During the capture of Chen Yun and Chen Bin, Ling Se and Xu Zilu accidentally collided and kissed, leading to an awkward moment between them. Ling Se suggested they treat it as a casual interaction between brothers, which angered Xu Zilu as he felt she was too intimate with her brothers. Ling Se then proposed they simply consider it an accident and move on, a suggestion Xu Zilu grudgingly accepted, telling himself it was just an accident.

That night, Ling Se dreamt she acquired a golden pig and excitedly kissed it repeatedly. To her shock, the pig transformed into Xu Zilu's face, startling her awake and revealing it was only a dream. Interrogating Chen Yun and Chen Bin, they confessed to colluding to steal high-quality fragrance from the warehouse to sell on the black market. They claimed they were forced into the crime because their mother was seriously ill.

Xu Mother was furious upon learning a mole existed within the family and felt they had betrayed the trust and nurturing they received from Xu family's Uncle. Meanwhile, Ping'er was arrested by Magistrate Wang as a murder suspect and imprisoned. Ling Se became extremely worried upon hearing this.

She went to Magistrate Wang, who explained the interrogation was difficult because Ping'er refused to reveal her true identity, making her the primary suspect due to the lack of progress in the investigation. Ling Se was allowed to visit Ping'er in jail, and they shared a tearful embrace.

Ling Se expressed her belief in Ping'er's innocence and urged her to reveal her identity, explaining the severity of the situation, including the risk of being sent to the Ministry of Justice if she continued to conceal the truth. Ping'er finally confessed that she is the granddaughter of the current Minister of the Bureau of Astrology and had run away from an arranged marriage in Furong City.

She stressed the need for secrecy, warning that revealing her identity would lead to being hunted down, and pleaded with Ling Se to keep it confidential. Ling Se promised to keep her identity a secret and vowed to find a way to help her. Ling Se then requested Magistrate Wang to continue investigating for the true murderer, arguing that convicting Ping'er without concrete evidence would be a miscarriage of justice, which Magistrate Wang acknowledged he would avoid.

Back at the Xu Mansion, Ling Se was unable to eat or rest, consumed by worry for Ping'er. Xu Zilu brought her pastries, urging her to eat and assuring her that Ping'er would be alright. Ling Se explained she couldn't eat thinking about Ping'er's hardship in jail, recalling her promise to share everything with her, and lamenting her helplessness. Xu Zilu asked how she and Ping'er had met.

Ling Se recounted the story: she met Ping'er when she was selling zongzi on the street and saw Ping'er looking hungry and distressed. Ling Se kindly offered her a zongzi. Ping'er, after eating a few bites, saw a small beggar boy and gave him the rest of the zongzi. Touched, Ling Se gave the beggar another zongzi and gave Ping'er a fresh one, asking why she shared when she was so hungry. Ping'er replied she felt the beggar was hungrier.

Noting Ping'er's seemingly good clothes, Ling Se asked about her situation. Ping'er explained she was a maid from Furong City who had been driven out by her master and madam. She had wages with her but gave the money to poor people she met along the way. Seeing that Ping'er had nowhere to go, Ling Se invited her to stay with her, promising that if she had food, Ping'er would too.

Ling Se told Xu Zilu that Ping'er was like family to her, and Xu Zilu responded by offering his help. Word spread throughout the city that the Xu family was harboring a criminal who had allegedly killed a high-ranking official from Furong City. This caused significant damage to their business, with many customers canceling orders and partnerships. Xu Mother expressed her concern, and some expressed doubts about Ping'er. Ling Se was saddened that people didn't believe Ping'er was innocent.

Xu Zilu advised the canceling businessmen to wait, promising to talk to Magistrate Wang about issuing a public announcement to dispel the rumors and catch the true killer, which would naturally resolve the situation. Ling Se's father also arrived, urging Xu Zilu to have Ling Se sever ties with Ping'er to protect the business. Xu Zilu agreed that separating Ping'er from the Xu family could resolve the business issue but tried to clarify he wasn't abandoning Ping'er.

Ling Se was upset, feeling Xu Zilu was just like her father— prioritizing profit over people. She told Xu Zilu that if he intended to cut ties with Ping'er, he might as well cut ties with her too, and she left in anger.

Ling Father then called Ling Se short-sighted and told Xu Zilu to get rid of the maid quickly, but Xu Zilu insisted that Ping'er was part of the Xu family and he had his own ways of handling the business. Ling Se went to Fulai Inn and complained to Liu Yeniang about Xu Zilu.

Tao Meili was present and sarcastically remarked that Ling Se was acting like a petty woman in a storybook, advising her to rely on her own capabilities instead of men. This exchange inspired Ling Se; realizing she should find her own way to save Ping'er, she decided not to return to the Xu Mansion and requested to stay at Fulai Inn.

Later, Xu Zilu, learning of Ling Se's whereabouts, instructed his servant to check on her at the inn and send food and supplies to Ping'er in prison, including an extra blanket. He also had Chen Yun and Chen Bin released. Ling Se explained her plan to Liu Yeniang to use a contact called "Nosy Parker" to investigate outside women who had recently arrived in the city, needing to stay at the inn for convenience, especially to avoid Xu Zilu. Liu Yeniang reluctantly agreed to let her stay, but with conditions on the duration.
