Practice Daughter Recap

Episode 1 Recap

Under the light of the full moon, Mei Yushan, the daughter of a prominent family, and Douzi, a street urchin, stood before an octagonal pavilion in a large estate. They believed this spot, matching the time and location of a past event, was key to switching their bodies back. Despite various attempts, they remained in each other's forms. What intricate circumstances led these two young women to this desperate endeavor? Their story began one year prior, on the same night.

A year ago, the capital's Museum received a new collection of antiques. Crown Prince Nangong Yao was assigned to inspect them. Xing Shi supervised the museum's security arrangements, while the manager, Mr. Zhang, scurried about, anxious to avoid any displeasure from the Crown Prince. Outside the museum, Douzi and her three adoptive fathers, who had been casing the place, quickly concealed themselves behind a straw mat upon seeing a sedan chair arrive.

The chair carried Mei Yushan, who arrived shortly after the Crown Prince. As Mr. Zhang briefed Nangong Yao on the museum's renovation progress, Mei Yushan focused on admiring the diverse exhibits, seemingly indifferent to the rumors of the prince's handsome appearance. Her maid, Nanbei, however, kept reminding her to make a good impression before entering the palace academy. Nangong Yao displayed a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, pausing and expressing discontent whenever he noticed anything asymmetrical in the exhibits.

Mr. Zhang busied himself trying to accommodate the prince's preferences. Mei Yushan entered the main exhibition hall first, followed by the prince. She stepped behind a screen as Mr. Zhang explained the hall's security system: forty-nine hidden silk threads connected to bells, ensuring that any intruder touching a thread would trigger an alarm and find escape nearly impossible. Douzi and her three fathers, eavesdropping, each took out a pair of scissors and planned to split up.

In the center of the hall stood a clay sculpture. Mr. Zhang only knew it was a trophy from the Shengdong war years ago and couldn't provide more details. Mei Yushan stepped forward and identified the sculpture as a Domestic Cat Monster, sharing information about its cultural significance from her readings. Nangong Yao found her explanation dull and instead spent time fixating on her asymmetrical hairpin before leaving the hall. Douzi and her fathers stealthily entered the hall.

The First Father acted as a lookout, while the Second and Third Fathers worked on disabling the bells. Douzi secured their target: the Moon Spirit Pearl, described earlier as a rare extraterrestrial meteorite grain from Shengdong culture, salvaged and lost over time. As they prepared to leave, one of them accidentally brushed a silk thread.

As the bell was about to fall, Douzi held the thread taut while the Second and Third Fathers quickly caught the suspended bell, narrowly avoiding detection. Later that evening, the Crown Prince hosted a banquet for the young ladies soon to enter the palace academy. Several eager candidates vied for his attention. Su Ruomei, daughter of General Su Shenhai, attempted a dance, but instead attracted a swarm of mosquitoes, creating a comical scene.

Zhuang Yangyang, daughter of Director of the Secretariat Zhuang Fucheng, was the next to perform but tripped over a red carpet. Douzi and her fathers, preparing to leave, were stopped by Eunuch Song and ordered to tend to the prince's brazier. The three fathers quickly hid. Inside, Huang Yuanyuan, daughter of General Huang Qi, demonstrated her family's martial art, Huang's Fist, much to the prince's bewildered amusement. Only Mei Yushan remained standing still, refusing to actively seek attention.

Grand Tutor Zhou Liang arrived to meet with the prince and discuss disaster relief efforts. After adding charcoal to the brazier, Douzi was then instructed to pour wine for the prince. Standing beside him, she recalled stories of the palace's immense wealth, viewing the prince as a walking treasure. The Grand Tutor suggested the prince select consorts from the palace academy candidates soon to ensure the continuation of the royal lineage.

Mei Yushan was subtly pushed towards the prince by her maid and stumbled, causing her hairpin to fall. With the asymmetry removed, Nangong Yao finally seemed more at ease. Douzi poured the prince his wine. Moments later, the prince collapsed, poisoned. As chaos erupted in the courtyard, a lunar eclipse began. Amidst the confusion, Douzi attempted to escape, but a guard grabbed her. She struggled, throwing the Moon Spirit Pearl at the guard, desperate to get away.

Episode 2 Recap

Mei Yushan and Douzi fell into a pit and swapped bodies due to the Moon Spirit Pearl, though neither fully grasped this at first. Douzi, now in Mei Yushan's body, woke up first. Finding herself agile and free, she left the area. She soon saw her three fathers – Big Head Yu, Second Father, and Third Father – running towards her carrying an unconscious woman, who was in fact Mei Yushan, now in Douzi's body.

Douzi in Mei Yushan's body stood before them, causing them to wonder who she was. The assassin Que suddenly appeared, demanding that Big Head Yu hand over the Moon Spirit Pearl. Douzi, using quick thinking in Mei Yushan's body, told Que to go away, threatening to scream, which led to a tense standoff where mutual death was threatened. Just then, Crown Prince Nangong Yao arrived.

To avoid revealing their identities and predicament, Douzi's fathers quickly pushed Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, towards the Prince. Douzi, noticing the Prince's jade pendant and desiring it, pretended to slip and tried to grab it, wrapping her arms around his clothes. Guard Xing Shi promptly appeared, ready to investigate. Prince Nangong Yao questioned "Miss Mei" (Douzi) about her whereabouts during the lunar eclipse and whether she had poisoned his wine.

Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, repeatedly explained that she had slipped and fallen into a large pit, denying any poisoning and blaming it on his sharp-voiced eunuch. The Prince seemed skeptical, finding her explanation unbelievable. Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, made several more attempts to grab his jade pendant by claiming her hand slipped, but the Prince evaded her each time. Finally, she fell heavily to the ground.

The Prince commented on her apparent clumsiness and asked why the Grand Chancellor's Residence didn't provide her with non-slip shoes. Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, was confused by the mention of the Grand Chancellor's Residence. The Prince concluded that "Mei Yushan" was either truly injured or pretending to be simple-minded, noting her vastly different demeanor in public and private, which he described as vulgar.

As the Prince prepared to leave, Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, insisted they clear things up, grabbing him. They began to wrestle, rolling on the ground. During the struggle, the Prince's backside was pricked by thorns from the roses. Guard Xing Shi reported that he had thoroughly searched the area and found no anomalies. Suddenly, a dart materialized out of thin air. Xing Shi blocked it, protecting the Prince from harm.

Amidst the chaos, Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, successfully secured the Prince's jade pendant. Feeling pleased with herself, she then realized that the Moon Spirit Pearl was missing. She guessed it must have fallen onto the Prince during their scuffle. Maid Cui entered the garden, calling for her "Miss." Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, immediately took off running. Cui and the guards chased after her. After running in a wide circle, she was finally cornered by Cui and the guards.

Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, quickly grabbed Cui, holding her hostage and ordering the guards to back off, threatening to harm Cui. Seeing "Mei Yushan" acting erratically and seemingly out of her mind, the guards decided to subdue her, knocking her unconscious before taking her back to the Grand Chancellor's Residence. Seventeen years earlier, Big Head Yu, Second Father, and Third Father robbed an escort agency.

Expecting a chest full of gold, they were surprised to find an infant girl inside. Unable to bring themselves to abandon her, they decided to raise her themselves and named her Douzi. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan, now in Douzi's body, woke up in the presence of the three men. Disoriented and seeing their disheveled appearance, she loudly demanded to know who they were and why they were there.

Big Head Yu and his brothers, seeing "Douzi" acting so strangely, assumed she was delirious from the fright she received at the museum the previous day. Mei Yushan insisted they were mocking her and threatened to report them to the authorities and have them imprisoned. The fathers worried her mind was damaged or that she was possessed, suggesting various remedies like pinching fingers or using black dog blood.

Mei Yushan mentioned needing her hands for the guqin, which the fathers dismissed, claiming her hands looked like they were used for picking cotton. They concluded she was either brain-damaged or possessed. Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, woke up in the Grand Chancellor's Residence with Cui already waiting to help her dress and prepare for entering the palace study.

Douzi, used to rough habits, accidentally drank the salt water intended for gargling and the soapy water meant for washing hands, much to Cui's confusion. When she looked in the mirror, she was startled to see herself in Mei Yushan's attire. At the same moment, Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, also saw her reflection and realized she was in Douzi's body. Now aware of the body swap, they had no choice but to navigate their new circumstances.

Prince Nangong Yao inquired whether Mei Yushan was included in the list of candidates for the palace study arranged by the Empress. Butler Nanbei confirmed that Miss Mei was indeed the first candidate chosen by the Empress. The next day, Mei Yushan (actually Douzi in her body) went to the Guanyue Pavilion in the courtyard to relax, finding snacks already laid out. Without hesitation, she began to eat greedily, proclaiming that eating was the most important thing.

Prince Nangong Yao arrived and observed her unusual behavior with surprise. He noted how different she was from the highly cultured reputation Mei Yushan was known for, finding her strange and "vulgar" based on her actions the previous night. He questioned her about holding her maid hostage, suggesting she had a split personality.

Douzi in Mei's body claimed it was because people prevented her from going home and she was frightened, threatening to "kill" him if he brought up "last night" again, causing a humorous misunderstanding as he thought she meant the throwing knives, while she thought he meant his injured backside. She then told him he looked better when he smiled. Nangong Yao, still puzzled by her behavior, eventually left.

Leaving the Grand Chancellor's Residence, Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) stealthily made her way back to her fathers' dwelling in Black Dog Alley. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan (in Douzi's body), uncomfortable being escorted home in a sedan chair ("a mountain boar can't eat fine bran," she thought), stopped at Huiju Grocery Store in Black Dog Alley, instructing her attendant to wait outside. It was there, in the alley, that the two swapped individuals encountered each other.

Douzi (in Mei's body) confronted Mei (in Douzi's body), accusing her of using witchcraft and demanding her body back. Mei (in Douzi's body) retorted that Douzi was the one occupying "her" body. Second Father arrived and, confused, asked Mei (in Douzi's body) who had occupied "her" body. Douzi (in Mei's body) told him it didn't concern him. They continued to argue about the cause of the swap after the fall.

As they talked, they both suddenly remembered the Moon Spirit Pearl. Douzi (in Mei's body) admitted she had lost the pearl, which immediately upset the fathers, who had stolen it. Douzi (in Mei's body) accused Mei (in Douzi's body) of haunting her by following her there. Mei (in Douzi's body) clarified she had come looking for her. Big Head Yu (First Father) misunderstood Mei (in Douzi's body)'s presence, believing she was romantically interested in him.

Douzi (in Mei's body), annoyed, revealed personal details about her fathers, such as Big Head Yu's hemorrhoids and Third Father's failed attempts at writing love letters, proving her identity. The fathers finally realized she was truly Douzi, despite her appearance. They were astonished and confused about how she had swapped bodies with the other girl. Mei (in Douzi's body) explained that the body swap had occurred after they fell. The fathers were amazed by this revelation, especially considering the lost Moon Spirit Pearl. Second Father reappeared, further adding to the commotion.

Episode 3 Recap

Douzi struggled to explain the body swap to her three fathers, who finally grasped what had happened. Suddenly, the assassin Que burst into the room. She seized Douzi, demanding the Moon Spirit Pearl. Unaware of the body swap, Que believed she held Douzi. Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, pulled out a jade pendant, claiming it was far more valuable than the pearl. Que insisted she only cared about the pearl.

She then threw a smoke bomb and escaped with her hostage. Learning it was actually Mei Yushan who had been abducted, the fathers remained unconcerned, advising Douzi to just let the situation stand since their bodies were swapped. However, Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, was distraught. She felt responsible for Mei Yushan's safety and vowed to rescue her. Meanwhile, to investigate the recent disappearances of women and children, Nangong Yao was staking out the front of the Relief Organization.

After observing for some time, he instructed Dongxi to buy two strings of sugary hawthorn berries and tie red strings on them before knocking on the gate. When the gate opened and a man saw the sugary hawthorn berries, he invited Nangong Yao and his companions inside. The assassin Que, still holding Douzi captive, had also followed Nangong Yao and secretly entered the compound, intending to assassinate him. Mei Yushan, who was walking behind, found the gate closed.

She then climbed over the courtyard wall to get inside. Nangong Yao was led to a room filled with children dressed as vagrants. The superintendent explained they were survivors of a recent earthquake who had lost their families, assuring Nangong Yao that selling them wouldn't cause trouble. Nangong Yao asked if the authorities had investigated. The superintendent claimed the officials were preoccupied with the influx of refugees and that this service was a way to help the government.

As they spoke, Nangong Yao spotted Mei Yushan looking around the courtyard. He approached her and asked what she was doing there. Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, hesitated to reveal her true purpose. Suddenly remembering the lost Moon Spirit Pearl, she asked Nangong Yao if he had seen a small, dark, unattractive pearl.

Nangong Yao recalled his own jade pendant and asked Mei Yushan in return if she had seen it, noting that the pendant he had carried for years had gone missing the previous night and was replaced by a pearl. Mei Yushan admitted she didn't know about the jade pendant and urged him to return the pearl. Nangong Yao insisted he would only do so after finding his pendant.

While this exchange was happening, Que, having locked Douzi in a warehouse, returned to the courtyard to assassinate Nangong Yao. Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, coincidentally tried to soak Nangong Yao's clothes with a bucket of water, hoping to make him remove his garments so she could check for the pearl. However, both times she threw a bucket, Que's darts intercepted it.

Nangong Yao noticed the attack and lured Que towards him, then subdued her while shielding Mei Yushan behind him. Nanbei quickly investigated the Relief Organization's activities, discovering they were operating illegal human trafficking under the guise of charity, supported by officials from the Ministry of Personnel. Nangong Yao ordered everyone involved to be arrested. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan, still wandering the courtyard, found Douzi locked in the warehouse. After freeing her, the two left the Relief Organization together.

Douzi explained that the next day was the day they were to enter the palace academy. If Mei Yushan didn't go, the entire Grand Chancellor's Residence would be implicated. Since they couldn't switch back immediately, Mei Yushan had to pretend to be Douzi and enter the palace in her place, hoping to find the Moon Spirit Pearl there and eventually switch back. Douzi offered to accompany Mei Yushan into the palace disguised as her maid to ensure her safety.

Douzi's fathers overheard this and gave their opinions, but Douzi insisted on their plan to retrieve the pearl and switch back. Mei Yushan reluctantly agreed to the arrangement, making Douzi promise they would switch back and she would leave the palace immediately after finding the pearl. The next morning, the fake Mei Yushan (actually Douzi in Mei Yushan's body) bid farewell to the Grand Chancellor and his wife, eager to leave for the palace.

She even left her maid Cui behind despite Cui's tears. Douzi hid in the carriage, posing as a attendant maid. The Grand Chancellor and his wife were surprised by their daughter's unusual haste. Elsewhere, Nangong Yao visited his childhood friend Bai Ye at the Astronomical Bureau.

As the Imperial Astronomer, Bai Ye had long ago predicted that the Crown Prince would fall in love with the Princess of Shengdong and become an Emperor who would bring about the downfall of the nation. Because of this prophecy, Bai Ye had been confined to the Astronomical Bureau for sixteen years. Nangong Yao questioned the possibility of this prediction, but Bai Ye insisted it was accurate, urging Nangong Yao not to reveal it.

News of Bai Ye's prophecy and the dire prediction about the Crown Prince was already starting to spread outside the Bureau despite an imperial decree forbidding the spread of rumors under penalty of death. The Empress, aware that Nangong Yao had just raided the home of Wang Shujuan from the Ministry of Personnel upon his return to court, cautioned him against being too aggressive.

She advised him to temporarily step away from state affairs and spend time studying at Chongwen Academy with the new young ladies entering the palace. At the palace academy, Eunuch Song greeted the newly arrived young ladies. He explained that the academy was opening its doors to female students thanks to the Empress's open-mindedness. He stressed that inside the academy, status didn't matter, and strict adherence to rules was required, otherwise, they would be expelled.

He then announced the first task: having their portraits painted to be hung alongside those of the princes for posterity. The young ladies were given scholar's attire to change into and instructed to place wheat ears on either side of their heads. Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, found the scholar's attire ugly and uncomfortable, complaining that it didn't fit. She moved around, making it difficult for the painter assigned to her.

Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, offered to paint her mistress, recalling Eunuch Song's earlier statement that anyone could paint. Eunuch Song, surprised by the maid's forwardness and eloquence, initially hesitated but eventually allowed it, warning them about the consequences if the painting displeased the Empress. Douzi proceeded to paint Mei Yushan while Mei Yushan complained about the itching from the wheat ears and the stiffness of the clothes. Another student, Zhuang Yangyang, commented on Mei Yushan's posture.

Episode 4 Recap

While Mei Yushan slept slumped on the table, Douzi began painting. The portrait she created was of herself, yet it was presented as Mei Yushan's work. At the Chongwen Academy, the Grand Tutor was lecturing, but the princes appeared sleepy. When asked about how a ruler should govern, Nangong Pin, whose mind was occupied with the new female students, talked extensively about how to treat a wife, frustrating the Grand Tutor. Mei Yushan and Douzi arrived at the Chongwen Academy.

The students were disappointed to hear that the Crown Prince had already begun assisting in court affairs and no longer attended the academy. Mei Yushan, feeling mischievous, played a trick on three other young ladies, telling them the Crown Prince had just passed by. As the three scrambled to see him, Mei Yushan tripped them, causing them to fall. Just as Mei Yushan was enjoying her prank, Nangong Yao suddenly appeared.

Eunuch Song announced that the Crown Prince would temporarily stop his court duties and study at the Chongwen Academy for a while. The princes and the girls were overjoyed, especially the three who had fallen, as they vied to sit next to him. Seeing that the princes had no interest in studying, the Grand Tutor left the academy, allowing them to arrange seats freely. Everyone wanted to sit beside the Crown Prince.

Eunuch Song set up a drawing with two colored bamboo slips, promising the winners the seats next to Nangong Yao. Nangong Pin drew one red slip. Mei Yushan, determined to get closer to the Crown Prince and reclaim the Moon Spirit Pearl, cheated to obtain the other one. After they were seated, Nangong Yao ordered everyone else to leave the study hall, keeping only Mei Yushan.

Nangong Yao confronted Mei Yushan, noting her previous attempts to approach him at the Museum, her appearance at the Relief Organization, and now her deliberate closeness at the academy, made obvious by her cheating. He demanded to know her true intentions. Mei Yushan stated she had difficulties and the Moon Spirit Pearl was crucial to her, asking for its swift return. Nangong Yao criticized her lack of decorum and self-respect before leaving the room angrily.

Mei Yushan argued back, questioning why he was at the Relief Organization himself and suggesting he was trying to approach "her". Several portraits were brought before the Empress for evaluation. The Empress immediately favored the portrait presented as Mei Yushan's work. Observing the detailed depiction, she concluded the subject must be a refined and dignified lady, noting the slight calluses on the fingers (indicating qin practice) and the posture (indicating dance training).

Eunuch Song knew the painting was actually done by Douzi, the maid, but did not reveal the truth to the Empress. Since her portrait was deemed the best, Mei Yushan and Douzi were assigned a superior chamber, which was luxuriously decorated. Mei Yushan was astonished by the opulence. Douzi initially insisted Mei Yushan sleep on the floor, saying she was used to sleeping alone and couldn't share a bed. Mei Yushan agreed to 'suffer a little.'

However, remembering her own body was experiencing this discomfort, Douzi relented and agreed they could share the bed. The room contained many precious items. Mei Yushan marveled at their value, noting items worth dozens or even hundreds of taels, far more than anything she had encountered. Douzi warned her that stealing in the palace was a capital offense. Mei Yushan recounted how her "daddies" had been tricked into stealing the Moon Spirit Pearl by a woman who challenged their reputation.

Douzi, now in the role of the 'maid,' ordered Mei Yushan to clean the room. Mei Yushan, unfamiliar with chores and seeing the valuable items, deliberately broke several vases and other pieces while pretending to clean, causing Douzi distress over the lost wealth. Seeing the destruction, Douzi quickly rescinded her cleaning orders. Mei Yushan, having learned the Crown Prince resided in the Eastern Palace, planned to retrieve the pearl.

When she saw Nangong Yao leaving the Eastern Palace with Nanbei, she approached the main gate. Spotting Eunuch Song nearby with a plate of fruit, she quickly struck him. Eunuch Song cried out, realizing someone was trying to take his things. Unable to get what she wanted, Mei Yushan fled. Eunuch Song called for guards and described his assailant as a thin person in green clothes. Commander Fei arrived and was given the description to pursue the culprit.

Meanwhile, Eunuch Song brought Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) before Nangong Yao, explaining that Mei Yushan was not in her chamber and he had brought her maid instead. Nangong Yao recognized Douzi as the "palace maid" or "female thief" from the night at the Museum.

