On New Year's Eve, while her brother Shi Fen is absorbed in video games, Shi Miao attempts to take a photo for social media and dislocates both of her arms. Unable to care for herself, she is neglected by Shi Fen, who even hangs a string of biscuits around her neck for food.
Fed up with his carelessness, which also led to her getting an eye infection after he touched her phone with his foot, Shi Miao decides to run away. Just as she is about to leave, their father, Shi Zhen, returns home. To get them out of the house, he insists they go visit relatives for the New Year, giving Shi Miao his large coat and sunglasses to hide her bandaged arms.
At their first great-aunt's house, she sees Shi Miao's arms hidden inside the coat and mistakenly believes she has lost them. Shi Fen plays along with the misunderstanding, earning her sympathy and a gift of imported fruit. Realizing the potential, Shi Fen devises a plan and drags Shi Miao to visit other relatives.
They use the same tragic story to trade each gift for a more valuable one, eventually acquiring expensive items like freeze-dried sea cucumbers, despite Shi Miao's protests to stop. Their scamming tour is interrupted when their Sixth Aunt spots them arguing. She chides them for being ill-mannered and takes them to her lavish home, where she and her husband belittle the siblings for their poverty. An angered Shi Miao storms out.
As revenge, Shi Fen flushes the freeze-dried sea cucumbers down the toilet, knowing they will expand and clog the plumbing. Shi Miao is delighted when she finds out about his prank. Later, after selling the remaining gifts for 1,000 yuan, they are cornered by their male cousins, who are angry about the deception. To save her brother, Shi Miao pretends to be Shi Fen's girlfriend, successfully scaring them away.
Afterwards, Shi Fen gives the money to Shi Miao in a red envelope as a graduation trip fund. When she asks for more sparklers, he uses it as an excuse to go home first. There, he discovers their apartment has been ransacked by debt collectors, with "Pay Your Debt" painted on the door and their father bruised and beaten.
Shi Fen realizes his father sent them away to protect them from this and, devastated, decides to keep it a secret from Shi Miao. Shi Miao receives an invitation for New Year's Eve dinner at her friend Miao Miaomiao's house. Shi Fen convinces his sister to go alone, promising to join her later. He stays behind to help his father clean up the apartment. They share a simple meal of frozen dumplings.
When Shi Miao returns, she confronts Shi Fen for lying to her. As they argue, the midnight fireworks begin. They stop to watch the sky, and standing together, they hold hands as they welcome the new year.
