Unusual Idol Love Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Xihai City's technology companies, in collaboration with Kewen Entertainment, developed human-like artificial intelligence idols. As a test product of the first batch of AI idols, they possessed human emotions but had no control over their own destinies. One of these was the popular idol Hu Li.
Intern reporter Ji Nian inadvertently caused a public outcry when she published a video report titled "Hu Li Refuses Best Actor Award and Rebukes the Winner, Bai Dongchen," which included an audio recording of Hu Li's angry remarks about Bai Dongchen's acting. Soon after, news broke that Hu Li, suffering from depression, had committed suicide by jumping into the sea.
Ji Nian was called to her editor's office, where she was harshly reprimanded for publishing "poison" and informed that Hu Li's fans blamed her article for his death. She was promptly fired, with her editor stating that no media company would ever hire her again unless Hu Li miraculously returned to life.
Distraught and burdened by guilt, Ji Nian questioned if her article alone could have driven Hu Li to such an extreme, noting that he didn't seem like someone who would kill himself and had handled numerous controversies before. She tearfully confided in her friend Luo Li at Smile Cafe, lamenting her ruined career and the house mortgage she now couldn't pay. Luo Li offered comfort and support, promising to help with her debts.
Ji Nian was also subjected to severe online harassment, with people doxing her and calling for "justice for Hu Li." She recalled an incident at the awards ceremony where the lights flickered and went out just after Hu Li entered an elevator, but mysteriously, there were no news reports about an "elevator accident" involving him, deepening her suspicion that something more complex was at play.
One stormy night, as Ji Nian prayed for Hu Li to reappear, hoping to revive her career, he suddenly appeared at her doorstep, disoriented and wearing a hood. Mistaking him for a ghost, a terrified Ji Nian screamed. After he placed her on the sofa, Hu Li, holding her business card, asked if she knew "Ji Nian." Ji Nian, still panicked, denied being herself but then, in a fit of fear, bludgeoned him with a vase, knocking him unconscious.
She pondered if he was human or ghost, noticing his shadow. Shortly after, a man named Yang Zhe, identifying himself as Hu Li's friend, arrived at Ji Nian's door, revealing intimate knowledge of her life, including her recent dismissal. He explained that Hu Li, an AI idol created by Kewen Entertainment, had developed an irreparable flaw, leading the company to orchestrate his "suicide" to prevent exposure and manage potential losses.
Hu Li hadn't died but had lost his memory and, guided by Ji Nian's business card he held, had found his way to her home. Yang Zhe offered Ji Nian a substantial deposit and a contract: if she sheltered Hu Li and kept his survival a secret for two weeks, he would pay off all her debts. He stressed that Hu Li's spontaneous arrival at her home made her the most convincing person to him.
Under Yang Zhe's implied guidance, Ji Nian awkwardly attempted to weave an elaborate, romantic backstory. She tied Hu Li to a chair, gave him the pet name "Shi Tou," and declared herself his fiancée. She presented doctored photos as proof of their past, though Hu Li quickly spotted an extra hand in one. Her fabricated tale involved them meeting in college, her, the campus belle, falling for him, the "ordinary" student, after his prolonged courtship.
They then eloped and went into seclusion. Hu Li, though amnesiac, recognized the clichés, noting the story seemed lifted from old romances like that of Cui Yingying and Zhang Sheng. Ji Nian continued, claiming her mother had forcibly separated them, telling Hu Li she had died of a terminal illness. In his grief, Hu Li had supposedly jumped into the sea, only to miraculously return to her.
Internally, Hu Li found her story "cliched" and her acting "over-dramatic," but he decided to play along, half-believing and half-doubting, until he could figure out the truth. The two began living together. Later, Ji Nian's ex-boyfriend, Zhuo Yuan, visited, expressing concern over her job loss and attempting to reconcile. Ji Nian quickly dismissed him, insisting they were mere acquaintances.
After Zhuo Yuan left, Hu Li questioned their relationship, prompting Ji Nian to invent another cover story, claiming Zhuo Yuan was her mother's former student. When Hu Li questioned why her supposed "rich family" had a teacher, she amended it, saying her father was a wealthy businessman. Hu Li drily commented on how many hearts she seemed to have broken for him. Unbeknownst to Ji Nian, Kewen Entertainment was diligently covering up Hu Li's true nature.
Discussions between Mr. Zhou, the company chairman, and an assistant confirmed that all hotel CCTV footage of the "elevator accident" had been destroyed, witnesses (including Hu Li's assistant, Xiao Pang, who awoke believing it was a simple malfunction) silenced, and the incident dismissed as a simple malfunction. Yang Zhe, on a call with Mr. Zhou, assured him that Hu Li had been "handled" and promised to send a video as proof.
While Mr. Zhou acknowledged Yang Zhe's emotional attachment, he firmly reminded him that Hu Li was merely a machine with worsening electricity leakage. Revealing an AI idol to the public would ruin Kewen, making Hu Li's destruction the only viable option. Yang Zhe lamented that he had created and then "destroyed" someone who, to him, had become human, but Mr. Zhou reiterated that he could create many Hu Lis, but Kewen was unique.
One evening, while Hu Li was showering, the water supply cut off. He called out to Ji Nian, requesting her help to wash his hair as he didn't know how to do it himself. Feeling flustered by his bare appearance, Ji Nian reluctantly agreed. As she shampooed his hair, Hu Li teased her to use more force. An accidental splash of shampoo into his eyes led to Ji Nian's profuse apologies and attempts to rinse it out.
Wiping his eyes, Hu Li looked at Ji Nian and suddenly questioned, "Why? Why is it you? Who are you? Who am I? Why do I only remember your name, Ji Nian?" The name, "Ji Nian," seemed to echo with a hidden significance for him.
Episode 2 Recap
Ji Nian watched over Hu Li, urging him to maintain his amnesia and not fully awaken to reality. Hu Li, feeling hungry, asked Ji Nian to prepare him food. He mused that Ji Nian, despite claiming to be a rich girl, seemed to have forgotten her own story, calling it unprofessional.
As Ji Nian prepared to leave for work, she handed Hu Li an old mobile phone with her number saved in it, instructing him to contact her anytime he needed. She warned him that her "parents" were actively searching for them, so he must not leave the house and reveal his whereabouts. Hu Li understood, likening their situation to a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story.
Ji Nian admitted to having exaggerated their "love story" to impress upon him the seriousness of their predicament, though she maintained that their affection was "more genuine than diamonds," with only slightly exaggerated descriptions. She proposed they seek her parents' approval once they calmed down. Ji Nian then claimed their financial situation was dire, unable to afford internet or cable TV, apologizing that he would be bored at home.
Playing along, Hu Li assured her that his boredom was insignificant compared to her hardships. Before she left, Hu Li stopped her, requesting a "goodbye kiss" after their long separation. Ji Nian quickly dodged the advance, saying his body was still recovering and couldn't handle such intimacy, promising "next time." Alone in the house, Hu Li found everything unfamiliar. He wondered about his true identity, believing Ji Nian held the answers, and in turn, questioned who she really was.
Driven by this curiosity, he discreetly followed Ji Nian to her workplace, the Smile Cafe. There, Ji Nian's friend, Luo Li, mistook the masked Hu Li for a stalker and knocked him unconscious. Ji Nian tried to pacify a confused Luo Li, vaguely explaining that she would tell her everything later. She then confronted Hu Li for disobeying her instructions and following her, scolding him like a child.
Hu Li feigned fear and loneliness, claiming he only recognized her and felt miserable without her, even pointing to his minor injury from Luo Li as proof. He inwardly noted it was his turn to display his acting skills. Ji Nian grew frustrated, asking why he was suddenly acting cute, but Hu Li insisted he was genuinely expressing his feelings. He observed her increased heart rate, flushed eyes, and flushed ears, concluding she was embarrassed.
Ji Nian reiterated that his unauthorized outing could lead to her "parents" discovering them. Hu Li countered that being confined at home led to overthinking his identity and feeling useless while his "girlfriend" worked hard outside, questioning if he had always been a freeloader. He dramatically threatened to become depressed and commit suicide.
Ji Nian quickly urged him not to mention suicide and to promise to live on, to which Hu Li responded that he only wanted to be by her side. Suddenly, Song Mengmeng arrived at the cafe, calling for Ji Nian. Ji Nian told Hu Li to stay upstairs while she dealt with the "nuisance." Song Mengmeng gloated about her boyfriend, Brother Yuan, having tried to visit Ji Nian the previous day, only to be turned away.
She then sarcastically offered Ji Nian business, implying Ji Nian was jobless and dependent on the cafe. Song Mengmeng requested Ji Nian bake a cake for Brother Yuan's upcoming birthday, knowing Ji Nian knew his taste best. Ji Nian bluntly refused, stating her cakes were "not for ex-boyfriends and dogs." Song Mengmeng retorted that if she could "snatch him away," he was never truly Ji Nian's, and that it had been ages ago.
Hu Li, having come downstairs, stepped in, agreeing it had been "ages," and provocatively asked why Song Mengmeng and her "boyfriend" were still "haunting" Ji Nian. He challenged Song Mengmeng to introduce her "new boyfriend" who couldn't even show his face. Song Mengmeng, offended, flaunted a "royal brand from Belgium" handbag from Brother Yuan, asking if Ji Nian and Hu Li could afford to replace it if it was damaged.
Hu Li asserted his right as Ji Nian's boyfriend to "save his damsel in distress," then meticulously pointed out several flaws in the bag's leather, stitching, logo texture, and size, concluding it was a cheap, poorly made imitation and suggested she use it for grocery shopping. Humiliated, Song Mengmeng dismissed them as "crazy people" and left. Ji Nian scolded Hu Li for disobeying her, but he claimed he was worried she would be bullied.
Ji Nian relented and told him to go cook. Luo Li pulled Ji Nian aside, questioning if she was engaging in illegal activities to earn money quickly. Ji Nian vehemently denied it, admitting she had received some money but only to "temporarily look after him." She promised to explain everything once the situation was resolved. Luo Li expressed her concern, warning Ji Nian that she was "playing with fire."
Ji Nian, in turn, asked Luo Li to help her "keep an eye on him" when she wasn't around. Meanwhile, Bai Dongchen usurped Hu Li's villa and other assets, arranged by their company, after Hu Li's presumed death. Quietly returning to China, Zhou Yifei entered the villa, firmly believing Hu Li was still alive and determined to find him. She confronted Bai Dongchen, who was now living there, accusing him of exploiting Hu Li's disappearance for his own gain.
Despite Bai Dongchen's insistence that Hu Li was dead, Zhou Yifei refused to leave, proclaiming she would wait for Hu Li's return. Out of concern, Bai Dongchen allowed her to stay. Hu Li, realizing his charade was in jeopardy, understood he needed to secure a position at the cafe. He noticed a piano and despite Ji Nian's warnings that the owner, Fiona, would be furious if anyone touched it, he sat down and began to play.
Fiona, initially angered, quickly became deeply moved by the melody. She revealed that the song reminded her of her late husband, with whom she had fallen in love when he played that very piece. She had not heard it since his passing. Seizing the emotional moment, Hu Li fabricated a poignant tale of meeting his own "girlfriend" through the same song, her subsequent death from leukemia, and his inability to play it again until that day.
He apologized for stirring her painful memories. Ji Nian, observing, was impressed by his convincing acting. Fiona, genuinely touched, offered Hu Li a job at the cafe starting the next day, with the same salary and benefits as the other employees, stating he fit the cafe's atmosphere perfectly. Hu Li gratefully offered to play another song in thanks. He later realized his "superstar's brilliance" needed to be better concealed.
Ji Nian tried various disguises on him, including a Fiona-inspired wig (which he found "too dumb") and glasses. She insisted on the glasses, telling him not to stare at her or remove them, then went to trim his hair. Hu Li pondered Ji Nian's shyness and questioned the authenticity of their fabricated relationship, deciding to test her. Meanwhile, Ji Nian was in her room, calculating her debt, her average monthly income, and Hu Li's "remaining value" in their arrangement.
She made a phone call to her mother, reassuring her that she would repay the debts soon and pursue her dream of becoming an excellent reporter. Hu Li entered her room without knocking. He expressed appreciation for her hard work at the cafe, acknowledging the hardships she had endured. Despite his amnesia, he promised to work hard to earn money and open a larger cafe with her, making her the boss.
Ji Nian was confused by his sudden change in demeanor, wondering if he was ill. Hu Li then told her he only had her now, and suggested they "sleep together." Ji Nian immediately recoiled, insisting their relationship was based on "platonic love," pure and innocent, never crossing boundaries. Hu Li questioned if they didn't even share a goodnight kiss. Ji Nian vehemently refused, arguing that since he had amnesia, kissing him would be taking advantage of him and unfair.
Hu Li seemed to accept her reasoning, but then asked if they had always slept together. Panicked, Ji Nian quickly offered him the bed, saying she would sleep upstairs, and wished him goodnight as she hurried away. Hu Li noticed she had dropped a notebook. He picked it up, asking what it was. Ji Nian, flustered, called it her "budget planner." Hu Li, intrigued by its "mysterious" nature, teased her, asking if it contained her "longing for him." Ji Nian denied it, and they began to struggle playfully over the notebook. In their struggle, they accidentally fell onto the bed, their lips meeting in a surprise kiss.
Episode 3 Recap
The morning after their unexpected kiss, both Hu Li and Ji Nian felt embarrassed around each other. Ji Nian broke the silence, asking if Hu Li was hungry, and then offered to take him out for breakfast. Later, Hu Li eagerly pestered Ji Nian to take him along for her delivery rounds. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei was actively searching for Hu Li.
She spoke to her assistant, Fatty, thanking him for believing Hu Li was still alive and instructing him to get more influencers to repost her reward offer of 500,000 for information on Hu Li. Later, Zhou Yifei met with Bai Dongchen, who questioned her impulsive decision to offer such a large reward. He warned her not to do anything she would regret, especially since her father, Zhou Hongwei, might discover she was back.
Zhou Yifei dismissed his concerns, stating she would bear all consequences as long as Hu Li returned. Bai Dongchen, however, let Zhou Yifei continue, thinking she would eventually give up after enough trouble. Back at the cafe, Hu Li was officially welcomed as "Little Stone" by Fiona, who gave him a specially chosen apron. Hu Li was eager to help with work, but Luo Li jokingly told him to sweep up the confetti from his welcoming celebration.
Bai Dongchen, concerned about recent events, tasked his assistant to monitor Yang Zhe, who had been secluded in his lab, heavily impacted by Hu Li's disappearance. Bai Dongchen also instructed his assistant to investigate Zhou Yifei's financial and travel records and to freeze her bank card, suspecting she had returned to the country. He then visited Yang Zhe, pressing him on why he placed Hu Li with Ji Nian.
Yang Zhe revealed that Ji Nian was Zhou Hongwei's daughter and that the only way to save Hu Li was for him and Ji Nian to fall in love. Yang Zhe insisted it wasn't a gamble but a necessity, confident they would fall in love. Later, Ji Nian took Hu Li out to deliver orders. She strictly warned him to stay by the motorcycle, not to stray more than three meters, and to keep his helmet on.
However, Hu Li, still disoriented by his amnesia and the new world, heard familiar music playing nearby and was irresistibly drawn to it. He wandered off to watch a street performance. The performers tried to get him to remove his helmet, scaring him, and he ran away, feeling overwhelmed and lost in the unfamiliar city. Ji Nian, returning to find him gone, frantically searched for "Little Stone."
She eventually found him, and Hu Li, clinging to her, tearfully confessed his fear of being alone and losing her, declaring that she was the only one he remembered in his world. Ji Nian embraced him, promising not to leave him. Upon their return to the cafe, they unexpectedly encountered Bai Dongchen. Ji Nian, in a panic, quickly ushered Hu Li upstairs to hide him.
Bai Dongchen greeted Ji Nian, surprising her by knowing her name and past as a patissier and an intern reporter who was fired because of Hu Li. He claimed to be there to order desserts for a housewarming party, but then subtly mentioned the 500,000 reward for Hu Li's whereabouts, implicitly testing Ji Nian's loyalty and probing whether she would reveal Hu Li for money. Ji Nian, though visibly nervous, feigned ignorance, assuring him she would prepare the desserts.
After Bai Dongchen left, Ji Nian considered him dangerous and resolved to prevent him from having any contact with Hu Li. Upstairs, Hu Li, having witnessed the encounter, questioned Ji Nian about her nervousness around Bai Dongchen. He shared that his amnesia had allowed him to rediscover himself and her. Later that night, Hu Li went to Ji Nian's room, telling her about strange flashing lights and images of him dancing on a stage to cheering crowds.
Ji Nian quickly fabricated a story, telling him he once dreamed of being a star but gave it up because her family wouldn't approve of her dating a celebrity, and he loved her enough to sacrifice his dream. Hu Li, attempting to reclaim his room, asked if Ji Nian could fold paper cranes. She obliged, but her efforts were in vain as she still refused to give him back the room.
The next morning, Hu Li, eager to please, woke up early to go to the cafe and left a decent breakfast for Ji Nian. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei, frustrated by her stopped bank card, confronted Bai Dongchen, accusing him of snitching. Bai Dongchen explained that her online activities, especially involving Fatty, made it easy for her father to track her. He then suggested she raise money from Hu Li's fans. Soon after, Zhou Yifei received an online tip about Hu Li.
While on the phone with Bai Dongchen, she saw a video of someone resembling Hu Li, wearing a helmet and being pulled to dance, which also showed a cafe sign. She immediately set off to confirm the lead at the Smile Cafe, despite Bai Dongchen's warning that the online clues might be fake. As she approached the cafe, she heard Hu Li's piano music drifting out, drawing her closer. At the cafe, Hu Li was teaching Fiona how to play the piano.
Episode 4 Recap
Ji Nian received an urgent call, learning that police were at her cafe investigating a case related to Hu Li. Anxious that "Shi Tou" (Hu Li) might be implicated, she frantically instructed the caller to keep him hidden. Rushing to the cafe, Ji Nian encountered Bai Dongchen, who informed her that a woman, Zhou Yifei, had just been taken away for illegal fundraising.
