Emperor Muyun Qin, fearing the demise of the Duan Dynasty under his rule, discussed his concerns with Empress Nanku Mingyi. While she dismissed the small Hanzhou tribes as a threat, Muyun Qin hinted at a deeper worry. Empress Nanku Mingyi seized the opportunity to once again urge him to establish a new Crown Prince to avoid Muyun Sheng's ominous star fate. However, Muyun Qin staunchly refused, asserting Muyun Sheng's innocence.
He summoned the eunuch Qin Ming, pressing him about the incident at a banquet a year prior. Qin Ming confessed to replacing Muyun Sheng's wine with medicated wine at that banquet, driven by his belief that he could not allow the Duan Dynasty to fall into the hands of a half-human, half-spirit.
Although he acted on the instructions of Muyun Luan, Qin Ming protected Muyun Luan by refusing to implicate him and committed suicide on the spot in front of the enraged Emperor. Muyun Qin, furious at Qin Ming's words and actions, ordered him to be given a thick burial. Yu Xinji visited Muyun Sheng in Weiping Hall, informing him that its seal was soon to be lifted, paving the way for his return to court.
Muyun Sheng, aware of the court's pervasive avoidance of him, was skeptical. Yu Xinji revealed that the Emperor had uncovered evidence that someone had deliberately drugged Muyun Sheng's wine at the banquet, causing him to go mad. If it could be proven that his perceived madness was unrelated to spirit magic, it would clear all the circulating rumors.
As Yu Xinji departed, Muyun Sheng's thoughts drifted to his past with Pan Xi, recalling her gradual disappearance in his arms and the realization that these events were part of a deliberate scheme. Later, a phantom of Pan Xi appeared to Muyun Sheng, teaching him secret arts from a book and urging him to take care of himself and rest.
However, Muyun Sheng, convinced he was no longer his former self and now possessed spirit power, refused to waste a moment. He was determined to master these secret arts quickly, believing it was the only way to reunite with Pan Xi. Pan Xi, however, sadly revealed that her spirit threads had scattered, and she no longer truly existed; even with the secret arts, he would not see her as she once was.
Muyun Sheng adamantly refused to give up, resolving to prove his past self "ridiculously wrong." He declared that the world was without order, and he would not allow himself to be harmed if he chose not to harm others. He vowed to master the secret arts to exact revenge on all who had harmed Pan Xi, making them experience the agonizing loss of everything.
Muyun Sheng's palm suddenly manifested a mysterious mark, which he immediately drew onto a screen painting in his room. Meanwhile, Muyun Qin, feeling deep guilt and remorse for the harm inflicted upon Muyun Sheng, pondered how to mend their fractured father-son relationship. He was polishing his emperor's sword when Gu Songzhi and Xue Huo, high-ranking officials, arrived for an audience.
They demanded punishment for General Muru Shuo's recent military defeat and advocated for reduced expenses for the Muru army, citing numerous natural disasters across the Great Duan Dynasty and Muru Shuo's frequent failures. They argued that failing to punish Muru Shuo would destabilize public sentiment and expressed concern about the Muru clan's growing power.
Muyun Qin, however, made a decision that astonished them: he announced plans to heavily reward Muru Shuo and grant 3,000 gold pieces to the families of fallen Muru Iron Cavalry soldiers. Xue Huo and Gu Songzhi protested this unprecedented reward for a defeat, fearing global ridicule. Muyun Qin candidly explained his unwavering trust in both Gu Songzhi's straightforward loyalty and Muru Shuo's fearless courage, likening Muru Shuo to his "left and right arm."
He relied on Muru Shuo as long as he lived. Although moved, Gu Songzhi pointed out the critical shortage of military funds. Unfazed, Muyun Qin ordered all provincial princes to double their taxes until the war's conclusion, emphasizing that the Muru clan was defending the empire for the Muyun clan in Hanzhou, and therefore, no prince could refuse this increased tribute, regardless of dissenting opinions.
Following this, Muyun Qin informed them of his intent to visit Muyun Sheng and commanded them to accompany him. Concurrently, Empress Nanku Mingyi secretly dispatched a note to Muyun Luan, but it was intercepted by Muyun De. After reading the contents, Muyun De passed it on to Muyun Luan, who immediately burned it.
Muyun Luan then ordered Muyun De to prevent Muyun Qin's visit to Weiping Hall and to eliminate Muyun Sheng, whom he believed could not be allowed to live. However, Muyun De, harboring his own ulterior motives, conspired with Mo Yuchen and subtly persuaded Muyun Luan to spare Muyun Sheng, suggesting that if control was the issue, alternative methods could be found to harness Muyun Sheng for their grand scheme.
Gu Songzhi, Xue Huo, and other court officials secretly convened to discuss Muyun Qin's unprecedented plan to visit Muyun Sheng, a perceived "criminal." They interpreted it as Muyun Qin's intention to exonerate Muyun Sheng and re-establish him as Crown Prince. The officials vowed not to stand idly by and allow Muyun Qin to hand the human realm to a "half-human, half-spirit" ruler.
Separately, Yu Xinji advised Muyun Sheng to dress appropriately for Muyun Qin's impending visit, believing the Emperor felt apologetic. Muyun Sheng, however, rejected any apology, demanding only to know if his mother, Consort Yinrong, and Pan Xi were truly considered "anomalies" in Muyun Qin's heart. As Muyun Qin and Empress Nanku Mingyi prepared to depart for Weiping Hall, they were met at the palace gate by a throng of kneeling officials led by Xue Huo and Gu Songzhi.
The ministers implored Muyun Qin to return to the palace, even resorting to threats in the name of the populace. Muyun Qin denounced their actions as disloyal. In a dramatic display, Gu Songzhi removed his official hat, proclaimed his family's loyalty to be paramount above life, and declared himself ashamed to be branded disloyal before tragically smashing his head against the city wall, dying instantly.
Despite his strong desire to see Muyun Sheng, Muyun Qin was left with no choice but to abandon his visit. In Weiping Hall, Muyun Sheng and Yu Xinji waited anxiously for Muyun Qin, but instead, Muyun De arrived. Knowing Muyun Sheng's deepest pains, Muyun De deliberately claimed that Muyun Qin was feasting with his ministers in the palace, having completely forgotten about Muyun Sheng.
He cruelly mocked Muyun Sheng's pitiful plight, aiming to ignite Muyun Sheng's desire for revenge and manipulate him into wielding the Emperor's Sword to further his own and Mo Yuchen's grand ambitions. Though outwardly calm, Muyun De's words resonated deeply within Muyun Sheng. He returned to the spirit painting, observing the mysterious mark, and realized that his secret arts were now complete, a newfound understanding dawning upon him.
