I Am The Years You Are The Stars Recap

Episode 1 Recap

Jiang Baiju, an immortal burdened by a century of secrets, has spent eighty years seeking a way to become a normal human. Meanwhile, Jin Xiaoyu, a mortuary makeup artist who has witnessed countless deaths, faces a rare disease that leaves her with only a year to live. Her sole wish before she dies is to save enough retirement money for her master, Ge Dacheng.

One day, Jin Xiaoyu's electric scooter breaks down, forcing her to take it to a repair shop. Coincidentally, Jiang Baiju, having received a tip about a specific drug, also arrives at the same repair shop. He learns from the repairman that the informant, Gao Guofu, has just boarded a public bus. Jiang Baiju rushes to catch the bus and, once inside, unknowingly encounters Jin Xiaoyu, though he pays her no mind.

Jiang Baiju confronts Gao Guofu, revealing that he knows Gao Guofu was a researcher in the Department of Oncology at a branch of the Central Medical University in 1999, an institution that later closed due to a medical accident. Jiang Baiju demands to know what diseases those patients had and why they vanished after entering the hospital. Gao Guofu, agitated, denies knowing anything.

Jiang Baiju explains he tracked Gao Guofu through tuition payments made for his daughter, all routed through various acquaintances connected to Gao Guofu's repair shop. Realizing he has been found, Gao Guofu grows frantic, grabbing the steering wheel and forcing the bus to a halt. Passengers quickly flee. Jin Xiaoyu, noticing a young girl still on board, bravely pulls her to safety, assuring her, "Don't be afraid. I'll protect you." Gao Guofu then seizes Jin Xiaoyu as a hostage.

Believing her life is short anyway, Jin Xiaoyu signals Jiang Baiju to leave. As police sirens grow louder, Gao Guofu re-boards the bus, and Jiang Baiju pursues. Jin Xiaoyu watches in horror as the bus plunges into the deep sea. She later learns that the bodies from the crash have been sent to the morgue. Before she can fully recover, her master pulls her away to the Traditional Chinese Medicine ward for her own injuries.

While there, Jin Xiaoyu shares with a young man about her rare disease, mentioning she is trying to make money for her master. Shortly after, Officer Su Jiafan arrives to take her statement about the bus incident. Later at the morgue, a family is distraught when their deceased son's body appears to cough.

Jin Xiaoyu, arriving to assist, calmly explains that this is a natural phenomenon called "fake life," caused by gas expulsion from relaxing muscles after death, a common occurrence in emergency situations. She instructs her panicking colleagues to contact the director and ensure proper procedures are followed. Soon, the salvaged bus yields more bodies, including Jiang Baiju and Gao Guofu. Jin Xiaoyu recognizes Jiang Baiju, lamenting that despite saving everyone on the bus, including herself, he met such a tragic end.

She reflects on the unfairness of good deeds sometimes leading to bad outcomes, comparing the "hero" Jiang Baiju with the "wicked" Gao Guofu, noting that neither survived. She quietly expresses her gratitude to Jiang Baiju, wishing him a better, longer, and more peaceful life in his next incarnation. Gao Guofu's daughter arrives to identify his body, appearing eerily calm and expressing no sadness. She recalls her father as a dedicated doctor who often spoke of saving lives.

Jin Xiaoyu, having been on the bus, confirms Gao Guofu almost caused their deaths. She advises the daughter that after death, all earthly emotions become meaningless, and living people should not let the deceased burden their own lives. Unbeknownst to Jin Xiaoyu, Jiang Baiju is the co-founder of the Qing'ai Group, a fashion empire he built with Mrs. Dao, whose family has guarded him for four generations. Mrs. Dao recently passed the guardian role to her grandson, Dao Ruifeng.

That night, as Jin Xiaoyu burns joss paper for her unknown rescuer, Jiang Baiju lies in a corpse box in the morgue, struggling with a painful transformation. Hearing noises, Jin Xiaoyu cautiously approaches the box. Suddenly, something unseen bursts out, knocking her to the ground. The morgue lights flicker wildly. As she tries to call her master, Dao Ruifeng appears and knocks her unconscious. Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng then subdue the violently mutating Jiang Baiju.

When Jiang Baiju eventually regains consciousness, he immediately asks about Jin Xiaoyu. Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng reveal she saw his mutation and argue that she poses a grave risk, insisting she "must be dealt with" or "physically destroyed." Jiang Baiju, however, orders them to "Leave her," causing Dao Ruifeng to jokingly question if it is "love at first sight." Jiang Baiju trusts them to handle the situation discreetly, but Qian Cheng, overwhelmed, declares his intention to resign.

The next morning, Jin Xiaoyu wakes, believing the night's events were a nightmare. Rushing back to the morgue, she discovers Jiang Baiju's body has been claimed by his "family." Upon checking the registration, she finds the name "Qian Jin" and an address for Qing'ai Building.

Realizing that the events were not a dream and that her rescuer is connected to this building, she seeks out her master to confirm details, but he dismisses her concerns, attributing it to her being "out of her mind." Jin Xiaoyu then tries to verify her experience by requesting surveillance footage from the mortuary makeup room for the previous night. The chief, Zhang, informs her that the cameras mysteriously malfunctioned around 11 PM.

Feeling suspicious, Jin Xiaoyu heads to the Qing'ai Group building. At the front desk, she inquires about "Qian Cheng's brother." She learns from the receptionists that "Senior Mr. Qian," whose real name is Qian Tu, is the president of Zhaoyan Tourism Company Group, and he has been on vacation abroad for a week, not dead. This contradicts the name "Qian Jin" and the address listed on the morgue registration for her rescuer.

Later, talking to her friend Cheng Weilan on the phone, Jin Xiaoyu learns that there is no "Qian Jin" in their hospital records and that Qing'ai Group is known for its charity work and its CEO, Qian Cheng, is a decorated hero. Jin Xiaoyu still feels a disconnect, voicing her suspicion that the dead person is not Qian Cheng's actual brother.

Weilan, concerned, suggests Jin Xiaoyu might be experiencing post-traumatic stress, but Jin Xiaoyu remains convinced she witnessed a resurrection and that the conveniently broken surveillance is too coincidental. Jin Xiaoyu then asks about Qing'ai Group's charity positions, before Weilan is called away to an emergency. Back at the morgue, Jin Xiaoyu begins preparing Gao Guofu's body.

She notices anomalies: despite his cause of death being drowning, his body shows no signs of bloating (a "giant's phenomenon") and retains muscle elasticity akin to a living person. Furthermore, his fingernails contain what appears to be toxic residue. Her colleague dismisses her observations, stating that the forensic pathologist had already completed their examination before the body arrived. Jin Xiaoyu, however, insists, "Something is wrong."

Episode 2 Recap

Dao Ruifeng, Qing'ai Group's third-generation designer, was preparing for his individual fashion show debut, drawing numerous media outlets. However, the designs were actually Jiang Baiju's work, who preferred to remain out of sight, letting Dao Ruifeng act as a figurehead. Jin Xiaoyu successfully infiltrated the Qing'ai Building backstage by joining a charity volunteer team. A colleague, aware of Jin Xiaoyu's rare disease, engaged her in conversation.

Jin Xiaoyu confirmed her terminal illness and short lifespan, even jokingly asking for them to attend her funeral. As night fell, the countdown to the fashion show began, but uninvited guests arrived. Qian Tu, Qian Cheng's elder brother, unexpectedly appeared, causing Qian Cheng significant distress. Qian Cheng realized his brother's earlier travel posts on social media were a deliberate distraction to disrupt his plans.

Dao Ruifeng also expressed frustration with Qian Cheng, but then saw his own "nemesis," Xue Wanwan, approaching. Terrified, Dao Ruifeng nervously chugged a glass of wine. Dao Ruifeng knew Xue Wanwan would never allow Qin Rong to be the finale model. With no diamond ring provided by sponsors, he contemplated proposing to Xue Wanwan as a last resort. Jiang Baiju, maintaining his composure while snacking, advised them to remain calm.

He then orchestrated a plan: Qian Cheng would lead security to intercept Xue Wanwan, while Dao Ruifeng would engage Qian Tu with a group of female guests. Jiang Baiju explained that Dao Ruifeng was ineffective against Xue Wanwan due to their shared history, and Qian Cheng, while ruthless with others, hesitated against his own brother. Qian Tu, however, was highly concerned with the family's reputation, making him vulnerable to public embarrassment. Their strategy was to act shamelessly. The plan worked.

Dao Ruifeng introduced Qian Tu to a group of admiring women, presenting him as a wealthy, single big shot in the tourism industry, which effectively distracted Qian Tu. Meanwhile, Qian Cheng confronted Xue Wanwan, who accused them of being liars and stealing an invitation. Qian Cheng warned her to cooperate or face consequences. Despite the chaos, the fashion show was able to proceed. Jiang Baiju, pleased with the outcome, spotted a familiar figure on the surveillance monitors.

Jin Xiaoyu, believing she was getting closer to the truth, found herself trapped in a stalled elevator, isolated and helpless. After a long wait, the elevator finally resumed, bringing her to Jiang Baiju's office, a space filled with intriguing fashion designs. Jiang Baiju, observing her from the shadows, suddenly experienced a bodily mutation. Upon seeing him, Jin Xiaoyu, recognizing him as her savior, embraced him instinctively. Strangely, the physical contact with Jin Xiaoyu halted Jiang Baiju's mutation.

Jin Xiaoyu told Jiang Baiju about her terminal rare disease and her limited time, expressing her strong desire to live for her family. She recounted witnessing his apparent death and resurrection, firmly believing he held the key to her survival. Jiang Baiju agreed to her plea, but on one condition. When asked why she wasn't afraid of him, she reasoned he would have already killed her if he intended to. Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng discussed Jin Xiaoyu.

Qian Cheng suspected she was a dangerous individual, adhering to his 'better kill by mistake than let go' principle. Dao Ruifeng, however, expressed concern for Jin Xiaoyu's safety, noting Jiang Baiju's unusual decision to keep her around and his plan to investigate her alone. Dao Ruifeng also lamented that Dao Lan had immediately retreated after the fashion show, dumping all responsibilities concerning Jiang Baiju onto Qian Cheng.

They decided to conduct their own investigation, believing that if Jin Xiaoyu had hidden support, a dangerous situation would reveal them. Later that night, Jin Xiaoyu led Jiang Baiju to the morgue to see Gao Guofu's body. Jiang Baiju's calm demeanor in front of the deceased puzzled Jin Xiaoyu. She noted that Gao Guofu's blackened fingernails suggested poisoning, not a typical drowning, and his body's unusual elasticity made him seem alive.

Her professional observation indicated he had taken some drug before dying. Jiang Baiju confirmed that Gao Guofu had indeed consumed a "specific drug" sold on the darknet, a substance rumored to cure all ailments and grant immense physical strength. Jiang Baiju explained that his condition for helping Jin Xiaoyu was to investigate the source of this drug. He believed that by understanding its origins and obtaining its formula, he could develop a cure for terminal illnesses, including hers.

Jin Xiaoyu, elated, urged him to act quickly, but he cautioned her about the unpredictable timeline. Just as Jiang Baiju was leaving, two mysterious figures (Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng) appeared. Jiang Baiju quickly returned, safely escorting Jin Xiaoyu away. Before parting, he gave her his phone number, instructing her to use it only in emergencies, as he wouldn't answer otherwise.

Later, at the hospital, Jin Xiaoyu discussed the transfer of a child for organ donation from Zuo'an Hospital with a colleague, who recounted unsettling rumors about the hospital's dark history of human experimentation. Jiang Baiju, suffering a nosebleed from his earlier mutation, came to the hospital for a check-up. Jin Xiaoyu agreed to accompany him to pick up the transferred child in exchange for her silence about his condition.

Simultaneously, police investigators visited the morgue, thanking Jin Xiaoyu's master and her for their critical report on Gao Guofu's body, which prevented crucial evidence from being cremated. Jiang Baiju was found reading a Thai poem, "Phra Aphai Mani," from a book Dao Ruifeng recognized as his grandmother's, borrowed by Jiang Baiju forty years prior. Dao Ruifeng then confronted Jiang Baiju about Jin Xiaoyu, expressing his discomfort with her.

Jiang Baiju questioned Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng's recent actions towards Jin Xiaoyu, and although Qian Cheng attempted to blame Dao Ruifeng, Jiang Baiju sent Qian Cheng home to be with his family, emphasizing his desire to keep them out of trouble. However, Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng insisted they needed to know more as the situation escalated. Pressed for answers, Jiang Baiju revealed the reason he kept Jin Xiaoyu alive: she possesses the unique ability to inhibit his midnight mutations.

Episode 3 Recap

Jiang Baiju informed his close associates, Qian Cheng and another associate, that Jin Xiaoyu could suppress his mutation during the Zi Shi hour. Upon learning this, Qian Cheng grew even more suspicious. He questioned how, after years of searching for a cure, someone capable of stopping Jiang Baiju's mutation could suddenly appear—and so coincidentally, on that particular bus. Qian Cheng suspected Xiaoyu had external backing and might be linked to the mechanic from the bus incident.

Despite these concerns, Jiang Baiju was pleased to have found a way to control his mutation. He instructed Qian Cheng and his associate not to interfere further, asking them to focus on finding clues about the hospital instead, as he did not wish for them to get into trouble on his account. Qian Cheng, feeling punished by this directive, stormed off in frustration. Jiang Baiju then reprimanded his associate for enabling Qian Cheng's impulsive actions.

Later, the associate found Qian Cheng, who was cynical about his role. The associate reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty, stating that he wished to serve as Jiang Baiju's guardian. Dismissing this as overly sentimental, Qian Cheng sarcastically offered to take him to see a doctor. Following this, Jiang Baiju inquired about Qian Cheng's mental state. His associate reported that Qian Cheng had suffered a relapse on his way to the hospital and was uncooperative with his treatment.

Chief Fan, Qian Cheng's doctor, stated that Qian Cheng was withholding information and unwilling to cooperate, noting that his increased desire for control and feelings of persecution would lead him to "eliminate the intruder," implying a potential threat to Jin Xiaoyu. Jiang Baiju acknowledged the stress Qian Cheng felt from constantly watching over them. Later, Jiang Baiju was offered "situational reenactment therapy" to revisit his past.

He asked if a significant "she" from his memories would be part of the recreation. He revealed he had not contacted her in years, and unlike his friends, he never received postcards from her, hinting at a deep longing. However, Chief Fan informed Jiang Baiju's associate that Jiang Baiju was completely uninterested in the therapy, rendering it meaningless due to his lack of cooperation.

Chief Fan observed that Jiang Baiju had entered a "defensive state," characterized by increased stress, refusal to communicate, and subconscious provocative behavior—a condition not seen in many years. He questioned if there had been any recent significant changes in Jiang Baiju's life, such as a new influential figure. Xiaoyu was summoned to Qing'ai Building by Jiang Baiju, only to discover he wanted her to watch an old comedy film with him. He challenged her to watch the film without laughing.

Xiaoyu found herself unable to resist the humor of Stephen Chow's film and burst into laughter. She flirtatiously commented that Jiang Baiju was more handsome than the movie and playfully asked if he had ever dated, to which he replied, "No, because of health issues." She then teased that he might be an alien, unable to experience normal human activities.

Jiang Baiju shared that while Stephen Chow always appeared happy on screen, he was not so in private, a sentiment Xiaoyu also sensed. When asked which movie she would choose to live in forever, she picked "Roman Holiday." Jiang Baiju then mused about the frightening prospect of living a repetitive life, concluding that "the best thing at the end of life is to cease to exist and be forgotten."

As Jiang Baiju finally allowed himself a laugh, he felt a sudden tightness in his chest. He quickly grasped Xiaoyu's hand, which allowed him to genuinely laugh without worry. He recalled a previous instance when watching a comedy film with a foreign family; as they all laughed heartily, he had experienced chest tightness and a suffocating, uncontrollable discomfort, indicating a past struggle with his condition during moments of strong emotion. That night, Xiaoyu stayed with Jiang Baiju as he worked.

He told her she could leave around 1 AM, and she teasingly accused him of grabbing her feet while she slept. He admitted he felt "more secure" with her nearby. She also handed him her medical records, which he promised to review. After a brief, playful exchange about alien medical practices, Jiang Baiju offered her a stack of cash as "overtime pay." This time, however, Xiaoyu indicated she wanted "something else" instead of money.

She instinctively reached out and held his hand, prompting him to turn and face her. He reiterated, "I can only give you money. I really can't give you anything else." Overwhelmed, Xiaoyu quickly left, her heart pounding. Jiang Baiju was equally affected; his own heart raced, and his body grew hot, forcing him to immerse himself in cold water to regain his composure. Xiaoyu hurried from Qing'ai Building to the hospital to pick up her best friend, Cheng Weilan.

Upon entering, she was stopped by a mother and her daughter—the same little girl Xiaoyu had saved on the bus. The mother profusely thanked Xiaoyu. The little girl then unexpectedly revealed that the "madman" (Gao Guofu) had only started to act out after the man who saved them (Jiang Baiju) told him they should cooperate. Xiaoyu was deeply unsettled by this revelation. Before she could fully process the information, Cheng Weilan arrived.

Cheng Weilan enthusiastically showed Xiaoyu a picture of Lin Nuoyan, the new spokesperson for their charity association and the head of a private lab specializing in tissue engineering. She openly admired him as her idol. As they prepared to leave, they became trapped in a malfunctioning elevator. When they managed to pry open the doors, they found themselves on a dark and unfamiliar level, which Xiaoyu deduced was the third basement of the hospital.

They found a locked door, prompting Xiaoyu to climb into an adjacent archive room to bypass it. There, she unexpectedly discovered medical records similar to her own. After quickly photographing the files, Xiaoyu pushed open a door and accidentally struck Lin Nuoyan on the head as he walked past. After settling his medical expenses, the quick-witted Xiaoyu asked for his contact information for potential follow-ups, ostensibly for Cheng Weilan. Lin Nuoyan provided his contact to both of them.

Xiaoyu later met Lin Nuoyan at the morgue, where he had come to respectfully send off deceased body donors after their research use. Xiaoyu, who worked there as a mortuary makeup artist, jokingly offered her own body to his lab after she died. Recalling that Cheng Weilan had mentioned Xiaoyu's rare disease, Lin Nuoyan expressed concern and offered her a free full-body checkup at his lab, also seeing it as an opportunity for his students to study a "new case."

He then prompted her to consider any other wishes she might have, suggesting she make a "last wish list." Taking this idea to heart, Xiaoyu's list included one particular wish: to go on a date with Jiang Baiju. She presented this idea to him, offering to pay. Jiang Baiju, who rarely went out, was hesitant but ultimately succumbed to her playful insistence, especially when she mentioned her limited time left.

He agreed to the date, though privately viewing the outing as an opportunity to test Xiaoyu, as he still harbored suspicions. In a separate conversation, Qian Cheng strongly opposed Jiang Baiju's planned date with Xiaoyu. He suspected it was a trap, possibly for kidnapping or a swindle, and cautioned Jiang Baiju against going. Jiang Baiju, however, calmly explained his reasoning: he intentionally agreed because Qingtang Department Store, their chosen location, was his company's subsidiary, allowing him to monitor her actions.

He also expressed a belief that even if Xiaoyu was involved with the "special drug" group, she was likely being coerced. Elsewhere, Xiaoyu excitedly confided in someone on the phone, likely Cheng Weilan, about her belief that the "handsome guy" who saved her was an alien and that the bus accident was not accidental. She declared her intent to uncover his true identity.

Episode 4 Recap

Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju are shopping, unaware that they are being closely watched. Xiaoyu playfully teases Jiang Baiju about his "posing" style, deeming it "pretentious and sleazy." At a jewelry store, Jiang Baiju buys Xiaoyu a "silver fish" necklace, jokingly referring to it as "a gift for your funeral," reminding her of her limited time. During dinner, Xiaoyu expresses gratitude for the meal and shopping.

Jiang Baiju reminds her she has "no capital to degenerate" because she is "dying," but Xiaoyu wishes to die with a smile and believes Jiang Baiju is a person who likes to lie. Xiaoyu asks Jiang Baiju about his "original name" and "initial appearance." He becomes flustered, takes a drink of water, and claims he has forgotten. After they leave the restaurant, Weilan covertly collects Jiang Baiju's used glass, a move observed by Dao Ruifeng.

Xiaoyu excitedly leads Jiang Baiju to a carousel in the mall, finding the idea of riding one in such a setting "fresh." Jiang Baiju senses Xiaoyu's unusual behavior but follows to avoid alerting her; both are distracted on the carousel. From a distance, Dao Ruifeng informs Qian Cheng that Weilan has entered a "blood collection bus" from the "blood center of the Health Bureau," and he will follow to investigate.

Xiaoyu sees Weilan emerge from a coffee shop and feels relieved. She doesn't notice Dao Ruifeng. Feeling uneasy, Xiaoyu prepares to check on Weilan, but then spots her master approaching with her senior brother, who is going on a blind date. Startled, Xiaoyu quickly hides in Jiang Baiju's arms. Inside the blood collection bus, Weilan attempts to donate blood. She asks a doctor if organ donation is painful. The doctor explains it only occurs when a person is brain-dead.

Weilan then makes a lighthearted remark, claiming, "my heart has already been stolen by you." Shortly after, the samples are stolen. Weilan, distraught, recounts how the samples disappeared after several people came to donate blood. She recalls the thief's parting words: "Your heart has already been stolen by you," finding the phrase familiar. Later, William (Jiang Baiju's brother) praises Jiang Baiju for cleverly leading Xiaoyu's master and her senior brother to the blood collection bus to thwart Xiaoyu's sample collection.