Bai Dongchen, having deliberately misled Zhou Yifei into establishing a foundation to search for Hu Li, had then reported her. Later, speaking on the phone from the police station, Bai Dongchen confirmed that Zhou Yifei's interrogation was concluding, deeming the experience a necessary lesson for her. Upon her release, Zhou Yifei confronted Bai Dongchen, accusing him of despicable manipulation and jealousy towards Hu Li, asserting he could never replace the idol.
Bai Dongchen, unfazed, simply told his assistant to take her home. Back at the cafe, Ji Nian angrily confronted Hu Li for going out alone, accusing him of breaking his promise. Hu Li tried to explain, and Fiona intervened, revealing that Hu Li was diligently teaching her piano as part of a new paid arrangement. This made Ji Nian realize her mistake.
Observing Ji Nian's lingering distress, Luo Li pulled her aside and pressed her about her obvious concern for "Shi Tou." After some hesitation, Ji Nian confessed that "Shi Tou" was none other than the famous star Hu Li, urging Luo Li to remain calm. Luo Li was utterly shocked, questioning Ji Nian's reckless decisions to bring Hu Li to work and on deliveries, pointing out that while Ji Nian herself was face-blind, everyone else would easily recognize the celebrity.
Overwhelmed, Ji Nian worried about the severe consequences and Hu Li's potential reaction if he were to discover the truth. Luo Li, after a moment of thought, advised Ji Nian to treat Hu Li with extreme kindness, believing it was the only way to safeguard herself, hoping he would remember her good deeds.
Moved by Hu Li's revelation that he was teaching piano specifically to earn money to take her to an amusement park, Ji Nian agreed to go, deciding on a later time to avoid crowds. Luo Li, however, reiterated her warning, cautioning Ji Nian to be exceptionally benevolent towards Hu Li, fearing she might be blacklisted by the entertainment industry if he regained his celebrity status and recalled her actions.
That evening, with the amusement park empty, Ji Nian playfully made Hu Li wear a cute headband, and they captured several cheerful photos. When they found the carousel was shut down, Hu Li surprised Ji Nian by secretly arranging for it to start, much to her delight.
He revealed his desire to ride it was because he believed she would enjoy it, recalling how his mother used to take him on carousels for his birthdays, wishing he would grow up quickly. He, however, had longed to remain a child, fearing his mother would age and leave him. Hu Li then promised to accompany Ji Nian to the carousel every year.
As he took a photo of her, fleeting images of Ji Nian as a child on the carousel flashed through his mind, leaving him bewildered by these unexplainable memories. Despite feeling deeply touched by Hu Li's past and his promise, Ji Nian was reminded by Luo Li to treat their arrangement as a business transaction and maintain emotional distance, which Ji Nian agreed to do.
Meanwhile, the crisis surrounding Zhou Yifei's arrest prompted Bai Dongchen to express doubts to Yang Zhe about placing Hu Li with Ji Nian, given Ji Nian's perceived lack of foresight. However, Yang Zhe remained confident, suggesting that Ji Nian's willingness to take risks for Hu Li indicated she no longer saw him merely as a business transaction.
Bai Dongchen questioned if Ji Nian would truly accept a relationship with an artificial intelligence, to which Yang Zhe cryptically replied that "anything is possible," maintaining his belief that Ji Nian would eventually fall for Hu Li. The next morning, Hu Li proudly showed Ji Nian her scooter, which he had meticulously cleaned, along with her helmet, expecting her joy.
However, Ji Nian, intent on creating emotional boundaries, hastily departed for her delivery duties alone, instructing Hu Li to stay put at the cafe. Later, Ji Nian delivered a takeout order to a luxurious villa, where she was met by Bai Dongchen. He revealed that the extravagant residence was Hu Li's former home, which the company had reclaimed after his disappearance, prompting Bai Dongchen to throw a party to dispel any bad luck.
Ji Nian was inwardly struck by the contrast between Hu Li's past opulence and his current humble living situation with her, pondering who he might have upset. Bai Dongchen also casually mentioned that the company had given up searching for Hu Li, implying that those who disappear are quickly forgotten, and noted that Zhou Yifei had only received a minor reprimand for her fundraising attempts. Soon after, Fatty, Hu Li's former assistant, arrived to collect Hu Li's belongings.
Upon learning that many items were destined for disposal due to Fatty's lack of storage space, Ji Nian, claiming her friend was a fan, requested Hu Li's helmet as a keepsake. Fatty, acknowledging Hu Li's passion for motorcycles and helmet collecting, gladly gave it to her. Ji Nian then offered to help donate the remaining items to charity, suggesting Fatty mail them to her address, to which he gratefully agreed.
Back at the cafe, Hu Li asked Luo Li for a tarot reading. Drawing the "Wheel of Fortune" card, Luo Li inferred that his past contained a sudden halt in his life due to a "fatal disaster," indicating he was a man with a mysterious history. Hu Li, though, dismissed the suggestion. He then sought insight into his relationship with Ji Nian, puzzled by her recent alternating displays of passion and aloofness.
Luo Li, who had already deduced their cohabitation by their similar scent, explained that Ji Nian was holding back because Hu Li still needed to find "an opportunity to make her feel moved" to fully win her over. Later, Hu Li patiently waited for Ji Nian's return, surprising her with a homemade bento box—his very first attempt at cooking.
Ji Nian was deeply touched, remarking that it had been a long time since anyone had waited for her in such a thoughtful way. After praising his cooking, Hu Li, delighted, offered to prepare meals for her every day. Ji Nian, however, responded by saying their current situation was temporary, and he would soon return to his celebrity life and luxurious home, forgetting everything. As Hu Li fell silent, Ji Nian presented him with the helmet she had acquired earlier.
Overjoyed, Hu Li put on the helmet and gleefully rode her scooter. Suddenly, a jolt of fragmented memories—a dark, chaotic scene, a voice shouting his name, and the sound of a crash—overwhelmed him, causing him to lose control and fall off the scooter. Ji Nian, witnessing the accident, screamed and burst into tears. Hu Li, recovering on the ground, immediately reassured her, promising he would never leave her again.
Episode 5 Recap
After Ji Nian accidentally electrocuted him, she found Hu Li lying unconscious. Believing him to be severely injured or even dead, she cried out in fear. Hu Li soon woke up, completely unharmed, explaining that he had tried to cook, but upon touching the gas stove, he felt a powerful electric current, saw some images flash in his mind, and then fainted.
He mentioned a name, "Hu Li," which Ji Nian quickly deflected, attributing it to his desire for a pet fox. Shocked by his rapid recovery, Ji Nian realized he truly possessed self-healing abilities. Later, when Hu Li went to take a shower, Ji Nian heard him shout and, concerned he was being electrocuted again, rushed to check on him, only to be playfully teased by Hu Li for her overreaction.
Ji Nian called Yang Zhe, recounting Hu Li’s sudden fainting and the electric current she witnessed. Yang Zhe admitted that Kewen Entertainment was trying to kill Hu Li because he was an artificial intelligence. He warned Ji Nian not to let Zhou Hongwei know Hu Li was alive, as Zhou Hongwei would spare no effort to eliminate him.
Crucially, Hu Li himself must also remain ignorant of his true nature, as losing the will to survive could cause an AI to cease functioning. Ji Nian was deeply shocked by this revelation. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei unexpectedly arrived at Bai Dongchen’s home, upset and accusing him of being happy about Hu Li’s disappearance. She quickly clarified that her recent actions were part of an investigation into Hu Li.
She explained that the person working at the cafe, despite resembling Hu Li in stature, was a "fool" with no other similarities, confirming it wasn't him. Zhou Yifei decided to stop her search, acknowledging that Hu Li would not want her to continue acting so irrationally.
In a flashback, Hu Li had once rejected Zhou Yifei's advances, stating he didn't like her and advising her not to let chasing stars interfere with her studies, despite her emphasizing her father Zhou Hongwei's influence and her determination to win his affection. Now, Zhou Yifei declared her unwavering love for Hu Li, vowing to make him love her. Armed with the truth about Hu Li, Ji Nian felt a profound sense of responsibility and guilt.
She decided to be kinder to him, taking time off work to care for him. She cooked his favorite dishes, meticulously preparing a feast of beef, asparagus, dumplings, and omelet rice. Hu Li was delighted, believing his "bento offensive" was finally melting her heart, and affectionately nicknamed her "Man Tou." However, Ji Nian struggled with her growing feelings, reminding herself that he was merely an artificial intelligence.
Driven by curiosity about how an AI might "recharge," she secretly entered his room later that night. Hu Li, who was only pretending to be asleep, caught her searching. He misinterpreted her actions as a romantic gesture, expressing his feeling of their love despite his memory loss. Ji Nian, flustered, tried to inform him about her upcoming commitment to deliver desserts to Song Mengmeng, but Hu Li was more focused on their supposed intimacy.
The next day, Song Mengmeng visited Ji Nian’s cafe. Luo Li, working behind the counter, recognized Song Mengmeng by her strong perfume and exchanged sharp remarks with her. Luo Li revealed that Hu Li, despite his apparent wealth, was working at the cafe solely to pursue Ji Nian.
Song Mengmeng, dismissing this information, then threatened Luo Li to relay a message to Ji Nian: if the dessert wasn't delivered to her birthday party, she would expose Ji Nian's home and shop addresses, along with photos, to ruin her reputation as an "unscrupulous reporter." Later, Ji Nian arrived at Song Mengmeng’s birthday party alone with the cake.
She was immediately confronted and insulted by Song Mengmeng and her friends, who accused her of seducing boyfriends and being a "wicked reporter." They forced her to taste the cake to "prove" it wasn't tampered with. In a calculated move, one of Song Mengmeng's friends "accidentally" spilled cake onto Song Mengmeng's dress, blaming Ji Nian. Just as Ji Nian was about to be overwhelmed, Hu Li burst in, disguised in a large mascot costume.
He bravely defended Ji Nian, and together they stood up against the bullies. As they quickly left the party, Ji Nian worried about Hu Li being recognized, but he reassured her, pointing out his mask offered concealment. They found a secluded spot, and Hu Li briefly removed his heavy headgear for a breath of fresh air, sharing a tender moment with Ji Nian. Back at the cafe, Fiona and Luo Li had prepared a surprise birthday party for Ji Nian.
They presented her with a beautiful dress and crystal shoes, making her feel like a true princess. Hu Li, deeply moved by Ji Nian in her elegant attire, asked her for a dance. Though hesitant because she didn't know how, Ji Nian accepted, and Hu Li gracefully led her. The evening was magical, like a fairy tale coming true. As Ji Nian became intoxicated, Hu Li carried her home. In her drunken state, she leaned in and kissed him, blurring the lines between her carefully constructed reality and the enchanting dream he had created for her.
Episode 6 Recap
Hu Li carried a tipsy Ji Nian home after her birthday celebration. Ji Nian, while intoxicated, spoke about missing her mother, and Hu Li promised to be her family, assuring her she wouldn't be alone. She expressed a fear that he would eventually hate her if he discovered she lied, but Hu Li playfully dismissed the idea, stating that white lies, if well-intentioned, were acceptable. He then presented her with a camera as a birthday gift.
Overjoyed, Ji Nian impulsively leaned in and kissed him. The next morning, Ji Nian awoke to find Hu Li sleeping beside her. Embarrassed, she quickly got up to make breakfast, pretending not to remember anything from the night before when Hu Li teased her about it. Later, at Ji Nian's cafe, Bai Dongchen offered to deliver some of Hu Li's belongings that were being sent from another location.
He casually brought a specific helmet, telling Ji Nian it was Hu Li's favorite, signaling his awareness of Hu Li's identity. Ji Nian quickly hid Hu Li inside, instructing him not to come out. Suspicious and wanting to understand Bai Dongchen's motives, Ji Nian agreed to meet him for lunch. During their meal, Bai Dongchen revealed that Yang Zhe had informed him about Hu Li's situation.
He proposed an alliance, hinting at Hu Li's past suicide attempt and suggesting they work together to manage the situation. While Ji Nian was wary, she felt she had no choice but to cooperate. Bai Dongchen pressed her to ensure Hu Li would trust him. Meanwhile, Hu Li felt increasingly unsettled by Ji Nian's frequent interactions with Bai Dongchen. Recalling a past instance of Bai Dongchen signing autographs, Hu Li secretly took Ji Nian's phone and searched for Bai Dongchen.
He discovered Bai Dongchen was a prominent celebrity, which then led him to search for himself, revealing his true identity as Hu Li. He was deeply confused and angered by Ji Nian's elaborate deception and her reasons for hiding his past. The following morning, Hu Li hummed one of his own songs while making breakfast, and Ji Nian immediately recognized it, growing visibly nervous.
Hu Li presented her with a double-yolk egg, cryptically mentioning "Double Yolk best actor," and suggested that having both Bai Dongchen and her present might help him regain his memories. Ji Nian tried to deflect, citing Bai Dongchen's busy schedule and the risk of exposure, but Hu Li insisted, asking if she didn't want him to recover. Feeling pressured, Ji Nian reluctantly called Bai Dongchen and arranged a boxing session.
At the boxing gym, Hu Li confronted Bai Dongchen, knocking him down in the ring and declaring his perennial superiority. He then demanded to know Bai Dongchen's true intentions and what he and Ji Nian were plotting. Bai Dongchen, evasive, claimed he was merely "curious" about Hu Li's situation and later asserted he found it "fun" to see the "superstar Hu Li in trouble."
He redirected Hu Li's questions, advising him to focus on his past suicide attempt and depression, and to ask Ji Nian about her secrets. He further taunted Hu Li, suggesting that no one remembered him and his return wouldn't affect Bai Dongchen's status. As the two men talked, Luo Li, who had been eavesdropping, appeared and maliciously advised Hu Li to leave Ji Nian, portraying her as manipulative and self-serving. Ji Nian quickly intervened, stopping Luo Li.
Seeing that Hu Li now knew the truth, Ji Nian rushed to explain. While desperate to explain, she consciously withheld details about her transaction with Yang Zhe, fearing Hu Li's reaction. Bai Dongchen confirmed that Hu Li was aware of everything: his own identity, Bai Dongchen's identity, Hu Li's depression, and Ji Nian's lies. He warned Ji Nian that Hu Li still couldn't be exposed and that only she could keep him safe.
Hu Li, feeling betrayed, walked away, returning the helmet Ji Nian had found. Ji Nian followed him, desperate to explain. She confessed that after news of his suicide due to depression, she feared for his happiness and safety, unsure if he even wanted to return to his old life. She admitted her guilt over having contributed to his past negative publicity, which led her to keep him hidden.
Hu Li, though still angry about the deception, revealed that he had known she was lying from the beginning but chose to stay. He confessed that his memory loss felt like a second chance to start anew, away from the spotlight. He didn't want apologies; he simply didn't want her to leave, admitting that he liked her. He then asked Ji Nian if she liked him, independently of all the lies. As he spoke, Hu Li leaned in and kissed her.
Episode 7 Recap
Hu Li confessed his love to Ji Nian, asking if she liked him despite the lies. Ji Nian, calling herself a liar and unworthy, was quickly reassured by Hu Li that she was indeed worthy. Hu Li playfully acknowledged that he knew Ji Nian's "acting" about the broken television was fake, admitting he wanted to discover Ji Nian's true self and understand his own identity through her. He declared himself "an ordinary Shi Tou" and Ji Nian "the shining Mantou."
When Ji Nian tried to reverse their roles, stating he was "the shining Hu Li" and she "the ordinary Ji Nian," Hu Li playfully questioned why she had become so timid. Later, Ji Nian suggested Hu Li rest at home, but he perceived it as her trying to dismiss him.
He asked her to stop being indecisive and to embark on a fresh start together, reminding her he preferred to be called Shi Tou, her personal "Shi Tou," not the superstar Hu Li. Ji Nian, however, insisted he would eventually return to the stage before leaving to meet Luo Li, leaving Hu Li confused about her avoidance. Ji Nian confided in Luo Li that Shi Tou had regained his memory and confessed his feelings for her.
She grappled with the dilemma of whether to reveal that she initially took money to look after him. Luo Li emphatically advised against telling him, fearing it would devastate their budding relationship. She suggested either letting the secret vanish discreetly or waiting until the right time, then simply enjoying this unexpected love. Ji Nian was left pondering whether she was enjoying a relationship with a superstar or merely an AI.
Hu Li soon confronted Ji Nian about her distant behavior, and she admitted she was still adjusting. He reiterated that he was just "Shi Tou," not the celebrity Hu Li, and urged her not to feel pressured. As Ji Nian began to reveal something, her editor called, inviting her back to work at the magazine. Excited, Ji Nian left immediately, with Hu Li cheering her on.
Unbeknownst to Ji Nian, Hu Li had earlier contacted Bai Dongchen, pressuring him to help Ji Nian get her job back at You Hu Entertainment. Hu Li threatened to reveal his survival if Bai Dongchen didn't assist, emphasizing his desire to remain "an unobstructive Shi Tou." Bai Dongchen reluctantly agreed, making Hu Li indebted to him, all for Ji Nian's happiness.
The editor later informed Ji Nian that Bai Dongchen had specifically requested her for an exclusive interview, leaving Ji Nian to wonder if he was plotting something. Ji Nian was further distressed when Zhuo Yuan approached her, trying to coerce her into meeting him at a bar. He claimed to have stopped Song Meng Meng from exposing Ji Nian's identity to Hu Li's fans, then threatened to reveal Ji Nian's home and workplace if she refused.
Ji Nian warned him she would call the police. Bai Dongchen, who was at the closed cafe, spoke with Ji Nian. She expressed her worries about Zhuo Yuan's threats to expose her identity and the potential danger to Hu Li. He promised to deal with Zhuo Yuan. Meanwhile, Ji Nian found Hu Li casually playing cards with some older women at the cafe, oblivious to the threats looming over them.
She angrily chastised him for his apparent lack of awareness, leading him to quickly stop playing. Luo Li later revealed to a guilt-ridden Ji Nian that Hu Li had taken a three-month salary advance from Fiona just to buy her a birthday gift, explaining why he was so busy at the cafe. This revelation deepened Ji Nian's remorse for her harshness. Later that night, Hu Li and Bai Dongchen, dressed elaborately in drag, went to the bar.
