Don't Leave After School Recap

Episode 1 Recap

The quiet halls of the teaching building were suddenly filled with commotion as the dismissal bell rang. Amidst the noise, a water pipe in the men's restroom burst, quickly flooding the area. This chaotic scene was the culmination of events that began three months prior. Fang Xue, having scored 399 on her college entrance exam—just one point shy of the Tier 3 university cutoff—was forced by her family to re-enroll for another year.

Entering Xiang Jiang Middle School as a re-enrolled student opened up a new world for her. She experienced many firsts, like being publicly criticized, vying for food in the cafeteria, and even learning that essential balm could be consumed by some of the more intense students. Meanwhile, Ms Lei, the director, was in her office discussing the re-enrolled class, Class 1, Senior 4, with a new acting teacher.

Ms Lei described the class as a collection of problematic students: Gu Shang, expelled for fighting; Chu Yanfen, an art student who "fools around every day"; Li Erbao, a "Xiang Jiang Living Fossil" re-enrolling for his fifth year; and Tang Tiantian, who excelled at everything but studying.

Ms Lei singled out Fang Xue, noting her abysmal score of 399 and her tendency to cause trouble since the term began, emphasizing that the new teacher needed to pay special attention to her. The acting teacher expressed her inexperience with re-enrolled students, but Ms Lei assured her that only patience was needed. The new acting teacher, clearly resentful of her assignment, took her frustration out on the students.

When Fang Xue forgot her exercise book, the teacher angrily sent her to retrieve it. On her way back, Fang Xue accidentally bumped into someone, causing her to fall into a puddle and dirty her shoe. While cleaning her shoe in the restroom, it accidentally dropped into the sewer. Her friend, Tiantian, discreetly brought sodium dithionite from a nearby chemistry lab, knowing it reacted violently with water, hoping it would dislodge the shoe.

However, the shoe remained, and Fang Xue inadvertently blew up the men's restroom downstairs, causing two floors to flood. This incident cemented her reputation as a notorious figure at school. In the aftermath, Ms Lei condemned Class 1, Senior 4, listing their various misbehaviors. To prevent further disruption to the Senior 3 classes, the school decided to relocate the re-enrolled students to a branch campus.

When the students visited the branch campus, they discovered it was a dilapidated building, sparking immediate outrage and division among them. Arguments escalated, with some students like Li Dalai blaming Fang Xue and insulting her family's funeral business. Fang Xue, feeling guilty, decided to take matters into her own hands and went to Ms Lei's office to plead on behalf of her classmates.

Around the same time, Wei Lai, a top student, dropped out of a prestigious university and came to Xiang Jiang Middle School to re-enroll. He specifically requested to be placed in Mr. Yin's class, the biology teacher, who taught Senior 3. During her meeting with Ms Lei, Fang Xue promised that her classmates would no longer cause trouble.

Ms Lei, skeptical of Fang Xue's ability to even guarantee herself, gave the class one last chance: they had to achieve an average score of 500 in the upcoming mock exam, a target nearly 10 points higher than their current average. Fang Xue’s classmates despaired, feeling it was an impossible feat.

Hearing about Wei Lai’s high academic standing and his new enrollment, Fang Xue and her friends saw an opportunity to boost their class average by persuading him to transfer to their Senior 4 class. Fang Xue tried to persuade Wei Lai to transfer to her class, first by offering him oranges. He politely refused, prompting some students to mock her for "chasing a boy." Undeterred, Fang Xue learned that Wei Lai had a passion for collecting insects.

With the unreliable help of her friend Gu Shang and others, she attempted to gather bugs for him. However, in her clumsiness, she accidentally broke one of his precious fossils while trying to present her collection. Wei Lai, annoyed, explicitly told her to stay away and refused her request to join her class, stating he couldn't help.

Back in her classroom, with the mock exam just days away and Wei Lai’s refusal, the students lost all hope and began packing their belongings, ready to accept their fate. Fang Xue, burdened by guilt, wandered off. On the playground, she witnessed Wei Lai and his friend being bullied by other students over a basketball court. The bullies taunted Wei Lai about dropping out of university, collecting "broken stones" and doing "dirty work."

Unable to stand by, Fang Xue intervened, throwing a basketball at the bullies, which led to her grandfather being called to Ms Lei's office. Ms Lei reprimanded Fang Xue, calling her a "gremlin" for the trouble she caused, suggesting she quit school and go home. Fang Xue's grandfather apologized to Ms Lei for his granddaughter's behavior. Afterward, Fang Xue and her grandfather sat on the steps outside.

Fang Xue tearfully confided that she no longer wanted to study, feeling stifled in the school despite her parents' good intentions. Her grandfather listened patiently, assuring her that he would support her decision, even if it meant confronting her father. He urged her to think carefully about her future if she quit. News of Fang Xue's intention to withdraw quickly spread.

Wei Lai received a call from a friend who relayed the news, also recounting the full story of the pipe incident—how Fang Xue was pushed into a puddle, lost her shoe, and used the chemicals in an attempt to retrieve it, inadvertently causing the explosion. Wei Lai appeared thoughtful and guilty upon hearing the detailed account. Later that evening, Fang Xue was alone, dejectedly painting over graffiti in the corridor, wanting to finish before her official withdrawal.

Yin Hao (Mr Yin), the biology teacher, approached her, questioning her decision to quit so soon after the semester began. He warned her that withdrawing would make it difficult to return, and that Ms Lei would likely give her a zero on the upcoming mock exam, further lowering her class's average score. Yin Hao emphasized that dropping out or re-enrolling were significant life choices that required careful consideration.

He advised her not to give up so easily and offered to paint the wall himself, urging her to go back and study to improve her score, even if by just one point. Inspired by his words, Fang Xue decided to stay. The next day, as the mock exam was about to begin, Fang Xue's classmates were still pessimistic, believing their situation was merely a "sideshow."

Suddenly, Wei Lai walked into Class 1, Senior 4, announcing that he had applied to transfer to their class. This unexpected arrival boosted everyone's morale, turning what they thought was a "sideshow" into the "main show." Fang Xue thanked Wei Lai, and he encouraged her to do well in the exams. Despite Wei Lai's transfer and everyone's efforts, the class's average score still fell short by less than 0. 5 points.

The students once again packed their belongings, resigned to moving to the branch campus. As their bus began to pull away, Fang Xue was talking to Wei Lai. He confessed that he was the one who accidentally pushed her into the puddle that led to the restroom incident, expressing his regret for not saying anything sooner. Just then, Yin Hao rode up on his bicycle and dramatically cut in front of the bus.

He announced that he had successfully petitioned the principal: the students would not have to move to the branch campus. He then introduced himself as Yin Hao, their new official class teacher.

Episode 2 Recap

During a class, a teacher used a video about the animal world to explain primary and secondary consumers. When Fang Xue asked for clarification, Gu Shang ridiculed her, calling her a "poor student" at the bottom of the food chain. Another student quickly spoke up in Fang Xue's defense, but Gu Shang continued his taunts. The teacher intervened, stopping the argument and ending the class.

He then informed the students that he would be away the following week to attend a workshop on graduates, and instructed them to send someone to collect their new school uniforms that afternoon. The news about the uniforms sparked excitement among the students, signifying their official membership in the school. That evening in the girls' dorm, while others studied, Tian Tian groaned from period pain, also fretting about getting a limited edition Mayday album.

Hearing this, Fang Xue enthusiastically showed Tian Tian her own Mayday poster, which she had secretly kept. As they discussed climbing the wall to buy the album, Aunt Zhao, the dorm supervisor, entered, confiscating their poster, album, and snacks. Fang Xue challenged her, asking why Cheng Jing's bed wasn't inspected. Aunt Zhao dismissed her, stating that Cheng Jing was a good, self-disciplined student, unlike "poor students" who required constant supervision.

The next day in chemistry class, Wei Lai's phone rang, interrupting the lecture. The teacher initially expressed annoyance, asking who was playing with their phone. Upon learning it was Wei Lai, his tone softened, and he permitted Wei Lai to step outside to answer the call. Soon after, Fang Xue raised her hand, requesting to use the restroom, but the teacher sarcastically dismissed her request, implying she was making excuses, and told her to hold it.

Outside, Wei Lai took a call from his mother, who informed him that she and his father were already at the university gate. Wei Lai made an excuse, claiming he was out and would return soon, then immediately called Yang Zhuofan for help, explaining they had a problem. After school, Fang Xue arrived at the school gate, ready to climb over the wall. She unexpectedly encountered Wei Lai, also preparing to skip school.

Believing a "good student" like him wouldn't know how to scale the wall, Fang Xue offered to demonstrate. While Wei Lai easily scaled the wall, Fang Xue's clothes got caught, leaving her suspended. She frantically called out to Wei Lai for help, but he simply left, seemingly ignoring her pleas. Fang Xue was subsequently discovered by the security guard. Wei Lai arrived at the restaurant where his parents were waiting, discreetly stashing his school uniform and backpack before joining them.

At the table, Wei Lai's father questioned his absence from home, which Wei Lai had attributed to "researching at the university." Yang Zhuofan, who was also present, quickly intervened, explaining that he and Wei Lai were doing "private work" for a teacher that couldn't be openly discussed. Though still suspicious, Wei Lai's mother intervened, prompting his father to drop the subject and urge them to eat. Back at school, Ms. Lei sternly reprimanded Fang Xue for skipping class.

She ordered Fang Xue to write a 5000-word self-criticism text and read it publicly at the flag-raising ceremony the following Monday. Fang Xue tried to negotiate, but Ms. Lei was unyielding, warning that the school would become a "circus" if students continued to misbehave. As Fang Xue prepared to leave, Ms. Lei stopped her, demanding to know the identity of the male student who had skipped with her.

Fang Xue claimed not to know him, but just then, a security guard entered and informed Ms. Lei that the other student was Wei Lai from Class 1, Senior 4. Wei Lai was summoned to Ms. Lei's office immediately upon returning to class. Ms. Lei, acknowledging his status as a good student but recognizing the bad influence of his actions, assigned him a 500-word self-criticism.

Fang Xue, passing by the office, overheard this, and later confronted Wei Lai, complaining about the blatant unfairness of their punishments. Wei Lai simply smiled and walked away. That night, Fang Xue's roommates discussed her incident with Wei Lai, noting the "inexplicable relation" between them. Meanwhile, in the boys' dorm, students chatted about their favorite dog breeds. Er Bao, offering to write Wei Lai's self-criticism text, asked what had happened between him and Fang Xue during their skipped class.

Wei Lai shrugged it off as "bad luck." The next morning, Fang Xue and her roommates discovered they had been criticized for chatting after lights-out, but Cheng Jing's name was notably absent from the notice. At lunch, Fang Xue's roommates continued their passive-aggressive remarks about Cheng Jing's favored treatment, causing Cheng Jing to become upset and leave.

Gu Shang followed her, attempting to talk about her apparent distress and her mother's visits, but Cheng Jing brushed him off, stating she had nothing to discuss and that he bothered her more now than two years ago. Later in Chinese class, the teacher caught Er Bao writing Wei Lai's self-criticism text. The teacher mocked Er Bao, listing various instances where he had used templates for tardiness and cheating, and now for skipping.

After class, Fang Xue confronted Wei Lai, accusing him of being "mean" for making someone else write his 500-word self-criticism. Wei Lai insisted Er Bao had offered to write it, but Fang Xue refused to believe him, criticizing him for doing nothing when Er Bao was scolded. As Wei Lai tried to leave, Fang Xue grabbed him, preventing him from walking away. She slipped, and they both tumbled down the stairs.

Wei Lai instinctively protected Fang Xue's head as they fell. After a brief gaze, Wei Lai stood up and limped away. Outside the school, Yang Zhuofan handed Wei Lai a file bag and advised him to resolve the issue of keeping his re-enrollment a secret from his parents, warning of potential trouble if the school contacted them. Wei Lai assured him he had it under control.

In the school building, Fang Xue confronted Ms. Lei, questioning why Wei Lai was allowed to have someone else write his self-criticism. Ms. Lei informed her that only Fang Xue would have to read her self-criticism publicly, clarifying that Wei Lai's actions were "necessary" while Fang Xue's were "trouble-making." Fang Xue was devastated by the perceived injustice.

Later, back in his dorm, Wei Lai opened the bag Yang Zhuofan had given him, surprised to find an inappropriate book titled "Angle's Secrets" tucked inside. He quickly tried to hide it, but a roommate entered and playfully teased him about reading a "blue book." The next morning during cleanup, Fang Xue found the book on the floor, which had fallen from Wei Lai's bag. Li Dalai witnessed this.

Later, Li Dalai started calling Fang Xue "horngry," claiming she looked innocent but was "horny and hungry." Other students joined in the taunting. Gu Shang, angered by Li Dalai's insults, confronted him, leading to a physical altercation. The three students—Fang Xue, Li Dalai, and Gu Shang—were called to Ms. Lei's office. Li Dalai, feeling triumphant, sought out Wei Lai to boast about getting Fang Xue into trouble.

Wei Lai, realizing the misunderstanding, immediately went to Ms. Lei to clarify the situation, admitting the book was his friend's and had been mistakenly placed in his bag. Ms. Lei then released Fang Xue and Gu Shang. Later, in the girls' dorm, the dorm supervisor, Aunt Zhao, conducted a room inspection.

She confiscated snacks from Tian Tian and other roommates, once again citing the difference between "good" and "bad" students, implying Cheng Jing's belongings were not subject to the same scrutiny. Meanwhile, Wei Lai returned to the classroom and found Fang Xue still diligently writing her self-criticism. They had a brief conversation where Fang Xue expressed her continued frustration with the school's perceived unfairness, especially in how students were judged based on academic performance.

Wei Lai acknowledged that unfairness was common but asserted that it didn't equate to correctness, suggesting that some battles had to be fought for oneself. Subsequently, Fang Xue delivered her 5000-word self-criticism publicly at the school assembly. However, she used the platform not just to apologize but to boldly denounce the school's unfair practices.

She directly called out the disparities: her 5000-word self-criticism versus Wei Lai's 500, the selective dorm inspections, and the automatic labeling of "good students" as always right and "bad students" as always wrong in conflicts. She concluded by urging the school to re-evaluate its approach to fairness. Following this, Mr. Yin, who had returned from a business trip, rearranged the classroom seating. He observed that the previous arrangement, based on mock exam scores, created cliques and divisions.

He dramatically shifted all students in diagonal patterns, declaring that under his guidance, there would be no class distinctions, no small groups, no factions, and no "good" or "bad" students; he would treat everyone equally. Fang Xue, who was assigned sweeping duties as part of her punishment, later stumbled upon a crucial piece of information. While disposing of trash, she incidentally saw surveillance footage in the security office from the day she was caught climbing the wall.

The footage showed Wei Lai moving a ladder, revealing he had not abandoned her as she previously thought, but had gone to get help. Realizing her mistake, Fang Xue later confronted Wei Lai in class, expressing her regret for her earlier accusations. Wei Lai reiterated that he had tried to tell her at the time, but she hadn't listened. As an apology, Fang Xue offered him a bag of oranges.

Just then, her panicked roommate rushed into the classroom, revealing that she had overheard teachers discussing a serious matter: students with the lowest scores in the upcoming test results would be dismissed from school.

Episode 3 Recap

Qiao Mai, a student from the senior class, purchased an exam paper from the guy in the printing room, unaware that this seemingly secret transaction was being recorded. On her way back, the person filming confronted her, revealing they had a video of her colluding with the printing room attendant. The individual threatened Qiao Mai, making it clear they now had leverage over her.

Meanwhile, Er Bao was entertaining Fang Xue and some other classmates with a tale about a divine tree. He recounted how a student, after praying under the tree, found a fallen branch, picked it up, and then collapsed in fear upon looking up. The story spooked the listeners, but Gu Shang took it seriously. That evening, filled with anticipation, Gu Shang dragged Fang Xue to find the divine tree and pray. Fang Xue reluctantly humored him.

As they stood by the tree, a branch suddenly fell, just as in Er Bao's story. Gu Shang was ecstatic, believing it was a sign from the divine tree, and felt a surge of confidence for his upcoming exams. Fang Xue, however, dismissed it as merely a strong breeze. The next morning, as Fang Xue and Gu Shang walked to school, they overheard students from Senior Year 3 Class 1 discussing a full set of key points for an exam.

Gu Shang managed to obtain a copy through his connections, initially for Cheng Jing. Later that night, Fang Xue accompanied him to the printing room to print the key points. While operating the machine, Gu Shang accidentally discovered the actual General Science exam paper tucked underneath. After a moment of internal conflict, Gu Shang impulsively decided to steal the paper. He grabbed Fang Xue, and they sprinted away.

On their hurried escape, they briefly encountered Qiao Mai, who claimed she was going to the water room to get a kettle. Gu Shang and Fang Xue, preoccupied, did not notice anything unusual about her. Gu Shang then revealed the stolen exam paper to a surprised Fang Xue.

Despite Fang Xue's initial reluctance due to strict school rules and fears of expulsion, Gu Shang convinced her that this was their only chance to avoid having their parents called or being expelled. They decided to keep the paper, but their clandestine exchange was observed by Li Dalai from a hidden corner. Later, in the library, Fang Xue and Gu Shang huddled to discuss the exam paper. As both were struggling students, they found themselves unable to solve the problems.

Gu Shang then hatched a plan to trick Wei Lai, an excellent student, into helping them by asking him to tutor them. Wei Lai initially resisted. Gu Shang, knowing Wei Lai preferred the lower bunk, offered to switch bunk beds, letting Wei Lai have the lower bunk in exchange for tutoring Fang Xue. Wei Lai still hesitated but was eventually persuaded when Gu Shang playfully accused him of having ulterior motives if he refused.

Wei Lai began tutoring Fang Xue, who struggled to keep up due to her weak foundation. Seeing her biting her pen in frustration, Wei Lai became annoyed and stood up to leave. Fang Xue quickly apologized, admitting her slowness and pleading with him to be patient. After further explanations, Fang Xue appeared to grasp the concepts and obtained the answers to the exam paper, though Gu Shang privately commented on her "acting."

On the day of the exam, Wei Lai arrived early. When the General Science exam papers were distributed, he realized the questions were identical to the stolen paper. He immediately requested to switch to an alternative version, stating that he knew all the questions on the current paper. Fang Xue also requested to switch, but the teacher refused, telling them it was an exam room, not a market.

A teacher discovered cheat sheets on Fang Xue and Gu Shang during the exam. Following this report, Ms Lei confronted them, leading to their parents being called to school. In the office, Ms Lei informed their parents that the students would be expelled. Gu Shang's father, enraged, hit his son before storming out. Gu Shang, fuming, returned to the dorm to pack his belongings. When Wei Lai entered, Gu Shang, suspecting him of informing, initiated a fight.

Ms Lei arrived and intervened, threatening to call the police if the chaos continued. Wei Lai suggested that Gu Shang might have beaten the wrong person. Fang Xue, hearing about the fight, brought ice packs for Wei Lai to soothe his bruises, leading to a subtle shift in their relationship. She apologized for their misunderstanding, to which Wei Lai questioned why she allowed herself to be misunderstood.

Fang Xue also had several ice lollies herself, believing she would be expelled and spending her remaining tuition money. Wei Lai then shared the "37-percent rule" with Fang Xue, advising her not to give up too soon and to be brave in her attempts, especially since she hadn't reached a critical point in her decision-making. Meanwhile, Mr Yin approached Ms Lei, pleading for Fang Xue and Gu Shang.

He argued that rules shouldn't be inflexible, using the analogy of treating a leg rather than amputating it. He vouched for the students, proposing that they be allowed to participate in the upcoming weekly exam to demonstrate their progress, offering to take any punishment if they failed. Ms Lei acknowledged that the final decision rested with the principal, who was currently on a business trip.

She agreed to let them take the weekly exam, with the ultimate decision regarding their expulsion to be made upon the principal's return. Before the new weekly exam, Li Dalai verbally provoked Gu Shang, telling him that "it's normal for someone with a record like you to be suspected" and that "what is done in the dark will come to light."

He also complained to a fellow student about Fang Xue and Gu Shang creating a poor study environment in the class, arguing that their disruption impacted serious students like himself. When the teacher also sided with Li Dalai, a defiant Gu Shang and Fang Xue took their chairs outside to the scorching hot playground to take their exam, determined to prove they wouldn't cheat.

Their resolute act even impressed the teachers who came to check on them, with the principal, upon hearing of their efforts, deciding to give Fang Xue and Gu Shang another chance. During the strenuous outdoor exam, Fang Xue fainted from heatstroke. Wei Lai carried her to the infirmary and watched over her. As he watched over her, their feelings for each other deepened, but a sudden entry by the infirmary teacher caused them to quickly separate.

Fang Xue soon learned that the principal, moved by her determination and her high score of 197 in the General Science exam, had intervened on their behalf, meaning she would not be expelled. Fang Xue expressed her relief and humorously regretted eating too many ice lollies, attributing her stomachache to them. When she noticed Wei Lai also drinking, she asked why, and he admitted he also got sunstroke while taking the exam outside. The infirmary teacher then entered, playfully asking if they were engaged in "Puppy love."

Episode 4 Recap

Fang Xue was dreaming of filming a commercial with Wei Lai, where he told her she was his "milk tea" and he could hold her in the palm of his hand. When she woke up, confused, her roommates were gathered around her bed, teasing her about dreaming of Wei Lai and their supposedly "flirty" encounter in the infirmary. Fang Xue, annoyed, told them they were crazy and to get out of her bed as it was time for morning exercise.

During the morning exercise, students complained about their class lacking a leader and being a temporary group. Wei Lai and Fang Xue ran and chatted, with Wei Lai teasingly correcting Fang Xue's pronunciation of English words like "beach" versus "bitch." However, Wei Lai unexpectedly tripped and fell, causing a chain reaction as students behind him couldn't stop, leading to a minor stampede. Ms. Lei summoned Mr. Yin to inquire about the stampede, expressing her frustration with their class's disorganization.

She instructed him to promptly elect a class monitor, emphasizing that he couldn't manage everything alone. Additionally, she informed him that a representative from their class needed to draw lots for an upcoming satellite video class that afternoon. After class, Mr. Yin proposed electing a class monitor, stating that despite their re-enrolled status, self-discipline wasn't working. He even offered an enticing reward: a week of rich meals in the staff canteen for the chosen monitor. However, the students remained uninterested.

When Mr. Yin tried to appoint Wei Lai, Li Dalai, and Wei Laixing, they all declined. Finally, Fang Xue volunteered herself, earning support from Gu Shang, who called her righteous. Later, Fang Xue expressed her reservations to Mr. Yin, questioning his trust in her as a "troublemaker." Mr. Yin reassured her, saying he had never misjudged a person and believed she was capable.