He states it would have been a "real problem" otherwise. Qian Cheng advises against relying on such tactics, but Jiang Baiju simply smiles. Qian Cheng expresses deep suspicion about Xiaoyu, revealing he had her medical records reviewed. They are "very strange," with numerous conflicting symptoms that, according to several doctors, indicate she should have died long ago. He suspects her current medical records are fake, especially comparing them to discrepancies in her past consultations.

Dao Ruifeng supports Qian Cheng's concerns, cautioning Jiang Baiju that Xiaoyu, while inhibiting his mutation, is merely a "painkiller" that doesn't cure his condition and could lead to addiction. Qian Cheng also worries about Xiaoyu's short lifespan. Dao Ruifeng adds that any investigation should be conducted discreetly, without her by Jiang Baiju's side. Jiang Baiju decides to "think about it."

William (Jiang Baiju's brother) approaches Jiang Baiju to discuss a charity project for his company's anniversary, which involves the "Disability Association" and the "Organ Donation Volunteer Association." Jiang Baiju is more interested in work than William's attempts to encourage him towards "re-exposure therapy." Watching Xiaoyu dance to a song, Jiang Baiju is reminded of a graceful singer from his past. Later, while Xiaoyu is with Jiang Baiju, a chandelier unexpectedly falls.

Jiang Baiju swiftly pushes Xiaoyu to safety but injures his leg in the process. Xiaoyu, believing he has broken a bone and sustained flesh wounds, insists he go to the hospital. He refuses, stating he knows his own condition. Qian Cheng enters, visibly angry, and blames Xiaoyu for the incident, calling Jiang Baiju by his full name, which Xiaoyu hears. Jiang Baiju instructs William (his brother) to handle the guests and tells Xiaoyu to get medicine from the bar.

Xiaoyu insists on bandaging his leg, reminding him he was hurt saving her and refuses to leave. Jiang Baiju, to get her to leave, claims he needs to change his pants and dress the wound privately. Jiang Baiju then instructs William (his brother) to collect all the chandelier debris and take it to the basement storage, ensuring "nothing should be left behind." Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng discuss Jiang Baiju.

William (his brother) reveals to Qian Cheng that Jiang Baiju took all his mood control pills and is under immense pressure. Dao Ruifeng jokes about Jiang Baiju's current "stomach problems," indirectly referencing the argument. He also suggests the chandelier incident was "of course not an accident." Jiang Baiju confronts Xiaoyu, demanding to know the person behind her and if the chandelier falling was an accident.

Xiaoyu denies responsibility for the chandelier but admits she intended to collect his blood sample that day. She then demands to know who he is, stating she no longer trusts him. Xiaoyu asserts her suspicion that William (Jiang Baiju's brother) and Qian Cheng were the ones who attacked her on a previous night, having recognized their perfume. She believes the three of them conspired to gain her trust.

Xiaoyu explains her distrust further, pointing out Jiang Baiju's past conversation with the "madman" on the bus and the subsequent disappearance of surveillance footage. She confirms that the medical records she provided were indeed fake, explaining she couldn't reveal all her information. Jiang Baiju scoffs, questioning what she possesses that would warrant such an elaborate deception, beyond her appearance and wealth. He suggests that her "people behind her" are likely already investigating him.

Xiaoyu declares that if he can harm her, he can harm her family, and she will not permit that. Jiang Baiju retaliates, threatening to expose "the people behind her" if she continues. Xiaoyu counters by revealing her safeguard: she has collected numerous photos and videos of him during their shared working hours and has composed a suicide note with a timed release. If she dies, his story will be publicly disseminated across various media platforms.

Acknowledging her resourcefulness, Jiang Baiju agrees to a mutual cessation of hostilities. Xiaoyu proposes they each take a step back and return to being strangers. She outlines their terms: he will not harass her family, and she will not release the incriminating evidence. They part ways. Jiang Baiju, enraged, immerses himself in cold water to calm down. Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng retrieve him.

In the process, Dao Ruifeng accidentally breaks Jiang Baiju's ribs, leading to a comedic threat from Jiang Baiju. Despite the pain, Jiang Baiju states he will recover quickly. Xiaoyu, feeling perpetually watched, suddenly collapses due to a nosebleed. She regains consciousness in a hospital room, surrounded by familiar medical staff. Her master has gone to get her food, while Weilan sleeps on a nearby sofa, exhausted from staying up all night to save her.

The medical team celebrates saving Xiaoyu for the 68th time. Later, Xiaoyu attends an organ donation volunteer event. Weilan is thrilled to meet her idol, Professor Lin Nuoyan, the association's convener. At the event, Xiaoyu meets Fu Liang. He shares a poignant story, revealing that Weilan was the doctor who tried to save his fiancee, who died in a car accident 16 months and 4 days prior, just after their engagement.

Weilan also asked him about organ donation at that time. Officer Su arrives at the event and speaks to Xiaoyu via phone. He informs her that the vehicle transporting Gao Guofu's remains was involved in a highly suspicious accident. The driver is dead, the vehicle is destroyed, and Gao Guofu's body was completely incinerated, eliminating all major leads in the case.

Officer Su urges Xiaoyu to recall any significant details from the original bus accident and warns her to be vigilant, avoid solitary activities, and return home early. Xiaoyu notes that Officer Su is good-looking. While getting more water for the event, Xiaoyu finds ice cream, which brings back childhood memories. She offers to treat Fu Liang, playfully stating it's compensation for a past incident.

Episode 5 Recap

Jiang Baiju was discreetly observing Xiaoyu when the newsstand owner, noticing he had been browsing for a while, became impatient. Left with no choice, Jiang Baiju bought all the magazines, satisfying the owner. Suddenly, Xiaoyu appeared behind him, startling him. The two immediately fell into an argument, which the newsstand owner mistook for a lovers' spat. Jiang Baiju tried to explain, but the owner urged him to pay, cutting short his attempt at clarification.

Later, Xiaoyu told a friend that she had run into "a man with a grudge against me" and wished she had "sold him to Officer Su." Jiang Baiju's investigation led him to a man who made fake ID cards. Initially, the man denied it, but under the intimidating presence of Qian Tu, he confessed to making fake documents for Gao Guofu more than once.

He confirmed that Gao Guofu had previously used the name Chen Ziqiang, but that identity was compromised, leading him to use Li Changcheng. The man also recalled an acquaintance of Gao Guofu named Zhao Shan, whom Gao Guofu called "Shan-ge." He suspected Zhao Shan was a veterinarian because his usually aggressive dog would behave well around him, and he had a hospital smell.

Jiang Baiju struck a deal with Qian Tu: if Qian Tu helped him find Zhao Shan, Jiang Baiju would grant Qian Cheng a holiday. Qian Tu agreed, though annoyed that the target of the search had changed. Jiang Baiju then instructed that Qian Cheng and William stay out of this new investigation. Meanwhile, Xiaoyu had shared her medical records online, receiving numerous suggestions. This led her to a suspicious clinic run by an illegal doctor.

She and Lin Nuoyan went to investigate. Upon arriving, they learned from a resident that the area was undergoing demolition, leaving only the small clinic from which "screams came from that place at night. . . like a haunted place." Xiaoyu suggested she go in alone, but Lin Nuoyan, calling himself "Advanced Worker Lin Nuoyan" after Xiaoyu jokingly called herself "Little King of Hell," refused to let a woman venture into such a place by herself.

He also dismissed her online research about a former tenant falling to his death from the building. The clinic had an eerie atmosphere. Peeking through a door, Xiaoyu and Lin Nuoyan saw two men behaving strangely inside a patient room. When they heard a noise, they quickly hid. Once the coast was clear, Xiaoyu, posing as a patient, entered the consultation room and showed the doctor a photo.

Seeing it, the doctor became flustered but tried to compose himself, offering to show Xiaoyu the hospital's operating license. From his hiding spot, Lin Nuoyan prepared to intervene when he saw the doctor about to attack Xiaoyu. However, a care worker suddenly appeared, and in the confusion, the doctor escaped. Xiaoyu pursued him to the balcony, where he cornered her. In desperation, she grabbed a brick and struck him.

Bleeding from his forehead, the enraged doctor threw Xiaoyu off the balcony. Xiaoyu desperately clung to the building, screaming for help. Just as she was about to fall, Jiang Baiju appeared as if from nowhere, catching her in mid-air and gently telling her to close her eyes. He landed with a thud, taking the full impact of the fall as a "meat cushion" for Xiaoyu. Blood poured from his mouth, and Xiaoyu cried out in distress.

Suddenly, Jiang Baiju began to move. His body twisted and folded unnaturally as he slowly rose, resembling a reanimated corpse. Terrified, Xiaoyu fainted. When Xiaoyu awoke from a nightmare to Jiang Baiju's face, she burrowed under the covers in fright. She nervously asked about Lin Nuoyan, fearing Jiang Baiju might have harmed him. Jiang Baiju assured her that Lin Nuoyan was fine, having woken up and gone to the hospital himself.

He warned Xiaoyu not to pursue the hospital investigation, emphasizing its dangerous connections, and urged her to forget what she saw. He also noted that her "law-abiding Professor Lin" had likely already called the police. Though still wary, Xiaoyu thanked him. Meanwhile, the injured doctor, Zhao Shan, regained consciousness. He too had witnessed Jiang Baiju's resurrection and was contacted by a mysterious person via text message proposing a collaboration. Fascinated by the revival, Zhao Shan readily agreed.

Elsewhere, Qian Tu and William reported to a woman they call "Grandma." Qian Tu revealed that William's father had obtained a darknet wanted notice from France, indicating that Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu had become targets. William tried to blame Xiaoyu and Qian Cheng for the predicament, but "Grandma" dismissed his excuses, demanding all of Xiaoyu's information within five minutes.

At a university lab, Xiaoyu sat as a case study for Lin Nuoyan's eager medical students, who were determined to find a cure for her rare, unnamed illness. In gratitude, Lin Nuoyan gave her a reverse-flow incense burner. As the incense burned, smoke flowed downwards, enchanting Xiaoyu. Lin Nuoyan offered a philosophical reflection, suggesting that just as incense can flow differently, sometimes changing one's path can lead to more beautiful scenery.

A flashback to ten years prior showed Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng as young friends. Qian Cheng harbored feelings for a girl named Ye Lai, and Dao Ruifeng often encouraged him to confess. One day, Ye Lai was attacked by assailants. Qian Cheng rushed to her rescue but was outnumbered and kidnapped along with her. Dao Ruifeng, arriving shortly after, could only call Jiang Baiju for help.

Episode 6 Recap

Jin Xiaoyu had previously seen news of Qian Cheng's heroic action online, which referred to a recent incident. At that time, Qian Cheng and Ye Lai were kidnapped together. Qian Cheng, being resourceful, had a hidden cellphone and managed to call Qian Tu. The location of the warehouse was then found. When the kidnappers were distracted by money, Qian Cheng seized the opportunity to escape with Ye Lai.

As the perpetrators pursued them relentlessly, Qian Cheng decided to hide Ye Lai in a room to wait for rescue, while he alone diverted the kidnappers. Qian Cheng, still a student then, was no match for the ruthless criminals. Just as he was falling from a height, Jiang Baiju swiftly rushed forward, acting as a human cushion for him. Qian Cheng sustained injuries, breaking an arm and a leg, and was hospitalized for three months.

Although he fully recovered physically, the traumatic experience left him with post-traumatic stress disorder. Dao Ruifeng drove Xiaoyu to a sanatorium, where she met his grandmother, Madam Dao, a woman with white hair but still retaining her charm. Madam Dao showed Xiaoyu a yellowed photo album filled with pictures of herself and Jiang Baiju. Recalling the past, her face was filled with joy.

Yet, a trace of sadness flickered in her eyes as she thought of Jiang Baiju, who, despite living for so many years, had never truly integrated into ordinary life. He couldn't experience the joys and sorrows of existence, and for him, concepts like kinship, love, and friendship only brought more pain. The gift of immortality, she mused, only made him an eternal observer.

Madam Dao then presented an agreement, hoping that Xiaoyu would accompany Jiang Baiju for the remainder of her life. Xiaoyu hesitated, even though she desired a large sum of money, signing the agreement meant accepting Madam Dao's arrangements for her future. Madam Dao revealed that Jiang Baiju's entire life had been one of constant vigilance; she had never seen him truly sad or joyful.

He seemed to be perpetually searching for answers, trapping himself in what she described as a "black-and-white horror movie." While Madam Dao couldn't stop the narrative, she believed Xiaoyu could press the pause button and even add color to his monochrome existence. Jiang Baiju enjoyed colorful things, he liked to observe people laughing and crying, and he was drawn to flashy, beautiful objects.

These experiences made him feel a sense of connection with ordinary people, making him feel like a regular person with desires and flaws. After much contemplation, Xiaoyu decided to sign the agreement, curious to discover what kind of person Jiang Baiju truly was. Upon learning that Xiaoyu would be living with them, Jiang Baiju appeared flustered.

He strongly opposed her presence, but Xiaoyu asserted her right to stay, as she had signed a contract with Dao Xiuxiu (Madam Dao), who owned the property. Jiang Baiju retorted that since she was moving in, she would be responsible for all the household chores, including the vast yard, as he did not like outsiders doing chores and felt her large payment from Dao Xiuxiu should cover it.

Xiaoyu countered that she intended to work until her last breath and jested that she might even die in his arms while watching a movie. Later that night, Xiaoyu went to get water and unexpectedly encountered Jiang Baiju. He gave her a piercing look, questioning why she would sell herself for money. Startled, Xiaoyu hurried away. As she was drifting off to sleep, the distinct sound of wolves howling filled the air.

She got up to investigate and found Dao Ruifeng standing outside her door. He handed her a pair of earplugs, explaining that the remote suburbs often had wild animals, and then he left, promising to show her the secrets of the yard once she settled in. Later, Fu Liang and Weilan visited Cai Miao's grave, where they unexpectedly found Xiaoyu.

Xiaoyu recognized Cai Miao's photograph, realizing she had performed the restorative makeup on her after the car accident, which had left Cai Miao unrecognizable. Fu Liang expressed his deep gratitude to Xiaoyu for allowing Cai Miao to have a dignified farewell. Xiaoyu believed that every life deserved to conclude in its most beautiful form. Weilan added that knowing Cai Miao's heart was still beating in another person made her less sad. Meanwhile, Tan Yueran attended a follow-up hospital appointment.

The doctor expressed concern over her health indicators, which had worsened since her mother returned home, and noted her Human Leukocyte Antigen antibody positive rate was high. Tan Yueran admitted she hadn't been sleeping well and was experiencing frequent dreams. The doctor recommended she discuss this with Director Fan, explaining that organ transplant rejection could be psychological as well as physical.

During her session with Director Fan, Tan Yueran shared a news story about an Australian heart recipient who developed a strong craving for burgers and fries, mirroring the preferences of the 18-year-old donor. She mentioned research from Arizona State University indicating that a significant number of organ recipients undergo personality changes, some even adopting traits of their donors, and raised the question of whether they become different people.

Director Fan reassured her that one organ alone isn't enough to completely change a person, attributing Tan Yueran's dreams of a handsome man to her improved health and age for dating, suggesting that "love is also the heart's driving force." Later, Tan Yueran saw a flyer for organ donation and noticed Jin Xiaoyu was listed as a contact person and volunteer for the project.

She made inquiries, learning that while donors fill out forms, final consent rests with their families, and that Xiaoyu was indeed the project head and a volunteer. Back at Buwenzhong, Qian Cheng and Dao Ruifeng were in the kitchen when Xiaoyu presented a folk remedy her master had prepared for her: toad skin. Dao Ruifeng was appalled, while Qian Cheng complained about being bitten by Jiang Baiju's "house-blessing turtle." They questioned Xiaoyu about a new goose in the yard.

Jiang Baiju, who was visibly afraid of the goose, joined the others in confronting Xiaoyu. Xiaoyu explained that her master had brought the goose, thinking her new home was a bungalow. Feeling guilty for the commotion caused by the various creatures and the toad skin, Xiaoyu offered to take on all the chores for the next two days.

Jiang Baiju initially insisted she leave, but Qian Cheng quickly accepted her offer, agreeing that they could "chuck her out" after she completed her tasks. As a result, Xiaoyu was soon found cooking for the group.

Episode 7 Recap

At a coffee shop, Fu Liang encountered his former classmate, Gu Xiaole, who was on a blind date with Zhang Quanzhan, a senior colleague of Jin Xiaoyu. Gu Xiaole, a clean freak, openly declared that she had only stood outside the funeral home when her own grandfather passed away, never daring to enter. Upon hearing this, Zhang Quanzhan's expression faltered as he admitted he was a mortuary makeup artist, leading Gu Xiaole to promptly excuse herself.

Seeing Zhang Quanzhan's dejected state, Fu Liang offered words of comfort, reminding him to treat himself well and giving him a hotpot discount coupon from Jin Xiaoyu, intended for a celebratory meal if the date went well, or a solo treat if it failed. Zhang Quanzhan confirmed he was still interested in women, despite the setback. Meanwhile, Tan Yueran met with Jin Xiaoyu, inquiring about her heart donor.

Jin Xiaoyu, maintaining a professional demeanor, reiterated the legal regulations for human organ transplantation, which strictly prohibit medical personnel from disclosing personal information about donors or recipients. Tan Yueran, a computer science PhD, acknowledged her awareness of the regulations, citing Article 27 of the deceased donor transplants regulations. However, she appealed to Jin Xiaoyu, arguing that as a non-medical professional, she might be able to help.

She explained her long struggle with congenital heart disease, constant hospitalizations, and how the donated heart had given her a normal life. She had heard the donor was a young girl who died in a car accident and yearned to express her gratitude to the family, even offering to leverage her academic and professional credentials to promote volunteer associations. Jin Xiaoyu gently declined, explaining that such public meetings were highly selective, and Tan Yueran’s intense desire might be a disqualifier.

She further elaborated that while Tan Yueran's intentions might be good, disclosing information could be a burden or cause distress to others, using an analogy of ordering coffee for someone who cannot drink it due to a serious rare disease. At the funeral home, Tan Yueran approached Zhang Quanzhan, exchanging WeChat details with him. Zhang Quanzhan, beaming with excitement, told Jin Xiaoyu that a "girl" had added him, completely oblivious to Tan Yueran's ulterior motives.

Jin Xiaoyu, unimpressed, tried to make him see reason, pointing out that the funeral home was hardly a place for romance and that Tan Yueran was merely a PhD collecting data, not a potential girlfriend. Zhang Quanzhan, however, was smitten, convinced it was destiny. Jin Xiaoyu then called her friend Weilan, expressing her unease about Tan Yueran’s presence at the funeral home and Zhang Quanzhan so readily giving out his personal information.

Weilan, concerned, suggested that Tan Yueran might be experiencing a "psychological rejection" symptom and promised to follow up with Chief Zhou about Tan Yueran's therapist, advising Jin Xiaoyu to handle Tan Yueran carefully during her recovery period. Jiang Baiju questioned Jin Xiaoyu about the secrecy surrounding donor information. Jin Xiaoyu explained the international "double-blind principle," designed to alleviate emotional stress for both parties.

She cited Princess Diana's organ donations, noting that recipients would be overwhelmed if they knew the organs were from royalty. Secondly, it prevents "the ugliness of human nature," as exemplified by a friend who faced harassment after his bone marrow donation information was leaked when he changed his mind. Lastly, it guards against organ trafficking, using Steve Jobs' liver transplant as a hypothetical scenario where donor families might exploit the situation.

Jiang Baiju jokingly responded to the idea of someone harming Jin Xiaoyu, threatening to cook her turtle and goose and turn her room into his art studio if she were harmed, before Jin Xiaoyu called him a "dummy" but also "cool." In a later incident, Tan Yueran appeared in Jin Xiaoyu's office, ostensibly to fix their computer, having been invited by the unsuspecting Zhang Quanzhan.

Jin Xiaoyu, angered by Tan Yueran's presence, refused to be friendly, explicitly stating there was no "misunderstanding" between them and that she would not help her obtain any information, even as she accepted the milk tea Tan Yueran offered. Zhang Quanzhan, completely misreading the situation, believed Jin Xiaoyu’s hostility stemmed from jealousy because she had a crush on him. Tan Yueran discreetly copied data from the computer under the guise of needing wet wipes.

Another colleague, observing Jin Xiaoyu's irritation, remarked that women often have a better sense of other women's true intentions, suggesting Tan Yueran might not be a good person, but Zhang Quanzhan remained convinced Jin Xiaoyu was simply jealous. Through this deceptive act, Tan Yueran successfully accessed the donor, Cai Miao's, information. Later, while preparing a deceased's body, Jin Xiaoyu noticed alarming inconsistencies.

The official police report stated the cause of death as hypoglycemia due to starvation, yet the body exhibited cyanosis, a clear indicator of heart failure. She pointed out that typical low blood sugar symptoms such as palpitations, panic, cold limbs, and in chronic cases, brain atrophy, mental disorder, or epilepsy, did not align with a peaceful death while playing video games. The deceased also had asymmetrical facial muscles and bitten lips, strongly suggesting a history of epilepsy.

Jin Xiaoyu argued that an epileptic patient would likely experience seizures long before succumbing to hypoglycemia. Her colleague, however, dismissed her observations as baseless, comparing her to "Detective Conan" and insisting on proceeding with the cremation scheduled for the next morning. Jin Xiaoyu then discovered the body's unusual elasticity, strikingly similar to a previous case involving Gao Guofu, further solidifying her suspicions and prompting her to suggest delaying the cremation.