Zhuo Yuan, mistaking Hu Li for a woman, tried to flirt, only to be shocked when Hu Li revealed his male voice. Ji Nian, who was at the cafe with Luo Li, soon learned about the humorous prank. Hu Li and Bai Dongchen, still in their costumes, arrived at the cafe, and Ji Nian, amused and touched by their efforts, admitted her previous harshness was wrong.
Bai Dongchen assured her that neither Song Meng Meng nor Zhuo Yuan would bother her again. Hu Li, feeling victorious, then asked for a reward, but Ji Nian, still conflicted, asked him not to do dangerous things and to leave her alone for a while. Hu Li, dejected by Ji Nian's continued emotional distance, confided in Bai Dongchen at the cafe, expressing his confusion about her hot-and-cold behavior.
Bai Dongchen suggested Ji Nian might simply be shy because their relationship had become real, but Hu Li sensed a deeper, hidden reason. Back at home, Hu Li entered Ji Nian's room without knocking and found something unexpected. Ji Nian, meanwhile, was filled with guilt, reflecting on Hu Li's kindness despite her deceptive secret. She decided to make him a cake as an apology, but struggled to formulate a confession that wouldn't provoke his anger or sound overly melodramatic. As Ji Nian returned home with the finished cake, ready to apologize, she found Hu Li holding and looking at her contract with Yang Zhe.
Episode 8 Recap
Hu Li furiously confronted Ji Nian after discovering her deception. He demanded an explanation, but Ji Nian, distraught, locked him in the room to calm down, while she frantically called Bai Dongchen for help. From behind the closed door, Hu Li pressed her, questioning if all her affectionate gestures, from their fabricated love story to her claim of being his fan, were solely for the RMB500,000.
Ji Nian initially denied it, then admitted it was a "measure of expediency" to keep him safe. Hu Li remained unconvinced, accusing her of being "rotten" for cozying up to him for money. When he asked if she ever had genuine feelings, Ji Nian, through tears and defiance, declared that it was all an act for the money and she had "never liked him." Hu Li called her incorrigible. Soon after, Bai Dongchen arrived with Fatty.
Fatty attempted to restore Hu Li's trust by showing him photos and videos from his phone, but Hu Li dismissed them as easily faked. Fatty then presented five detailed diaries, one for each year he had worked for Hu Li, filled with entries and illustrations. These personal records finally convinced Hu Li, who declared he would now trust Fatty alone. Hu Li then inquired about Yang Zhe.
Fatty explained that Yang Zhe had collaborated with their company but wasn't close to Hu Li privately, and he didn't know why Yang Zhe had hired Ji Nian to "protect" Hu Li. Hu Li corrected him, stating it was "house arrest," not "protection," and questioned why Yang Zhe hadn't informed him directly. Ji Nian then interjected, stating that Yang Zhe merely paid her, claiming Hu Li was dangerous and the less she knew, the better.
Feeling betrayed, Hu Li accused Ji Nian of exploiting his feelings for financial gain. Hu Li, wanting to leave, was stopped by Ji Nian. She argued that she had promised Yang Zhe to house him and feared losing her payment if he left before she received it. She threatened to leak his secrets if he abandoned her. Angered but resigned, Hu Li agreed to stay but defiantly told her to "know her place."
Bai Dongchen later instructed Fatty to keep the situation a secret, especially from Chief Zhou, emphasizing that Hu Li's current location with Ji Nian was the safest. Hu Li then began tormenting Ji Nian, treating her as his personal servant.
He made her prepare specific meals and, one night, ordered RMB2,999 worth of seafood takeout, making her pay and then demanding she peel all the shellfish for him before he would eat, telling her to wake him when she was finished. Ji Nian, seething, complied. The next morning, Ji Nian was abruptly woken by a team of cleaners Hu Li had hired for a weekly deep-cleaning service, which she was also forced to pay for.
Hu Li lectured her on time and financial management. He then ordered a new, top-of-the-line smartphone, which cost RMB19,800, and once again, made Ji Nian pay upon delivery. Ji Nian vented her frustrations to Luo Li about Hu Li's outrageous behavior. Later, Bai Dongchen called Ji Nian, offering to let Hu Li stay at his villa to alleviate her burden.
Ji Nian refused, explaining she feared "losing both the person and the money" if she handed him over, indicating her continued obligation for the payment. At her coffee shop, Ji Nian was startled when a delivery person arrived, demanding RMB380 for takeout that Hu Li had ordered to her address. While delivering the food to Hu Li, she inadvertently overheard him telling Fatty that he never liked her and was merely playing along to expose a "gold-digger."
Heartbroken and enraged by his words, Ji Nian confronted Hu Li, accusing him of being afraid of "losing money," and then defiantly kicked his beloved motorcycle. Hu Li was momentarily stunned but retorted that he wasn't even angry, questioning why she had the right to be. Ji Nian then spat on his motorcycle, before storming off. Hu Li realized he had truly angered her but stubbornly refused to apologize, instead suggesting they resume their game.
That evening, Ji Nian did not return home. Hu Li, growing worried, tried calling her, but her phone was off. He then checked the coffee shop and found a note from Luo Li, directing him to a KTV. At the KTV, Ji Nian was already tipsy, singing a sorrowful song with Luo Li.
Luo Li suggested that Ji Nian's anger indicated she still cared for Hu Li, but Ji Nian vehemently denied it, claiming she was merely upset by his accusations. She expressed deep confusion and hurt, questioning if Hu Li's past affections were merely an act and if he harbored no genuine feelings for her. Hu Li entered the room, and Luo Li, sensing the tension, quickly excused herself.
Hu Li tried to take Ji Nian home, but she resisted, challenging his right to control her and sarcastically asking if he was "acting as a big bully president who's fallen in love" with her. She declared she didn't want to go home to be "bullied and hated." Hu Li, finally acknowledging his fault, apologized and retracted his harsh words. However, Ji Nian was still deeply wounded, stating it was too late.
She reiterated that she had not betrayed him and was not an actress capable of faking feelings. She concluded that they were fundamentally incompatible, and once he was gone, she would no longer worry about being implicated, nor would he fear being lied to. Despite her continued resistance, Hu Li gently picked her up and carried her out of the KTV.
Episode 9 Recap
Hu Li carried Ji Nian out of the KTV, but she struggled, demanding he let her go and threatening to call the police. Hu Li questioned what she would tell them. Ji Nian called him a lunatic and declared their deal canceled, giving him one night to pack and telling Fatty to take him home. Hu Li protested, accusing her of chasing him away despite his wrongdoing. Ji Nian admitted her deception and offered a full refund.
When Hu Li tried to calm her, she insisted she meant it, urging him to stop following her. Hu Li refused to let her go, leading to another struggle where Ji Nian accidentally fell and hurt her leg. Hu Li picked her up again, only for her to tell him to "buzz off." Ji Nian then exaggerated her injury, wrapping her leg elaborately. Hu Li felt guilty.
Hu Li discussed his situation with Fatty over the phone, explaining Ji Nian's injury was his fault and he felt obligated to take care of her. He described Ji Nian as "ill-tempered, unpopular, and stingy," unable to afford a caretaker, so he would "sacrifice a bit" and look after her "for a while." Ji Nian, sensing Hu Li's guilt, insisted she didn't need his favors, to which Hu Li retorted he was staying to prevent future accusations.
Ji Nian suspected he simply had nowhere else to go. She proposed he stay if he paid rent. Hu Li balked at the idea of renting from her, but Ji Nian threatened to reveal his identity. Fatty intervened, reminding Ji Nian of Hu Li's special status, and Ji Nian agreed to let them stay without discount but would provide a final price.
Ji Nian then inflated the rent, starting with 5,000 yuan, adding another 5,000 for Hu Li's "special status, troublesome and picky" nature, and an additional 5,000 for his "criticizing and wasting stuff." Fatty frantically protested, claiming he couldn't afford it even if he sold himself. Ji Nian finally settled, telling Fatty to work hard.
She then told Hu Li that since she couldn't guarantee Fatty's payments, Hu Li would have to work for her in the house to offset the rent. Hu Li accepted, challenging her to admit her true feelings. That night, Ji Nian woke Hu Li at 3:30 AM, ordering him to move out of the master bedroom and remove all his belongings. Despite his complaints about the late hour, Ji Nian reminded him of a past incident involving similar timing.
Ji Nian demanded he make the bed for her because she was "injured," then Hu Li moved his belongings to the side room. Reflecting on the situation, Hu Li found women "unpredictable," wondering if Ji Nian's actions were a tactic to make him stay because she actually liked him. Later, busy until late at night, a groggy Hu Li unconsciously entered the master bedroom and fell asleep beside Ji Nian.
The next morning, a startled Ji Nian kicked him out of bed, inadvertently revealing that her leg injury was fake. Hu Li then pinned Ji Nian to the bed, pressing her to admit she was reluctant for him to leave, but Ji Nian stubbornly denied it and managed to escape. The next morning, Ji Nian criticized the simple breakfast, wishing for more nutritious options. Hu Li brought her milk and offered to cook eggs, promising to improve his culinary skills.
She then lamented about her unwashed clothes, claiming her "money-crazy" nature prevented her from affording dry cleaning. Hu Li offered to wash them. Next, she complained about the messy house, explaining she canceled the cleaner for being "money-crazy." Hu Li readily agreed to serve as her cleaner. Ji Nian then deliberately scattered pistachio and sunflower seed shells on the floor, making him constantly clean up after her.
Later, Bai Dong Chen visited Ji Nian, bringing a variety of nuts still in their shells. As Ji Nian and Bai Dong Chen cheerfully cracked nuts, Hu Li was pressed into service as a human antenna to fix the TV signal for them. Bai Dong Chen remarked that a chubby-faced character on TV resembled Ji Nian, comparing her face to a "bun."
Hu Li, whose nickname is also Man Tou, felt insulted and declared he would "ruin" both Bai Dong Chen and Ji Nian once he returned to stardom. Later, Hu Li called Bai Dong Chen, claiming he was enjoying his "life experience" and that Ji Nian was actually kind to him when no one else was around.
He boasted that Ji Nian liked him so much she had confessed and begged him to stay, even cleaning the toilet, and that he had already forgiven her. Bai Dong Chen seemed skeptical but wished him good luck. At the cafe, Luo Li, admiring a tarot card, anticipated romantic love. Fatty entered the cafe, immediately captivating Luo Li.
Fatty presented Ji Nian with autographed photos of Hu Li, emphasizing their future value, and urged her to treat Hu Li better, hinting that "there's not much time left." Ji Nian agreed to be kinder, much to Fatty's delight. Ji Nian then rehearsed various ways to make up with Hu Li. Ji Nian then received a call from Yang Zhe. She hurriedly informed him that both Bai Dong Chen and Hu Li himself now knew his true identity.
Yang Zhe confirmed he was already aware, thanked her for caring for Hu Li, and stated he was taking Hu Li away early. He added that the remaining payment had been transferred to her account before hanging up abruptly. Ji Nian was stunned. Meanwhile, Yang Zhe was discussing the situation with Bai Dong Chen. Yang Zhe stated he had to take Hu Li away and that Mr. Zhou had no choice but to agree.
Bai Dong Chen expressed surprise, and Yang Zhe cautioned him that Mr. Zhou was investigating Ji Nian, advising him not to get too close. Bai Dong Chen dismissed the warning, claiming he was more important to Mr. Zhou than Hu Li or Yang Zhe. He then questioned Yang Zhe's contradictory actions, setting up Hu Li with Ji Nian only to take him away.
Yang Zhe explained that Ji Nian could only offer temporary protection and that Mr. Zhou would never truly let Hu Li go, urging Bai Dong Chen to expedite the process. Seeing the deposit notification on her phone, Ji Nian rushed home from the cafe. She found Hu Li with Yang Zhe, preparing to leave. Ji Nian asked if he was truly going, and Hu Li confirmed it, asking if she would miss him, which she denied.
She inquired about his belongings, and he casually suggested she pack them for him to pick up later. Yang Zhe offered to mail them instead. Ji Nian asked if he was so unwilling to see her again. Hu Li replied that they didn't need to meet, stating they were "going to be on different paths now," and there was "no point in talking so much."
Ji Nian agreed, adding that as he would become a superstar, talking to "someone like me is kind of pointless." She promised not to disclose his stay or trouble him further, proposing they "just go our separate ways" and "pretend that we don't know each other" if they ever met again. Hu Li agreed to her terms.
Episode 10 Recap
Ji Nian rushed home, only to encounter Hu Li who was preparing to leave with Bai Dongchen. Hu Li subtly hoped for Ji Nian to ask him to stay, but Ji Nian, feigning indifference, stated they were not meant to be together and should go their separate ways. Disappointed, Hu Li left with Bai Dongchen. Alone, Ji Nian tried to mask her sadness by frantically eating snacks, declaring that the entire house and all the treats were now hers.
She packed all of Hu Li's belongings and placed them in the yard. Meanwhile, Bai Dongchen informed Hu Li that Zhou Hongwei was the one who wanted him dead. Hu Li was shocked and disbelieving, unable to reconcile this with Zhou Hongwei's support of Bai Dongchen. Hu Li questioned Bai Dongchen about his connection to Yang Zhe and why he kept Hu Li's survival a secret from Zhou Hongwei.
Bai Dongchen admitted he didn't want Hu Li to return to the spotlight, as the company was currently promoting him. Hu Li, realizing Bai Dongchen's prior "accidental" encounters were deliberate, then learned from Bai Dongchen that Yang Zhe's plans had changed, and he needed to return to Ji Nian's house. However, Hu Li, still prideful, insisted he would only go back if Ji Nian begged him, certain she would call him.
Ji Nian, at the cafe, was making cakes for a customer, appearing lost in thought. Luo Li, noticing her distress, asked if she had reconciled with Shi Tou (Hu Li's nickname). Ji Nian stated he had left and would not return, but quickly insisted she was happy to be rid of the trouble. She denied any sadness, claiming she was relieved. Hu Li, waiting for Ji Nian to contact him, instructed Fatty via phone to monitor her.
Fatty visited the cafe and reported to Hu Li (also via phone) that Ji Nian seemed perfectly fine, thriving with her business and happy every day. Fatty later mistakenly believed a male client, who was asking Ji Nian to hide a ring in a cake for his girlfriend's proposal, was Ji Nian's suitor proposing to her. Fatty, seeing the ring, urgently informed Hu Li (via phone) that Ji Nian had accepted a ring from an admirer.
This news caused Hu Li to panic, further convinced that Ji Nian was moving on quickly. Frustrated, Hu Li called Ji Nian, accusing her of being happy he left and immediately seeking a new partner. Ji Nian, annoyed by his childishness, reminded him that he was the one who ended their connection. Hu Li, in a fit of pique, demanded she make one hundred cakes for him that night, threatening a bad review if she failed.
Ji Nian defiantly refused his order and hung up. Unable to reach Ji Nian, Hu Li was advised by Bai Dongchen to confront her in person. Meanwhile, Ji Nian drowned her sorrows in alcohol with Luo Li, repeatedly asserting her happiness and freedom, despite Luo Li's concern that she seemed to be crying, not smiling.
Fatty, still observing, corroborated to Hu Li (via phone) that Ji Nian and Luo Li were happily enjoying fried food, reinforcing Hu Li's misconception that Ji Nian was celebrating his absence. Later, a very drunk Ji Nian, after Luo Li had left, stumbled home, talking to herself and apologizing to Hu Li's motorcycle for her past harshness.
She tearfully confessed her guilt for being "bad," for loving money, being stingy, lying, and spitting shells everywhere, lamenting that "he" (Hu Li) wouldn't come back. Hu Li, who had been secretly following and watching over her, heard her words. When she mistook him for a stranger, complimenting his looks while complaining about "him" (Hu Li) being fierce, he revealed himself, calling her "Man Tou" and saying, "I'm back."
Ji Nian, recognizing him through her drunken haze, was momentarily relieved but then accused him of returning to take his belongings, fearing she would be left with nothing. Hu Li tenderly reassured her that he wouldn't take anything and, more importantly, "I will not leave you anymore." Ji Nian, overcome with emotion, clung to him, making him promise repeatedly not to leave. Hu Li then carried the tearful, sleeping Ji Nian to bed.
The next morning, Ji Nian woke up, confused, initially thinking it was a dream. Hu Li called her for breakfast from the kitchen, confirming his presence. He gently chided her for drinking and getting drunk in his absence. Hu Li then sincerely apologized to Ji Nian for making her feel troubled and angry, admitting his difficulty in accepting the circumstances. Ji Nian, in turn, apologized for her deceptions, including faking her leg injury and mischaracterizing him.
Hu Li, with a playful smile, challenged her, "Since you've lied to me, do you want to continue to lie to me?" They shared a moment of understanding and reconciliation. Ji Nian then jokingly complained about him finishing her favorite jam. Hu Li offered to buy more. Ji Nian, looking at him meaningfully, then presented him with the empty jam jar and declared, "I'll return myself to you." Hu Li gently acknowledged her words, implicitly taking on the responsibility, and they embraced and shared a loving kiss.
Episode 11 Recap
Ji Nian woke up and confessed her past lies to Hu Li. Hu Li, pressing her for her true feelings, declared passionately that he was willing to be deceived by her forever. Ji Nian, revealing her true feelings, accepted Hu Li, secretly hoping that his identity as an artificial intelligence would never be exposed. They chose new clothes.
Hu Li playfully evaluated outfits for Ji Nian, whom he called "Man Tou," and himself, "Shi Tou," before they settled on their chosen attire. Looking at each other, Ji Nian told Hu Li he looked handsome. Meanwhile, Zhou Hongwei confronted Yang Zhe, demanding to know about Ji Nian. Yang Zhe revealed that Ji Nian was Zhou Hongwei's daughter and that he had used this information as a bargaining chip to achieve his own goals.
Zhou Hongwei was enraged to learn that his daughter was not only with Hu Li but also loved him despite knowing he was an AI. Yang Zhe countered that Ji Nian was deeply in love with Hu Li, even after discovering his AI identity. He then warned Zhou Hongwei that if he harmed Hu Li, Ji Nian would never forgive him, making their reunion impossible.