He then instructed her to go to Ms. Lei's office before the night self-study session to draw lots for their class's satellite video course, assuring her she wasn't unlucky enough to win. Despite Mr. Yin's assurance, Fang Xue proved to be unlucky and drew the lot for their class to record the satellite video course. The students immediately complained, frustrated about the potential time waste.

Li Dalai seized the opportunity to mock Fang Xue, suggesting her family's funeral business brought bad luck, which angered Gu Shang. The two nearly came to blows before being stopped. Later, Fang Xue confided in Cheng Jing, wondering if she was truly unlucky to have been chosen. Cheng Jing dismissed Li Dalai's comments, telling Fang Xue to ignore him.

After the night self-study session, while washing up with Cheng Jing, Fang Xue noticed Cheng Jing's dirty cuffs, which were difficult to clean. This sparked an idea in Fang Xue to provide cuffs for everyone. She immediately called home, asking her mother if she still knew how to sew. The next day, her grandfather delivered a package of custom-made cuffs, explaining that Fang Xue's mother had picked out patterns she thought the students would like.

He also offered his unwavering support as Fang Xue navigated her new role as class monitor. Fang Xue distributed the cuffs to her classmates, explaining they would help keep sleeves clean and make washing easier. However, most students found them "corny" and rejected them. Only one student initially expressed interest, while others scoffed. Wei Lai then approached Fang Xue, stating that he wanted one, explaining that he was concerned about staining his sleeve with red pen.

Ultimately, Wei Lai and Fang Xue became the only two students in the class wearing the cuffs. Mr. Yin then entered the classroom, scolding them for being too noisy and reminding them of their re-enrolled year, instructing them to take out their test papers. The next day, the re-enrolled class began recording their satellite video course, as instructed by Mr. Yin, who urged them to stay spirited despite the heat.

The recording session was long and arduous, leaving the students hot, sweaty, and famished. By the time they finished, the cafeteria was closed, and they were given meal replacements for lunch, which many students grumbled about, questioning their cleanliness. As students discussed whether they could shower despite it not being their designated time, Fang Xue, as class monitor, had to leave abruptly for a meeting with Ms. Lei, telling her friends she would wait for them later.

Fang Xue and Cheng Jing headed to the bathhouse, expecting Fiona to have secured spots for them. Instead, they found Fiona being confronted by Senior 3 students, who were accusing her of trying to shower out of turn. Fang Xue tried to intervene, explaining their predicament of having just finished recording the hot video course and missing their designated shower time.

She appealed to the Senior 3 monitor for an exception, but her request was rejected, with the monitor citing school regulations and refusing to budge. The Senior 3 students told Fang Xue and her friends to "take a hike." Unable to shower and still feeling the oppressive heat, Fang Xue decided to buy green bean ice drinks for her classmates. At the kiosk, she discovered she was 20 yuan short for 40 drinks, as the price had increased.

The shopkeeper refused to offer credit. Just then, Wei Lai appeared and offered to pay the remaining amount. Fang Xue thanked him, promising to repay him the next day. Wei Lai clarified that he wasn't buying them just for himself, implying he was helping Fang Xue get enough for the whole class. Shortly after consuming the new green bean ice drinks, many students, including Wei Lai, suffered from food poisoning, experiencing constant vomiting.

Fang Xue, who had given her drink to someone else, was accused by her classmates, especially Li Dalai, of poisoning the drinks in retaliation for the rejected cuffs. Amidst the chaos and accusations, Wei Lai collapsed and was rushed to the infirmary. There, a Senior 3 girl arrived to give him another green bean ice drink and express her concern, but the infirmary teacher quickly shooed her away.

Wei Lai learned from the girl that other classes had also consumed the same ice drinks without any ill effects, leading him to suspect the meal replacement was the true cause of the food poisoning. Back in the classroom, the students continued to interrogate Fang Xue, forcefully demanding she drink the remaining green bean ice drink to prove her innocence, accusing her of being "ashamed" if she refused.

Just then, Wei Lai arrived, having left the infirmary after hearing from Cheng Jing about the ongoing chaos. He immediately intervened, telling everyone that Fang Xue was not to blame. He explained that students in other classes had consumed the green bean ice drinks without issue, leading him to conclude that the meal replacement was the actual cause of the food poisoning. Relieved but overwhelmed with emotion, a tearful Fang Xue climbed onto a desk and cried.

The next day, Er Bao was delighted to be on duty with Fiona. They chatted intermittently, with Er Bao asking Fiona about her English name and then asking for one himself. Fiona suggested he transliterate "Er Bao" into "Two Baby," but then told him to just use "Baby." Later, Mr. Yin convened a class meeting. He apologized on behalf of the school for the mass diarrhea incident, admitting the cafeteria's negligence and his own responsibility as class teacher.

He then singled out Li Dalai, criticizing his unkind behavior towards classmates, particularly Fang Xue, asking why he didn't volunteer to be monitor if he thought he could do better. Mr. Yin emphasized the importance of trust and contribution, warning that selfishness would lead to a lack of respect, regardless of academic achievement. He urged the students to see themselves as a collective, even for their single year together, and to avoid isolating themselves.

The students, feeling ashamed, lowered their heads in silent acknowledgment of their wrongdoings. That evening, after Fang Xue confirmed to Wei Lai that she would continue as class monitor despite the challenges, Wei Lai informed her that their recently recorded video lesson would be broadcast on the education channel at 8 PM. Fang Xue doubted anyone would watch it. However, later, students gathered excitedly around the television, with some sharing that their former classmates had already seen them.

As they watched themselves on screen, some commented on their appearance, while others expressed amusement, finding the experience enjoyable despite how tiring the recording had been. When Wei Lai appeared on screen, answering a question correctly, his classmates praised his handsome looks. Shortly after, Mr. Yin called Fang Xue out of the classroom, asking her about her recent closeness with Wei Lai.

Episode 5 Recap

Mr. Yin had a private conversation with Fang Xue, observing that she and Wei Lai had become quite close. He expressed his approval, believing that interactions between students of different academic levels would foster a better learning atmosphere in the class. He then informed Fang Xue about a new policy to be announced at a class meeting the following day and asked her to notify the other students.

Later, Fang Xue distributed a document titled "Big Bet" for her classmates to sign. This was related to Mr. Yin's new initiative, the "Project Doraemon." At the class meeting, Mr. Yin unveiled the policy, explaining that the class's average scores had consistently ranked last in the grade. To improve the situation, he decided to pair students into study groups. The first group to collectively achieve 1100 points would have one reasonable wish granted.

When students inquired about the pairing method, Mr. Yin stated that based on the last two test results, the top-ranked student would be paired with the lowest-ranked, and so on, with partners becoming desk-mates. Some good-performing students protested, arguing it was unfair for them to tutor underachievers. Mr. Yin countered that it served as both pressure and motivation, potentially unlocking everyone's potential. As the "Project Doraemon" began, the academic disparities quickly became apparent; some struggling students snacked or copied homework.

However, Fang Xue and Wei Lai formed an unexpectedly harmonious pair. Wei Lai revealed his wish: an invitation to the 7th Forum of Biological Research, an exclusive workshop that Mr. Yin could help him attend, featuring a Purussaurus fossil. He emphasized it was a rare opportunity. Wei Lai then arranged to meet Fang Xue at the library the next day at 12:30 PM for a study session.

The next day, Fang Xue arrived late to the library, having barely finished her meal. Wei Lai chided her for her tardiness, suggesting she needed more time given her weak academic foundation. He began explaining a math problem, but Fang Xue's fidgety nature interrupted him. She admitted to guessing answers on tests, prompting Wei Lai to warn her about failure.

Fang Xue then told Wei Lai that Mr. Yin had instructed them to go together to buy learning materials that afternoon. Wei Lai readily agreed. Later that afternoon, at the bookstore, Fang Xue covertly watched Wei Lai browse books. Wei Lai noticed her, and their eyes met. While waiting for the bus, Fang Xue teased Wei Lai for his "childlike enthusiasm" for a biology atlas he had purchased.

Wei Lai showed her illustrations of creatures like Anomalocaris and Ichthyostega, describing their characteristics. Fang Xue playfully likened Ichthyostega, which could only move short distances, to Wei Lai repeating a year of school. Suddenly, Wei Lai pulled Fang Xue closer, just as his parents passed by. In front of them, Wei Lai lied, claiming he had returned to be with his "girlfriend," Fang Xue, fearing their disapproval.

When his father questioned his graduation status, Wei Lai said Fang Xue was his high school classmate repeating a year, and their matching school uniforms were "lover's clothes." Fang Xue quickly clarified that Wei Lai was merely pursuing her, and they weren't officially dating. Wei Lai's father allowed them to leave. As they walked home, Fang Xue thanked Wei Lai for covering for her and asked if he intended to keep his secret from his parents. He confirmed his intention.

Fang Xue expressed admiration, saying she couldn't keep a secret for more than three days, but assured him she could keep his. Just then, Wei Lai's stepmother appeared, having overheard their conversation. She gently questioned Wei Lai about not being open with his father. She then gave him money for living expenses, insisting it was from her, urging him not to be thrifty.

She promised to keep his secret from his father and handle any school matters he couldn't discuss with him. Back at school, rumors of Wei Lai and Fang Xue dating had spread. Wei Lai ignored them, which irritated Fang Xue. After night self-study, Wang Mei, an admirer of Wei Lai from another class, confronted him, asking about his relationship with Fang Xue and disparaging Fang Xue as a "troublemaker" and her family background. Wei Lai simply walked away.

Later, Wang Mei found Fang Xue in the restroom and splashed water on her, leading to a physical altercation that was broken up by Gu Shang. Wei Lai, who had been waiting for Fang Xue in the library, returned to class. He offered Fang Xue notes he had copied from the library, as the original materials couldn't be borrowed.

Fang Xue, still upset by the incident with Wang Mei, coldly rejected them, stating she wanted to maintain a distance to avoid further trouble. Wei Lai accused her of making excuses to avoid studying and implied her friends were "a bunch of losers." Fang Xue defended Gu Shang, reminding Wei Lai that he couldn't achieve his 1100-point goal without the "underachievers."

Their argument escalated, and Fang Xue, determined to prove herself, declared she could improve her score by 50 points on her own. She proposed a new bet: the loser would apologize to the other in front of the whole class. Wei Lai accepted. On the fourth day of Project Doraemon, during mealtime, students gossiped about Fang Xue and Wei Lai, with Li Dalai also expressing his opinions.

Er Bao, claiming expertise from a "love master" deskmate during his previous year of study, offered theories on a girl's signs of affection. He suggested constant squabbling with a boy was a bid for attention. Other signs included sudden attention to appearance, seeking physical closeness (like indirectly kissing by sharing drinks), and playing hard to get. These observations made Wei Lai reflect on Fang Xue's recent behavior, such as her decision to change her cleaning duty to avoid him.

Wei Lai, troubled by the implications, later messaged Fang Xue to meet behind the teaching building. There, he bluntly told her that he had returned to school to calmly pursue his studies and did not want to develop any romantic relationships. He implied that if her bet was a ploy to win him over, it was futile. Fang Xue, taken aback, laughed mockingly and told him to stop his "crazy" thinking, making it clear she couldn't possibly like him.

That night, Fang Xue's roommates woke her from where she had fallen asleep on a chair with books. Despite their concerns, she vowed to pass her upcoming test. The next morning, Fang Xue noticed a poster for a "potential-encouraging" training class. Intrigued, she approached Gu Shang, who lent her 800 yuan for what she claimed were "learning materials," offering the full amount himself when she mentioned trying to get the rest from Cheng Jing.

Gu Shang also reminded her of the bet, saying he didn't want to lose and end up doing her laundry. Fang Xue promised to give it her all. Fang Xue attended the "potential-encouraging" class. During the introductory session, the staff assured her that the 800 yuan would be refunded upon course completion, and that the class could indeed boost her academic performance.

However, as the session progressed, with students performing odd physical exercises and a child admitting to peeking under an eye patch to "sense" colors, Fang Xue grew suspicious. During the "graduation ceremony," where crying was a requirement for "completion," Fang Xue learned that the "refund" would be in the form of vouchers, not cash. She confronted the staff, accusing them of fraud and demanding to see their business license.

The manager vaguely referred to "quantum entanglement" and "the quadratic nature of light waves" as scientific bases, but couldn't elaborate, confirming Fang Xue's suspicions. Soon after, the police raided the establishment and arrested the scammers. The school announced the scam over the public address system, identifying "Surnamed Fang" from Senior 4 as one of the victims and warning other students to be wary of such fraudulent schemes.

Classmates openly mocked Fang Xue for her gullibility, suggesting she was desperate to win Wei Lai's affection through any means. Fang Xue insisted she was a victim. Later that evening, Wei Lai approached Fang Xue, suggesting they abandon their bet. Fang Xue, however, refused, stating that too many classmates had placed their own bets on the outcome, and she was determined to find a way to win.

Back in her dorm, her roommate Cheng Jing offered her candid advice, acknowledging Fang Xue's humiliation but emphasizing that success was the only way to prove herself. Cheng Jing reminded her that for students from their backgrounds, College Entrance Examination was the fairest opportunity, and she should act like an adult, regardless of the bet with Wei Lai. Fang Xue thanked Cheng Jing the next morning. Fang Xue began studying diligently.

Wei Lai, observing her struggles, secretly prepared detailed notes for her and left them where she could find them. Fang Xue, unaware of their true source, mistakenly believed Cheng Jing was providing the help. When the exam results were announced, Fang Xue had won the bet. Celebrating with Cheng Jing, she thanked her for the notes, only for Cheng Jing to reveal that the handwriting was not hers. Fang Xue then realized the true source of the helpful notes.

In the classroom, classmates surrounded Wei Lai, demanding he apologize for losing the bet. Fang Xue rushed in, telling everyone to drop the apology. However, her classmates insisted, saying it was a rare chance for them to "win him." Fang Xue conceded, but reminded Wei Lai that he still had to do the laundry as agreed upon in the larger class bet.

Wei Lai, confused about the laundry, was interrupted by the class bell, and the other students playfully reiterated that he needed to do the laundry. After class, Fang Xue privately thanked Wei Lai for the notes, and he simply replied, "No problem."

Episode 6 Recap

The school's news media conducted interviews, which began with questions for Cheng Jing about why she missed her English exam last year, reportedly due to her mother oversleeping. Cheng Jing briefly stated she had "no feelings" about it and did not hate her mother. The interviewer, noting Cheng Jing had no interesting stories, then turned to Wei Lai, asking him about his decision to drop out of a prestigious university's finance program to pursue paleontology, a much less popular field.

Wei Lai initially claimed it was "for better self-actualization," but when pressed for more details, he simply refused to answer, bringing his interview to an awkward end. After biology class, Mr. Yin announced that the school's advanced class would start this week, meeting on Thursday and Friday evenings. He explained that students were selected based on their comprehensive scores from recent exams.

On the bulletin board where the class list was posted, a student who had previously photographed Qiaomai approached her, teasingly suggesting their shared placement might be "quantum entanglement." Qiaomai, however, tried to avoid him. He pressed her about why she was avoiding him and asked about his laundry, which she confirmed she had washed but was not yet dry. He then admitted he liked the way she did his laundry. Qiaomai watched him leave with a resentful expression.

During the evening self-study session, Fang Xue led the class in new eye exercises, encouraging everyone to follow along despite some students' reluctance. Mr. Yin then arrived, looking for Wei Lai. Fang Xue informed him that Wei Lai was on cleaning duty. Mr. Yin asked Fang Xue to retrieve his lesson plans from the multimedia classroom as he had a meeting. Alone in the multimedia classroom, Wei Lai meticulously cleaned a trophy in a display case.

He then became lost in a vivid fantasy, imagining himself on stage accepting a "lifetime achievement award" from the S&T Association for his contributions to paleontology. In his daydream, he thanked his mother for her unwavering support, his team, and his family, expressing optimism for the future of the paleontology industry. Unbeknownst to Wei Lai, Fang Xue was in the control room, observing his private moment on the security monitor.

Accidentally, she broadcast his entire imaginary award ceremony to the classroom. The quiet self-study session erupted into laughter and teasing, with students mocking Wei Lai's "Oscar-worthy acting." When Wei Lai returned, classmates questioned if he had been set up, but he awkwardly dismissed it as an acting rehearsal. The teasing, however, continued, with students making light of his paleontology aspirations.

After the night self-study session, Fang Xue sought out Wei Lai to apologize, claiming she had accidentally pressed the wrong button. Wei Lai, upset, accused her of doing it on purpose, frustrated by the widespread gossip. Fang Xue tried to comfort him, suggesting that gossip eventually fades and that he looked "cute" in the video, urging him not to take it to heart. However, Wei Lai did not accept her apology.

The next day, the incident gained even wider circulation when a notice titled "Dropped out of key university for better self-actualization" was posted on the bulletin board with Wei Lai's picture, intensifying the mockery and causing Wei Lai to angrily tell students to mind their words. Wei Lai then received the latest College Entrance Examination Score Manual, which revealed a new policy: an 'A' grade or higher in chemistry was now required for paleontology majors.

This sudden change deeply concerned Wei Lai, whose overall science score was usually bolstered by physics and biology, with chemistry being a weak point. He called his friend, Yang Zhuofan, to inquire about the specific score needed for an 'A' in chemistry, expressing his anxiety about the new requirement. Yang Zhuofan promised to help and mentioned he would be returning to school next week to give a speech as an outstanding graduate, at Ms Lei's request.

Meanwhile, Fang Xue observed Wei Lai talking on the phone from a distance, but chose not to approach him. During another night self-study session, after Wei Lai left, students resumed gossiping about him. Fang Xue intervened, telling them to stop laughing and let the matter go.

On his way to the advanced class, Li Dalai caught up with Wei Lai, informing him that while an 'A' in chemistry was needed, admissions would still be ranked by overall score, making the competition fierce. Wei Lai expressed his concern about the complex requirements as they entered the class together. Inside the advanced class, students showed excessive curiosity about Wei Lai, openly questioning his choice of paleontology and teasing him about his interest in dinosaurs, making him uncomfortable.

Li Dalai, noticing Wei Lai's discomfort, told everyone to quiet down as the teacher was coming. Mr. Zhou, the chemistry teacher, then entered, introduced himself, and polled the class to identify students from Grade 3 key classes, general classes, and Grade 4. After the advanced class, Gu Shang and Fang Xue chatted. Nearby, other students gossiped about the re-enrolled students, particularly Cheng Jing, whom they derogatorily called "sleeping beauty who missed the English exam."

One student even called Cheng Jing and her mother "idiots." Gu Shang, angered by this, warned the student not to speak about Cheng Jing again. Fang Xue intervened, pulling Gu Shang away. Subsequently, another student commented to Fang Xue that she and Gu Shang seemed to have known each other for a long time. Fang Xue asked how they knew, to which Gu Shang, interjecting, replied he "could feel it."

Fang Xue then noted that caring about such things was unusual for him. The next day, Yang Zhuofan, Wei Lai's friend, returned to school to deliver a speech. He thanked the school for the opportunity to share his College Entrance Examination experience and encouraged the younger students. Following his speech, Wei Lai was invited onto the stage. The host immediately questioned him about his choice to abandon a promising finance career for the unpopular field of paleontology.

Wei Lai struggled to respond, leading the host to speculate that he hadn't fully considered his decision or that there was an unmentionable reason. The host then unfavorably contrasted Wei Lai's path with Yang Zhuofan's clear life plan and brilliant future in finance, asking Wei Lai if he regretted his choice and if his family approved. After a moment, Wei Lai firmly stated, "It's my choice. I have never regretted it."

An attempt by a student to ask a question ended awkwardly when she forgot what she wanted to say. That evening, in the advanced class, Mr. Zhou, the chemistry teacher, lectured on ions and ionization equilibrium. He then called on Wei Lai to answer a question, but Wei Lai was unable to. A Grade 3 student openly mocked Wei Lai's inability to answer, questioning his ambition to win a lifetime achievement award in paleontology.

Li Dalai defended Wei Lai, explaining that their curriculum had recently changed, and Grade 4 students had not yet covered that specific topic. This sparked a heated argument between Grade 3 and Grade 4 students. To settle the dispute, Mr. Zhou proposed a quiz challenge: one question each for Math, Physics, and Chemistry, with a 15-minute time limit, and the first to complete them would win. Wei Lai accepted the challenge and started strong, quickly tackling the initial problems.

Meanwhile, in the Grade 4 classroom, the chemistry teacher harshly criticized his students, calling them "hopeless" and comparing their progress unfavorably to students in the advanced class. Fang Xue stood up to defend her classmates, affirming their efforts and arguing that not passing an exam didn't equate to failure. Enraged, the teacher accused her of "rebellion" and punished the entire Grade 4 Class 1, ordering them to stay until midnight.

Defiantly, Gu Shang declared he was tired and unwilling to stay, then walked out of the classroom, prompting the teacher to label him "hopeless." Back in the advanced class, Wei Lai struggled with the chemistry problem as the clock continued to tick down. Just as the tension peaked, a sudden power outage plunged the classroom into darkness, halting the competition. The stifled students, released from the pressure, celebrated the power cut by throwing papers out the window.

Mr. Zhou attempted to restore order, telling students to remain in their seats while he went to investigate the cause of the outage. It was later revealed that Gu Shang had intentionally cut the power after ensuring no surveillance cameras were present in the area, a fact he casually discussed with a friend. The next day, Ms Lei announced at an assembly that the power outage was an act of "man-made sabotage" and urged the perpetrator to confess.

Gu Shang, however, dismissed the warning, confident that he wouldn't be caught. Later, Mr. Zhou spoke with Wei Lai about his recent quiz scores, noting that his performance in chemistry was still unsatisfactory for the advanced class. He suggested Wei Lai take time to consolidate his foundational knowledge before proceeding with advanced topics. Mr. Yin, who observed this conversation, later approached Wei Lai.

Acknowledging Wei Lai's chemistry struggles, Mr. Yin attempted to inspire him by asking various other students about their dreams, most of whom had none or only materialistic ones. Mr. Yin used this to highlight to Wei Lai the preciousness of having a clear dream, advising him to focus and study hard. He then invited Wei Lai to participate in a special interview for the school news agency as an "influential student" to talk about paleontology.

During the interview, Wei Lai finally revealed the personal reasons behind his decision to drop out of university. He explained that his finance major was his family's choice, not his own passion. Paleontology, however, held a deeper meaning, inspired by his late mother, a toy designer who had sparked his childhood interest with her dinosaur and mammoth creations. After her passing, paleontology became for him a symbol of eternity, representing the respect due to every life that has existed.

