citing that Leopard Head had once suspected her of being a spy. She playfully declared that she would have more babies to ensure Xiao Cong stayed in the capital forever. The Emperor and Empress, Ruonan, arrived in casual attire to send them off.
Chu Xiuming urged the Emperor to revoke the decree, citing Shen Jin's advanced pregnancy and the arduous journey, suggesting she remain in the capital. Shen Jin, however, insisted on going. Empress Ruonan reassured her, highlighting that the General's Mansion had no concubines, implying Chu Xiuming would always be hers. Prince Rui's family also arrived.
Prince Rui stammered, unable to fully express his wishes, leaving Prince Rui's Lady to advise Shen Jin to be extremely careful during the long journey, given her pregnancy. Side Concubine Chen also offered her own trivial advice. Suddenly, Shen Jin gasped, realizing she might not make it back to the frontier after all. Her baby did not want her to leave; she was going into labor. The mansion erupted into chaos.
Chu Xiuming immediately scooped Shen Jin into his arms and carried her inside. People frantically called for the imperial doctor and midwives. Prince Rui swelled with pride, exclaiming that marrying Shen Jin to Chu Xiuming had been a truly wise decision, proving he wasn't as foolish as some thought. His wife quickly urged him to hurry and follow them inside.
Later, it was said that on the training grounds at the frontier, the Great General Chu Xiuming personally instructed a young boy. With a firm voice, he declared, "Men ought to be ambitious. Protecting the country is our mission!" The small figure below stood rigidly, repeating the motto in a tender, childish voice, "Men ought to be ambitious. Protecting the country is our mission!"
