The Sun in the Dark Episode 5 Recap
> The Sun in the Dark Recap
After Ye Chenyuan was injured during their escape, Bai Xiaoying tried to heal him, but his condition worsened. Ye Chenyuan believed Yun Ya had genuinely tried to kill Bai Xiaoying, but she disagreed. In her opinion, given that the immortal sect now considered her to have betrayed them and colluded with Ye Chenyuan, her master wanting her dead was only natural.
She further insisted that Yun Ya had shown mercy, pretending to lose and deliberately allowing them to escape, otherwise, Ye Chenyuan wouldn't have been able to flee. Angered by her naive defense, Ye Chenyuan grabbed her, seemingly intending to torment her with demonic energy again, but his strength failed, and he fainted. Bai Xiaoying considered abandoning him, thinking, "Not killing you now is my last act of mercy. Stay here and fend for yourself."
However, after only a few steps, she was pulled back by the Soul-Binding Rope connecting them. Resigned, Bai Xiaoying stayed to care for him. That night, Ye Chenyuan murmured "Bai Yixi" in his unconscious state. Bai Xiaoying wondered if Bai Yixi was his beloved. Ye Chenyuan remained unconscious, resting on her shoulder.
Meanwhile, the Immortal Lord ordered more troops to search for the traitor Bai Xiaoying, stressing the need to eliminate her swiftly and retrieve the Divine Sword to avoid endless consequences. Yun Ya spoke up, defending Bai Xiaoying, asserting that she would never covet power or betray their sect. Immortal Xiyuan and others accused Yun Ya of defending a traitor, questioning his motives.
Yun Ya knelt and requested to personally apprehend Bai Xiaoying, promising to investigate the truth and willing to share her punishment if he failed. The Immortal Lord, looking at him with disdain, remarked that he never realized Bai Xiaoying was so important to Yun Ya, but ultimately agreed to his request with a suspicious glance. When Ye Chenyuan awoke, he immediately declared their need to go to the Night Clan to use the Coldwood Origin Stone to heal his soul.
Bai Xiaoying refused, stating her allegiance to Nine Heavens and her reluctance to walk into a trap. Ye Chenyuan reminded her that the immortal sect no longer considered her one of their own. He explained that the sword crystal needed to awaken the Divine Sword was at the Night Clan, which was essential to sever the Soul-Binding Rope and allow her to kill him, as she wished. Seeing no other choice, Bai Xiaoying reluctantly agreed.
As they traveled, Bai Xiaoying chastised Ye Chenyuan for their slow pace, reminding him of the disciples hunting her. She also complained about the Divine Sword needing a sword crystal to break the Soul-Binding Rope, to which Ye Chenyuan retorted that an unawakened Divine Sword was merely useless scrap metal. Upon arriving at the Night Clan territory, Bai Xiaoying noticed the patrolling soldiers seemed unusual, suggesting an internal rebellion.
Ye Chenyuan confirmed that these guards were not Jiaotu's subordinates, whom he had left in charge. Just as he finished speaking, they were surrounded by forces led by Hua Yuying. Hua Yuying quickly realized Ye Chenyuan was injured and accused him of endangering the Night Clan and abandoning his people by bringing an immortal sect member into the Demon Heart Hall. She declared that the Night Deity's title should change hands and demanded Bai Xiaoying surrender the Divine Sword.
Bai Xiaoying claimed her injuries prevented her from summoning it. Hua Yuying then ordered them imprisoned until the Divine Sword was surrendered. Ye Chenyuan readily agreed to be jailed. Bai Xiaoying suspected he had a backup plan, believing his paranoid nature wouldn't allow him to enter the Night Clan so recklessly without one. Soon after, Jiaotu arrived and opened the prison door, welcoming Ye Chenyuan.
He informed Ye Chenyuan that Hua Yuying indeed harbored rebellious intentions, but they had laid ambushes and retaken the Demon Heart Hall. Hua Yuying had retreated to the Sword Crystal Sanctuary, taking the Coldwood Origin Stone with her. Ye Chenyuan, weakened, collapsed. Jiaotu took him to a healing hot spring and suggested forcibly taking back the Coldwood Origin Stone. However, Ye Chenyuan refused, stating he had his own methods and did not wish for bloodshed among the Night Clan members.
