Xiao Yao, still under the influence of alcohol, pointed to Hong Ye’s heart and claimed to see the three layers of his personality: duplicity, insincerity, and a stubborn obsession with saving face. She urged him to live more freely as an "old demon" and enjoy life's fulfillment. Hong Ye was struck by her insight, questioning if she was truly the human princess, Ning’an.
Xiao Yao admitted she had changed and now possessed a strong desire to protect the people she cared about. Growing weary of Ning’an’s previous attempts to sneak out of the palace, the Emperor issued a decree. He branded her behavior a poor example and ordered her into strict confinement to study ancient texts and practice swordsmanship. Xiao Yao found the daily routine incredibly stifling.
Seeing her boredom, Hong Ye brought her a branch of plum blossoms from a frozen forest, noting that their fragrance thrived despite the bitter cold. Xiao Yao tried to use the opportunity to elicit a "tear essence" from him by reading the tragic legend of "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai". Although she was moved to tears by the story, Hong Ye remained indifferent, dismissively claiming the book was merely a human fabrication.
During her mandatory sword practice, Xiao Yao faced an instructor who mocked her lack of progress. Dropping the facade of a frail princess, she used her actual combat skills to easily overwhelm and terrify him, forcing the instructor to flee to the imperial physicians in a panic. When Xiao Yao nearly slipped during the exchange, Hong Ye instinctively caught her sword with his bare hand to steady her.
Xiao Yao was horrified by his recklessness, scolding him for using his flesh to stop a blade. Though Hong Ye insisted his spiritual power protected him, he was touched by her genuine concern. The palace maids noticed that the princess had become much more vibrant since she started spending time alone in her chambers. While Xiao Yao and Hong Ye were watching a beautiful sunset from the palace roof, they were discovered by the Feiyu Guards.
To protect Xiao Yao from being implicated in his trespass, Hong Ye played the part of the villain, pretending to take the princess hostage. He threatened to kill her if the guards moved, effectively forcing a standoff that allowed them to escape the palace together. In the aftermath, a guard named Wang Hong took advantage of the Emperor’s fury. He proposed a plan to expand the Feiyu Guard and hunt down the demon lair.
The Emperor promoted Wang Hong to Deputy Demon Slayer, giving him a one-month deadline to clear the demon threat and rescue the princess. Now free from her confinement, Xiao Yao enjoyed a blissful day with Hong Ye in a secluded plum garden. They engaged in a playful snow fight and built a snowman together. Hong Ye insisted on giving the snowman horns, calling it a "Snow Demon" to make it look more intimidating.
As a parting gift, he used his magic to plant a plum blossom mark on Xiao Yao, promising it would never wither and would allow him to find her anywhere. Xiao Yao cherished the day, noting that it was likely the happiest day the princess had ever known. The duo eventually made their way into the city, where Xiao Yao introduced Hong Ye to human delicacies like candy figurines and plum cakes.
She spoke of her hope for a world where humans and demons could live in peace, suggesting that most ordinary people simply wanted stability. However, their outing was shattered by news of a demon attack. They followed the commotion to a clinic where a servant named Liu had allegedly gone mad and murdered the mistress. Nearby, the Jin family claimed their son's bride had been snatched away by a demon on their wedding night.
Sensing a mystery, Xiao Yao and Hong Ye made a bet to see who could uncover the truth behind their respective cases first. Xiao Yao visited the clinic and confronted Dr. Zhang. She sat for a consultation and claimed her "conscience" had gone missing. She then exposed the doctor's secret: he had risen from a lowly street doctor only through the support of his wealthy father-in-law.
To protect his status after his wife discovered his affair with his father-in-law’s concubine, Dr. Zhang had systematically drugged his servant, Liu, with a tonic designed to cause hallucinations. He then locked the unstable servant in a room with his wife, leading to the fatal tragedy which he blamed on a demon. Xiao Yao produced the incriminating prescription and berated him for his heartless betrayal.
Meanwhile, Hong Ye won his part of the bet by finding the missing bride, Xiao Cui. She revealed that she had never been kidnapped; instead, she had conspired with the Jin family to fake her disappearance. Desperate to escape a family that only valued sons, she sought a life of freedom in spiritual cultivation. Xiao Yao and Hong Ye then confronted the Jin family as they prepared to flee the city with the bride's dowry.
The Jins were terrified, assuming the pair were immortal demon hunters. However, Hong Ye revealed he knew their true identities as chipmunk demons. Rather than punishing them, he affirmed his role as the Monarch of All Demons, declaring his duty was to protect the safety of his own kind.