Douzi explained that she had been accompanying her young lady (Mei Yushan) at the museum and was mistaken for a palace official, and her young lady had encouraged her to go along with it to show support. Nangong Yao questioned why she hadn't clarified the situation at the time and doubted Mei Yushan's supposed respect given her behavior in class. He asked about Mei Yushan's current whereabouts.

Separately, in the Tianji Mansion, Nangong Yao reflected on the female thief from over ten years ago, frustrated that he still could not clearly remember her face, wondering if his calculations were wrong. In another part of the palace, children spoke about growing up to protect the royal family and the Shengdong country, just before the Empress fainted.

Episode 5 Recap

After Mei Yushan was not found in Chongwen Academy, Douzi was summoned to the Crown Prince Nangong Yao. Xing Shi carefully observed Douzi's face and found it remarkably familiar, bearing a striking resemblance to the Queen of Shengdong from several years prior. He recalled how the Queen had encouraged him to be a warrior. Years later, seeing nearly the same face stirred his memory. Meanwhile, three young ladies, including Huang Yuanyuan, were searching everywhere for the Crown Prince.

They found him in Mei Yushan's room and were overcome with jealousy. Huang Yuanyuan forcefully burst open the door, only to find that Mei Yushan was not inside. Instead, it was her maid, Douzi, being questioned, which slightly eased their tension. At the Astronomical Bureau, Bai Ye was struggling to divine the appearance of the Crown Princess. Just then, Mei Yushan, having climbed over the wall to hide, stumbled inside and ended up standing next to a painting.

She seemed to fit the image perfectly. Fei Kuai arrived at the Bureau looking for Mei Yushan. Bai Ye helped conceal her presence, and as Fei Kuai remained waiting outside, Bai Ye graciously offered Mei Yushan hospitality. Mei Yushan decided to stay and enjoyed a large meal. While eating, she described the supposed preferences of her "father," including roast chicken feet, haggis, and particularly extra-smelly stinky tofu from Ms. Xing's stand.

Bai Ye, unaware that the person in front of him was not the real Mei Yushan, was surprised to hear the Grand Chancellor had such unconventional tastes and often visited the market. That evening, Mei Yushan persuaded Bai Ye to teach her about observing celestial phenomena. He showed her the Big Dipper, explaining how its position relates to the seasons, and pointed out prominent stars like Arcturus and Spica. Nangong Yao reprimanded the three ladies for their impulsiveness.

He instructed them to focus on their palace studies, maintain a distance of at least three "chi" when speaking to him, and warned that any violation would be considered insubordination, including damaging palace property like doors. Finally, he inquired about Mei Yushan's whereabouts, but Douzi could not answer. Later, Nangong Yao summoned Douzi to his chambers again.

Having observed her throughout the day, he noted that the maid spoke very much like Mei Yushan, while the real Mei Yushan seemed to have become a completely different person since entering the palace. Nangong Yao produced the Moon Spirit Pearl and asked about its significance to Mei Yushan. Douzi explained it was a precious item her lady had carried since childhood and intended to give to her future husband. Nangong Yao then returned the pearl to Douzi.

Back at the Astronomical Bureau, Mei Yushan spoke casually about the Moon Spirit Pearl with Bai Ye. Bai Ye became serious, stating that the pearl was an object of ill fortune and must be destroyed immediately if found. Hearing that her maid had been taken to the Eastern Palace for questioning, Mei Yushan became frantic and decided she must go there at once.

As it was late and the Eastern Palace was under strict guard, Bai Ye intervened and used his privilege to escort her inside. Douzi was just leaving with the box containing the pearl when Mei Yushan rushed in. Nangong Yao, suspicious of the timing of Mei Yushan's sudden appearance, questioned her further and asked her to open the box to verify if its contents were the item he had misplaced.

Mei Yushan hesitated, fearing that if Bai Ye saw the pearl, she might be trapped in Douzi's body permanently. She tried to quickly usher Douzi away without opening the box. Nangong Yao ordered them to stop. Faced with no other option, Mei Yushan kicked the box away, intending to secretly retrieve the pearl afterward and return an empty box to Nangong Yao. The box fell, but to Mei Yushan's dismay, it contained no pearl.

Mei Yushan accused Nangong Yao of not being sincere in returning the item, while Nangong Yao suspected Mei Yushan had successfully retrieved the pearl through her actions. The confrontation escalated, and they parted ways unhappily. Later, back in his room, Dongxi presented the Moon Spirit Pearl to Nangong Yao. Dongxi revealed he had secretly swapped the pearl when Mei Yushan was acting tricky earlier.

Nangong Yao did not blame Dongxi but found the actions of both Mei Yushan and her maid peculiar, sensing there was a hidden matter at play. He ordered the pearl's origin to be investigated. Elsewhere, Xing Shi told Que that Mei Yushan's maid bore a striking resemblance to the Shengdong Empress Li. He suspected the maid was very likely Princess Yueying, who had gone missing years ago.

Xing Shi speculated why she would enter the palace disguised as a maid, wondering if it was tied to a prophecy about approaching the Crown Prince, though he found this unlikely given the princess's age when she disappeared. He instructed Que to enter the palace immediately and closely monitor the maid's movements.

Having secured the cooperation of Zhongwu General Su Shenhai, Xing Shi arranged for Que to pose as Su Ruomei's maid to gain proximity to Douzi and confirm her identity. Que was warned not to contact Xing Shi for minor matters and to be cautious, as Su Ruomei was unaware of her true identity. Que encountered Fei Kuai while with Su Ruomei. Fei Kuai, finding Que suspicious, attempted to apprehend her but mistakenly grabbed Su Ruomei before apologizing.

After the encounter, Su Ruomei sternly warned Que that regardless of how she had gained her father's trust to enter the palace, she must obey Su Ruomei while serving her. She threatened punishment for future transgressions. Back in their room, Mei Yushan drew a pig face on Douzi, blaming her for the failure to retrieve the pearl. Douzi complained about Mei Yushan's changing decisions, specifically regarding their sleeping arrangements.

Douzi later examined a birthmark on her shoulder, which her "Third Father" had always found strange. She noticed its pattern bore a resemblance to the Moon Spirit Pearl. An investigation into the pearl revealed it was a fragment from a fallen star, known as the Moon Spirit Pearl, a treasure of Shengdong said to have aided the Empress during the difficult birth of the princess. The pearl disappeared after Shengdong was destroyed.

Nangong Yao questioned why such a Shengdong artifact was in Mei Yushan's possession and found her intense interest, coupled with her maid's strangeness, indicative of a hidden cause. He continued the investigation. Additionally, it was reported to Nangong Yao that someone had absconded from the Relief Organization, and the number of victims was increasing, straining resources.

Nangong Yao ordered the digging of canals and the immediate recruitment of workers from among the victims, enabling them to use their skills and earn a living in the capital rather than solely relying on relief food. Later, on the first day of studies at Chongwen Academy, while others arrived through the main entrance, Mei Yushan and Douzi were seemingly late. Mei Yushan urged Douzi to hurry, and they entered the academy by climbing over a wall, narrowly avoiding detection.

Episode 6 Recap

Mei Yushan and Douzi were running late for their first day at Chongwen Academy. Douzi blamed Mei Yushan's lack of punctuality. Finding the main gate closed, Mei Yushan suggested they climb the wall. As Douzi stepped on Mei Yushan's shoulder and reached the wall, Nangong Yao and Nangong Pin arrived at the gate. Nangong Yao cleared his throat, startling the two girls, who tumbled to the ground.

Nangong Yao remarked he thought thieves were trying to break into the academy, then realized it was the Grand Chancellor's daughter and her maid. Douzi explained they were forced to climb because the gate wasn't opened. Nangong Yao offered to help them over the wall as compensation for scaring them. Mei Yushan and Douzi thanked them sincerely.

After helping them get over, Nangong Yao revealed he had a key and entered through the main gate, leading Mei Yushan to realize he had teased them on purpose. On the first day, the Little Book Boy announced the schedule: jurisprudence and etiquette classes in the morning, followed by an entrance examination in the afternoon. The Grand Tutor began the jurisprudence class, explaining the importance of understanding laws for future officials.

He read from classic texts, but the lecture was dry, and the students seemed bored. Noticing their lack of engagement, the Grand Tutor decided to tell a story about Li Kui, the writer of The Canon of Laws. He recounted how Li Kui, after misjudging a case years earlier, discovered his error during a new trial and, bound by his own legal principles, wrote a suicide note and took his own life for the wrongful execution of an innocent person.

The story sparked discussion among the students, who questioned whether laws made by humans could be flawed. Nangong Yao offered his perspective, stating that laws, applied to the people, should also originate from them, gathering collective wisdom for perfection. The Grand Tutor agreed this emphasized the need for careful application and continuous refinement of laws. The next class was etiquette, taught by Liu Jiao, also known as Madam Liu, the Vice Minister of Rites. The lesson focused on composure.

Students were instructed to line up and practice maintaining a straight face while others tried to distract them. Liu Jiao stressed the importance of this skill for upholding the reputation of imperial men and stated success was mandatory. Nangong Yao participated, enduring various attempts from other students to make him laugh or react, ultimately passing the test of keeping his composure. Following the classes, an announcement was made regarding the entrance examination scheduled for the next day.

It was revealed that Princess An from a friendly state would also participate, coming to Jixi Kingdom for a visit and hearing about the exam. Students were urged to take it seriously, write clearly, and leave no blanks, as random answers would incur a heavy penalty. The news caused apprehension among the students, who were aware of Princess An's renowned intelligence.

Some students, including Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang, approached Princess An, hoping she would help them pass and avoid punishment, especially concerned about losing to the newcomer Mei Yushan. Princess An declined, stating that relying on last-minute help wouldn't compensate for not studying diligently beforehand. The entrance examination commenced the next day, consisting of five questions, one per paper, with no restriction on the answer format, to be assessed by the Grand Tutor.

Nangong Yao finished very quickly, commenting that the questions were too simple. Mei Yushan, however, hadn't started writing for some time, prompting remarks from other students. She declared she would write immediately and that her answers would be no worse than anyone else's. The Grand Tutor reviewed the papers, praising Nangong Yao's answers for their grandeur and rigor, fitting for a future ruler. He found Princess An's paper uniquely insightful, calling it unprecedented. The other students' papers were deemed acceptable.

Finally, the Grand Tutor requested Mei Yushan's papers. As he read her answers aloud, it became clear she had not taken the exam seriously. Her answers were nonsensical and included drawings. For instance, when asked about Wang Lun in the line "The Peach Blossom Spring is a thousand feet deep, but not as deep as Wang Lun's affection for me," she speculated he must have jumped off a cliff.

When asked about the famous saying "Husband and wife are originally birds of the same forest, but when disaster strikes, they fly their separate ways," she suggested it meant neither spouse was a good person and they lacked loyalty. Her bizarre interpretations and drawings caused the other students to burst into laughter, and the Grand Tutor was so shocked he called for an imperial physician.

As punishment for disrespecting the academy and disrupting the exam, Mei Yushan was ordered to copy books every day after class for half a month, with Nangong Yao supervising her work. Mei Yushan found the task incredibly difficult. Nangong Yao was a strict supervisor, sometimes forcing her to copy even when it was past dinner time and both were hungry.

When Mei Yushan presented her work, full of typos and skipped sections, Nangong Yao meticulously pointed out the errors, citing specific lines and counts of missing or incorrect characters. Mei Yushan tried various excuses, but Nangong Yao insisted she recopy. One night, frustrated by the repeated recopying and Nangong Yao's accuracy in spotting errors, Mei Yushan challenged him.

She bet that if he could accurately state the exact number of missing words in her work, she would admit his skill and become his teacher. The stakes were high: if he was wrong, he had to return her Moon Spirit Pearl; if she lost, she would apprentice herself to him. Nangong Yao accepted the bet. When Mei Yushan checked herself, she found his count of two hundred and seventy-five missing words was precisely correct.

Despite losing the bet, she continued to make mistakes and be ordered to recopy. She even tried copying backward, thinking she could trick him, but he still caught the omissions and errors, giving exact counts. Day after day, she copied, exhausted, sometimes even complaining about the hardship in her sleep. Finally, she managed to copy a text perfectly, without a single error or omission.

Mei Yushan, acknowledging his skill and having lost the bet, began calling Nangong Yao "Little Master," accepting him as her teacher. Their interactions became more relaxed; he told her she didn't need to call him by his title when they were alone, and he even gave her food.

Mei Yushan started teasing him, using phrases from vulgar storybooks, calling him a "sanctimonious little master" and jokingly accusing him of improper behavior, revealing her knowledge came from a toothless old storyteller on Xuanwu Street.

Episode 7 Recap

Mei Yushan was walking alone when she saw a shaky shadow, causing her to stop in fear. Nangong Yao appeared, reassuring her that he was never afraid of anything, especially not in his own home, the palace. He asked her what she was afraid of, and she listed ghosts, snakes, caterpillars, and not having good food. As they cautiously approached, they discovered the shadow was just a cat.

Nangong Yao immediately became terrified, exclaiming how horrible cats were due to their terrible claws, recalling being scratched as a child. Mei Yushan found this amusing, pointing out that the cat had been scared away by him. She teased him for claiming not to be afraid just moments before, and he jokingly threatened her with copying more books. They said goodbye.

Upon returning to Chongwen Academy, Mei Yushan found Bai Ye conversing with several young ladies, including Miss Ruomei, Miss Yuanyuan, and Miss Yangyang. The ladies were effusive in their praise of Bai Ye's handsomeness, even comparing him favorably to the Crown Prince, and his extraordinary talents, suggesting he could predict the future. Bai Ye responded with polite humility. When Mei Yushan arrived, Bai Ye approached her, stating he had been waiting for her.

He commented on her distant relationship with the other young ladies, which she acknowledged, saying their earlier conversation was merely polite formality and that having him as a friend was enough. Bai Ye revealed he had prepared a special gift for her since he hadn't seen her in a while, sometimes addressing her as "Douzi" or "Little Diviner."

He presented her with a painting that, when manipulated in a specific way, would glow and project a starry sky, transforming the immediate area into a miniature galaxy. Mei Yushan was enchanted, exclaiming how amazing it was. Bai Ye explained he created it because he knew how much she admired the starry sky. She was overjoyed, stating it was the most thoughtful gift she had ever received, and expressed her intention to display it prominently.

When asked who gave it to her, she playfully refused to tell. Nangong Yao reported to the Empress, who noted his initial reluctance to attend Chongwen Academy but now his desire to stay longer. Nangong Yao explained that while he had attended the Grand Tutor's lectures for years, new and interesting courses had been introduced that he did not wish to miss.

Pleased by his focus on studies, the Empress permitted him to stay a bit longer but stressed the importance of not neglecting state affairs, particularly the unsettled situation of the Lantian refugees. She urged him to share the Emperor's burdens. Nangong Yao assured her that memorials were delivered daily and he did not neglect his duties.

After he left, the Empress instructed her eunuch, Eunuch Song, to prepare for a visit to Chongwen Academy, expressing skepticism that only new courses were keeping her son there and stating her intention to discover who was the real reason. Later, Nangong Yao discussed the troubled recruitment efforts for the refugees. Someone was inciting them to refuse the offers and demand compensation related to the earthquake damage, directing the unrest towards him.

He was accustomed to such problems being linked to him and knew the instigators were waiting for him to appear to escalate the situation. Bai Ye, present during the discussion, offered to handle the recruitment, stating it was his duty to assist the Crown Prince. Nangong Yao accepted his help. Mei Yushan attempted to leave the grounds, but Xing Shi, who was now the martial arts instructor at Chongwen Academy after winning the physical competition the previous year, stopped her.

She initially feigned a stomach ache to get out of class, but Xing Shi pointed out the location of the restroom, leading her to admit she just wanted to explore the garden. Finding a leaf, she demonstrated blowing it to make a whistling sound, a skill she learned from her father. Nangong Yao happened upon them, intrigued by the sound. Mei Yushan teased him for not knowing such a simple thing.

He expressed interest in learning, so she showed him how to select the right leaf and blow into it. His first attempt produced an unappealing sound, causing Mei Yushan to laugh and joke that he sounded like he was farting or had indigestion. He prepared to try again. Meanwhile, the Empress arrived with Eunuch Song, having decided to investigate the real reason for her son's reluctance to leave.

She mentioned having heard that Miss Mei from the Mei family was gentle and talented, with a particularly talented maid known for vivid paintings, and had even sent supplements when she heard Mei Yushan was punished upon arrival. However, her attention was drawn to Nangong Yao and Mei Yushan. She observed Mei Yushan teaching him the leaf whistle and heard her blunt, informal remarks.

Observing the playful interaction, the Empress felt she had misjudged Mei Yushan and concluded that she was responsible for her son's uncharacteristically frivolous behavior. Following this, Nangong Yao playfully tricked Mei Yushan by pretending to spot a cat, knowing her fear from the previous night. When she reacted with fright, he revealed it was a joke. She called him out, and he ran off, displaying some martial arts skill.

She pursued him, demanding he return a pearl he seemed to have taken from her. He asked about her other skills and said he would tell her if she gave the pearl back, threatening to leave if he doesn't. He questioned her actions, calling her behavior unrefined like a rural woman. Bai Ye posted the recruitment notice, which immediately drew a large crowd of refugees.

Among them were three men hoping to secure work to see Douzi, who they referred to among themselves as brothers. They were initially wary, questioning if the work involved becoming eunuchs or if they would lose their food aid without getting paid. Bai Ye addressed their concerns, explaining that the court would sign contracts ensuring their rights and promised to pay one month's wage in advance upon signing, showing actual silver to build trust.

Originally intended only for Lantian residents, the recruitment scope was broadened by Bai Ye upon hearing that neighboring areas were also affected by the disaster. He announced that any refugee could register, requiring details about their family, losses, and origin, specifically asking if they were from Huanglu Town near Lantian. Xing Shi was present to maintain order and noticed the three men, recognizing them from a previous encounter at the Museum where they had seemed suspicious.

The refugees, reassured by the contract and advance payment, began signing up eagerly. Xing Shi then excused himself, stating he needed to return to Chongwen Academy to teach the afternoon martial arts class, leaving Bai Ye to oversee the registration. Back at Chongwen Academy, Xing Shi led the physical training session in preparation for the annual Challenge Match. Mei Yushan expressed confidence, stating this was an area where she excelled.

As she walked the balance beam, her maid, Douzi, watched anxiously. Mei Yushan asked if Douzi was worried about her, but Douzi playfully replied that she was worried about her own body, fearing Mei Yushan might fall on her. Mei Yushan then deliberately stumbled twice, causing Douzi to react with concern and grab her. Observing this, Zhang Yangyang commented on Douzi's apparent loyalty and instructed her own maid, Que, to emulate her.

However, when it was Zhang Yangyang's turn, Que was inattentive, resulting in Zhang Yangyang taking a hard fall. Nearby, other young ladies gossiped about Mei Yushan, suggesting her loyal maid was evidence of her trying to marry up to the Eighth Prince, calling her actions ridiculous and telling each other to be respectful in case she succeeded. Mei Yushan overheard them and directly confronted them, asking if they were talking about her.

They responded rudely, accusing her of seducing the Eighth Prince and calling the Eighth Prince a "boy." Douzi defended her mistress, but Mei Yushan diffused the situation by telling Douzi and another maid, Miss Qing, to go clean up the training area, which another young lady, Miss Qiwen, felt was beneath them. Later, Mei Yushan sought out the Eighth Prince to address the rumors. He seemed to anticipate a declaration of affection but warned he might not accept it.

Mei Yushan clarified that while she held great respect for him, she harbored no romantic feelings and apologized if her previous actions had caused any misunderstanding. He realized his misinterpretation. Back at the training area, Nangong Pin, the Third Prince, noticed Douzi watching Mei Yushan and mistakenly believed she was captivated by him. He boasted to his Second Brother about attracting the attention of the talented palace maid.

After the initial training, Nangong Yao proposed a competition to snatch a flower ball from the top of a tall pole, noting it was part of the upcoming Challenge Match and a good practice. Mei Yushan readily accepted the challenge. For the flower ball challenge, both Mei Yushan and Nangong Yao began climbing the tall pole. Their fellow students cheered them on. As they raced upwards, Mei Yushan quickly pulled ahead. Nangong Yao accused her of fouling, which she denied.

She confidently declared she would win, while he countered that she wouldn't even reach the ball. Just as she was nearing the top, Mei Yushan accidentally slipped. Nangong Yao reacted instantly, grabbing hold of her. They both fell from the pole, landing on the ground with Nangong Yao still holding her. Students and staff rushed over to check on them. Mei Yushan confirmed she was fine, pointing out that since they both fell, neither of them had won the competition.