Tan Yueran once again appeared at the funeral home, continuing to engage with Zhang Quanzhan. She thanked him for his help in gathering information and their conversations. During their chat, she inquired about Jin Xiaoyu’s work and how challenging it must be for men in their profession to find partners, subtly sounding out his vulnerabilities while praising the job's stability and benefits. Zhang Quanzhan expressed his concern that women might only be interested in the benefits, not true affection.

Tan Yueran reassured him he was a kind and good man, and just as Zhang Quanzhan, looking for genuine interest, asked her, "Are you a discerning girl?" , Jin Xiaoyu abruptly intervened. Jin Xiaoyu confronted Tan Yueran, warning her against harming Zhang Quanzhan. Still deluded, Zhang Quanzhan misinterpreted Jin Xiaoyu's anger as jealousy and tried to get her to leave.

Frustrated by Zhang Quanzhan's naivety, Jin Xiaoyu sought advice from Dao Ruifeng on how to reveal a manipulative woman’s true intentions. Dao Ruifeng explained that individuals often fail to recognize manipulative partners because they have limited options, likening it to the "ten-thousand-hour principle" in practice. Jin Xiaoyu then noticed Dao Ruifeng’s computer, revealing he was writing a serialized novel about an immortal man and a terminally ill girl, clearly inspired by her and Jiang Baiju.

After some playful banter about the novel's title and content, Dao Ruifeng, to encourage Jin Xiaoyu to cook, promised to add a devoted and faithful male secondary character who was obsessed with her. They humorously debated the character's physical traits, ultimately settling on a warm-smiling, cat-loving man in a black turtleneck sweater. Later, Jin Xiaoyu learned from Weilan that Tan Yueran's heart donor was none other than Cai Miao, Fu Liang's ex-girlfriend.

Weilan recounted Cai Miao's death in a car accident two years prior, how she (Weilan) was the attending doctor, and how Fu Liang had helped persuade Cai Miao's parents to donate her organs. Weilan acknowledged that it was normal for recipients to be curious about their donors, but Tan Yueran's persistent inquiries were unusual and concerning.

Weilan had informed Chief Zhou but stressed the lack of concrete evidence and the critical importance of not informing Fu Liang, as it would violate regulations and they didn't know if Tan Yueran had already contacted him. Jin Xiaoyu connected Tan Yueran’s initial harassment of Zhang Quanzhan and her sudden disappearance from his life to Weilan's theory: either Zhang Quanzhan did not possess the information Tan Yueran sought, or she had already found it elsewhere.

In a flashback to three years ago, a cold winter night found Cai Miao, a scriptwriter, eating strong-smelling river snail rice noodles outside Fu Liang’s coffee shop, having just left a long company meeting with a dead phone and only a small amount of cash. Fu Liang, with a kind gesture, invited her inside to eat, jokingly saying he would tell customers the next day that the toilet was clogged to explain the lingering smell.

He also provided her with a hot drink. Cai Miao shared her story of being a rookie scriptwriter, exhausted and nearly starved, unable to call a taxi or use a shared power bank due to her dead phone. Fu Liang helped charge her phone and offered advice on preparedness. She then enthusiastically described a complex, imaginative TV series plot her client desired.

In the present, Tan Yueran appeared outside Fu Liang's coffee shop, holding a cup of river snail rice noodles, seeking a hot drink, but the shop was closed, creating a striking parallel to Cai Miao’s past experience.

Episode 8 Recap

Since parting ways with Ms. Luosifen, Mr. Coffee would often think of her. Their first encounter was so special, or perhaps the lingering scent of luosifen was just too strong, but for many days afterward, the coffee shop carried the distinct aroma of the noodle dish. Their second meeting occurred half a year later when Ms. Luosifen, identified as Miao by her friends, brought them to the coffee shop to celebrate her first co-writing credit for a 36-episode web series.

Miao’s friends noticed that Mr. Coffee, the co-owner of the shop, gave her an extra-large shaved ice with special toppings. They playfully teased her about having a boyfriend who worked there, but Miao denied it. However, she thanked Mr. Coffee for the special treat and apologized for her friends' teasing, to which he replied that he wished their words were true.

He then flirtatiously asked if she had come to make their relationship official and why she hadn't visited since their last meeting, playfully calling her "Girlfriend." Miao defensively asked if he called all female customers his "girlfriends," but he clarified he only said that to "the girl who asked for hot water" while closing shop.

Feeling flustered, Miao quickly ran back to her seat, while Mr. Coffee inwardly wondered if his advances would make her keep her distance or if she would find them endearing. Elsewhere, Tan Yueran was listening to an audio novel about Ms. Luosifen and Mr. Coffee, eventually drifting off into a dream where she became Ms. Luosifen. In her dream, Tan Yueran entered the lab where two male colleagues were discreetly eating their lunchboxes, a clear violation of lab rules.

Normally, Tan Yueran would report such behavior to the professor, but this time, to their surprise, she not only let it slide but also demanded half of their food, complaining that her own healthy meal was tasteless. The colleagues, noticing her uncharacteristic behavior and cheerful demeanor, joked that she must be in love. Tan Yueran confirmed she had someone she liked and offered to introduce them if they treated her to a meal.

They agreed, and she took them to the same coffee shop that perfectly matched the novel’s description. There, Tan Yueran proudly pointed out the barista, Fu Liang, as her crush, who was also the owner of the shop. While at the coffee shop, Zhang Quanzhan called Tan Yueran, explaining he was near her school and asking to meet. Tan Yueran gave him a brief, vague response and quickly hung up, mentioning she was out for food with her seniors.

Her accompanying male colleagues then jokingly called Fu Liang "Brother-in-law." Fu Liang was displeased by this and asked Tan Yueran to clarify their relationship. However, Tan Yueran was in no hurry to explain, instead playfully deflecting his questions and even calling him "Brother-in-law" herself before leaving.

Meanwhile, Jin Xiaoyu had been investigating Tan Yueran and found discrepancies between her official profile, which described her as an extremely introverted individual with congenital heart disease and severe social anxiety, and her current outgoing personality, which included striking up conversations with men at the funeral home and treating others to milk tea. Jin Xiaoyu suspected this was not the same person. During a shopping trip with Jiang Baiju, Jin Xiaoyu was captivated by a veil displayed on a model.

Jiang Baiju, noticing her delight, tenderly placed the veil on her head, commenting that she looked like a bride, and then took a picture for her to remember the moment. Just then, Qian Cheng, who had been given a week off, burst in, furious with Jiang Baiju for using him as a bargaining chip in a deal with his brother. Jiang Baiju quickly pulled Jin Xiaoyu aside to hide.

After Qian Cheng stormed off, Jin Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju shared a hearty laugh, and the atmosphere between them grew intimate. Later, Jiang Baiju observed Jin Xiaoyu accompanying Lin Nuoyan on a tour of the funeral home, which made him visibly jealous.

From a hiding spot, he watched as Lin Nuoyan demonstrated his expertise by explaining the complex mechanisms of ascites in a cadaver and complimented Jin Xiaoyu's professionalism, prompting her to jokingly tell him not to be so sentimental in such a setting. Muttering to himself, Jiang Baiju called Lin Nuoyan "an animal in a suit."

After Lin Nuoyan departed, Jiang Baiju appeared and confronted Jin Xiaoyu, sarcastically asking if dating at a funeral home was how "earthlings" conducted their relationships and questioning why she was meeting with "that perverted professor." Jiang Baiju then somberly stated that he couldn't accompany anyone, and neither could she, as they were both "abnormal beings" in the eyes of "normal people." Jin Xiaoyu retorted that he was an old, ill-mannered man.

After Lin Nuoyan departed, Jiang Baiju, still in a bad mood, took Jin Xiaoyu to the grave of his old friend, Chen Zhongshun. Jiang Baiju explained that Chen was his classmate and a comrade for a month in bootcamp. Chen later joined the navy and remained in Taiwan after the war. His lifelong dream was to return home, but Jiang Baiju could only fulfill that wish after Chen's death.

As Jiang Baiju recounted their history, he revealed that he and Chen had both admired a singer named Chen Mansha at Paramount in their youth. However, Chen Zhongshun later fell truly in love with Ms. Qin Xiangjun. Despite being engaged, Chen insisted on joining the army, which led to Ms. Qin marrying another man. They never reunited in life. Chen had always yearned to know how Ms. Qin was doing, even while fearing the answer.

Jiang Baiju, in a bittersweet gesture, arranged Chen's tomb to be "two aisles apart" from Ms. Qin's, hoping they could at least observe each other in the afterlife. Jin Xiaoyu criticized this arrangement as "poor taste," but Jiang Baiju found it "fun," claiming she simply didn't understand men. In a different conversation, two doctors discussed Tan Yueran. They noted that her recent disinterest in contacting Jin Xiaoyu was suspicious.

They were concerned about her heightened curiosity regarding the organ donor, which wasn't new. Tan Yueran had previously complained of sleeplessness and dreaming of a boy, a fact also mentioned by Chief Fan, though the identity of the boy remained unclear. They further discussed the psychological challenges organ recipients face in accepting another's organ. They then observed a twelve-year-old congenital heart disease patient nicknamed Cutie.

Tan Yueran, once quiet, had become lively after her successful heart transplant, but Cutie's condition worsened, leaving her dispirited. Despite her despair, Cutie maintained a positive attitude, calling her fate and earning the nickname "Zen girl." One of the doctors found the scene too upsetting and was called "soft-hearted" for wanting to leave. Meanwhile, in a flashback, Fu Liang and Cai Miao were on their first date, attempting to ride a shared bicycle.

When the chain broke, Cai Miao, whose family once owned a motorcycle repair shop, easily fixed it, joking that it was "nothing." Fu Liang expressed his desire to be "all-capable" for her, but Cai Miao reassured him that they just needed to do what they were good at. She playfully called him "kitty" as he teased her with "the touch of love."

They reflected on their future, with Cai Miao poignantly stating that while he wouldn't be with her for her whole life, she would be with him, and while she wouldn't grow old with him, he would. Later, Jin Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju found themselves lying in the morgue, with Jin Xiaoyu simulating Jiang Baiju's past experience of being brought there. Jiang Baiju joked if she hadn't "died enough," and Jin Xiaoyu expressed her desire for a normal, quick death.

Jiang Baiju confessed he was there to "experience what it feels like to lie next to you." He then shared his personal philosophy: as someone close to death, Jin Xiaoyu wished her potential partner would move on and find new love after her passing. However, Jiang Baiju, drawing from his own "experienced" perspective, suggested that her wish might be "only her wish," as beautiful things would constantly remind him of her, making it difficult to start anew.

Jin Xiaoyu asked Jiang Baiju if he had ever truly loved anyone in his long life, besides his parents. He cryptically replied, "my clients," adding that "every Party A is my true love." Jin Xiaoyu then directly asked if he had never been in love. He responded with a wry "Are you impressed?" and "Does it not seem that way?"

Episode 9 Recap

In the morgue, Jin Xiaoyu confided in Jiang Baiju, reminiscing about her childhood dream of being cured. She had believed that recovery would bring countless wonderful days, making her just like a normal person. However, as she grew up, she realized that even after being cured, she would still be an ordinary person, facing mundane tasks like working and blind dates. She concluded that being cured was nothing extraordinary, simply making her "just a normal person."

Yet, she admitted that sometimes she couldn't help but envy normal people. Jiang Baiju, moved by her words, confessed that he too longed for an ordinary life. Suddenly, Jin Xiaoyu leaned closer, proposing they try dating like normal people. Jiang Baiju's heart began to pound intensely, on the verge of triggering a mutation, so he quickly took her hand to regain his composure. As the atmosphere grew intimate, Master unexpectedly entered the operation room.

Jin Xiaoyu quickly covered Jiang Baiju with a cloth, attempting to hide him. Master, unaware of Jiang Baiju, left after a brief, confused exchange with Jin Xiaoyu about seeing a "handsome guy." Meanwhile, Qian Cheng and Qian Tu were enjoying a round of golf at their newly developed resort. Their game was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Mrs. Dao, who had been sent by William to pick up Qian Cheng.

Qian Tu cleverly diverted her attention by suggesting she tour the anniversary celebration venue, which Mrs. Dao readily agreed to, seemingly forgetting her original intention to fetch Qian Cheng. Later, William, Jiang Baiju's current guardian, led Jin Xiaoyu into a dark, eerie secret room within the study for her guardianship ritual. Before they entered, William explained that the Dao family had protected Jiang Baiju for eighty years, and Jin Xiaoyu was the first non-family guardian.

He informed her that from 11 PM to 1 AM, she must not leave Jiang Baiju's side, no matter what transpired, as this two-hour ritual would formalize her guardianship. William ominously suggested she might be the shortest-serving guardian, dependent on her short lifespan. Once inside, Jin Xiaoyu inadvertently stumbled upon another hidden chamber, filled with various restraint devices. Startled and realizing the room's grim purpose, she attempted to flee, but the door sealed shut.

At Zi Shi, Jiang Baiju, now in a maniacal state, chased Jin Xiaoyu relentlessly. She stumbled, trapped, but seeing Jiang Baiju's struggle to contain himself and avoid harming her, she softly called his name. Her words broke through his frenzy, and he slowly returned to his human form. Witnessing his agony, Jin Xiaoyu held his face, her eyes full of heartache, feeling a deep compassion. It was in this moment that she embraced her role as his guardian.

Jiang Baiju then revealed his past: On November 30th, 1938, he was tasked with transporting crucial blueprints to Southern Yunnan for airport construction. His plane was shot down by Japanese forces, and he parachuted into the deep valleys of Shenlong Snow Mountain. It was there that his nightly mutations began. He further explained that any strong emotion, whether joy or sorrow, caused his heart to pound rapidly, triggering the painful transformation.

He also revealed that after escaping Shenlong Snow Mountain, he rescued the Dao family's ancestor, Dao Xiuxiu's father, which led to the Dao family's centuries-long guardianship. Separately, outside the secret room, William and his assistant discussed Mrs. Dao's strategy and William's own plan. William explained his grandmother's intent to use Jin Xiaoyu as a temporary guardian due to her short lifespan, intending for William to resume the role after Jin Xiaoyu's demise.

Defying his grandmother's instruction to observe from outside, William decided to release Jiang Baiju from the hibernation chamber to frighten Jin Xiaoyu into quitting. He reasoned that while Jiang Baiju knew Jin Xiaoyu could suppress his mutation, Jin Xiaoyu herself did not. In this same conversation, William also recounted family lore: during a turbulent wartime, Jiang Baiju had saved his great-grandfather multiple times, even seemingly dying and reviving during these acts.

Out of gratitude, his great-grandfather swore that the Dao family would protect their savior for generations. William admitted he knew nothing of Jiang Baiju's true nature, origin, or ultimate fate, only that the encounter occurred at Shenlong Snow Mountain, a place rumored to contain a secluded village. He speculated that Jiang Baiju might originate from this village, and perhaps Jin Xiaoyu, being the only one capable of suppressing his mutations, might also hail from there.

He added that Mrs. Dao had visited the Snow Mountain decades ago but found no clues, as the landscape had changed beyond recognition. Later, William spoke with Mrs. Dao, who called him "child," about the guardianship. William tried to persuade her to appoint Qian Cheng as the guardian instead of Jin Xiaoyu, emphasizing Qian Cheng's loyalty and his reluctance to see his "brother" sacrificed.

Mrs. Dao, however, remained resolute, citing her duty to protect Jiang Baiju at all costs, a lesson passed down from her own father to use "any means necessary." She admitted she was a "selfish old woman" who might go to hell, but for Jiang Baiju and her family's children, she was willing. She also pragmatically stated that sacrificing a sick child like Jin Xiaoyu was "more cost-effective" than healthy young people.

Jin Xiaoyu, now fully embracing her role as Jiang Baiju's "painkiller" and guardian, playfully asserted her authority, demanding his cooperation in finding clues for her own illness. Despite his fear of renewed disappointment after a century of fruitless searching, she insisted that they work together, urging him not to give up hope. William later spoke to Qian Tu on the phone, confirming that certain arrangements had been made regarding Qian Cheng's extended "vacation."

Jiang Baiju met Jin Xiaoyu again, surprising her. She playfully accused him of stalking, but he dismissed it, handing her surveillance footage from a convenience store in the downtown village, hoping it would be useful in her investigation concerning Tan Yueran. Jin Xiaoyu noted that the new cameras suggested someone had anticipated Jiang Baiju's presence. Jiang Baiju, however, appeared indifferent, even expressing a desire for death. He simply advised Jin Xiaoyu to be cautious.

At the coffee shop, Tan Yueran had successfully redesigned the promotional webpage, earning considerable gratitude from Fu Liang, whose demeanor towards her had significantly softened. Jin Xiaoyu observed their interaction, her anger flaring as she suspected Tan Yueran of illicitly obtaining information about Cai Miao, the heart donor, through Fu Liang. Jiang Baiju swiftly intervened, preventing Jin Xiaoyu from confronting Tan Yueran directly.

Inside, Fu Liang confided in Tan Yueran, explaining that he remained in the city to heal from past emotional wounds, following a psychologist's advice to forget. He felt it was time to embark on a new life, to avoid living in the "illusory beauty" of his past memories. Tan Yueran was visibly pained by his words. Later, Jin Xiaoyu and Cheng Weilan went to Tan Yueran's school dorm, intending to clarify matters face-to-face.

They discovered that Tan Yueran, as a postgraduate, had moved out after her heart surgery and rarely stayed there. They spoke with Tan Yueran's dormmate, who remarked on Tan Yueran's dramatic change—becoming quiet, pale, and with bluish lips—making her appearance unsettling. The dormmate attributed these changes to her heart condition or something inexplicable by science, concluding that Tan Yueran seemed destined for trouble.

Episode 10 Recap

A new student has joined the Computer Science department, notable for her black, long hair, big, round eyes, and cute hat. When Tan Yueran walks by, smiling and wearing makeup, two female students find her behavior peculiar. They begin to suspect that this new, vibrant student is actually Tan Yueran. They recall that the former Tan Yueran was always somber but kind-hearted, whereas the current Tan Yueran is unsettlingly strange.

Aware of Tan Yueran's recent heart transplant, the students theorize that she is now being controlled by the heart's previous owner. This chilling idea sends shivers down Xiaoyu's and Weilan's spines, though Xiaoyu, known as "Little Yama," initially dismisses the ghost theory. Weilan decides to contact Chief Fan, Tan Yueran's treating doctor, for information. Meanwhile, Dao Ruifeng accompanies Qian Cheng for treatment at the hospital but dozes off in the patient room, prompting the doctor to angrily usher him out.

Outside, Dao Ruifeng encounters Weilan, who is there to meet Chief Fan regarding Tan Yueran's psychological state. Dao Ruifeng tries to introduce himself with an English name, "William," but Weilan playfully rebuffs him. Weilan mentions her worry about Xiaoyu, especially regarding a new man in her life, because Xiaoyu has been uncharacteristically silent about him. Weilan reveals her long-standing friendship with Xiaoyu, spanning twenty years, during which Xiaoyu transitioned from being her mother's patient to her own.

She sincerely hopes Xiaoyu lives long enough to grow old. Through surveillance footage, Jiang Baiju spots Tan Yueran, her unusual presence immediately signaling to him that something is amiss. He instructs his team to investigate her. Jiang Baiju and Qian Tu covertly enter Tan Yueran's home. Qian Tu expresses concern that their unauthorized entry is illegal, but Jiang Baiju, having obtained the address and key, assures him he’s merely there to observe.

Inside, they discover a novel titled "The Love Story of Ms. Luosifen and Mr. Coffee." The walls are covered with photographs of Fu Liang, many marked with red pen, creating an eerie atmosphere that makes Qian Tu feel like he's stepped into a serial killer movie. Elsewhere, Fu Liang visits Cai Miao’s grave, where he finds a fresh bouquet of flowers.

He reflects on their shared past and decides to bid Cai Miao a final farewell, intending to move on and start a new life in a different city. He tells Cai Miao that they never got a proper goodbye last time, and this time, he wants to do it right. Unbeknownst to him, someone silently appears behind him. Meanwhile, after their investigation, Jiang Baiju and Qian Tu realize that Tan Yueran poses a threat to Fu Liang.

They quickly gather Xiaoyu and others to locate him. Fu Liang is already bound in Tan Yueran's room. Tan Yueran reveals that her heart is Cai Miao's, stating, "Cai Miao is still alive. Cai Miao's heart still beats." She claims, "I am Cai Miao," asserting her new identity. Fu Liang, repulsed, plays along to gauge her state of mind.

He tells her he thought she was dead, which is why he planned to leave; now that he knows she's alive, he won't. He proclaims his love for Cai Miao's "soul, not her flesh." Tan Yueran, however, is consumed by her belief that he is abandoning her. She recounts how, despite her achievements, she always felt a sense of pity from others until she met Cai Miao, who helped her truly see and appreciate the world.

She cannot comprehend how Fu Liang could forsake "her" given their deep connection. As Tan Yueran produces a pair of scissors, intending to keep Fu Liang with her forever, Jiang Baiju, Xiaoyu, and Qian Tu burst in. The timely arrival of a delivery person at the door provides a momentary distraction, enabling the rescue. Fu Liang, despite the ordeal, doesn’t blame Tan Yueran.

He gently tells her that she is Tan Yueran, unique and irreplaceable, and that Cai Miao’s gift of a new heart was meant for her to live as herself, not to become Cai Miao. He vividly recalls Cai Miao's joy on the day he proposed and believes she would want them all to live full and happy lives. Fu Liang reaffirms his decision to leave the city and begin a new chapter.