Back at the cafe, Ji Nian made Hu Li a special heart-shaped cake and a latte art heart. As they shared a sweet moment, Xiao Pang rushed in and devoured Hu Li's cake. In playful annoyance, Hu Li and Ji Nian made Xiao Pang wear a mascot costume and hand out flyers outside the cafe. Later, Hu Li and Ji Nian gathered Xiao Pang, Luo Li, and Bai Dongchen for dinner at the cafe.
They shyly announced their relationship, though Bai Dongchen quipped that it was already obvious. Hu Li then sang a heartfelt song for everyone, which deeply moved Ji Nian. Unbeknownst to them, agents sent by Zhou Hongwei photographed Hu Li as he sang. After the announcement, Bai Dongchen approached Ji Nian privately. He revealed he knew Hu Li was an AI and pressed her on why she loved him despite knowing he wasn't human.
Ji Nian was surprised he knew, suspecting Yang Zhe. She warned Bai Dongchen not to tell anyone, stating that to her, Hu Li was the brightest star in the sky, regardless of his origin. Later, Hu Li became visibly jealous when Ji Nian took photos with Bai Dongchen. He admitted to being upset, emphasizing that as her boyfriend, he didn't like seeing her so close with another man.
Ji Nian playfully asked if he was jealous, and after he admitted his upset, she kissed him. As they left, Hu Li playfully carried Ji Nian on his back, spinning her around on their way home. Zhou Hongwei visited Bai Dongchen at his villa. Bai Dongchen subtly hinted at his loneliness.
Zhou Hongwei questioned Bai Dongchen about not disclosing Hu Li's identity sooner, to which Bai Dongchen explained he initially only suspected Hu Li's true identity, then confirmed it, and thought it would be better for him if Yang Zhe took Hu Li away. Zhou Hongwei then specifically asked about Ji Nian, and Bai Dongchen revealed Ji Nian had lied to Hu Li about being his girlfriend and that Hu Li believed her.
Zhou Hongwei pondered if he should let Yang Zhe take Hu Li. Bai Dongchen advised him that since Hu Li's supposed "suicide" was publicly accepted and he had lost his memory, he held no value for the company, suggesting it would be better if he left. Convinced, Zhou Hongwei instructed Bai Dongchen to take Hu Li to Yang Zhe's place the next day, so they could depart.
Before Hu Li left, Ji Nian prepared a small kit for him, including plasters, antiseptic, iodine, and critically, Quick-acting Heart Relief Pills, urging him to take one if he felt unwell. She also gave him two candies, one for when he was sad and one for when he missed her. She made him promise to return to her no matter what Yang Zhe said, assuring him they would face everything together.
On the way to meet Yang Zhe, Hu Li asked Bai Dongchen about the pills, sensing a "big bomb" awaited him. Bai Dongchen revealed that Yang Zhe intended for Hu Li to leave, specifically to leave Ji Nian, which Hu Li found hard to believe. Meanwhile, at Smile Cafe, a black-clad man was still secretly observing and photographing the establishment.
At Yang Zhe's lab, Hu Li was shown a screen displaying "AI 2002TQ97" as Yang Zhe finally revealed the truth: Hu Li was an AI. Yang Zhe explained that Zhou Hongwei wanted him eliminated and had orchestrated his disappearance, making it imperative for Hu Li to leave with him. Hu Li vehemently denied being an AI, insisting he was a human with flesh and blood.
Yang Zhe explained that Hu Li was his creation, engineered to be almost indistinguishable from a human, save for a brain chip. He highlighted Hu Li's lack of curiosity about his parents as an AI trait and mentioned his ongoing malfunctions. Hu Li refused to accept the truth or leave initially. He questioned if he was expected to seek refuge with Ji Nian.
Yang Zhe then revealed that Ji Nian was Zhou Hongwei's daughter and that her connection to Zhou Hongwei was the only reason she was safe for Hu Li to be around, a fact Ji Nian was unaware of. Yang Zhe insisted that Zhou Hongwei would never allow them to be together, forcing Hu Li to make a choice. Yang Zhe then restored Hu Li's memories.
As his memories returned, Hu Li's thoughts drifted to his first experience of jealousy and the love diary Ji Nian had given him. He questioned if his cherished memories of the funfair were also implanted, which Yang Zhe confirmed, reiterating that it was all to save him. Feeling like a tool and a pawn in their games, and now fully understanding the truth of his malfunctioning AI nature, Hu Li chose to leave with Yang Zhe.
Amidst Hu Li's turmoil, Yang Zhe received a message. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he quickly messaged Bai Dongchen: "Look for Ji Nian." Moments later, black-clad men stormed into the lab and seized Hu Li. Bai Dongchen swiftly picked up Ji Nian, informing her that Hu Li was in grave danger. They rushed to a desolate factory, where Zhou Hongwei was preparing to destroy Hu Li.
Zhou Hongwei, recounting the five years spent making Hu Li a star, declared his intention to dispose of him as mere "scrap metal." Hu Li sarcastically thanked Zhou Hongwei, acknowledging that without him, he would never have met Ji Nian, but confessed that he had only brought her suffering. He pleaded with Zhou Hongwei not to tell Ji Nian about his true nature. Zhou Hongwei agreed.
As Ji Nian and Bai Dongchen arrived, Ji Nian screamed Hu Li's nickname, "Shi Tou," and rushed to his side. Bai Dongchen urged her to appeal to Zhou Hongwei, reminding her that he was her father and would not harm her. Ji Nian confronted Zhou Hongwei directly, threatening never to forgive him if he harmed Hu Li. Despite Hu Li's pleas for her to leave, insisting he wasn't worth it, Ji Nian steadfastly refused, declaring she would stay with him.
Witnessing his daughter's profound distress, Zhou Hongwei relented and ordered his men to release Hu Li. Ji Nian rushed to Hu Li, checking if he was hurt, and he reassured her he was fine. Bai Dongchen then went to get the car.
Episode 12 Recap
After Ji Nian woke up, she immediately asked Hu Li if he was injured. Hu Li revealed that he had regained his memory and remembered everything. He dismissed Zhou Hongwei's pursuit as a misunderstanding that was now resolved, assuring Ji Nian that Zhou Hongwei would no longer harm him. Ji Nian wondered if Hu Li now knew he was an AI.
As she tried to explain her complex relationship with Zhou Hongwei, Hu Li cut her off, stating he wouldn't hold her accountable for past events since she was Zhou Hongwei's daughter and had once saved him. Hu Li then presented Ji Nian with a bank card, explaining that the money was enough for her to pay off her debts, buy the coffee shop, and live the life she desired. He then abruptly told her that they should break up.
When Ji Nian asked if his decision was due to her connection with Zhou Hongwei, Hu Li denied it, saying he simply wanted to start a new life, as they were fundamentally on different paths and should not meet again. Ji Nian, heartbroken, questioned what their past together meant. Hu Li coldly stated he already had someone he liked who had been waiting for him.
When Ji Nian pointed out he still kept their photo album, he replied that he feared she would use it as leverage, then threw the album into the pouring rain before walking away. Ji Nian was left in tears, crying uncontrollably. Meanwhile, Zhou Hongwei contacted Yang Zhe, confirming Ji Nian's minor injuries and instructing Yang Zhe to take Hu Li away and ensure he never returned.
While he expressed regret regarding Ji Nian, Zhou Hongwei also mentioned a previous promise he had made regarding Hu Li, implying it was for Ji Nian's protection. He then firmly declared he would never allow Ji Nian to be with an AI, warning Yang Zhe not to let Hu Li appear before Ji Nian again, lest he regret his decision. Yang Zhe agreed.
Back at the cafe, Ji Nian's friend Luo Li, who had come to check on her on behalf of Ms. Fiona, and Xiao Pang found her engrossed in creating new desserts she called the "Heartbroken Series," with names like "I Brighten The Moon With My Heart, But The Moonlight Shining On The Drain" and "Falling Flowers Have Good Intention, Flowing Water Doesn't Have Feelings."
She playfully insisted they taste her creations, which evoked strong emotional reactions—Xiao Pang felt like crying, while Luo Li felt nauseous. Ji Nian announced her plan to participate in the Youhu Cup Dessert Competition to win the 100,000 RMB prize money to study abroad, finally pursuing her long-delayed dreams. Xiao Pang, now working at the cafe to atone for his brother's actions, lamented that Hu Li was a "modern Chen Shi Mei."
Despite her cheerful demeanor, Luo Li remained concerned about Ji Nian's emotional state. Later, Zhou Hongwei visited Ji Nian, attempting to reconcile and calling her "Nian Nian." He expressed regret over their years apart and offered to compensate her. Ji Nian flatly refused, stating that her mother was the one who deserved compensation. She confronted him about abandoning her mother, forcing her to be seen as a "third party," despite his claims of preparing for divorce.
Ji Nian affirmed that she was living a good life now and demanded that he no longer disturb her or her mother. She also boldly asserted that, regardless of whether Hu Li was human or AI, he had the right to live. As Hu Li was packing his belongings, Bai Dongchen arrived and presented a robot as a farewell gift, which he nicknamed "Broom Brother."
He boasted about the robot's powerful functions, suggesting it would keep Hu Li from being lonely, and proclaimed Hu Li as its "Brother Hu." Annoyed, Hu Li tried to refuse the gift. Bai Dongchen, however, seemed pleased, claiming Hu Li's departure would remove his biggest obstacle in the entertainment industry. He then wished Hu Li a smooth journey.
Shortly after, orchestrated by Bai Dongchen to reignite Hu Li's will to live, news broke across the media that Hu Li was, in fact, alive and living a secluded life with a mysterious girlfriend. The report also questioned Zhou Hongwei's previous public confirmation of Hu Li's death. Hu Li's fans reacted with a mix of joy and anger. Luo Li frantically called Ji Nian to warn her that the coffee shop was surrounded by fans.
During this phone call, Ji Nian reiterated her plan to participate in the Youhu Cup Dessert Competition to win the 100,000 RMB prize money. She explained that this prize money, combined with funds Yang Zhe had previously given her, would be enough to pay off her debts and pursue her dream of studying abroad.
Ji Nian then arrived at the Youhu Cup Dessert Competition, where she was immediately swarmed by reporters, who accused her of exploiting Hu Li's depression and holding him captive. Just as the situation escalated, Hu Li dramatically arrived on his motorcycle, pulling Ji Nian away from the crowd. Once they were alone, Ji Nian angrily demanded to know why she was being branded his "runaway girlfriend," reminding him that they had no ongoing relationship.
Hu Li explained he had just learned about the news and promised to resolve it. Ji Nian retorted, asking if he planned to solve it by paying off more people, accusing him of using her to stage his comeback. Hu Li asked if that was truly how she viewed him. Ji Nian responded that he was no longer the "Shi Tou" she knew, but rather "superstar Hu Li," and she no longer understood him.
She urged him not to play on her emotions, as it wouldn't work. She insisted that he publicly declare their non-relationship to his fans so she could return to her normal life. Hu Li agreed to give her what she wanted. As Ji Nian walked away, telling him she didn't need his heroic acts, Hu Li silently reflected, "I have never been a hero, but the only person I want to protect is you."
Hu Li later confronted Bai Dongchen about leaking the news. Bai Dongchen, unperturbed, was engrossed in a video game as he calmly explained his actions, arguing that if Hu Li lost both his stage and Ji Nian, he might lose the will to live. Bai Dongchen emphasized that Hu Li's mission as an AI was to protect the stage, and his own mission was to protect Hu Li and his stage.
He asserted that he would not allow Yang Zhe to take Hu Li away and strip him of his hope. At this point, Yang Zhe arrived, and the conversation shifted. Yang Zhe admitted to Bai Dongchen that he regretted his past selfishness and expressed his desire for Bai Dongchen to forget his assigned mission and make his own choices.
In response, Bai Dongchen (in Hu Li's presence) challenged Hu Li to make his own choice, to see if AI could defy fate. Zhou Hongwei then presented Hu Li with a public relations emergency plan. He proposed a press conference where Hu Li would claim his disappearance was due to depression and that Ji Nian had merely saved him by chance. Zhou Hongwei intended to arrange a "fake couple" pairing for Hu Li with another female artist to deflect attention.
Hu Li vehemently rejected the plan, accusing Zhou Hongwei of trying to control him again. He pointed out that photos of him and Ji Nian were already public, making a fake coupling absurd. When Zhou Hongwei questioned if Hu Li intended to force a "binding" with Ji Nian, Hu Li threatened to publicly reveal his AI identity, knowing Zhou Hongwei wouldn't dare.
Zhou Hongwei countered by reminding Hu Li that he was merely a "product" that could be "made to disappear" at any time. Hu Li, however, asserted that while humans destroying AI might not be illegal, an AI's resistance against humans was another matter. He declared he wouldn't resort to such measures because he was "more human" than Zhou Hongwei. Hu Li then announced his intention to make a comeback, "and with Ji Nian."
Later, at the Youhu Cup Dessert Competition, Ji Nian was again cornered by reporters, who aggressively questioned if she had imprisoned Hu Li using his depression. At that moment, Hu Li arrived, visibly recalling Yang Zhe's earlier words about having the freedom to choose and protect the person he loved, and that a solution for his malfunction was possible with time. Stepping forward amidst the flashing cameras, Hu Li boldly announced to the world, "I am Hu Li. I am still alive. Ji Nian saved me and accompanied me during my most desperate time. She is my girlfriend. She is the person I want to protect."
Episode 13 Recap
After months of absence, Hu Li made his first public appearance, where he declared Ji Nian his girlfriend and vowed to protect her, aiming to quash ongoing rumors and speculation about his disappearance and alleged memory loss. This move, however, deeply angered Ji Nian, who confronted him in the car, accusing him of manipulating her for his comeback after promising to restore her normal life.
Hu Li argued that publicizing their relationship was the quickest way to calm public opinion, suggesting they could officially break up once the storm passed and he would help her resume a normal life. Ji Nian viewed this as a transactional deal and vehemently refused, asserting her desire to be left alone, even if it meant facing public criticism.
Her frustration escalated when Hu Li revealed he had already canceled her participation in an upcoming competition, promising to compensate the organizers. Feeling powerless and enraged by his control over her life, Ji Nian demanded he release her. Meanwhile, reporters continued to hound Ji Nian. Upon learning of the situation, Zhou Hongwei, her boss, was furious. He immediately ordered his top public relations team to suppress all news about Ji Nian and delete her information from online platforms.
He also instructed his staff to closely monitor Hu Li, suspicious that Hu Li would not easily let go of Ji Nian despite their agreement to break up after the media frenzy. Zhou Hongwei stated that if Hu Li continued to cling to Ji Nian, he would take the drastic step of eliminating Hu Li, regardless of the risks.
Soon after, Zhou Hongwei made arrangements for his daughter, Zhou Yifei, to be picked up from the airport by Bai Dong Chen, believing he was the only one who could manage her. Bai Dong Chen met Zhou Yifei at the airport. She was annoyed that Hu Li hadn't come to pick her up, but Bai Dong Chen assured her he hadn't seen Hu Li at the cafe.
Later, Zhou Yifei questioned Bai Dong Chen about Hu Li and Ji Nian's relationship, refusing to believe they were truly together, dismissing Ji Nian as "nothing special." She then tried to persuade Bai Dong Chen to act as a "spy" and help her win Hu Li back, offering him a carefully chosen gift. Bai Dong Chen declined, stating his busy schedule. Zhou Yifei, undeterred, declared her confidence in winning Hu Li back regardless of his help.
She then abruptly left the car. A flashback revealed Bai Dong Chen's own struggles as a young aspiring independent singer. He had presented a song he had spent six months writing to Zhou Hongwei, only for it to be dismissed. Zhou Hongwei told him he wasn't talented enough to debut alone and reminded him that all the company's efforts were focused on Hu Li, warning him against "unrealistic fantasies."
Frustrated, Bai Dong Chen had thrown his guitar on a rooftop, where he encountered a tearful young Zhou Yifei, who had just faced rejection. She criticized him for giving up, passionately asserting that strong will could overcome any obstacle and that one should never let others' opinions dictate their dreams. She confessed her tears were from defiance, not weakness, and vowed to prove her worth to those who doubted her.
The two bonded over their shared frustrations, promising to keep each other's vulnerable moments a secret. Zhou Yifei then playfully warned Bai Dong Chen not to fall for her, as her heart already belonged to someone else. Back in the present, Ji Nian expressed her exhaustion to a friend, lamenting the seemingly endless ordeal.
Her friend advised her to be grateful, pointing out that Hu Li could have easily branded her a malicious anti-fan and sued her, which would have had far worse consequences. The friend urged Ji Nian to maintain her public persona, reminding her that they had financially gained from the situation. However, the friend cautioned Ji Nian not to be swayed by Hu Li's charm, a warning Ji Nian dismissed, vowing not to be fooled.
Zhou Yifei then appeared at Ji Nian's cafe, introducing herself as "an old friend of Hu Li." She made it clear that she had come to assess Hu Li's rumored girlfriend, remarking that Ji Nian was "nothing special." Zhou Yifei’s ambiguous declaration of her claim over Hu Li led Ji Nian to mistakenly believe she was the woman Hu Li truly loved.
Feeling disappointed and like an insignificant pawn, Ji Nian became even more determined to sever ties with Hu Li. Zhou Yifei warned Ji Nian not to mistake Hu Li's public declaration as anything more than a temporary measure, reminding her of Hu Li's discerning taste and cautioning her against taking the "show" too seriously.
Ji Nian, agreeing that she had no real say in the matter and wished to avoid the entertainment industry entirely, then politely but firmly asked Zhou Yifei not to visit her again, stating that private meetings were inappropriate. Zhou Yifei agreed, confident that her warning had been delivered. Moments later, Bai Dong Chen observed Hu Li looking dejected and asked if Ji Nian's lack of forgiveness was the cause.
He questioned if Hu Li, as an artificial intelligence, truly possessed a heart. Hu Li, still unable to reveal his true identity, wondered if Ji Nian would accept him if she knew. He decided that the time wasn't right to tell her, preferring to wait until his "repairs" were complete before attempting to win her back on genuine terms. Bai Dong Chen, however, warned that Hu Li's current secretive approach might leave him with nothing in the end.