She asked Nangong Yao why he seemed so pleased despite the outcome. The physical training continued with an event called the 'Mala Race'. Xing Shi announced that to motivate everyone, he had added a special prize for the first-place winner: a 'spicy great meal,' a hot dish made with unique spices and chili peppers, whose distinct flavor only the winner would get to taste. While some participants complained about having to run, citing delicate feet, Mei Yushan appeared ready. Xing Shi offered advice on endurance running, emphasizing regulating breathing and relaxing muscles. As the race was about to start, one person made a false start.

Episode 8 Recap

During the Royal Mala Race, Mei Yushan demonstrated remarkable speed, outpacing everyone. Nangong Yao, noting her swiftness, questioned her secret, especially since a "Little Master" had advised slowing down. Mei Yushan inwardly reflected that running fast was a crucial skill for a thief to survive. She quickly secured first place in the race. Afterward, the slow runners, including the Eighth Prince and Miss Su, were playfully teased by Mei Yushan for being last and punished with one hundred extra laps.

In the etiquette class, Madam Liu remarked that Miss Su had become "rounder" lately and needed more exercise to maintain her figure. While teaching standing posture, Madam Liu instructed the students to alternately lift their left and right legs. Zhuang Yangyang found the exercise exhausting and was ordered to stand facing the wall to reflect on her complaints. Mei Yushan followed the instructions easily, lifting and lowering her legs with little effort.

Eunuch Zhang, who managed the Imperial Garden, passed by Chongwen Academy with fresh flowers. Madam Liu saw him and went over to chat, completely forgetting about the students balancing on one foot. Many of the young ladies and princes began to wobble. Mei Yushan also found it increasingly difficult to maintain her balance. Seeing this, Nangong Yao subtly used his foot to support Mei Yushan.

However, after standing in the position for too long, Nangong Yao accidentally extended his leg, causing several princes in front of him to fall over. Chongwen Academy later held a challenge match.

Guard Xingshi announced the rules: teams of two, one person would shoot arrows until they hit the tenth ring, then the other person would navigate an obstacle course involving crossing a bridge, running a lap, turning three times, climbing a rope net, and ringing a bell at the top. During the archery practice, the four young ladies struggled to aim correctly. Mei Yushan and Nangong Yao were paired together.

Noticing Mei Yushan's difficulty even holding the bow, Nangong Yao stood close behind her, guiding her posture and aiming. His helpfulness and affectionate gaze made the other ladies feel jealous. Bai Ye arrived at Chongwen Academy just as Nangong Yao was closely assisting Mei Yushan. The fondness in Nangong Yao's eyes left Bai Ye with a clear understanding of the situation. Only three teams, including Mei Yushan's, Huang Yuanyuan's, and Su Ruomei's, advanced to the second round.

Mei Yushan and Huang Yuanyuan pulled ahead early in the obstacle course, quickly reaching the high pole and climbing the red silk ribbons. As Mei Yushan was about to grab the embroidered ball at the top, her silk ribbon ripped. Just as she was about to fall awkwardly, Nangong Yao swiftly flew towards her and caught her, cradling her as they gently descended to the ground. Despite the scare, their team won the round.

Other students commented on the Crown Prince's quick and kind reaction, speculating it was because he and 'Douzi' were classmates. After the match, Bai Ye reported to Nangong Yao on the disaster relief efforts, including the successful recruitment of men to build barracks and women and children to work in workshops. Nangong Yao praised Bai Ye's competent handling of the matter, mentioning he already knew the details.

However, noting Bai Ye's subdued mood despite the success, Nangong Yao offered to share his burden. Bai Ye stated he was fine but took the opportunity to mention the Empress's frequent inquiries about Nangong Yao taking a wife and asked if he had someone in mind. Before Nangong Yao could fully respond, Mei Yushan walked by in the rain. She boldly mimicked an archery pose towards him.

Nangong Yao immediately shifted his attention, acknowledging her with affection in his eyes, leaving Bai Ye feeling like an unnecessary presence. In the Grand Tutor's etiquette class, while learning from the "Analects for Women," Huang Yuanyuan fell asleep at her desk. Su Ruomei played a trick on her, drawing on her face. When Huang Yuanyuan woke up and discovered the drawing, she complained loudly.

The Grand Tutor reprimanded Huang Yuanyuan for disrupting the class and raising her voice, quoting the text: "Do not laugh while happy. Do not raise your voice while angry." He punished her by making her copy the "Analects for Women" ten times. Mei Yushan stood up and challenged the Grand Tutor's instruction, arguing that people should express their joy and anger. She explained that suppressing laughter and putting on fake smiles seemed insincere and even vicious.

She used the example of performers, suggesting they would feel disheartened if the audience didn't laugh. Although her reasoning was unconventional, the Grand Tutor admitted her point had some merit and rescinded Huang Yuanyuan's punishment. After class, Huang Yuanyuan thanked Mei Yushan for speaking up for her. Mei Yushan encouraged her to retaliate next time someone drew on her face, saying her martial arts shouldn't go to waste.

Huang Yuanyuan hesitated, mentioning her mother called her rough, but Mei Yushan insisted it was simply returning the favor. Later, discussing the upcoming hunting activity, Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang eagerly anticipated the event, speculating about hunting dangerous animals or protecting the Crown Prince.

Mei Yushan arrived, having seemingly had an internal conversation with a voice representing 'Douzi's' original thoughts, where the voice questioned her changing priorities from the Moon Spirit Pearl to the academy and noted her apparent enjoyment of her current life, to which Mei Yushan responded she was still focused on her mission but needed to gain trust. Hearing about the hunting, Mei Yushan expressed her disapproval, calling it cruel to hunt innocent animals like deer and sheep.

Su Ruomei scoffed, calling hunting a traditional and sophisticated hobby, and argued the animals would die eventually anyway. Mei Yushan countered sharply, suggesting Su Ruomei would also die someday, provoking Su Ruomei to threaten to report her to Eunuch Song. Mei Yushan dismissed the threat, saying Eunuch Song was too busy for such trivial matters.

Bai Ye sent Mei Yushan a pair of gloves through his attendant, Ling Xiao, as a gift to protect her hands during the hunting event, indicating his concern for her. Mei Yushan received the gloves, noting they were nice but felt strange receiving them for hunting. Later, Mei Yushan visited Bai Ye at Tianji Mansion, finding him with an injured leg.

As a return gift, she gave him a bottle of traditional ointment for sprains and bruises, explaining it was a folk remedy taught by her father that worked quickly and felt cooling. Ling Xiao, observing Mei Yushan, later remarked to Bai Ye how she lacked the usual arrogance of a young lady and was instead casual, free, and lovable, noting Bai Ye's clear admiration for her.

In a flashback to seventeen years prior, a young Bai Ye was presented to the Emperor after General Wei's military success. Bai Ye, identified as a Spiritual Friar, warned the Emperor against personally joining the pursuit of the remaining Shengdong forces, predicting he would die at the hands of the Shengdong general, Xuan Bing, if he did. The Emperor dismissed the child's warning as nonsense, confident in Jixi's victory. Despite Bai Ye's repeated insistence, the Emperor departed.

The flashback concludes with an imperial edict formally inviting Bai Ye to the palace to assist with military affairs due to his spiritual abilities, though some viewed his subsequent residence as akin to confinement. Back in the present, Bai Ye was seen looking at and gently touching a teacup that Mei Yushan had used, further emphasizing his affection for her. The annual palace hunting event was announced.

The goal this year was shifted from large animals like wolves and tigers to smaller ones like rabbits, intended to demonstrate finer archery skills. As the rabbits were released, Mei Yushan commented that she didn't expect "Little Master" (Nangong Yao) to be so cold-blooded. Nangong Yao, overhearing her, remarked on Mei Yushan's unexpected competitiveness as they set out.

Episode 9 Recap

The hunting competition commenced, with the prey changed from large beasts to smaller rabbits to test the participants' accuracy. After the rules were announced, Mei Yushan was the first to eagerly head to the hunting field, with the others following behind. As Nangong Pin aimed at a rabbit, Mei Yushan caused a diversion by introducing a large spider. When Su Ruomei prepared to shoot, a flying insect startled her away.

Huang Yuanyuan and Nangong Pin also fell victim to triggered mechanisms, resulting in beehives landing on them, leaving their faces covered in stings. These disruptions were all orchestrated by Mei Yushan. As Zhuang Yangyang took aim at a rabbit, Mei Yushan was nearby. Nangong Yao stepped forward to push Mei Yushan out of the way, and they ended up tumbling down a hillside together. Su Ruomei eventually shot a rabbit, only to be informed it was a stuffed toy.

The participants learned that Nangong Yao disliked killing and had arranged for stuffed toys, manipulated by strings, to be used instead of real animals for the annual hunt. As they prepared to return, someone noticed that one of Nangong Yao's sachets was missing, presumably dropped in the forest. Nangong Yao didn't seem concerned, stating the Household Department could make another, and instructed the group to begin the journey back.

Upon reaching the area where the waiting maids were gathered, Douzi realized Mei Yushan was not among them. With the day drawing to a close, Nangong Yao immediately ordered a search for Mei Yushan in the woods. Entering the woods to search, Xing Shi received a signal from Que. After dismissing the accompanying guards, Que reported that they had investigated the three men in Black Dog Alley.

The men had been overheard while drunk, discussing details of adopting a foundling girl years ago. Xing Shi concluded that this foundling was very likely Princess Yueying, a person he had previously left in the care of these men with a specific wooden box, promising to return for her. He resolved to visit Black Dog Alley himself to investigate further. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan made her way back to the spot where she and Nangong Yao had fallen.

Searching around, she found a roasted sweet potato left from an earlier moment. Just as she was about to eat, she spotted a shadow behind her. Fearing she was caught, she quickly knelt and pleaded for mercy, offering good food and wine. Looking up, she saw it was Nangong Yao. Nangong Yao questioned why Mei Yushan had stayed behind alone in the woods.

Mei Yushan explained she had wanted to help him look for his lost sachet, adding that she thought he believed she only cared about eating the sweet potato. Nangong Yao dismissed the sachet as unimportant, expressing concern for her safety in the woods late at night. They built a fire and roasted the sweet potato. When Mei Yushan eagerly took a bite, she burned her mouth.

Nangong Yao leaned close to blow on it, and in that intimate moment, Mei Yushan found herself distracted before the pain brought her back to reality. Upon returning to the residence, Mei Yushan began persistently asking Douzi to teach her embroidery, intending to make a sachet for Nangong Yao. Douzi observed that Mei Yushan seemed less focused on retrieving the Moon Spirit Pearl and more content spending time with Nangong Yao.

Mei Yushan blushed, insisting her sole purpose was to gain Nangong Yao's trust to get the pearl back sooner. Recognizing her lack of talent for embroidery, Mei Yushan then suggested that Douzi, who was skilled at drawing, create a portrait of Nangong Yao instead, believing that gifting both would make him happy and expedite the return of the pearl.

When Mei Yushan presented the handmade sachet to Nangong Yao, he couldn initially couldn't help but laugh at its peculiar shape, even jokingly asking if it was from "the little rabbit." However, upon learning Mei Yushan had made it herself, he expressed that it was very precious to him. Mei Yushan then felt emboldened to bring up the matter of the Moon Spirit Pearl, asking for it back. Nangong Yao inquired about its purpose.

Unable to reveal the truth, Mei Yushan concocted a story about a friend, a noble lady from a wealthy family, who suffered from hysteria and could only be cured by this specific pearl, based on an expert's advice. Nangong Yao found this explanation strange, questioning why a pearl would cure hysteria and why her friend wouldn't seek medical treatment. Their conversation was interrupted by the summons for jurisprudence class, and Nangong Yao departed, pleased with his new sachet.

Later that evening, Dongxi reported to Nangong Yao regarding the theft of the Moon Spirit Pearl from the Museum on the night of the exhibition. He confirmed that although the theft was discovered, it was suppressed because Nangong Yao had been present and the pearl was from Shengdong. Dongxi noted that since the pearl's disappearance, there had been no further thefts at the Museum, indicating the pearl was the primary target.

Dongxi suggested something peculiar must have happened that night and that only Mei Yushan could explain why she possessed the pearl. Meanwhile, Xing Shi had found his way to Black Dog Alley. There, he spotted a familiar sealed wooden box, recognizing it as the one he had used to protect and leave Princess Yueying with the men years ago.

Connecting this finding with a feeling of familiarity he had experienced upon first meeting someone he calls "Little Stone," he finally realized that "Little Stone" was indeed Princess Yueying. Nangong Yao summoned Mei Yushan to the Eastern Palace and confronted her, asking why the Moon Spirit Pearl was in her possession and why she had lied.

Mei Yushan became visibly distressed, stumbling over her words and claiming it wasn't the Moon Spirit Pearl at all, but just an ordinary pearl from the Grand Chancellor's residence. Her story about the friend needing the pearl for hysteria became increasingly difficult to justify. Seeing he wasn't getting a clear answer, Nangong Yao, while reassuring her that she wouldn't be punished and offering her pastries, persisted in questioning the pearl's origin.

Mei Yushan, flustered, asked why he was interrogating her instead of just returning the pearl as he'd summoned her for. Nangong Yao explained he couldn't return it while questions remained unanswered. He then instructed Zuo to escort Mei Yushan back to the Guixiu Pavilion. Despite being sent away and her story being doubted, Mei Yushan, determined to retrieve the pearl, decided to attempt to infiltrate the Eastern Palace herself.

That evening, the Eastern Palace grounds were being heavily sprayed with mosquito repellent, particularly around delicate plants. Mei Yushan, in her swapped body, attempted to sneak through the palace grounds. While trying to evade staff, she encountered a eunuch who recognized her as the "little palace maid" he claimed had molested him earlier. Despite her protests, the eunuch raised an alarm, calling her a scoundrel and demanding justice. The commotion drew Nangong Yao's attention.

Upon hearing the eunuch's accusation that the small palace maid had molested him and was hiding nearby, Nangong Yao found the claim highly improbable but ordered the guards to apprehend her. Facing capture, Mei Yushan desperately cried out for help, calling to "Little Master."

Episode 10 Recap

Mei Yushan secretly returned to the Eastern Palace alone and disguised herself as a palace maid. She snuck into the Crown Prince Nangong Yao's room, searching everywhere for the Moon Spirit Pearl. Accidentally stepping on a mechanism, several hidden arrows shot out. Mei Yushan cried out for help. Nangong Yao, who was just outside dealing with a eunuch's complaint, heard her shouts and rushed into the room.

He pulled Mei Yushan down from where she was clinging to a pillar, calming her down. Startled, Mei Yushan was shaken. Nangong Yao immediately ordered a palace maid to summon the Grand Tutor and specifically instructed them not to mention Mei Yushan's unauthorized entry into the Eastern Palace. The Grand Tutor was summoned to the Eastern Palace late at night and complained as he walked about being pulled out of his warm bed.

Douzi came to the Eastern Palace looking for Mei Yushan. Seeing the Grand Tutor had also just arrived, she stepped forward to respectfully ask for his help in assisting Mei Yushan. Her sincere attitude and appropriate language impressed the Grand Tutor, who praised her as being much better than those at Chongwen Academy. Guard Xing Shi was patrolling the Eastern Palace when he saw Douzi waiting outside.

He approached and asked her how she had been all these years, but Douzi seemed uncertain how to answer. She helped the palace maids carry firewood towards the Crown Prince's room. Guard Xing Shi commented that she looked like an old acquaintance and apologized for startling her. The Grand Tutor brewed herbal medicine, and Mei Yushan soon woke up.

Seeing that the Grand Tutor had not only brewed medicine but also roasted a grasshopper, she immediately sat up, snatched it, and ate it. The Grand Tutor relaxed, completely losing the solemn demeanor he had in the classroom, and listened as Mei Yushan described various folk foods she had eaten, including cicadas, pupae, grasshoppers, snakes, toads, and even unborn chickens. He was surprised but also intrigued by her adventurous diet.

Douzi requested permission to take Mei Yushan back to the Guixiu Pavilion. However, Nangong Yao stated that Mei Yushan was still unwell and could not leave, adding that if others found out about her unauthorized entry into the Eastern Palace and injury, it would cause trouble. He also took the opportunity to ask Douzi why Mei Yushan seemed like a completely different person before and after the treasure appraisal event. Douzi hesitated, struggling to answer.

Just then, Mei Yushan suddenly appeared in the main hall, having apparently recovered quickly. She signaled to Douzi to stay in the Eastern Palace for the night. Nangong Yao acknowledged that Mei Yushan's recovery was rapid, crediting the Grand Tutor. Douzi offered to stay and care for Mei Yushan, and Nangong Yao agreed, noting that Douzi knew her better.

He pressed Douzi again about Mei Yushan's change, but Mei Yushan cut in, claiming they were discussing secrets, like holding a rabbit. She complained about the hidden weapons in the palace, joking that Nangong Yao's name should be "Nangong Kill." Nangong Yao playfully offered to hold the "rabbit" again, but Mei Yushan clutched her head, claiming a severe headache and needing to rest in the palace overnight. Nangong Yao accepted this, noting the late hour.

From outside, Xing Shi overheard Nangong Yao questioning Douzi, leading him to suspect Nangong Yao also sensed something was amiss. This further solidified Xing Shi's conviction that Douzi was the little princess he was sworn to protect. He recalled a past event where his father sacrificed his life to buy time for Xing Shi to take the little princess to safety. His father, mortally wounded, urged him to protect the princess.

Now, Xing Shi felt he was finally fulfilling his father's dying wish. Later that night, after Douzi had gone to her room and extinguished her lamp, Mei Yushan quietly left the room. She sneaked into Nangong Yao's bedroom to search again, eventually even searching him while he was asleep. Nangong Yao suddenly woke up and pinned Mei Yushan down on the bed.

Caught, Mei Yushan had no choice but to tell him about the body swap that occurred during the lunar eclipse due to the Moon Spirit Pearl. Initially, Nangong Yao did not believe such an absurd story. Mei Yushan insisted the pearl could save lives and belonged to the Mei family, but Nangong Yao countered that the pearl was an artifact of Shengdong and possessing it was treason, suggesting the Mei family might be colluding with enemies.

When Mei Yushan denied her family's involvement and reaffirmed the swap, Nangong Yao demanded proof that she was who she claimed to be. Mei Yushan demonstrated a theft skill by picking up a sachet from across the room using only her fingers. Seeing this "thieving skill," Nangong Yao was astonished but began to believe her, admitting that she had indeed been like a different person since entering the palace. He confirmed her real name was Douzi.

Douzi expressed her relief that he finally believed her, sharing her frustrations with the strict rules and expectations of being the Grand Chancellor's daughter, including the difficulty of attending school with her lack of education. Nangong Yao then made a startling statement, saying he should have recognized her sooner because her eyes were identical to those of Empress Li. Douzi was confused by this.

Nangong Yao dismissed it as perhaps drunken rambling for now but stated she would believe him one day. Douzi told him to stop talking nonsense and threatened to report him if he continued. Meanwhile, Xing Shi found Douzi alone outside the hall. He approached her, expressing concern and asking why she was up so late. However, believing he had malicious intentions, Douzi secretly knocked him out from behind and tied him up.

When Xing Shi woke up, he explained to Douzi his conclusion about her identity and the hardships she must have endured surviving alone all these years, promising to protect her from then on. Douzi found his words strange and asked who he was, but she told him not to mention his theory again. The next morning, Mei Yushan asked Douzi if she remembered what her biological mother looked like.

Douzi explained that she had no memory of her birth parents, as her three fathers told her she was abandoned as a baby in a wooden box. She recounted having several women she called "mother" throughout her life based on who cared for her (Mother Zhu the wet nurse, Mother Chen her father's lover, Mrs. Zhang who shared roasted chicken feet). She expressed more concern for her three fathers.

Mei Yushan, feeling better thanks to the Grand Tutor's medicine, advised Douzi not to attend school that day to avoid questions about her injury. She promised Douzi that if they ever switched back, she would protect her and would treat her like a sister, offering her a place in the Mei residence where her parents would treat her well. Douzi was hesitant, mentioning her desire to travel and her worry for her fathers.

Separately, Douzi's three fathers, who had infiltrated the refugee camp, hoped to find an opportunity to see Douzi but found none. They planned to sneak out of the camp that night. Their conversation was overheard by a supervisor. The supervisor immediately reported to a steward who was a trusted subordinate of Liu Qinyuan.

Since the Relief Organization case had led to the punishment of Liu Qinyuan's allies under Nangong Yao's orders, the steward saw the discovery of fake refugees as an opportunity to retaliate against Nangong Yao.