He felt that such prehistoric lives should not be overlooked and that someone needed to dedicate themselves to this field. He concluded by quoting Albert Camus, stating his desire to "surpass myself by despising the person I was afraid to be." In the school cafeteria, Fang Xue watched the interview on a television. Her friend teased her about her "obsessed" gaze, suggesting she had a crush on Wei Lai.

Fang Xue denied it, playfully remarking that while Wei Lai was handsome, he wasn't as handsome as a junior she liked named Wang Ziqi. Both girls then suddenly felt as though they were being watched and instinctively looked around.

Episode 7 Recap

A maintenance worker adjusts new surveillance cameras in the school, which are now discreetly monitoring students. In the cafeteria, Fang Xue and Tang Tiantian discuss whether these cameras are truly functional or just a scare tactic. During a self-study session, while Mr. Yin is away on a business trip, students are restless. Ms Lei receives a call reporting a student, Gu Shang, sleeping. She dismisses it, but then the caller mentions a girl acting strangely.

Ms Lei instructs to zoom in, and they observe Tang Tiantian writing a love letter. Ms Lei then bursts into the classroom, confronting Tang Tiantian publicly. She demands to see the love letter, stating that as a senior student, Tang Tiantian should be focused on studies, not romance. Ms Lei forces Tang Tiantian to stand up and take off her jacket, revealing the hidden letter, then proclaims that no bad deeds can escape her watch.

Tang Tiantian, deeply humiliated, hides in the restroom and cries. Fellow students try to comfort her, emphasizing that it is Ms Lei’s fault for disrespecting privacy. Fang Xue confronts Ms Lei, stating her actions were disrespectful and urging an apology. Ms Lei rebuffs her, questioning Fang Xue's authority to lecture her and openly reminding her of the significant efforts her parents made to secure her admission, implying she was ungrateful for her hard-won opportunity.

Determined to protest, Fang Xue creates a joint letter and presents it to her class, asking everyone to sign against Ms Lei's behavior. Many students hesitate, fearing reprisal. Cheng Jing courageously steps forward to sign, inspiring a few other classmates to follow suit. Fang Xue approaches Ms Lei with the signed letter, but Ms Lei dismisses it, belittling the signatories as "insignificant individuals."

Ms Lei continues to mock Fang Xue, reminding her of the efforts her parents made to get her into the school and accusing her of being ungrateful. Meanwhile, Qiao Mai is coerced by a male student who previously blackmailed her with photos. The student demands she continue washing his clothes, reminding her that he helped her get exam questions in the past and she should do more good deeds. In the cafeteria, Fang Xue discusses strategy with Gu Shang.

Gu Shang offers lighthearted advice about dealing with Ms Lei by simply agreeing with her, then subtly takes Fang Xue's chicken leg. Back in the dorm after night self-study, Fang Xue tells her roommates her new plan: since Ms Lei likes to make students take off their coats, they should simply stop wearing school uniform jackets to class. Her roommate believes this method is more effective than the joint letter.

The next day, Fang Xue proposes the no-uniform protest to her class, aiming to make a significant statement that their class is not devoid of compassion. Some students express concerns about the appropriateness of such actions, but Fang Xue insists on fighting against the constant surveillance. She takes off her jacket first, followed by Cheng Jing, then other students, including Wei Lai, who declares he is doing what he believes is right.

Tang Tiantian, however, sits quietly in a corner, dreading the potential embarrassment this protest could bring upon her. During physical activities, all classes gather on the playground, but Class 4-1 is conspicuously absent. Suddenly, they appear, all dressed in their personal clothes instead of school uniforms. Ms Lei, enraged, singles out Fang Xue, Wei Lai, Li Dalai, and Cheng Jing, accusing them of being rebellious. She questions their values and asks if they want to "fall together with her."

Two quick-thinking students put on their uniforms and return to class, but Wei Lai remains, stating Fang Xue and the others did nothing wrong. Ms Lei punishes them by making Fang Xue, Wei Lai, Cheng Jing, and other defiant students run 20 laps around the playground. As they run, exhausted but determined, they encourage each other.

Their perseverance moves other students, and word spreads, leading to class leaders from other senior grades, as well as junior grades, approaching Fang Xue to express their solidarity and willingness to join the no-uniform campaign. Fang Xue is thrilled by this growing support. Meanwhile, Tang Tiantian is subjected to mocking from other students, who link her love letter to the uniform protest, exacerbating her humiliation.

After night self-study, Tang Tiantian learns that Class 3, Senior 3 – the class of her crush, Wang Ziqi – will also participate in the no-uniform protest. Distraught at the thought of being shamed in front of him, she confronts Fang Xue in a heated argument. Tang Tiantian accuses Fang Xue of only thinking of herself and not considering others' feelings, especially her embarrassment.

Feeling hurt by her friend's strong words, Fang Xue, with a heavy heart, informs the other class leaders to cancel the solidarity protest, leaving her in an awkward position. That evening, Wei Lai sees a dejected Fang Xue sitting alone under an awning. He offers her his jacket and exchanges a brief, comforting conversation before heading back upstairs. The next morning, Wei Lai finds his jacket neatly folded on Fang Xue's desk.

Soon after, Mr. Yin returns from his business trip. He addresses the class, commending Fang Xue for helping a classmate but advising them to find wiser methods for their protests. He then boldly takes a screwdriver and begins dismantling a surveillance camera. Ms Lei witnesses this, and her angry shout startles Mr. Yin, causing him to fall from his chair. He is subsequently called to the Principal's Office for a meeting. Outside the office, students anxiously await Mr. Yin.

When he finally emerges, they rush to him, concerned about his well-being and fearing he might be transferred. Mr. Yin reassures them, stating firmly that he will not leave and will stay with them until the Gaokao (College Entrance Examination) is over. He promises to provide an explanation regarding the surveillance cameras. Later, Tang Tiantian approaches Mr. Yin to apologize for the trouble caused by her love letter.

Mr. Yin listens patiently, assuring her that liking someone is not wrong but requires prioritizing. He expresses his belief that she is a sensible student who can handle her feelings maturely, suggesting that she speak with Fang Xue directly. Following Mr. Yin's advice, Tang Tiantian apologizes to Fang Xue, expressing deep regret for her earlier outburst. Fang Xue forgives her, acknowledging her own impulsiveness and thanking Tang Tiantian for being honest.

They reconcile, and Tang Tiantian shares the story of why she likes Wang Ziqi. The next morning, the school announces a compromise: the surveillance cameras will remain for safety, but their focal length will be reasonably controlled to respect privacy. Subsequently, Mr. Yin makes a public self-criticism to the entire school for damaging school property.

In his address, he also encourages his students, reminding them that making mistakes is part of growing up and urging them to cherish their remaining time together. Upon his return to class, Mr. Yin is greeted with enthusiastic applause from his students. As he walks to the podium, he announces that a "large-scale adult interactive party"—which he then clarifies is a parents' meeting—will be held in a few days, drawing groans from the previously excited students.

Episode 8 Recap

One evening in the dorm, Tang Tiantian woke Cheng Jing from a nightmare. Fang Xue then entered with the physical examination sheets, reminding everyone to attach their photos as the medical exam was scheduled for the next day. The girls joked about the upcoming exam, with Tang Tiantian wondering if wearing less would make her lighter and another suggesting bra pads for her "flat chest." The next day, students lined up for the medical exam.

Cheng Jing was adamant about using a specific arm for the blood draw, causing a standoff with the nurse who couldn't find a vein and had already tried multiple times. Students in line began to grumble about the delay. Seeing the tension, Fang Xue stepped in, fabricating a story that Ms. Lei needed to see Cheng Jing, helping her escape the situation.

Afterward, Gu Shang approached Cheng Jing, offering to take her to the Municipal Hospital where his cousin worked if she didn't want to be examined there. Cheng Jing, however, curtly rejected his offer, making Gu Shang feel that she was being "hard to get along with." Fang Xue's roommates later discussed Cheng Jing's behavior, noting she always wore long sleeves in the dorm, hinting at a hidden reason for her reluctance.

Fang Xue then found a dejected Gu Shang on the balcony, who admitted his distress was related to Cheng Jing. Fang Xue advised him to be direct and "man up" to resolve their complicated issues. Later, while Gu Shang and Cheng Jing were on duty, Gu Shang tried to make small talk, complaining about the heat and the school making students sweep when there were cleaners. Cheng Jing remained unresponsive. Suddenly, a glass panel fell from an upper floor.

Gu Shang instinctively pulled Cheng Jing to safety, taking the impact himself. He was rushed to the infirmary with a cut on his arm. While the doctor cleaned his deep wound, Cheng Jing, still shaken, made an insensitive remark about him being a "coward," prompting the doctor to scold her for being "mean." The doctor advised Gu Shang to return daily for dressing changes.

Back in the classroom, a quiet Cheng Jing pulled her desk, which had been separated from Gu Shang's, back to its original position beside his, though Gu Shang, asleep, was unaware. After class, Fang Xue called her father, first probing to see who would attend the upcoming parents' meeting and then emphatically warning him not to bring any strange items.

Her father, however, mentioned he knew what to do and wanted to thank her deskmate, adding that her mother had just made some salted fish. Fang Xue quickly cut him off. Meanwhile, Wei Lai called Aunt Zhao, hoping she would make an excuse to Mr. Yin for him and his father not to attend the meeting. But Aunt Zhao insisted on coming, assuring him she wouldn't tell his father anything. Wei Lai reluctantly agreed and thanked her.

On the day of the parents' meeting, parents began to arrive. Fang Xue's father, despite her warnings, brought a bag of homemade salted fish. He was stopped at the school gate by a security guard who deemed it improper to bring food into the teaching building. Conveniently, Wei Lai's mother, who was also arriving, offered to store the salted fish in her car. As they walked towards the classroom together, they awkwardly encountered Fang Xue in the corridor.

Wei Lai's mother quickly made an excuse and departed. Fang Xue's father, dressed formally for the occasion, explained that he took his "appearance" seriously for his first parents' meeting. Inside the classroom, Mr. Yin began his speech, addressing student conditions, coursework, and mock exam results. During the speech, Gu Shang's mother noticed that Cheng Jing's mother was using a notebook from No.1 High School, the same school her son had previously attended.

Mr. Yin presented his teaching method, emphasizing individual interaction and positive outcomes, but some parents worried it would "drag good students down" or was "experimenting" with their children. Fang Xue's father passionately defended Mr. Yin, praising him as a Normal University graduate whose plan was "right" and "student-oriented." Another parent retorted, implying that Fang Xue's father supported it because his child was a "poor student."

The discussion grew heated until Mr. Yin intervened, delivering a heartfelt speech about how scores weren't the only important things in life, but also kinship, friendship, love, and transient youth, urging parents not to pressure their children. His words resonated, earning him applause. Outside the window, Fang Xue watched the scene unfold with embarrassment and frustration, then returned to her dorm feeling disheartened.

Her roommates, trying to lift her spirits, urged her to join them for a discount sale at the supermarket. Fang Xue agreed to go to the supermarket. While Fang Xue was engrossed in picking out sanitary pads for Tang Tiantian, she had an awkward encounter with Wei Lai, who was focused on selecting underwear. They exchanged a brief, uncomfortable conversation before Fang Xue hurried away.

At the pharmacy, Cheng Jing, buying mupirocin ointment for Gu Shang's wound, ran into her old classmate, Zhang Ning. They exchanged a brief greeting. On the way back, Wei Lai and Fang Xue took the same bus and started talking about their fathers. Later, Zhang Ning invited Cheng Jing for milk tea, where they reminisced. Zhang Ning then apologized for not intervening when Cheng Jing was bullied at No.1 High School, where she was called "Scarchick."

She went on to reveal that Gu Shang had been expelled from school for fighting Li Xu and his gang, who had continued to mock Cheng Jing and even wrote a novel based on her after her transfer. Meanwhile, after the parents' meeting concluded, Gu Shang's mother confronted Cheng Jing's mother, blaming her daughter for Gu Shang's expulsion.

She accused Cheng Jing of causing trouble and called her mother a "coquettish woman," predicting Cheng Jing would end up "degraded" like her. The argument escalated into a physical fight. Later that evening, Cheng Jing returned to the dorm to find her mother waiting for her outside. Her mother claimed she had "fallen down" while trying to find the rear gate to visit her, explaining the injuries on her body.

She then handed Cheng Jing some beef pies, her favorite, and urged her to study hard and not end up like her. Cheng Jing, however, was distant, took the food, and left. As she walked down the dorm corridor, she overheard Li Dalai gossiping about the fight between the mothers, confirming that her mother had been "scratched." Gu Shang appeared, cutting off the gossip, and seeing Cheng Jing's upset expression, quickly followed her.

Cheng Jing confronted Gu Shang about hiding the truth of his expulsion. He explained he didn't want to upset her by bringing up the past, hoping she would eventually understand him. Overwhelmed, Cheng Jing revealed the true origin of her scar: a house fire when she was 13, in which her father died saving her. She felt constantly reminded that her father's death was her fault.

Gu Shang, fumbling for words, reassured her that it wasn't her fault, and that her father wouldn't want her to blame herself. He offered his shoulder for her to cry on, comforting her deeply. After night self-study, Fang Xue and her roommates returned to a sparkling clean dorm room. Fang Xue recalled her father meticulously tidying her space, and upon finding a thoughtful note from him on her desk, she was moved.

Her roommates, seeing the late hour, wondered aloud why Gu Shang and Cheng Jing still hadn't returned, then teased Fang Xue about her "coincidental" meeting with Wei Lai at the supermarket, speculating about a special connection between them.

Episode 9 Recap

Late at night, Wu Dameng secretly practiced his favorite dance, unaware that someone was recording him with a phone. The next day, the school's anniversary celebration was announced, but a teacher promptly forbade students from Senior 4 from participating. In class, Mr. Yin reiterated the school anniversary details and the performances, stating that Senior 3 and Senior 4 students were not encouraged to join.

Although Wu Dameng seemed interested, his classmates quickly dismissed the idea, expressing disinterest in wasting time on such events. Afterwards, a student confronted Wu Dameng, asking why he hadn't signed up, revealing they had seen him dancing that night and inviting him to showcase his moves on stage. Later, in the cafeteria, Fang Xue and Tang Tiantian discussed recent money disappearances at school.

Fang Xue’s friends tried to get her to sit with Wei Lai, but Fang Xue walked directly to Wu Dameng. The shy Wu Dameng, who had meat on his tray, quickly left after a brief exchange. On the empty playground, Fang Xue found Wu Dameng watching other students prepare for the anniversary with envy. Fang Xue approached him and learned that he had been learning Jazz dance for several years but was afraid of being despised by others.

Fang Xue assured him there was nothing to be ashamed of and promised to help him get on stage, devising an "Operation Plan" for the Jazz dance. Fang Xue explained her plan to Wu Dameng: they would present the dance as a "poetry recitation" to Ms. Lei, making it sound formal and inspiring for studies, rather than directly mentioning Jazz dance. Wu Dameng was skeptical, suggesting a classical poem like "Invitation to Wine."

Ms. Lei initially dismissed their idea as "absurd," emphasizing the importance of Senior 3 and Senior 4 students focusing on their studies. Fang Xue persisted, and Wu Dameng promised to study hard. After some negotiation, Ms. Lei finally agreed to make an exception for them if Wu Dameng improved his test scores by 30 points. Fang Xue enthusiastically thanked Ms. Lei, complimenting her. However, their joy was short-lived.

At the student council office, they were informed that all performances had to be group acts to allow more students to participate in the 110th-anniversary celebration. Single or dual performances were not allowed, regardless of how good they were, because an empty stage would look bad. A disheartened Wu Dameng expressed his despair, but Fang Xue reassured him, promising to find the best practice venue and "best partners."

She quickly enlisted her good friends, Gu Shang and Er Bao, who were initially hesitant after watching Wu Dameng's dance video. They expressed concerns about the dance not being "man enough" and the need to focus on their studies to avoid familial disappointment. Fang Xue emotionally challenged their notion of masculinity, even bringing up Gu Shang's feelings for Cheng Jing.

Seeing Wu Dameng’s disappointment and Fang Xue’s conviction, Gu Shang and Er Bao reluctantly agreed to join, with Er Bao jokingly asking if dancing would help him attract girls like Fiona. During their first rehearsal in the dance room, the group was unaware that someone was secretly recording their practice with a phone. The video quickly spread among the students, who openly mocked Wu Dameng for his "sissy" and "feminine" dance style, even comparing him to Fang Xue.

Back in the classroom, Wei Lai approached Fang Xue, asking if rehearsing would affect her studies. Fang Xue replied that "time is like water in a sponge, just squeeze it to get some." She also asked Wei Lai if he had enough money for living after hearing about his missing 2,000 yuan, but he declined her offer to lend him some. On a hot afternoon, Fang Xue secretly brought dance CDs to Wu Dameng at the deserted playground.

Wu Dameng was impressed by how she obtained them despite strict school rules, having "scavenged" them from the class leaders of junior grades. They returned to the classroom to pick out music, but their excited discussion disturbed other students during their nap. Li Dalai rudely interrupted, calling them "girls" for their "effeminate dance." Gu Shang became enraged, but Fang Xue held him back.

Meanwhile, Hao Ren, Wu Dameng's deskmate, continued to harass Wu Dameng, forcing him to sing a song with lyrics like "I'm a girl" while touching him. Fang Xue confronted Hao Ren, attempting to make him switch seats, but he refused, daring her to tell the teacher. Fang Xue then approached Mr. Yin, pleading to switch seats with Wu Dameng, but couldn't reveal the real reason without exposing Wu Dameng's secret.

Mr. Yin explained that seats were assigned based on academic performance to maintain fairness in the class's reward system. Fang Xue admitted she couldn't provide a convincing reason, and Mr. Yin dismissed her, stating he had a meeting and the headmaster would be visiting the next day. Fang Xue relayed her failed attempt to Wu Dameng, who, feeling he was dragging her down, suggested they cancel the dance.

Fang Xue refused, reminding him of his dream to perform and promising to handle Hao Ren. The next day, during the headmaster's visit to inspect Mr. Yin’s "Doraemon Project" for improving class performance, Fang Xue saw an opportunity. She boldly raised an objection, stating that the "forced team" structure was problematic.

When pressed for a reason, she publicly declared her "crush" on Wei Lai, claiming that being seated so close to him every day was affecting her studies and that "that thing would happen." She even cited a previous incident where another student's cold water "made her sober." She argued that rotating seats would be a better solution. Wei Lai later confronted Fang Xue, asking for an explanation and misinterpreting her public declaration as genuine affection, even promising to protect her.

Fang Xue, exasperated by his narcissism, could only walk away, unable to explain the complicated situation. After night self-study, Hao Ren continued to torment Wu Dameng with his diary, escalating his insults. Finally pushed to his limit, Wu Dameng snapped and threw a water bucket at Hao Ren before storming off.

The following day in class, Fang Xue picked up a pen for Wei Lai, which Li Dalai used as an excuse to mock her for "flattering" Wei Lai and for "wanting pie in the sky." As other students gossiped, Wu Dameng, unable to stand it anymore, bravely stood up. He clarified that Fang Xue’s actions were to help him, explaining that Hao Ren had been bullying and threatening him with his diary to separate them.

He admitted he had been too cowardly to speak up before. Fang Xue thanked him, saying it was "never mind, Sister." That evening, Mr. Yin had a private talk with Wu Dameng. He informed Wu Dameng that Hao Ren had been expelled not because of the diary incident, but for stealing a large sum of money from the school.

Mr. Yin reassured Wu Dameng that his secret was safe and encouraged him to continue preparing for the anniversary performance, offering his full support. The team's rehearsals continued, but not smoothly. Wu Dameng pointed out that Gu Shang and Er Bao were struggling, looking "awkward" and "shy" and resembling "radio calisthenics." Fang Xue urged them to "brace up" as costumes were on their way.

During a chemistry class, Fang Xue worried about their costumes getting wet in the heavy rain, as their audition was the next day. Gu Shang feigned needing to use the restroom, and Er Bao followed him out. Fang Xue, fearing for their performance, rushed out after them. From the classroom window, Wei Lai secretly watched Fang Xue run in the rain, his eyes filled with concern as she stumbled and fell.

Tang Tiantian later noticed Wei Lai often peeking at Fang Xue, teasing that while Fang Xue might not truly like him, he definitely liked her, a notion Fang Xue quickly dismissed. Finally, the school anniversary audition arrived. Fang Xue and her team were in the middle of their performance when Wu Dameng's mother burst into the auditorium.

She angrily confronted Wu Dameng, publicly accusing him of lying about taking Taekwondo lessons, for which she had given him money, when he was actually learning dance. Calling him "disgusting," she then slapped him in front of everyone.

Episode 10 Recap

Wu Dameng reflected on his life from childhood, recalling his birth and his mother’s disapproval of his interests, particularly dancing. His mother had once told him that dancing was for girls, and he should not engage in it. Later, she discovered he had been learning Jazz dance instead of Taekwondo, as he had claimed in high school. She was upset about his nickname “Sister” and how he allowed others to humiliate him.

She confronted him with an online video, chastising him for being "so open." She expressed regret for neglecting him during his childhood while she was busy earning money, believing that her absence led him astray. She begged him to stop dancing, but Wu Dameng insisted Jazz dance was not inappropriate. His mother, frustrated, threatened to disown him. After the heated argument, Wu Dameng sat sadly in the dance studio.

Fang Xue found him there and comforted him, noting that the video’s uploader, Hao Ren, was truly "not human." She encouraged Wu Dameng, telling him that many people praised his dancing. Wu Dameng confided in Fang Xue, explaining that his mother, an able woman, had always been strict with him, often calling him timid and expressing disappointment that he couldn't inherit her business or would embarrass her. He felt she never cared about his true passions.

Fang Xue encouraged him to fight for his dream, reminding him that this might be his last chance as they were in their senior year. Moved by her words, Wu Dameng resolved to continue dancing. During a dance practice, as Fang Xue and her friends were playfully competing in dance skills, Gu Shang accidentally twisted his ankle. At the school infirmary, Cheng Jing rushed in upon hearing the news, much to the knowing amusement of their friends.

Cheng Jing expressed concern over his recurring injuries. Gu Shang, worried about the performance, asked the school doctor not to inform their class teacher or Ms Lei about his ankle injury. Fang Xue later confirmed that Gu Shang would not be able to rehearse with them, which worried Tang Tiantian about the team's formation. When Tang Tiantian suggested cancelling the performance, Wei Lai sharply told her to "shut up." Fang Xue, however, declared her intention to find a solution.