Tan Yueran slowly starts to recover from her altered state, describing the experience as a long dream where a "minor role" was suddenly thrust into the "leading character's seat," leaving her disoriented by overwhelming joy. She also shares that a friend from an online forum recommended a "special medicine," which she now suspects was problematic and has given to Dr. Zhou for investigation. Xiaoyu asks for any clues, which Tan Yueran is willing to provide.

Meanwhile, Xue Wanwan repeatedly calls Dao Ruifeng, but he deliberately ignores her calls. He explains to Qian Cheng that he refers to her as "Xue Pan" (literally "Xue Plate," implying a big face and frail heart) because having known her since kindergarten, including her bedwetting habits, he lacks the "mystery" crucial for a romantic relationship.

When Weilan calls, Dao Ruifeng immediately answers and enthusiastically agrees to meet her for dinner at the hospital canteen, much to Qian Cheng’s amusement, who teases him about "courting" Jin Xiaoyu's friend. Dao Ruifeng claims he’s merely gathering "research" for a female doctor character in his novel.

Weilan expresses concern about Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju's burgeoning relationship, asking Dao Ruifeng to look after Xiaoyu's well-being and, if things go wrong, to "speak well of her" and "get her some compensation for the break-up." Dao Ruifeng, however, thinks they might just share a "brotherly love." Weilan simply wishes for Jiang Baiju to be good to Xiaoyu. Unaware of Weilan's worries, Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju are at home, happily making a cake. It's Xiaoyu's birthday, and despite Jiang Baiju’s centuries-long existence, he encourages her to make a wish. Without hesitation, Xiaoyu closes her eyes and wishes "to have a romantic relationship."

Episode 11 Recap

Jin Xiaoyu directly confessed her feelings to Jiang Baiju, who was initially taken aback. He questioned her, asking if she truly liked him. Jin Xiaoyu hesitated, and Jiang Baiju’s eyes flickered with a hint of disappointment. He then adopted a more senior tone, explaining that while young people might approach relationships casually, for him, at his age, love was a rare and precious fortune, not to be forced or experimented with.

Jin Xiaoyu honestly told him that though she might not be entirely certain of her feelings, she knew she needed him and had a strong liking for him. Jiang Baiju acknowledged that she was likely the only woman he could ever connect with, leaving him without other options or comparisons. Delighted by his admission that she was his "only one," Jin Xiaoyu impulsively pulled his face towards her and kissed him.

After a moment of surprise, Jiang Baiju reciprocated, deepening the kiss, and the sweetness of their shared dessert lingered. The next morning, Dao Ruifeng's cooking skills left Jiang Baiju visibly displeased. Fortunately, Jin Xiaoyu arrived, bringing him a carefully prepared, nutritious breakfast. Jiang Baiju still felt a touch of awkwardness after the previous night's events, but his heart was undeniably joyful.

Later, Jin Xiaoyu playfully joked that Jiang Baiju was like a persistent "thief" for her attention, then asked him if he would consider her, a "cute fair maiden," to which he simply found her amusing. Afterward, Jiang Baiju, talking face-to-face with Qian Cheng, asked him to arrange a meeting with Tan Yueran and have Qian Tu, Qian Cheng’s elder brother and the person who had once kicked his door, follow up on some clues with her.

Qian Cheng, aware of Jin Xiaoyu's terminal illness, teasingly asked if Jiang Baiju would support Jin Xiaoyu's master if the cure wasn't found, noting Jiang Baiju’s apparent change of heart regarding Jin Xiaoyu. Qian Cheng also informed Jiang Baiju that Jin Xiaoyu wouldn't be returning home that evening, reminding him that he was on duty, implying that Jiang Baiju still depended on her presence. Meanwhile, a peculiar situation unfolded at the funeral home.

A new employee, Cui, was on patrol in the cemetery with Uncle You. Cui, still new to the job, was terrified and clung to Uncle You, who jokingly told him to learn from the fearless "Little King of Hell," Jin Xiaoyu. Cui's fear intensified when he felt a sudden chill. Uncle You left him to patrol ahead, and Cui spotted a shadowy figure with a drooping head slowly drifting past. Petrified, Cui fainted.

News of the incident spread, with colleagues speculating it was a ghost, made worse by grainy security footage showing only a "white figure." Zhang Quanzhan and Quande, two senior colleagues, went to investigate that night. Quanzhan tried to appear brave, referring to them as the "Double-Quan team," but they too encountered the white figure. One fainted, and the other broke his leg while fleeing, confirming the eerie presence. Jin Xiaoyu visited her injured colleagues at the hospital.

An older woman advised her to stay away from "supernatural things." However, a resolute materialist, Jin Xiaoyu vowed to uncover the truth behind the "ghost." That night, she went to the cemetery, unexpectedly encountering Lin Nuoyan. He had brought snacks, claiming Cheng Weilan told him about the ghost hunt and he came to watch the "live show" and "mostly to see" Jin Xiaoyu.

Jin Xiaoyu, undeterred by the creepy setting, scoffed at the idea of ghosts, recounting a past case where she exposed a family's abuse by subtly altering a deceased elderly woman's appearance to reveal a "hatred livor mortis," emphasizing that such "hauntings" were always man-made. Suddenly, a strange sound of crying and rustling grass broke the silence. Jin Xiaoyu, fearless, dashed off in pursuit, leaving Lin Nuoyan momentarily bewildered before he followed.

Just then, Uncle You appeared and together, they managed to apprehend the "ghost," who turned out to be an elderly woman. The old woman explained she had snuck in through an unlocked back gate of the cemetery around 9 PM to visit her deceased husband. Lin Nuoyan, noticing the intravenous drip marks on her hand and slight hair loss, deduced she was a chemotherapy patient who had secretly left the hospital.

Lin Nuoyan and Jin Xiaoyu escorted the elderly woman, Mrs. Xu, back to the hospital, where the staff were in a frantic search for their VIP patient. As Mrs. Xu was being taken away, she looked back at Jin Xiaoyu and mused, "If a person cannot even decide whether they die or live, isn't life very meaningless?" Later, Mrs. Xu's daughter arrived, carrying expensive health products and daily necessities.

She scolded the nurses, blaming them for not taking adequate care of her mother, completely oblivious to her own failings. The next day, Lin Nuoyan found Jin Xiaoyu at the funeral home, where Chief Ge was tending to flowers. Lin Nuoyan offered to help, and Jin Xiaoyu playfully took over the watering can, teasing him that if he was so attentive, her master might try to "catch him as a son-in-law."

Lin Nuoyan, with a smile, joked about bringing his ID and household register the next day. Jin Xiaoyu revealed that she, not her master, was the one who planted the flowers, calling herself a "treasure girl" but jokingly adding that such perfect people "can't live long." Lin Nuoyan became serious, acknowledging that Mrs. Xu's words resonated with Jin Xiaoyu.

He shared his own experience of losing a respected mentor, which strengthened his belief that medicine, as a powerful force, could change the world. He earnestly encouraged Jin Xiaoyu not to give up, promising to find a cure for her. Touched by his sincerity, Jin Xiaoyu, in her unique way, promised him a "20% discount on the condolence money" if she ever gave up.

Later, Dao Ruifeng showed Jiang Baiju photos of Jin Xiaoyu and Lin Nuoyan together at the cemetery. He accused Jin Xiaoyu of having Lin Nuoyan as a "backup lover," trying to stir up jealousy. Jiang Baiju, clearly displeased, told Dao Ruifeng to stop talking, but Dao Ruifeng continued to joke about "sharing girlfriends."

Episode 12 Recap

The tension between Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju grew after Qian Cheng photographed Xiaoyu and Lin Nuoyan talking, leaving Jiang Baiju visibly displeased. That day, news arrived that the patient from Bed 13 had passed away. Xiaoyu rushed to the hospital, finding only a set of checkers, a gift from the "chess-playing Auntie" who had signed donor files the previous Wednesday and was said to have no family.

A nurse mentioned her surprise that the granny hadn't lived longer and also joked about the "three young men" from Xiaoyu's company needing an exorcist after their cemetery encounter. Overwhelmed with sorrow, Xiaoyu returned to the villa that night, hoping to confide in Jiang Baiju. Instead, he questioned her relationship with Lin Nuoyan. Jiang Baiju sarcastically suggested they play checkers to pass midnight, implying Xiaoyu wouldn't be charged extra.

Xiaoyu, hurt by his tone, asked if he was her boyfriend, questioning why he probed into her day as if he were, while refusing to define their relationship. He retorted, accusing her of sharing her professional hardships, exorcising spirits, and planting flowers with Professor Lin, treating him like a boyfriend, yet expecting him, Jiang Baiju, to be her actual boyfriend.

Xiaoyu vehemently denied any improper relationship with Lin Nuoyan, reiterating that she only wanted to be with Jiang Baiju, acting honorably and never two-timing. As she attempted to leave at eleven o'clock, he stopped her, but she misunderstood, concluding she was merely a "tool to accompany him through midnight." Jiang Baiju, in turn, challenged her, asking if he was simply "a puppet for love" to her.

Their argument escalated, with Xiaoyu accusing him of leading her on and playing hard to get, despite her sincere desire for a simple relationship. Jiang Baiju declared his love for her, denying he was manipulating her. He then asserted that Xiaoyu’s affections were insincere, driven by pity for his unique life rather than genuine love, and that she chose him knowing he wouldn't engage with or fall for anyone else.

Xiaoyu conceded that those reasons were partially true but insisted her feelings for him were real. Jiang Baiju reiterated his belief that love should be a unique, destined bond, not a casual experiment. Xiaoyu countered that he didn't understand her, just as she didn't fully understand him, questioning if he loved her out of genuine affection or necessity.

When he admitted he might have other options, Xiaoyu revealed her own prior uncertainty, stating that she now knew she loved him, but it wasn’t out of necessity. As midnight approached, Jiang Baiju, angered by her words, retreated into his hibernation chamber alone, ignoring her plea not to resort to "tricks." Outside, Qian Cheng and his associate, who had been listening in, discussed their manipulation of Jiang Baiju's insecurities.

Qian Cheng even switched allegiance to Xiaoyu, declaring her "more powerful" when she successfully calmed Jiang Baiju later. Distraught, Xiaoyu sought out Xu Nan at the hospital, pouring out her heart about the argument, describing Jiang Baiju as an "innocent grandpa" whom she had unknowingly hurt. Earlier, as Xu Nan’s care worker, Xiaoyu had listened to Xu Nan's philosophical reflections on life and death, and her casual inquiry about euthanasia, which Xiaoyu had dismissed with reassurances about recovery.

During her visit, she witnessed an argument in the lounge between Xu Nan’s daughter, He Jie, and Bella’s family over a spilled thermos containing medicinal soup. The adults' heated exchange highlighted their patients' serious conditions. After they left, a mature-looking Bella, a child actress, apologized to Xu Nan and introduced herself, forming an unlikely friendship with the elderly woman.

Later, He Jie, accompanied by her husband, brought her daughter to see an abandoned elderly patient, lecturing her daughter on filial piety and the importance of cherishing her own mother, presumably to make her more appreciative of Xu Nan’s care. Mrs. Dao invited Xiaoyu for afternoon tea, comforting her with the idea that genuine love can overcome any obstacle, and that differences in life's philosophy only reveal a lack of true love.

Xiaoyu admitted to feeling an insurmountable "wall" between her and Jiang Baiju, especially given his desire for death and her will to live. Mrs. Dao then revealed Jiang Baiju’s past struggles, explaining that he once contemplated building a steel plant as a means to commit suicide, believing even his self-healing powers couldn't survive the furnace. His past suicide attempts were numerous and varied.

However, Mrs. Dao’s father, an uneducated mountain dweller, had prevented him by tapping into Jiang Baiju's deepest longing: to live like a normal person, capable of crying, laughing, falling in love, getting sick, and going to doctors. Her father had conveyed a "spell" to Jiang Baiju: "As long as you are alive, you still have the chance to become an ordinary man." Mrs. Dao passed this "guardian" role and the powerful "spell" onto Xiaoyu.

Meanwhile, Jiang Baiju suffered chest pains, prompting his associate to deliver an update on the investigation into the mysterious radioactive substance. The substance had been found in samples from the bus case murderer and an epileptic patient at the funeral home, but its nature remained unknown. Qian Tu, in his own investigation, met with Tan Yueran, who disclosed that a doctor named Zhao Shan had provided her with a "special medicine."

Initially hesitant due to the cardiac rejection symptoms, she took one pill, finding it quickly addictive. She regularly visited Zhao Shan at the hospital for refills, where he insisted on detailed full-body examinations, claiming it was for patient responsibility.

Tan Yueran noted that her vivid dreams about donors began about a month after starting the medication, which sparked her interest in the donors, even leading her to see a play called "Amber" about a heart transplant recipient falling in love with her donor's boyfriend. Later, as Jiang Baiju was submerging himself in water, he experienced vivid flashbacks of "Xiuxiu," a girl from his past.

He recalled promising Xiuxiu that he would help her die if he lived, while Xiuxiu pleaded with him not to give up on living well until then, reminding him that her father believed he could become a normal person if he just lived. Xiaoyu’s voice broke through his painful memories, pulling him from the water. Deeply moved by Mrs. Dao’s words and his vulnerable state, Xiaoyu confessed her love for him, acknowledging her youthful misunderstanding of his deeper emotions.

She admitted her love might not be as profound as his but swore it was genuine, apologizing for her past insensitivity and for treating him as a "tool." She promised not to force him into anything, emphasizing his dignity and emotions. She expressed willingness to wait for his love, even for a lifetime, but pleaded for him not to lie to her, confessing she had already fallen deeply in love with him.

Jiang Baiju, visibly moved and no longer angry, admitted he was still "a little" mad but felt he had "forgiven her too early," his lips curling into a smile. He promised to live well for her sake, asking her to strive for a longer life in return. They embraced and shared a heartfelt kiss, sealing their reconciliation. At Qing'ai Group, preparations for the anniversary celebration were underway, following Dao Ruifeng’s instructions.

However, a major issue arose: they lacked a prominent female lead after Xue Wanwan threatened to expose Qin Rong’s data fraud, forcing Dao Ruifeng to send Qin Rong abroad to avoid scandal. This left Qing'ai without a strong female star for the event. Dao Ruifeng, despite his earlier anger and concern for Qin Rong, was soon confronted by Xue Wanwan at the airport, who accused him of seeing off his "love rival."

He tried to placate her, claiming he was sending Qin Rong away for her sake. Back at the office, Lin Nuoyan informed Xiaoyu that he was becoming Qing'ai's new endorser and would be featured in a fashion magazine, making him feel a little nervous. Qian Cheng later revealed to Jiang Baiju that Lin Nuoyan was coming to the company for a fitting, wearing clothes designed by Jiang Baiju.

Jiang Baiju, clearly displeased by the news, was advised by Qian Cheng to lock his door, hinting at the potential for further romantic complications. Dao Ruifeng, after a brief chat with Qian Cheng about the celebrity situation, left to attend to the fitting, hinting to a mysterious "Madam" on a phone call that a surprise was being orchestrated, ensuring Jiang Baiju wouldn't have a chance to "run away" from the impending encounter with Lin Nuoyan. Dao Ruifeng then met Lin Nuoyan and his own assistant, Bai, briefly before excusing himself, leaving Bai to manage the fitting.

Episode 13 Recap

Jin Xiaoyu arrives at Jiang Baiju's office, but finds no one. She calls Dao Ruifeng, who speaks cryptically, mentioning he's "on the run" and that Jiang Baiju is at the company with a "love rival," trying on clothes. Xiaoyu deduces Jiang Baiju is in the photo studio on the 18th floor. There, Lin Nuoyan is trying on an unusual "free-range chicken" themed outfit.

As Lin Nuoyan trips and falls into Jiang Baiju's arms, Jin Xiaoyu appears, witnessing the awkward scene, prompting Jiang Baiju to immediately push Lin Nuoyan away. Lin Nuoyan learns Xiaoyu is a close friend of Jiang Baiju's and observes that she seems to be Jiang Baiju's type, a point Jiang Baiju readily agrees with. Lin Nuoyan then reveals Xiaoyu has a boyfriend who works at the company, but Jiang Baiju dismisses it, stating it doesn't stop him from liking her.

Money Cheng enters, remarking on the dramatic scene and openly questioning Jiang Baiju's romantic preferences. Jin Xiaoyu retorts that Jiang Baiju "likes the entire human species" and mocks his physical condition. Frustrated, Jin Xiaoyu cuts off the conversation and quickly leaves. Meanwhile, child star Bella converses with Xu Nan, a former school administrator.

Bella, a seasoned actress despite her young age, feels she will be alone after death as her family is complicated, while Xu Nan has her late husband waiting for her and offers to have him look out for Bella in the afterlife. Bella shows Xu Nan a picture of her "boyfriend," Lin Nuoyan, a professor and spokesperson for organ donation.

Inspired by his work, Bella plans to donate all her organs, particularly her corneas and heart, as a positive example for her fans and other young people. She then suggests Xu Nan donate her body to medical science, acknowledging her age makes organ donation impractical. Bella immediately calls Cheng Weilan, a volunteer, to provide Xu Nan with information on body donation. Cheng Weilan later tells Xiaoyu about Bella's efforts and her leukemia.

Xiaoyu and Cheng Weilan discuss how both Bella and Xu Nan might feel burdened by their families' expectations. Xiaoyu, recalling her own experiences, tells Cheng Weilan that she finds Cheng Weilan and Liu Meina noisy when they fuss over her during her illness, though she knows it comes from love. Cheng Weilan, musing on their friendship, asks if she ranks second to Xiaoyu's master, and Xiaoyu confirms it.

Later, Jiang Baiju is upset, still misinterpreting Xiaoyu's earlier comments as a sign she has a new boyfriend, possibly Lin Nuoyan, and even connects it to a "turkey outfit" she once dressed him in. Xiaoyu, exasperated, talks about her dissatisfaction with her life.

Jiang Baiju then discusses Qing'ai's upcoming anniversary celebration, explaining that Dao Ruifeng had focused on popular artists but neglected seasoned actors, and the unexpected departure of Qin Rong, a high-quality artist, left them without a strong female lead. Xiaoyu reminds Jiang Baiju of her offer to give him a traditional Chinese massage if she helped resolve the Tan Yueran issue. Xiaoyu begins the massage, insisting on covering Jiang Baiju's head with a white cloth and lighting three incense sticks.

She instructs him not to speak while she massages him. During the session, Xiaoyu recounts the story of Xia Qi, the "checkers lady" from Bed 13, who was a famous geologist. Xia Qi lived a full, unmarried life, traveled extensively, wrote many books, and peacefully passed away after leaving gifts for her friends.

Xiaoyu contrasts this with Xu Nan, whose loving children, after her husband's death and her subsequent illness, overwork to afford her VIP medical treatment, unaware that this overwhelming love has become a heavy burden to Xu Nan. Xiaoyu muses on the human condition, where people have no control over their lives or deaths, constantly tied by ethics, morals, beliefs, and emotions, and questions how one faces life when it offers only pain and torment.

Her voice soothes Jiang Baiju, who drifts into a dream of 1935 Shanghai. In his dream, he recalls his last moment seeing Chen Mansha perform before leaving for the war, promising to return. He then sees Chen Mansha's funeral and bumps into Xiaoyu. Waking from his dream, Jiang Baiju discovers that the massage techniques Xiaoyu used on him were, in fact, those for preparing a deceased person for burial. Xiaoyu, flustered, quickly denies it and makes a hasty exit.

Dao Ruifeng then remarks that Jiang Baiju's romantic life is "even more dramatic than my novel." At Qing'ai, Money Cheng struggles to negotiate with Peng Na, an artist demanding an exclusive cover for the anniversary brochure. Wanwan then approaches Money Cheng, determined to find out who Dao Ruifeng's dance partner will be. She threatens Money Cheng with exposing his past actions if he doesn't comply.

Money Cheng, seeking a favor in return, agrees to reveal the partner's identity if Wanwan helps secure Yang Xue'er as Qing'ai's new spokesperson, a difficult task as Yang Xue'er rarely takes commercial endorsements. Wanwan agrees, leveraging her mother's connections, and Money Cheng falsely tells her that Jin Xiaoyu is Dao Ruifeng's dance partner. Wanwan sends her assistant to locate Xiaoyu at the hospital. At the hospital, Jin Xiaoyu is present as Dao Ruifeng, wearing a mask, approaches Cheng Weilan.

He reassures Cheng Weilan about the biting patient incident and then flirts with her, asking her to be his dance partner for the anniversary, only requiring her presence as he needs no dancing skills. Cheng Weilan declines his invitation and leaves. Meanwhile, Wanwan's assistant reports that the doctor at the hospital is Cheng Weilan, Jin Xiaoyu's best friend, causing Wanwan to realize Money Cheng's information was a misdirection.

Back at Qing'ai, Jiang Baiju confronts Dao Ruifeng about the car accident that occurred while Gao Guofu's body was being transported for examination. Dao Ruifeng advises Jiang Baiju to focus on his own treatment, to which Jiang Baiju replies that his illness is stable "at the worst" and he has never truly been well.

Jiang Baiju then tells Dao Ruifeng he has a meeting with Yang Xue'er's agent and won't be home for dinner, playfully telling Dao Ruifeng he'll have to cook for himself. Later, Jin Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju discuss the recent hospital incident where a deceased patient bit a nurse. Cheng Weilan had informed Xiaoyu that the patient's body exhibited the same cyanosis as Gao Guofu but lacked rigor mortis and livor mortis.