Episode 11 Recap

Rumors quickly spread through Chongwen Academy about a woman breaking into the Eastern Palace the previous night. Mei Yushan was late for breakfast, leading Su Ruomei and others to speculate that she was the intruder. While they whispered, Douzi, accompanied by a maid, entered the classroom. Huang Yuanyuan immediately questioned her. Douzi neither confirmed nor denied, instead accusing them of being nosy. Zhuang Yangyang warned that if the matter spread, it would tarnish the Mei family's reputation.

Unsure how to respond, Douzi asked Mei Yushan to grind ink while she stepped out to avoid the gossip. As she reached the doorway, she collided with Nangong Yao. They faced each other, and their interaction created a distinct atmosphere that everyone present noticed. Soon after Nangong Yao was seated, Nangong Pin eagerly questioned him about why the Grand Tutor was summoned to his palace the previous night.

Nangong Yao explained that his rabbit had injured itself from scurrying around, causing some commotion. Those who knew the truth lowered their heads, exchanging glances. Nangong Pin suggested that the Eastern Palace should select a Crown Princess soon so the Crown Prince wouldn't have to handle everything himself. Nangong Yao quickly clarified that he currently had no one he was fond of.

That evening, while the workers in the communal sleeping quarters were asleep, Douzi's three fathers attempted to escape the camp. A supervisor deliberately created noise, alerting the patrolling soldiers, and the three men were apprehended. An investigation revealed that the trio were actually petty thieves from the capital who had disguised themselves as refugees to claim relief payments. They had also stolen money from other refugees in their room and were caught while trying to flee.

News of the incident quickly spread throughout the capital. Liu Qinyuan led a group of officials to protest outside the Hall of Supreme Harmony, submitting an impeachment against the Crown Prince for failing in the recruitment process and accusing him of incompetence in governance. Eunuch Song reported the matter to the Empress. The Empress remained composed, remarking that dealing with people is like tending to flowers, requiring regular pruning, especially when branches grow crooked and become a nuisance.

Shortly after, Zhuang Fucheng arrived with a memorial containing irrefutable evidence of Liu Qinyuan's corruption. The Empress decided to use this to curb Liu Qinyuan's influence. To secure Zhuang Fucheng's loyalty, she specifically mentioned that Zhuang Yangyang, Director Zhuang's daughter, was elegant and decent, making her a suitable candidate for the position of Crown Princess. Zhuang Fucheng expressed his gratitude to the Empress on behalf of his daughter.

Regarding the events that occurred during the appraisal at the Museum, the Empress ordered an investigation. Eunuch Song confronted Mei Yushan, questioning why she had impersonated a palace maid to approach the Crown Prince that night and why she was near the exhibition hall when something was stolen. When Mei Yushan was unable to answer, Eunuch Song prepared to take her to the Department of Prudence for interrogation. Xing Shi intervened, halting Eunuch Song.

Xing Shi stated that while he wouldn't defy the Empress's orders, taking someone away without fully investigating was improper. Eunuch Song claimed he found Mei Yushan's maid strange that night. Xing Shi pointed out that many people were present and questioned if all the ladies and maids should be interrogated. Eunuch Song then implied Xing Shi was protecting Mei Yushan.

Xing Shi asserted that as a guard of the Eastern Palace, he stood for justice, not individuals, and asked if Eunuch Song was questioning his character. Xing Shi then referenced the Crown Prince's assassination attempt and the order to keep it discreet, suggesting Eunuch Song was disobeying the Crown Prince. Eunuch Song quickly retreated, excusing himself for the disturbance. Mei Yushan thanked Xing Shi for helping her, and he replied it was his duty.

Nangong Yao returned the Moon Spirit Pearl to Mei Yushan, who was hiding. He asked what her plans were after they switched back. She replied that she intended to leave the palace as soon as possible. Nangong Yao was surprised by her haste. She acknowledged his kindness but explained she couldn't stay in the palace forever.

He cautioned her never to reveal the body-switching secret and to take good care of herself once she was outside the palace, as he could no longer protect her there. Bai Ye arrived at the Eastern Palace to report on the issues that arose from the recruitment. He also inquired if Nangong Yao had seen the Moon Spirit Pearl that went missing from the Museum.

Nangong Yao expressed surprise at how quickly the news had spread and did not answer directly. He then turned to accompany Xing Shi to address the matter of the fake refugees. Nangong Yao questioned Douzi's three fathers. Unaware of Nangong Yao's true identity, the fathers boasted about their daughter holding a high position in the palace. One of the fathers tried to silence the other.

Nangong Yao, posing as a minor palace official, provided them with wine and food and asked if they were afraid of death and losing such luxuries. They continued to refuse to identify who was behind them. Nangong Yao then declared that if they did not reveal their accomplice, they would be decapitated in twenty days according to the law.

Mei Yushan and Douzi took the Moon Spirit Pearl back to the pavilion at the Museum where they had initially switched bodies. They tried numerous methods, including using the pearl, changing positions, and reciting incantations, but despite their efforts, they were unable to switch back. Exhausted, they returned to their room. Douzi expressed worry about her three fathers' fate and who would care for them if they couldn't switch back.

Mei Yushan offered to ask her parents to bring them to the Grand Chancellor's residence to enjoy their later years, assuring her there was plenty of room and people there. Douzi was deeply grateful for the suggestion. She then proposed that they become sworn sisters, a suggestion Mei Yushan agreed to, though hesitant about the blood ritual. They performed a ceremony, vowing to share happiness and hardship.

Douzi joked that if one died, the other could still live on in the other's body. As they celebrated, Douzi suddenly remembered that the original body switch occurred during a lunar eclipse. She realized that they might need to wait for the next lunar eclipse to switch back. When Mei Yushan asked when that would be, Douzi replied she only knew it happened every few years. They decided to try again during the next full moon as an interim measure.

Meanwhile, Nangong Yao discussed matters with Eunuch Song. He asked if there were historical precedents for commoners marrying into royalty and if there were records of royals falling in love with female thieves. He clarified that he meant an "adorable" female thief, not a wicked one. Eunuch Song confirmed commoners marrying into the palace but had not heard of the latter.

He noted that historically, such marriages often ended poorly, mentioning a commoner who became Empress but died in a fire. Nangong Yao dismissed the negative outcomes, stating he didn't care about status as long as the person wasn't a princess from Shengdong. He expressed frustration at Eunuch Song's lack of understanding. Reflecting on the Moon Spirit Pearl and Mei Yushan, Nangong Yao confided in Xing Shi that he regretted giving the pearl back so quickly.

He questioned if truly liking someone meant keeping them close and growing old together, calling this idea selfish. Xing Shi offered a different perspective, suggesting that liking someone should mean respecting them and granting them freedom. Nangong Yao argued that this approach was cowardly and questioned how one could rule if they were so weak. Xing Shi countered that it wasn't weakness but a refusal to force things. They eventually agreed to stop the argument.

Episode 12 Recap

After returning the Moon Spirit Pearl to Douzi, Nangong Yao found himself in a difficult emotional state. He wanted to pursue the girl he liked and sought advice from his attendants. One of them, Dongxi, shared a childhood memory of liking a neighbor girl and trying to get her attention by playing pranks, which only resulted in getting beaten up. Nangong Pin, overhearing that Nangong Yao wanted to pursue a girl, offered his own advice.

He first suggested constant close protection, but Nangong Yao didn't agree with this method. Nangong Pin then recommended giving gifts based on the girl's hobbies and offered to help prepare one. Ultimately, Nangong Yao decided to give Douzi a high-quality rope that, as Nangong Pin noted with surprise, was typically used by professional thieves because it couldn't be cut by knives or burned by fire.

Nangong Yao didn't explain his choice but instructed a maid named Zuo to package it elaborately in multiple boxes. When Douzi finally opened the gift, she found layers of packaging leading only to a treasure map, which she found both frustrating and amusing. At the Chongwen Academy, a new seating chart was posted. After the students took their new seats, Nangong Pin discovered the rope Nangong Yao had prepared was on his own desk.

It turned out Nangong Yao knew Douzi enjoyed challenges, so he had cleverly hidden the rope and given her a treasure map as a clue to find it. Following the clues on the treasure map, Douzi eventually located the gift in the Limbo (cold palace). She found the indestructible rope along with another rope hanging in the air.

As she wondered about the meaning, Nangong Yao suddenly appeared behind her and explained that the hanging rope was left by a concubine who had taken her own life there. Douzi was startled and realized Nangong Yao was just teasing her. Returning to the Guixiu Pavilion, Douzi told Nangong Yao that she and Mei Yushan planned to switch back into their own bodies on the next full moon night, which was only about ten days away.

Nangong Yao advised her not to steal again after leaving the palace and said he had already made arrangements for her future living expenses. Later, Nangong Yao accompanied the Empress to Chengbi Temple to fulfill a vow. That night, looking at the moon, Nangong Yao secretly wished for the moon not to become full, hoping that would prevent Douzi from leaving.

He later sent his attendant Nanbei back to the palace to check on Douzi and bring her some jujube cakes from a shop near the temple, asking specifically how she had slept. He expressed his worry that in three or four days it would be the full moon night, thinking that if the moon didn't become full, perhaps she wouldn't leave. Back at the Chongwen Academy, it rained heavily, causing the Grand Tutor to be late for class.

The students felt bored and sleepy. Nangong Pin suggested they play a truth or dare game. When it was Nangong Yao and Douzi's turn, Nangong Yao asked Douzi about her favorite gift since entering the palace. Douzi answered that she really liked the star map given by Bai Ye. He then asked who she found most special since coming to the palace. Douzi replied it was Nangong Yao, describing him as a righteous and worthy friend.

Hearing this, Nangong Yao looked visibly disappointed, realizing she only saw him as a friend. After this exchange, Nangong Yao secluded himself in his room, not eating or drinking for several days, causing his maid Zuo worry. Eventually, he emerged and forced himself to resume his duties, calling for the memorials he hadn't read. When class resumed at Chongwen Academy, Nangong Yao intentionally seemed to distance himself from Douzi.

He forgot his book, and when Douzi eagerly offered hers, he ignored her and instead borrowed a book from Nangong Pin next to him. During the etiquette class, Nangong Yao also avoided standing facing Douzi as they previously had. Douzi sensed Nangong Yao was deliberately avoiding her and wondered if it was because he knew she was a thief and despised her for it.

As the full moon night approached, Nangong Yao instructed Eunuch Song to prepare a large amount of pastries, including Osmanthus, chestnut, and jujube paste cakes. He ordered five boxes of each, commenting that with Douzi's appetite, it wouldn't be too much food for her journey.

He also specifically told Dongxi to keep a close watch on Mei Yushan and her maid and to personally escort them out of the palace if they left, providing a token for the guards to ensure smooth passage. That evening, thinking of the impending full moon night, Nangong Yao wished Douzi well, knowing they might not see each other again for a long time. Meanwhile, back in their room, Mei Yushan and Douzi held the Moon Spirit Pearl together.

Douzi noted how the pearl was glowing, something it hadn't done before, and felt sure they would finally switch back. However, after a moment, they still hadn't switched and wondered why. Mei Yushan suggested perhaps holding the pearl together was the key.

Episode 13 Recap

On the night of the full moon, Mei Yushan and Douzi sat in the Museum, holding the Moon Spirit Pearl, anticipating a successful body swap. Suddenly, lightning struck, splitting the pearl in two. Douzi quickly picked up the pieces, hoping they could still work, but another bolt of lightning shattered the pearl completely. With the body swap no longer possible, Mei Yushan complained about being stuck as a maid for life, feeling cheated.

Douzi felt even more wronged, stating she had no desire to be a high-ranking lady, confined by rules and studies, missing the freedom of the bustling marketplace. Due to overwhelming state affairs, Nangong Yao was furious with his subordinates. Douzi, inhabiting Mei Yushan's body, came to speak with him, but Nangong Yao was still upset about previous matters and dismissed her.

Later, however, he pondered why she had not left the palace after the full moon night and the failed swap. At Chongwen Academy, the day's lesson required students to pair up for recitation. Huang Yuanyuan intended to group with Douzi, but Zhuang Yangyang intercepted her, mocking Douzi for only associating with the Crown Prince. By the end of the lesson, everyone except Douzi had finished their assignment, leaving her to stay late at the academy.

Nangong Yao waited daily by the entrance of Chongwen Academy. One day, he saw Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) storm out of the academy, declaring her intention to leave the palace. Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, followed closely, desperately trying to stop her. She argued that if Douzi, in her body, secretly left the palace, the entire Mei family would become a laughingstock, and she, left in Douzi's body inside the palace, would be in an impossible situation.

Douzi, overwhelmed, refused to listen, insisting she wanted to leave immediately to drink mutton soup and find freedom far away. Mei Yushan grabbed her to physically restrain her, and in their struggle, they both tumbled into the lake by the pavilion. Both Bai Ye and Nangong Yao happened to be nearby and simultaneously plunged into the lake to rescue them. They both swam towards the person in Mei Yushan's body (Douzi).

Bai Ye reached her first and pulled her out of the water. Nangong Yao then saw the person in Douzi's body (Mei Yushan) struggling near the bottom and rescued her. After being pulled ashore, Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) profusely thanked Bai Ye for saving her, helping to wipe the water from his face. Bai Ye solicitously adjusted her clothing. Nangong Yao, observing this interaction, reacted with clear jealousy.

He pulled Douzi closer to him, asking why she had been so careless, suggesting she'd gotten heavier and the railing couldn't hold her. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan (in Douzi's body) lay on the ground, coughing uncontrollably. Douzi went to check on her. As Mei Yushan coughed and expelled water, a distinct mark on her neck was briefly visible. Bai Ye unintentionally saw the mark.

It seemed to trigger a memory related to the past events concerning the Shengdong kingdom, and he immediately ordered his subordinate to investigate the background of "Douzi's maid," referring to the person who was with the person he rescued. Mei Yushan, in Douzi's body, speculated that the Empress would surely not overlook the incident of Nangong Yao falling into the water and would likely punish them both.

Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body, decided to go to the Eastern Palace that evening to plead with Nangong Yao for help. While they were talking in the Eastern Palace, the Empress unexpectedly arrived. Nangong Yao quickly hid Douzi inside his bedroom. Elsewhere, Xing Shi, having noticed Bai Ye's reaction to the mark on the person in Douzi's body, worried about the "princess" (referring to the person in Mei Yushan's body).

He instructed Que to secretly place the Crown Prince's jade pendant in Mei Yushan's room to create a false impression that she was secretly in love with the Crown Prince, hoping this would lead to her expulsion from the palace. Que went to Mei Yushan's room that night to carry out the task but found Xing Shi sitting by the bed, looking concerned.

Seeing his expression, Que felt a pang of dissatisfaction that he seemed unaware of her own feelings for him. After they left, Mei Yushan's mother, having arranged entry with the eunuchs, came to the Guixiu Pavilion to visit her daughter but discovered that the person lying in the bed was not her child. In Nangong Yao's bedroom, where she was hiding, Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) accidentally made a noise, prompting the Empress to ask who was in there.

Nangong Yao blocked her entry and made excuses. The Empress questioned if he was hiding Mei Yushan, noting the change in Mei Yushan's demeanor since entering the palace and Nangong Yao's evident protection of her. When she insisted on checking the room, Nangong Yao continued to obstruct her, attempting to distract her by suggesting they go sample new tea. Frustrated at not being allowed into the room, the Empress decided to go to the Guixiu Pavilion instead.

In the Guixiu Pavilion, Shen Feixue (Mei Yushan in Douzi's body) confronted her mother (Mei Yushan's mother). The mother did not recognize her. Shen Feixue listed several intimate details about the mother, such as hurting herself while embroidering, breaking guqin strings, cheating at cards, and only becoming animated when shopping for jewelry, asking how she could know these things if not as her daughter.

The mother was shocked and distraught, demanding to know where her daughter was and accusing Shen Feixue of hiding or harming her, even suggesting she might have dismembered her. Just as the confrontation reached a peak, the arrival of the Empress was announced. Shen Feixue warned her mother not to speak carelessly if she cared about her daughter.

The mother composed herself and greeted the Empress, explaining she had come to visit her daughter after hearing she fell into the water and was now ill. Shen Feixue lay there, feigning sickness. The Empress acknowledged hearing about the fall and stated she had come to see Mei Yushan, insisting she needed to see and speak with her to feel at ease, despite the mother's attempts to deter her, citing the risk of infection.

Meanwhile, back in the Eastern Palace, Bai Ye and Nangong Yao discussed the rescue. Nangong Yao playfully teased Bai Ye about having taken the woman he was interested in. Bai Ye clarified he was joking earlier, acknowledging Nangong Yao had also been coming to his aid. He remarked that if Nangong Yao hadn't been there, he wouldn't have been able to save them both.

Bai Ye then revealed a secret: the person he saved was the one Nangong Yao had wanted to save. He described her as witty and intelligent, believing she and Nangong Yao made a good match, and suggested that since she was in the palace, Nangong Yao should take responsibility for her care. Nangong Yao readily agreed, stating that everything concerning her in the palace would now be his sole responsibility. Nangong Yao then offered Bai Ye the Goji berry and ginger soup that had been prepared for him, and they shared it.

Episode 14 Recap

Mei Yushan's mother arrived at the Guixiu Pavilion insisting on seeing her daughter. Mei Yushan, weakened and unable to explain the situation, introduced Douzi as herself, asking her mother to help conceal the truth from the Queen. The Queen stormed into the room, went directly to the bed, and pulled back the covers. She found Mei Yushan lying there, seemingly ill. Mei Yushan, despite her weakness, forced herself to bow in greeting to the Queen.

Douzi and Mei Yushan exchanged a look of relief as the Queen, seeing Mei Yushan was indeed unwell, decided not to stay long and left, urging her to rest. After the Queen departed, Mei Yushan's mother, still believing Douzi was her daughter, expressed concern about her changed demeanor. She presented a box of specially prepared food, including a dish she called "Stewed Melon with Longjing Tea" made with premature melon, stating it used to be Mei Yushan's favorite.

Douzi tasted it but immediately spat it out, calling it bitter gourd. The mother, noting the Queen's indifferent attitude towards her daughter, worried Mei Yushan was not favored and blamed her for failing her father's expectations and not considering her brothers' future prospects. Mei Yushan (acting as Douzi) argued that it was unreasonable to place the entire family's hopes on a single daughter. Douzi, overhearing this while pretending to be the maid, vigorously nodded in agreement.

The mother, saddened by what she perceived as her daughter's lack of understanding, compared her expectations to historical figures like Mulan and Zhaojun, saying she only wanted Mei Yushan to secure her brothers' future. Mei Yushan responded that asking a daughter to be a sacrifice for her brothers was absurd, especially when considering figures like Zhaojun, who faced fear and unease. She questioned if her upbringing was solely to make her a sacrifice.

Douzi interjected, echoing that daughters shouldn't have to repeat such tragedies. The mother persisted, praising the Crown Prince's qualities and asking what was wrong with marrying him. Mei Yushan countered that marriage required mutual affection. As it was getting late, the mother prepared to leave. After Mei Yushan's mother left, Douzi expressed envy towards Mei Yushan for having a mother who cared enough to visit her when she was sick.

She confided in Mei Yushan about constantly asking her three fathers about her own mother's identity and appearance, only for them to avoid her questions. Douzi longed to know her true background and whether her mother had abandoned her because she disliked her. Mei Yushan comforted her, promising to protect her, and Douzi reciprocated the promise. Meanwhile, Bai Ye had sent a spy to monitor the Guixiu Pavilion.

The spy reported that he couldn't clearly see the face of the girl inside because the room was dark, and she had left quickly when Mei Yushan's mother arrived. The spy asked Bai Ye why he was monitoring the maid. Bai Ye expressed hope that this matter was unrelated to Douzi, fearing it would lead to significant trouble otherwise. In another part of the palace, Que, the maid attending Su Ruomei, seemed happy.

She told Su Ruomei that the Queen had visited the Guixiu Pavilion, likely regarding the incident where the Crown Prince fell into the water. Que then revealed that the person saved by the Crown Prince was not Mei Yushan but her maid. Su Ruomei was surprised, and Que began to instigate her, suggesting that the maid might steal the Crown Prince's affection and didn't deserve it.

Que suggested that Su Ruomei report this to the Queen, offering the Queen's name as someone who could help. The Queen later summoned the residents of the Chongwen Academy, stating that although the academy was for teaching principles, someone had caused trouble and gossip. She ordered the arrest of Mei Yushan's maid. Douzi, still acting as the maid, was seized. She demanded to know her crime.

The Queen declared it a capital crime, accusing her of pulling her lady, feigning falling into the water, and seducing the Crown Prince. Douzi denied the accusations, asserting it was not true. The Queen ordered Mei Yushan (the actual Mei Yushan, who was trying to intervene) to be taken aside, finding her attempts to defend Douzi annoying. The Queen accused the "maid" (Douzi) of wishing to rise above her station.