Bai Dong Chen also mentioned that Zhou Yifei had returned, a piece of news Hu Li dismissed as irrelevant to him. Ji Nian, trying to resume normalcy, called Fei Ouna, the cafe owner, to reassure her about the cafe's improving situation. To her shock, Fei Ouna revealed she had already sold the cafe to "Shi Tou" (Bai Dong Chen's nickname) and was now traveling abroad.
Feeling utterly displaced and helpless, Ji Nian found her home surrounded by reporters, preventing her from returning. Hu Li intervened, trying to calm her. Ji Nian angrily blamed him for her predicament, accusing him of manipulating her and buying the cafe, making her homeless. She attempted to push past him to confront the reporters, but Hu Li restrained her, urging her to come with him to devise a plan. Hu Li brought Ji Nian to his villa.
With Bai Dong Chen present, Hu Li proposed a solution: they would maintain their public "couple" status by participating in a reality show. In exchange, Hu Li offered Ji Nian full ownership of the cafe after their agreement ended, promising to clear her home loan and help her find a new job.
Ji Nian, recognizing it as a transaction, agreed but demanded a written contract specifying the terms and a maximum duration of one month for their public relationship, rejecting Hu Li's proposal for two months. She initially resisted the idea of living in the villa during the show, but Bai Dong Chen convinced her it was the safest option given the media frenzy surrounding her home. The filming for the reality show began.
On camera, Hu Li and Ji Nian played the role of a sweet, doting couple. Hu Li woke early to prepare honey water for Ji Nian, playfully calling her his "little lazy pig." He surprised her with a lavish breakfast, feeding her with loving gestures. The director pushed them for more intimate moments, seeking a "heartwarming feeling." They continued to enact romantic scenes, including sharing heart-shaped eggs. Off-camera, however, Ji Nian appeared visibly exhausted and distant.
News reports celebrated Hu Li's successful comeback and the "high-sweet romance" and "high-profile daily life" he shared with his non-celebrity girlfriend on the reality show, effectively dispelling rumors. During a scene where Ji Nian was meant to act surprised by crystal shoes, a crew member coached her on exaggerated reactions and offered eye drops for emotional tears.
As they continued filming, looking at dresses, Hu Li made an unscripted gesture, kneeling to put a high-heeled shoe on Ji Nian's foot, hinting at a deeper connection beneath their contractual facade.
Episode 14 Recap
The reality show videos featuring Hu Li and Ji Nian have aired, leading to widespread public discussion. Some viewers perceive their story as a modern Cinderella romance, while others believe Ji Nian is not a suitable partner for Hu Li. Seeing the high engagement, Zhou Hongwei believes that as people gradually accept Ji Nian, past issues will fade. He instructs his team to monitor fan activity, guiding discussions and suppressing any negative narratives about Ji Nian.
He also mentions that his daughter, Zhou Yifei, will be joining the production team the following day, requesting extra security for her and viewing it as an opportunity for the half-sisters to foster their relationship. The reality show director decides to reshoot Ji Nian's initial arrival at Hu Li's villa, aiming to portray the feeling of Cinderella entering a grand palace and highlighting the contrast between her humble identity and the luxurious environment. The director encourages an exaggerated performance.
Ji Nian enthusiastically agrees, assuring them she is adept at this role and will give her best act. During the filming, she performs with over-the-top surprise, remarking on the house's immense size and luxurious decor, comparing it to a palace. Hu Li plays along, confirming it will be her home and affectionately calling her "my princess."
She also dramatically speculates about mermaids in the swimming pool, which Hu Li's manager finds excessive, though Ji Nian insists it creates "drama effect" and will generate many real-time comments. She also comments on the expensive marble. Hu Li, in character, suggests they swim there every morning, making Ji Nian respond that he treats her so well. Off-camera, Hu Li wryly comments on her "really bad" acting. Hu Li suddenly calls a halt to filming.
Zhou Yifei arrives on set to see Hu Li, prompting Ji Nian to abruptly leave, stating she will depart since Hu Li has a guest. Bai Dongchen follows Ji Nian and compliments her, calling her a "qualified actress" whose emotions seem real.
Ji Nian then questions if Zhou Yifei and Hu Li are close, to which Bai Dongchen confirms they are, adding that Zhou Yifei is also Zhou Hongwei's daughter, making her Ji Nian's half-sister and thus "in a way related" to Ji Nian. Zhou Yifei then seeks out Hu Li and asks him to give her a tour of the villa, similar to how he did for Ji Nian.
Hu Li declines, stating he doesn't have that "hobby" and suggesting Bai Dongchen would have already shown her around. Zhou Yifei presses further, asking if he plans to break up with Ji Nian once the reality show concludes. She recounts her surprise at being half-sisters with Ji Nian, finding the situation "dramatic but interesting." She provocatively suggests Ji Nian might feel like a "misfortune daughter" whose father was "grabbed" and now "Mr. Right" is also being coveted.
Hu Li cuts her off, firmly stating that Ji Nian is "not a nonsense woman" but "Ji Nian," who simply doesn't have a father who loves her so much. He declares that he and Zhou Yifei were never a possibility in the past, and certainly not now. Zhou Yifei expresses regret for having left after he rejected her confession, which allowed "the nonsense woman" to take advantage. Hu Li reiterates that Ji Nian is not a "nonsense woman."
Zhou Yifei then warns Hu Li that she always gets what she wants and currently "loves Hu Li." Hu Li dismisses her, stating it's none of her business. Zhou Yifei asks if his rejection is because of Ji Nian, and offers to wait until he breaks up with Ji Nian. Hu Li firmly tells her he has made his position clear and dismisses her.
She sarcastically asks if, as a gentleman, he shouldn't escort her out, but he only sends her as far as the door. Hu Li then confronts Bai Dongchen, warning him not to bring anyone into the villa without permission. Bai Dongchen retorts that it's his house too and he has the freedom to bring friends.
Hu Li proposes they split their guest reception areas to prevent misunderstandings, clarifying that he and Bai Dongchen are "not related at all" outside of having "cooperated once." Seeing this exchange, Zhou Yifei asks Bai Dongchen if he will simply stand by and watch Hu Li treat her this way. Bai Dongchen responds that there is nothing he can do if she "forces him to accept you," implying she should have anticipated this outcome.
Later, at dinner in the villa, Hu Li offers Ji Nian steamed bread, but she refuses to eat. She launches into a tirade, complaining about the overly large dining table, likening it to a ping-pong table and claiming the vast villa "can't feel the warmth of a home" and is full of "weird" things.
She confesses she's "had enough" of acting like a "clown" for "nonsense people," comparing the villa to a "jail" and expressing how she misses her own bed and wants to go home. Hu Li attempts to calm her by calling her "Man Tou," but she snaps back, telling him not to call her that and that discussing it with him is useless; she needs to calm down.
After her outburst, Ji Nian plays basketball with Fatty, who asks if she feels better. She replies she's still angry and, in jest, suggests imagining the basket as Hu Li's face, though she quickly amends it to his feet, saying she wouldn't smash Hu Li's face. Still feeling frustrated, she agrees to go somewhere more fun with Fatty. Meanwhile, Hu Li and Fatty are waiting outside Ji Nian's house, which is swarming with reporters.
Fatty questions how much longer they need to wait, noting the reporters aren't leaving. Hu Li then devises a plan, suggesting a "big news" story might distract them. He sends Fatty an address and instructs him to leak information about Bai Dongchen "dating secretly with Zhou Yifei," asking if that would be "big news." True to his plan, reporters at Ji Nian's house, who were complaining about having no other leads, suddenly receive a tip about Bai Dongchen.
They immediately scramble into their cars, abandoning Ji Nian's house to chase Bai Dongchen's scandal. Bai Dongchen and Zhou Yifei are then ambushed by the press during their dinner, forcing them to leave without eating. Back at Ji Nian's empty house, Hu Li and Fatty pack her belongings. Hu Li comments that the villa's "decorations are cold" and instructs Fatty to pack Ji Nian's plush toys and her smaller dining table.
Fatty points out that the villa was designed according to Hu Li's preference for "low-profile luxury." Hu Li dismisses this, stating that "humans' taste will improve," unlike Fatty's, and urges him to finish packing. Ji Nian receives a phone call from her friend, who playfully teases her about her "Wow" reaction in the reality show having "gone viral" and being "so famous now."
Ji Nian, however, expresses her weariness with pretending and states she will be "relieved" once this period is over. Her friend, who is at Ji Nian's house to collect some baking items, suddenly realizes the house is empty and asks if it has been "robbed" or "ransacked." Ji Nian, momentarily shocked, tells her friend not to call the police yet. Upon returning to the villa, Ji Nian finds her familiar belongings, including her dining table, set up.
Hu Li tells her he has arranged for the large table to be used solely for meetings, with her smaller dining table now in place for meals, fulfilling "whatever you said." He explains that as the "hostess in the contract," the house's arrangements "should follow your thoughts and likings." He reveals he moved her belongings because she couldn't sleep in the unfamiliar bed, hoping a "familiar smell" would help her feel more at ease.
Ji Nian is visibly touched by this gesture, but she quickly states she needs to go prepare for filming. During another filming session, reporters suddenly swarm Ji Nian, snapping photos and interrogating her. Hu Li immediately intervenes, pushing through the crowd to protect her, telling the reporters to stop filming and "pay attention to your manner." He escorts a shaken Ji Nian away.
The director apologizes, claiming they didn't anticipate the situation and that it was not planned, but merely "real recordings." Hu Li angrily lambasts the director, accusing the production team of disregarding Ji Nian's safety and sarcastically praising their "professionalism" for capturing a "real scenario." Fatty confirms that the crew, upon seeing fans arrive, improvised a "fan visit" segment, leading to the incident. Fatty tries to pacify Hu Li, reminding him of their continued cooperation with the team.
Hu Li, however, demands an immediate halt to filming for two days until the production team addresses the issue. The director offers profuse apologies, promising to rectify the situation and ensure it never happens again. Later, Zhou Yifei approaches Ji Nian, expressing thanks for her "hard work" in pretending to be Hu Li's girlfriend, claiming she now understands their "fake couple" status.
She apologizes for her "bad attitude" at the coffee shop, explaining it was due to her intense feelings for Hu Li and fear of losing him. She offers Ji Nian a newly purchased necklace as an "apology gesture" and a token of "gratitude," insisting Ji Nian accept it. Ji Nian initially declines but Zhou Yifei forces it on her.
Ji Nian later takes off the necklace and states to Zhou Yifei that they "can't be friends," even without Hu Li, because they "don't suit each other." She reiterates her thanks for the necklace and leaves. Afterward, Hu Li tries to comfort Ji Nian, asking if she was scared by the reporters. Ji Nian denies it, claiming she wasn't shocked and even enjoyed the "more the merrier" atmosphere, feeling happy to see his fans protect him.
Hu Li tells her to "stop acting," as there are "no recorders around now." Ji Nian then tearfully confesses she's "had enough" and is "not an actress" who can constantly pretend. She's "very tired" and questions whether their actions are truly solving problems, fearing his fans and "the person who is waiting for you" (Zhou Yifei) will "hate me more and more." She calls herself "just a liar" and wants to stop.
Hu Li tries to reassure her, promising such incidents won't recur, and clarifying that the recent reporter ambush was a "programme team's arrangement," not genuine fans. Ji Nian counters that the production team merely caters to audience desires: seeing an "ordinary person" enter the entertainment industry, "make jokes and be embarrassed like a clown." Hu Li asks her to endure for "one more month." Ji Nian recoils from his touch, accusing him of not understanding her feelings.
She reveals that his act of moving her belongings to the villa, meant to make her happy, only makes her "even sadder" because she can no longer discern if his actions are "genuine." She fears being happy or letting down her guard, worried she will "go deeper" and "must handle you carefully." She desperately pulls off the necklace Zhou Yifei gave her, saying it "makes me breathless." Hu Li attempts to help her, but she pushes him away, telling him not to move. He implores her to trust him.
Episode 15 Recap
Zhou Yifei arrived on the set of Hu Li's new drama and immediately arranged for reporters to capture seemingly intimate moments between them. When Bai Dongchen confronted her, she declared her intention to make Hu Li hers once filming concluded, believing she and Hu Li were the perfect match. Bai Dongchen criticized her plan to release a press statement, pointing out it would only label her as the "other woman" while Hu Li was still with Ji Nian.
He explained that true affection wasn't about possessiveness, but about feeling joy and happiness whenever you saw the person you liked. Zhou Yifei sensed that Bai Dongchen might have someone he cared for, but he swiftly denied it, citing company rules against celebrity scandals. Meanwhile, Hu Li learned that Ji Nian had left, upset by his close interaction with Zhou Yifei at the set.
He ordered Fatty to find her and bring her back, but Fatty refused, saying Ji Nian was too angry and that "love matters" were for Hu Li to handle himself. Hu Li, at a loss, granted Fatty leave, hinting that he should pursue his own romantic interest. Ji Nian was at a night market with Luo Li, who was spending time with her. Ji Nian confided in Luo Li that she had decided to end things with Hu Li.
To her surprise, she discovered that Luo Li and Fatty were now seeing each other. Ji Nian happily advised Fatty to treat Luo Li well, unlike "some people" who were "indecisive" and "played the field." Fatty attempted to defend Hu Li, revealing that Zhou Yifei had paid to create the trending topic about her and Hu Li. Shortly after, Hu Li called Fatty, trying to reach Ji Nian.
Ji Nian snatched the phone, angrily calling Hu Li a "scumbag" and a "two-timer." She told him she was leaving and never coming back, warning him not to bother her life again before hanging up abruptly. Hu Li, though saddened by the breakup, instructed Fatty to take care of Ji Nian, who he believed was drunk, and ensure she got home safely.
Alone, Hu Li confided in his AI companion, Broom Brother (referring to his internal AI system), questioning if revealing his true identity as an AI to Ji Nian was the right thing to do. He worried she wouldn't believe such a "fantasy story," or that she would be hurt and ultimately leave him, potentially leading to his own "scrap iron" demise. He was at a loss, beginning to doubt if his initial decision to hide everything was correct.
Later, Ji Nian met her senior, Zhao Lin, at a cafe. Zhao Lin, having just returned from abroad, expressed his concern for her, remarking on her physical appearance and how he had seen her name frequently in entertainment news. He praised her enduring self-deprecating humor and offered her an exchange student opportunity through his institution, knowing she once desired to study overseas.
Ji Nian requested time to consider, and Zhao Lin advised her to discuss it with Hu Li if she decided to go. Unbeknownst to them, Luo Li, who was nearby, snapped a photo of Zhao Lin gently patting Ji Nian's head, sending it to Fatty with the mischievous claim that they were on a date. Fatty forwarded the picture to Hu Li.
Consumed by jealousy, Hu Li rushed to the cafe, grabbed Ji Nian, and pulled her away, accusing her of publicly dating and forgetting her "identity." Ji Nian retaliated, highlighting the hypocrisy of his words given their "fake" relationship and his supposed romantic entanglement with Zhou Yifei. Hu Li vehemently denied involvement with Zhou Yifei, professing his love only for Ji Nian.
Unconvinced, Ji Nian declared her intention to go abroad, which Hu Li tried to forbid, asserting his claim as her boyfriend. As their argument escalated, Ji Nian expressed her hatred and desire to never see him again. Desperate, Hu Li blurted out the truth: "I am AI." He explained he was Kewen's AI idol, and an error had led to his current situation.
He confessed to hiding it because he feared her reaction, hoping to find a fix before revealing all. He pleaded with her to reconsider and give him a chance. Stunned, Ji Nian simply stated she wished to be alone and fled. Hu Li, left alone and anxious, spoke with Bai Dongchen, wondering if Ji Nian's flight was due to her inability to accept him as an AI.
At that moment, Zhou Yifei appeared, seemingly trying to draw Hu Li's attention by pretending to stumble and fall towards him. Hu Li, however, pushed her directly into the nearby swimming pool, sternly warning her to stop harassing him and Ji Nian. Bai Dongchen, though surprised by Hu Li's actions, retrieved Zhou Yifei from the water, remarking that he had to save his own woman.
As he comforted Zhou Yifei, he assured her that Hu Li's previous deceit was because of his AI identity, suggesting Hu Li genuinely cared for her. He even subtly encouraged ""Zhou Yifei"" to "teach him a lesson" for the pain he caused. Ji Nian, happy about Hu Li's confession but still wanting to teach him a lesson first, confronted him inside the house, pushing him.
She called him "useless scrap iron" for lying to her and for not knowing his own purpose, and threatened to sell him to recover her "losses." Hu Li's internal systems flashed "Scrap iron! Cannot clear obstacle!" as he struggled with her words. Later, Ji Nian was at home, contemplating Hu Li's revelation. She looked at her old, malfunctioning robot, Broom Brother, considering it "broken" but then reflecting that it could be "repaired."
This introspection suggested a shift in her perspective, acknowledging the possibility of fixing something seemingly broken, much like Hu Li. Bai Dongchen then approached Ji Nian, who was wondering if Hu Li thought she disliked him for being an AI. Bai Dongchen revealed that ""Ji Nian herself"" had known about Hu Li's AI status much earlier, even before Hu Li had his memories restored.
He clarified that Dr. Yang indeed had a way to "save" Hu Li, but it involved a "backup plan" that required Bai Dongchen himself, as he was also an AI. This method would damage Bai Dongchen, and their superior, Zhou Hongwei, had initially refused to allow it because he wanted Bai Dongchen to replace Hu Li.
Bai Dongchen, expressing his own AI identity and his love for Zhou Yifei, offered Ji Nian a deal: if she left Hu Li, he would save Hu Li for Zhou Yifei, whom he wished to see happy. Seeing no other way to ensure Hu Li's survival, Ji Nian, despite her internal conflict, agreed to Bai Dongchen's terms.
Unaware of Ji Nian's difficult decision, Hu Li, now understanding that Ji Nian already knew about his AI nature, planned a romantic confession at an amusement park. Fatty helped him prepare, suggesting grand gestures with yellow roses and "revolving lanterns" to create an "unsurpassed" romantic atmosphere. Hu Li, after some thought, decided such a display would be "too excessive" and unsuited for Ji Nian.
He then practiced a more sincere apology and confession, envisioning himself approaching Ji Nian with loving eyes and pleading for another chance. He waited anxiously at the amusement park, dismissing Fatty when it grew late, determined to wait for Ji Nian alone. Finally, Ji Nian arrived. Hu Li, relieved, immediately launched into his heartfelt apology.