Jiang Baiju shares a recording from Qian Tu of Tan Yueran's conversation, revealing she obtained the specific drug from an illegal online clinic run by a Dr. Zhao Shan, who meticulously documented her physical indicators during follow-ups. Xiaoyu notes a disturbing progression: Gao Guofu had livor mortis, a previous epilepsy patient had some, but this latest body had none, yet still showed muscle activity after death.

They conclude that the specific drug has been upgraded, and that Zhao Shan is using the drug-takers as "guinea pigs" to refine the drug, thus constantly seeking new subjects for their experiments. Outside the hospital, Xu Nan's daughter expresses her distress over her mother's pancreatic cancer and the heavy financial burden. She confides in another woman, whose husband also has cancer, about her desperate hope to save her mother.

The woman then reveals she bought a "foreign medicine" or "nutritional supplement" online, not available in hospitals, which has reportedly helped her husband. She implies it's not expensive but must be kept secret, and encourages Xu Nan's daughter to "take a gamble." Persuaded, Xu Nan's daughter buys the medicine and later gives it to her mother, instructing her to take one pill daily.

Episode 14 Recap

Yang Xue'er arrived at Qing'ai Group for a fitting, where Dao Ruifeng, the third-generation designer, greeted her. His assistant, William, paced anxiously, drawing a comment from Dao Ruifeng. William retorted, "I'm rubbing my hands because you look like a black-eyed chicken." He added that Xue'er was "here to try on the clothes, not to meet me."

A conversation between Dao Ruifeng and another person hinted at William being in a "sour mood" and the need for Mrs. Dao to find another celebrity in France if Yang Xue'er hadn't come. Yang Xue'er and her manager arrived. Her manager, citing a tight schedule, urged them to proceed directly to the clothes. Yang Xue'er noted that Dao Ruifeng didn't look like he slept well.

He responded, "After I heard that you'd come today, I got too excited to sleep last night. Hope you don't mind." She countered, "I didn't put on any makeup because I wanted you to see my natural look. Hope you don't mind, either." After exchanging formal introductions, they moved to view the designs. Yang Xue'er found the new collection "messy, but very pretty." She inquired about the series' name.

Dao Ruifeng explained, "It's called 'The Nine Stages of a Decaying Corpse.' " He elaborated that the concept originated in China and was later developed in Japan, referring to nine stages of post-mortem decay, listing them as "distension, rupture, exudation of blood, discoloration and desiccation, consumption by animals, putrefaction, bones, dismemberment, and parched to dust." Yang Xue'er found it "strange" and questioned why, with so many themes available, "death" was chosen.

Jiang Baiju, acting as Dao Ruifeng's assistant "Bai," then stepped in. He explained that "The Nine Stages" is typically found in temples, usually depicting a female cadaver, to illustrate that physical beauty is a mere illusion and that all carnal desires ultimately lead to an unsightly decay. He clarified that "a beauty will eventually grow old and die" and undergo these stages. He then posed a question to Yang Xue'er: "Do you think death can take love away?"

He continued, "Love will never last. But memories will remain. We never forget those happy moments we experienced." He emphasized that "the flesh will decay, but love will last forever." He suggested that the designs, "messy but beautiful," might represent confronting "the tough love you've had." He added that betrayal, jealousy, and hurting each other are "even worse than death," including "the fear of death" and "the reluctance to accept death," which the designer hoped she would feel.

He urged her to "see through the ugliness hidden beneath the beautiful facade," yet "still choose to believe in beauty." Yang Xue'er, intrigued, asked, "Who are you?" Jiang Baiju replied he was "Wei Ruifeng's assistant," to which Dao Ruifeng added, "This is Bai, my assistant. He's become Crayon Shin-chan." At her late husband's grave, Xiaoyu found Mrs. Xu, who happily reported her recent blood test results were "pretty good," allowing her to visit the grave.

Despite her improved appearance, Mrs. Xu speculated it could be "terminal lucidity." She shared her decision to donate her organs and body for medical teaching, hoping to be a "Silent Mentor" for students, as she'd never done anything significant in life. She also brought up euthanasia, pondering that while people say one should "live well," who dictates that one "can't die well"? Xiaoyu agreed.

At the hospital, a nurse discussed strategies for avoiding blind dates, while news spread that Mrs. Xu, a liver cancer patient in VIP ward No. 3, had made a miraculous recovery, with all her indicators normal, thrilling Chief Sun. Weilan, however, remained suspicious about this "medical miracle." Qian Tu consulted Professor Chen regarding the specific drug. Professor Chen admitted that even his internationally renowned senior expert had never encountered the radioactive substance found in the drug.

He did confirm that the substance affects dopamine secretion, leading to dopamine dysregulation syndrome, which is linked to Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and Tourette's, "especially schizophrenia." He concluded that this was likely related to Tan Yueran's sudden emotional breakdown and that "schizophrenia is the sequela of taking this pill," warning of dire consequences if she hadn't been found.

Jiang Baiju then revealed he was searching for a radioactive meteorite, drawing a parallel to the Chernobyl disaster, where radiation caused animals to mutate to abnormal sizes, like a mouse growing "to the size of a horse." He recounted how his search for such materials led him to a 20-year-old illegal medical treatment case, where confiscated radioactive medical instruments were illicitly sold. He traced the case to Zhao Shan's hospital and his partner, Gao Guofu, a car repairman.

The pursuit of Gao Guofu ended with the "bus incident," where Gao Guofu, showing "no fear of death," died, cutting off the lead. Jiang Baiju confided that he needed the meteorite to "return to normal." Later, Jiang Baiju found Xiaoyu reading "Forensic Entomology" and asked if she wanted to be a forensic pathologist. She explained she sometimes used insects in her encoffining work and was reading the book gifted by Detective Xu.

She explained, "If I killed you and placed you in a plastic bag, flies wouldn't be easily attracted to you." Jiang Baiju called this "the most romantic words I've heard for dozens of years." Around 11 p. m. , Jiang Baiju asked Xiaoyu if she could dance. She joked about square dancing, but he began teaching her, guiding her movements closely. She accused him of flirting, to which he playfully retorted that she was the one being flirty.

A song playing prompted Xiaoyu to ask about the singer, whom Jiang Baiju identified as a "top singer back in my time." He reminisced about his youth, confessing that he and "old Chen" both admired alluring women, and that he had once vowed to marry Chen Mansha, only to attend her funeral instead of her wedding, a reminder that "one should never make a resolution he can't fulfill."

He concluded, "But in the end, I fell in love with someone else." Xiaoyu teased him about his preferences, asking if he would have liked her if she were alluring, implying she'd need plastic surgery. She declared herself a "natural beauty," and they continued dancing, increasingly close. Xiaoyu admitted he had "changed my mind about living alone forever." Jiang Baiju joked about her "short life expectancy" and that he hadn't agreed to be her boyfriend yet.

She accused him of "ulterior motives" in teaching her to dance, given her poor balance. He dared her to stand up, threatening to "practice 'decomposition caused by sarcosaprophagous insects'" on her if she didn't. She found his technical jargon "impressive." Elsewhere, Qian Cheng expressed frustration with William, who was pacing and playing music. William explained that Jiang Baiju plays music when he's happy or sad, but "rarely did Young Master feel happy before. He's been in a good mood recently.

Listen. He's laughing." Qian Cheng mockingly declared he would "end our friendship." Yang Xue'er then requested that Dao Ruifeng's assistant be arranged to have dinner with her, prompting William to exclaim, "The show is about to reach the dramatic part." Mrs. Xu was discharged, exchanging heartfelt goodbyes with her daughter, He Meiman, and promising to share her meal plan. Weilan called Xiaoyu, expressing renewed suspicion about Mrs. Xu's recovery, connecting it to the specific drug.

Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju agreed they had "hit the jackpot," confirming the drug was being used. That night, a neighbor complained about Mr. Wang's dog incessantly barking, which annoyed He Meiman. Soon after, the dog fell silent, and blood was later seen near its cage. Mrs. Xu, her hair now white, seemingly like a ghost, entered He Meiman's room, wielding a knife. Shouting "Kill the manizer! Kill the bad guy!" she attacked her daughter.

He Meiman, terrified, screamed that she was her daughter, "Meiman." Fortunately, Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu arrived just in time to intervene and prevent her from harming He Meiman. He Meiman later explained that in her desperation, after her father's passing, she had bought the illegal drug from a woman she met at the hospital's billing counter, who claimed her husband with pancreatic cancer was sustained by it and that it was brought from Thailand.

Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju talked with He Meiman, acknowledging the immense weight of caring for a seriously ill parent. They discussed how, despite the love, children must eventually grow up, and women, in particular, rarely live for themselves, their names often only truly remembered at their funerals, being referred to by relational titles like "grandma, aunt, sister-in-law" otherwise. Xiaoyu reiterated Mrs. Xu's sentiment that it's a profound sorrow to lack autonomy in both life and death.

Back at Qing'ai, a colleague suggested short dresses for Yang Xue'er. Yang Xue'er's manager noted her strong interest in "Mr. Dao Ruifeng's assistant," Jiang Baiju, and that she had personally arranged dinner, indicating its importance. He expressed concern that this attention might "cause any inconvenience to Bai" as he was "just an assistant" and Dao Ruifeng was the designer.

He admitted telling Yang Xue'er that promoting an assistant could "embarrass the designer" and make the assistant's life difficult, but she still texted him. Dao Ruifeng, referring to Yang Xue'er as a "stubborn child," then offered Xiaoyu a dress from his "Jade Pond" collection, described as "more feminine" and "suitable for elegant ladies," but Xiaoyu found it "too much." Jiang Baiju informed Dao Ruifeng of the dinner reservation at "Louvre," a restaurant with a strict dress code.

Dao Ruifeng expressed concern about the "3,000 Yuan per person" cost and offered to accompany Jiang Baiju with William for "safety." Jiang Baiju declined, saying he wouldn't bother Xiaoyu during work hours. Later, Xiaoyu discovered the invitation. Qian Cheng, intentionally provoking her, informed her that Jiang Baiju, "Young Master," would be dining with Yang Xue'er at 6 p. m. at a high-end restaurant.

He praised Jiang Baiju's "irresistible charm" and suggested Xiaoyu "go confront him right now and ask for an explanation." Xiaoyu, pretending indifference, said she wouldn't fall for his trick. However, once alone, she couldn't resist calling the restaurant, "Louvre," to inquire about the reservation, only to be told it was a members-only establishment and she couldn't book a table.

Frustrated, Xiaoyu, thinking about Jiang Baiju's excitement and Yang Xue'er's apparent crush, decided to invite Lin Nuoyan to the same restaurant to surprise Jiang Baiju. Lin Nuoyan arrived to pick up Xiaoyu, who was wearing the dress from the "Jade Pond" collection (which was actually a nightgown) and Lin Nuoyan's jacket. He complimented her, saying she looked like a "movie star." Xiaoyu replied, "As a matter of fact, do you know what's the best dressing tip? Be confident.

You only dress up for the others to see. As long as you don't feel awkward, who cares how the others feel?" At the restaurant, Lin Nuoyan noted that due to their "last-minute reservation," they were seated in the dining room, while private rooms required a week's advance booking. He mentioned the restaurant offered fixed dinner menus and he chose "the most bang for your buck meal." They playfully argued about who would pay.

Lin Nuoyan pointed out a "VVVIP" door, explaining it was "specially designed for the VVVIP," with a special parking lot and garden entrance. Just then, Jiang Baiju, Yang Xue'er, and Qian Cheng entered through that very door. Yang Xue'er, seeing the others, immediately insisted that "Assistant Bai" (Jiang Baiju) sit next to her, stating, "I'm just here to tag along. The artists are more important." Yang Xue'er continued to press Jiang Baiju for his full name.

He again deflected, emphasizing his role as "Mr. Dao Ruifeng's assistant." Qian Cheng interjected, revealing that Jiang Baiju was "actually trained by my grandmother" and was "Mrs. Dao's apprentice." Yang Xue'er, impressed, then asked to "have the honor to have you design a dress for me." Jiang Baiju declined, reiterating he was "just a smooth-talking assistant." Yang Xue'er insisted it was her "intuition" about his talent.

Dao Ruifeng confirmed Bai was talented but "not ready yet for the real challenge," as Mrs. Dao "hoped that he could hone his skills and become a true artist instead of a commercial designer." Jiang Baiju concurred, inviting Yang Xue'er to model for him when he made his debut, and she agreed to see his "secret designs." They all toasted.

Episode 15 Recap

Before a scheduled gathering, Qian Cheng met Lin Nuoyan, who was at the company to discuss the anniversary celebration with President Zhang. Qian Cheng inquired if Lin Nuoyan had a girlfriend, to which Lin Nuoyan replied he had a crush who already had a boyfriend, reportedly an employee of Qian Cheng's company. Qian Cheng jokingly offered to fire the boyfriend.

Qian Cheng then gave Lin Nuoyan a VIP card to a restaurant, claiming it was a gift sponsored by his elder brother, Mr. Da Qian, to thank him. Qian Cheng requested two favors from Lin Nuoyan: to post about the restaurant on his Moments and to not reveal that Qian Cheng was the one who gave him the invitation. Lin Nuoyan readily agreed, promising to post it that evening.

As anticipated by Qian Cheng, Xiaoyu arrived at the restaurant with Lin Nuoyan. Qian Cheng observed Xiaoyu nervously looking into the dining area. Inside, two waiters were openly admiring Yang Xue'er's beauty and her companion, an unfamiliar man they assumed was her boyfriend. They speculated he must be important, given that two Qing'ai Group bosses were with him, and commented on the high good looks of wealthy individuals.

Witnessing Yang Xue'er's intimate demeanor with Jiang Baiju, and overhearing the waiters' remarks, further deepened Xiaoyu's distress. Xiaoyu confessed to Lin Nuoyan that she felt she shouldn't have come, believing it was self-inflicted humiliation. She expressed her profound sadness, reflecting on her impending death and the feeling that she was no longer unique to Jiang Baiju.

She lamented that she was neither the one with whom he had promised "life and death" nor the one destined to spend a long life with him, noting that he hadn't even told her about such things. Despite her understanding, she was still hurt. Lin Nuoyan gently placed a hand on her shoulder, reiterating his promise to try his best to cure her, to which Xiaoyu replied, "I trust you."

Qian Cheng's impatient voice suddenly cut through, telling Xiaoyu and Lin Nuoyan that they were blocking the path. Jiang Baiju, accompanied by Dao Ruifeng and an assistant named William, was visible. Lin Nuoyan's demeanor changed upon seeing Jiang Baiju, and the atmosphere grew tense. Xiaoyu attempted to explain the situation to Jiang Baiju, but he remained cold-faced, stating it was chilly outside and he had company matters to attend to, and that they could discuss it at home, before leaving.

After the encounter, Lin Nuoyan thanked Qian Cheng for the VIP card. Qian Cheng brought up Jiang Baiju, confirming that he was indeed Xiaoyu's boyfriend, a fact Lin Nuoyan had already suspected after seeing them together previously. Lin Nuoyan admitted that despite knowing Xiaoyu had a boyfriend, he still found her likable and comfortable to be around, and that over time, one would inevitably fall for her.

Qian Cheng, expressing his dislike for troublemakers, suggested that since Xiaoyu didn't have long to live, Lin Nuoyan should take over caring for her. Lin Nuoyan stated he didn't agree with most of Qian Cheng's reasoning but affirmed his genuine desire to care for Xiaoyu for the rest of her life, however brief, confident he could do so. He stressed, however, that it must be Xiaoyu's willing choice.

He then issued a stern warning to Qian Cheng: "Jin Xiaoyu is the girl I like. Don't bully her." On the way back, Yang Xue'er pressed Dao Ruifeng about Jiang Baiju, asking if he was truly Dao Ruifeng's assistant and if the girl she saw at the door was his ex-girlfriend. Dao Ruifeng, after confirming that Xiaoyu would likely become an ex after that evening, cautioned Yang Xue'er about the consequences of associating with the wrong people.

Yang Xue'er challenged Dao Ruifeng's assumption that Jiang Baiju liked girls, attributing it to Qian Cheng's influence. Dao Ruifeng then issued a more serious warning, stating that Jiang Baiju was far more dangerous than she perceived and that he did not belong to their world, similar to other artists but uniquely so. He advised her not to waste her time on him or create unnecessary problems. Yang Xue'er teased Dao Ruifeng, calling him a "charming playboy."

Dao Ruifeng then invited her to be his dance partner for the anniversary celebration. Yang Xue'er declined, citing the potential trouble with Mrs. Xue and the widely known relationship between Dao Ruifeng and Xue Wanwan, whom she identified as his "Achilles' heel." Dao Ruifeng remarked that Yang Xue'er was "deeply hidden."

Returning home, Xiaoyu attempted to clarify the situation, explaining that Qian Cheng had orchestrated the restaurant encounter, and she had only gone there with Lin Nuoyan, using his VIP card, because she believed Jiang Baiju was dining alone with Yang Xue'er. Jiang Baiju, however, focused on her wearing a stylish dress and Lin Nuoyan's jacket at such an expensive restaurant, declaring it a "date," despite Xiaoyu's protests.

He accused her of deliberately falling into Qian Cheng's trap and then involving another man to provoke his jealousy. Xiaoyu countered that she was merely following him for work, as handling the artist invitation issues was too complex for the inexperienced William and other young staff. Jiang Baiju surprisingly expressed happiness at experiencing the "normal man's problem" of a jealous girlfriend.

Xiaoyu then admitted her jealousy, not of Yang Xue'er's beauty or wealth, but of her longer lifespan, wishing she could spend more time with him. Jiang Baiju urged her not to dwell on her short life, reminding her he had known this from the start and had lived alone for a century. Xiaoyu grimly predicted he would kill himself after her death, also bringing up an unrevealed agreement he had with Mrs. Dao.

The argument escalated, culminating in Xiaoyu declaring, "Jiang Baiju, let's break up." The following morning, Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju found themselves in a deadlock at the doorway, neither willing to concede. At Qing'ai Group, Jiang Baiju was too consumed by his emotions to focus on work, instead taking his frustration out on some fabric. Dao Ruifeng observed Qian Cheng, who was resting on a couch, and mentioned Jiang Baiju hadn't resorted to self-harm this time.

Qian Cheng admitted he couldn't resist meddling in Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu's relationship, also to find material for his novel. Dao Ruifeng explained that their argument, though initiated by Qian Cheng's actions, was not fundamentally "about" Qian Cheng; rather, "all saboteurs dig from the original cracks." He concluded that this dispute might actually be beneficial, forcing Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu to confront the true underlying issues in their relationship.

Qian Tu confronted Qian Cheng about his sudden return home, to which Qian Cheng replied he was simply visiting family and that Jiang Baiju was heartbroken. Qian Tu, angered yet somewhat amused by Qian Cheng's deliberate sabotage of Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu's relationship, playfully threatened to beat his younger brother if he wasn't related. He highlighted Xiaoyu's terminal illness and short life expectancy, emphasizing that she had finally found happiness with a boyfriend, only for Qian Cheng to ruin it.

Qian Cheng retorted that Xiaoyu should not be in Jiang Baiju's world, deeming her "destructive" despite her brief remaining life, and pointing out that Lin Nuoyan, a "fine man," also liked her and would be a better match. Qian Tu, surprised that Qian Cheng, who usually looked down on Jiang Baiju, was now meddling in his romantic life, reminded his brother that arguments, while sometimes leading to breakups, could also deepen a couple's bond.

Qian Cheng, however, firmly believed that Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu's relationship was beyond repair, describing them as "water and fire." Later, as Xiaoyu diligently worked on an embalming practice, Lin Nuoyan visited. She shared her master's teachings, explaining that her profession was "the greatest deed" and that by imagining the deceased person standing before her, she ensured her actions were always for their good, thus maintaining a clear conscience.

She revealed that, contrary to being an atheist, she firmly believed in an afterlife and the existence of souls. Intrigued, Lin Nuoyan invited her to hot pot. During their meal, a melancholic Xiaoyu confided in Lin Nuoyan about her recent argument with her boyfriend. Lin Nuoyan then preemptively confessed, "I like you, Xiaoyu."

He admitted that while he hoped her arguments with Jiang Baiju might lead her to leave him and be with him, his deeper wish was for her genuine happiness, even if it meant she wasn't with him. He reflected on his past self-pride and how seeing her sadness shifted his perspective, making him understand the essence of love. He lightened the mood by joking that his heartfelt confession was partly thanks to his English literature degree.

He articulated his belief in straightforwardness in love and fair competition as long as no one was married. He offered to end their friendship if his feelings caused her distress, an offer Xiaoyu playfully but firmly rejected, especially while enjoying hot pot. They then agreed to maintain boundaries and focus their future conversations on professional matters. Still unable to shake his concern for Xiaoyu, Jiang Baiju followed her to the restaurant.

As he watched her congenial interaction with Lin Nuoyan from a distance, a sharp pain shot through his chest. His initial anger and frustration gradually gave way to a profound realization. He confided in Xiao Cheng that he and Xiaoyu were not ordinary people, and their relationship was inherently difficult.

He observed that Lin Nuoyan and Xiaoyu seemed to understand each other perfectly, with no generational gap, and noted Lin Nuoyan's admiration for Xiaoyu's appearance, character, work, and even her volunteer spirit. Despite Xiao Cheng's insistence that Xiaoyu loved Jiang Baiju, Jiang Baiju, drawing on his centuries of observing human relationships, concluded that Xiaoyu, being young, merely had a "liking" for him, typical of how young people are drawn to what is "different"—but he believed this was not true love. He seemed to grasp that Lin Nuoyan could potentially offer Xiaoyu a happiness and normalcy he couldn't.