Douzi, maintaining her guise as the maid, argued that she truly fell into the water as she could not swim, and if her goal was seduction, risking her life in such a way was illogical when other safer methods existed. The Queen then directly asked if she harbored feelings for the Crown Prince. Douzi emphatically denied it. Just then, Eunuch Song arrived, presenting a jade pendant found in the "maid's" (Douzi's) room.

Douzi was shocked, wondering how it ended up in the palace after she had given it to "that woman" (referring to the mysterious person she met at the Museum). The Queen demanded an explanation for possessing the Crown Prince's jade pendant if she had no affection for him.

Another maid then stepped forward, claiming she had overheard Douzi (as the maid) confess in her sleep to stealing the Moon Spirit Pearl from the Museum the night the Crown Prince stayed there. The maid presented the Moon Spirit Pearl as evidence, claiming to have found it in Douzi's room.

Bai Ye was present during this confrontation and, seeing the pearl, recognized it as the one he had been searching for, wondering if the prophecy related to the fishtail birthmark was indeed coming true and if Douzi was connected. The Queen, convinced by the evidence, declared the "maid" (Douzi) to be of poor character and guilty of two crimes, ordering her arrest. Xing Shi, witnessing the escalating situation, rushed to the Eastern Palace to find the Crown Prince, Nangong Yao.

He was told by Nanbei that the Crown Prince had left earlier to handle a case regarding fake refugees and had gone elsewhere. Unaware of his precise location, Xing Shi quickly tried to locate him. The Queen, stating she usually didn't use private punishment but deemed it necessary due to the maid's perceived malicious intent, ordered that Douzi be given fifty strokes with a paddle and expelled from the palace.

As the guards prepared to strike, Douzi screamed at them to stop and shielded Mei Yushan with her body, refusing to move. The Queen, asserting her authority, ordered the guards to drag Douzi away and strike her. Mei Yushan pleaded with Douzi to move aside, fearing for her life from the heavy punishment. Seeing Douzi's refusal and the apparent sisterly bond, the Queen, calling Douzi stubborn, ordered them to hit them both.

Douzi cried out in pain as the paddles began to fall. Just as the situation became dire, Nangong Yao arrived. An attendant, seeing him rush in, asked why he seemed panicked. Xing Shi had found him and informed him that Mei Yushan and her maid had been arrested and were in danger at the Chongwen Academy.

Upon his arrival, Bai Ye, also present and unable to bear seeing Mei Yushan treated this way, stepped forward to plead with the Queen for mercy for Mei Yushan, offering his Waning Moon Pendant as a token given to him by the Emperor that was said to ward off disaster. The Queen dismissed his plea, stating he was already a sinner and couldn't intercede for others.

Bai Ye argued that the Emperor had promised the token's power to protect him from disaster and hoped it could protect Mei Yushan. The Queen remained resolute, declaring that nothing would save the maid today, not even the Emperor himself. She ordered the guards to continue the punishment. Nangong Yao arrived and greeted the Queen. The Queen asked if he had come to plead for mercy.

Nangong Yao replied he was there for the show and asked if she was punishing them for yesterday's incident. The Queen confirmed this. Nangong Yao then suggested that mere physical punishment was too light and they deserved something heavier, like broken limbs or even death. The Queen was shocked by his words. Nangong Yao ordered an attendant to silence his mother.

He then explained that pushing Mei Yushan into the lake the previous day was simply him indulging in a playful whim. Her maid had jumped in to protect her and also fell. He admitted getting angry afterward because Mei Yushan didn't show proper deference. He asserted that as the Crown Prince, he had the authority to push anyone into the water if he wished. Therefore, his mother punishing them for him was entirely reasonable.

The Queen questioned him about the jade pendant found in the maid's room. Nangong Yao calmly stated that he had given it to her to make up for his actions. The Queen, still suspicious, accused him of protecting them and insisted that the maid's theft of the Moon Spirit Pearl was proven fact, adding that even his father couldn't save her now.

When the attendant presented the pearl found in the room, Nangong Yao explained that the pearl was originally in the eye socket of the Domestic Cat Monster statue in the Museum, but the other eye held a bodhi fruit, making it look strangely asymmetrical to him, so he had simply removed the pearl. He confirmed he had given the pearl to them, questioning Eunuch Song if he needed his permission to bestow gifts.

He dismissed the pearl as not valuable and said he gave it because they liked it, even offering to find more for the Queen if she was interested. The Queen, exasperated, told him it was enough and ordered him to step aside. Nangong Yao lingered, saying he wanted to continue watching the show. The Queen concluded that yesterday's matter was likely a misunderstanding and she would investigate further before making a final decision.

Nangong Yao protested, arguing that their disrespect towards him amounted to disrespect towards the royal family, a crime punishable by death for their entire clan. The Queen called his outburst absurd, reminding him that Prime Minister Mei was an important minister and his father's close confidant. Nangong Yao then proposed punishing Mei Yushan by making her perform hard labor in the Eastern Palace for a few months, claiming he would punish her severely there.

Ultimately, the Queen declared that due to Mei Yushan's public defiance, she would be punished by copying the palace rules fifty times at the Chongwen Academy. Her maid, for failing to protect her lady, would also be punished and forced to kneel alongside Mei Yushan until the copying was completed. The Queen then departed. Mei Yushan and Douzi began copying the rules. Mei Yushan copied late into the night until she was exhausted and fell asleep while kneeling.

Douzi, though pretending to be the maid being punished, also had to kneel and copy. She complained about having used an entire bottle of ink and still not being finished. Douzi wondered why the other maid had framed her for stealing the pearl and if Su Ruomei might be involved due to her closeness with Nangong Yao, but couldn't understand how they would know about the pearl or how the pendant reappeared in her room.

Later, Nangong Yao arrived at the Chongwen Academy, stating he was there to inspect on his mother's behalf. Attendants woke Douzi, telling her the Empress was inspecting. Douzi initially thought the Empress had sent a man to administer more punishment. Nangong Yao brought cushions for them to rest on and offered them food. During his visit, Nangong Yao made a gesture that Douzi recognized as a secret code used by her fathers.

Calling him "Little Master," she asked if he had left the palace that day. He confirmed he had, stating he had interrogated three thieves who were arrested about two weeks prior. He explained they had pretended to be refugees to claim relief funds and had stolen money meant for the real refugees. He revealed that he would personally oversee their decapitation the following day at noon. Meanwhile, Liu Qinyuan's plan was set in motion.

A messenger from Liu Qinyuan approached Shen Yu, the official responsible for the disaster relief case. The messenger conveyed Liu Qinyuan's desire for the case involving the fake refugees to be concluded swiftly. He informed Shen Yu that the Crown Prince would personally review the case again tomorrow at noon and decide whether to execute the men.

Shen Yu noted that the evidence against the three men was solid, but as the Crown Prince was in charge of the refugee hiring, having him execute the men would be politically damaging. The messenger stressed that the incident occurred within Shen Yu's jurisdiction and could become a problem in court. Shen Yu asked for Liu Qinyuan's specific instructions.

The messenger conveyed that Liu Qinyuan wanted Shen Yu to force confessions from the men and advance their execution to the Chen hour tomorrow. Shen Yu hesitated, but the messenger promised rewards if he succeeded and warned he would lose his position if he failed. Shen Yu eventually agreed, stating he would need to meet Liu Qinyuan.

The messenger reported back to Liu Qinyuan that Shen Yu had agreed and that arrangements had been made with the refugees and a witch. They confirmed that the news of the early execution would spread by morning. The witch's daughter was held, ensuring her cooperation. Liu Qinyuan noted that the execution would attract many refugees and ordered his men to mingle among them and incite chaos.

The plan was to frame the disaster as a sign of impending national destruction and label the Crown Prince as the source of misfortune. Knowing the refugees had lost family, a little incitement would easily lead them to cause trouble. Liu Qinyuan approved the plan, cautioning his subordinate to be extremely careful. His subordinate asked about arrangements in the imperial court.

Liu Qinyuan advised waiting, stating his family's deep-rooted influence would make it difficult for the Queen to easily remove him. The subordinate questioned why Liu Qinyuan chose to work with others against the Prince instead of aligning with him, given the Prince's favor with the Emperor and growing support among officials. Liu Qinyuan explained that an upright and decisive ruler like the Crown Prince would relentlessly eliminate corruption, leaving no place for old, self-serving officials like himself and his allies. He concluded that despite the uncertainty, they had to take this gamble to bring the Prince down to protect their own positions.

Episode 15 Recap

Seeing a token left by her adoptive fathers on Nangong Yao's sleeve, Douzi inquires about the outcome of the matter involving the disguised refugees. Nangong Yao informs her that the three men are scheduled for decapitation the following day. Distressed, Douzi insists on accompanying him, suggesting she could disguise herself as a eunuch or a coachman. Nangong Yao refuses, telling her she is currently grounded and that such a place is inappropriate for her, urging her to rest instead.

After Nangong Yao leaves, Douzi expresses her deep concern for her fathers' lives to Mei Yushan. She confirms their identity, mentioning a secret drawing that serves as their code. She explains her reluctance to reveal their true relationship to Nangong Yao earlier, fearing he would be put in a difficult position by knowing his close acquaintance had three "thieving" fathers.

They discuss the urgent need to leave the palace, acknowledging the challenge posed by the ever-present guards due to their grounded status. At that moment, Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang arrive outside, calling out to Mei Yushan in a mocking tone, assuming she is having a terrible time. Douzi seizes this as an opportunity.

Using Mei Yushan's maid as a front, they convey to the guards and the two women that Mei Yushan is fine, having just been visited by the Crown Prince who brought food and gifts, and is now sleeping after eating too much. Skeptical, Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang decide to enter the room to verify the story.

Meanwhile, Bai Ye receives a report revealing that the maid is not genuinely from the Mei family, has no registered identity, and grew up in the capital as a petty thief, having been brought into the palace privately by Douzi. Bai Ye notes Douzi's act of risking her life to save her, observing their close relationship, and expresses concern that the woman Douzi saved might be a potential threat.

Determined to escape, Douzi and Mei Yushan discuss the risks involved in drawing attention. Douzi insists on taking the lead, prioritizing the mission to save her fathers. Using their new disguises, they pass the initial guards. They spot a carriage belonging to the Eastern Palace and quickly form a plan to hide inside. Heading to the stable, they each conceal themselves in separate carriages, agreeing that whoever reaches the execution ground first must act to save the men.

Douzi hides herself in Nangong Yao's carriage. Separately, Mei Yushan finds Guard Xingshi and asks him to take her to the Government Office. Elsewhere, Bai Ye senses that the Crown Prince is in danger and instructs his guard, Lingxiao, to immediately head to the execution ground. Early the next morning, Douzi's three adoptive fathers are roughly forced to sign confessions and are swiftly led away for execution, which has been moved up from the scheduled noon time.

Douzi wakes up hidden in Nangong Yao's carriage. Realizing their destination is not the Government Office, she experiences a strong intuition that something is wrong and urgently pleads with Nangong Yao to divert their course. Despite his initial reluctance and offer to let her watch an execution later, she insists they must go to the government office immediately, fearing the execution will be advanced.

Upon their arrival, Nangong Yao and Douzi hear the devastating news that the execution is already commencing. Douzi charges through the gathered crowd and onto the execution platform. Just as the executioner prepares to strike, she cries out, declaring the three men's innocence and stopping the proceedings. Shen Yu, the official presiding over the execution, is startled and demands to know who she is, ordering her arrest for disrupting the court.

Douzi confronts the accuser, Ding Ermao, who stands nearby insisting the men stole his money and were caught with it. Douzi fiercely challenges his accusation, asking if he saw them steal it, which he admits he did not, and pointing out they were working together when the theft occurred, making it impossible for them to commit the crime then.

Shen Yu becomes increasingly agitated and repeats his order to arrest Douzi, but he is silenced when Nangong Yao arrives and gives him a commanding look. As the crowd outside the government office grows larger and more agitated, individuals begin inciting the people, demanding the immediate beheading of the three accused thieves. Adding to the turmoil, a woman claiming to be a prophetess appears, making dramatic pronouncements.

She declares that the Crown Prince carries a dark aura, asserting that a prophecy from over a decade ago foretold his love for Shengdong's princess would lead to Jixi's ruin. She points to the recent earthquake as a clear sign of this prophecy unfolding and claims that if he ascends to the throne, Jixi will be destroyed, holding him responsible for the current disaster.

The crowd, inflamed by her words, turns hostile, chanting slogans against the Crown Prince and demanding his execution. Just as the situation reaches a fever pitch and the crowd surges forward, Mei Yushan and Xingshi arrive at the scene. Seeing the escalating danger, Mei Yushan rushes towards Douzi to protect her. A large ceremonial drum is knocked over in the melee, threatening to crush Mei Yushan.

Xingshi quickly shoves her out of harm's way, shielding her from the falling drum with his body and injuring his hand on a protruding nail. Complete chaos erupts among the people. Amidst the confusion, a man dressed in black subtly draws a dagger from his sleeve and advances towards Nangong Yao. Dongxi, ever vigilant, spots the attacker and kicks him away. The man recovers and charges again, this time wielding a wooden stool.

Douzi, seeing the danger, instinctively throws herself onto Nangong Yao's back, shielding him with her own body. The stool strikes her, rendering her unconscious. Guards swiftly surround the attacker, who, rather than be captured, swallows a hidden poison and dies. Nangong Yao carefully lifts the unconscious Douzi and carries her back into the relative safety of the government.

Inside, Shen Yu immediately kneels before Nangong Yao, expressing his profound apologies for failing to protect him from the attack and requesting punishment. Nangong Yao assures him he is unharmed and tells him to rise, adding that if punishment is necessary, Shen Yu should seek it from the injured Douzi.

Shen Yu then turns to Douzi, who is beginning to regain consciousness, and humbly apologizes for the day's events, thanking her profusely for her courageous act of shielding the Crown Prince and offering himself for her judgment. Douzi, still recovering, tells him it is alright and to get up. Her primary concern remains her adoptive fathers, and she urgently asks Shen Yu about their safety and location.

Both Nangong Yao and Shen Yu are clearly astonished to hear her refer to the accused men in this way. Douzi clarifies that they are her adoptive fathers. Understanding the situation, Shen Yu promptly brings the three men forward: Big Head Yu, Que Kuai'er, and Xia Xiaodan. Shen Yu hosts a dinner for the three adoptive fathers to help them recover from their harrowing experience.

Douzi is overjoyed to be reunited with them, and they express immense relief and affection for her, acknowledging that the signal drawing left by one of them allowed Douzi to find them. They explain their reason for taking the strange job was the hope of seeing Douzi, as they had heard she was in the palace.

Shen Yu confirms their story, stating that they were indeed the only ones willing to take on the labor recruitment contract when the refugees refused. Initially served a spread of refined cold dishes, the three men, used to a simpler, heartier diet, express their dissatisfaction and loudly demand generous portions of meat, fish, chicken, duck, beef, shrimp, pork legs, and multiple bottles of wine. Nangong Yao agrees to their requests, and Shen Yu arranges for a more suitable feast.

As they enjoy the abundant food, the three men chat and joke freely, completely unaware of Nangong Yao's true identity. They make light of Shen Yu and playfully compare Nangong Yao to a minor official like a deputy village chief, confidently stating he couldn't possibly be the Crown Prince. Unable to watch their unguarded irreverence any longer, Douzi finally declares that Nangong Yao is, in fact, the Crown Prince.

The three men are struck with terror and immediately fall to their knees, profusely apologizing for their earlier comments. Douzi tells them to get up, reassuring them there is nothing to fear. Once they tentatively resume their seats, they begin whispering excitedly to Douzi about the possibility of her becoming the Crown Princess. They enthusiastically speculate about becoming the Crown Prince's fathers-in-law and the potential for gaining official positions, like becoming a mayor.

Nangong Yao asks Douzi how she came to be named Douzi. Her fathers eagerly interrupt, launching into a boisterous and often contradictory account of finding her as a baby in a box, arguing loudly about who actually discovered her and raised her, mentioning feeding her soy milk made from soybeans, and recounting her childhood habit of always carrying soybeans in her pocket. During the chaos at the execution ground, Mei Yushan expresses her concern for Douzi's safety to Xingshi.

Xingshi reassures her that Douzi is likely fine, perhaps just a little sore. Mei Yushan thanks Xingshi for his quick action in saving her from the falling drum. Xingshi downplays it, calling it his duty, but Mei Yushan points out that this is not the first time he has come to her aid. She then asks him about a night she was sick with a cold and had the distinct feeling someone had visited her room.

Xingshi acknowledges he was there, assuring her he had no malicious intent and apologizing if his presence disturbed her. Mei Yushan quickly clarifies that she did not mean to imply anything negative by her question. Xingshi then notes that Mei Yushan herself also sustained injuries during the tumultuous events.

Episode 16 Recap

Mei Yushan returned to the Guixiu Pavilion, where Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang immediately confronted her, demanding to know why she had knocked them out. Mei Yushan claimed they had merely bumped their heads on the doorframe. Shortly after, Douzi arrived, being carried by the Crown Prince, Nangong Yao. Seeing this, Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang's expressions changed. When Douzi appeared dismissive of them, they threatened to report her to the Empress.

Nangong Yao arrived more formally, and Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang accused Mei Yushan and her maid of escaping confinement, asking for severe punishment. Nangong Yao clarified that Douzi had been with him on official business. Zhuang Yangyang continued to press the matter, which Nangong Yao interpreted as an attempt to create discord between him and the Empress.

Nangong Yao then checked on Douzi, noting her injury and telling her she would not go to the academy but would rest and be cared for. Mei Yushan attempted to prepare medicine or soup for Douzi, awkwardly trying to manage a live chicken. Nanbei offered to help clean Douzi's face, but Mei Yushan stopped him citing the impropriety of physical contact between men and women.

Witnessing Mei Yushan's clumsy attempts at care, Nangong Yao decided to take Douzi to the Eastern Palace for her recovery, instructing Nanbei to prepare a carriage. Mei Yushan commented on the importance of maintaining proper conduct, citing classical texts on propriety even when in love. Meanwhile, elsewhere, discussion arose about the Emperor's illness and the Crown Prince's recent troubles.

The Empress was reportedly displeased that all the best supplements, including wild ginseng and lingzhi, were being sent to the Eastern Palace for "Miss Mei," who was deemed frail. In the Eastern Palace, Douzi grew tired of the continuous supplements, which even caused nosebleeds. She expressed a desire for food she actually liked, specifically requesting pig intestines and stinky tofu, asking for it to be extra smelly and spicy.

The servants found this request unusual for the palace but had to comply. Nangong Yao was shown reviewing official petitions, dismissing proposals such as halting funds for a perpetually unfinished bridge, banning rural students from imperial exams, fining childless families, and halving the wages of lower officials. Amidst this, Nanbei reported Douzi's peculiar culinary demands, adding her request for a swing. Nangong Yao approved every request, stating Douzi could do anything as long as she didn't demolish the Eastern Palace.

The servants, including Zuo and You, were depicted gagging from the smell while preparing the pig intestines. Douzi offered them some of the food, but they declined, citing their low status. Nanbei reported to Nangong Yao that the individuals who had caused a disturbance at the execution ground had committed suicide by poison before they could be interrogated.

Nangong Yao stated he knew who was truly responsible for trying to harm him, identifying Liu Qinyuan as the mastermind, noting his unusual silence when other officials were vocally impeaching the Crown Prince. As they spoke, Nangong Yao noticed a strong odor, which was the stinky food being cooked for Douzi. Separately, Ling Xiao suggested to Bai Ye that they should inform the Crown Prince that Mei Yushan's maid was the Shengdong princess.

Bai Ye strongly disagreed, fearing this revelation would expose Douzi and implicate the entire Mei family, and resolved to find a way to protect Douzi. Officials conversed about Mei Yushan's behavior in the Eastern Palace, mentioning she had hosted a "stinky food banquet" that had left everyone, including the Crown Prince, smelling unpleasant. They saw her influence over the Crown Prince as disruptive and plotted to use accusations of "bewitching the lord" to cause trouble for Nangong Yao.

They noted that if Nangong Yao were to marry Mei Yushan, it would foil their plans regarding the prophecy and the issue of him taking other consorts. Douzi, nearing recovery, was informed by the Grand Tutor about a special medicine that would be most effective on the upcoming full moon night. Hearing this, Douzi remembered the body switch and considered attempting to swap back with Mei Yushan on the full moon.

