Su Xiaowan, still hurt by Gu Yanxi's past embrace with Cheng Qianyu and his choice of Cheng Qianyu during his amnesia, confronted him. She questioned his sincerity, believing his current feelings were merely an obsession, not genuine love, and cited his return of the sketch album as proof.
Gu Yanxi, having earlier passionately declared his unwavering love for her and his belief they were destined to meet, did not hear her specific accusations of obsession as he collapsed, burning with fever. As Su Xiaowan rushed to find a physician, he desperately clung to her, begging her not to leave and recalling how she would always disappear from his dreams. He then pulled her into a passionate kiss, confessing how much he missed her.
They eventually fell asleep in each other's arms. The next morning, Su Xiaowan, feeling awkward, quickly left. She soon learned that Ziqian had been injured. Rushing to his side, she was told that he had fallen into an animal trap after receiving a faked message from her. Believing Gu Yanxi was behind the scheme, Su Xiaowan angrily confronted him and slapped him, ordering him to stay away from her forever, saying there was no future for them.
Gu Yanxi, learning the extent of Ziqian's injury, confronted his attendant Yuan He, who confessed to sending a fake message from Su Xiaowan to Ziqian. Yuan He had intended for Ziqian to be trapped in a pit for only one night to create an opportunity for Gu Yanxi and Su Xiaowan to be alone. Yuan He insisted he had pushed Ziqian lightly and lined the pit with straw, but was horrified to learn of the animal trap.
Gu Yanxi, realizing Yuan He’s grave misjudgment, immediately instructed Yuan He to find a physician for Ziqian, but didn't attempt to explain himself to a furious Su Xiaowan. Ziqian, having regained consciousness, clarified to Su Xiaowan that he was injured while trying to catch a pheasant to make a shuttlecock for her; he had accidentally fallen into a hunter's trap and then stepped on an animal trap.
He explained the message was fake and that his injury was not her fault. Realizing she had gravely misunderstood Gu Yanxi, Su Xiaowan hurried to the inn where he was staying, only to be informed by the innkeeper that he had checked out and left the city an hour ago. She was left heartbroken and angry.
Overwhelmed by Gu Yanxi's sudden departure, Su Xiaowan drank heavily, convinced that he only spoke of love but abandoned her at the first sign of trouble. She eventually passed out, mumbling Gu Yanxi’s name. Ziqian found her and watched her sadly, acknowledging that despite his deep feelings and constant presence over the past three years, he could never truly replace Gu Yanxi in her heart.
The following morning, Su Xiaowan overheard inn guests discussing a young master of a jeweller named Gu who had drowned himself. Fearing it was Gu Yanxi, she rushed to the river. There, she found Gu Yanxi's seemingly lifeless body. Distraught, she cried over him, blaming herself for their quarrel and for not forgiving him. She confessed her deep love for him, admitting she had always been waiting for him to return and marry her.
At her confession, Gu Yanxi suddenly opened his eyes, startling everyone present. He then demanded she uphold her promise to marry him, playfully teasing her about her public display of affection. Their argument was interrupted when Ziqian arrived and confessed that the entire "suicide" scenario was his idea. He explained he had orchestrated this elaborate deception because he knew Su Xiaowan and Gu Yanxi loved each other, but Su Xiaowan's lingering emotional barrier prevented them from reconciling.
Despite his own feelings for Su Xiaowan, he wished for her happiness and knew her heart truly belonged to Gu Yanxi. Later, Ziqian explained his reasoning to Gu Yanxi, who had been preparing to leave to uncover the full truth of the past. Ziqian urged Gu Yanxi to return to Su Xiaowan, but Gu Yanxi insisted on first resolving the old misunderstandings that still separated them. Gu Yanxi also apologized for Ziqian’s injury.
Ziqian dismissed the apology, stating it was his own carelessness, and reiterated that Gu Yanxi should go back to Su Xiaowan, as she would worry. Ziqian then confessed to Gu Yanxi that he knew he could never be the one to make Su Xiaowan truly happy or sad, despite having spent three years by her side. He urged Gu Yanxi not to make her wait any longer, as her heart had always belonged to him.
Back at the inn, Ziqian explained to Su Xiaowan that he and Gu Yanxi had orchestrated the elaborate deception to help her confront her true feelings. Enraged by their trickery, Su Xiaowan locked herself in her room. Gu Yanxi tried to apologize through the door, calling her "my wife" and promising to make amends, but she ignored him.
After a period of silence, Su Xiaowan cautiously opened the door, expecting to see Gu Yanxi, but instead found Ru Ying and Cheng Qianyu. Cheng Qianyu confessed the full truth of the past, explaining that she wanted to unburden her conscience and clear the misunderstandings between Su Xiaowan and Gu Yanxi.
She admitted that she knew Gu Yanxi loved Su Xiaowan even before their marriage, and that Mammy Liu, acting on Cheng Qianyu’s behalf, had hired Scar Hui to kidnap Su Xiaowan to remove her as an obstacle. Su Xiaowan also learned that Cheng Qianyu had taken the comic book from Gu Yanxi when he was in a coma, further driving a wedge between them.
Cheng Qianyu recounted that when Gu Yanxi was severely injured saving Su Xiaowan and subsequently lost his memory, she viewed it as a divine opportunity for him to fall in love with her. She confessed to consciously ignoring Mammy Liu’s actions, including bribing Imperial Physician Zhao to tamper with Gu Yanxi's medication to prevent his memory from returning. Ru Ying, during a secret visit to treat Gu Yanxi, discovered the tampered prescription.
Cheng Qianyu then had Ru Ying abducted and sent away to prevent him from curing Gu Yanxi, regretting only later that she had implicated the one person who truly cared for her. She further revealed that even without his memories, Gu Yanxi's gaze for Su Xiaowan remained passionate, which caused her great frustration.
Her hope rekindled when she met the "real" Wan'er, leading Mammy Liu to bribe a steward to present this Wan'er to the Old Madam, fabricating evidence of Su Xiaowan’s collusion with Scar Hui, which resulted in Su Xiaowan being cast out of the Gu family. Ru Ying interjected, defending Cheng Qianyu against Su Xiaowan's criticisms and calling her his wife, implying their relationship.
Cheng Qianyu then apologized, attributing her past actions to her jealousy and unrequited love for Gu Yanxi since childhood. She acknowledged realizing too late that love cannot be forced, and that Gu Yanxi’s heart, through all trials and even amnesia, had always belonged solely to Su Xiaowan. Ru Ying then handed Su Xiaowan a restored comic book, explaining that Gu Yanxi had spent considerable effort restoring it and kept it by his side every day. Su Xiaowan, tears in her eyes, asked where Gu Yanxi was, and Ru Ying told her he was waiting outside.