Episode 16 Recap

Xiaoyu's master noticed her subdued behavior and correctly guessed she was dealing with a breakup, even though Xiaoyu kept her feelings hidden. He cautioned Zhang Quande, who was planning his wedding, not to mention it around Xiaoyu, as she was recently heartbroken and the news would only upset her further. The master understood that Xiaoyu was no ordinary child; she kept her emotions to herself and always considered others, yet she was also clear about her own actions.

He sighed, wondering if he would ever live to see Xiaoyu's wedding. Qian Cheng brought Xiaoyu a durian cake, which made her joke that he was trying to poison her. He then seriously advised her to stop quarreling with Jiang Baiju. Xiaoyu explained that she had always believed Jiang Baiju’s life wish was to die, but she felt it was an impossible task because he was so difficult to kill.

She later learned he had a specific plan: to jump into a steel furnace, have himself beheaded, and his heart removed. Before meeting Xiaoyu, Jiang Baiju had made an agreement with Mrs. Dao to end his own life after her death. However, Mrs. Dao had asked Xiaoyu to convince Jiang Baiju that he could become an ordinary person. Xiaoyu, however, believed he would still follow his original plan to destroy himself after her death.

Qian Cheng remarked that Xiaoyu was like a temporary painkiller for Jiang Baiju, offering short-term relief but with harmful long-term effects. Xiaoyu reflected on her love for Jiang Baiju, acknowledging his long past that she couldn't be a part of, and a future she felt unqualified to give him. She realized he had a soulmate destined for death with him, and other beautiful women who could wait for him, while she was merely an unnecessary painkiller.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke. Later, Xiaoyu received a wedding invitation from Zhang Quande and brought it to her master. The master reminisced about the only time he attended a wedding outside their profession, that of Chief Cheng's parents. He mentioned the societal belief that their profession brings bad luck, wondering if it was why Chief Cheng's parents only had Cheng Weilan ten years after their wedding. Xiaoyu reassured him not to be so superstitious.

The master then earnestly expressed his deepest wish: to receive a wedding invitation from her. He then offered her some advice on love, reminding her to cherish those who are sincere and devoted to her, especially considering her own health challenges compared to her partner. He emphasized that her boyfriend, despite her short life expectancy, chose her without hesitation, a decision that required immense courage.

Feeling unwell and experiencing a nosebleed, Xiaoyu lamented her short life, questioning why she had to endure such things while others lived long or were even immortal. Weilan found her and lightheartedly accused her of being constipated due to sentimentality, but Xiaoyu expressed her deep emotional pain, admitting she once secretly forgave God for her strange disease after meeting Jiang Baiju, believing it was meant for him. Weilan then invited her to join the Qing'ai anniversary celebration.

The Qing'ai anniversary celebration began, where CEO Qian Cheng and designer William Dao were greeted warmly. William spoke about his design philosophy, and Qian Cheng confirmed a collaboration with actress Yang Xue'er, who was also present. During the event, Mrs. Dao met Jiang Baiju, and he expressed confidence in winning Xiaoyu back. However, upon seeing Lin Nuoyan, Jiang Baiju still felt a surge of anger and self-doubt.

William's assistant also confided in him about his "old father mentality," admitting he dislikes Xiaoyu but acknowledges Young Master's affection for her. He assured William that what happened at the media-free, no-photo event would remain a secret from Xiaoyu. Xiaoyu and Weilan arrived at the celebration backstage, hoping to avoid crowds. They stumbled upon Mrs. Dao, who was in a clothing warehouse retrieving items for a museum exhibition.

Mrs. Dao, who owned "the whole Qing'ai," playfully chastised them for "sneaking in" instead of openly attending. Weilan explained they were there to find a "man" or "ex-boyfriend." Noticing their unkempt state, Mrs. Dao took them to a dressing room and arranged for her personal team of stylists, makeup artists, and hairdressers to prepare them for the banquet within the hour. Meanwhile, Jiang Baiju was at the event. Yang Xue'er formally introduced herself to Jiang Baiju, and they danced together.

Lin Nuoyan, introduced as Professor Lin, head of the Organ Donor Association and spokesperson for the Tissue Regeneration Laboratory, briefly interacted with William's assistant. Following Lin Nuoyan's indication, Xiaoyu spotted Jiang Baiju dancing with Yang Xue'er. Seeing them, Xiaoyu sadly thought about how wonderful it would be if he could continue to live so carefree after her death.

Lin Nuoyan, sensing her melancholy, invited Xiaoyu to dance with him, suggesting they could even do a square dance if they couldn't perform ballroom steps. Dao Ruifeng observed the escalating tension, describing the scene as a "bloody battleground." As Jiang Baiju performed a dance move that reminded him of practicing with Xiaoyu, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest and collapsed. Xiaoyu immediately rushed to his side. He took her hand, and they left the celebration together.

They talked candidly, clearing up their misunderstandings. Xiaoyu expressed her deep hurt, likening her heart to fragile glutinous rice paper, easily broken. She reiterated her belief that her "strange disease" was meant for the one she loved. Jiang Baiju, in turn, explained that his recent actions with Yang Xue'er were orchestrated by William because William couldn't handle things himself.

He apologized for not having told her about his agreement with Mrs. Dao regarding his death, or about his interactions with Yang Xue'er. Understanding each other’s true feelings, Jiang Baiju gently cupped Xiaoyu's face and kissed her.

Episode 17 Recap

Jiang Baiju confessed to Jin Xiaoyu that he had not made a life-or-death pact with Dao Xiuxiu. Instead, he had simply hoped she could dispose of him, but that was before Jin Xiaoyu entered his life. With her presence, his previous plans no longer held any meaning. He clarified that he also had no arrangement with Yang Xue'er, asserting that it was a ploy orchestrated by Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng.

He then reassured Jin Xiaoyu that nothing couldn't be solved by a kiss, and if that didn't work, perhaps some barbecue would. Jin Xiaoyu, however, expressed her sorrow, feeling like a useless "painkiller" and an "abnormal person" trying to have a normal relationship. She lamented about Jiang Baiju's long past without her, and a potentially short future with him, and his "soul mate" who could die with him, and beautiful ladies waiting for him.

Jiang Baiju admitted that he had indeed lived a very long time without her company and that their future together might also be brief, but this did not mean they couldn't give to each other. He affirmed that while Dao Xiuxiu was like family whom he had accompanied almost her entire life, any admiration from other women was purely professional.

He emphasized that Jin Xiaoyu was not a painkiller that shouldn't have appeared, but rather the brightest memory of his life. Observing Jin Xiaoyu being led away by Jiang Baiju, Lin Nuoyan remained unfazed, much to Qian Cheng's confusion. Lin Nuoyan explained his philosophy on romance, stating that love should be spontaneous.

He believed that efforts in a relationship should always be based on mutual interaction; two people who like each other and work towards their relationship together are moving forward hand-in-hand. However, if one person's heart already belongs to another, and the other persists in making one-sided efforts, that is "unwise." Hearing this, Qian Cheng's spirits lifted, acknowledging that ultimately, he only wanted Jiang Baiju to be happy and would support him no matter whom he chose.

Lin Nuoyan then playfully asked if Qian Cheng needed more friends, specifically "the scientific research kind." The next day, everyone went out together. Unlike their previous tense encounters, Jin Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju were openly affectionate, deferring to each other. Jiang Baiju even effortlessly picked Jin Xiaoyu up with one arm, both of them beaming with happiness. This loving display caused Dao Ruifeng to turn away in discomfort, while Qian Cheng sighed and rubbed his forehead in displeasure.

Later, Jin Xiaoyu discovered another body exhibiting similar symptoms to previous victims, specifically cyanosis, and noted drug residue. She promptly notified Officer Su. While this time the cyanosis was lighter, its area was significantly larger. Both Jiang Baiju and Jin Xiaoyu suspected that the team manufacturing the special drug was continuing to use new patients for further experiments.

Jin Xiaoyu discussed these findings with Lin Nuoyan, who elaborated that many data in human medical history are illegally obtained, from unlawful live experiments to illegal cloning research. He pointed out that some individuals believe they can act above others, treating humans as mere objects, driven by what they perceive as noble beliefs to contribute to humanity and medical history. The irony, he noted, was that the data from these unethical experiments was often eventually used in scientific research.

Officer Su brought a young boy to Jin Xiaoyu, seeking advice on organ donation. The child asked Officer Su what he intended to donate. Officer Su lovingly told him he wished to donate his eyes so that the boy could see the world. Jin Xiaoyu was deeply moved by his words. However, Lin Nuoyan gently reminded Officer Su that organ donation rules do not allow for specifying a recipient.

The boy, hearing this, then told Officer Su he didn't want his eyes and wanted his daddy to be safe, to which Officer Su promised he would be fine. Subsequently, Officer Su met with Qian Tu to discuss the bus incident, but his inquiries proved fruitless. Qian Tu stated he didn't know the victim but his brother did, and that he only investigated at his brother's request.

Officer Su inferred that Qian Tu had used "inappropriate means" to bring the false witness to the police. Officer Su warned Qian Tu against further rash actions, promising that the police would uncover the truth and ensure justice for the victim. Qian Tu agreed, reiterating that no one who saves others should die in vain. As evening fell, Officer Su drove home alone. On his way, he received an infuriated phone call.

He sternly warned the person on the other end not to harm "that child" in the slightest, threatening to fight them to the death if they dared. Immediately after hanging up, he was momentarily blinded by the high beams of an oncoming car. He recognized the driver as someone he had been looking for and quickly turned his car around to pursue them.

The chase was intense, but Officer Su, distracted for a moment, was hit by a speeding truck from the side, resulting in his hospitalization. Jin Xiaoyu, back home with Jiang Baiju, curiously asked why he cultivated so many flowers. Jiang Baiju revealed that he was searching for a meteorite. He recounted how, during a period of semi-consciousness, he had seen many exquisite flowers that he had never encountered again.

Despite traveling worldwide and visiting countless flower fields, he never found them. So, he had spent eighty years planting various flower seeds, yet none had resembled the original flowers. Jin Xiaoyu speculated that the flowers might have mutated due to the meteorite's radiation, a possibility Jiang Baiju acknowledged, though he noted that not even similar species had grown.

Jin Xiaoyu expressed her happiness about their life together, like a normal couple feeding pets, taking walks, chatting, and having their "unreliable children" (Dao Ruifeng and Qian Cheng) cook for them. Jiang Baiju jokingly complained about Qian Cheng's cooking, lamenting the "hardships" of his long life. Officer Su's wife, Wen Yu, found Jin Xiaoyu, informing her about Officer Su's car accident.

Wen Yu further disclosed that she had recently discovered her husband had been secretly transferring money to an outside account every month and had a second, hidden phone. She suspected him of having an affair. She had asked his police colleagues to investigate the account, which was registered to a woman, but everyone at the station had covered for him. Jin Xiaoyu was puzzled, wondering why Officer Su's last phone call before falling into a coma was to her.

Cheng Weilan later provided clarification: Officer Su, in his semi-conscious state, kept asking for "Jin Xiaoyu, the volunteer," and expressed his wish to donate his corneas to a child named Xiao Pei. Jin Xiaoyu then realized that Xiao Pei was likely the blind boy who had accompanied Officer Su to the organ donation consultation earlier. This revelation was complicated further when Cheng Weilan revealed that Xiao Pei was not Officer Su's wife's biological son.

Episode 18 Recap

Qian Cheng awoke from a vivid hallucination where he spoke to Ye Lai, telling her he had met a new friend named Jin Xiaoyu. In the dream, Ye Lai encouraged him to embrace a new life and new friendships, implying she would not return and he should move on from the past. After waking, Qian Cheng encountered Lin Nuoyan. Qian Cheng mentioned he was getting used to Jin Xiaoyu's presence and even missed her when she wasn't home.

He defined a true friend as someone who shares adversities, and when Lin Nuoyan asked if they were friends, they agreed to work towards that, with Lin Nuoyan remarking on Qian Cheng's honesty despite his reserved demeanor. Later, Jin Xiaoyu found herself confronted by Wen Yu, Officer Su's wife. Xiaoyu stated she was at the hospital to visit Officer Su and clarified that she was not a mistress, offering her friend, an organ donation coordinator, as proof.

Wen Yu, however, revealed she already knew about her husband's illegitimate child. She explained that after returning from a summer camp, she found unusual items in their home, such as tissues and tableware specifically for children, complete with bite marks, and child's hair on a lint roller, indicating the child had been a frequent guest.

Wen Yu confessed that she had been pretending to be an enraged shrew to trick Xiaoyu, admitting she would have physically assaulted Xiaoyu if she had confirmed she was the mistress. Just as the confrontation intensified, Qian Cheng appeared, putting his arm around Xiaoyu and declaring himself her boyfriend. Wen Yu mocked them. Xiaoyu, though irritated, insisted she could handle the situation herself.

Xiaoyu then tried to reason with Wen Yu, recounting how Officer Su had expressed his wish to donate his corneas to a child, "Xiao Pei," saying that if anything happened to him, his eyes would go to Xiao Pei so the child could see the world. Wen Yu responded with a sarcastic smile, perceiving this as her husband's cunning plan. Xiaoyu argued that despite any wrongdoing by Officer Su, the child was innocent.

Wen Yu, however, remained unmoved, firmly stating her refusal before donning sunglasses and departing without signing the organ donation papers. Xiaoyu later reflected to Jiang Baiju, expressing her dismay that Wen Yu could be so heartless. Jiang Baiju suggested that some people conceal their true emotions. Walking through the school campus, Wen Yu was overcome by memories of her past with Officer Su.

She remembered them as innocent high school classmates, and a playful moment when he sneaked out of training to share a watermelon with her. She also recalled his heartfelt proposal with a bouquet of "cheesy" red roses and his promise to marry her grandly. This stark contrast with her current reality of perceived betrayal left her deeply hurt.

Jiang Baiju, discussing marriage with Xiaoyu, observed that it's a unique bond, where two unrelated individuals create a lineage but constantly face the risk of betrayal. He noted that betrayal in marriage can lead to self-loathing, a feeling Wen Yu now deeply understood. Meanwhile, Officer Su, having been rushed to the hospital after his car crash, was out of immediate danger, but his condition remained critical.

Lin Nuoyan and Cheng Weilan, preparing for the organ donation, were informed by Chief Zhang that they needed to secure the family's consent. Lin Nuoyan explained to his team that Wen Yu was a tough negotiator, having already tried to trick them while pretending to be an angry wife. When Wen Yu arrived at the hospital, Lin Nuoyan tried to negotiate with her, but she remained defiant, stating she would not sign the papers.

She warned them that if they continued to press her, she would send Officer Su's parents home and refuse to authorize any further medical intervention during future emergencies. Cheng Weilan, feeling the immense pressure, went to the hospital balcony. Dao Ruifeng, seeing her distraught and close to the railing, rushed to stop her, fearing she might jump.

Cheng Weilan, however, was merely playing a prank, then shared a touching story about her parents who met in that very hospital: her father had appendicitis, and her mother, an emergency doctor, saved him. Her father "paid with his body" out of gratitude, leading Cheng Weilan to take her mother's surname. Wen Yu sought out Xiaoyu again, bringing up the illegal drug case that Officer Su had been investigating.

Xiaoyu was surprised by Wen Yu's knowledge but revealed that she had only provided some intelligence, not full case details. Xiaoyu reiterated her plea for organ donation, but Wen Yu vehemently refused, stating that Officer Su "cannot donate." This revelation allowed Xiaoyu to realize that Wen Yu's refusal was not about personal animosity, but because his organs might be compromised.

Xiaoyu pressed further, questioning why Wen Yu, as a police officer's wife, didn't approach senior officers for help regarding the supposed mistress, instead turning to a rookie. Xiaoyu's intuition told her that Officer Su was a righteous man who wouldn't cheat, and she suspected Wen Yu was bluffing and concealing something. Wen Yu, in turn, expressed her own anguish, stating that after eight years of a relationship since high school, seeing her husband become a "different person" was incredibly painful.

Wen Yu then showed Xiaoyu two pills she had found in Officer Su's pocket. Xiaoyu immediately recognized them as illicit drugs. Wen Yu explained that she had received a threatening phone call from drug traffickers who revealed Officer Su was working with them and threatened to expose his illegitimate son if she didn't hand over case files. She believed Officer Su was colluding with the traffickers to support his mistress and child.

Wen Yu confessed her actions were an attempt to protect her husband's and the police force's reputation. Xiaoyu, however, suggested that Officer Su might be framed.

Later, Xiaoyu and Cheng Weilan, joined by Jiang Baiju, discussed the situation, reviewing a timeline of events: Officer Su bringing a suspected illegitimate son to a university event, his car accident that same night, Wen Yu discovering a large sum of money in their account and regular transfers to an unknown account, followed by the threatening phone call related to the case. Jiang Baiju commented on how overwhelming these discoveries would be for a wife.

Xiaoyu and Cheng Weilan theorized that the drug traffickers were trying to frame Officer Su, pointing out the illogical sequence of events: why would criminals pay off an "accomplice" after his death, and then threaten his wife for case information? They noted that the only concrete evidence was the bank account balance; Wen Yu's claims of phone threats and her husband's corruption lacked independent corroboration.

They deduced that the traffickers aimed to discredit Officer Su, ensuring his case would be reassigned and the investigation slowed down. Jiang Baiju received the case files from Xiaoyu and noted that the situation was either simpler or more complex than they initially thought.

Episode 19 Recap

Jiang Baiju mused that the situation was simpler than they initially believed, yet also potentially more complicated. He concluded that the culprits intended to disrupt the police investigation but dared not confront law enforcement directly, so they targeted Wen Yu, Officer Su's wife, by exploiting her suspicions. Officer Su's parents arrived at the hospital, grieving as the doctor announced that Officer Su was brain-dead and his heart and lungs would stop within minutes.

Wen Yu, still believing her husband had cheated, tearfully told him, "You cheated on me. But I won't do you wrong. May you rest in peace." Learning the full truth from Jiang Baiju, Jin Xiaoyu rushed to the hospital and confronted Wen Yu, who vehemently refused to sign the organ donation papers. Jin Xiaoyu revealed that Officer Su had not cheated and that the child was not his son.

She urged Wen Yu to trust her husband and sign the papers immediately, warning that she would regret it for the rest of her life as time was running out for organ donation. Jin Xiaoyu pressed her to "bet on your husband's moral quality and the love between you two." Despite her deep sorrow and a threat to sue if she was being misled, Wen Yu bravely signed the consent form.

With the signed document, the medical team, led by Weilan, immediately began the organ retrieval process. Soon after, Captain Liu and Zhang Di arrived with Xiaopei and his mother. Captain Liu explained to Wen Yu that Xiaopei's father was an anti-drug officer and a police academy classmate of Officer Su, who had been killed in the line of duty four years prior. Since then, Officer Su and his colleagues had taken turns caring for Xiaopei.

This year, Xiaopei's mother remarried, and Officer Su, out of concern for the boy, often took him on outings. The drugs in question were found in Xiaopei's pocket after one such outing. Captain Liu clarified that the drugs were intentionally placed on the child by the criminals to threaten Officer Su and compel him to abandon his investigation, which only infuriated Officer Su.

He added that Officer Su hadn't failed to turn in the drugs; rather, they simply hadn't had time before the accident occurred. Wen Yu was overcome with regret, realizing she had terribly misunderstood and wronged her husband. She apologized to Jin Xiaoyu for her harsh words, thanking her for revealing the truth, and promised to personally apologize to Doctor Cheng (Weilan) once she was free.

Jin Xiaoyu assured her that her signature was the best form of apology, and Officer Su would be proud. Wen Yu then shared her plan to transform Officer Su's memorial service into their long-overdue wedding, as they had only registered their marriage without a ceremony. Jin Xiaoyu enthusiastically agreed to attend, promising not to miss such a unique event. Wen Yu expressed a strange comfort in knowing that parts of Officer Su would live on through organ donation.

Jin Xiaoyu eloquently explained the medical process, detailing how new blood and oxygen would revive his organs, allowing them to thrive in new bodies and for the recipients to "take care of the world for your husband." Wen Yu deeply thanked Jin Xiaoyu. Later, Dao Ruifeng waited for Weilan outside the operating room and brought her supper. He asked why she dedicated herself to the demanding and uncompensated work of organ donation.

Weilan explained that being an organ coordinator was a personal conviction and a deep-seated knot in her heart. She recounted how her friend, Jin Xiaoyu, had once signed an organ donor agreement while gravely ill, declaring that her life would continue in others. As a doctor, Weilan witnessed countless deaths, leading to feelings of powerlessness and fear. It was during these times that her friend's words resonated: "If organs can be donated, then life can continue.

If life can continue, wouldn't hope continue?" Becoming a coordinator alleviated her fear of death, knowing that even when she couldn't save a life, she could offer hope by asking families about organ donation. She found profound beauty in the words "Yes, I do," not in a wedding ceremony, but at a hospital ward door, signifying a family's willingness to give life.

Dao Ruifeng then asked what became of her friend, and Weilan revealed that the friend was none other than Jin Xiaoyu, sharing a humorous memory of Jin Xiaoyu pranking her about dying and donating her corneas. Dao Ruifeng was surprised by this revelation. At Officer Su's funeral-wedding, Wen Yu, dressed as a bride, reaffirmed her vows of love and devotion to her late husband.