He expressed deep remorse for lying and for not revealing his AI identity sooner, explaining his fear that she would leave him or be hurt if his issues couldn't be fixed. He promised to support her dream of studying abroad and would wait for her, affirming that she was the only one he loved and wished to protect. He earnestly begged for another chance. With tears in her eyes, Ji Nian firmly rejected him.
She declared it was "too late" and that she could "never accept" being with an AI. She yearned for a "normal life," "ordinary love," and a "normal human boyfriend," asking if he could provide that. Hu Li was left heartbroken, unable to answer her final, poignant question.
Episode 16 Recap
The filming of their project wrapped up, and Ji Nian politely declined the director's invitation to a celebratory dinner, stating she had other plans. Watching her leave, Hu Li was deeply confused by her sudden change of heart. He wondered why Ji Nian, who had known he was an artificial intelligence for a while and had even protected him, was now choosing to depart.
Bai Dongchen suggested that Ji Nian simply regretted their relationship, asserting that they were fundamentally incompatible, regardless of Hu Li being an AI or a celebrity, because Ji Nian desired an ordinary life that Hu Li couldn't provide. Bai Dongchen implied that Hu Li no longer needed Ji Nian's protection, but Hu Li countered that he was now capable of protecting her, a notion Bai Dongchen dismissed as not what Ji Nian truly wanted.
Ji Nian attended an "International Conference on Theory and Practice in Journalism" where Zhao Lin was speaking. After his presentation, Zhao Lin informed Ji Nian that the arrangements for her overseas study were complete, including a tuition-free scholarship, and directed her to the lounge to fill out the necessary forms. Shortly after, Song Mengmeng appeared with Zhuo Yuan, mentioning that Zhuo Yuan was present to interview Hu Li.
Song Mengmeng then made a pointed comment about Ji Nian's popularity with male students in college, hinting at Zhao Lin's past affections for her. Meanwhile, in an adjacent building, Hu Li's press conference for his new drama was underway. During the Q&A, Zhou Yifei described her character's male lead as "domineering but loving, like a superhero," and stated that this was "very similar to Hu Li."
A reporter then asked if Hu Li was a superhero in Zhou Yifei's heart and inquired about rumors of them falling in love due to the show. Hu Li intervened, cutting the question short and stating they would only answer questions related to the drama. After the press conference, Bai Dongchen confronted Zhuo Yuan, criticizing his interviewing skills but acknowledging his talent for gossip, and subtly warned him about a compromising "bar photo."
While Ji Nian was in the lounge to fill out her overseas study forms, Song Mengmeng seized the opportunity to lock her in a restroom, taking a photo of an online article titled "Hu Li's non-celebrity girlfriend secretly seeing another man" and gloating about Ji Nian's impending trouble. Meanwhile, Hu Li later pulled Zhou Yifei aside, unhappy with her veiled suggestions during the press conference.
Zhou Yifei retorted that since he and Ji Nian had broken up, her actions were none of his concern. Hu Li firmly declared that even if he broke up with Ji Nian, he would never be with her, and ordered her to stop slandering Ji Nian. Zhou Yifei, frustrated, demanded to know why she was inferior to Ji Nian. Hu Li explained that his lack of affection for her was unrelated to Ji Nian and she shouldn't compare herself.
Zhou Yifei then revealed that Ji Nian was going abroad with another man and vowed to make her life difficult. Exasperated, Hu Li issued a final warning against her spreading baseless rumors and hurting Ji Nian. Zhou Yifei defiantly declared her love for Hu Li and hatred for Ji Nian, asserting her right to do as she pleased. Hu Li, in a shocking move, asked her if she would still act this way if Ji Nian was her sister.
A fire alarm suddenly blared throughout the hotel. As people frantically evacuated, Hu Li's assistant urged him to leave, but Hu Li insisted on finding Ji Nian. Trapped, Ji Nian desperately called for help. Hu Li, speaking on the phone with Ji Nian (using their affectionate nicknames "Shi Tou" and "Man Tou"), learned she was in a restroom on the second floor.
Ji Nian urged him not to come, fearing for his health, but Hu Li vowed he would never leave her. Overwhelmed by emotion, Ji Nian tearfully apologized for her previous coldness, confessed her love for him, and promised never to leave him if she survived. Hu Li found her, kicked open the door, and carried her out through the smoke and fleeing crowds. However, due to the emotional stress, Hu Li suffered another power leakage and collapsed.
Ji Nian screamed for help. Zhuo Yuan, who had been observing from a hidden spot, quickly vanished, while Bai Dongchen rushed to their aid and helped carry Hu Li out. Hu Li eventually woke up and immediately asked about Ji Nian. Bai Dongchen, dryly, told him to worry about himself, confirming that Hu Li had suffered another power leakage and would have been "scrapped" if not for him.
Ji Nian brought Hu Li some porridge, but Bai Dongchen mockingly remarked that it was useless for an AI. Bai Dongchen also suggested that Ji Nian's sudden change of heart was merely typical female unpredictability. Ji Nian later spoke with Dr. Yang, who assured her that Hu Li would recover as long as he maintained a calm emotional state.
Ji Nian then questioned Dr. Yang about Bai Dongchen's claim that he was the only one who could save Hu Li, and if his condition—that she leave Hu Li for Zhou Yifei—was true. Dr. Yang confirmed that Bai Dongchen was indeed an AI, and reassured Ji Nian that she would handle the situation and advised her to focus on caring for Hu Li. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei confronted her father, Zhou Hongwei, asking about his relationship with Ji Nian.
Zhou Hongwei admitted that Ji Nian was her half-sister. He explained that his divorce from Zhou Yifei's mother stemmed from a lack of affection and living separately, and Ji Nian's mother was unaware of their marital issues. He stated that his efforts to indulge Zhou Yifei were an attempt to compensate her. Zhou Yifei expressed regret for her past actions towards Ji Nian upon learning this truth.
Zhou Hongwei then warned Zhou Yifei not to take Hu Li's affection seriously, suggesting that Hu Li, having had high standards before his accident, might only be 'acting'. Returning to Hu Li, Ji Nian was questioned by him about her intentions to leave and if her previous rejection stemmed from his AI status. He reiterated Dr. Yang's assurance of his recovery and his similarity to a human.
Ji Nian, holding a framed photo of them, clarified that she wasn't leaving but merely intended to hang the photo. Overjoyed, Hu Li embraced her tightly, proclaiming his sole desire was to hold her. They reflected on their earlier misunderstandings. Hu Li was upset that Bai Dongchen, also an AI, had kept his true nature a secret, making Hu Li feel foolish about Bai Dongchen's perceived "human pride."
Ji Nian speculated that Bai Dongchen's actions were driven by his feelings for Zhou Yifei. They forgave each other, acknowledging that they both had kept secrets out of fear of separation. Ji Nian suggested they maintain a good relationship with Bai Dongchen until Dr. Yang could find a permanent solution for Hu Li's power leakage. Hu Li admitted to feeling weak and "low on battery." He then playfully demonstrated his "charging method" with a kiss.
Hu Li then confronted Bai Dongchen, who was packing his belongings. Hu Li accused him of being a coward and maliciously manipulating Ji Nian, blaming Bai Dongchen for their breakup and the chain of events that led to Ji Nian being trapped and Hu Li nearly dying. Bai Dongchen dismissed Hu Li's accusations as mere "heroics."
Bai Dongchen acknowledged his responsibility to save Hu Li, as they were the only two of their "rare species" who should assist each other, but maintained his superiority as a "second-generation" AI. Hu Li scoffed at this, wondering if even second-generation AIs had "bugs," and playfully chased Bai Dongchen, attempting to "inspect" him. Ji Nian later met Zhao Lin at a café.
Zhao Lin apologized for not realizing she was trapped during the fire and expressed his admiration for Hu Li's courageous rescue. He then revealed that Ji Nian's overseas study opportunity, including her chosen university, tuition, and a financial card, had been arranged by her father, Zhou Hongwei, who was against her relationship with Hu Li. Zhao Lin hoped that witnessing Hu Li's actions might change Zhou Hongwei's mind.
Ji Nian thanked him and asked him to return the card to her father. As Zhao Lin left to catch his flight, he told her to contact him if she ever wished to pursue studying abroad. Ji Nian met Zhou Hongwei for dinner and returned the card, informing him of her decision to forego studying abroad.
Zhou Hongwei expressed his desire for her to live a simple, stable life like any ordinary girl, with a loving partner, and reiterated his belief that Hu Li was not suitable. Ji Nian, however, firmly declared her deep love for Hu Li, regardless of whether he was human or AI, or if his condition could be cured. She expressed her unwavering desire to be with him, for a day or a lifetime.
She pleaded with Zhou Hongwei not to interfere in their relationship, to grant them his blessing, and to help find a cure for Hu Li. Touched, Zhou Hongwei told her that her name, Ji Nian, meant to cherish the present and beautiful things, living each day happily. Ji Nian was deeply moved and thought of her mother, whom she missed dearly. Later, Hu Li called Ji Nian, who was thinking of him. He suggested they go on a movie date. Ji Nian happily agreed, and as she spoke, Hu Li surprised her by appearing behind her. They embraced, reaffirming their love.
Episode 17 Recap
Zhou Hongwei showed Bai Dongchen surveillance footage of Ji Nian being locked in a hotel bathroom. Bai Dongchen recognized Song Mengmeng and also identified an entertainment reporter, Zhuo Yuan, who was present during the incident. He told Zhou Hongwei that he and Zhou Yifei would handle Song Mengmeng, noting that Zhou Yifei was now aware of her relationship with Ji Nian and could help her sister, fostering their bond.
Concerned about Hu Li's condition, Zhou Hongwei asked if Yang Zhe had any way to save him. Bai Dongchen admitted he wasn't sure but mentioned Yang Zhe's continuous efforts and offered his own assistance. Bai Dongchen sensed Zhou Hongwei's change of heart about saving Hu Li, and Zhou Hongwei confirmed he would continue funding Yang Zhe's research. Bai Dongchen then approached Zhou Yifei, who had been avoiding him, asking if she felt guilty.
He presented her with the video of Ji Nian being trapped. Enraged by the malicious act, Zhou Yifei vowed revenge, lamenting her past malicious actions towards Ji Nian now that she knew Ji Nian was her sister. Bai Dongchen advised her to calm down and led her to confront Song Mengmeng, but not before Zhou Yifei insisted on changing and doing her makeup to make a grand entrance.
When they found Song Mengmeng, Zhou Yifei sarcastically offered her "premium green tea," a pointed insult. Song Mengmeng tried to dismiss the video as an accident, but Zhou Yifei and Bai Dongchen pressed her, threatening to involve the police for attempted intentional harm. Zhou Yifei declared Ji Nian as her sister and warned Song Mengmeng to stay far away from her.
Shocked by the revelation of their sibling relationship (to Song Mengmeng), Song Mengmeng promised to never bother Ji Nian again, but Zhou Yifei still made her pay for the "green tea." Meanwhile, Hu Li and Ji Nian went to a cinema for a date. Ji Nian urged Hu Li to keep his mask on, fearing they would be recognized, especially by night-vision cameras. Hu Li reassured her that in the dark, no one would see them.
During the movie, Hu Li playfully asked if he had once played a cool dragon character on screen. As they left the cinema, fans quickly spotted Hu Li. They tried to escape, but Hu Li suddenly stopped, removed his mask, and publicly kissed Ji Nian, declaring that it would dispel rumors of discord and show his fans how adorable his girlfriend was. The fans captured the moment, causing a sensation online.
Separately, Yang Yun, acting on Zhou Hongwei's behalf, attempted to pay off Zhuo Yuan to keep the video of Hu Li fainting a secret. Zhuo Yuan, however, became suspicious, wondering why such a video, which could boost Hu Li's reputation, was being suppressed. Yang Yun warned him that Chief Zhou did not want anyone to see the video, and that disclosing it would lead to him losing both the money and his career in the industry.
Zhuo Yuan, recognizing the stakes, indicated he understood. Back at Ji Nian's cafe, Luo Li, her friend, complained that Hu Li and Ji Nian's public romance had only brought temporary buzz, not lasting business, and that fans were now leaving hateful comments about Ji Nian. Ji Nian suggested improving the coffee itself. Luo Li then joked about Ji Nian being "sour" like a lemon, reflecting the fans' current mood.
Later, at the film set, Hu Li's assistant, guarding his dressing room, explained that Hu Li was inside meeting with Chief Zhou, and no one was allowed to enter. Zhuo Yuan, acting furtively, feigned concern about Hu Li's well-being, mentioning that it was Zhou Yifei's birthday and Chief Zhou must be there for that. He used this pretense to get past the assistant. Inside, Zhou Hongwei presented Hu Li with a termination contract, giving him freedom.
As a father, he wished Ji Nian a happy, peaceful life, despite still not wanting them together. Hu Li, without hesitation, chose Ji Nian, promising Zhou Hongwei he would dedicate his time and energy to her happiness. After the meeting, Zhuo Yuan stealthily entered Hu Li's empty dressing room and photographed the signed termination contract. Ji Nian arrived at the set with a birthday cake she had personally baked for Zhou Yifei.
Zhuo Yuan immediately cornered her, asking about Hu Li and subtly hinting at his previous fainting spell, implying a secret illness. Zhou Yifei, arriving just in time, fiercely interrupted Zhuo Yuan. She publicly confirmed Ji Nian was her sister, the daughter of Kewen Entertainment's boss, and warned Zhuo Yuan, referencing Song Mengmeng's past misdeeds and her hold over her.
Ji Nian and Zhou Yifei then left, with Ji Nian noting Zhou Yifei’s overbearing nature, but admitting she was touched by the display of protection. Ji Nian teased Zhou Yifei for having to beg her to make the cake and attend the party, while Zhou Yifei pointed out Ji Nian was wearing the necklace she had gifted her.
During this time, Zhou Yifei's co-star, Lin Shan, brazenly confronted her, criticizing her for being a privileged actress who got roles through investment, implying her acting was poor, her temper bad, and she was slowing down production. Zhou Yifei, despite her usual feistiness, listened silently and teared up after Lin Shan's relentless taunts, admitting that many of the accusations were true and that her current troubles stemmed from Hu Li.
Ji Nian, observing this, tried to comfort Zhou Yifei, acknowledging her temper but defending her kindness, encouraging her to improve her acting, and reminding her of her contributions to the show. Seeing that words weren't enough, Ji Nian suggested they go to KTV to drink and sing their worries away. Hu Li, meanwhile, was discussing his newly acquired freedom with Bai Dongchen.
Bai Dongchen noted that Hu Li's success in getting the contract terminated was due to his and Yang Zhe's plan, leveraging Zhou Hongwei's guilt towards Ji Nian. Hu Li expressed concern that his public life had complicated Ji Nian’s desire for a simple life. Bai Dongchen countered that a thrilling romance might be what Ji Nian truly wanted. Hu Li then accused Bai Dongchen of hypocrisy, threatening Ji Nian on one hand while advising him on the other.
Bai Dongchen simply told Hu Li to see and hear only what he wanted him to. Hu Li then reminded Bai Dongchen about Zhou Yifei's birthday party invitation to Ji Nian, implying Bai Dongchen should be more proactive. As Ji Nian and Zhou Yifei were at KTV, letting loose, Zhou Yifei asked if Ji Nian ever felt she wasn't qualified to be her sister.
Ji Nian admitted to having thought so initially but had come to find Zhou Yifei quite endearing. Zhou Yifei then acknowledged her past resentment towards their father, Zhou Hongwei, but declared that from now on, she would be Ji Nian's protective older sister, her "backer." Touched by this, Ji Nian revealed a secret: Bai Dongchen was in love with Zhou Yifei. Zhou Yifei, however, dismissed it as impossible, calling Bai Dongchen "fierce."
Suddenly, Hu Li and Bai Dongchen burst into the KTV room, having strategically agreed that Bai Dongchen would handle Zhou Yifei while Hu Li focused on Ji Nian. Ji Nian tried to get Hu Li to toast with Zhou Yifei to bury the hatchet, but Hu Li, who couldn't drink, quickly "fainted" after a small sip.
Ji Nian, playing along, quickly grabbed Hu Li and her handbag, telling Bai Dongchen to take care of Zhou Yifei, and rushed out, giving Bai Dongchen an opportunity alone with Zhou Yifei. Zhou Yifei, left feeling abandoned, complained that Ji Nian had broken her promise as a birthday girl. Bai Dongchen sat her down. He then sang "Happy Birthday" to a tearful Zhou Yifei and presented her with a bracelet, promising to fulfill all her wishes. As she drifted off to sleep, Bai Dongchen gently kissed Zhou Yifei on the forehead.
Episode 18 Recap
After a KTV session, Ji Nian and Zhou Yifei reconciled over drinks, with Ji Nian feeling a newfound closeness and touched by her sister's protective stance against Zhuo Yuan earlier. She shared her joy with Hu Li, expressing how having Zhou Yifei made her feel less alone since their mother's passing. Ji Nian also revealed that she had told Zhou Yifei about Bai Dongchen's feelings, though Zhou Yifei didn't believe it.
Hu Li and Bai Dongchen arrived at the KTV, and Ji Nian subtly hinted for Hu Li to pretend to be drunk so they could leave first. Hu Li, feeling a pang of jealousy, reassured Ji Nian that he would spoil her more than anyone and promised to give her a home.
When Ji Nian playfully suggested Bai Dongchen and Zhou Yifei would be a good match, Hu Li grew more envious, reminding her of Bai Dongchen's past actions and insisting he was a better partner. He then affectionately showed Ji Nian how much he cherished her. Meanwhile, Bai Dongchen romantically celebrated Zhou Yifei's birthday. While Zhou Yifei was drunk, she asked Bai Dongchen if he liked her, but she passed out before he could explicitly answer.
He softly confessed his feelings to her as she slept. The next morning, Bai Dongchen drove Zhou Yifei to the set, advising her to be prepared for her scene with Lin Shan. Zhou Yifei, still fuzzy from the night before, asked if she had said anything strange, which Bai Dongchen denied. She then probed if he had said anything unusual, which he also denied, claiming he wasn't drunk.
