Wan Xinxin sent a message to Hua Ming, asking him to meet her at the gallery. Hua Ming, hoping for a reconciliation, rushed there. However, Wan Xinxin coldly handed him a bank card and the engagement ring he had once given her. She told him that the money covered all she owed him for rent and the gallery, with some extra as thanks for caring for her and Bao, and that from now on, they had no relationship.
Hua Ming tried to explain the truth about what happened three years ago, but Wan Xinxin declared it meaningless and pushed him out of the gallery door. From outside, Hua Ming pleaded with Wan Xinxin to listen, insisting on telling her the full story of three years ago. He recounted how, on that night, two patients were brought in: a young man in a more critical condition and her father, Wan Quanyou.
Despite knowing the young man was a criminal, Hua Ming believed that in the face of life, there should be no discrimination based on identity. He decided to operate on the more critical patient first, instructing his team to prepare for the second surgery immediately after. Tragically, by the time he was ready, Wan Quanyou had no vital signs.
Hua Ming explained that the criminal he saved later escaped from prison and murdered a guard and another inmate, leading to a death sentence. The victims' families branded Hua Ming an accomplice, claiming his scalpel had become a murder weapon. This event had haunted him, causing him to put down his scalpel, yet even now, he felt he had made the right choice in saving a life.
Wan Xinxin angrily challenged him, asking if saving a criminal and abandoning a good person, allowing the criminal to hurt others, was truly the right choice. Hua Ming defended himself, stating he was alone and intended to save both, but her father was already gone when he finished the first surgery, and he hadn't known it was her father. Wan Xinxin silenced him, telling him to stop talking.
Hua Ming desperately offered to do anything to make amends, but Wan Xinxin stated he already had, by saving her and Bao and providing for them. She reiterated that they now owed each other nothing. Hua Ming confessed his enduring love for her, how he had thought of her constantly even in America, and asked for another chance. Wan Xinxin tearfully told him it was impossible and that he should forget her.
After being discharged from the hospital, Qin Mother returned home, her spirits and health significantly improved thanks to Dr. Hua Ming. However, upon entering, she immediately smelled Liu Wei's perfume. Confronting Qin Gang, she accused him of bringing someone into their home while she was hospitalized and threatened to disown him if he continued seeing Liu Wei. Qin Gang then went to Liu Wei's home to tell her they couldn't see each other anymore, at least temporarily.
He explained that his mother had just had surgery and couldn't handle any stress, fearing her reaction if she discovered their continued contact. Liu Wei, however, was upset, questioning if he wanted to be with Wan Xinxin. Qin Gang clarified there was no chance with Wan Xinxin, but he was overwhelmed and couldn't endure the pressure.
Despite Liu Wei's pleas for him to stay, Qin Gang insisted he had to leave quickly to avoid arousing his mother's suspicion, concluding that they couldn't contact each other at all from now on. Liu Wei abruptly appeared at Qin Mother's house. Qin Mother was displeased and tried to send her away, but Liu Wei insisted she wanted to discuss Qin Gang. Qin Mother reluctantly allowed her inside.
Liu Wei tearfully recounted her supposed deep love for Qin Gang, claiming she went to America for studies and married her ex-husband out of true love. Qin Mother immediately exposed her lies, stating her investigations revealed Liu Wei married her ex-husband, a seventy-year-old man, solely for his alleged wealth and a green card, only to find he had no money. Qin Mother added that Liu Wei's departure caused Qin Gang immense pain and led him to a self-destructive phase.
Liu Wei dropped her pretense, acknowledging her youthful mistakes but claiming to truly love Qin Gang now. Qin Mother vehemently refused to accept Liu Wei, calling her calculating and manipulative. Qin Mother firmly told Liu Wei to stay away from her son. In response, Liu Wei's demeanor turned vicious. She told Qin Mother that she would soon die and that she, Liu Wei, could wait.
She declared her intention to marry Qin Gang after Qin Mother's death, move into the family home, and turn Qin Gang against his grandson. Enraged, Qin Mother trembled and collapsed onto the floor. Qin Mother reached out, begging Liu Wei for help, but Liu Wei merely watched her struggle in pain before fearfully fleeing the house.
As Liu Wei frantically drove away from Qin Mother's house, Xu Chunli, who was arriving to drop off Bao, witnessed her hurried departure and noticed the open front door. Filled with suspicion, Xu Chunli entered and found Qin Mother collapsed. She quickly called emergency services.
Xu Chunli relayed her suspicions about Liu Wei to Jiang Kaiyang, who, after some hesitation, sternly warned her to keep silent about Liu Wei's involvement to protect both their jobs, as Liu Wei had helped him secure his current position. Hua Ming decided to leave the city permanently and accept a research position in Shanghai, expressing to his senior colleague that this city held too many painful complications for him.
His senior, understanding his "place of heartbreak," agreed but urged him to say goodbye to Wan Xinxin. After much deliberation and seeking advice from Xu Ke, Wan Xinxin agreed to meet Hua Ming. At their meeting, Hua Ming formally apologized for the past. Wan Xinxin explained that while her rational mind, as a doctor, understood his choice to save the more critical patient, her emotions could not forgive him, as his presence constantly reminded her of her father's death.
She reiterated that they now owed each other nothing. Hua Ming desperately declared his love for her, but Wan Xinxin left. Shortly after their emotional parting, both Wan Xinxin and Hua Ming received urgent calls from the hospital. Hua Ming immediately rushed to the hospital to assist with Qin Mother, who had been brought to the emergency room in critical condition. Qin Gang and Wan Xinxin waited anxiously outside. Meanwhile, Liu Wei covertly observed the scene from a distance.
Despite Hua Ming's best efforts, he emerged from the operating room with the grim news that Qin Mother could not be saved. Qin Gang was overcome with grief, and Xu Chunli remained by his side to comfort him.