After the ceremony, Wen Yu gave her bridal bouquet to Jin Xiaoyu, warmly telling her it was for her and wishing her happiness. She recognized Jiang Baiju as Jin Xiaoyu's true boyfriend, having observed that Jin Xiaoyu's eyes sparkled only when looking at him. Jin Xiaoyu accompanied Jiang Baiju to pay respects at Old Chen's grave. Jiang Baiju formally introduced Jin Xiaoyu as his girlfriend to his departed friend.

He reminisced about old book clubs for couples, which he, being single, could never join, forced instead to memorize scripts in drama club. He confessed that seeing Old Chen with his fiancée ignited a desire to someday bring his own girlfriend to a book club and monopolize the discussion. Jin Xiaoyu playfully teased him about his "single dog's resentment." It was Jiang Baiju's birthday. Qian Cheng and William, having been reminded by Jiang Baiju's grandmother, prepared a cake.

Jin Xiaoyu even made pig-shaped steamed buns, which Jiang Baiju declared made this his happiest birthday ever. Jiang Baiju and Jin Xiaoyu openly displayed their affection, drawing playful complaints from Dao Ruifeng, who told them to control themselves as "two children" (referring to Qian Cheng and William) were present.

Jiang Baiju then proposed to Jin Xiaoyu, who, after a moment, accepted, but stipulated that she wouldn't fully commit until they had discussed his future plans, emphasizing that his decision should come from his own heart, not out of obligation or for her. Amidst their banter, they all took a group photo together.

Later, Jin Xiaoyu visited a little girl named Bella in the hospital, who had tried to sneak out, claiming she was bored and her mother, who promised to take her to an amusement park, hadn't arrived. Lin Nuoyan also arrived, having been called by Miss Wang (Bella's caregiver) because Bella was being mischievous, as he was more effective at handling her than her mother. Lin Nuoyan gently lectured Bella about the consequences of her actions on others.

Bella, a child star, was surprisingly delighted to be secretly photographed by a paparazzi, calling herself "the most valuable child star this year." She then earnestly asked Jin Xiaoyu if she would take care of Lin Nuoyan for her after she died, explaining that Lin Nuoyan often seemed sad and needed looking after. Jin Xiaoyu gently advised Bella that true connection was about genuine feelings, not time or money.

As Lin Nuoyan returned, Jin Xiaoyu prepared to leave for her own doctor's appointment. Bella then told Lin Nuoyan that Jin Xiaoyu was "fine in other aspects" except for her looks. Amused and touched by Bella's concern for him, Lin Nuoyan fondly called the young girl a "little brat."

Episode 20 Recap

Xiaoyu returned home to find several men on the phone, looking strange. Puzzled, she asked Jiang Baiju, who informed her that Qian Cheng’s parents’ 40th wedding anniversary celebration was approaching. The Qian family's profound background made the banquet a crucial social occasion for their business partners, so choosing a suitable dance partner was extremely important.

Jiang Baiju had received an invitation, expressed envy for such a long-lasting marriage, and to Xiaoyu's surprise, agreed to attend, something he hadn't done for the 30th anniversary. Xiaoyu teased him that romance had changed him. Meanwhile, Qian Cheng desperately tried to secure a date.

He showed Xue Wanwan several exquisite dresses from his collection, including a Qing'ai classic designed by Mrs. Dao and a signature piece by a designer named William, asking her to be his date for the upcoming banquet. Xue Wanwan was shocked, reiterating that she considered them "bros" and had never thought of him as a man or herself as a woman in their relationship. Attending as his date would publicly declare them a couple, which she adamantly refused.

Qian Cheng, feeling wronged, explained he was out of options and wouldn't be bribing her with such valuable dresses if he could find anyone else. Xue Wanwan dismissed his plea, calling him out on his poor social skills and stating her principle against romantic involvement with her "bro's bro," implying William (Xue Zaozao).

She even suggested he ask her cousin, who was single, but Qian Cheng dismissed it, saying his brother had rejected her cousin, and taking her would be an insult to his brother. He also mentioned meeting Cao Guangming’s daughter, an e-commerce tycoon, who was single. Xue Wanwan was unimpressed, arguing that such a person was not suitable for the Qian family.

Ultimately, she refused, explaining that because Qian Cheng's mother and brother actually liked her, his brother, Xue Zaozao, would force them to marry on the spot if they appeared together. At the hospital, Dao Ruifeng sought out Weilan, asking her to be his date for the same anniversary event. Weilan had just discussed Xiaoyu's worsening health and upcoming consultation with a colleague, emphasizing the importance of keeping it secret from Jiang Baiju, nicknamed Bai, to avoid him doing something drastic.

Dao Ruifeng used this knowledge to his advantage, threatening to reveal Xiaoyu’s condition to Jiang Baiju if Weilan refused to be his date. Weilan accused him of being inhuman, but Dao Ruifeng declared he only wanted to be a "beast" in front of her. Weilan scoffed at the constant need for dance partners in their social circle, comparing it to her mother’s elderly dance classes.

When she suggested he invite Xue Wanwan, Dao Ruifeng dismissed it, explaining that Xue Wanwan's brother, Xue Zaozao, would "break his legs" if he dated his sister. Dao Ruifeng insisted that as a popular person, he had limited options within his circle, half of whom were "bros," and he needed an "excellent and independent female outside my social circle" like Weilan.

Meanwhile, Xiaoyu was trying on dresses for the event with Jiang Baiju, playfully bickering about the styles and her preference for more "windproof" attire. Jiang Baiju had chosen only three dresses for her, joking that the rest were for Qian Cheng. Xiaoyu expressed doubt that Qian Cheng could fit into such dresses and wondered if he had found a date. Suddenly, Lin Nuoyan called Xiaoyu, looking anxious. Jiang Baiju, though reluctant to let her answer, allowed her to step outside.

Lin Nuoyan revealed that Bella had run away from the hospital. Jiang Baiju told Xiaoyu to change quickly and, despite his usual avoidance of public appearances, insisted on accompanying her to the Bajiao Amusement Park, refusing to let her go alone with Lin Nuoyan. At the Bajiao Amusement Park, Xiaoyu was on the phone with Lin Nuoyan, reporting no luck finding Bella in various areas, while Jiang Baiju had separated from her to search elsewhere.

Jiang Baiju then spotted a little girl wearing sunglasses indoors, just like him. He grabbed her, and it turned out to be Bella. Bella, thinking he was sent by the hospital, panicked and begged him to release her, even calling him "Grandpa" when he insisted. She revealed she had leukemia and would not live long, and her hair was almost gone. Upon learning he was Lin Nuoyan's friend, Bella's demeanor changed instantly.

She assertively demanded he bring Lin Nuoyan to her or text him immediately, insisting on a mini-train ride first, despite everyone being worried. Jiang Baiju called Lin Nuoyan, telling him Bella was found and to meet them at the Romon Train. Lin Nuoyan soon arrived, and after Bella tearfully pleaded that it was her dying wish, he agreed to ride the mini-train with her "just this once." Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu also joined them.

During the ride, Lin Nuoyan gently told Bella to apologize to Miss Wang and her mother after they returned. Bella, however, refused to apologize to her mother, accusing her of breaking promises to bring her father and take them on the train. She complained that her mother only cared about money, endorsements, and acting roles, not her well-being.

Lin Nuoyan tried to reassure her, explaining her mother's focus on money was to afford her better medical care, and that no one loved her more than her mother. Bella, precociously, said she wasn't stupid and knew her mother would simply have another child and forget her if she died. Jiang Baiju, hearing this, quipped that Bella’s parents were divorced, so her mother couldn't have another baby with her father, but Bella retorted that children could be had without marriage.

Bella then asked Lin Nuoyan if he would forget her. He promised he wouldn't, reminding her she was his girlfriend. Bella, citing something Jin Xiaoyu had told her, decided they should just be friends, as being his girlfriend would make him a "giant baby." She named Lin Nuoyan her "second friend in this world," with Miss Wang being the first. Exhausted by the children's drama, Xiaoyu declared she wouldn't have kids in the future, to which Jiang Baiju heartily agreed.

Back at the hospital, Bella's mother angrily berated Miss Wang for Bella's escape, threatening to dock her pay. Bella, growing weaker and struggling to breathe, simply wanted her mother to hug her, but her mother continued scolding the care worker. Bella, left alone, said goodnight to her doll and drifted off to sleep. At Bella's funeral preparations, staff discussed her passing, noting her mother's public display of grief.

Xiaoyu, preparing Bella's remains, was shocked to discover faint purple spots on her body. This raised her suspicions; Bella, despite having leukemia, had not experienced significant hair loss during chemotherapy, and both she and Mrs. Xu, another patient, were in VIP wards. Xiaoyu realized Bella had been given the "specific drug." Distraught, she informed Jiang Baiju, who arrived after being alerted by Xue Zaozao and Weilan about Xiaoyu's emotional distress.

Xiaoyu explained that the "specific drug" used in Bella's case was an upgraded version, making the cyanosis barely visible except for small patches on her back and near her neck. She urged Jiang Baiju to send a sample for testing, fearing that if her suspicions were correct, many other patients in the Second Hospital were also on the drug.

She expressed profound relief that Bella’s mother had not signed an organ donation consent form, preventing the transfer of potentially virus-laden organs to another person. The thought of this hidden danger and the cruelty of using a 12-year-old child for drug testing chilled Xiaoyu to the bone, with Jiang Baiju sharing her outrage. On the day of the anniversary banquet, Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju arrived.

Xiaoyu and Qian Cheng immediately fell into a playful argument, betting on whether Dao Ruifeng would have a female date. To Qian Cheng’s chagrin and envy, Dao Ruifeng arrived with Weilan as his date. Qian Cheng later prepared to enter the hall alone when a woman suddenly took his arm. He turned, surprised, as memories flooded his mind. It was Ye Lai, his childhood sweetheart. Ten years prior, they had been kidnapped.

The incident was widely known because Qian Cheng, in a heroic act to save Ye Lai, was thrown from a tall building by the kidnappers and miraculously survived. After that, Ye Lai went abroad to study, and Qian Cheng disappeared for many years. At the party, Qian Tu, Qian Cheng’s brother, expressed his frustration to Xiaoyu about Qian Cheng and Ye Lai being affectionate, noting their parents' silence on Ye Lai indicated disapproval.

He also complained about Dao Ruifeng bringing two dates to the event, a typical move for him. Xiaoyu, recalling that Xue Zaozao and Weilan had mentioned Qian Cheng's previous panic disorder, asked Qian Tu if Qian Cheng was at risk of a relapse. Qian Tu was surprised by her knowledge, to which Xiaoyu explained she had pieced it together from various sources. Qian Tu praised her intelligence, vowing never to lie to her.

Later, Qian Cheng experienced a vivid nightmare, reliving the kidnapping where he fought frantically to protect Ye Lai from the kidnappers, who threatened to torture her. He woke in a cold sweat, his hands cold. Qian Tu, noticing his distress, offered to arrange psychological counseling, but Qian Cheng declined, attributing it to fatigue. Qian Tu then asked if Qian Cheng still loved Ye Lai.

Qian Cheng admitted he didn’t know, but seeing her transported him back to a time when "those awful things never happened," even though the nightmare still haunted him. Qian Tu complained about his friends, including William (Xue Zaozao), all being absorbed in romance, leaving him to uphold Qing'ai with his "handsome face and talent." Qian Cheng retorted that Xue Zaozao had called, threatening further compensation if he "pestered his sister," implying Xue Wanwan.

Qian Cheng sarcastically asked how much the new compensation would be, arguing that it was Xue Wanwan who pursued him. Qian Tu teasingly promised to buy Qian Cheng an electric wheelchair for his protection. Later, Wen Zhuren decided to turn Officer Su's funeral into a wedding, as they had never formally married during their long courtship. Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju attended this special ceremony.

After the ritual, Wen Zhuren gave her bridal bouquet to Xiaoyu, and the two conversed happily, their past misunderstandings and sharp edges gone. Xiaoyu accompanied Jiang Baiju to pay respects to Old Chen. Jiang Baiju recalled how years ago, book clubs were popular, with two or three couples discussing books in the park. Lacking a girlfriend then, he could only attend drama club, forced to memorize scripts.

Seeing Old Chen with a girlfriend, he vowed that when he had a girlfriend, he'd be the first to join a book club, enthusiastically discussing so no one else could get a word in. It was Jiang Baiju's birthday. Xiaoyu and a few others gathered to celebrate the more than one-hundred-year-old man. Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju openly displayed their affection, as if no one else was around, prompting Dao Ruifeng to playfully remind them.

After blowing out the candles, everyone gathered in the courtyard for photos, laughing and playing joyfully. Later, Xiaoyu visited a little girl in the hospital who particularly liked Lin Nuoyan and knew he needed care. Lin Nuoyan was deeply moved upon hearing this.

Episode 21 Recap

Weilan and Xue Wanwan were eating noodles in the cafeteria when Dao Ruifeng arrived. Dao Ruifeng immediately began bickering with Xue Wanwan, completely ignoring her and stating his eyes were only on Weilan. Xue Wanwan reminded him that her brother, Xue Zaozao, had once injured Dao Ruifeng, causing a mild concussion, and had to pay over 500,000 yuan in compensation. Dao Ruifeng retorted that Xue Zaozao had recently announced he would invest in him again.

Dao Ruifeng then shared that he used a small portion of the compensation to buy a cheap computer to write web novels, and spent the remaining 400,000 yuan on fake view numbers, which unexpectedly led him to become one of the Top-10 writers. Xue Wanwan, in turn, teased him about his injuries, jokingly offering to marry him to "offset her brother's sin" if he became disabled and stayed in a wheelchair, preventing him from flirting.

Weilan, observing their exchange, grew worried and asked about Qian Cheng. Dao Ruifeng mentioned Qian Cheng had recently been "having a spring dream" in his office. Weilan quickly stressed the importance of immediate psychological counseling for Qian Cheng, explaining that once a patient starts dreaming, their emotions become unstable and they are prone to mental breakdowns. She emphasized that the patient's own honest self-disclosure is crucial for successful therapy, and any concealment would stagnate his treatment.

Dao Ruifeng tried to brush it off, claiming his ten years of "counseling" had been futile, but Weilan insisted that if he truly considered Qian Cheng a brother, he should help him get proper help rather than concealing his issues, as his condition would only worsen. After learning that there were new issues with Bella’s body, Lin Nuoyan rushed to Xiaoyu. Unsure how to proceed, Xiaoyu drove Lin Nuoyan to Qing'ai Building.

On the way, Lin Nuoyan discussed Bella’s autopsy findings: very faint cyanosis and no signs of hair loss. He deduced that this indicated the specific drug was close to being successfully developed, as the drug's efficacy and side effects are key indicators. Xiaoyu, perplexed, asked why Bella and Mrs. Xu had died if the drug was nearing success. Lin Nuoyan explained that the drug wasn't a miracle cure for terminal illnesses like leukemia or cancer and still required auxiliary treatment.

He hypothesized that the current pill-takers had only accidentally encountered the medication, achieving partial therapeutic effects. Therefore, he believed there must be a long-term user—a true participant in the project—around the pill maker, and this individual might already be cured. Xiaoyu agreed, noting that external drug tests would not yield accurate information. After leaving the municipal funeral home, Xiaoyu and Lin Nuoyan realized a car was tailing them. Lin Nuoyan attempted to lose them but it was too late.

He instructed Xiaoyu to prepare to jump out of the car when he slowed down. Xiaoyu vehemently refused, wanting them to jump together, but Lin Nuoyan countered that there was nowhere for both of them to hide. Without waiting for her consent, he unbuckled her seatbelt and, after a countdown, pushed her out. After safely landing, Xiaoyu immediately called Jiang Baiju for help, but just as she hung up, a flash of red light signaled disaster.

Lin Nuoyan's car was severely hit and overturned by the pursuing vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital with a mild concussion, a dislocated arm, a sprained ankle, and multiple scratches. Xiaoyu, deeply concerned, volunteered to stay and care for him, much to Jiang Baiju's ill-concealed jealousy.

Jiang Baiju later spoke to a colleague, expressing frustration that Lin Nuoyan, the "unrequited love knight," hadn't died, but nonetheless arranged for two men to secretly protect Lin Nuoyan, believing the culprit would soon emerge. Ye Lai and Qian Cheng met to reminisce about their youth, finally verbalizing long-held feelings. Ye Lai, recalling their high school days, teased Qian Cheng for being too shy to confess his feelings, stating that everyone, including herself, knew he liked her.

Qian Cheng expressed regret for not acting sooner. Ye Lai thanked Qian Cheng for keeping her past secret from his therapist, which protected her reputation. However, she emphasized that keeping her secret was detrimental to his health. She then suggested he accompany her to America to see her therapist, where he could finally express everything. Qian Cheng, contemplating this, seemed lost in thought, resembling a "mediating monk," which Dao Ruifeng and Jiang Baiju noticed.

Qian Tu later advised Qian Cheng that his parents were open-minded and wouldn't object to Ye Lai's past, given she was a victim. He urged Qian Cheng to be clear about his feelings for Ye Lai, who had fought her family to return for him. Later, Jiang Baiju received a call from Qian Tu, who had located Zhao Shan. They drove to the hiding place but were too late; Zhao Shan had already fled.

The location was merely a temporary den, filled with photos mostly of Lin Nuoyan, with more recent ones including Xiaoyu. Qian Tu informed Jiang Baiju that Lin Nuoyan, whose parents died when he was young, was adopted at ten and moved to America, where he excelled academically, studying genetics and bio-economics, and became a charity enthusiast. Jiang Baiju, examining some old photos found in a book, recognized a particular flower he had been searching for for eighty years.

The photos also showed Lin Nuoyan in front of what looked like the Third Affiliated Hospital of Central Medical University, a place known for a major medical research accident. Jiang Baiju stressed the importance of finding this location. In the middle of the night, Qian Tu was startled awake by his dog's barking. He went downstairs to find his pet, Nuonuo, lying dead in a pool of blood.

Qian Cheng then appeared, completely unfazed by the scene, only remarking on the dog's noise. The next day, Xue Wanwan organized a KTV gathering with old classmates, including Ye Lai and Qian Cheng. She blamed her brother, Xue Zaozao, for secretly inviting Peng Zichun, a "playboy" she disliked, who then flirted with Ye Lai, making Qian Cheng visibly uncomfortable. During the festivities, a waiter rushed in to announce that "two friends" were fighting outside.

They found Qian Cheng slumped on a sofa while Peng Zichun was covered in blood. Qian Cheng was consequently placed in a special hospital for compulsory medical treatment, which Qian Tu grimly likened to a prison, noting Peng Zichun's severe injuries. Ye Lai, feeling immense guilt for the incident, decided to seek a settlement with Peng Zichun, who was hospitalized in the orthopedics department of Weilan's hospital.

She told Dao Ruifeng that her family wanted her to return to America due to the fight, and she intended to try one last time for Qian Cheng before leaving. Dao Ruifeng, despite his concerns about her safety and potential exploitation by the Peng family, agreed to accompany her to the hospital but wait outside. Meanwhile, Xue Zaozao ambushed and beat up Dao Ruifeng at the hospital.

Mrs. Dao was furious at Dao Ruifeng for fighting and failing to protect Qian Cheng, accusing him of betraying the Qian family's trust. She declared she would personally take over the management of Qing'ai, given Qian Cheng’s sudden "resignation" as CEO and the anticipated "upcoming turmoils" from the Peng and Xue families. Dao Ruifeng's uncle and Mrs. Dao then insisted he leave for France immediately, where his parents were waiting, asserting that his presence was only making things worse.

Dao Ruifeng, though reluctant to leave Qian Cheng, ultimately complied. Before departing at the airport, Dao Ruifeng approached Weilan, reiterating his sincere desire to pursue her and asking her to tell Qian Cheng that he would return for him. Weilan, feeling stomach pain, then excused herself to the bathroom.

Episode 22 Recap

Qian Tu found Jiang Baiju embroidering to stabilize his emotions and relieve stress. Qian Tu, observing Jiang Baiju's "exquisite" embroidery, then revealed "big news": the hospital in the photo had been located. Jiang Baiju immediately felt a sharp pain in his chest and urged Qian Tu to take him there at once.

Upon arriving at the dilapidated compound, Qian Tu, acting as a potential developer, told a security guard they were introduced by "Mr. Hu" to see the site for a factory expansion. The guard confirmed that twenty years ago, this place was indeed the prestigious Third Affiliated Hospital of the Central Hospital, a bustling hub for specialists and patients from across the nation. He remarked how desolate it was now.

As Jiang Baiju observed the flowers in the courtyard, his chest pain intensified, causing him to collapse. The security guard, noticing his frailty, advised them to leave, mentioning a local rumor that "weak people" who visit the site are prone to developing a disease characterized by "red spots." Later, Jiang Baiju asked Qian Tu to arrange a radiation test for the hospital, believing that the object he had been searching for was located there.

He explained that when he first encountered the stone, it was in the Shenlong Snow Mountain, and he thought it was buried by an avalanche. But it had made its way to the city. Jiang Baiju elaborated that the stone emitted intense radiation, and its minerals might be responsible for the "red spots" disease the guard mentioned. Qian Tu found the request for a radiation test challenging but agreed.

They also discussed the former hospital president, who died in prison, and his missing family, whom many patients were still seeking. Xiaoyu, having seen the photo of the mysterious flowers, realized they were familiar. She immediately called Jiang Baiju, asking him to meet her at the funeral home. Jiang Baiju and Qian Tu were on their way back when he received the call; Qian Tu jokingly remarked on Jiang Baiju finding time for romance amid the chaos.