The next day, Fang Xue went around the classroom, asking various classmates if they would be willing to join the dance. When she glanced at Li Dalai, who was sitting next to Wei Lai, Wei Lai mistakenly thought she was looking at him. When Fang Xue only asked Li Dalai and moved on, Wei Lai felt a pang of jealousy.

Later, Gu Shang asked Wei Lai if Fang Xue had approached him, and Wei Lai confirmed she hadn't, suggesting she was avoiding him due to recent rumors about them. The following morning, Wei Lai’s roommates teased him, revealing he had been calling out "Fang Xue" in his sleep. Wei Lai denied it, but his friends persisted. Meanwhile, in the locker room, Erbao advised a frustrated Fang Xue, who had failed to recruit new members, to ask Wei Lai.

Erbao was convinced Wei Lai would agree, even when Fang Xue expressed doubt. Fang Xue tried to persuade Wei Lai, but he coldly refused, asking if Erbao had put her up to it. At lunchtime, Cheng Jing brought food to Gu Shang in the classroom. Fang Xue took the opportunity to subtly mock Wei Lai for not being "loyal" to his friends. Offended, Wei Lai left the cafeteria.

While delivering food to Gu Shang, Cheng Jing discovered their shared passion for a boxing magazine. They bonded over their love for the sport, sharing personal stories about how they got into boxing. Gu Shang explained his connection to boxing after his father’s death, finding strength in it amidst bullying, while Cheng Jing related it to her own father's strict expectations. Gu Shang mentioned regretting not being able to buy the latest issue due to his injury.

That evening, amidst a heavy downpour, Cheng Jing braved the rain, scaled the school wall, and returned soaking wet with the magazine for Gu Shang. Touched by her gesture, Gu Shang agreed to continue with the rehearsals. Later, Cheng Jing approached Wei Lai, hoping to persuade him to help, but he retorted, asking why she was so worried about Gu Shang. This question sparked a realization in Wei Lai about Cheng Jing's feelings for Gu Shang.

Back in his dorm, after much contemplation, Wei Lai surprised his roommates by offering to join the dance. He later told a friend that he realized Gu Shang’s true affection was for Cheng Jing, which brought him a sense of relief. The next day, Wei Lai was in high spirits, greeting classmates enthusiastically and even pausing to tidy his hair. However, his enthusiasm waned during rehearsal. He arrived late, claiming he was "studying."

Fang Xue tried to teach him simplified moves, but Wei Lai was reluctant, seeing himself merely as a "filler" and making little effort. The rehearsal was far from satisfactory, with his movements being uncoordinated. Meanwhile, Ms Lei received a phone call from Wu Dameng’s mother, who strongly demanded that her son not be allowed to perform. Unaware of this, Fang Xue and Wu Dameng excitedly presented their improved test scores to Ms Lei, reminding her of their agreement.

Fang Xue proudly announced Wu Dameng had improved by 32 points. However, Ms Lei declared that a 10-point bonus question could not be counted, reducing his improvement to only 20 points, which was below the agreed-upon 30. She then revealed that Wu Dameng’s mother had called, explicitly forbidding him from performing, leaving Ms Lei with "nothing I can do." Wu Dameng was devastated. Later, on the balcony, Fang Xue and Wei Lai discussed Wu Dameng’s situation.

Wei Lai expressed his empathy, noting that he and Wu Dameng were similar, both loving things others found hard to understand. He feared that if Wu Dameng couldn't perform this time, he might lose the courage to pursue his passion again. Wei Lai also mentioned he heard that Class 3, Senior 1’s program was not progressing well, giving Fang Xue a new idea. Fang Xue immediately sought out the students from Class 3, Senior 1.

She enthusiastically pitched the idea of Wu Dameng’s group performing, highlighting how cool boys dancing Jazz was and promising it would be a hit. She appealed to their kindness, explaining that Wu Dameng was a good friend whose long-cherished dream was to perform on stage. The Class 3 students, whose own program was struggling, agreed to let Wu Dameng's group take their spot, asking only for secrecy until the school celebration.

On the day of the school celebration, Fang Xue's group, dressed in flashy costumes, prepared backstage. Wei Lai grumbled about the outfits. Wu Dameng felt nervous, but Fang Xue reassured him, suggesting that a little nervousness might lead to an extraordinary performance. A student confirmed that the host was ready for their turn.

As they were about to go on stage, Ms Lei appeared and tried to stop them, citing the presence of important provincial and municipal leaders and deeming their attire inappropriate. She ordered them back. Wu Dameng defiantly stated that he "had to dance today" to challenge prejudice. Just then, Mr. Yin intervened, distracting Ms Lei and allowing the students to rush onto the stage. Their sharp dance moves captivated the entire audience, igniting cheers from the crowd.

Students from other classes watched the live broadcast, some commenting on the dance's "sissy" nature, while others disagreed. Backstage, Wu Dameng's mother watched her son perform, overcome with emotion. During his post-performance interview, Wu Dameng thanked Fang Xue for her help, and his three roommates for their support despite not being dancers themselves. He also gratefully acknowledged two young female leaders from the Education Commission who appreciated their dance.

Finally, he spoke of his mother, detailing her struggles as a single parent, working hard for her accounting qualification and never complaining about life's hardships. He concluded by thanking her and promising to protect her now that he had grown up, moving his mother to tears. After the performance, Wei Lai teasingly remarked that Wu Dameng danced "quite enchantingly."

Fang Xue praised Wei Lai, saying he did a great job, despite his complaints about being left alone to clean the stage by Ms Lei. Wei Lai, still grumbling about the trouble, declared he would "never dance again in his life."

Episode 11 Recap

During a self-study session, Fang Xue was listening to music with her earphones when Ms. Lei unexpectedly appeared, confiscating the earphones. Wei Lai, observing Fang Xue's misfortune, chuckled at her. However, Ms. Lei then turned her attention to Wei Lai, demanding his mobile phone as well, much to his chagrin.

Wei Lai later playfully lamented to Fang Xue that he would lose his evening's study time because of her antics, to which she retorted that it was his own fault for showing off. He then half-seriously asked her, as a "straight A student," to get his items back from Ms. Lei, but Fang Xue said she couldn't. As they posted the exam seating chart, they exchanged teasing comments about their photos.

During their playful interaction, Wei Lai grabbed Fang Xue's hand, leading to a moment of silent eye contact. A sudden scream from Qiao Mai then interrupted their conversation, and they rushed to investigate. Fearing exposure, Qiao Mai quickly assured them she was fine and that the boy with her was just a friend, denying anything had happened. The next day, after an exam, Fang Xue's father came to school with a package.

Fang Xue left the items on her seat and went outside, only for her classmates to discover the contents: funeral-related items, including paper offerings and a "Paper Audi." Li Dalai led the mockery, accusing Fang Xue of bringing "things of the dead" to class and calling her "unlucky" because her family runs a funeral business. Fang Xue, deeply embarrassed, argued back before leaving.

She confronted her father outside, who sheepishly explained that he had accidentally mixed up her mother's bag of salted fish with a package for his work. He apologized, offered to replace the damaged paper Audi, and reminded her not to be ashamed of their family's honest work. Later that evening in the dorm, Fang Xue's roommates tried to comfort her, assuring her that Li Dalai's words weren't worth taking to heart and that he would stop if she didn't react.

One roommate jokingly suggested Fang Xue was upset because Wei Lai had laughed, a claim Fang Xue quickly denied. The following day, Mr. Yin announced to the class that Fang Xue and Wei Lai had achieved an outstanding combined score of over 1100 in the recent fourth mock exam. He also informed them about an upcoming tug-of-war competition, encouraging everyone to participate, mentioning that journalists would be present. Mr. Yin appointed Wu Dameng to organize the class's participation.

Wu Dameng, feeling nervous as he had never led such an event, discussed the details with Fang Xue and other classmates. They realized they were short on male participants. Fang Xue suggested inviting Wei Lai, but some dismissed him as a "nerd." Meanwhile, Gu Shang, having just visited the infirmary for a foot issue, received a bento box from Cheng Jing, and they shared playful banter.

Cheng Jing noticed Gu Shang still had a cold and questioned his ability to participate in the tug-of-war, but he insisted he was fine. Back in the classroom, Wu Dameng attempted to rally more students for the tug-of-war, but met with little enthusiasm, with many citing study time as a reason not to participate.

Just then, Gu Shang, still limping, walked in and declared his willingness to join, stating that even with his injury, he was more capable than those refusing to participate. His determination instantly sparked enthusiasm, and more students eagerly signed up. Despite this, some students remained stubborn and ignored Fang Xue's pleas. Eventually, Wei Lai stepped in and, through his persuasion, the remaining reluctant classmates agreed to join.

The class united and secured a victory in their first match, though Er Bao unfortunately sustained a hand injury, ruling him out of subsequent rounds. Unexpectedly, Tang Tiantian, who had previously been excluded from consideration, decided to participate in the upcoming match against Class 3, Senior 3. In the water room, Tang Tiantian confided in Fiona about her long-standing crush on Wang Ziqi, the monitor of Class 3.

She shared a humorous anecdote about how she had decided to pursue her dream of attending Capital Normal University because she had misheard Wang Ziqi talking about his "wet hands" (shou shi) as "Capital Normal University" (shou shi). Fiona, amused by the story, encouraged Tang Tiantian, reminding her that unconventional teachers can still be great, referencing the film "Dead Poets Society," and urged her to work hard.

During the tug-of-war match, some of Wang Ziqi's classmates made derogatory comments about Tang Tiantian's appearance and past actions. Fang Xue's class lost the first round. For the second round, Wei Lai rallied the team, emphasizing the importance of spirit and giving their all. However, during the intense struggle, Tang Tiantian stumbled and fell, disrupting her teammates' rhythm and ultimately leading to their defeat. Devastated and hearing further mocking remarks, Tang Tiantian left the field in tears.

Moments later, Wang Ziqi approached her, offering a tissue. He gently reassured her that she had done well and shouldn't listen to the negative comments. He then revealed that he remembered the anonymous love letter she had sent in her third year of high school and had even replied to it, expressing how her appreciation had touched him. They shared a warm moment, agreeing to continue supporting each other.

Back in the classroom, Li Dalai continued to taunt Fang Xue, blaming her and her family's funeral business for their loss in the tug-of-war. Fang Xue retorted angrily, but inwardly she was deeply hurt. After class, Wei Lai followed her, attempting to comfort her and telling her not to heed Li Dalai's mean words.

Fang Xue, however, asked if he also considered her unlucky and confessed her belief that her family's profession brought misfortune, urging him to stay away from her before walking off. Later, at home, Fang Xue offered to assist her father with an "urgent" funeral service. She expressed a desire to finally understand his work, which she had neglected to do for many years. Her father agreed.

At the ceremony, Fang Xue helped distribute flowers while her father, Mr. Fang, delivered a heartfelt eulogy for the deceased, Li Fugui, praising his kindness despite his lack of wealth. After the service, Mr. Fang politely declined a cash offering from Li Fugui's friends. On the drive home, Fang Xue apologized to her father for her past misunderstandings regarding his profession.

Her father explained that he had simply taken over from his own father, and while he had initially faced similar mockery, he realized that all professions, from midwives to funeral directors, are equally vital as long as one performs them with dignity. Upon their return, Fang Xue's mother had prepared a celebratory dinner.

She joyfully informed Fang Xue that Mr. Yin had called to praise her excellent exam results and that the school radio station wanted to interview her and Wei Lai. The next day, Fang Xue and Wei Lai went to the school radio station for their interview. The interviewer, however, quickly downplayed Fang Xue's academic improvement, attributing it entirely to Wei Lai's guidance.

She then asked Fang Xue how someone with her "lowest grade" could become class monitor, visibly making Fang Xue uncomfortable. After Fang Xue briefly answered that it was perhaps due to her helpful nature, the interviewer abruptly ended Fang Xue's segment and directed all further questions solely to Wei Lai. As students watching the live broadcast whispered negative comments about Fang Xue's humiliation, Wei Lai used his time on air to speak passionately against gossip and malicious slander.

He shared his personal experience of being mocked in childhood due to his father's part-time work and emphasized the importance of not doubting or changing oneself due to others' hurtful words. He concluded by telling those who spread rumors that their actions brought no benefit and advised them to "behave themselves." After the interview, Fang Xue offered Wei Lai a yogurt as a gesture of gratitude. He accepted it with a hidden smile, though he playfully complained about the lack of a straw, before reminding her about an upcoming weekly exam.

Episode 12 Recap

Fang Xue reflected on how her Senior 4 school life often felt dull, with the monthly family meal being the highlight. During one such dinner, her mother announced a significant decision: Fang Xue should invite Wei Lai over for a meal during the next holiday, to thank him for helping her studies. Fang Xue tried to argue that she also worked hard, but her mother insisted on showing gratitude.

When her father suggested they couldn't invite anyone due to the house being filled with newly arrived goods, her mother admonished him for not renting a warehouse. Fang Xue inwardly worried about inviting a boy over for the first time. Fang Xue approached Wei Lai about his holiday plans, to which he replied he would stay at school, likely eating instant noodles. She hesitantly extended the invitation, framing it as her mother's idea to thank him for his academic help.

To her surprise, Wei Lai immediately accepted. Fang Xue was puzzled by his quick acceptance, having expected a refusal. Later, while eating in the school canteen, Fang Xue observed Wei Lai's strong sense of cleanliness when he told Er Bao not to use his spoon. Realizing how messy her own home was, Fang Xue became anxious and decided she needed to find an excuse to cancel the invitation.

She told Wei Lai that her sister had contracted a serious case of chickenpox, making it inconvenient for him to visit. When Wei Lai offered to visit her sister, Fang Xue quickly emphasized the contagious nature of the illness. Wei Lai reluctantly agreed to cancel, though Fang Xue noticed his visible disappointment. She felt a twinge of regret but believed it was better than the embarrassment of him seeing her home.

From Wei Lai's perspective, Fang Xue's invitation had thrilled him, despite his calm exterior. He even meticulously chose outfits for the visit, contemplating whether blue or red best conveyed the desired image. His roommate, however, mentioned that Fang Xue had also invited him and Cheng Jing, but they were busy with a boxing match, implying Wei Lai would be alone with Fang Xue. Wei Lai hoped nothing would go wrong.

When Er Bao tried to share his spoon, Wei Lai politely declined, explaining he had a cold and didn't want to spread it, secretly hoping Fang Xue would notice his thoughtfulness. He was then "surprised" when Fang Xue gave him the news about her sister's chickenpox. Moments later, Mr. Ying informed Fang Xue that her father was waiting at the school gate. Feeling stood up, Wei Lai decided to seize the opportunity with Fang Xue's father to reinstate the invitation.

At the school gate, Wei Lai greeted Fang Xue's father. The father reiterated the invitation to dinner. Wei Lai mentioned Fang Xue's sister having chickenpox, only for her father to reveal that Fang Xue was an only child and had no sister with chickenpox. Fang Xue quickly tried to steer her father away, claiming it was a joke.

Wei Lai, however, now knew the truth and was more determined than ever to visit Fang Xue's home, thinking, "You can't trick me in this way. Do you think I got these 100-plus extra points for nothing? I am definitely going to your home." The next day, Fang Xue deliberately left school half an hour early to avoid walking with Wei Lai and sparking gossip.

However, Wei Lai, having lost sleep over the upcoming visit, was already at the bus stop, waiting for her. Seeing her approach, he felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. They exchanged greetings, confirmed their breakfast status, and got on the 322 bus. On the bus, Wei Lai felt an unusual nervousness, unlike previous outings. Fang Xue confided in him, expressing how touched she was that he joined their class.

She admitted that she initially found him difficult but had grown to appreciate him. Suddenly, the bus broke down, and passengers were asked to help push. As they pushed, Fang Xue recalled her childhood, frequently falling while pushing her father's old tricycle. Almost on cue, she stumbled and fell. Wei Lai, who had been laughing at the thought of her falling, rushed to help her up. With the bus starting to move, they held hands and ran, narrowly catching it.

Wei Lai found Fang Xue, despite being covered in dirt, exceptionally charming. Finally arriving home, Wei Lai remarked that her home was quite hard to find. Fang Xue invited him in, apologizing for the mess and blaming her father for not tidying up after an urgent job. She poured Wei Lai a glass of water while her parents bickered in the background. Wei Lai commented that her house was "quite special," leaving Fang Xue feeling utterly mortified.

Just then, Fang Xue’s mother arrived and, seeing the chaotic state of the house, suggested taking Wei Lai out to visit places. Despite Fang Xue’s protest that there was nothing interesting nearby, her mother insisted, promising to take him to a "good place you have never been to." They ended up at a 2 Yuan Store. Fang Xue was horrified, embarrassed to be seen with the school's "male god" in such a humble shop with her "simple" mother.

Her mother’s enthusiastic bargaining with the shop owner further mortified Fang Xue, who abandoned Wei Lai to wait outside. Fang Xue’s mother, unfazed, then pulled Wei Lai over and began sharing anecdotes about Fang Xue's mischievous childhood, like her father washing his hair in a basin and Fang Xue likening him to a "boiled pig's head," or Fang Xue injuring herself with an "apple peeler."

Wei Lai mused that if he had known Fang Xue since childhood, life would have been quite joyful. Fang Xue, feeling her image had hit rock bottom, hoped that dinner might salvage some of Wei Lai’s good impression. However, dinner brought more disappointment. Her father’s planned "feast" of crabs had spoiled, leaving only noodles with gravy. Fang Xue was dismayed, but Wei Lai genuinely enjoyed the noodles, praising them as delicious.

Her parents continued to bicker, with her father making awkward small talk about Wei Lai's family business, which was also "doing business." The situation escalated when her father insisted on serving the slightly off-smelling crabs, now stir-fried with chili, claiming they were still good. Fang Xue, mortified, pleaded with her father to save her some face. This triggered her mother's pent-up frustration.

She lashed out at her father for his stinginess and for failing to prepare properly for Wei Lai's visit. Wei Lai tried to intervene, assuring them he enjoyed the meal, but her mother, declaring herself "humiliated," continued her tirade, criticizing her husband's frugal habits and his family responsibilities. Fang Xue tried to calm them, but her mother dramatically threw a bowl and stormed out, with Fang Xue rushing after her.

Left alone, Wei Lai and Fang Xue’s father sat in awkward silence. The father then suggested they "go high" and took Wei Lai to a park. He explained he needed to walk for his high blood sugar and reassured Wei Lai that his wife's temper was like "a bark worse than her bite," quickly subsiding.

He then offered Wei Lai advice on marriage, stating that occasional arguments were normal and that "a couple will fight but the love between them won't wane." He even revealed his strategy of buying fatty meat to give his wife a reason to criticize him, allowing him to make concessions and smooth things over. Meanwhile, Fang Xue's mother, having cooled down, reminisced with Fang Xue about her father’s awkward dancing in their younger days, a memory that softened her anger.

They decided to head home, as her father would be worried. Later, Fang Xue and Wei Lai walked by the sea. Wei Lai realized his recorder, which had been confiscated, would have been perfect for capturing the sounds of the sea breeze, waves, and distant boats, to remember this night. He then sincerely thanked Fang Xue, saying he had had a wonderfully happy and fulfilling holiday.

He found her endearing, even when she fell, appreciated her father’s noodles, and even found beauty in the chaotic visit to the 2 Yuan Store and witnessing her parents' quarrel. He concluded by expressing that he now understood "what made Fang Xue what she is today," leaving Fang Xue bewildered by his compliments and his sudden, quick departure. Back at school, Fang Xue found herself feeling more self-conscious around Wei Lai, often recalling his earnest "thank you."

Wei Lai's friend rushed to him, urging him to call his anxious father because Wei Lai's own phone had been confiscated. Fang Xue, seeing Mr. Ying, seized the moment to ask for her reward for reaching 1100 points. Wei Lai, after his phone call, also sought out Mr. Ying to claim his own reward. Later, as the sun set, Wei Lai watched Fang Xue, feeling a sense of wonder. They secretly agreed to meet after class. With calm expressions but pounding hearts, they approached each other and exchanged the items that had been confiscated from them earlier.

Episode 13 Recap

November marked the peak of flu season, with media outlets consistently reporting on the latest developments. Despite Wei Lai's warnings about consuming cold drinks and nearly expired chicken feet, Fang Xue disregarded his advice, confidently asserting her strong health and immunity to fever. However, that very night, she developed a fever. The next morning, Fang Xue was isolated due to a viral flu diagnosis.

After class, a concerned Wei Lai was stopped by Ms Lei, who questioned him before he could rush off. Once released, he hurried to Fang Xue's isolation room, but seeing her friends already there, he reluctantly left. Meanwhile, Fang Xue's friend, Tang Tiantian, also contracted the flu and joined her in isolation. Later, during the night self-study session, Gu Shang offered his jacket to Cheng Jing, but she politely declined, playfully remarking on the childish pattern of his T-shirt.

In isolation, Fang Xue and Tang Tiantian chatted, with Tang Tiantian revealing her past experience of temporary deafness as a child, which taught her to cherish hearing. Suddenly, Tang Tiantian received a comforting text message from Wang Ziqi, cheering her up and reinforcing Fang Xue's belief that difficulties, once overcome, can lead to new opportunities.

On the other side of the school, Wei Lai met a friend to collect flu medicine, fever reducers, cough syrup, vitamins, ginseng tablets, and some snacks. His friend commented on his obvious motives, speculating it was for Fang Xue. Wei Lai, preoccupied, didn't even say thank you before rushing to deliver the medicine. Navigating carefully to avoid being caught, he eventually reached Fang Xue's isolation room. Through the window, he handed her the items.

Fang Xue accepted the snacks but refused the health supplements, calling them "for elders." Wei Lai reprimanded her for being stubborn and causing worry among her friends. Fang Xue then challenged him to sing her a song, mentioning that Cheng Jing and others had sung for her. Wei Lai refused, dismissing singing as useless and telling her to be sensible given her condition.

Fang Xue accused him of being ridiculous and lecturing her, then angrily closed the window, telling him to leave. Dejected, Wei Lai vented his frustration in the water room. Gu Shang approached him, recognizing his dispute with Fang Xue. Wei Lai wondered if he should sing "Write a poem for you," like her roommates. Gu Shang encouraged him, suggesting that a song could make her happy and that sometimes a bold gesture is what's needed.

Inspired, Wei Lai went to the broadcast station. He requested the song "Write a poem for you" to be played anonymously for Fang Xue, wishing her a speedy recovery. The emotional song resonated with many students and even Ms Lei. Feeling hopeful, Wei Lai set off to see Fang Xue again. However, the blare of an ambulance siren cut through the air. Sensing something was wrong, he quickened his pace. He arrived at her room to find her bed empty.