As Ye Chenyuan and Bai Xiaoying talked, he called the immortal sect people heartless. Bai Xiaoying angrily defended Yun Ya, asserting he was a good person, unlike him. Ye Chenyuan then snatched a Clear Spirit Ring, a bracelet Yun Ya had given Bai Xiaoying, claiming it was a Nine Heavens item that could be used to contact enemies and pose a threat to the Night Clan, hence he needed to keep it safe.
Bai Xiaoying accused him of acting out of jealousy, then directly asked if he liked her, noting all his injuries were taken for her sake. Ye Chenyuan became flustered and vehemently denied it, calling her foolish and telling her not to flatter herself.
He challenged her to kill him in his weakened state, to which Bai Xiaoying retorted that it was merely an instinct to save lives, as per immortal sect teachings, and she would kill him fairly when he recovered. Suddenly, Hua Yuying appeared, proposing marriage to Ye Chenyuan to form a strong alliance and rebuild the Night Clan.
She justified her proposal by explaining that if she died, the Coldwood Origin Stone and the Sword Crystal Sanctuary would self-destruct, giving her leverage. Ye Chenyuan was about to refuse, but Bai Xiaoying immediately accepted the proposal on his behalf. She explained that she wanted the sword crystal to unseal the Divine Sword, which was necessary to sever the Soul-Binding Rope and thus allow her to kill Ye Chenyuan.
She also pointed out that without the rope severed, she would constantly be present during their married life, including eating and sleeping, which would be awkward. She promised Hua Yuying that she would ensure Ye Chenyuan agreed to the marriage within three days. Hua Yuying agreed to the three-day deadline. Ye Chenyuan was furious, grabbing Bai Xiaoying and asking who she thought he was, for her to use him as a bargaining chip.
Bai Xiaoying, however, felt she was being merciful, considering him her mother's killer. She reminded him that she only came to the Night Clan because he said the sword crystal was there. Her words caused Ye Chenyuan to cough up blood. Concerned, Bai Xiaoying quickly took him to the hot spring, urging him to agree to Hua Yuying's proposal for the sake of his recovery.
Jiaotu soon brought Night Clan tonic pills, instructing Bai Xiaoying to feed them to Ye Chenyuan, even suggesting she chew them and feed them to him mouth-to-mouth. Seeing Ye Chenyuan unconscious, Bai Xiaoying reluctantly complied. Mid-feeding, Ye Chenyuan suddenly opened his eyes, startling Bai Xiaoying, who tried to flee. He then confessed that her suggestion for him to marry Hua Yuying had deeply saddened him.
He offered to help her get the sword crystal but demanded that she never mention the marriage proposal again. Bai Xiaoying's heart raced, flustered by his words. As the three-day deadline approached, Bai Xiaoying remembered Ye Chenyuan's sadness. Though a flicker of sympathy crossed her mind, she quickly reminded herself to stay calm and not be impulsive. She then carried the still-weakened Ye Chenyuan to Hua Yuying, demanding the sword crystal.
Hua Yuying tried to examine Ye Chenyuan, but he suddenly grabbed her, demanding she hand over the Coldwood Origin Stone and the sword crystal. At that moment, Jiaotu and his forces arrived, taking control of Hua Yuying's men. Hua Yuying, resentful, lashed out at Ye Chenyuan, accusing him of abandoning the Night Clan for twenty years to cultivate while she and Jiaotu tirelessly managed it. She declared him unworthy of being the Night Deity, especially with his greatly diminished power.
Jiaotu maintained his loyalty to the Night Deity. Hua Yuying, skeptical, used the Demon-Identifying Seal, a Night Clan treasure, to test Ye Chenyuan. The seal showed no reaction, leading Hua Yuying to confidently declare that Ye Chenyuan was not the true Night Deity. Bai Xiaoying suddenly understood. If Ye Chenyuan had been in seclusion for twenty years, he couldn't have been the one who killed her mother ten years ago at the Lantern Festival in Su City.
Fearing for his safety, she tried to escape with him. However, Ye Chenyuan stopped her, wanting to sever the Soul-Binding Rope and return to marry Hua Yuying to prevent Bai Xiaoying from being implicated further. Bai Xiaoying frantically tried to stop him. When he pressed her for a reason, she hesitated, unable to confess her feelings, and instead offered the excuse that they couldn't cut the rope without the sword crystal. Ye Chenyuan, however, firmly insisted that they could sever it.