At the funeral home, Xiaoyu informed them that she had sent people to protect Lin Nuoyan, leading to the discovery of a stalker, Zhao Shan, who escaped. Jiang Baiju had found the photo of the flowers in Zhao Shan's hideout. Xiaoyu confirmed that the flowers she had, which were from seeds Lin Nuoyan had given her and had just bloomed a couple of days prior, were identical to those in the picture.

Jiang Baiju told Xiaoyu he would speak with Lin Nuoyan about the situation. Qian Tu agreed to find radiation detection equipment after visiting Qian Cheng, while Jiang Baiju cautioned him to stay safe given the surveillance from the underground pharmacy and the Peng and Xue families. Later, Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu returned home to the sound of music. Inside, they found Dao Lan, William's second uncle.

Dao Lan introduced himself to Xiaoyu as "William's second uncle" and his "favorite guardian," prompting Jiang Baiju to playfully correct him, stating Dao Lan was only William's favorite "child" when William was five. Dao Lan then announced that William had "run away." Jiang Baiju, though not surprised, was astonished to learn that Wei Lan, his friend, had helped William escape. Dao Lan further revealed that William had bought a plane ticket to America.

Later that night, Xiaoyu noticed Jiang Baiju's hands trembling despite his calm demeanor, recognizing his nervousness. They discussed Lin Nuoyan, and Xiaoyu revealed she had already texted him, learning that the flowers came from his experimental field, which was overseen by President Zhang of Central Medical University. She had arranged for them to visit the field the next afternoon.

Jiang Baiju praised her initiative, and Xiaoyu explained she took action because Lin Nuoyan's feelings for her made it awkward for Jiang Baiju to ask. She playfully called Jiang Baiju a "troublemaker," reflecting on how love can be complicated despite modern desires for "chill relationships," but she still wanted to "bother" him more.

Xiaoyu then shared her deepest hope: if Lin Nuoyan succeeded in finding the meteorite and reverting Jiang Baiju to an ordinary man, she wished that after her death, he would live a simple life and experience a natural death in old age. Jiang Baiju assured her that even as an ordinary person, he would never find anyone like her, and promised to meticulously live out the years she wouldn't have.

Xiaoyu, with emotion, covered his mouth and expressed her desire for them to accompany and care for each other while she was alive. However, if she were gone, she implored him to promise he would pursue his own passions. Jiang Baiju tenderly replied that he only loved her. Xiaoyu then reciprocated, declaring her profound love for him. She joked about wanting to propose to him but that she had already "won" by saying "I love you" first.

Recalling her past rejection of his proposal, she now affirmed she "couldn't refuse" him, expressing happiness that he was becoming more understanding, which eased her nervousness. They then shared an intimate kiss under the moonlight. Lin Nuoyan brought Xiaoyu and Jiang Baiju to the flower seed experimental field. Xiaoyu asked Lin Nuoyan about the origin of the flowers.

Lin Nuoyan explained that his laboratory was privately funded by Eternal Life Technology, an American biotechnology company that manufactured medicinal products and medical devices. Years ago, this company partnered with Central University on a "tissue regeneration project," establishing a specialized laboratory where Lin Nuoyan was appointed as director. However, due to the project's highly confidential nature, he wasn't privy to all its details.

He clarified that the flowers in question belonged to a different project, for which President Zhang was solely responsible, and that President Zhang maintained a large field of experimental flowers whose location was confidential. Jiang Baiju then presented the photo found in Zhao Shan’s hideout. He explained that the man in the photo was a wanted criminal, a former doctor who fled twenty years ago after an illegal medical incident.

Jiang Baiju revealed that the flowers in the photo exhibited abnormal growth because their seeds had been exposed to "mutagenic radiation" from a meteorite. This fugitive had been using the meteorite to create medicine and conduct experiments on innocent patients, including Bella. Jiang Baiju asserted that if these flowers were indeed associated with President Zhang, then the meteorite must be with him, implying his involvement.

Lin Nuoyan, visibly agitated, vehemently denied any wrongdoing by President Zhang, calling him a respected scholar, medical scientist, and his former university teacher, whom he knew better than anyone. He insisted that President Zhang could not possibly harm anyone. Jiang Baiju calmly urged Lin Nuoyan to prioritize Bella's life over his teacher's reputation, suggesting that Lin Nuoyan's panic stemmed from already knowing the truth.

After a moment, Lin Nuoyan composed himself and suddenly remembered seeing the person from the photo in President Zhang's office. That night, Lin Nuoyan, Jiang Baiju, and Xiaoyu went to President Zhang's office. Xiaoyu stood guard while Jiang Baiju and Lin Nuoyan entered. Inside, they found a notebook with a group photo.

Jiang Baiju identified one of the individuals as Zhao Shan, and from other photos of doctoral and undergraduate students, they confirmed that Zhao Shan had indeed been President Zhang's student twenty years prior. As they prepared to leave, they heard President Zhang calling for help. Rushing to the source of the cries, they found Zhao Shan attacking President Zhang. Lin Nuoyan quickly intervened, rescuing President Zhang. However, during the commotion, Xiaoyu began to bleed from her nose.

Zhao Shan then attempted to attack Xiaoyu, but Jiang Baiju shielded her, sustaining an injury from the blade. Wounded, Jiang Baiju interrogated Zhao Shan, who identified Jiang Baiju as the "undead man" and confirmed that the meteorite was located in the former hospital, on the same floor as the flowerbed, protected by a containment device requiring special suits. Zhao Shan admitted to attacking President Zhang because the latter had become suspicious and intended to call the police.

Lin Nuoyan urged Xiaoyu to call an ambulance for Jiang Baiju, but Jiang Baiju, aware of his "special circumstances," insisted that President Zhang, who had suffered a spleen injury, needed immediate medical attention. Lin Nuoyan then instructed Xiaoyu to keep the events confidential and to guard Zhao Shan. Lin Nuoyan then left Jiang Baiju and Xiaoyu, who proceeded to the secret base where the meteorite was housed.

Upon seeing it, Jiang Baiju revealed he had first encountered the meteorite eighty years ago on the Yunnan snow mountain, and it was originally larger. He explained that he had acquired "unknown substances" from it that granted him immortality, making him impervious to aging or harm. Now, after living for a hundred years and feeling weary of his prolonged existence, he intended to return these substances to the meteorite, hoping to understand their true nature and potentially relinquish his immortality.

He sensed the substance within his heart wanting to reunite with the meteorite. Lin Nuoyan warned them that the anti-radiation device, once activated, would trigger a building-wide alarm in ten seconds, leading to the police seizing the meteorite. He cautioned Jiang Baiju that returning the substance could result in his death or other unpredictable consequences, as defying natural laws came with a price. Lin Nuoyan then left them to make their decision, reminding them not to remove their protective suits.

Xiaoyu then moved to wait for Jiang Baiju. Left alone, Xiaoyu lamented the possibility of Jiang Baiju dying before her, accepting it as the consequence of defying nature. She then dreamt aloud of them both living to a hundred and dying together. She tenderly confessed that her already short life felt even shorter after meeting him, as he had fulfilled all her dreams—being "handsome, rich, long-legged, old," and having "lived a long life."

She promised that if he died, she would immediately follow him and marry him after making him "beautiful." Jiang Baiju, promising to marry her, agreed to proceed quickly before the meteorite disappeared. Jiang Baiju then passionately kissed Xiaoyu before moving towards the meteorite. Later that night, Qian Tu was driving alone on a desolate road when his car suddenly malfunctioned. As he stepped out to inspect it, a motorcycle unexpectedly sped towards him.

The rider struck Qian Tu brutally from behind with a stick, sending him crashing painfully to the ground. The assailant dismounted and relentlessly continued to beat Qian Tu with the weapon. Qian Tu fought to resist, but his body was overwhelmed by agonizing pain.

Episode 23 Recap

Mrs. Dao was astonished to receive a photo from Jiang Baiju, showing the meteorite he had been searching for. She immediately called him, and he confirmed his discovery. Jiang Baiju described feeling his heart pound uncontrollably when near the meteorite, as if something within him wished to return to it, potentially curing him or even causing him to vanish entirely.

Mrs. Dao, filled with fear at the prospect of his disappearance, begged him to bring the meteorite back so they could all decide together. However, Jiang Baiju's resolve was firm. He explained that the specific drug syndicate leader had been captured, and the meteorite, hidden in the Eternal Life Technology building, was soon to be transferred to the police.

He felt he had to return the "thing" in his body to the meteorite before the authorities arrived, meaning he might not be able to bid her farewell in person. He entrusted her with the Qing'ai Group and asked her to look after Xiaoyu. Jiang Baiju confessed his deep affection for Mrs. Dao, likening her to a daughter and family, expressing gratitude for witnessing her grow but regret for not being able to accompany her further.

Mrs. Dao pleaded with him not to hang up, but Jiang Baiju, having made his decision, said his goodbyes and ended the call, slowly approaching the meteorite. As Jiang Baiju neared the meteorite, it pulsed with strange electrical light, causing sharp pain in his chest. Overhearing the commotion, Xiaoyu rushed into the laboratory, oblivious to Lin Nuoyan’s ominous smile behind her. Jiang Baiju slowly regained consciousness.

Xiaoyu playfully bit him and was overjoyed to see the wound wasn't healing instantly, a sign that he had finally become an ordinary man. As they embraced, Xiaoyu suddenly experienced another nosebleed. They then realized Lin Nuoyan was gone, and the security guards were unconscious. Sensing danger, Jiang Baiju swiftly led Xiaoyu out of the building. Mrs. Dao arrived to pick them up, and she, too, bit Jiang Baiju, confirming his ordinary human state.

Their relief was short-lived, as they noticed police cars following them. Xiaoyu called Lin Nuoyan, urging him to hide from the police, only for Lin Nuoyan to brazenly admit he had used Jiang Baiju to obtain the meteorite, claiming it and the "thing" inside Jiang Baiju belonged to him. Lin Nuoyan then recounted a story from eighty years prior.

A meteorite had fallen in his ancestral village, but life continued unchanged until Jiang Baiju, falling from the sky, smashed the Holy Stone and miraculously came back to life after seemingly dying. The village elders, believing Jiang Baiju to be a monster, attempted to bury him. However, an avalanche struck, burying the entire village.

Those who survived and left the village soon developed red spots on their skin; their descendants were born with the same affliction and died before reaching thirty. To break this curse, Lin's great-grandfather's generation began studying medicine. His father, along with colleagues, discovered radioactive elements in the meteorite—alien to Earth—and passionately developed what others called the "specific drug."

Yet, despite his pure intentions to cure rare diseases, particularly those affecting the surviving villagers' descendants, his father was condemned by public opinion and imprisoned. Lin Nuoyan explained he returned from America to continue his father’s research, determined to clear his name and validate his scientific contributions.

He thanked Xiaoyu for convincing him to spare Jiang Baiju's life, and he revealed his intent to further his research using the acquired "thing" to find a cure for Xiaoyu, urging her to wait for him. Xiaoyu then realized she might also be a descendant of that cursed village. Jiang Baiju blamed himself for the village's misfortunes, but Mrs. Dao quickly dismissed it as fate, stating Jiang Baiju's arrival during a time of war was merely destiny.

Xiaoyu's nosebleed worsened, prompting them to rush to the hospital. On their way, Mrs. Dao pondered how Lin Nuoyan could have known about Jiang Baiju's immortality. At this point, Dao Ruifeng stepped forward to explain, leading them to Qian Tu, who lay injured in the emergency room. Qian Tu, though shaken, informed them that Lin Nuoyan had escaped and that his accomplice was responsible for his attack.

Dao Ruifeng revealed that years ago, when Jiang Baiju saved Qian Cheng, a certain individual witnessed Jiang Baiju's miraculous revival. This person later met Lin Nuoyan, and their shared interests led them to become partners. Just then, Wei Lan emerged from the ward, prompting Mrs. Dao to prepare for a confrontation, but Dao Ruifeng stopped her, clarifying that Wei Lan was merely an emergency doctor and the real culprit was Ye Lai, whom he then pulled out of the room.

Ye Lai initially tearfully claimed coercion, stating Lin Nuoyan blackmailed her by withholding medicine crucial for her recovery and her reunion with Qian Cheng. However, Dao Ruifeng dismissed her performance. He presented her medical records from America, proving she had been treated for Antisocial Personality Disorder, not PTSD. He accused her of orchestrating the kidnapping a decade ago, where she had posed as a victim, and revealed her true targets were Qian Cheng and himself.

He further exposed her connection to two suspicious car accident deaths in America, both involving former prisoners who had previously served time for her kidnapping. These accidents occurred near Lin Nuoyan’s workplace and her own mental health clinic, suggesting they marked the beginning of her collaboration with Lin Nuoyan. Dao Ruifeng also revealed that Ye Lai had witnessed Qian Cheng's fall and Jiang Baiju's revival.

He threatened her with prolonged detention until her drug addiction manifested, promising to unite powerful families to apply pressure on her family. Faced with overwhelming evidence, Ye Lai shed her pretense. She revealed that if Lin Nuoyan obtained the "thing"—the substance from the immortal being—he would proceed to his experimental base in the snow mountains to research how to eliminate the side effects of the specific drug. If he failed to acquire it, he would flee the country.

Fully unmasked, Ye Lai defiantly stated that her past and present actions were solely motivated by money, not by any man, calling her accusers narcissistic for assuming otherwise. She proclaimed herself a "simple villain," dismissing Lin Nuoyan's ideals of curing diseases. Her true ambition, she declared, was to develop a specific drug that could eliminate the side effects of hard drugs, ultimately leading to their global legalization. With a menacing glare, she challenged her captors, noting that if they killed her, they too would face imprisonment, deeming it an unworthy sacrifice for someone like her.

Episode 24 (Ending) Recap

To uncover the truth, Jiang Baiju, Jin Xiaoyu, and Dao Ruifeng prepared to venture into the Shenlong Snow Mountain. Dao Ruifeng enlisted the help of Xiang, and Mrs. Dao dispatched several robust bodyguards. With preparations complete, the group set off. Back at the company, Mrs. Dao expressed her displeasure to Dao Lan, wondering why Jiang Baiju, now an ordinary man after achieving his wish, would risk himself in the snow mountains, deeming it meddlesome.

Dao Lan, however, felt that this particular incident allowed her to truly understand Jiang Baiju, believing he was like someone who leaves home for half a lifetime only to return still a youth. She added that after eighty years of life's struggles, Jiang Baiju still possessed the integrity of a young man, and deserved someone to accompany him, like Jin Xiaoyu, who would support and understand him without nagging about dangers. Mrs. Dao, irritated, dismissed Dao Lan.

The Shenlong Snow Mountain, the principal peak of the Zhaoyao Mountains, was their destination. Xiang explained that their target, a place called Phantom Decapitation, was just over the next mountain. He described the area as inauspicious and treacherous, with a valley resembling a headless human figure. Frequent earthquakes in recent years had left many unstable rocks, leading to landslides during rain and regular rockfalls. No one dared to visit, not even government survey teams.

Fortunately, Xiang knew a small path that would bypass the dangerous valley through a forest. As they carefully traversed the rocky, twig-strewn path, Jin Xiaoyu remarked on her complicated feelings, realizing she and Lin Nuoyan shared a connection to the mountain village. Dao Ruifeng jokingly suggested they could have been "brother and sister" had they fallen in love, prompting Jin Xiaoyu to silence him.

Upon reaching a mountain peak, Jiang Baiju was astonished to find the village still standing, as he distinctly remembered it being buried by an avalanche. They cautiously entered a misty forest where strange objects, shrouded in white cloth, hung from trees. Dao Ruifeng's curiosity led him to prod one with a stick, revealing a skeleton, which sent him screaming behind Jin Xiaoyu.

Jin Xiaoyu identified these as "ghost cocoons," an ancient nomadic burial practice where bodies were left on trees to decompose. However, upon closer inspection, she noted that the excellent condition of the teeth indicated these were modern individuals, not ancient ones. Jiang Baiju recalled a past warning that his arrival would bring disaster, suspecting the village might have been rebuilt and relocated.

As they entered the unpopulated village, they found it eerily quiet, devoid of furniture or household items, clearly just a facade. They decided to spend the night there before continuing their search. That night, while Xiang and a bodyguard were keeping watch outside, white mist suddenly billowed from a well, causing both men to collapse unconscious. Hearing the disturbance, Jin Xiaoyu went to investigate, but her throat suddenly dried, and she too fell to the ground.

A black-clad figure, Lin Nuoyan, emerged from the well and carried her away. The next morning, Jiang Baiju discovered Jin Xiaoyu missing, and Dao Ruifeng immediately suspected Lin Nuoyan. Following the scent of flowers, they set off to find her. Jin Xiaoyu awoke in a dark cave and followed a faint light to discover a stunning, flower-filled paradise outside. Lin Nuoyan appeared, admitting he rebuilt the village.

He revealed his intention for Jin Xiaoyu to stay, not as an experimental subject but as his partner, to cure her, claiming only he could do so. He spoke of their "homeland" where their ancestors lived for centuries, isolated from the outside world, a true "utopia."

He explained that he rebuilt the village according to his clan's oral traditions and reburied the skeletons found during excavation, as well as those of clansmen who had left the mountain, in the new forest grave. Lin Nuoyan lamented that an "outsider's intrusion" prevented them from being childhood friends. Jin Xiaoyu, however, found this life "stupid and boring." She accused him of harming Bella, Mrs. Xu, and Tan Yueran.

Lin Nuoyan blamed Ye Lai for supplying the drugs, claiming she was a "lunatic" he couldn't control. He argued that medical advancement inevitably required human sacrifice. Jin Xiaoyu countered that true sacrifice must be voluntary, otherwise it was murder, condemning his "repulsive" actions despite his "nice" words. Lin Nuoyan called her thoughts "annoying" and wondered how Jiang Baiju tolerated her, to which Jin Xiaoyu replied it was because Jiang Baiju "never did anything guilty."

Seizing an opportunity, Jin Xiaoyu pulled out pepper spray and blinded Lin Nuoyan before fleeing. She soon found herself trapped by an invisible barrier. Zhao Shan then appeared, intent on killing Jin Xiaoyu for betraying Lin Nuoyan and disrespecting their ancestral stone. Just as he lunged, Qian Cheng arrived, rescuing Jin Xiaoyu.

Qian Cheng explained that the barrier was part of Lin Nuoyan's setup and that he had sabotaged the water pump, which would soon explode, causing the hollow ground beneath them to collapse. As they bickered about whose fault it was, Jiang Baiju's group arrived, having noticed unusual activity on their way. Dao Ruifeng, startled, accidentally stumbled and knocked over a skeleton, eliciting a scream before Qian Tu suddenly appeared and protected him. The ground began to give way.

Qian Tu heroically caught Dao Ruifeng, who almost fell into the chasm. Jiang Baiju pulled Jin Xiaoyu and Qian Cheng to safety, while Qian Tu helped pull Jiang Baiju up. Watching the village crumble, Lin Nuoyan despaired over the loss of his "homeland," while a trace of melancholy also flashed in Jin Xiaoyu's eyes. Jiang Baiju told him he never sought such things, only a simple life with the one he loved.

Lin Nuoyan reminded him of Jin Xiaoyu's limited time, but Jiang Baiju firmly stated that the value of life is not measured by its length or wealth. In the aftermath, Jiang Baiju visited Lin Nuoyan in prison, showing him his new ID card. He informed Lin Nuoyan that despite the laboratory's destruction, fragments of the meteorite and his research reports were recovered by the police.

His mentor, President Zhang, had formed a research team to continue his work, deeming his research "very valuable." Lin Nuoyan was visibly moved, then urgently warned Jiang Baiju to relay a message to President Zhang: to be extremely cautious of the meteorite's radiation, particularly during mineral extraction, and to avoid all physical contact with the meteorite, even its dust. Jiang Baiju acknowledged his warning, noting it was already detailed in his report.

He also told Lin Nuoyan that Jin Xiaoyu still cared for him despite his past actions. Lin Nuoyan then asked Jiang Baiju what immortality felt like and if he would embrace it without the radiation. Jiang Baiju replied that he would not, explaining that mortals need love, warmth, regrets, and loss, and that true appreciation and love are found within a finite lifespan. Lin Nuoyan scoffed, calling Jiang Baiju a coward with a narrow perspective.

Meanwhile, Dao Ruifeng embarked on a new career as a writer, now living in a new home and facing a mortgage. Qian Cheng's therapy was progressing rapidly; he was able to frankly discuss his past feelings for Ye Lai, recognizing his "sense of duty" or "possessiveness" was misplaced given her "vicious" nature. Guided by his doctor to express his true feelings, Qian Cheng continued to recover and work at Qing'ai.

Jiang Baiju held his first fashion launch event, standing on stage for the first time as a "new designer." Dao Lan noted that this gradual public emergence was important, as an immediate takeover of William's position would draw too much scrutiny into his mysterious past. The man who had shaped Qing'ai's fashion for seventy years was now openly accepting public scrutiny as an ordinary, rising designer. Qian Tu, still helping Dao Ruifeng move, playfully complained about his companion.

Finally, Jiang Baiju and Jin Xiaoyu celebrated their wedding. A narrator reflected on how cliché, yet beautiful, it is for lovers to marry. They would experience all stages of life, from honeymoon to old age, becoming "old, ugly, boring, and senile," eventually passing away. But, the narrator concluded, what truly mattered was loving and protecting each other through it all.

At the bouquet toss, Mrs. Dao declined to participate, declaring that she preferred a lifetime of passionate love over the monotony of marriage. Dao Lan, however, was determined to catch the bouquet, declaring it a "political mission" from her mother.