Tang Tiantian informed him that Fang Xue had been taken to the hospital. At the hospital, Fang Xue lay unconscious. The doctor informed her parents that her condition was not optimistic, citing high fever, difficulty breathing, and coma, and warned of potential life-threatening complications if her condition worsened, though he reassured them she was only a suspected case so far.

Overwhelmed, Fang Xue's mother wept in the corridor while her father, typically frugal, went to the supermarket, choosing only the most expensive and best items for his daughter. Back at school, Wei Lai requested leave from Mr. Ying to visit Fang Xue. Mr. Ying was initially hesitant, concerned about the school's reputation and Wei Lai's safety, but Wei Lai insisted on delivering homework, assuring his teacher he would take responsibility and not tell anyone.

Sensing Wei Lai's deep concern, Mr. Ying granted him leave, reminding him to be careful. Wei Lai rushed to the hospital and found Fang Xue's father. He saw Fang Xue through the window, still unconscious in her bed, which visibly saddened him. He gave Fang Xue's father some notes for her.

As Wei Lai was leaving, Fang Xue's father stopped him, mentioning that Fang Xue had kept asking for her repeater and asked if Wei Lai could retrieve it for her. Wei Lai agreed. On the school rooftop, Wei Lai listened to Fang Xue's repeater. He was shocked to hear his own voice among the recordings. Cheng Jing joined him, seeking fresh air. Wei Lai expressed his feelings of helplessness in the face of illness.

Cheng Jing calmly replied that such is life, and one can only do their best and leave the rest to fate. Wei Lai, still pondering the anonymous song, asked Cheng Jing if she had been the one who requested "Write a poem for you" for Fang Xue. Cheng Jing, without directly claiming responsibility, acknowledged the indirect nature of such a gesture and pointed out that Fang Xue hadn't actually heard it.

She then suggested that Wei Lai could find a way for Fang Xue to hear it. Driven by this, Wei Lai approached Ms Lei, proposing to change the monotonous school bell to a more soothing melody, arguing it would help students relax and alleviate stress.

Ms Lei was reluctant, citing school rules, but Wei Lai persisted, even threatening to transfer to No. 1 High School if his request was not granted, an implied move that would benefit No. 1 High School by bringing a top student. Ms Lei, surprised by his determination, relented. Back at the hospital, the doctor confirmed Fang Xue was out of danger. Her parents expressed their relief and gratitude.

Fang Xue's mother light-heartedly scolded her daughter for not listening to warnings, but also mentioned Wei Lai's visit during her coma, noting how worried he had been. Fang Xue's father added that Wei Lai had even brought her notes. Later, as her parents left to buy food, Fang Xue, now awake, found Wei Lai's letter tucked within the notes he had brought.

In the letter, Wei Lai apologized for their argument, admitting his initial dismissal of singing for her was hypocritical since he ended up requesting "Write a poem for you" for her over the broadcast. He reflected on how he had learned the importance of mutual support from her and her friends and promised to accompany her on her journey. A gentle smile touched Fang Xue's lips as she read his heartfelt words.

Upon Fang Xue's return to school, the new, cheerful bell music, a direct result of Wei Lai's efforts, filled the corridor. Her friends rushed to greet her with hugs, overjoyed to have her back. In the joyful commotion, Fang Xue met Wei Lai's gaze. He smiled warmly and slowly pulled out her seat, a silent gesture that conveyed everything. Overcome with emotion, Fang Xue couldn't hold back tears of joy, realizing the depth of their connection.

Episode 14 Recap

Fang Xue initiated a discussion among her classmates, sharing a rumor that their class might be split, with the lowest-performing students transferred to Senior 3 after an upcoming exam. While some were skeptical, Mr. Yin soon officially confirmed the news, causing widespread dismay among the students. He explained that as the top private school in Xiang Jiang, they were running a re-enrolled class for the first time this year, and underperforming in the upcoming exam could lead to transfers.

Students voiced concerns about adapting to new environments so close to the Entrance Examination. Mr. Yin acknowledged their feelings, revealing he was negotiating with the school but urged them to excel in the exam to save Class 1 Senior 4. He then asked Fiona to meet him after class. In his office, Mr. Yin spoke with Fiona, whose mother had contacted him about Fiona's interest in studying film abroad.

Mr. Yin thought it was a good idea but emphasized it was her personal decision. He advised her to continue preparing for the college entrance exam and inform her mother once she made up her mind. This discussion left Fiona feeling confused and conflicted. Later, during a self-study session, Wei Lai quizzed Fang Xue on a chemistry problem. Fang Xue correctly answered and claimed her reward, a Yakult.

Suddenly, Er Bao burst into the classroom, visibly agitated, and returned to his seat without responding to his concerned classmates. After class, Li Dalai began gossiping about Er Bao, revealing that Er Bao's older brother, a Fudan University student, had died in a car accident where everyone in the other vehicle also perished.

Li Dalai cruelly mocked Er Bao as a "five-year loser" who couldn't pass the Entrance Exam, grouping him and his brother as "a nest of rats and snakes." Enraged, Er Bao physically attacked Li Dalai. Classmates quickly intervened to separate the two. Er Bao, still fuming, yelled at them not to follow him and stormed out of the classroom. When Er Bao failed to return to class all day, Fang Xue grew concerned and suggested they search for him.

Li Dalai retorted that Er Bao was not justified in hitting him and accused Fang Xue, as class monitor, of prioritizing a "poor student" over their studies. Undeterred, Fang Xue decided to search alone, prompting Fiona and other sympathetic friends to join her. After splitting up to cover more ground, Fang Xue eventually spotted Er Bao on the rooftop. Fearing the worst, she quickly alerted Wei Lai, and they hurried to him.

On the rooftop, Fang Xue and Wei Lai tried to persuade Er Bao to come down, but he angrily pushed them away, stating he wanted to be alone. He accused them of being childish and insensitive, saying they couldn't understand his pain of losing a brother and being a re-enrolled student for five years. He felt they were all "living happily" while he endured his suffering. When they wouldn't leave, Er Bao declared he would and then ran off again.

Fang Xue returned to class to inform her anxious classmates that Er Bao was found but needed space. Li Dalai immediately resumed his taunts, suggesting that people would only care about Er Bao when "his" brother died, and implying Er Bao was no better than his "hit-and-run driver" brother. Gu Shang, fed up, moved to confront Li Dalai physically, but Mr. Yin entered and stopped them.

Recognizing that the students were too unsettled to study, Mr. Yin announced they would watch the film "Saving Private Ryan" to practice listening skills. After the movie, Mr. Yin asked Li Dalai to explain its meaning. Li Dalai offered a cynical interpretation, separating film from real life. Mr. Yin then clarified the true story behind the film, about Lieutenant Nylander of the 101st Airborne Division, whose three brothers died in battle, leading to his rescue to reunite with his family.

Mr. Yin underscored the importance of empathy, stating that a life without basic human kindness is "meaningless" and "worthless." He urged his students to treat Er Bao with "normalcy" and "greatest care" upon his return. The following day, Er Bao quietly returned to his seat through the rear gate. Classmates offered warm welcomes and encouragement. Mr. Yin instructed him to fill out a late form.

Li Dalai, however, couldn't resist a final jab, warning Er Bao he wouldn't be spared if the class split. Others offered to help him catch up on missed lessons and notes. Meanwhile, in the cafeteria, Fiona received a text message from Kelly ending their friendship. Distraught, Fiona tried to call Kelly back but couldn't connect, deepening her distress. During a chemistry mock exam, a distracted Fiona attempted to turn in her paper early, but the invigilator prevented her.

Noticing unusual writings on Fiona's draft paper, which included lines like "Choose a family. Choose a drama?" , the invigilator accused her of violating exam rules and writing "dirty" content. Fiona clarified they were movie lines, but the invigilator, a Chinese teacher, dismissed her explanation. In the hallway, their argument escalated.

Fiona asserted her right to write what she wished on scratch paper and, despite the teacher threatening to report her to Ms Lei, declared she had to leave and pushed past, saying "Get out of the way." She then stumbled upon Kelly being intimate with another person, leaving her utterly heartbroken. Back at school, Fiona faced severe criticism from Ms Lei.

Mr. Yin intervened, defending Fiona by explaining the lines were from the movie "Trainspotting" and that Fiona was an art student. He argued that writing on draft paper shouldn't be considered a disciplinary offense, even in the national exam. However, Ms Lei remained firm regarding Fiona's defiance and disrespectful attitude, ultimately assigning Fiona a score of zero for the exam. During night self-study, Fiona's constantly vibrating phone disturbed the quiet.

Li Dalai seized the opportunity to mock her, claiming she showed no remorse. Cheng Jing stood up for Fiona, while Wei Lai intervened to calm everyone, reminding them that instead of complaining about the class splitting, they should focus on improving their scores. He proposed that if each student earned just two more points, it could compensate for Fiona's zero score in chemistry. Later that night, Fang Xue found a sleepless Fiona sitting alone in the corridor.

Fiona confided that her long-time best friend, Kelly, had abruptly ended their friendship, leaving her deeply upset. Fang Xue offered comfort, reassuring her that true friends don't break up easily and that they would eventually reconcile, advising Fiona to prioritize her upcoming exams. During a subsequent Chinese exam, the essay topic, "A beautiful accident," subtly drew glances toward Er Bao, who buried his head in his desk, silently signaling he was fine.

After the exam, Fang Xue and Wei Lai found Er Bao sitting alone on the rooftop. He finally broke down, revealing his deep-seated struggles. He confessed that his older brother had always been the family's brilliant star, while he felt like a disappointment, even being called a "mutant" by relatives. He had relentlessly pursued higher education to prove he could reach his brother's academic level, who had always been his inspiration and never judged him.

Er Bao mourned his brother's sudden death, lamenting that he was gone without a goodbye, leaving him without a brother and feeling like a "monster" for being in high school for so many years. Fang Xue and Wei Lai offered solace, assuring him that no one viewed him that way. Finally, Mr. Yin entered the classroom with the results, initially adopting a dramatic, melancholic tone about their short time together.

However, Gu Shang and the others quickly saw through his act, prompting him to reveal the outcome. Mr. Yin happily announced that Class 1 Senior 4 had achieved second place in the 5th mock exam, thus confirming the class splitting would be canceled. The classroom erupted in cheers. As a new biology class began in a cheerful atmosphere, students chatted excitedly. Fang Xue's friend shared news that a senior student, who had been crowned the school's most beautiful for three consecutive years, would be returning next week, sparking curiosity among them.

Episode 15 Recap

The results of the fifth mock exam were released, and Wei Lai easily secured the top spot. Students around Fang Xue buzzed with discussions about Wei Lai likely being accepted into Peking University through independent admission, as their school only had two quotas for it. Fang Xue, after checking the rankings, found herself at 206th, feeling disheartened.

Later, sitting at her desk, Fang Xue chatted with Wei Lai, admitting she envied him for getting the chance to take Peking University's independent admission exam, which seemed like an escape from their current academic struggles. Wei Lai downplayed it, saying it only offered a few extra points and the general college entrance exam was still ahead. Soon after, Mr. Yin called Fang Xue to his office.

He acknowledged the recent exam's difficulty but encouraged her not to lose heart, praising her significant progress this semester despite a weaker foundation than some peers. He then presented her with an application form for an independent admission test for minority languages at Beijing International Studies University (BISU). He suggested it as a "guarantee" option, noting her English teacher's praise for her talent and that the minority language field was less competitive, with four available spots for their school.

Fang Xue, however, was hesitant, expressing doubt that such an opportunity would fall to her. Later, she called her dad to discuss it. Her father was thrilled, urging her to seize the "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" and assuring her that interest develops with study. He encouraged her to prepare diligently, believing her good luck had finally begun. Meanwhile, Er Bao was delighted to be on duty with Fiona again.

They chatted, and Fiona revealed her decision that this year would be her last attempt at the college entrance exam; if she didn't get in, she'd pursue other options, possibly abroad. Er Bao was saddened by the thought of her leaving. He then mentioned hearing that Fang Xue was applying for the minority language program, which surprised Fiona. Back in the dorm, Fang Xue's roommates heard the news.

Some were excited for her, urging her to seize the chance to avoid the main college entrance exam's "pain," while others advised her to consider it carefully. Fang Xue herself admitted feeling unsettled, despite having envied Wei Lai for his independent admission opportunity. The next day, the school held a fire drill. Cheng Jing couldn't participate because she was on her period.

Gu Shang, worried about her, skipped the drill himself and secretly followed her to the restroom, where he had a junior deliver his jacket to Cheng Jing. Meanwhile, on the playground, Wei Lai thoughtfully helped Fang Xue adjust her safety helmet, teasing her that she looked silly in it.

After the drill, the principal introduced Yan Zining, a distinguished alumna who was the top science student in the city the previous year, now returning to give a speech and help tutor English. When classmates asked if Wei Lai, the top liberal arts student, knew her, he replied they were "not familiar." Yan Zining then gave a brief, cordial speech. As Wei Lai and Fang Xue walked back to class, Yan Zining caught up to them.

After a brief exchange about her return, she invited Wei Lai to dinner to chat. Wei Lai politely declined, stating he needed to help Fang Xue with her homework. Observing their interaction, Fang Xue felt a mix of complex emotions, especially after Wei Lai had just claimed he and Yan Zining were not familiar. That evening, Fang Xue found Cheng Jing doing laundry.

Fang Xue, still troubled, confided in Cheng Jing, questioning the true relationship between Wei Lai and Yan Zining, especially since Wei Lai claimed they weren't close, yet she'd seen them chatting animatedly. Cheng Jing dismissed her concerns, suggesting they were just classmates. Fang Xue then expressed her insecurity about her own grades, wishing she could be as good at everything as Cheng Jing and their other high-achieving friends. Cheng Jing, however, told her it was best to simply "be yourself."

Fang Xue then wondered if she should still attend the upcoming English tutoring, and Cheng Jing firmly encouraged her to go, telling her not to be a coward. The next day, Fang Xue attended her first minority language class, taught by Yan Zining. She was impressed by Yan Zining's patient correction of students' pronunciation, teaching them common interview phrases.

After class, Yan Zining approached Fang Xue, remarking that Fang Xue needed to improve her pronunciation and offering to provide her with individual tutoring over the next few days. Fang Xue was initially grateful, but her mood shifted when Yan Zining casually added that Wei Lai had asked her to help Fang Xue, emphasizing that "his business is my business."

Yan Zining then asked Fang Xue to relay a message to Wei Lai: Ms. Lei wanted them both to take pictures in front of the school building after school. From her classroom, Fang Xue watched as Wei Lai and Yan Zining posed for photos downstairs. Feeling a surge of irritation, she forcefully shut the window.

After the photoshoot, Yan Zining again invited Wei Lai to dinner, but he quickly declined, saying he had other things to do, and hurried back to the classroom. He approached Fang Xue, offering to help her with her mistakes. However, still fuming, Fang Xue gave him the cold shoulder, dismissing his offer and declaring that she could manage.

When Wei Lai pointed out her poor performance on a recent quiz, she lashed out, sarcastically calling herself a "slow student" and contrasting herself with him and "that Zining," whom she labeled "talents" for whom even Olympiad competitions were easy. When Wei Lai questioned her anger and why she involved others, Fang Xue retorted that Yan Zining was his "old friend."

Earlier, a concerned classmate had warned Fang Xue about Yan Zining, suggesting her "good will" in offering extra tutoring might have ulterior motives, given her existing connection with Wei Lai. Fang Xue, however, had dismissed the warning, determined to continue her studies. Later, in the cafeteria, Yan Zining deliberately approached Wei Lai, engaging him in conversation about her experiences studying abroad and attempting to ingratiate herself, seemingly to provoke Fang Xue. This move infuriated Fang Xue.

After their meal, Yan Zining pressed Wei Lai about Fang Xue, observing his low spirits and asking if they had quarreled. Wei Lai, clearly uninterested in discussing it, simply dismissed her questions as "nothing important" and promptly left, leaving Yan Zining alone and resentful.

After another minority language class, Yan Zining continued her subtle manipulation, telling Fang Xue that she and Wei Lai had known each other for a long time and that he was currently under immense pressure preparing for his Peking University admission test, leaving him little time for her. She also asked Fang Xue about her preparation for the "exam secret" Yan Zining had given her.

Later, on her way back, Fang Xue noticed a large poster featuring Wei Lai and Yan Zining, with other students commenting on how "handsome" and "good-looking" they were and wondering if they would "be in a relationship" if Wei Lai got into Peking University. This sight intensified Fang Xue's unhappiness. Back in class, Wei Lai noticed her distress and tried to talk to her.

He reassured her that Yan Zining was "not even my friend" and he wouldn't waste time on "useless socializing," urging Fang Xue to stop suggesting he and Yan Zining were a perfect match. Fang Xue, still hurt, acknowledged his words. When the minority language exam finally began, Fang Xue entered the oral interview.

The examiner immediately asked her to introduce herself, which Fang Xue struggled with because Yan Zining had told her that self-introductions were not required for this type of exam. She stammered out apologies, admitting she had "misunderstood the scope of the exam." The examiners then grilled her on current events and sensitive topics like the "openness of man-and-woman relationships in western countries," leaving Fang Xue flustered and unable to respond coherently. Her performance was clearly unsatisfactory.

As she left the exam room, she noticed a classmate's study materials which contained exactly the kind of self-introduction prompts and controversial questions that she had just been asked. It was then that Fang Xue realized Yan Zining had deliberately misled her about the exam content. As Fang Xue walked back, she encountered Yan Zining directly. Fang Xue confronted her, demanding to know why she had been given false information about the exam.

Yan Zining initially feigned ignorance and tried to dismiss it as a mere change in exam questions. But as Fang Xue pressed further, Yan Zining's facade crumbled. She arrogantly confessed that her true intention in returning was to assess the "low IQ" of the girl Wei Lai was interested in. She explicitly stated she was acting to "remove the drag" from Wei Lai's side, believing he would eventually thank her for it.

Yan Zining cruelly told Fang Xue that no matter how hard she tried, they were not "the same kind of people," and what Yan Zining couldn't have, Fang Xue wouldn't get either. Meanwhile, Ms. Lei received an anonymous tip alleging that Yan Zining had registered on a "third-rate model website" abroad.

Although Ms. Lei decided not to investigate further as Yan Zining was no longer a student, she instructed staff to remove all of Yan Zining's promotional posters from the bulletin board to contain the scandal. Later, Ms. Lei called Fang Xue to her office to inquire about her exam performance and whether Yan Zining's tutoring was to blame.

Fang Xue, however, chose to protect Yan Zining, attributing her poor results solely to her own inadequate preparation and insisting that everything was "really fine." Back in class, Fang Xue apologized to Wei Lai for her earlier behavior regarding Yan Zining. Wei Lai, relieved, told her not to worry as long as she wasn't wearing a "long face," and they shared a playful moment arguing over who would get the braised pork ribs for dinner.

A few days later, Mr. Yin announced the results of the independent admissions. Wei Lai successfully secured an interview opportunity with Peking University. However, for Fang Xue, it was "quite close," but she had not been admitted. Mr. Yin, while acknowledging her disappointment, highlighted that her English scores had significantly improved. Fang Xue expressed her deep sadness and frustration that despite all her efforts, she hadn't achieved the desired outcome.

Wei Lai comforted her, urging her to view it as a life experience, reminding her that sometimes even with much effort, results don't align with expectations. To cheer her up, Wei Lai then led Fang Xue to the rooftop, revealing a surprise: a newly installed billboard with the encouraging slogan, "Be myself. I can do it." He explained that the simple yet meaningful message reminded him of her resilience and spirit. Fang Xue was visibly moved, acknowledging that he understood her well.

Episode 16 Recap

Mr. Ying called Fang Xue to his office. He handed her Wei Lai's notice of re-examination, asking her to deliver it. To Fang Xue's surprise, Mr. Ying then revealed that she had also passed the minority language enrollment test, clarifying that the third-place student had given up their spot, which Fang Xue received. Overwhelmed with joy and incoherently thanking Mr. Ying, Fang Xue promised to study hard for the re-examination.

Fang Xue excitedly returned to class and handed Wei Lai his re-examination notice, announcing that she too had passed. Wei Lai commented on her luck and urged her to prepare well. Fang Xue, feeling proud of her newfound "good student" status, confirmed that their re-examinations were on the same day in Beijing.

They discussed travel plans; Wei Lai mentioned going with his parents, while Fang Xue explained she'd likely be going alone since her father didn't know about her re-enrollment and she didn't want to trouble her aunt again. At home, Fang Xue was packing, feeling nervous. Her mother initially thought she would accompany Fang Xue and Wei Lai, whom she admired.

However, upon learning that Wei Lai would be traveling alone, Fang Xue's mother changed her mind, deciding that she and Fang Xue's father would stay behind to finish work. She instructed Fang Xue to go with Wei Lai as companions, praising his character and encouraging Fang Xue to be independent. Before Fang Xue left, her mother reminded her to be gentle and considerate towards Wei Lai, and to avoid speaking too loudly.

Fang Xue arrived at the train station, apologizing for being late. When Wei Lai learned that her parents weren't accompanying her, he subtly smiled before they headed to board. They discovered they were in the same carriage but had seats across the aisle. Their animated conversation led a fellow passenger to jokingly call them "lovebirds," which Fang Xue immediately denied. They continued communicating via text messages, while the uncle sitting nearby shook his head in disapproval.

Once the man sitting next to Fang Xue exited the train, Wei Lai quickly moved to her side. They started discussing their plans for Beijing, with Fang Xue expressing her desire to visit the Great Wall, citing it as a must-see landmark. Wei Lai promised to accompany her after their exams. After their exams, Fang Xue asked Wei Lai about his performance, which was "not bad" for both of them.

With time to spare before heading to the Great Wall, they decided to explore the college surroundings. While Wei Lai engrossed himself in a paleontology book, Fang Xue discreetly purchased two popular pendants from a stall, choosing them for their hidden compartment. She then gave one of the pendants to Wei Lai as a souvenir of their Beijing trip, which he gratefully accepted, clearly pleased.

Their journey to the Great Wall was marred by heavy traffic, and they realized their wallets had been stolen at a street market earlier. With only eighty yuan between them, they decided to press on, determined to visit the Great Wall. However, after a desperate run, they found that the last bus to the Great Wall would not get them there before closing time. Disappointed, they opted to explore a park instead.

There, two elderly men approached them, offering to take them to the Great Wall. Excited, Fang Xue and Wei Lai accepted, only to be led to an exhibition hall showcasing models of the Great Wall, including Shanhai Pass, Jiayu Pass, and Juyong Pass. After an awkward exchange with a staff member who explained the exhibits were for display, not for sale, they decided to explore on their own.

