Facing off against the Monarch of All Demons, the Demon Slayer Bing Zhu recognized Hong Ye immediately and moved to strike. Despite his immense power, Hong Ye viewed the humans as insignificant, yet Xiao Yao threw herself between them to protect him. She confronted Bing Zhu, questioning why the Feiyu Guards had stormed Demons' Valley to massacre minor demons who had never harmed humans.

When Bing Zhu’s sword vibrated, identifying Xiao Yao as a demon, Hong Ye intervened, declaring that half-demon blood flowed through her veins. He revealed that because she had stayed in the valley and learned demonic arts, she was now imbued with demonic energy and could never return to her old life. Following the confrontation, Bing Zhu and his forces withdrew.

The surviving demons in the valley were consumed by fury, convinced that a spy had led the humans to their sanctuary. Under the subtle provocation of Heiwu, suspicion fell heavily on Xiao Yao because of the tracing powder found only on her shoes. To prove her innocence and secure the safety of the demon realm, Xiao Mu suggested that Xiao Yao retrieve the legendary demon-slaying blade from Bing Zhu.

Eager to clear her name, Xiao Yao agreed to the mission, accompanied by her friends Da Li and Luoluo. Before they departed, the trio learned a practical spell from Xiao Mu: the art of turning leaves into silver, which they believed would allow them to navigate the human world with ease. Meanwhile, Bing Zhu viewed the expedition as a failure because Hong Ye had escaped.

Although he wished to pursue the demons to satisfy a personal vendetta, his subordinate, Commander Ji Yan, urged him to retreat. Ji Yan pointed out that the Feiyu Guards existed only because of the demon threat; if every demon were eliminated, the men would lose their livelihoods and be unable to support their families. Reluctantly, Bing Zhu ordered his men back to Pingjiang Prefecture.

Xiao Yao and her friends arrived at the gates of Pingjiang to find high security, with masters using holy water to screen for demons. When their attempt to bribe a guard by claiming to be relatives of the local Prefect was nearly exposed, Xiao Yao scattered handfuls of silver on the ground. The resulting chaotic scramble for the money allowed the three of them to slip into the city unnoticed.

Once inside, they indulged in human delicacies and bought fine new clothes, though their lavish spending drew unwanted attention. Hoping to soften Hong Ye’s resentment toward mankind, Xiao Yao used her jade pendant to summon him to the city. She led him through the bustling streets to taste local delicacies like tea soup. Hong Ye followed her with reserved patience, though he remained troubled by memories of his past lives.

Their walk was interrupted when they saw Feiyu Guards bullying a woman while boasting about the massacre in the valley. Incensed, Xiao Yao tried to use elemental spells to scare them. Although she mistakenly cast fire before wind due to a lack of practice, Hong Ye secretly assisted her from the shadows, creating a magical storm that sent the guards fleeing. Afterward, Xiao Yao bought Hong Ye a new robe to replace his soiled one.

Despite the brief connection, Hong Ye warned her that the rift between humans and demons was deepening and told her not to summon him again unless her life was in danger. As the demons explored the city, Bing Zhu began investigating a string of mysterious disappearances. He visited a mother whose daughter had vanished in the blink of an eye while the mother was fetching soup. Sensing something supernatural, Bing Zhu decided to stake out the location.

At the same time, the powerful Qionghua Sect, led by Jin Muqing, arrived in the city to join the hunt for demons, further complicating the situation. Deciding it was time for serious business, Xiao Yao disguised herself as a man and headed to a prominent local pavilion. While Luoluo befriended a young servant girl named Yueyue and shared food with her, Xiao Yao made a grand display of wealth to the madam and the guests.

She announced a massive bounty: anyone who could bring her Bing Zhu’s demon-slaying blade to "ward off evil" at her home would be rewarded with a cartload of gold. Greed soon took hold of the local officials. Prefect Liu and Commander Ji Yan both approached Bing Zhu with fabricated stories about sick parents needing the blade’s power for protection. Seeing through their lies and the rumors of the wealthy young eccentric, Bing Zhu decided to visit the pavilion himself to confront the person seeking his weapon.