Meanwhile, Xing Shi visited Mei Yushan (currently inhabited by Douzi) daily, ostensibly to deliver medicine. He inquired about her three adoptive fathers and her childhood, specifically asking if she was found in Black Dog Alley and how old she was. Douzi answered evasively. Xing Shi then presented her with stinky tofu, commenting that he brought it because she grew up in Black Dog Alley and might like it.

Douzi found the smell familiar and, tasting it, mentioned it was from "Ms. Xing's," which reminded her of childhood. Xing Shi, who seemed to have been nearby, perhaps behind a screen, accidentally dropped a handkerchief. Douzi found it, assumed it was Mei Yushan's, and called out for Mei Daidai, suggesting they seize the opportunity of the full moon to try switching back.

Mei Yushan then entered the room, and Xing Shi stepped out from behind the screen and politely excused himself. Afterward, Douzi pondered why Xing Shi was so interested in her past and Black Dog Alley. Unseen by Douzi, Xing Shi had clearly heard her mention the body switch and was shown later contemplating the idea of switching bodies.

Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) saw documents detailing criticisms of "Mei Yushan" for causing disruption in the Eastern Palace, reflecting the sentiments discussed by the officials. Upset by these accusations and feeling unworthy, she walked without looking where she was going and nearly stepped on the Grand Tutor's delicate medicinal herbs. Bai Ye quickly caught her, preventing her from falling or damaging the herbs. Nangong Yao arrived and witnessed Bai Ye holding Douzi.

Appearing jealous, he took Douzi from Bai Ye, insisting she was still injured and needed careful handling as a patient. He then instructed Zuo to prepare tea for Bai Ye before taking Douzi away. Separately, Xing Shi sought out General Wang to confirm if the Moon Spirit Pearl could indeed cause two people to switch bodies.

General Wang recalled an event from approximately forty years prior where an imperial son-in-law used the pearl for his wife's headdress, leading to a drastic change in his temperament and the jeweler he hired claiming to be the son-in-law. Xing Shi took this historical account as confirmation of his theory about the pearl's effect.

Later, Douzi began packing her belongings, feeling out of place in the Eastern Palace and believing she was causing trouble and did not deserve to be near Nangong Yao. Nangong Yao confronted her. He misinterpreted her desire to leave as either a consequence of the negative talk about "Mei Yushan" or because she had developed feelings for Bai Ye and wanted to return to the Guixiu Pavilion.

He argued that he didn't care about her background or lack of manners, suggesting she could learn them. However, Douzi insisted she was inherently a wild commoner who never aimed for such a high station and simply wanted to return to the Guixiu Pavilion. Visibly upset by her insistence and departure, Nangong Yao instructed Nanbei to escort her back. Subsequently, Nangong Yao was observed looking distracted during his studies, clearly affected by the recent events and Douzi's departure.

Episode 17 Recap

Mei Yushan was absent from her studies for several days. Upon inquiring, Nangong Yao learned from Eunuch Song that she had been summoned by the Empress to Huacai Hall to learn court etiquette in preparation for potentially becoming the Crown Princess. The Empress tasked Douzi, who was in Mei Yushan's body, with embroidery. Douzi's attempt was substandard, and she offered unconventional information about distinguishing male and female geese for cooking.

Displeased with Douzi's lack of refinement and manners, the Empress ordered her to practice balance by placing precious vases, including a Dragon-patterned Jade Vase, on her head. Douzi found it impossible to stand steady and accidentally shattered several vases. Nangong Yao arrived at Huacai Hall to visit the Empress and found Douzi distressed among the broken pieces. He checked on her, and she apologized for the damage.

The Empress, having heard of Mei Yushan's supposed proficiency in the Four Arts, asked her to demonstrate one. Douzi, feeling she was unskilled in all of them, resigned herself to her fate. Nangong Yao subtly signaled to her, suggesting she choose Go, which he believed might be easier to bluff through. Their exchange of glances did not escape the Empress's notice.

During the Go demonstration, Douzi failed to grasp the rules and even used the Empress's black pieces against her own white ones, declaring 'Checkmate,' much to the Empress's disdain. The Empress concluded that someone like Douzi was unfit to be the Crown Princess. Afterwards, Douzi thanked Nangong Yao for his attempt to help her. At Chongwen Academy, Nangong Yao wore a white robe. Douzi, noticing this, remarked on how he looked like Bai Ye, whom she mentioned frequently.

Nangong Yao seemed slightly annoyed by this comparison but accompanied her to class. An announcement was made that Chongwen Academy would close for the Double Seventh Festival in three days, allowing students to attend temple fairs outside the palace. Douzi was overjoyed at the prospect of seeing her adoptive fathers.

Nangong Yao, planning a special surprise for Douzi, confirmed with an attendant that he had arranged to rent an entire street for the festival, agreeing to the high cost and stressing that Douzi must not discover his plan. Meanwhile, Bai Ye revealed a divination predicting the downfall of the Jixi Kingdom and the Crown Prince's exile. He believed the threat stemmed from the maid brought into the palace by Mei Yushan (referring to Douzi).

To protect Mei Yushan and prevent Douzi from being implicated, Bai Ye decided not to report the prediction. He concluded that the only way to ensure the safety of the Crown Prince and Douzi was the death of the maid. Ling Xiao offered to carry out this task on the night of the Double Seventh Festival, amidst the large crowds, stating he also had someone he wished to protect.

On the night of the Double Seventh Festival, Mei Yushan and Douzi went out to enjoy the temple fair. While they were browsing, a child approached Mei Yushan, asking for help for his sick sister in an alley. As Mei Yushan was about to follow the child, she spotted Xing Shi acting furtively. She told the child to seek out a physician instead and discreetly followed Xing Shi. Separately, Douzi was briefly seized but was left unharmed in another street.

She quickly made her way to the bustling market and was thrilled to unexpectedly run into her three adoptive fathers. After an emotional reunion, her fathers revealed that their meeting was not a coincidence but had been orchestrated by the Crown Prince, who had rented the entire street to facilitate their special reunion. Douzi was astonished and saw that the people around them treated her with respect. Soon after, Nangong Yao appeared.

He thanked the fathers and took Douzi to see a breathtaking fireworks display he had arranged just for her. Overwhelmed by his thoughtfulness, Douzi asked if he would still care for her if she were her original self (not in Mei Yushan's body) or if she were physically unattractive. Nangong Yao professed his unconditional and eternal love for her, regardless of her identity, status, or appearance. Believing his sincerity, they embraced and kissed.

Meanwhile, Mei Yushan's pursuit led her to a courtyard where Xing Shi was meeting with subordinates. She overheard them confirming the discovery of the Shengdong Princess, identified as Douzi, currently living as the Grand Chancellor's daughter. Her presence was detected, and Xing Shi confronted her. He revealed his true identity as a Shengdong Young General whose father, General Xuan Bing, had killed Jixi's former Emperor.

He explained that he had been searching for the missing Shengdong Princess for years, which led him to work as a guard for Nangong Yao, a path suggested by Bai Ye's prediction. He confirmed that Que was his subordinate. Xing Shi admitted he had initially suspected Mei Yushan was the Princess but later confirmed it was Douzi based on a distinctive mark and items found among her belongings.

He clarified that his earlier concern for Mei Yushan stemmed from genuine feelings, not just the belief she was the Princess. He revealed he knew about the body switch and, with the Moon Spirit Pearl now broken, believed they might not be able to revert. Fearing the danger if Douzi's identity as the Shengdong Princess were revealed in Jixi, Xing Shi proposed secretly taking both Douzi and Mei Yushan out of the palace and back to Shengdong for safety.

He reiterated his commitment to protecting the Princess and now, Mei Yushan, declaring he would give his life for her. He asked Mei Yushan if she would leave with him. Mei Yushan, acknowledging her status as the daughter of the Jixi Prime Minister, stated that eloping with a general from an enemy state was inappropriate. She declined his offer for now, expressing her desire to return to the Eastern Palace to find Douzi. Xing Shi agreed to escort her. As they left the courtyard, they were secretly observed by Ling Xiao.

Episode 18 Recap

Xing Shi escorted Mei Yushan to the entrance of the Eastern Palace, suggesting she enter first to avoid any gossip affecting his reputation. He planned to join her shortly. Meanwhile, Nanbei and Dōngxī were stationed at a post waiting for the Crown Prince when they saw Mei Yushan leave swiftly in the company of Bai Ye and Ling Xiao, leading them to speculate about a secret mission.

Xing Shi approached them, inquiring if Mei Yushan had returned to the Eastern Palace. When they described seeing her leave with Bai Ye, Xing Shi felt a sense of foreboding and immediately left the palace grounds to search for her. Bai Ye brought Mei Yushan into the Astronomical Bureau and confronted her fiercely.

He demanded to know her true identity, the meaning of the fishtail-shaped mark on her shoulder, and why she had come into the palace and gotten close to the Crown Prince, accusing her of trying to fulfill the prophecy foretelling the destruction of Jixi Kingdom. Mei Yushan realized he had mistaken her for Princess Yueying. She denied his accusations, pointing out that if she intended to harm the Crown Prince, she had ample opportunity long before.

She admitted that she and Douzi had come to the palace seeking the Moon Spirit Pearl but claimed she could not reveal more, as it would endanger Douzi's life. Intrigued by Douzi's connection, Bai Ye pressed her relentlessly.

After making him swear he would protect Douzi and keep their secret, Mei Yushan confessed the startling truth: they had switched bodies due to the Moon Spirit Pearl, meaning the person known as Mei Yushan was actually the original Mei Yushan, and the person known as Douzi was originally Princess Yueying, who had swapped places with her. Bai Ye was stunned by this revelation, now understanding that Douzi was the true princess.

He explained that while killing the person currently bearing the mark might not necessarily prevent the prophecy, failing to do so would surely result in Douzi's death. He then prepared to act, but Xing Shi arrived at the Astronomical Bureau just in time, stating he was looking for Mei Yushan. Despite Bai Ye attempting to block his entry, Xing Shi entered, intervened, preventing Bai Ye from harming Mei Yushan, and swiftly pulled her out of the room.

As Xing Shi led Mei Yushan out of the Astronomical Bureau, they abruptly encountered Nangong Yao and Douzi arriving. Douzi instantly stepped in front of Mei Yushan protectively. Nangong Yao demanded Bai Ye lower his weapon and explain the situation. Bai Ye remained unyielding, declaring that he must kill Mei Yushan that day for Nangong Yao's sake and that he would accept any punishment afterward. Douzi repeatedly pleaded with Bai Ye to drop the dagger.

Nangong Yao, observing Bai Ye's unusual and intense behavior, questioned his motives given their long history of friendship, asking if he truly intended to kill her for his and Douzi's sake. Bai Ye insisted it was so but refused to provide further details. Amidst the tense exchange, Douzi, who had been desperately urging Bai Ye to stop, suddenly collapsed.

Mei Yushan returned to her quarters and spoke with Xing Shi, cautiously asking why he had saved her life again, especially now that he knew she was not the princess. Xing Shi replied simply that he did not want her to be hurt and that she was someone he wished to protect alongside Douzi. Mei Yushan questioned why Bai Ye still intended to kill her even after learning about the body switch.

Xing Shi speculated that Bai Ye was even more determined to protect Douzi, perhaps believing that eliminating the person currently carrying the fishtail mark was the way to avert Jixi's destruction as foretold by the prophecy, or that it was necessary to safeguard the Crown Prince. Xing Shi reassured her that Bai Ye had refrained from revealing Douzi's true identity to Nangong Yao during the confrontation and likely would not do so in the future, suggesting Douzi was temporarily safe.

However, he stressed that Bai Ye was unlikely to abandon his intentions and strongly urged that Mei Yushan and Douzi must leave the palace without delay. Mei Yushan expressed her deep gratitude for his help and offered to repay the life debt, but Xing Shi reiterated the urgency of their immediate departure. For his impulsive and discourteous actions, Bai Ye was confined to the Astronomical Bureau under house arrest for six months, with the mansion sealed and guards posted.

Passing by the Astronomical Bureau, Nangong Yao discussed Bai Ye's punishment with his Grand Tutor. The Grand Tutor remarked on the turmoil caused by the prophecy, which had led ministers to demand Nangong Yao's removal and caused the Empress great distress. Nangong Yao inquired if the Grand Tutor also believed he would lead to Jixi's downfall.

The Grand Tutor replied that he dared not say so, but acknowledged that Bai Ye's predictions had historically been accurate and that the ministers trusted his judgment. Nangong Yao mused that perhaps if he simply chose never to fall in love with a Shengdong princess, or indeed anyone, he could break the prophecy. The Grand Tutor spoke of the uncontrollable nature of love and its history of stirring conflict.

Nangong Yao found it perplexing that he, who could command armies and influence the destiny of individuals and nations, seemed unable to control his own affections. The Grand Tutor suggested this was a matter he would come to understand as he matured. Nangong Yao summoned Douzi and Mei Yushan to discuss their situation, particularly Mei Yushan's safety and future in the palace now that their body switch was known and her life was threatened.

He recognized that Mei Yushan, with her current appearance (Douzi's original appearance), was in an unsuitable and dangerous position as a maid. He offered to help her return to the Mei residence if that was her wish. Mei Yushan responded that returning to her family in her current form would be impossible to explain. She firmly stated her desire to remain with Douzi, sharing whatever difficulties they faced.

Douzi strongly supported this, declaring she didn't need another maid and emphasizing her profound bond with Mei Yushan, insisting they must stay together. Respecting their decision, Nangong Yao assured them he would find another way to protect them. Douzi affectionately reinforced her loyalty to Mei Yushan, describing their mutual commitment to stay together regardless of circumstances. Douzi suddenly recalled Bai Ye's attempt on Mei Yushan's life and asked her why he had done it.

Xing Shi appeared unexpectedly, having overheard their conversation. Mei Yushan quickly cautioned Xing Shi to remain silent. Xing Shi then produced a map or route, instructing them that if they truly wished to understand the reason behind Bai Ye's actions, they should find a way to leave the city at the same hour the following day and meet him.

He explained he believed Douzi deserved to know the truth and promised that after they left the city, he would not try to force them into any specific decision. At that moment, Nangong Yao's attendant arrived to summon Douzi to see the Crown Prince. Xing Shi and Mei Yushan then departed ahead of Douzi. Nangong Yao spoke with his mother, the Empress, requesting her permission to designate Douzi as his Crown Princess.

The Empress vehemently opposed this, believing Douzi lacked the virtue and bearing required to manage the imperial household and serve as a future Empress. She suggested instead making Douzi a concubine to silence gossip, while they sought a more suitable candidate for the position of Crown Princess. Nangong Yao argued that true virtue lay in qualities like bravery, righteousness, kindness, and loyalty, all of which Douzi possessed, having even protected him with her own life.

He declared that if Douzi became his consort, he would never take other wives, thus negating the Empress's concerns about managing a harem. When the Empress remained resolute in her refusal, Nangong Yao firmly stated that if he could not marry Douzi as his Crown Princess, he would remain unmarried throughout his life. Angered by his defiance, the Empress decided to postpone the decision and discuss the matter with the Emperor.

Douzi secretly left the palace and was met by Xing Shi, who guided her to a secluded shrine containing many memorial tablets without names inscribed on them. Xing Shi revealed these were the spirits of Shengdong's fallen royalty and subjects, including Emperor Dingning and Empress Li, Douzi's parents, and his own father, who would have been present in her life had the kingdom not been destroyed. Announcing himself as Shengdong's Young General, Xing Shi then addressed Douzi as Princess Yueying.

Douzi reacted with shock and disbelief, thinking he was mistaken or playing a trick, insisting she was an orphan who grew up in the capital's Black Dog Alley and knew nothing about Shengdong. Xing Shi swore upon the spirits before them that he spoke the truth, recounting the events of Shengdong's demise eighteen years prior. He described how Empress Li had entrusted the infant princess to his father, who fled with both children.

When they were pursued, his father left Douzi with Xing Shi, who was forced to hide her in a box carried by an escort team by the road while his father returned to fight, only to find the team gone upon his return.

Xing Shi provided specific, verifiable details about the box's contents, including a handkerchief embroidered with lilies of the valley (Shengdong's national flower), clay pots cushioned with rice beans, and a pink rattle drum, mentioning he had also marked the outside of the box. Douzi was astonished by the accuracy of these details, questioning how he knew them, prompting Xing Shi to point to the fishtail-shaped mark she had carried since birth as further confirmation.

Finally accepting the truth of her identity, Douzi asked how this connected to Bai Ye's attempt on Mei Yushan's life. Xing Shi explained that Bai Ye knew about their body switch and was targeting the person who currently bore the fishtail mark – which was Douzi, in Mei Yushan's body – because "she" was the Princess foretold by the prophecy to bring about Jixi's destruction. Douzi was horrified by this revelation.

Xing Shi urged her and Mei Yushan, who was present, not to return to the palace now that they were outside the city. He pleaded with her to return to Shengdong, where surviving former officials eagerly awaited her to help rebuild their homeland. Douzi hesitated, expressing fear that if Nangong Yao discovered her true identity, he might turn against her or even kill her.

Mei Yushan and Xing Shi attempted to reassure her that they would not reveal her secret, noting Bai Ye had kept silent despite his punishment. However, Mei Yushan admitted that Bai Ye, knowing about the switch, might still pose a threat. Xing Shi pressed Douzi not to return to the palace, warning that if she were to meet Nangong Yao again, they might be regarded as enemies due to the prophecy. Douzi refused to accept this possibility.

Xing Shi implored both her and Mei Yushan to gravely consider returning to Shengdong with him, mentioning that former Shengdong subordinates were nearby and ready to provide assistance. Douzi, however, remained steadfast in her refusal to return to Shengdong.

Episode 19 Recap

The students at Chongwen Academy had heard rumors that Crown Prince Nangong Yao intended to request the Empress to choose a Crown Princess and were curious about the kind of woman he liked. Nangong Yao described her personality as "quite adorable," mentioned she was from a "decent family," and humorously noted she loved to eat delicious food. Huang Yuanyuan and Zhuang Yangyang, among other young ladies present, eagerly tried to embody these qualities.

Nangong Yao started to say the person he had in mind seemed "far away, but she's right. . ." before stopping, saying they would find out later. When he looked towards Douzi's usual seat, he noticed she wasn't there. The students then discussed whether the Empress would agree to his choice, but Nangong Yao stated his determination, saying no matter if his mother agreed, he had decided and would not change his mind.

They also commented on his preference for symmetry and speculated lightheartedly about where the Crown Princess would sleep after marriage, concluding "In the middle, of course." Later, Douzi entered the academy by herself, appearing lost in thought as she sat down. Nangong Yao approached her from behind and offered to teach her to write a character that was missing a stroke.

He told her not to worry about fixing it right away, because after she married into the Eastern Palace, he would have plenty of time to teach her. Douzi remained silent, but tears welled up and fell from her eyes. She then stood up and left the academy. Other students whispered, wondering if she was shy or thought Nangong Yao had embarrassed her. That night, Nangong Yao was troubled by Douzi's coldness and the way she had "pushed me away."

He questioned Nanbei, wondering if the talented young men in Black Dog Alley were "a hundred times better" than him. Nanbei reassured him that Black Dog Alley only had people like the knife sharpener Zhang Ermazi and the butcher Li Kui, with no talented young men. Nangong Yao seemed slightly relieved. Early the next morning, before dawn, Nangong Yao got up to make mutton soup himself.

He told a sleepy Nanbei he was making it as a "breakfast out of love." He rushed his servants for fresh ingredients and then made Nanbei, Dongxi, and another servant taste the soup, asking for their feedback, which they gave awkwardly amidst forced smiles and compliments. Later that morning, Nangong Yao approached Douzi, who was standing apart from other young ladies. He asked how she had slept and if she was angry with him or had missed breakfast.

He offered her the mutton soup he had made, emphasizing that he had made it himself. Douzi looked away and told him, "Don't do it again." When he asked if she didn't like it and offered to make something else, she simply replied, "No need. You are the Crown Prince. Don't you have other things to do?" She called for Mei Yushan, and they prepared to leave.

As she walked away, Douzi quietly apologized to Nangong Yao, saying, "Sorry, I've failed you." Nangong Yao was clearly hurt by her rejection. Back in the palace, Nangong Yao was visibly angry. Servants tried to stop him as he threw and broke objects. Nanbei urged him to calm down, reminding him that anger hurts his health and offering himself to be hit instead to help him feel better.

Nangong Yao eventually decided to practice archery to distract himself, ordering Dongxi to join him. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan spoke with Douzi, seemingly trying to counsel her regarding her relationship with the Crown Prince. Separately, Bai Ye observed the celestial phenomena. He mused aloud, questioning why Douzi would cause Jixi's destruction and why she would make the Crown Prince a prisoner. He wondered why he could only foresee the outcome but not the reason.