As they left, the same two elderly men were still there and kindly offered them a ride to the train station. Gu Shang and Cheng Jing met for a boxing match, both claiming they had reservations. While waiting, a man behind Cheng Jing acted inappropriately, touching her. Cheng Jing confronted him, and Gu Shang immediately intervened, knocking the man down and continuing to assault him until onlookers pulled him away.

The incident led to both Gu Shang and Cheng Jing being taken to the police station for questioning. During their interrogation about their relationship, Gu Shang openly admitted to liking Cheng Jing, much to her annoyance. After being released, Gu Shang joked about their quick release. Cheng Jing then playfully accused him of being "Bottle Cap" from an online forum, an identity he admitted to despite it being a female persona, defending his choice by remarking on her username, "Whirlwind."

Cheng Jing, angered, walked away, and Gu Shang hurried to catch up with her. During a biology class, Mr. Ying announced the good news: Wei Lai had passed the exam for Peking University and received an extra 20 points, and Fang Xue had also successfully passed the minority language exam. Classmates congratulated Fang Xue, but she seemed somewhat stunned, admitting to Wei Lai that she was surprised and not entirely unhappy about being admitted to a second-tier university.

Later, in the dorm, as Fang Xue packed her belongings, her roommates expressed their sorrow at her departure, hugging her tightly and crying, reluctant to let her go. Fang Xue shared a moment of doubt, feeling as though she was "running away in face of a battle," but confirmed her decision to leave. She tearfully bid her friends goodbye and reluctantly departed with her luggage.

Fang Xue's family joyfully celebrated her admission, with her parents enthusiastically planning for numerous relatives and neighbors to visit and learn from her success. Feeling overwhelmed by the attention and the premature celebration, Fang Xue expressed her frustration, stating that her admission wasn't a "famous university" achievement, and retreated to her room. Soon after, her mother informed her that Wei Lai was on the phone.

Wei Lai, calling Fang Xue at home, used the pretext of offering physics notes to check in on her. He sensed her indecision and directly asked if she genuinely liked minority languages. Fang Xue confessed her indifference, feeling she had no choice in the matter. Wei Lai shared his own experience of being pressured into studying finance and his subsequent regret, urging her not to make a decision she might later regret.

He reminded her of her fearless spirit, joking about how she once caused a commotion at school, implying that facing the college entrance exam shouldn't faze her. He then said goodbye, as he had to go to his night self-study session. The following day, Fang Xue gathered her family to announce her decision: she intended to forgo the minority language program and instead take the regular college entrance exam.

Her parents reacted with shock and strong disapproval, unable to comprehend why she would give up such a hard-won opportunity. Fang Xue calmly explained that her time learning about minority languages confirmed her dislike for it and that while a good college wasn't guaranteed through the general exam, she wanted to pursue what she truly liked and avoid future regrets. Her mother expressed fears of her taking a wrong step and ending up like them.

However, Fang Xue’s grandfather intervened, sharing his own regret about not pursuing blacksmithing in his youth. He emphasized the importance of supporting Fang Xue's decision, especially since it was a difficult one for her to make. With her grandfather's backing, Fang Xue's parents eventually relented, agreeing to support her choice. After night self-study, Wei Lai was reviewing notes with a sense of weariness when Fang Xue returned to the classroom, immediately lifting his spirits.

He teasingly asked if she was worried about missing her opportunity, to which Fang Xue confidently responded, echoing his earlier words about her fearless nature and readiness for the college entrance exam. Wei Lai then handed her a thick stack of meticulously organized notes he had prepared, covering new key points.

Although Fang Xue feigned regret at the daunting amount of material, Wei Lai firmly told her it was too late to change her mind and instructed her to stay by his side and study hard for the next two months. When she expressed concern about catching up with the new material, Wei Lai reassured her that he would personally tutor her.

Episode 17 Recap

In the classroom, Fang Xue and Wei Lai were engrossed in their studies when Tang Tiantian entered mysteriously with a book, declaring her intention to predict Fang Xue's fortune. After a quick calculation, Tang Tiantian dramatically announced that Fang Xue would experience six months of bad luck, a prediction Fang Xue readily believed.

Cheng Jing then approached, joining their conversation, and they soon discovered that her birthday was only two days after Fang Xue's, on December 23rd, while Fang Xue's was on December 21st. Cheng Jing, however, mentioned she wasn't in the habit of celebrating birthdays. Fang Xue also expressed regret that she couldn't celebrate hers at school. Tang Tiantian then advised them to put away the book before a teacher noticed.

That weekend, Fang Xue and Cheng Jing took the bus home together. Before parting ways, with Fang Xue opting for a shortcut, Fang Xue advised Cheng Jing not to reject her mother's offerings of snacks and fruits, suggesting Cheng Jing was simply eager to eat them herself. Cheng Jing retorted playfully that it was Fang Xue who coveted the treats, to which Fang Xue insisted she wasn't that desperate.

After this lighthearted exchange, Fang Xue took her shortcut, and they bid each other farewell. Upon Cheng Jing's arrival home, a neighbor, Auntie, greeted her, but her words quickly turned into gossip, accusing Cheng Jing's mother of earning money from men to support her education. She claimed men were constantly coming and going from their home, especially when Cheng Jing was away, implying her mother was reckless. Cheng Jing immediately confronted the Auntie, questioning her meaning.

Another neighbor stepped in, urging the gossiping Auntie to stop talking nonsense to the child, but the Auntie insisted she had witnessed it herself and wouldn't tolerate such behavior affecting her quality of life. Entering her home, Cheng Jing overheard a man's voice and, influenced by the neighbor's words, already harbored suspicions. She then saw her mother receive money from the man, further deepening her misunderstanding.

The man was identified by her mother as her father's old comrade, expressing gratitude for his help in finding her a new job. Cheng Jing angrily cut her mother off, refusing to discuss her father, and stormed out of the house. Outside, Cheng Jing observed a father lovingly feeding his child, a sight that stirred a deep sadness within her.

She recalled her own father, who would buy her milk daily and even insert the straw for her because he thought she was too young. Since his passing, no one had shown her such tender care. Feeling heartbroken, Cheng Jing sought solace at Fang Xue's house. Fang Xue, opening the door to a tearful Cheng Jing, immediately pulled her inside, offering comfort and asking what was wrong.

Cheng Jing confided that she missed her father and had argued with her mother again. Fang Xue patiently listened and encouraged her to return home, believing her mother might be waiting with a warm meal. Cheng Jing returned home, where her mother had indeed prepared a meal. During dinner, her mother asked what time she would return to school, expressing concern about the last bus.

Cheng Jing, feeling pushed away, sarcastically asked if her mother was anxious for her to leave. Upset, she declared she was full and left the table to pack her bags for school. Her mother, worried she hadn't eaten enough, quickly gave her two packets of cookies before she left. Later, while eating noodles outside, Cheng Jing noticed her mother leaving home alone, acting unusually. Suspecting something, Cheng Jing secretly followed her to a dance hall.

At the entrance, a guard tried to stop Cheng Jing, but an older man explained that the venue was for dancing, and many patrons were not accompanied by their wives, implying a less reputable nature. This discovery intensified Cheng Jing's resentment towards her mother. Back at school, Cheng Jing, still fuming, slammed her bag onto her desk, startling Gu Shang. He remarked on her early return, which she attributed to having nothing else to do.

Observing her recent dedication to studies, Gu Shang joked about her ambition to get into Peking University or Tsinghua. Cheng Jing affirmed her goal, stating fiercely that she would not only achieve admission but also earn a scholarship, as she could only rely on herself now. Gu Shang, sensing her unusual intensity, asked if she was okay, but Cheng Jing brushed it off.

Later that evening, as Fang Xue and Cheng Jing returned to their dormitory, they were surprised to find Cheng Jing's mother inside. She had brought Cheng Jing's forgotten wallet, which also contained her ID card. Cheng Jing immediately told her mother to go home, despite Fang Xue's attempt to offer her water. Her mother tried to give her some money for school supplies and snacks, but Cheng Jing adamantly refused.

The argument escalated when her mother tried to take down a dirty curtain to wash it, but Cheng Jing shouted at her not to touch her belongings. Her mother, hurt, expressed her frustration at Cheng Jing treating her like an enemy, reminding her of all she had provided. Cheng Jing retorted that her mother was educated and capable, while she herself was not, declaring her mother unworthy. Distraught, her mother left the dormitory.

Fang Xue, concerned, asked Cheng Jing if she was alright. Later that night, Fang Xue's dorm mates chatted about their past birthday experiences. Tang Tiantian and Fiona recounted stories of family photoshoots and thoughtful gifts, making Cheng Jing feel envious as her parents had never given her a "normal" birthday celebration. The next day, while on duty together, Gu Shang asked Cheng Jing about her upcoming birthday and what gift she might like.

Cheng Jing reiterated her lack of a birthday tradition, but as Gu Shang continued to probe, she secretly smiled, a hint of anticipation surfacing. Meanwhile, Gu Shang and Wei Lai spoke with Er Bao, the school's long-time resident, inquiring about where to watch TV. Er Bao directed them to the main building's electric classroom. Wei Lai then asked Er Bao about special gifts students had given over the years.

Er Bao mentioned a school legend: if someone sees fireworks from their dorm window at midnight on their birthday, their wishes will come true. Wei Lai, inspired, decided to arrange a surprise for Fang Xue. He had a friend procure fireworks, but the friend arrived late, having only managed to get a single, small firework, complaining about the difficulty. Wei Lai accepted it, planning to make the best of it.

During night self-study, Wei Lai subtly asked Fang Xue about her bedtime. He then instructed her to look out her window at midnight, hinting at a "meteor shower," implying a surprise. At midnight, Fang Xue stood by her window, eagerly anticipating the spectacle. However, Wei Lai's carefully planned surprise fizzled out as the fireworks turned out to be shoddy products, failing to ignite. Disappointed, Wei Lai abandoned the duds and left.

Meanwhile, Gu Shang and Cheng Jing were in the electric classroom, engrossed in watching a boxing match. Cheng Jing thanked Gu Shang for bringing her, reflecting on how this was a rare happy day during their Senior 4 year. Gu Shang revealed his intention to celebrate her birthday in advance, as her actual birthday was in two days and no one had celebrated it before.

Cheng Jing was momentarily startled by what sounded like fireworks outside, but they quickly returned their attention to the match. Gu Shang then offered to get fried chicken and coke, and left the room. Soon after, the gatekeeper arrived and locked the security door, trapping Cheng Jing inside. Outside, Gu Shang returned to find the area around the electric classroom on fire. He frantically tried to open the security door, but it was impenetrable.

He pounded, kicked, and rammed against it, but it wouldn't budge. The smoke intensified inside, prompting Cheng Jing to urge Gu Shang to leave for his own safety. He refused, vowing to stay with her and calling 119 for help. Gu Shang then found a rope, passed one end under the door, and instructed Cheng Jing to hold it, promising to pull it if anything happened, and to call out his name.

As the smoke thickened, Cheng Jing again urged him to leave, but Gu Shang vehemently refused, insisting they would face it together and would only leave if she did. To pass the terrifying wait, Gu Shang suggested they talk. He lightheartedly compared their situation to the couple on the Titanic, eliciting a grim response from Cheng Jing that they were drowning, while they were likely to burn to death. Gu Shang quickly changed the topic, playing a question-and-answer game.

When asked her favorite color, Cheng Jing replied "red," but then playfully admonished him to say something auspicious after his follow-up question. Gu Shang then confessed he thought she was fearless, to which Cheng Jing surprisingly replied that she was quite afraid of Wei Lai, particularly of him surpassing her in exams. Gu Shang, in a moment of vulnerability, expressed his hurt that she would praise another boy in front of him, asking why she never praised him.

Cheng Jing simply thanked him. Then, she opened up, revealing her deep-seated trust issues stemming from her mother oversleeping and causing her to miss her college entrance exam last year. She declared that, from that day forward, she was willing to trust him. Gu Shang, who had been listening intently from outside, fainted in tears during her heartfelt confession. Cheng Jing called out his name, but received no response.

Panicked, Cheng Jing repeatedly tugged the rope and called out to him, but silence met her pleas. Tears streaming down her face, she desperately pounded on the door and screamed his name. Finally, the door was forced open, and firefighters entered to escort Cheng Jing out. Seeing Gu Shang unconscious on the ground, Cheng Jing struggled against her rescuers, desperate to reach him. At the hospital, Cheng Jing regained consciousness and immediately asked about Gu Shang.

She was relieved to hear from a nurse that he was fine and would likely be moved to a regular ward the next day. News of the fire spread through the school, with students discussing the severity of the incident and the potential legal consequences for the person responsible.

Wei Lai, looking pensive after hearing the school broadcast about the fire investigation, suggested to Fang Xue that they ask their teacher for leave to visit Cheng Jing and Gu Shang at the hospital. Fang Xue agreed. Fang Xue and Wei Lai rushed to the hospital, with Fang Xue growing impatient with the taxi driver's speed and his loud radio. Upon arriving, they found Cheng Jing smiling, indicating she was recovering.

Cheng Jing explained that her test results were not yet back, but she felt fine, though Gu Shang required more treatment. Suddenly, Cheng Jing's mother burst into the room, relieved to see her daughter safe. She gently gave Cheng Jing some food and expressed her love, though not without humorously threatening to "settle accounts" with her for their previous argument once she was discharged.

Cheng Jing's mother then confided that she knew Cheng Jing harbored resentment for her past inattention, especially regarding the fire. She explained that she always saw Cheng Jing as a "child made of iron" – strong, healthy, and self-sufficient, never needing to be worried about. This heartfelt admission softened Cheng Jing's heart, and the old tension between them began to dissipate. As her mother left to dispose of some trash, she was overcome with emotion and broke down crying.

The school announced a full investigation into the fire in the main building, stating that while there were no major casualties, it was a rare and serious incident. They urged anyone with information to come forward. Wei Lai, hearing the broadcast, appeared lost in thought. Meanwhile, Cheng Jing, recuperating at home, returned to the dance hall where she had followed her mother. To her astonishment, she found her mother working there as a cleaner.

Her mother explained that she had been laid off from her previous company due to her lack of education, and that her father's comrade had helped her secure this cleaning job. Cheng Jing, realizing the depth of her misunderstanding and her mother's sacrifices, was overcome with emotion. Mother and daughter embraced, crying together, their long-standing rift finally healed. Wei Lai was later addressed, with someone asking him a question.

Episode 18 Recap

Fang Xue approached Wei Lai, asking about the night of the fire and if he had noticed anything unusual. Wei Lai, feeling guilty and imagining the bleak consequences if caught, feigned ignorance, claiming he had simply wanted her to see shooting stars for her birthday and advised her to go rest. Cheng Jing was discharged from the hospital and returned to class. Classmates welcomed her and eagerly asked about Gu Shang's condition.

Cheng Jing explained that Gu Shang was more severely injured and would return in a few days, but assured everyone he would be fine. During lunch, the conversation turned to the fire, with students mentioning that Gu Shang was now a suspect. Cheng Jing clarified that she had been locked in the multimedia classroom by the gatekeeper when the fire started, and Gu Shang had been out buying food, so it couldn't have been him.

She expressed sadness that Gu Shang would face an investigation upon his return. Hearing this, Wei Lai felt a pang of conscience and abruptly left the cafeteria to seek out books on fire and explosion technology in the library. Back in his dormitory, Wei Lai made a phone call to Gu Shang, inquiring about his recovery. He then confessed that the fire might be related to him because he was setting off fireworks downstairs that night.

Gu Shang, initially joking about Wei Lai causing his troubles, quickly offered to take the blame to protect Wei Lai's secret about re-enrolling in high school. Wei Lai, however, declined the generous offer, resolute in his decision to take responsibility for his own actions. The next day, Wei Lai went to Ms Lei's office and admitted he was the one who started the fire. He explained that he had set off fireworks, and sparks might have inadvertently caused the blaze.

When asked why, he claimed to be bored with dormitory life and simply looking for some fun, having bought fireworks to play with in his dorm. Ms Lei was visibly shocked and reprimanded him for such a serious and irresponsible act. Unbeknownst to them, Li Dalai was standing just outside the door, overhearing their entire conversation. As Wei Lai exited the office, Fang Xue stopped him, expressing concern about his recent strange behavior.

Before he could respond, a furious Li Dalai rushed out, loudly accusing Wei Lai of being the arsonist and announcing that he would face punishment. Fang Xue immediately understood the reason for Wei Lai's odd conduct. After Li Dalai left, Fang Xue directly confronted Wei Lai, asking if he had set off the fireworks because he wanted her to see them that night.

Wei Lai quickly denied it, telling her not to flatter herself and insisting he did it for his own amusement. At lunchtime, Wei Lai found himself ostracized and ridiculed by his classmates, who called him a "fire-setter" and compared him to the historical figure who lit warning beacons for amusement. Even the cafeteria staff gave him disapproving looks. Unwilling to offer any explanations, Wei Lai quietly left the cafeteria.

In the school office, the principal, Ms Lei, and Mr. Ying discussed the fire. Mr. Ying suggested handling the matter internally, citing Wei Lai's adulthood and the unclear circumstances. However, Ms Lei argued that Wei Lai had already confessed, and the school had suffered significant damage, including blackened walls, burned furniture, and expensive computers, totaling tens of thousands of yuan in losses. The principal decided they would contact Wei Lai's parents to assess the damages and arrange for compensation.

Ms Lei then called Wei Lai's parents, and during the conversation, she made a startling discovery: all of Wei Lai's enrollment documents were fake, including his father's signature. Enraged, Ms Lei summoned Wei Lai and severely criticized him for deceiving the school about his true identity and how he paid his tuition using his savings and living expenses. She also questioned if Mr. Ying had been complicit in the cover-up, but Wei Lai quickly defended his teacher, taking full responsibility.

Ms Lei informed him that his father, currently on a business trip, would visit the school next week, and Wei Lai would have to explain everything himself. Later, Wei Lai called Gu Shang, confirming that his father was now aware of his re-enrollment through Ms Lei's call, though his father hadn't directly contacted him yet. Gu Shang offered his home as a hiding place, but Wei Lai felt it was pointless, as his father knew everything.

Meanwhile, in class, students continued to gossip about Wei Lai's situation. Suddenly, Li Dalai burst into the classroom, excitedly announcing that the fire investigation concluded the blaze was caused by aging classroom equipment, not by arson. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief for Wei Lai, but Wei Lai, instead of joining the celebration, rushed out to find Mr. Ying.

Wei Lai explained to Mr. Ying that his father knew about his re-enrollment and would be coming to the school after his business trip. He requested a leave of absence to avoid the inevitable confrontation. Mr. Ying, though handing him the leave form, cautioned Wei Lai, reminding him that as a 20-year-old, he should face his problems head-on rather than run from them, especially since he hadn't properly communicated with his family about his decision to re-enroll.

Wei Lai, now holding the leave form, found Fang Xue and informed her of his plan to leave for a few days to hide at a friend's house before his father arrived. Fang Xue became distraught, pleading with him not to go. She worried he might drop out and they would never see each other again, suggesting they could find a solution together.

Witnessing her distress and tears, Wei Lai was deeply moved and firmly promised her that he would not leave. Fang Xue then smiled through her tears. The next day, Wei Lai, still anxious, tried to calm himself by listening to music, encouraged by Fang Xue. Suddenly, his father stormed into the school, demanding to know which class Wei Lai was in. He burst into the classroom, angrily confronting Wei Lai about dropping out of college without his permission.

Fang Xue attempted to intervene, but Wei Lai's father brusquely dismissed her, calling her a disrespectful and uncultivated girl, and accusing her of influencing Wei Lai's decision to re-enroll. Despite Fang Xue's desperate look for him to speak, Wei Lai remained silent, head bowed. His father then forcefully dragged him out of the classroom and took him home, where he locked Wei Lai in his room.

He instructed Wei Lai's stepmother, who was also locked in the room, not to let Wei Lai out, even telling her to starve him. At school, some of Wei Lai's admirers blamed Fang Xue for his abrupt departure, calling her a troublemaker and a jinx. In her dormitory, Fang Xue's roommates tried to comfort her, but she remained despondent, lying silently on her bed.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Gu Shang gave Cheng Jing some traditional Chinese medicine for her throat, sent by his mother. Cheng Jing confided that Fang Xue was deeply upset after Wei Lai's father's harsh words. They both mused on the recent string of difficult events, expressing a hope that things would improve as they had "hit rock bottom." At home, Wei Lai engaged in a heated argument with his father about his career path.

His father vehemently criticized Wei Lai's chosen major, paleontology, deeming it inferior to finance, and demanded Wei Lai return home and study abroad, but Wei Lai refused. He continued to insult Fang Xue, calling her a "country girl" and accusing Wei Lai of learning bad things from her, asserting his authority as the head of the family. When Wei Lai attempted to leave the house, his father again locked him in his room.

Wei Lai's stepmother, also locked in the room, found a small note hidden inside Wei Lai's phone charm while fiddling with it out of boredom. Wei Lai, surprised, took the note to the bathroom. Reading its contents, which stated, "On this long road, I think we are friends. If there are expectations, I think it's best not to speak them," a wave of warmth washed over him.

He smiled, before his eyes welled up with tears as he reminisced about his moments with Fang Xue. At the same time, Fang Xue wept in her dormitory, missing Wei Lai. The following day, Wei Lai desperately tried to escape his room by tearing his bedsheets into strips and tying them together to climb from the balcony.

However, the makeshift rope failed to support his weight and broke, causing him to fall to the ground, leaving him injured and unable to move his legs. Wei Lai's stepmother, hearing the commotion, panicked and frantically called for help, shouting that Wei Lai had jumped.

Episode 19 Recap

During a chemistry lesson, the students were noticeably dispirited, preoccupied by recent events. The chemistry teacher sternly reprimanded the class for their lack of focus, prompting Li Dalai to talk back. After class, Li Dalai returned the notes he had borrowed from Wei Lai, then questioned Fang Xue about Wei Lai's prolonged absence. Meanwhile, at his home, Wei Lai, still confined to his room, secretly reviewed study materials when his stepmother entered with some fruit.

She remarked on his previous confidence, noting that now he couldn't run away even if his father didn't lock him up. Wei Lai brushed off her sarcasm, and she urged him to hide his books before his father returned, fearing another outburst if his father saw he hadn't given up on school. Wei Lai, however, declared he couldn't be bothered, leading his stepmother to comment on their shared stubbornness.

Back at school, Mr. Ying, observing the class's low morale, decided to uplift everyone by organizing a "Rooftop Confession Time" for the upcoming weekend, where students could shout out their innermost thoughts. He encouraged them to prepare what they wanted to say. During lunch, Tang Tiantian and other friends discussed their potential confessions, while Fang Xue stood lost in thought, barely touching her food.