Later, as Bai Dongchen gently applied ice to Zhou Yifei's injured cheek, he urged her not to act impulsively again, stating that those who cared for her would be pained. Zhou Yifei directly asked if he had told her he liked her while she was drunk. Bai Dongchen denied it, suggesting she might have been hallucinating. When she pressed him about his feelings after knowing each other for so long, he only stated he felt a "good friend" connection.
Upset by his denial, Zhou Yifei angrily told him she no longer needed his care. Separately, Zhuo Yuan approached a hacker in person, offering money to infiltrate Kewen Entertainment's system to find damaging information on Hu Li. The hacker was initially hesitant, citing the low pay for such a high-risk task, but agreed to proceed after Zhuo Yuan provided a deposit and promised more upon success.
On the film set, during a dramatic scene, Lin Shan unexpectedly slapped Zhou Yifei, claiming it was an improvisation to enhance the character's emotions. Zhou Yifei, angered, accused Lin Shan of taking personal revenge. When the director tried to smooth things over, Zhou Yifei demanded to reshoot the scene. In the next take, the situation escalated into a full-blown physical altercation between Lin Shan and Zhou Yifei.
Ji Nian, arriving on set, rushed to intervene but was accidentally slapped by Lin Shan amidst the chaos. Hu Li quickly came to Ji Nian's side, tending to her injury. Ji Nian believed there was more to Lin Shan's hostility and asked Hu Li to investigate. Hu Li later confronted Lin Shan, who admitted that Zhou Yifei had taken the lead role from her best friend by bringing capital into the production, prompting Lin Shan to seek revenge.
Hu Li calmly advised her that professional actors should not let personal grievances interfere with their work. Meanwhile, Ji Nian attended a job interview, which went exceptionally well, securing her a position with a private office and a sea view, much to her delight. However, her excitement was short-lived when she overheard colleagues gossiping, attributing her success solely to her relationship with Hu Li and his influence, leaving her feeling deflated.
As reporters swarmed her, questioning her job search and relationship status, Hu Li appeared and whisked her away to the beach. There, he swapped her uncomfortable shoes for new ones and consoled her, telling her that her worth was not defined by others' opinions and comparing her resilience to beautiful shells that retain their luster despite being trodden upon.
Ji Nian then playfully asked if his presence had disrupted her life, to which Hu Li responded that he was here to stay. Unable to walk due to her aching feet, Ji Nian asked Hu Li for a piggyback ride, and he happily became her "human porter." Later, Hu Li met with Bai Dongchen at Ji Nian's favorite roadside stall. He reflected on how Ji Nian had broadened his horizons, just as he had introduced her to a new world. Expressing his desire to provide her with security and a home, Hu Li revealed his intention to propose to Ji Nian at the wrap-up party.
Episode 19 Recap
On the day of the wrap party, Zhou Yifei and Lin Shan resolved their past grievances. Bai Dongchen reminded Zhou Yifei to keep Hu Li's impending marriage proposal a secret from Zhou Hongwei, as Zhou Hongwei was unlikely to accept the marriage. Earlier that day, Ji Nian and Hu Li enjoyed some time at Smile Cafe, making desserts and affectionately calling each other "Man Tou" and "Little Stone."
Hu Li then invited Luo Li to the wrap party, offering her paid leave from the cafe, suggesting she could use the opportunity to spend time with her friend, Xiao Pang. As they prepared for the event, Ji Nian complimented Hu Li's dashing appearance. Hu Li then presented Ji Nian with a beautiful gown, telling her it was for his first comeback drama and he wanted to share every significant moment of his life with her.
Ji Nian initially felt it was too extravagant for someone not in the spotlight, but she loved it and changed into it, captivating Hu Li. Before they left for the venue, Hu Li tied a ribbon around Ji Nian's wrist, symbolizing his presence with her even if he couldn't stand by her on stage, and expressed his wish for them to spend every important day together, dressed in matching outfits and holding hands.
Upon arrival at the venue, Bai Dongchen also garnered attention from fans. The host began the wrap party by inviting Hu Li to unveil the first promotional video for their drama. However, to everyone's shock, the large screen displayed a video exposing Hu Li as an artificial intelligence, including assembly diagrams. Chaos erupted as media reporters swarmed Hu Li, demanding explanations. In the commotion, Ji Nian was pushed and frightened. Zhou Hongwei quickly stepped in, taking control of the situation.
He announced that the video was merely a teaser for Hu Li's upcoming sci-fi romantic drama, "My Boyfriend Is Not Human", and a promotional effort for Kewen Entertainment's new sci-fi series. Immediately after the incident, Zhou Yifei angrily called Zhou Hongwei, accusing him of orchestrating the video leak. Zhou Hongwei's playful responses implied his involvement, or at least his knowledge of it, and mentioned the potential financial gains from such publicity.
Meanwhile, Hu Li had taken Ji Nian to a quiet room to comfort her. He reassured her that he and Zhou Hongwei would investigate the video leak. Ji Nian, however, worried that Zhou Hongwei might be behind it. Hu Li dismissed the idea, revealing that Zhou Hongwei had already offered to terminate his contract, allowing him to leave the entertainment industry if he wished.
Ji Nian was concerned about Hu Li giving up his passion for the stage, but he declared he would do so if it meant escaping public scrutiny and fulfilling her dreams with her, even abroad. Ji Nian encouraged him instead to pursue his passion and shine, promising they would overcome any difficulties together as long as they held hands.
Back in the main hall, Zhou Yifei confronted Zhou Hongwei and Bai Dongchen in person, demanding to know if her father had intentionally obstructed Hu Li's proposal. She accidentally let slip Hu Li's plan to propose to Ji Nian, surprising Zhou Hongwei. Zhou Yifei warned her father not to interfere with the proposal and angrily walked away with Bai Dongchen when her father became stern. Later, Zhou Yifei continued to discuss the AI revelation with Bai Dongchen.
Initially, she believed it to be a clever publicity stunt, amused by netizens' imaginative comments about dating AI. But Bai Dongchen subtly led her to consider the possibility that Hu Li was genuinely an artificial intelligence. Zhou Yifei was shocked when she realized it was true, remarking that besides his handsome looks and singing talent, Hu Li didn't exhibit any "mysterious functions" like AI in dramas.
She then admitted that as a friend, she didn't mind, but as Ji Nian's sister, she worried about the challenges they would face. Bai Dongchen pressed her further, asking if she would personally accept an AI partner. Zhou Yifei confessed that she didn't know and might not be able to accept it as Ji Nian had, as it was "beyond her imagination," which left Bai Dongchen feeling disheartened. She cautioned him not to reveal any of this to Zhou Hongwei.
Zhou Hongwei approached Ji Nian, explaining that he intervened at the wrap party for her sake. He confirmed Hu Li's intention to propose that night. While stating he wouldn't deny her happiness, he urged her to carefully consider marriage. He revealed that Yang Zhe had orchestrated Hu Li's search for her after his memory loss, tasking Zhou Hongwei with protecting Hu Li. He then showed Ji Nian her childhood diary, revealing that Hu Li had found it.
He explained that they had met as children at an amusement park and that the Hu Li she knew then was identical to the Hu Li now, implying that Hu Li does not age. Zhou Hongwei asked Ji Nian to contemplate the implications of their relationship decades into the future.
Ji Nian reminisced about her childhood encounter with the "big star" and "Xiao Po Hai" boy from her diary, whom she had given a paper crane and asked to find her if he ever felt lost or unhappy. Haunted by Zhou Hongwei's words, Ji Nian returned home looking pale and unwell, prompting Hu Li to express concern. She excused herself, saying she was tired. She then experienced a nightmare where she had aged considerably, while Hu Li remained youthful.
Hu Li's fans ridiculed her age, and Hu Li himself, confused, asked, "Who are you? You are not Man Tou." The dream underscored her growing fear of the disparity in their aging processes. Hu Li, burdened by his identity, discussed his worries with Bai Dongchen. He questioned if he had underestimated the complexities of his relationship with Ji Nian and if he would regret it when she eventually aged.
Bai Dongchen dismissed his concerns, reminding him of his deep feelings for Ji Nian and his commitment to her. Hu Li then voiced fears about his identity being exposed, potentially disrupting Ji Nian's peace, or what would happen if he couldn't be repaired. Bai Dongchen reassured him that Dr. Yang was actively seeking solutions and urged him not to give up hope, advising him to use actions to alleviate Ji Nian's current anxieties.
Taking Bai Dongchen's advice, Hu Li prepared a romantic surprise at home and presented Ji Nian with a bouquet of flowers, ready to propose. He expressed his desire to give her everything, pouring his heart into the gesture. However, Ji Nian, still deeply affected by the revelations and her nightmare, recounted her childhood memory of meeting him. She acknowledged his "superstar" status and how they had found each other.
But then she directly addressed the painful truth: their differing aging processes. She pointed out that he looked the same now as he did when she was six, and he would remain unchanged while she aged from a "little sister" to an "elder sister," then "auntie," and eventually "grandmother." She concluded that they were fundamentally different and could not grow old together, making such a future an unattainable luxury.
Despite Hu Li's insistence that he would always stay with her, Ji Nian tearfully apologized, stating that she couldn't accept his proposal at this moment. Heartbroken, Hu Li suffered an emotional overload, causing him to leak electricity and lose the memory of this painful rejection.
Episode 20 Recap
Ji Nian woke up the morning after Hu Li's proposal to find the apartment in disarray, strewn with petals and balloons. Hu Li, however, seemed to have no recollection of the previous night's events, jokingly accusing Ji Nian of throwing a party without him. Ji Nian was confused and realized he had completely forgotten the proposal. She worried he might have lost his memory due to emotional shock and called Yang Zhe for an explanation.
Yang Zhe assured her that such memory loss was a normal reaction to severe emotional stress, which eased Ji Nian's concerns slightly, though she still fretted about Hu Li's inability to age. Meanwhile, Zhuo Yuan met with Zhou Hongwei, presenting video footage of Hu Li short-circuiting as "real evidence" of him being an AI. Zhuo Yuan attempted to blackmail Zhou Hongwei, but Zhou Hongwei was unfazed.
He ordered Yang Yun to report Zhuo Yuan to the police for hiring hackers, declaring that he would address the matter through legal channels rather than yield to the demands of a "money-minded person" who would be a "bottomless pit." Bai Dongchen later found Hu Li, who was still bewildered by his memory lapse. Bai Dongchen informed him that he had proposed to Ji Nian, but she had rejected him.
Hu Li was stunned, and Bai Dongchen explained that Ji Nian's true apprehension stemmed from his inability to age alongside her. This revelation made Hu Li realize the depth of the issue. Bai Dongchen encouraged him not to give up, emphasizing Hu Li's deep connection with Ji Nian and that only he could alleviate her worries.
Trying to lift Ji Nian's spirits, Zhou Yifei took her out, suggesting various beauty treatments like a "comic fringe," "younger-looking milk tea color," and "orange soda makeup" to help her feel more confident about aging. Their outing was interrupted when Ji Nian received a call from Fei Ouna, who had just returned and was at the cafe. Ji Nian quickly left to meet her.
At the cafe, Ji Nian was happy to see Fei Ouna but puzzled by her long absence and the headscarf she was wearing instead of her usual curly hair. Fei Ouna revealed she had been seriously ill, and her hair had fallen out due to the treatment.
She then confessed that Hu Li (whom she affectionately called "Shi Tou") had bought the cafe from her at a significantly higher price than expected to help her cover medical expenses for her treatment abroad, and she had asked him to keep it a secret. Fei Ouna shared her regret about her late husband, who died before they could fulfill their dream of traveling the world together.
She emphasized that when it comes to love, one should never hesitate, as missing an opportunity is the greatest regret. She also imparted wisdom: the person who passes away first is often the fortunate one, while the one left behind must be brave. She encouraged Hu Li to be braver with Ji Nian. Deeply moved, Hu Li promised Fei Ouna that he would not "lose" Ji Nian.
On their way back, Ji Nian apologized to Hu Li, realizing her past misunderstandings about the cafe and regretting her earlier "cowardly" words during the proposal. They agreed to cherish their present moments together. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei continued her shopping alone, calling Bai Dongchen to join her. She confronted him about her birthday, asking if he had denied saying he liked her. Bai Dongchen dismissed her, denying any such declaration and suggesting she was "making a fuss" and had "misunderstood."
Frustrated and hurt, Zhou Yifei declared she would never see him again and would stop bothering him. Later, Zhou Hongwei saw Bai Dongchen dropping Zhou Yifei off. Realizing his daughter's affections for Bai Dongchen, he subtly suggested Zhou Yifei go abroad to visit her mother, and feeling "nothing left anymore," Zhou Yifei agreed to leave. Concerned, Zhou Yifei called Ji Nian, informing her of her imminent departure that afternoon.
Ji Nian then called Bai Dongchen, urging him to stop Zhou Yifei. She reminded him of his past willingness to push Hu Li towards Zhou Yifei for her happiness and questioned why he was now giving up when Zhou Yifei finally reciprocated his feelings. Bai Dongchen remained resolute, stating that not everyone had the right to pursue love, and not everyone could accept a relationship with an AI. He asked Ji Nian not to interfere in his personal matters.
Despite Bai Dongchen's request, Ji Nian, unwilling to let Zhou Yifei live with regret, decided to reveal the truth. She called Zhou Yifei and told her that Bai Dongchen was also an AI. This revelation brought clarity to Zhou Yifei, who finally understood Bai Dongchen's evasiveness. She immediately rushed to confront him, calling him a "coward" for hiding his true identity when others knew.
She asked him directly if he liked her and if he would wait for her if she confessed her feelings. Bai Dongchen, however, denied ever saying he would wait. Later, Hu Li, having applied old-age makeup, called Ji Nian, pretending to be lost and unable to find his way home. When Ji Nian arrived, she was met by Hu Li, now appearing with white hair.
He told her that Fei Ouna's words had made him realize that "growing old together" meant "accompanying each other until old age," not just "loving until old age." He asserted that if he could accompany her throughout her life, nothing else mattered. Ji Nian expressed her fears of aging, becoming "unworthy" of him, and growing distant. Hu Li reassured her, saying that reaching old age together would be the greatest happiness.
He asked her to remember his current and "old" appearance, promising to remember her as his "cutest Man Tou" forever. Ji Nian, still concerned about leaving him alone when she eventually passed away, was reminded by Hu Li of Fei Ouna's words: the one who leaves first is lucky, and the one left behind must be brave.
He vowed to accompany, care for, and love her forever, and even if she were to leave him one day, he would ask Yang Zhe to deactivate him, ensuring he wouldn't live alone. Deeply touched by his profound declaration, Ji Nian apologized for her earlier cowardice and wholeheartedly agreed to face their future together, regardless of how long or challenging the path might be, affirming that he was the best.
Episode 21 Recap
Zhuo Yuan from Youhu Entertainment was arrested by the police today, implicated in dealing with hackers to steal commercial secrets and infiltrate Kewen Entertainment's internal system, his reputation ruined. The collection of videos he uploaded previously, showcasing Hu Li's power leaks, resurfaced online and immediately propelled the topic of Hu Li being an AI into a trending search.
Zhou Hongwei expressed his concern to Hu Li, explaining that many partners had already sent termination agreements, and he was struggling to find a way to mitigate the widespread negative impact. Hu Li then proposed making his identity as an AI public. Zhou Hongwei was initially shocked, calling the idea crazy, and questioned how Ji Nian would accept it and how the public would view their relationship.
Hu Li countered that Ji Nian wouldn't care about public opinion; his main goal was to allow her to live without constant fear of the unknown. He affirmed his resolve to accept any outcome of his public disclosure, stating he only wished for Ji Nian to be at peace by his side. Seeing Hu Li's determination, Zhou Hongwei conceded, agreeing to cooperate if Ji Nian consented.
Hu Li also shared his decision with Bai Dongchen, thanking him for his unwavering support. Bai Dongchen assured Hu Li that he would back his decision to go public, remarking on Hu Li's courage to do things he wouldn't dare. Hu Li confided that Ji Nian gave him the strength to choose his own life and he was confident she would understand his choice.
He added that even if she didn't support his public disclosure, he was prepared to protect her from any overwhelming public opinion or rumors. Hu Li then encouraged Bai Dongchen to stop living so restrained and take a step forward in his own life. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei confided in Ji Nian, expressing her frustration after being rejected by Bai Dongchen again. She questioned Ji Nian about her feelings regarding Hu Li's identity.
Ji Nian admitted that she wished they could keep it hidden, especially since Hu Li cherishes his stage and the adoration of his fans. However, if disclosure was inevitable, she would stand by him. Zhou Yifei wisely suggested that Ji Nian shouldn't impose her own fears on Hu Li and instead ask for his true feelings.
That night, Hu Li went to Ji Nian's room to discuss his decision to publicly reveal his AI identity, mentioning he had already told her father. Ji Nian, who had independently come to the same conclusion, expressed her unwavering support. She told him to proceed with the announcement, promising to stand by him no matter what, even jokingly offering to support him financially if his career ended.
Hu Li, in turn, confessed that with her support, he wasn't afraid of anything. They decided to spend a few quiet days together before the press conference, cherishing their time as a couple before facing the potential storm and allowing ample time for crisis public relations.
Ji Nian even playfully captured moments of Hu Li on her phone, intending to compile them into a video to show the public that Hu Li, despite being an AI, is a normal person with emotions. Hu Li surprised Ji Nian with a romantic "Chinese Food" themed meal, personally preparing dishes like "Hu Li's Omelette of Love," a "Harbin Red Sausage Platter," and "Master Hu's Ham Ramen," all made with his special touch.
Despite his amateur cooking, Ji Nian appreciated the gesture. Afterwards, he taught her how to dance, and they shared intimate moments. Ji Nian then proposed a role-playing game where they swapped identities. Hu Li donned a wig and Ji Nian's pink clothes, playfully mimicking her "mediocre college student" past while he boasted about being the "man of the moment" in a hilarious impersonation of himself, bringing laughter and joy to their quiet time together.
During this time, Zhou Yifei visited Bai Dongchen on his set and intervened when another female actress became overly familiar with him. Bai Dongchen, though cold towards the actress, did not show much warmth to Zhou Yifei either. Frustrated, Zhou Yifei stormed off to a bar. While drunk, she video-called Bai Dongchen, expressing that she would no longer like him, but he couldn't get her location.