He concluded that while the situation was a crisis, there was "still a chance." He thought that if Douzi knew her connection to the Crown Prince meant disaster and was willing to leave the palace and him, the prophecy could be broken. In the academy, Douzi continued to act distant, seeming like a "totally different person." Nangong Yao again approached her, asking the reason for her change and offering to take her outside the palace if she was unhappy.

She refused his offer and insisted she had nothing to say to him. Observers commented on the situation, noting how difficult Douzi was being and advising Nangong Yao to remain calm and give her space. Meanwhile, planning was underway to help Mei Yushan and Douzi leave the palace. Someone, seemingly involved in arranging their departure, discussed the preparations, stating that all was ready except for an issue at the city gate where the guard had been unexpectedly replaced.

He planned to seek help from Su Shenhai, Su Ruomei's father, to smooth the way, acknowledging that if the two left, the Mei family and the court would investigate, meaning they absolutely could not remain in the palace. Nangong Yao was in low spirits. He practiced archery in the heavy rain, refusing Nanbei's pleas to stop and seek shelter. At the same time, invitations for the Mid-Autumn Festival Dinner were being distributed to the young ladies.

Zhuang Yangyang and Huang Yuanyuan expressed their excitement and speculated about the possibility of becoming the Crown Princess, as the Empress was inviting all the eligible young women to the event. Douzi received a message from Bai Ye asking her to meet him at the Tianji Mansion, stating the matter was important and he would not harm her. She went to meet him. Bai Ye referenced their first meeting at the Tianji Mansion, looking at the stars.

Douzi prompted him, knowing he hadn't asked her there just for pleasantries. He asked if she was still angry about his past actions (implied to be related to Mei Daidai), and she admitted she still hated him for hurting Mei Daidai, though she understood he had been trying to protect her and her "Little Master." Bai Ye reiterated his regret for his impulsiveness and promised to protect her "whoever you are."

He explained that he knew she was the one in the prophecy and that if she were anyone else, he would eliminate her to break it, but he couldn't do it to "her". Douzi expressed disbelief that she would ever harm her "Little Master" or cause Jixi's destruction, questioning the very idea.

Bai Ye insisted that the prophecy showed this would happen but offered "only one way" to protect both her and the Prince: if she would allow him to take her away from the palace and the Crown Prince, the prophecy would be broken. He then confessed his love for her, explaining he had fallen for her since their first meeting and that she had brightened his life.

He offered to use his Waning Moon Pendant to request the Emperor's permission for them to leave the palace together. Douzi refused, explaining that she only saw him as a good friend and that her heart had no room for anyone else, implicitly filled by the Prince. Despite knowing the prophetic outcome, she stated, "I know what I have to do."

As Douzi was returning, she overheard servants discussing how the Crown Prince had been punished by the Empress to kneel in the rain for two hours and had since returned to the Eastern Palace with a fever, needing ginger water bags. Worried, Douzi secretly went to the Eastern Palace. She found Nangong Yao in bed, clearly ill. Watching him, she spoke softly as if he were dreaming, wondering what he was thinking.

She reflected on how much she had wanted to leave the palace when she first arrived, but now wished she could stay just one more day. She spoke words of tender goodbye, advising him on taking care of himself and disregarding criticism, saying she knew he would miss her but someone better would eventually love him. She asked him to keep a small place for her in his heart.

She touched his forehead, noting how hot it was from being in the rain. Nangong Yao stirred in his sleep, murmuring her name, "Douzi, don't go. Don't go. I believe you are not a siren." Douzi said "Goodbye, Little Master" one last time and left just as Nanbei entered to inform Nangong Yao that the Emperor was critically ill and required him at the Yangxin Hall immediately. That evening, the Mid-Autumn Dinner was held.

Zhuang Yangyang attempted to sit next to Nangong Yao, who politely allowed it. The Empress arrived and announced that despite the Emperor's critical illness, the dinner was proceeding because she had an important announcement. She explained that due to the Emperor's long illness and lack of a cure, ministers had suggested following the folk custom of "counteracting bad luck" by selecting a Crown Princess quickly.

The Empress then announced that Mei Yushan, the only daughter of Grand Chancellor Mei Changjing, would be made the Crown Princess. Nangong Yao was visibly shocked. The Empress instructed Zhuang Yangyang to yield her seat to Mei Yushan. Nangong Yao immediately spoke up, declaring that if his mother did not think "she" (referring to Mei Yushan) was worthy, then she would not be Crown Princess.

The Empress was taken aback, and he threatened to ask the Emperor to dethrone him if she insisted. The Empress expressed her fear and the immense pressure she faced daily in the dangerous palace, citing Bai Ye's prophecy as a severe threat to their position. Calling Nangong Yao's words heartbreaking, she ordered him to leave and kneel for two hours as punishment.

Ministers then advised the Empress that the Chongxi custom was a valid approach given the Emperor's condition and that Mei Yushan, as the Grand Chancellor's daughter, was a suitable candidate. The Empress confirmed she would personally oversee the formal sealing ceremony, after which Mei Yushan would move into the Eastern Palace to assist the Crown Prince. She addressed Douzi, who was present in the identity of Mei Yushan, directly. Douzi abruptly turned and walked away from the dinner.

Nangong Yao questioned why she left and immediately followed her. Nangong Yao followed Douzi after she left the dinner hall, wanting an explanation. He told her he had thought about her recent actions for a long time and couldn't understand why she was acting this way – pushing him away at the academy, giving him the cold shoulder with the soup, and walking out of the announcement dinner.

He demanded a reason, insisting he would not let her leave until she told him. Douzi responded fatalistically, asking if he truly thought telling him would save her, suggesting he would simply "cut my head off." Nangong Yao vehemently denied this, proclaiming he would sooner hurt himself than harm her and promising to solve any problem she faced and always be there for her. Douzi insisted, "You can't. No one can. Anyway. . . We just can't be together."

He pressed her, asking if she "couldn't" be with him or "didn't want" to be with him, and questioned what their past relationship had meant – was it just his imagination or had she been pretending because of his identity? He described a recent dream where she was real, like a gentle bunny lying lazily on his shoulder. Tearfully, Douzi pleaded with him to choose "another Crown Princess. . . As long as it's not me. Anyone is fine."

Episode 20 Recap

Douzi pleaded with Nangong Yao to find another Crown Princess, saying anyone but her would be acceptable. Nangong Yao explained that the position was not easily changed once publicly announced, and backing out now would be considered disobeying an imperial decree. Douzi declared that even if it meant decapitation, she could not be with him. As the rain grew heavier, Nangong Yao was visibly affected by her resolve and his existing illness, nearly collapsing.

Despite her refusal to explain why, Nangong Yao stated that they would be estranged from that day forward, never to see each other again. Douzi accepted this as the best outcome. Outside the palace, officials under Liu Jiao discussed the Empress appointing a Crown Princess to counteract bad luck, speculating the Emperor was critically ill and the Crown Prince's ascension was imminent. Concerned their past actions might be revealed, they resolved to distance themselves from their superior.

Douzi attempted to secretly leave the palace but was stopped by guards. The Grand Chancellor Mei was granted special permission by the Empress to visit his daughter in the Guixiu Pavilion. He expressed his pride, believing Mei Yushan had brought great honor to the Mei family by being chosen as Crown Princess. He mentioned discussing the wedding plans with the Empress and being allowed to visit "her room."

Seeing Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body), he commented on her lack of manners, threatening to replace her if she didn't serve his daughter well. Douzi (in Mei Yushan's body) asked if he could help her reject the marriage, explaining that becoming Crown Princess would make it impossible for her to leave the palace and see him. Her father sternly forbade her from speaking like that again, emphasizing that others begged for such an opportunity.

He mentioned her two older brothers, hinting that her position would help them advance in court. Mei Yushan (in Douzi's body) then told her father he could leave, realizing he still saw her only as a tool for the family's advancement. The Grand Chancellor was furious at their disrespect and ordered Douzi (the "maid") to be replaced, insisting it was inappropriate for a man to linger in a girl's room.

After he left, Mei Yushan comforted Douzi, saying she was used to being treated this way by parents who never truly cared for her, only seeing her as a means to benefit her brothers. She regretted repeatedly rejecting someone who genuinely cared for her for the sake of such parents and household. Mei Yushan assured Douzi she was not alone. Shortly after, Eunuch Song arrived with guards, bringing a chest of treasures for Douzi.

He apologized for his earlier rudeness when she first arrived at the pavilion. Mei Yushan observed that as she became the Crown Princess, more people would come to flatter her. Eunuch Song confirmed that the Household Department had prepared everything for the wedding and that leaving the palace would become increasingly difficult. Xing Shi met with Douzi to discuss the escape plan.

He mentioned that the urgent wedding ceremony, originally scheduled for three months later, had been moved up to half a month to counteract bad luck. He noted the palace would be heavily guarded, making escape harder. He assured Douzi he would safely escort them out of the palace and they would decide what to do next. Douzi asked if he would go with them.

Xing Shi said he had a plan: if Mei Yushan was unwilling to leave secretly, he would personally go to the Grand Chancellor's residence and inform her parents about the body swap so she could leave openly. Mei Yushan (in Douzi's body) confirmed she would go with them, stating she had no attachment to her current life or the Mei household, as her parents had treated her as a tool. Xing Shi, visibly moved, took Mei Yushan's hand.

Douzi realized the two harbored mutual affection and, looking at Nangong Yao's portrait hanging in the room, felt it was fate's cruel twist. Bai Ye sought out Nangong Yao at the Astronomical Bureau to again urge him not to marry "her." Nangong Yao questioned his interference, listing his mother, court ministers, and now Bai Ye as opponents to his marriage. He asked why Bai Ye was trying to stop the wedding.

Bai Ye stated he could not disclose the reason but insisted he was acting for the Crown Prince's good. Nangong Yao pressed him, asking if he liked Douzi. Bai Ye admitted his feelings but maintained that his personal feelings were not the reason for his opposition. Nangong Yao demanded to know why Douzi also refused to marry him, believing there was a hidden secret.

Convinced there was more to the story given Douzi and Bai Ye's combined opposition, Nangong Yao went to the prison to interrogate Ling Xiao. He reminded Ling Xiao of his promising career and his parents' pride, noting his current predicament was a shame. He offered to help Ling Xiao's parents and reinstate him if he revealed the truth.

Ling Xiao initially refused to break his promise to Bai Ye, but when Nangong Yao threatened to implicate Bai Ye, Ling Xiao relented. He confessed that the maid Bai Ye had attempted to assassinate at the execution ground was in fact the Shengdong Princess, and Bai Ye had concealed this truth to protect Nangong Yao.

Nangong Yao, hearing this, connected the information – if Mei Yushan was merely the Grand Chancellor's daughter, and the target Bai Ye tried to kill was the Shengdong Princess, then Douzi, the "maid," must be the true Shengdong Princess. Realizing that the prophecy from his childhood was coming true, Nangong Yao was shaken. He recalled his Grand Tutor's words that love was uncontrollable.

He reflected on Douzi's earlier cold words, now understanding that her harshness likely stemmed from just learning her own identity, perhaps a painful realization for her. He wondered if she had a change of heart or had just discovered who she was. He contemplated her situation now that her identity was exposed and his own predicament.

Back at the Chongwen Academy classroom, guards arrived and took Douzi away, stating it was by order of the Crown Prince to bring Miss Mei to the Eastern Palace. Students were surprised by this public display, noting the guards didn't seem to be inviting her politely. Xing Shi, hearing Douzi had been taken to the Eastern Palace, suspected Nangong Yao had learned something and decided to prioritize getting Mei Yushan out of the palace immediately.

Bai Ye, upon hearing that Nangong Yao had interrogated Ling Xiao, also guessed the truth was known and rushed to the Eastern Palace. At the Eastern Palace, Bai Ye asked to see Nangong Yao. Nangong Yao allowed him in, immediately asking if he was there to plead for her. He confirmed he knew the truth and asked how long Bai Ye intended to keep it secret if he hadn't investigated.

Bai Ye confirmed Douzi's identity as the Shengdong Princess, explaining she only recently learned it and came to the palace to retrieve the pearl to swap bodies, not to harm him. He mentioned only Mei Yushan and possibly Xing Shi knew about the swap before. Nangong Yao confirmed Xing Shi knew, noting his protective actions towards Mei Yushan made sense now. Bai Ye expressed concern that the Empress and ministers would not see it the same way.

He pleaded with Nangong Yao to spare Douzi for the sake of the Grand Chancellor Mei, suggesting he appoint another Crown Princess or allow Bai Ye to take Douzi away from the palace forever to circumvent the prophecy. Nangong Yao adamantly refused to change the Crown Princess or let anyone take Douzi from his side, declaring that the kingdom was not important to him compared to her.

He explained he had confined her to the Eastern Palace to protect her, as if her identity became widely known, the entire kingdom would want her dead. Bai Ye realized Nangong Yao's deep feelings for Douzi. Still, Bai Ye argued she couldn't stay in the Eastern Palace due to the risk, urging Nangong Yao to consider the country. Nangong Yao dismissed his concerns, saying he would face problems as they came and felt tired of the discussion.

Nangong Yao ordered his attendant to see Bai Ye out. As Bai Ye left, he asked to see Douzi one last time. Meanwhile, Douzi, locked in the guest room, woke up after sleeping through the night. She called Nangong Yao a coward for not facing her and threatened to break things, only to hesitate when she saw an antique. Deciding she couldn't back down after her threat, she resolved to make some noise regardless.

In another part of the Eastern Palace, Nangong Yao was informed that Douzi had not eaten despite cursing for a full day and night. Nangong Yao, despite having a strain around his shoulder (implying he had been keeping watch over her), ordered braised meatballs to be added to the menu for her, a dish his attendant noted he didn't usually eat as it was too greasy.

Separately, Xing Shi received confirmation that Mei Yushan had been safely escorted out of the palace. His focus now shifted entirely to rescuing Douzi. He declared he would secretly gather all the former subordinates of Shengdong and, if necessary, fight against the entire Jixi kingdom to save the Princess. His loyal followers pledged their lives to rescue the Princess.

Episode 21 Recap

Bai Ye visited Douzi, who was confined in the Eastern Palace. Douzi had been upset for two days and two nights. Bai Ye explained that the Crown Prince knew her true identity as the Shengdong Princess, which was why he had her confined.

Bai Ye urged her to leave the palace with him immediately, warning that her life was in danger if she remained and that her presence could endanger the Crown Prince and even lead to the destruction of Jixi, according to the prophecy. Douzi found the idea that she, a seemingly weak woman, could destroy a country ridiculous. She expressed unwavering trust in Nangong Yao, stating she would never harm him, even if it cost her own life.

Bai Ye, frustrated and hurt by her dismissal of his concern and feelings for her, reminded her that he had predicted this outcome when the Crown Prince was young, long before he even met her. He promised to protect her for the rest of his life if she would just leave with him. Douzi refused to leave, insisting that Bai Ye ask Nangong Yao to see her instead.

Seeing her resolve and feeling like an outsider in her relationship with Nangong Yao, Bai Ye became resentful, feeling justified in breaking them apart. Bai Ye dramatically interrupted the court session, announcing that he had found the Shengdong Princess from the prophecy and that the prophecy was about to be fulfilled. He revealed the princess was Mei Yushan, which caused an uproar, especially from Grand Chancellor Mei, Mei Yushan's father.

Bai Ye clarified that it was not the Grand Chancellor's daughter but the Shengdong Princess who had swapped bodies with Mei Yushan using the Moon Spirit Pearl, explaining that the person currently in Mei Yushan's body was the princess, while the Grand Chancellor's true daughter was now the maid. Nangong Yao, seeing Bai Ye's determination to prevent his marriage, publicly accused Bai Ye of being driven by jealousy.

Bai Ye retorted that his past predictions had always come true, and this one would be no exception, even claiming he had seen the Crown Prince die by the princess's hand. At Chongwen Academy, news of the body swap and the accusation against Mei Yushan (Douzi) spread rapidly. While some students, like Su Ruomei and Zhuang Yangyang, didn't always get along with Douzi, they found the idea of her trying to kill the Crown Prince unbelievable.

Huang Yuanyuan and even the Eighth Prince, Pin, agreed, pointing out Douzi's lack of martial skills and intelligence. They decided to put aside their usual bickering and work together to prove Douzi's innocence, visiting her in prison later. Meanwhile, Liu Jiao incited several officials to gather outside the Eastern Palace, shouting demands for the execution of the "evil girl."

Inside, Douzi heard the commotion and became increasingly angry, feeling the officials who had caused her parents' deaths were now unjustly blaming her. Overwhelmed by frustration, she began smashing objects in the room to vent her feelings. While destroying items, Douzi accidentally cut her arm, crying out in pain. Zuo, hearing the cry, rushed in and then reported the injury to Nangong Yao. Nangong Yao hurried to Douzi's room and personally tended to her wound.

Douzi, still upset by her confinement, urged him to just kill her rather than keep her locked up. Nangong Yao chided her for her outburst, trying to explain his actions were for her safety and that he was hurt by her words during the Mid-Autumn Festival when she also prioritized the "bigger picture."

He reflected on his deep feelings for her since they met at Chongwen Academy and explained that knowing she was the person from the prophecy left him with no other choice but to confine her for her own protection and the stability of Jixi. Douzi questioned if he truly believed she would harm him and the country. As the ministers continued their protest outside, Commander Pei arrived at the Eastern Palace gate with a warrant to arrest Douzi.

Nangong Yao and Dongxi blocked the entrance, declaring that anyone who attempted to force their way in would be opposing the Crown Prince himself. A tense standoff ensued until the Empress arrived with her own retinue. Nangong Yao, unable to defy his mother, reluctantly allowed Douzi to be taken. The Empress interrogated Douzi in Huacai Hall, demanding to know if she had approached the Crown Prince with evil intentions to fulfill the prophecy.

Douzi defiantly denied the accusations, mocking the Empress's inability to discern good from evil. Angered by her insolence, the Empress ordered her slapped, but Douzi still refused to confess. Nangong Yao arrived as an official publicly suggested dethroning the Crown Prince and installing the Eighth Prince to protect the country. Nangong Yao dismissed the official's words, arguing that the Eighth Prince, despite his virtue, was too kind to handle the widespread corruption.

He asserted his own capability to rule decisively and declared he would prioritize the country's interests. To everyone's astonishment, Nangong Yao then walked to a guard, took a sword, cut off a lock of Douzi's hair and then a lock of his own hair, intertwining them. Nanbei then loudly announced that the marriage ceremony between the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess was complete, leaving the assembly in shock. Following the chaotic events, Douzi was imprisoned.

Su Ruomei, Zhuang Yangyang, Huang Yuanyuan, and the Eighth Prince Pin visited her, offering her support and some much-needed comic relief. Douzi was touched by their visit. After they left, Nangong Yao appeared. He apologized for making her suffer and reaffirmed his feelings for her.

He confessed that he had Dongxi investigate her background and her three fathers, confirming that she was unaware of her true identity, which solidified his belief in her innocence, a belief he claimed he never truly doubted. He explained that the situation in the palace was chaotic, and he intended to secretly arrange for her to leave the palace temporarily to avoid the danger.

He promised to weaken the palace defenses to facilitate her escape the following night and bring her back once he had resolved the situation. He then left, telling her to look at the moon whenever she missed him, as they would be looking at the same moon no matter where they were.

Episode 22 Recap

Xing Shi sought out Su Shenhai, knowing he had contacts within the Department of Guards. He offered a large sum of gold in exchange for Su Shenhai removing all soldiers from the city gate by Chou hour that night. Su Shenhai was reluctant, stating he had already done enough by arranging a maid by the side of the person Xing Shi was looking for previously.

Xing Shi pressed him, reminding Su Shenhai how Nangong Yu died by Xuan Bing's hand because Su Shenhai, in his fear, did not come to his rescue in time. Xing Shi presented an embroidered item made by Madam Su, complete with Su Shenhai's birth date, which he claimed Su Shenhai left behind when he hid in a tree during the battle where Nangong Yu died.

Xing Shi framed his request as a "deal," not a threat, and reiterated the offer of two thousand taels of gold. Faced with this undeniable evidence, Su Shenhai reluctantly agreed. Meanwhile, someone (implied to be under the Queen's command) received a report from Fei Kuai that the Crown Prince had secretly visited "the evil girl" (Douzi), replaced the prison guards with people from the Eastern Palace, and reduced the palace's defense.

Fei Kuai was ordered to ensure the Crown Prince did not leave the Eastern Palace and that the evil girl was to be killed if she dared to leave the prison. The person giving the order stated she would kill the girl herself if the Crown Prince wouldn't. Inside the prison, Douzi heard the sounds of fighting and chaos outside.