Noticing her distant behavior, her friends tried to engage her, asking if she had decided what to shout. Fang Xue mumbled, still seeming preoccupied by Wei Lai's absence, which her friends attributed to his family problems. Fang Xue then excused herself and left. Later, in Mr. Ying's office, he spoke to Fang Xue about her recent chemistry quiz, which she had failed completely.

Fang Xue admitted her long-standing struggles with chemistry and Mr. Ying suggested she seek help from Wei Lai, then remembered Wei Lai was not at school. He advised her to practice more and ask other teachers or classmates for help. Mr. Ying also noted her change in demeanor, advising her to adjust and reorganize her thoughts, as he understood what she was going through. Elsewhere, Qiao Mai was confronted by the same individual who had previously blackmailed her.

The blackmailer demanded she recite legal articles, threatening to expose her cheating to her teachers, classmates, and parents, including details about how she, a top student, entered the school using illicit means, thereby successfully coercing her. That evening, Fang Xue and Cheng Jing overheard other students discussing Wei Lai's potential withdrawal from school, mistakenly attributing it to Fang Xue. Angered by their gossip, Cheng Jing threw something against the partition, silencing the students.

Returning to their dorm, Cheng Jing found Fang Xue despondent. She urged Fang Xue to snap out of her melancholy, reminding her that life goes on even if Wei Lai leaves. Cheng Jing advised Fang Xue to focus on the upcoming "Rooftop Confession Time" as a way to uplift herself. The next day, Fang Xue showed Cheng Jing her draft for the rooftop confession, which still heavily revolved around Wei Lai.

Cheng Jing, frustrated by Fang Xue's lack of progress, called her sentimental and embarrassed, telling her that Wei Lai's departure was a reality she couldn't change and angrily demanded she rewrite it. That night, Fang Xue stood alone on the rooftop, recalling Wei Lai's past words about a simple slogan being meaningful and how it suited her for cheering herself up.

On the weekend, Mr. Ying led the students to the main building's rooftop for the confession event, attracting curious students from other classes. Ms Lei provided lozenges for everyone's voices. After an energetic start by Mr. Ying, who passionately declared his ambition to be the best teacher and recounted losing his girlfriend to a film director, other students followed, sharing their aspirations, from getting into a technical college to attending USC.

When it was Qiao Mai's turn, she bravely confessed that her high grades were fake, obtained through cheating, driven by vanity and the intense pressure from her family and school. She admitted to hating studying and exams, feeling that such a life was too tiring, unlike Wei Lai's excellent path. Her classmates showed support and encouraged her.

Next, Gu Shang, known for not loving studies, dedicated a somewhat off-key rendition of "Loving You Is Not Just for Two or Three Days" to Cheng Jing, which quickly turned into a boisterous chant for them to "get together." The commotion was cut short by the sudden arrival of Ms Lei, causing everyone to scatter. Gu Shang was caught and brought to her office.

Meanwhile, Qiao Mai faced a fellow student who criticized her for revealing the truth about her cheating and mentioning Wei Lai. Later, Fang Xue found Qiao Mai silently washing her face and offered comfort, assuring her that many people cheat and that repentance was key. Fang Xue shared her own experiences of overcoming difficulties, telling Qiao Mai that classmates would not judge her unfairly.

In a chemistry class following the rooftop event, the teacher called Qiao Mai to the board to solve a problem. Despite having personally reviewed similar questions with her, Qiao Mai made a mistake. The teacher harshly criticized and mocked her, calling her a "wrong example" and suggesting her brain was not working. She publicly shamed Qiao Mai, linking her current struggles to her past cheating and calling her a "C- student" who somehow got "A+ scores."

Overwhelmed by the public humiliation, Qiao Mai erupted in anger, smashing items in the classroom before running into the corridor and breaking a glass panel. Her classmates rushed out, horrified to see her covered in blood before she collapsed to the ground. That night, Fang Xue and her dormmates discussed Qiao Mai's incident, expressing shock and sympathy.

They reflected on the immense pressure of senior year, acknowledging that Qiao Mai's constant worry about rankings and family expectations had led her to cheat. Some also recalled observing Qiao Mai being pushed and shoved by an external student, which they now understood in light of her struggles.

The next day, Mr. Ying informed Fang Xue that Qiao Mai would not be returning to school due to her condition, and her parents believed she would likely miss the college entrance exams. Mr. Ying expressed deep regret and self-blame for not noticing her struggles sooner, entrusting Fang Xue to help reassure their classmates.

At the hospital, Fang Xue tried to give the nurse some audio tapes she had recorded, hoping they would help Qiao Mai, as they used to comfort Fang Xue herself when she was upset. The nurse was hesitant, citing Qiao Mai's unstable emotional state, but Mr. Ying encouraged her to try.

However, when the nurse played a tape, it was Fang Xue's own voice discussing "activity flow" and the "periodic table" before she became flustered and rushed to the toilet, embarrassed. Later, Fang Xue told Mr. Ying that she understood Qiao Mai's fragility, describing her life as a "sandwich" crushed between bogus grades and pressure from family and school, leaving her unable to find herself, emphasizing that people should live more freely.

Fang Xue also agreed to deliver Wei Lai's report card to him during the break. Meanwhile, Ms Lei conducted separate interviews with Gu Shang and Cheng Jing about the rooftop incident. Gu Shang, to protect Cheng Jing, took full responsibility, claiming he had feelings for Cheng Jing and harassed her on his own, instructing her not to tell anyone, despite Ms Lei's attempts to make Cheng Jing implicate him.

Later, Cheng Jing received Gu Shang's written reflection, where he detailed his actions and confessed his feelings. She reacted with anger and frustration, then stormed off. Another day in class, Tang Tiantian informed Fang Xue that Wei Lai had broken his leg attempting to climb over a wall to return to school. She also revealed that Wei Lai was soon to go abroad, with his visa almost ready, and might never return.

Fang Xue, after a brief pause, acknowledged the news. Later, Fang Xue went to Wei Lai's house. Standing downstairs, she bravely called out to him, pouring out her heart, expressing how she had initially been angry at him for leaving, but now realized she had misjudged him. She told him that he was an outstanding person in her heart and would have a bright future, regardless of where he went or what he studied.

Tears streamed down her face as she spoke, and she ended her emotional confession, saying she would miss him, before walking away choked with emotion. Inside, Wei Lai sat on his balcony, deep in thought, looking at a note, seemingly oblivious to Fang Xue's heartfelt shouts due to the headphones he was wearing.

Episode 20 Recap

Wei Lai sat alone on the balcony. His stepmother, Aunt Zhao, brought him Fang Xue's exam scores that had been left at the door. She asked about his leg, which was much better and he could walk, though he still needed to apply the medicine his father had brought from abroad. Aunt Zhao advised Wei Lai not to argue with his father that night, reminding him that despite his father's stern words, he worried deeply.

That evening at dinner, Wei Lai's father was preoccupied with an important work contract, emphasizing the difficulty of earning money. Wei Lai, not eating, then declared his continued desire to take the College Entrance Exam. He proposed that if he failed to get into a paleontology program, he would then agree to study abroad. His father became angry, seeing through Wei Lai's attempt to avoid going overseas.

He questioned if he was harming Wei Lai by wanting him to be a "superior person" and expressed frustration that Wei Lai refused the path he had paved. Wei Lai retorted, stating he never wanted to be like his father, who was constantly focused on making and spending money and "tricking" clients. He declared he would never want such success. His stepmother tried to mediate, but Wei Lai insisted on his stance.

His father, enraged, warned Wei Lai that if he took another step out, he would never be allowed back home. Overwhelmed by anger, Wei Lai's father, who had a heart condition, collapsed. His stepmother called for an ambulance. At the hospital, the doctor informed them that Wei Lai's father was out of danger but needed observation, advising them to rest and eat.

Aunt Zhao told Wei Lai that his father was fortunate to avoid serious complications but needed to avoid stress. Wei Lai apologized for causing trouble, but Aunt Zhao reassured him, revealing that his father had always kept his struggles secret, including a past suicide attempt after their family went bankrupt, when he put sleeping pills in a cake. She also expressed her rational support for Wei Lai's decisions but cautioned that continued conflict could tear their family apart.

After she left to check on his father, Wei Lai broke down, pleading for his father to recover. Later, Wei Lai brought soup to his father's bedside. Unable to bear his father getting sick again, Wei Lai finally agreed to study abroad but asked for time to choose a university, a request his father accepted. The next day at school, Tang Tiantian appeared distraught, telling Fang Xue that Wang Ziqi was leaving for Beijing that afternoon for exam relocation.

Fang Xue expressed surprise at the sudden news, mentioning that Wei Lai had also left. Just then, Wei Lai entered the classroom, much to Fang Xue's delight. She asked if he had convinced his father and if he was still leaving, to which Wei Lai reassured her not to worry. He then affectionately ruffled her hair and asked if she had any questions from her assignments. Fang Xue admitted she had many and was waiting for him to help.

In Ms. Lei's office, Wei Lai processed his arrangements for studying abroad, discussing the need for a reference letter from Mr. Ying. Ms. Lei expressed regret at losing an excellent student but saw studying abroad as a good option, urging him to return and serve the country after his studies. Li Dalai secretly observed Wei Lai in Ms. Lei's office from outside the door.

Later, to spend more time with Fang Xue, Wei Lai swapped his on-duty day to clean the classroom with her, and they worked playfully. During lunch, Li Dalai asked the cafeteria aunt to give Wei Lai an extra portion of shredded pork with garlic sauce, claiming Wei Lai loved it.

The aunt insisted on fairness, but Li Dalai, claiming it was a special situation, ended up taking his own portion and adding it to Wei Lai's plate, despite Wei Lai's protests. Other students gossiped, misunderstanding Li Dalai's actions as an attempt to curry favor. In chemistry class, Wei Lai was distracted, gazing at Fang Xue.

The teacher, noticing his inattention, sarcastically rebuked him for missing classes and not working hard, asking if he thought Tsinghua University was run by his family. Li Dalai defended Wei Lai, telling the teacher to be more polite as Wei Lai's future social status might far exceed his own, and to leave him with good memories. The infuriated teacher ordered Li Dalai to see Mr. Ying.

After class, Tang Tiantian approached Fang Xue, confirming Wang Ziqi's departure that evening and asking for help to fold paper stars with written messages for him before dinner. Fang Xue agreed. Wei Lai then invited Fang Xue to review valence concepts after dinner, offering to explain everything in 30 minutes. Fang Xue declined, explaining she had to help Tang Tiantian. Li Dalai, overhearing, also tried to persuade Fang Xue to prioritize Wei Lai, but Fang Xue remained firm.

Wei Lai then told her it was fine to go help Tang Tiantian. In the dorm, while folding stars, Tang Tiantian explained she wanted to tie a "knot" in her feelings as a "sense of ritual." Fang Xue suggested writing song lyrics or poems on the papers. Li Dalai later sought out Wei Lai, asking if he would directly tell Fang Xue about his departure.

Wei Lai realized Li Dalai already knew, having overheard him in the office, and thanked him for his discretion. Wei Lai offered Li Dalai his study guides and notes, which he couldn't take with him. Li Dalai expressed sympathy, saying he felt stifled for Wei Lai and had hoped he could follow his own desires. He admitted that Wei Lai, Fang Xue, and Gu Shang likely viewed him as a snob who picked on the weak and feared the strong.

Li Dalai stated he was utilitarian and valued efficiency, adding that he admired Wei Lai the most in Senior 4 and only respected and supported the strong. He asked Wei Lai again if he was truly giving up paleontology for studying abroad, which Wei Lai confirmed. Reflecting on Wei Lai's previous decision to leave economics for paleontology, Li Dalai said he now understood Wei Lai's "bold but capable" nature, believing Wei Lai would succeed in anything.

He concluded by wishing Wei Lai well and a safe journey. During biology class, Mr. Ying was teaching plant tissue culture. Fang Xue and several classmates asked to be excused to accompany Tang Tiantian to send off Wang Ziqi, fabricating a reason to go to the bathroom. Mr. Ying, understanding their emotional need, allowed them to go, promising to cover for them. Li Dalai also joined the group.

Outside, Tang Tiantian ran after Wang Ziqi's departing car with the folded stars. She tripped, scattering the stars. Dejected, she froze. Fang Xue picked up a fallen star, began reading the poem written on it aloud, and continued chasing the car, with others following suit. Inside the car, Wang Ziqi, deeply touched, waved goodbye, promising to "See you in Beijing."

Later, Fang Xue remarked on Tang Tiantian's bravery and expressed her surprise at how quickly the year had passed, feeling reluctant to part ways with her classmates. That night, Fang Xue and Wei Lai were on duty. Fang Xue, unaware of Wei Lai's impending departure, told him to leave first while she finished up. Wei Lai said "Goodbye," and Fang Xue cheerfully replied, "See you tomorrow. Don't stay too late. Remember to turn off the lights. Bye."

Only after leaving the building did Fang Xue realize Wei Lai's farewell had been unusually final. When she returned, the classroom was empty. The next morning, Fang Xue arrived early and found a note from Wei Lai. Before she could read it, other students entered, forcing her to hide it. Later, on the rooftop, Fang Xue read Wei Lai's letter. He apologized for leaving without a proper goodbye, explaining he couldn't change his father's mind and had to study abroad.

He confessed he had asked Mr. Ying to keep his departure a secret, calling it his "last capricious behavior," to spare her sadness and ensure their last day together was happy. Wei Lai wrote that even though they had known each other for less than a year, Fang Xue had made everything interesting. He admitted he initially saw his year in Senior 4 as a mere stepping stone but was grateful for the friends he made.

He promised to take the sleeves she gave him abroad for cleaning, as they would remind him of her. While not expecting her to remember him forever, he hoped she would get into her dream university and live a life she loved. He reminded her about the valence notes he had organized for her on the back shelf and urged her to read them.

Wei Lai expressed a wish for their happy times to continue endlessly and hoped she would always retain her "fearless spirit" and "light-hearted laughter." He concluded with "Thank you, Fang Xue. Goodbye." As Fang Xue finished reading, she was heartbroken, struggling to suppress her tears, which flowed uncontrollably. Witnessing Fang Xue's distress, Cheng Jing angrily called Wei Lai.

She lambasted him for his "romantic" but cruel farewell letter, accusing him of being "mean" for leaving Fang Xue with so much sadness. Wei Lai asked about Fang Xue's well-being, but Cheng Jing angrily retorted that he had no right to ask, insisting he had left her distraught. She told him that men often think they know everything but understand nothing and demanded he stop bothering Fang Xue and let her prepare for the College Entrance Exam.

Wei Lai apologized and agreed. Back home, Wei Lai's stepmother expressed her distress to his father over Wei Lai's sadness, criticizing his father's perceived indifference. She emphasized that people should pursue what they love to avoid regret. His father did not get angry but chose to leave the house. That evening, as the family had dinner, Wei Lai's stepmother encouraged him to eat heartily, reminding him of his father's kindness and that it was her birthday.

A delivery person arrived with a cake, initially causing confusion, until Wei Lai's father revealed it was a surprise birthday cake he had prepared for his wife. The atmosphere softened, and the family enjoyed a harmonious moment. Wei Lai's stepmother suggested that his father had changed and encouraged Wei Lai to have a calm talk with him. Wei Lai then told his father he had something to say, asking him not to get angry, regardless of his response. Ultimately, Wei Lai returned to school. During the night self-study session, both Li Dalai and Fang Xue were visibly astonished, mouths agape, to see him back in class.

Episode 21 Recap

In Mr. Yin's office, Gu Shang and Mr. Yin discussed Gu Shang's application to Civil Aviation. Mr. Yin humorously pointed out that Gu Shang was already slacking off despite not yet being admitted, to which Gu Shang replied that he had always been that way.

Mr. Yin reminded him he was fortunate the school had a quota this year, as his scores wouldn't get him in otherwise, and emphasized that Civil Aviation was his only chance since Air China and the military weren't accepting re-enrolled students. Gu Shang confidently claimed that "there is always a way out" and that God looks after even students with bad scores.

Mr. Yin also inquired about the injury on Gu Shang's arm, which Gu Shang assured him was fine after being checked. Mr. Yin urged him to pass the medical exam this time. Meanwhile, in the dorm, Fang Xue informed Cheng Jing that Gu Shang might be admitted by Civil Aviation. Cheng Jing, still distant after their recent disagreement, initially feigned indifference.

However, upon hearing that Gu Shang had been sick for days and she was worried about his medical exam, she secretly pulled out medicine from her drawer and asked Fang Xue to deliver it to him. Fang Xue later gave the medicine to Gu Shang, teasing Cheng Jing as "all bark and no bite." Gu Shang expressed his wish for the two of them to talk face-to-face, but Fang Xue explained that their issues were complicated and would take time.

Gu Shang also shared his dream of becoming a pilot, specifically his desire for the freedom of flying and how cool it was, despite never having been on a plane. The day of the Civil Aviation medical exam arrived, and Gu Shang, waiting nervously, overheard a student complain about being disqualified due to a nearly invisible scar on his leg, further intensifying Gu Shang's anxiety. When it was his turn, Gu Shang awkwardly hesitated to take off his shirt.

The doctor, annoyed by his shyness, tried to help him, inadvertently revealing a large scar on Gu Shang's arm. The doctor noted it as a "serious problem," explaining the high pressure in the sky could tear the scar, posing a risk. Gu Shang, however, argued that it was a new scar and that the Civil Aviation guide didn't explicitly forbid scars.

He passionately pleaded his case, stating it would be unfair to disqualify him solely for the scar, given his excellent physical and mental health, which he believed surpassed any other candidate. He urged the doctor not to deprive him of his dream. Moved by Gu Shang's sincerity, the doctor agreed to reconsider and told him to await further news. Back at school, Wu Dameng found a dejected Gu Shang and asked what was wrong.

Gu Shang confided that he believed he might not pass the pilot recruitment due to the scar on his arm. Wu Dameng offered words of encouragement, assuring him he could make it. Later, while cleaning the classroom, Fang Xue discovered Qiao Mai's notebook and realized that Xue Hui had been threatening Qiao Mai. She discussed this with Wei Lai and Gu Shang, who connected it to Qiao Mai's previous strange behaviors, making the truth about Xue Hui's bullying clear.

The trio confronted Xue Hui, who, instead of being scared, arrogantly dismissed their accusations, claiming he was merely "helping her to clear the sin" for her cheating. He then declared he was going to find his "next servant" and walked away, unfazed. Gu Shang, frustrated by Xue Hui's dismissive attitude and unreasonable behavior, wanted to resort to violence, but Wei Lai cautioned him, reminding him that Director Lei was watching him.

Gu Shang, however, insisted he had a plan and told them to stay out of it. Later, Fang Xue and Wei Lai worried about Gu Shang's plan, wondering if he would do something reckless. Suddenly, Xue Hui's voice echoed from outside the window, repeatedly chanting, "I'm guilty." Pulling back the curtains, they saw Gu Shang forcing Xue Hui to apologize on the rooftop.

Gu Shang made Xue Hui confess to bullying Qiao Mai, making her do his laundry and socks, insulting her, and ultimately driving her to mental distress and withdrawal from school. Gu Shang warned Xue Hui that if he ever bullied anyone again, he would have other ways to deal with him.

When Gu Shang returned to the classroom, his classmates praised his effective method for dealing with Xue Hui, who they were told wouldn't be seen at Xiang Jiang Middle School again. However, before Gu Shang could bask in the glory, Mr. Yin summoned him to his office. Mr. Yin sternly chastised Gu Shang for his impulsive actions, stating that violence was not the best solution, especially at such a critical time for his pilot application.

Gu Shang, believing his admission hope was slim anyway due to his scar, responded defiantly. To Gu Shang's astonishment, Mr. Yin then produced an official admission notice, announcing that Gu Shang was the only student from their school to be accepted. Overwhelmed, Gu Shang hugged Mr. Yin in gratitude before joyfully rushing out. Back in class, Gu Shang found Fang Xue organizing a group to visit Qiao Mai.

Gu Shang insisted on joining, arguing that Qiao Mai was their classmate and it was important for boys to go along for safety, especially since she was far away. The group agreed, with Fang Xue promising to ask Mr. Yin for leave and a student suggesting they bring a gift. Gu Shang then proposed an idea for the surprise. At Xiang Jiang People's Hospital, Qiao Mai was surprised to see balloons rising outside her window, carrying messages of encouragement.

Her friends, including Gu Shang, Fang Xue, and Wei Lai, stood below, calling her name and shouting, "Qiao Mai, fighting! You are the best!" On their way back to school, Gu Shang and Cheng Jing lagged behind, chatting. Cheng Jing congratulated Gu Shang on his admission, noting he wouldn't have pressure for the upcoming exam. Gu Shang admitted he generally felt less pressure anyway. Upon reaching school, they noticed a crowd gathered around the bulletin board, gossiping about Cheng Jing.

Someone had posted derogatory information about her, including pictures, implying her mother worked in a disreputable club and labeling Cheng Jing a "dirty girl." Enraged, Gu Shang yelled at the onlookers, defending Cheng Jing and asserting the information was fake. Distressed, Cheng Jing quickly walked away, and Gu Shang followed.

Just then, Gu Shang received a phone call from Xue Hui, who taunted him about the photos and hinted at "something more exciting" planned for 10 PM at "Degenerate Street" behind the school. Gu Shang immediately went to the specified location, confronting Xue Hui. Xue Hui proudly admitted his scheme, revealing more photos, some of which were clearly photoshopped. He gloated that while Gu Shang knew they were fake, others wouldn't, and posting them online would make Cheng Jing "famous."

Gu Shang angrily warned Xue Hui, but Xue Hui continued to provoke him, claiming he was merely making Cheng Jing "clear Gu Shang's sins" and daring Gu Shang to hit him, knowing it would jeopardize Gu Shang's pilot admission. Xue Hui further taunted Gu Shang, suggesting Cheng Jing meant nothing compared to his personal ambition. Enraged, Gu Shang finally lost control and violently beat Xue Hui.

Just then, police officers, having been tipped off by Xue Hui, arrived and arrested Gu Shang. At the police station on Tian Huang No.2 Street, Gu Shang's father was called. Upon arriving and seeing his son, his father sternly declared, "I'm not your dad anymore," before hitting Gu Shang outside the station and driving away furiously. That night, Gu Shang returned to his classroom alone, packed his belongings, and carefully straightened Cheng Jing's tilted books on her desk before leaving.

The next day, the school announced Gu Shang's expulsion for repeatedly engaging in fights both on and off campus, as well as various disciplinary violations that caused a severe negative impact. In the dorm, Cheng Jing was deeply affected, losing her appetite and crying alone. That afternoon, Gu Shang walked out of the teaching building with his suitcase. Wu Dameng, having come to see him off, stopped him.