Later, as she was being harassed by a group of hooligans in the street, Bai Dongchen arrived just in time, fighting them off and rescuing her. In an emotional confrontation, Zhou Yifei demanded to know if he had ever liked her. After a moment of hesitation, Bai Dongchen finally admitted, "I like you." The two then shared a deep embrace and kiss, finally giving in to their feelings for each other.
Episode 22 Recap
Kewen Entertainment held a press conference where Chairman Zhou Hongwei apologized for the delay in addressing the rumors. He officially confirmed that Hu Li is indeed an AI idol, meticulously developed by Kewen Entertainment. Zhou Hongwei explained that the company’s original intention was to create a perfect idol that met all fan expectations, but recent online rumors had clouded public judgment.
He announced that Hu Li would soon issue his own apology and statement, asking for more time and understanding for Hu Li, whom he described as a victim in the situation. Following the press conference, both Hu Li and Ji Nian released their respective statements. Ji Nian also uploaded a video she created, aiming to sway public opinion. Hu Li asked Ji Nian if she was scared now that everyone knew her boyfriend was an AI.
Ji Nian confidently replied that there was nothing to fear, as it only made him unique, and she pledged to face whatever came next with him. News reports quickly spread the story of Hu Li’s public confession and Kewen’s release of his engineering files. Ji Nian's video played a crucial role, depicting Hu Li’s charming and sometimes clumsy daily life, showing his big appetite, his snoring, talking in his sleep, and even his fear of bugs.
She narrated that Hu Li laughs, makes trouble, cries, and possesses warmth and vitality, emphasizing that his origin no longer mattered as he was her real boyfriend. Public sentiment quickly shifted, with many viewers expressing surprise but also increased affection for Hu Li, admiring his and Ji Nian’s unique love story. While their car was vandalized with abusive anti-AI messages, supportive fans also left encouraging notes.
Hu Li, finding the mix of messages "chic," instructed his assistant "Fatty" not to clean them off. Meanwhile, Zhou Yifei prepared a loving bento for Bai Dongchen, intending a romantic date. However, Bai Dongchen became playfully jealous when he noticed Zhou Yifei engrossed in news about Hu Li and Ji Nian on her phone. Zhou Yifei clarified she was merely happy for her sister and Hu Li.
When Bai Dongchen suggested they also go public with their relationship, Zhou Yifei initially demurred, joking that Hu Li and Ji Nian had stolen their thunder. She then playfully boasted that her boyfriend was far more impressive, being handsome, kind, and, crucially, without any "electrical leaks." This led to a humorous chase as she "checked" if he was leaking, reinforcing their sweet affection.
They later spent the day at a movie theater, watching films they had missed, feeding each other popcorn. Zhou Yifei asked if she was his first love and the first girl to kiss his cheek, which he confirmed. She then shared that he was also the first boy she had ever fed popcorn to. Bai Dongchen then surprised her with a romantic dinner he had prepared, insisting that a good boyfriend would never let his girlfriend pay.
They exchanged affectionate words, reveling in their growing closeness. Zhou Hongwei informed Hu Li that Ji Nian’s video had been a monumental success, guaranteeing him a flood of new opportunities, including three major film offers. During a meeting, directors, eager to capitalize on his AI identity, proposed roles requiring Hu Li to fly, attract metal, or shoot lasers. Hu Li, however, confessed he possessed none of these "superpowers." Ji Nian intervened, suggesting they first review the scripts for suitable roles.
Seizing an opportunity, Hu Li and Ji Nian excused themselves to the restroom, effectively escaping the meeting and leaving Zhou Hongwei to handle the bewildered directors. Hu Li expressed frustration that he had "flaws" rather than extraordinary abilities. His schedule became relentlessly packed, pushing him through five hours of non-stop photoshoots, making him feel like a perpetual motion machine.
His manager informed him his sleep was now limited to less than six hours, but Hu Li remained self-absorbed, joking about maintaining his perfect looks without beauty sleep. His assistant pointed out that Ji Nian’s video had also made her famous, with many praising her kindness and cleverness for turning public opinion around.
When the assistant playfully suggested he might debut because of his cute round face, Hu Li jealously declared that his "Man Tou" (Ji Nian) belonged only to him. To reward everyone for their hard work, Hu Li offered to treat them to dinner. Reporters soon swarmed Hu Li and Ji Nian’s apartment, confirming Hu Li’s earlier observation that their public identity would leave them no peace.
Hu Li, in a dramatic gesture, invited Ji Nian, his "heroine," to roam the world with him. She, matching his theatricality, asked if he could provide food and drink, to which he promised to share everything. They decided to drive away, finding solace and quiet at the seaside. Under the stars, they confessed their deep fortune in having found each other.
Their romantic dinner was abruptly interrupted by a mob of anti-AI extremists who hurled insults and water bottles at them, yelling "Death to AI!" Hu Li instinctively shielded Ji Nian, but the stress caused his body to malfunction, his power visibly leaking. Panicked, Ji Nian called Zhou Yifei for help. When Zhou Yifei and Bai Dongchen arrived, they saw the pervasive reporters and the critical situation. Zhou Yifei worried about Hu Li being photographed in his compromised state.
Bai Dongchen reassured her they would distract the crowd. Zhou Yifei then executed a bold plan: she passionately kissed Bai Dongchen in front of all the reporters, loudly calling out his name. This sensational act immediately drew all the media attention away from Hu Li and Ji Nian, creating a "breaking news" frenzy and domineeringly announcing their relationship. With the crowd distracted, Bai Dongchen and Zhou Yifei savored their moment of public affection.
Zhou Yifei teasingly asked if he felt "hooked" and if being her public boyfriend wasn’t an improvement. Bai Dongchen, honored, confirmed his commitment. Ji Nian then arrived to check on Hu Li. Before joining them, Zhou Yifei instructed Bai Dongchen to leave, explaining that as a public couple, they were now too obvious a target. Ji Nian found Hu Li, who recognized her and complained of feeling completely drained, as if "out of power."
Dr. Yang arrived and confirmed that while Hu Li had not lost his memory, electrical leakages would now be a regular occurrence. He advised Hu Li to rest, stabilize his emotions, and avoid seeking attention, especially given his unstable condition. Ji Nian was deeply concerned. Later, Dr. Yang privately revealed to Bai Dongchen that Hu Li's comatose periods were lengthening, the frequency of his leakages would increase, and he might develop other symptoms.
The worst-case scenario was "scrap," meaning complete system failure. Dr. Yang admitted he hadn't found a permanent solution and was reluctant to take the "ultimate step," hoping Bai Dongchen could also have a "right to life" like Hu Li. However, Bai Dongchen declared he had already made up his mind.
He instructed Dr. Yang that when the inevitable day arrived, he should not hesitate to remove Bai Dongchen's chip and transfer it to Hu Li, completing the original plan, convinced it was "the best arrangement."
Episode 23 Recap
Hu Li awoke to a disturbing symptom: a loss of color vision, which nearly led to a car accident when he couldn't distinguish a red light. Despite his distress, he simply told Ji Nian, who was with him, that he was distracted and asked her to take a taxi to her interview, while he went to see Yang Zhe. Meanwhile, Bai Dongchen began what he intended to be a final day of happiness with Zhou Yifei.
He surprised her with a date to do "couple things," expressing his desire to make up for a previous argument. They posed for photos with excited fans, with Bai Dongchen making sure Zhou Yifei looked beautiful. They visited a spot where couples hung wishes. Bai Dongchen's message simply wished Zhou Yifei eternal happiness, excluding himself, which Zhou Yifei noted, before hanging her own wish for them to be together forever until she became an old woman.
They reminisced at the place where they first met, recalling their initial encounter and Bai Dongchen's admission that he was destined to love her even before he was conscious. He expressed how happy he was, wishing he had told her he loved her sooner. At the lab, Hu Li pressed Yang Zhe for the truth about his worsening condition.
Yang Zhe confirmed that Hu Li's declining senses and past amnesia were symptoms of a damaged chip, warning that his functions would continue to deteriorate, eventually leading to his demise. When Hu Li inquired about a possible cure, Yang Zhe revealed that Bai Dongchen had been fitted with a core program identical to Hu Li's, specifically designed to save him, but at the cost of Bai Dongchen's own life.
Hu Li, horrified, compared this to the destructive intent of Zhou Hongwei and stated he wouldn't allow it. Unaware of Hu Li's true condition, Ji Nian was elated when she received an unexpected job offer after her initial interview failed. The company praised her "Hu Li's Daily Life" video for its professional program production, rhythm, and her on-camera style, offering her a position as a reporter.
Later, Hu Li called the company representative, thanking them and admitting he owed them a favor for giving Ji Nian the opportunity, confirming he had secretly arranged it. Ji Nian excitedly returned home to share her good news with Hu Li. They kissed and celebrated with red wine. However, as Hu Li poured hot water, he became momentarily detached, letting the scalding water run over his hand without reaction.
Ji Nian, alarmed by his blank stare and strange behavior over the past few days, urgently asked him what was wrong, but he simply dismissed it, saying he was fine. Later, Hu Li confronted Bai Dongchen, asking whether their bond was a "mission" or a "friendship." Bai Dongchen confessed to being tired of secrets, explaining that ever since he learned he was an AI created to protect Hu Li, he could no longer differentiate.
Hu Li urged him to forget the mission and simply be friends, emphasizing Bai Dongchen's right to choose his own life. Bai Dongchen countered that Hu Li needed life, not friends, adding that he wouldn't force Hu Li and would make his own plans, jokingly offering to be a guest at Hu Li's upcoming farewell concert, suggesting they were "bound together by fate."
Hu Li then took Ji Nian to a "Time Post Office" to write postcards to their future selves. Ji Nian penned a hopeful message about their future happy family, with Hu Li as her "perfect man" and brightest star. In contrast, Hu Li wrote a poignant farewell, expressing his deepest love and telling his future self's postcard that "your Shi Tou should have gone now."
He wished for Ji Nian to find happiness with someone new, fulfill her dreams, and spend all the money he would leave her. When Ji Nian asked if he was done, Hu Li tearfully confessed that only the "present Hu Li" would read the postcard, as the "future Hu Li won't," revealing that he could only be with her for "one last period of time." Ji Nian was heartbroken, struggling to comprehend his words.
Bai Dongchen met Zhou Yifei at a café, performing a heartfelt song. He then apologized, tears streaming down his face, admitting he could no longer fulfill his promise to live only for her. He revealed that Hu Li's condition was critical, and his mission, to save Hu Li using his own chip, meant he would die. Zhou Yifei was devastated, pleading with him not to go and reminding him of his initial declaration of love.
She begged him to stay with her, but he insisted he could promise her anything except that. He then slipped his necklace onto her before walking away, leaving a weeping Zhou Yifei. Hu Li held a press conference, announcing an upcoming farewell concert with Bai Dongchen as a guest, after which he would "indefinitely retire" from the entertainment industry due to personal reasons, which he declined to explain further. After the conference, Bai Dongchen met Hu Li alone.
Bai Dongchen admitted his jealousy of Hu Li, who lived unknowingly, protected by all, while he, with his memories, was bound to live only for Hu Li. He declared that he too could now choose his fate and wanted to do one "great thing." He asked for a final hug as a gesture of their friendship before his departure. As they embraced, Bai Dongchen stunned Hu Li with an electric device, then carried his unconscious body away.
Distraught, Zhou Yifei called Ji Nian, crying uncontrollably that Bai Dongchen was going to die to save Hu Li. Ji Nian, realizing Bai Dongchen had revealed the secret she tried to keep from Hu Li, was shocked. Zhou Yifei begged her to help find a solution, and they rushed to Yang Zhe's lab. However, they arrived too late. Bai Dongchen had already completed the chip transfer. Yang Zhe then reactivated the new AI, naming it "Bai Dongchen" and reiterating its mission: "to protect Hu Li." The newly activated AI declared, "Mission completed."
Episode 24 (Ending) Recap
Zhou Yifei desperately tried to open a door, calling out for Bai Dongchen, but he remained unresponsive. Upon realizing he was gone, she collapsed. Later, she awoke to Ji Nian by her side, still distraught and wanting to see Bai Dongchen, "dead or alive." Ji Nian explained that Yang Zhe mentioned Bai Dongchen wished to remain the living Bai Dongchen in her heart, not wanting her to see him leave.
Zhou Yifei was heartbroken and angry, feeling Bai Dongchen had abandoned her for his mission to save Hu Li, and that she was worthless to him, not even deserving a farewell. Ji Nian tried to comfort her, assuring her that Bai Dongchen also didn't want to leave. Zhou Yifei cried, saying she didn't want Hu Li to die, but wished Bai Dongchen could stay with her forever.
A voiceover reminded Hu Li that his mission was the stage, and Bai Dongchen's mission was to protect him and his stage; therefore, Hu Li must continue performing so Bai Dongchen's sacrifice would not be in vain. Hu Li, feeling indebted to Bai Dongchen, appeared dejected and dispirited. Zhou Yifei confronted him, asking if he was giving up.
She told him that she didn't hate him, as Bai Dongchen had said their meeting was because of Hu Li, and he found the courage to be with her thanks to Hu Li. She expressed contentment at having had Bai Dongchen and urged Hu Li not to let Bai Dongchen's efforts be wasted, but to fulfill his wish.
Hu Li agreed to do his part, and reassured Zhou Yifei that he would not let this event affect his relationship with Ji Nian. Zhou Yifei then informed Hu Li of her plan to go abroad soon. Hu Li asked her to delay her departure for a few days to accompany Ji Nian, as he worried Ji Nian would feel guilty and needed time to accept what happened.
Zhou Yifei, teasing him about prioritizing Ji Nian, said she would consider it, while internally calling Bai Dongchen a fool. Later, Ji Nian visited Hu Li, bringing him food. They discussed Zhou Yifei's visit, and Hu Li suggested they go grocery shopping to fill their fridge and buy cookbooks so Ji Nian could make him various meals. They enjoyed a lighthearted shopping trip, even sharing a playful kiss when Hu Li claimed he needed "charging."
That evening, while watching an idol drama, Ji Nian became emotional, but Hu Li comforted her, saying that belief in being together would always lead to reunion. Hu Li then subtly suggested Ji Nian pursue her dream of studying abroad, noting that Zhou Yifei also planned to go. He thought they could support each other, promising to wait for Ji Nian in China.
Ji Nian, sensing that going abroad with Zhou Yifei would lessen Hu Li's guilt and burden, agreed to his suggestion. Ji Nian and Zhou Yifei later had a heartfelt conversation, reflecting on their newfound sisterhood, regretting their lost childhood memories but looking forward to their future together. Zhou Yifei mentioned their father wished for a family dinner before her departure, and Ji Nian readily agreed.
Ji Nian then suggested she could accompany Zhou Yifei abroad after Hu Li's farewell concert, prompting Zhou Yifei to express surprise and confusion. She revealed that Hu Li had told her to stay longer to accompany Ji Nian, realizing then that Hu Li was subtly pushing them both away. Ji Nian went to Yang Zhe, insisting on knowing the truth about Hu Li, as she knew he wouldn't send her away without reason.
Yang Zhe reluctantly revealed that Hu Li intended to save Bai Dongchen. This process involved using Hu Li to research a method to revive Bai Dongchen, which would require formatting Hu Li's memories, causing him to lose everything he remembered. Ji Nian was devastated but learned Hu Li was aware of this outcome. She immediately called Hu Li, urging him to meet her. Hu Li, having asked Fatty to finish preparing farewell gifts, left to meet Ji Nian.
He found her waiting on the beach, dressed in a wedding gown. Ji Nian expressed her dream of wearing it for her beloved and vowed to wait for him, no matter what choice he made. Hu Li, fearing he would forget her and that she would wait endlessly, voiced his concerns. Ji Nian reassured him that if he forgot, she would make him fall in love with her again.
She told him their love had brought her joy and tears, making her cherish every moment. Ji Nian declared she didn't want him to be a distant star but wanted him to return, promising to wait for him, or go find him if he didn't. Hu Li then made a pact: he asked her to wait five years, and if he hadn't returned by then, she should consider him a star in the sky and move on.
Ji Nian agreed but asked him not to tell her when he left, so she could imagine he was just away on a short trip and would be back in a day or two. Hu Li's farewell concert, titled "Without Regret," was held at Xinhai Stadium, announcing his permanent withdrawal from showbiz as he had publicly revealed his AI identity. Fans passionately pleaded for him not to leave and promised to wait for his return.
After the concert, Hu Li took Ji Nian for a "Man Tou Car" ride, playfully planning future adventures like amusement park visits, camping, and horseback riding. Later, he surprised her with a private piano concert just for her. They shared an emotional moment, wishing time would stand still, with Ji Nian promising to remember this moment and wait for him to return to complete their unfinished song and dreams.
Hu Li then secretly left while Ji Nian was asleep, as per their agreement. Five years later, Ji Nian returned to China as an internationally renowned reporter, fulfilling her promise. In a foreign city, Zhou Yifei, visibly drunk in a bar, spoke to Ji Nian on the phone, expressing her lingering despair that Bai Dongchen would never return, stating this was her last time crying for him. At that moment, Bai Dongchen appeared, playing a guitar.
They shared a tearful and deeply emotional reunion. Back in China, Ji Nian visited "Smile Cafe," now run by the married couple Luo Li and Fatty. They welcomed her warmly, reminiscing about shared times. Fatty inadvertently mentioned Hu Li, causing a moment of quiet reflection. Ji Nian silently noted that it had been five years, three months, and three days, and she still thought of Hu Li daily, holding onto the belief they would reunite.
Later, at her home, Hu Li appeared. He initially pretended to have lost his memory, asking Ji Nian who she was. Ji Nian played along, teasing him by calling herself a "well-known reporter" and him an "ordinary unpopular artist" who had fallen for her at first sight and was now her fiancé. Hu Li eventually broke character, affectionately calling her "Man Tou" and "Shi Tou," revealing he remembered everything. Overwhelmed with emotion, Ji Nian embraced him, crying tears of joy, as they shared a passionate kiss, finally reunited after their long separation.