Gu Shang tried to send him back to class, assuring him they would meet again as friends. Wu Dameng, tearfully, thanked Gu Shang for helping him with his luggage when they first met, an act that was very important to him. He then asked for a hug, which Gu Shang readily gave. As Gu Shang continued to walk away, he found a paper airplane with a note from a classmate.

Soon, a flurry of paper airplanes descended, each carrying heartfelt messages and blessings from his classmates, who filled the windows, waving goodbye to him. Gu Shang looked up, returning their farewells before finally leaving the school.

Episode 22 Recap

During class, a teacher distributed college application forms. Fang Xue had no idea what major to choose, admitting she hadn't even been sure if she could get into university. Wei Lai suggested they visit the library to research. There, Wei Lai found "Recording Engineering" and suggested it to Fang Xue, reminding her of her interest in recording when they were in Beijing.

He noted the required scores were close to hers and listed impressive subjects like "Fundamentals of Acoustics" and "Surround Sound Technology," sparking Fang Xue's interest despite it requiring an Art Examination. Another classmate, inspired by choosing a major for herself rather than for a boy, discussed her own college plans, asking others about theirs. Fang Xue admitted she still hadn't decided.

Later, during a meal with friends, Fiona announced her decision to study abroad, which surprised her friends who expressed they would miss her. Cheng Jing, looking withdrawn, silently left the table. When she went to the water room, she was so distracted that she nearly scalded herself, only to be stopped by Mr. Ying. Concerned about Cheng Jing's continued sadness since Gu Shang left, Mr. Ying mentioned that his calls to Gu Shang had gone unanswered.

He then offered to take Cheng Jing to visit Gu Shang during the upcoming holiday. He also advised Cheng Jing, whom he considered his most reliable student, to approach future problems with logic rather than emotion. Mr. Ying then called Fang Xue to his office, inquiring about her college intentions. Fang Xue expressed her desire to pursue Recording Engineering, but worried about the tight one-month deadline for the Art Examination.

Mr. Ying encouraged her to follow her passion and suggested she talk to senior music art students for advice before discussing it with her family during the holiday. As Fang Xue was leaving, she met Fiona, who was preparing to depart for her studies abroad. They wished each other a Happy New Year and said their goodbyes, with Fang Xue promising to call. Fang Xue then made a detour to visit Qiao Mai at the hospital.

Qiao Mai thanked Fang Xue for the cassette tape she had given her, explaining how the recorded sounds made her feel like she was traveling despite being bedridden. Qiao Mai's mother then entered, warmly greeted Fang Xue, and offered her a New Year cake, which Fang Xue politely declined, citing her bus schedule. As Qiao Mai's mother walked Fang Xue out, she confessed her high expectations for her students, contrasting it with her own daughter's struggles.

Fang Xue gently advised her to be patient with Qiao Mai, who was exhausted. Upon returning home for the New Year's Eve dinner, Fang Xue sensed something was wrong when her father and grandfather were absent, supposedly visiting relatives. Her mother inadvertently revealed that her grandfather was in the hospital. Upset, Fang Xue demanded to know what was happening. Her father reassured her that her grandfather was fine and promised to take her to the hospital after dinner.

At the hospital, after confirming his recovery, Fang Xue sought her grandfather's advice about her Art Examination plans. He enthusiastically supported her decision, telling her that he still kept all her childhood recordings in a box under his nightstand and encouraged her to use them to impress her art tutor. Fang Xue, touched by his support, told him she loved him. Back at school, Fang Xue dedicated herself to practicing for the Art Examination.

Exhausted from her efforts, she rested her head on her desk. Wei Lai tried to wake her, pushing her gently. He offered words of encouragement, emphasizing that life is full of missed opportunities, and it’s better to be brave and pursue what she truly desires than to live with regret. Fang Xue’s father later brought her a large box containing her childhood instrument.

He encouraged her, reminding her of her early talent and cautioning her to keep the instrument safe for her grandfather. He also updated her on her grandfather's full recovery. That evening, Fang Xue's roommates expressed curiosity about the mysterious box. She eventually revealed its contents: a Suona. Though some initially found it "tacky" and associated with funerals, her roommate quickly defended it as "national culture" and something unique to Fang Xue's lively personality.

They cheered her on, wishing her luck for the exam. The next day, on her way to the exam, Fang Xue spotted Gu Shang in a taxi and impulsively asked the driver to pull over. She followed him to Moulin Rouge KTV, but the bouncers refused her entry, citing her apparent age and the KTV's minimum charge.

Realizing she would be late for her exam, Fang Xue quickly called Cheng Jing, informing her of Gu Shang's location and urging her to go find him while Fang Xue went to collect her admission ticket. Fang Xue managed to arrive just in time to get her admission ticket, receiving a warning from the teacher about her tardiness. Meanwhile, Cheng Jing, now an adult, confronted the KTV bouncers and forcefully entered, quickly locating Gu Shang in room A09.

She angrily confronted a heavily inebriated Gu Shang, scolding him for his irresponsible behavior while his college entrance exam was approaching. Gu Shang, feeling provoked, shouted back that he had been expelled from school again, mockingly asking if she found it ridiculous. Cheng Jing, accusing him of self-pity and arrogance, demanded he get up.

Gu Shang retorted that his social gathering was none of her business and offered her money to buy a new uniform, telling her to stay out of his affairs. Heartbroken, Cheng Jing declared it was the last time she would ever care about him, then slapped him across the face and left in tears. At the exam venue, another student mocked Fang Xue’s Suona, grabbed it, and accidentally broke it during a struggle.

When it was Fang Xue's turn to perform, without her instrument, she tried to sing but was quickly dismissed by the judges, who openly criticized her poor performance and the low quality of some applicants. Distraught, Fang Xue called Wei Lai to express her frustration. That evening, Wei Lai arrived at Fang Xue's hotel room with a brand new Suona, more expensive than her grandfather's.

He gently comforted her, encouraging her not to give up on the last day of the exam after all her hard work. Fang Xue confessed she felt like giving up and returning to regular college entrance examination preparation, believing she wasn't cut out for the Art Examination. To lift her spirits, Wei Lai then offered to perform the embarrassing rhythmic dance he had mentioned earlier, which he did with exaggerated movements and a catchy tune.

Fang Xue, overwhelmed with emotion, cried and laughed as he danced, his silly performance providing much-needed comfort. Wei Lai then tenderly caressed her head, urging her not to be sad and to keep going. The next day, during the talent show portion of the exam, the same student who had broken Fang Xue’s instrument continued to taunt her. Undeterred, Fang Xue stepped onto the stage.

Introduced as performer number 38, she played a powerful Suona solo titled "Wu Song Murdered His Sister-In-Law." Her performance was spectacular, earning resounding applause and unanimous praise from the judges. The mocking student, now seething with jealousy, angrily walked out.

Episode 23 Recap

As graduation approached, students began taking graduation photos. Afterwards, they returned to class, and Mr. Yin taught the last knowledge points, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming 8th mock exam as the final test before the College Entrance Examination. He urged them to take it seriously and avoid any regrets. After class, Tang Tiantian stopped him, asking him to sign her yearbook as a keepsake.

She also confessed her aspiration to become a teacher as excellent as him, to which Mr. Yin, though playfully dismissing her flattery, offered encouragement. In the teachers' office, Ms. Lei and the other Senior 3 teachers discussed the arrangements for the College Entrance Examination. She announced that exam rooms had been allocated, with students from a single class spread across two to three locations, including Zhenhua Middle School.

She stressed that class teachers must accompany their students to inspect the rooms. Ms. Lei also highlighted that the 8th mock exam aimed to boost student confidence, so teachers should avoid making the questions excessively difficult. After the meeting, Ms. Lei noticed Mr. Yin's somber mood. He confided that he felt a pang of sadness at the thought of parting ways with his students, this being his first time as a class teacher.

Ms. Lei, understanding his emotions, reminded him that good things must come to an end and that teachers guide students to their next destination. She advised him to remain composed during this critical time. The 8th mock exam concluded, and students discussed their performance, feeling relieved that the last major hurdle before the College Entrance Examination was over. Meanwhile, in the teachers' office, a new concern arose.

News reported a widespread issue of counterfeit Chunghwa 2B pencils that might not be readable by exam card scanners. Teachers worried if the pencils sold near the school were fake. Upon hearing that genuine Chunghwa pencils could be purchased at a specific counter in the Friendship Shopping Center, Mr. Yin, without hesitation, volunteered to go. He quickly offered to buy pencils for all the students in his class and for any other teachers who needed them.

Later, in their classroom, Fang Xue's re-enrolled class watched the Senior 3 students taking their graduation photos outside. This sparked a desire in Fang Xue and her classmates to have their own group photo, even though re-enrolled classes typically didn't. Fang Xue approached Ms. Lei to seek permission. While Mr. Yin was still on his way back with the pencils, the photographer grew impatient.

Despite Fang Xue's attempts to delay, explaining Mr. Yin was stuck in traffic, the photographer insisted on proceeding. Reluctantly, the students took their graduation photo without Mr. Yin. Soon after, Mr. Yin arrived, breathless, only to learn the photos had already been taken. He feigned indifference, joking about not being photogenic, and quickly excused himself to put away the pencils.

Observing his demeanor, Fang Xue and Wei Lai realized Mr. Yin was putting on a brave face to avoid upsetting them. Fang Xue suggested they prepare a special souvenir for him. The next day, Mr. Yin brought a special treat for the class: Coke and Zongzi, symbolizing "passing" the exam. He reminded students about checking the exam rooms at Zhenhua Middle School that weekend, emphasizing the importance of careful inspection.

He then gathered them for a "send-off drink," using Coke in place of liquor, much like the heroes in "Water Margin" before battle, to boost their spirits. He reminded them that despite the hardships, they had persevered and would always be members of Class 1, Senior 4, urging them to face the final exam without regrets. On the bus ride to Zhenhua Middle School, Mr. Yin tried to lighten the heavy atmosphere, telling students not to be nervous.

At Zhenhua, he meticulously inspected Fang Xue's exam room with her. Fang Xue noticed a bothersome buzzing noise coming from a light fixture. Mr. Yin brought it to the attention of the Zhenhua staff, who dismissed it as negligible and accused them of being overly critical. Determined to resolve the issue for Fang Xue, Mr. Yin reassured her, took her bag, and told her to return with the others, promising to handle the problem himself, mentioning his acquaintances at Zhenhua.

Outside Zhenhua Middle School, Fang Xue met Cheng Jing and recounted the details of the noisy lamp and Mr. Yin's promise to fix it. Cheng Jing expressed her confidence that Mr. Yin would indeed resolve the issue. At that moment, Gu Shang called out to Cheng Jing from across the street. He approached her, acknowledging her anger from a previous incident with Ms. Lei and admitting he had underestimated her.

He stated he had no regrets about fighting for her and assured her not to worry about his own future, emphasizing that he could thrive even without attending college. Finally, he urged her not to change for him and wished her good luck on her College Entrance Examination before leaving. On what was supposed to be a day off from classes, Fang Xue woke up early, her body clock accustomed to the rigorous school schedule.

At school, Ms. Lei instructed students to pack their belongings thoroughly, as cleaners would be coming. She handed Fang Xue, as the class monitor, a "note prepared for the College Entrance Examination" from Mr. Yin to distribute. Fang Xue inquired about Mr. Yin's absence, and Ms. Lei gave the excuse that he had a cold and couldn't come to see them off. Ms. Lei then offered her best wishes to the students.

Later, in the cafeteria, Fang Xue couldn't shake off her worry about the lamp noise at Zhenhua. Wei Lai noticed her anxiety and, sharing a personal anecdote about overcoming exam-related nervousness, offered to accompany her to Zhenhua Middle School that weekend to re-check the light. When they arrived, Fang Xue confirmed the noise was gone. They asked a security guard for an explanation.

The guard revealed that a male teacher from Xiang Jiang Middle School had caused a significant disturbance by insisting on fixing the light on a school day, even getting his arm dislocated during an altercation with a colleague. To avoid further trouble, the school principal decided to replace the lamp. Hearing this, Fang Xue and Wei Lai were deeply moved, their eyes welling up with tears, realizing the extent of Mr. Yin's sacrifice.

On the day of the College Entrance Examination, Mr. Yin, with his arm in a sling, watched the news reports about the exam from his hospital bed. Despite his injury, he later made his way to the exam site, quietly offering his support to his students. After the examination, Fang Xue's family celebrated her impressive score of 560 at home. Fang Xue confidently declared that she would secure admission to Communication University of China.

At school, students excitedly discussed their university choices. Cheng Jing shared her application to Peking University for paleontology, while Wei Lai announced his decision to pursue automation at Tsinghua University. After submitting their application forms to the teacher, Wei Lai walked with Fang Xue on the way home. He expressed a shy worry that she might fall in love with someone else at university, and Fang Xue, with a happy nod, acknowledged his concern.

That night, Mr. Yin returned to his empty classroom, a profound sense of nostalgia washing over him as he gazed at the familiar desks and chairs. Ms. Lei, noticing the light on, entered and joined him. She reflected on her long career, admitting she often had to play the "bad cop" for the students and wondering if they would resent her in the future. Mr. Yin reassured her that her students understood her true intentions.

Ms. Lei then likened teachers to ferrymen, guiding students across a river to their futures, a mission she felt was nearing its completion with her upcoming retirement. As she left, she asked Mr. Yin to lock up. Alone again, Mr. Yin discovered a CD on his desk. He played it, and as he watched a video recorded by his students, tears streamed down his face.

The video featured heartfelt messages: some thanking him for his encouragement and for helping them find their passions, others expressing gratitude for his unwavering support when no one else would, and all of them urging him not to forget them and to find happiness in his own life.

Episode 24 (Ending) Recap

Fang Xue dreamt she was at a 10-year high school reunion where classmates chatted cheerfully. Tang Tiantian announced that the main campus of Xiangjiang Middle School would soon be demolished, inviting everyone to gather on the 31st to witness it on the 1st of next month. The joyous dinner concluded, and Fang Xue and Tang Tiantian left together. Gu Shang went downstairs to see them off, where they ran into a hurried Cheng Jing. The four chatted cheerfully.

Gu Shang, always quick-witted, began teasing his wife about her new haircut, confessing he hadn't noticed it due to their busy schedules. As Gu Shang had another commitment, he left, and Fang Xue, Tang Tiantian, and Cheng Jing shared a taxi. Inside the taxi, Tang Tiantian was preoccupied with work, explaining her ambition to become an excellent teacher to earn a higher salary and improve her life.

Fang Xue urged her not to overwork, but Tang Tiantian spoke of life's hardships. They discussed the school's demolition again, scheduled for the first of next month. Fang Xue invited Cheng Jing to join them, but Cheng Jing was hesitant, citing continuous overtime. Later, Fang Xue walked past a wedding dress shop and, drawn by the displays, went inside for a brief look before leaving.

Shortly after getting out of the taxi, Fang Xue received a call from her boss, Mr. Ye, who urgently requested her presence at the office to discuss a project. Upon her arrival, Mr. Ye, after concluding a business call, offered Fang Xue a drink, which she declined. He pressed her, implying she was avoiding drinking with him despite her usual tolerance for alcohol.

Shifting to business, Mr. Ye commented on Fang Xue's perfume, noting it was Terre d'Hermes, a men's fragrance. Fang Xue explained her boyfriend had bought it for her, to which Mr. Ye remarked on her boyfriend's "ordinary taste" and offered to buy her a niche perfume. Soon, Mr. Ye made inappropriate advances, placing his hand on Fang Xue and suggesting she needn't "act" since her boyfriend was frequently away, proposing a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Fang Xue immediately recoiled, slapped Mr. Ye, and fled the office. Overwhelmed and in tears, she called Wei Lai. Wei Lai answered, but before Fang Xue could articulate her distress, colleagues at his excavation site called him away to examine a new specimen. Swallowing her pain, Fang Xue insisted she was fine and urged him to return to his work before hanging up.

At Cheng Jing's home, she awoke to find Gu Shang drunk on the bed and gently covered him with a blanket. In the bathroom, she stared at a positive pregnancy test, lost in thought. At work, Cheng Jing was noticeably exhausted, suffering from a headache. Her manager, Mr. Huang, approached, asking if she was pregnant, mentioning another colleague whose pregnancy had caused project delays and reminding Cheng Jing that this was a crucial time for her promotion.

Cheng Jing quickly denied being pregnant. After work, Cheng Jing rushed to the hospital for a pregnancy check, but the outpatient service was closed. She then inquired about booking an abortion directly, but the nurse informed her a diagnosis was required first and asked if she had discussed it with her family. Cheng Jing dismissed the suggestion, stating it wasn't necessary. As she left the hospital, Gu Shang called, chastising her for forgetting their anniversary plans at his bar.

Cheng Jing explained her memory lapse was due to excessive overtime. Their conversation escalated into an argument, with Gu Shang questioning if she was "competing" with him due to his business success. Cheng Jing vehemently denied jealousy, while Gu Shang clarified his concern for her competitive nature. Cheng Jing abruptly ended the call, citing her taxi's arrival. At Xiang Jiang Middle School, Tang Tiantian observed her students practicing a song, noticing two without school uniforms.

She learned from the students that the new director, Mr. Pi, had instituted a policy banning the two lowest-scoring students from wearing uniforms, claiming they were "unworthy" of being Xiang Jiang Middle School students. Disturbed, Tang Tiantian went to Mr. Pi's office.

Mr. Pi, having reviewed her speech for an "excellent teacher" award, offered minor revisions and instructed her to visit Mr. Yin (who was recovering from an appendicitis operation) on behalf of the school's leadership, bringing a large fruit basket. Tang Tiantian then voiced her concern that the uniform policy could negatively impact students' mental health. Mr. Pi dismissed her, asserting his greater concern for student well-being and defending the policy as a means to instill "crisis awareness."

He reminded her of her impending maternity leave and told her to return to her duties. Later, during lunchtime, Tang Tiantian witnessed students in uniform cutting in line ahead of those without, verbally abusing them and questioning their status as students or even "cleaners," while other students joined in the ridicule.

At Fang Xue's company, during a meeting, Mr. Ye, still holding a grudge from the previous incident with Fang Xue, announced the approval of An Na's project proposal over Fang Xue's. He subtly criticized Fang Xue for being distracted by ambitions of making documentaries in Africa rather than focusing on company projects.

An Na, emboldened by the boss's favor, then taunted Fang Xue, remarking on her upcoming marriage and questioning if a "bird cage" could truly confine her "soaring eagle" spirit. Fang Xue remained silent. That evening, Fang Xue sat alone at home when Wei Lai unexpectedly arrived, having finished his archaeological work ahead of schedule. Fang Xue was overjoyed, embracing him warmly and asking if he had missed her. He presented her with a rock from his expedition.

Later, unable to sleep, Fang Xue found Wei Lai still awake, engrossed in work. She discovered a report on his computer, detailing his refusal to participate in a Chilean investigation, a long-held dream of his. Fang Xue angrily confronted him for making such a significant decision without her input and sacrificing his aspirations. Returning to Cheng Jing, she was dry heaving in the restroom, while outside, her colleagues gossiped about her being pregnant and planning an abortion.

They speculated that her pride as a top student with a PHD prevented her from settling for life as a businessman's wife. Cheng Jing emerged, chastising them for their indiscreet gossiping, then left. At the hospital's abortion waiting room, Cheng Jing called Fang Xue for support. However, Fang Xue instead contacted Gu Shang, who rushed from his bar to the hospital. Seeing Cheng Jing walk out, Gu Shang was visibly distraught and relieved.

Cheng Jing smiled at his reaction, confirming she had not gone through with the abortion. She told him she had quit her job, explaining that after 30 years of living a strenuous life, she needed a break. She acknowledged that reconnecting with old friends like Fang Xue had helped her open up, and admitted she had always competed with herself, but now desired a different way of life.

Gu Shang, in turn, confessed his own shortcomings, and they embraced, deciding to embark on a journey together, starting with Iceland, followed by Egypt to visit the Karnak Temple. Meanwhile, Tang Tiantian visited Mr. Yin in the hospital. He, recovering from his appendicitis operation, reminisced about past acts of defiance for his students. He admitted to being afraid of losing his job back then but believed a teacher's duty was to fight for their students' best interests.

He also playfully teased Tang Tiantian about her pregnancy. The next day, at a school assembly where she was to receive an "excellent teacher" award on her 30th birthday, Tang Tiantian deviated from her prepared speech. She publicly denounced the school's policy of barring low-scoring students from wearing uniforms, declaring that Xiang Jiang Middle School should embody inclusive education. Her bold statement earned her a resounding applause from the students. Concurrently, Fang Xue and Wei Lai continued their difficult conversation.

Wei Lai explained that he refused the Chile investigation because he didn't want Fang Xue to be alone while he was away on business, especially now that they were getting married. Fang Xue retorted that he shouldn't sacrifice his dreams for her, emphasizing personal responsibility and not burdening her with guilt. She observed his unhappiness at work and his efforts to put on a brave face, which pained her, and brought up his prior refusal to go to Malawi.

Wei Lai felt she was implying their relationship was devoid of happiness, but Fang Xue clarified she didn't want him to be consumed by his current job. Their unresolved discussion was interrupted by a call from Tang Tiantian, reminding Fang Xue that tomorrow was the last day before Xiang Jiang Middle School's demolition and asking if she would come. Fang Xue agreed. Their Senior 4 class gathered at the old school for a farewell photo.

Fang Xue chatted with Gu Shang and Cheng Jing. Cheng Jing confirmed their travel plans to Egypt and her commitment to prioritizing their life together while being cautious with her pregnancy, telling Fang Xue she would take care of herself as she was ready to "enjoy life." Wei Lai, however, was unable to attend due to a project deadline. Fang Xue then wandered off alone.

In a classroom, she saw two students in a romantic embrace, which brought back fond memories, and she left with a smile. As the sun set, Fang Xue and Wei Lai met at the beach where Wei Lai had first visited her home. Wei Lai presented Fang Xue with the consent form for a South America investigation, and confirmed he had also decided to go to Malawi.

He explained that he realized he had been "lacking vigor" and no longer wanted to live that way. He questioned the value of a relationship if it didn't help them both become better versions of themselves, suggesting they should pursue their careers separately. Fang Xue confirmed his resolve. Wei Lai assured her that his feelings for her would remain constant, regardless of distance, acknowledging that three years seemed long but reminding her that "the earth is round."

Fang Xue struggled to hold back her tears as Wei Lai expressed his hope that when they eventually reunited, she would still be "the one who was at the very beginning." They shared a final embrace before parting ways, each setting off on their individual paths.