When told that Xing Shi and the Shengdong army had broken in, she became worried that "Little Master" (Nangong Yao) might be in danger. Ignoring the guards, she demanded to be let out immediately to find him. As the Shengdong army, led by Xing Shi, stormed the palace and fought through the gates, Nangong Yao confronted them in the Hall of Supreme Harmony.

Nangong Yao ordered Xing Shi to drop his weapons and surrender if he came to save the Princess. Xing Shi refused, demanding the Princess be handed over. Douzi arrived and stepped forward, declaring she was the Shengdong Princess they were seeking. She rushed to Nangong Yao's side, ordering the Shengdong soldiers not to harm him. Nangong Yao told her to stand back. Just then, the palace knell sounded, signaling the Emperor's death. Nangong Yao realized his father had died.

Amidst the confusion, Fei Kuai, seeing the Shengdong army, charged at Douzi to kill the "evil girl." Nangong Yao pulled Douzi behind him and took the blow intended for her, collapsing severely injured. Outside the hall, Ling Xiao fiercely defended Bai Ye during the attack but was ultimately killed. Nangong Yao was taken to prison with his injuries. Douzi, devastated, was put under confinement.

Nanbei was able to visit Nangong Yao in prison, bringing him porridge and a secret message from the Queen. The Queen's message explained that while the palace was occupied and officials had been dispersed, there were still significant forces outside waiting for the Crown Prince's command. She urged him to recover and seize the opportunity. However, Nangong Yao was unresponsive, lost in despair, refusing food or drink despite Nanbei mentioning Douzi's concern and efforts to allow Nanbei to visit.

Nanbei pleaded with him to recover for Jixi and for Douzi. Mei Yushan, now recognized by her true identity as the Grand Chancellor's daughter, came to visit Douzi, who was under confinement. Mei Yushan expressed concern that Douzi had not eaten for two days, urging her to take care of herself. Douzi was angry, accusing Mei Yushan of colluding with Xing Shi and abandoning her by leaving the palace early to escape danger.

Mei Yushan insisted she had no knowledge of Xing Shi's plans or the attack, saying he only told her he was getting her out of the palace to save Douzi. Douzi refused to believe her, calling Mei Yushan cowardly and accusing her of being manipulated by Xing Shi. Douzi declared that if anything happened to Nangong Yao, she would consider Xing Shi her enemy, and by extension, Mei Yushan would also become her enemy.

Douzi continued her refusal to eat and drink for several days. Xing Shi came to persuade her, explaining that his subordinates wanted Nangong Yao executed, but he had spared his life by imprisoning him because Nangong Yao had not harmed Douzi. He stressed that Nangong Yao was the enemy of Shengdong due to the national hatred stemming from his grandfather's actions. Douzi passionately argued that the historical conflict was between their previous generations and should not fall upon Nangong Yao.

She even suggested Xing Shi should seek out Nangong Yao's grandfather instead. Xing Shi countered that if Douzi insisted on being with Nangong Yao, it would bring shame to Shengdong and make them a laughingstock, dishonoring their ancestors. He showed her a painting of her mother, Empress Li, hoping it would stir memories of her heritage and the suffering of Shengdong, but Douzi stated she was too young to remember her parents well.

Douzi pressed Xing Shi directly about releasing Nangong Yao. Xing Shi warned her that if she remained defiant, he would ensure she and Nangong Yao were permanently separated. Bai Ye, who had seemingly pledged allegiance to Xing Shi, visited Nangong Yao in prison. He whipped Nangong Yao, verbally criticizing him for his despair and loss of dignity in defeat. However, his true intention was to provoke Nangong Yao into action and rally for Jixi.

Bai Ye apologized to Nangong Yao, admitting he was only pretending to serve Xing Shi to preserve hope for Jixi. He told Nangong Yao that if he died, the rumor of Douzi being an "evil girl" would be confirmed, leading to her condemnation by the Jixi populace. Bai Ye urged Nangong Yao to survive, as he was Jixi's only hope. Nangong Yao remained silent, enduring the punishment.

Mei Yushan went to Xing Shi to confront him about his order to exile Nangong Yao in three days. She argued that exile to the described region was a death sentence, especially given Nangong Yao's injuries. Xing Shi stated that exile was a mercy compared to execution but admitted survival on that journey was unlikely.

Mei Yushan expressed her hurt that Xing Shi had ignored her presence since she entered the palace, only now seeing her when she pleaded for Nangong Yao. She questioned why he continued to persecute Nangong Yao after Douzi was safe. Xing Shi challenged her, asking if she would prefer him to die instead, explaining that freeing Nangong Yao would lead to the imprisonment and execution of himself and his soldiers. He felt misunderstood, believing Mei Yushan didn't care for him.

He explained that his initial plan was only to rescue Douzi, but the situation escalated unexpectedly, leading to the capture of Jixi's princes and the kingdom's fall, and he felt he had to follow destiny. He tried to suggest that despite the tragedy, they could now be together openly, but Mei Yushan indicated she preferred their previous hidden relationship. Xing Shi defended his actions as necessary for his country, stating his decision regarding Nangong Yao was final.

Mei Yushan sent a message to Douzi, informing her of Nangong Yao's impending exile in three days. Determined to save him, Douzi infiltrated the prison with Nanbei. They incapacitated the guards, took their uniforms, and freed Nangong Yao and Dongxi, who was imprisoned with him. As they attempted to escape, Xing Shi and his guards intercepted them, having captured their contacts waiting outside. Douzi stood protectively in front of Nangong Yao, defying Xing Shi.

She hurled insults at him, daring him to kill her instead if he wanted to exile Nangong Yao. She declared she was already the Crown Princess and would "commit adultery" if he harmed Nangong Yao, challenging him to destroy both of them if he persisted. Xing Shi threatened to dismember Nangong Yao if she did not comply and ordered his guards to seize Douzi, but she refused to move.

Episode 23 Recap

A month later, Nangong Yao was escorted into exile at the border. Xingshi ascended the throne, changing the country's name to Shengdong. Douzi was proclaimed Princess Yueying and granted numerous honors. Soldiers in the city recounted the day Xingshi broke into the palace with his troops, describing the fear of the city soldiers and Nangong Yao's immediate surrender, kneeling and kowtowing eighty-one times for his life, calling him shameless for giving up his country without a fight.

Despite her new title, Douzi found her life in the palace restrictive. She was expected to learn strict etiquette, from walking and bowing to eating and drinking, under the tutelage of a governess. Finding it hard to abandon her old habits, Douzi struggled with the rigid rules, openly wishing for more freedom.

The governess grew frustrated, warning that any failure in etiquette would be her responsibility, while Douzi mused that Mei Yushan must have also suffered greatly to achieve such elegance and politeness. During her limited free time, Douzi visited her three adoptive fathers in Black Dog Alley. She brought them many precious gifts, such as emeralds and jade, and delicious food from the palace.

The fathers were overjoyed by the treasures, marveling at items they had never seen before, and were thrilled to eat the palace cuisine. They asked about her life in the palace, and Douzi confessed it felt only slightly better than being imprisoned, lamenting that Xingshi kept her under constant watch and that she couldn't do as she pleased like she could in the alley.

Her First Father defended their simple home, but her Second Father stirred up an uncomfortable moment by remarking that being a Princess was better than being the Crown Princess. First Father quickly silenced him, reminding him of what happened between Douzi and the Crown Prince and telling him not to mention it again, seeing Douzi's discomfort. Douzi excused herself, feeling stuffy. Meanwhile, Mei Yushan had refused the title Xingshi offered her.

This resulted in her attendants being neglectful, leaving her room cold without a warmer despite the winter. Xingshi visited her, noticing the cold and scolding the attendants, ordering a warmer immediately and warning them Mei would one day be their empress and they must not neglect her. He offered to replace the staff if she wasn't satisfied.

Mei Yushan remained distant and unforgiving, refusing to accept his apology or the title, despite Xingshi's insistence that he would wait until she felt comfortable with him, acknowledging his own hastiness in the matter. Douzi often dreamt of Nangong Yao, seeing him approaching her in chains, only to wake up alone. Longing to find him, she asked Mei Yushan to help her escape the palace.

Mei initially seemed hesitant, questioning why Douzi would ask for help from someone she had accused of being Xingshi's accomplice and if she wasn't afraid Mei would betray her. Douzi apologized profusely for her previous hurtful words, explaining she said them because she saw Nangong Yao so badly injured. Seeing Mei folding paper cranes for Nangong Yao's safety, wishing him peace and smoothness, Douzi felt deeply moved and grateful, begging Mei to forgive her and help.

Mei relented, agreeing to help but warning Douzi the matter was serious. Douzi insisted Mei's help was all she needed. Douzi presented a simple escape plan involving hiding on a wall and jumping down after yelling "fire" at the gate to distract guards. Mei found the plan naive, comparing the guards' intelligence to walnuts, and suggested a better helper for getting out of the palace, noting Douzi would still need someone to pick her up.

Douzi immediately thought of her three fathers, confident they would be reliable, despite Mei's mild doubt. Douzi expressed how stifled she felt in the large, silent palace without Mei's company, finding the large bed less comforting than their old small one. Mei agreed, saying the big bed had room for two more people. Douzi then wished Nangong Yao were there. Mei told her to speak quietly due to Xingshi's spies.

They discussed Douzi's plans after finding Nangong Yao, and Douzi, not having thought far ahead, suggested having the wedding night first as she heard it was the most important thing after getting married in the outside world. Mei teased her lack of knowledge and reserve, prompting Douzi to press her for details, mentioning she'd read about it in her brother's private books. Mei refused to tell her, saying she would know when it happened.

Douzi threatened to ask Nangong Yao to teach her, leading Mei to remind her about the "Moral Instruction for Women" and the importance of being reserved. Mei confessed she was also tired of being the cautious Mei Yushan, bound by rules and elders' teachings, always suppressing herself. She promised Douzi she would no longer be wronged and expressed envy for Douzi's freedom to pursue her desires and express herself openly.

Mei declared she would no longer lecture Douzi and would always be there to help her whenever needed. The next day, Mei Yushan summoned her parents to the palace to help. On the way, Mei's father, Grand Chancellor Mei, encountered Liu Jiao Yuan. Liu Jiao Yuan greeted him, but Grand Chancellor Mei responded briefly before quickly departing.

Liu Jiao Yuan's subordinate mocked Grand Chancellor Mei, suggesting his official position was only secure now because his daughter was favored by the new emperor, as former ministers assisting the Crown Prince had been dismissed. Liu Jiao Yuan cautioned his subordinate to be careful in their words and actions under the new reign. Inside the palace, Mei's parents were easily confused between Mei Yushan and Douzi, repeatedly mistaking one for the other.

Mei Yushan proposed taking Douzi out of the palace, but her parents were terrified, believing helping would lead to their own deaths. Mei reminded them of their desire to see their sons promoted. When they hesitated, Mei Yushan dramatically pretended to attempt suicide with scissors, declaring she would die if they wouldn't help her.

Douzi, playing along, added fuel to the fire, highlighting the dire consequences for the family, including the brothers being unable to become officials or find wives if Mei died. Faced with this pressure and Mei's performance, Grand Chancellor Mei and his wife were convinced and reluctantly agreed to help, promising to discuss it.

When Xingshi discovered Douzi's disappearance, he was furious and immediately ordered a palace-wide search, including the residence of Mei Yushan, but her attendant quickly shifted responsibility by saying the Princess hadn't returned after visiting Mei. Meanwhile, Douzi's three adoptive fathers had prepared for her escape, buying a coffin to feign a funeral procession. At the city gate, guards stopped them for a routine check.

Despite their pleas and a bribe, the guards insisted on opening the coffin and even prepared to stab the body to ensure death. Terrified, Douzi jumped out of the coffin, yelling. The three fathers fled with her, running into the Museum. Bai Ye arrived with soldiers to search the Museum. However, he deliberately allowed them to escape, telling them they could come out as the garden had been neglected and was dusty.

Douzi asked if he was there to arrest her, but Bai Ye said he would not. He told her he knew she was looking for Nangong Yao and revealed he was waiting outside the city. Bai Ye gave Douzi a map to help her find him.

When Douzi asked if he was truly willing to let her go, Bai Ye admitted it was not what he "wanted", but he was no longer blinded by his feelings and was genuinely happy for the two people he cared about most to be together. As more soldiers approached, Bai Ye urged Douzi to leave through the back door, assuring her he could handle the situation and explain to the officials by saying they escaped him.

The fathers initially hesitated to leave him, offering to stay and distract the guards, but Bai Ye insisted they go quickly. Outside the city, Nangong Yao was gathering support, preparing to reclaim power. His forces from Jixi were assembling, and he discussed the dire state of the country under Xingshi's rule, where loyal officials were dismissed as his henchmen, and innocent civilians were left homeless and forced into banditry.

He was also focused on dealing with the Heifeng Gang, the last remaining hostile group of bandits, stating that taking them down would be a great relief for him and the local civilians. He agreed to meet the Heifeng Gang's chief to demonstrate his sincerity. Following the map, Douzi found herself lost near Shidian Village, contemplating the names of the roads, including one called "Huangquan Road," which made her question if Bai Ye was trying to get her killed.

Having left in a hurry without money, she considered resorting to stealing again, her old habit. However, she witnessed others fighting over and stealing goods. Later, she found a dropped bag of money and, seeing a diagnosis for a fatal illness written on it, realized it was life-saving funds and decided she must find the owner to return it, despite the chaos around her.

Observing the scene and the people's struggles, she noted the insecurity of the area and the general disorder due to the Emperor's inaction. She decided it was getting dark and unsafe and headed somewhere to spend the night.

Episode 24 (Ending) Recap

Douzi, having left the Museum, is captured by members of the Heifeng Gang who are drinking and eating. They note she doesn't look like a refugee and might be from Shengdong, deciding she could be useful. Douzi, upon waking, pretends to be sick and useless, claiming she is afraid they will dislike her because of her illness. She then fakes a severe coughing fit, begging for medicine.

When they check her bag, they find a paper which one member identifies as a prescription for Asthma. Douzi elaborates on her fabricated condition, claiming she has a miserable life, her parents died after being infected by her, and she is now alone with no money for treatment. She pleads for them to save her. The gang leaders discuss what to do, considering letting her go, which they find wasteful.

One suggests giving her as a gift to Nangong Yao's camp nearby, which they agree is a good idea. The Heifeng Gang members place Douzi in a sack. The Chief arrives, expressing dissatisfaction with being offered only potatoes. Nangong Yao presents him with fine wine and meat, stating that men with great ambitions should not be consumed by trivial pleasures, suggesting the Chief could achieve great things if he were less reckless.

The Chief boasts of his achievements within the Heifeng Gang. Nangong Yao offers daily provisions of wine and meat, along with three thousand soldiers, if the Chief agrees to obey him and abandon their lawless ways. Surprised by the offer of three thousand men, the Chief questions if Nangong Yao is truthful. Nangong Yao assures him he keeps his word. The gang members are excited and agree to follow Nangong Yao.

Nangong Yao then lays down a rule: all stolen goods must be returned, including the "greeting gift" presented in the sack. The Chief agrees and orders the wine and meat to be served. As the gang members prepare to open the sack, Douzi, still inside, complains that she traveled far to find Nangong Yao, only for him to seemingly want to send her back, describing how constantly worried she was about him.

Nangong Yao, hearing her voice or seeing her as the sack is opened, confirms he will not send her back. The gang members, confused about whether to return her, are told by Nangong Yao to "Keep her." Nangong Yao asks about the contents of the sack. The gang members reveal hunting weapons, knockout drops, and a drawing. Seeing these, Nangong Yao recognizes them as Douzi's possessions and realizes it is her.

Douzi directly states her intention to stay with Nangong Yao that night, noting the camp's lack of private rooms unlike the Eastern Palace and that her only alternative would be to sleep outside. Nangong Yao initially suggests she take the bed while he sleeps on the floor, but quickly dismisses the idea, saying he wouldn't let his Crown Princess do that. He then simply tells her to go to bed.

Later that night, Douzi, seemingly restless, asks Nangong Yao if he is asleep. He questions whether she is concerned he cannot sleep or that he is already asleep. She urges him to hurry. She asks if he is cold, and he confirms he is. She asks again, and he confirms again, after which she says he shouldn't be cold now, implying physical closeness.

She expresses a deep desire for them to remain in this state forever, declaring her contentment with him by her side, even amidst hardship. Nangong Yao reciprocates, saying his life feels complete with her presence, turning even simple food into a feast. The next day, Douzi describes her journey back, having witnessed many displaced people and their suffering, finding the situation unbearable and unjust. She asserts that the current ruler, Xing Shi, is leading the country towards destruction.

She voices her belief that the name of the country, whether Jixi or Shengdong, is less important than ensuring the people live good lives. Nangong Yao asks if she truly feels this way, and she confirms her belief, stating she will support his desire to return to the palace. Nangong Yao shares his high confidence in his plan, giving it a ninety percent chance of success, but admits to a slight uncertainty.

He asks if she is afraid of the potential suffering she might face if they were to fail. Douzi expresses no fear, asserting her belief in his eventual victory. She adds that should their plan fail, they can simply wander the world together, confident in her ability to support them both. Nangong Yao reassures her that his plan will succeed and promises that neither she nor the common people will suffer under his rule.

Nangong Yao, supported by the Heifeng Gang and other remaining forces, arrives at the palace gates, where wanted posters for him are displayed. Inside, Douzi's companions urge her not to go out, conveying that Nangong Yao wants her to stay safe due to the danger of the fighting. Douzi insists on joining "Little Master," declaring she will follow him anywhere, even in death, and asks who will accompany her. Que volunteers despite her timidity, and others from their group agree.

They fight their way into the palace and enter the Hall of Supreme Harmony, expressing surprise at the ease of their entry. Xing Shi is inside with Bai Ye, whom he has taken hostage. Nangong Yao's forces demand Bai Ye's release. Xing Shi reveals he had suspected Bai Ye and used him to learn of Nangong Yao's plans and set a trap.

Bai Ye tells Nangong Yao not to save him, acknowledging his past betrayal caused Nangong Yao's exile and doesn't make him worthy of rescue. Nangong Yao counters that he would make the same choice if their positions were reversed. Mei Yushan is present and initially stands with Nangong Yao's side, instructing others to move aside as she is a princess. Guards order her to stand down. Douzi arrives with her group, including her second and third godfathers.

She tries to halt the fighting, but it continues. When a guard attempts to attack Douzi, her godfathers fiercely protect her, stating they would have killed him if she hadn't intervened. Douzi loudly orders everyone to stop fighting, using her hammer to restore order and assigning her second and third godfathers to maintain peace in the area. As fighting resumes elsewhere, Douzi worries about Nangong Yao and offers to help him fight, urging him to be careful.

Nangong Yao confronts Xing Shi. A dart is thrown towards Xing Shi, and Mei Yushan rushes to shield him, getting hit herself. Douzi calls out to Mei Yushan and scolds Xing Shi. She immediately calls for a physician for Mei Yushan, pleading with her not to die. After Mei Yushan is injured, Douzi frantically calls for medical help, specifically the Grand Tutor.

Informed Mei Yushan is near death, Douzi reveals she has had the Moon Spirit Pearl repaired and intends to attempt a body swap that night during the full moon, vowing not to let Mei Yushan die and offering to trade her own life. Someone warns against such an attempt. Douzi finds the Grand Tutor and brings him to Mei Yushan. Seeing her condition, he decides to use a poisonous worm to draw out the harmful elements from her body.

Douzi is horrified by the method but the Grand Tutor proceeds, noting the dart missed her heart by a small margin. After the worm treatment, Mei Yushan's hand moves, indicating the treatment was successful and she has recovered. Later, Xing Shi is seen in captivity, expressing contentment knowing Mei Yushan is safe, stating that being a prisoner is far less taxing than ruling as Emperor. He reflects that had he understood this earlier, his fate might have been different.

He remarks that the burden of being Emperor now falls upon someone else. Nangong Yao ascends the throne as Emperor, restoring the country's name to Jixi, while Xing Shi is exiled to Shengdong, forbidden from ever returning to Jixi. Mei Yushan bids an emotional farewell to her parents.

Her parents express disappointment that she is choosing exile with Xing Shi over a life of prosperity, telling her to go and act as if she is no longer their daughter, although her mother tearfully mentions hoping she might at least bring them simple food when they are old. Mei Yushan assures them Douzi will look after them.

As Mei Yushan prepares to leave, Douzi provides her with a carriage full of supplies, including gold, jewels, pens, ink, and a horse named Douzi, expressing concern that Mei Yushan is not accustomed to hardship. She instructs Mei Yushan to use the supplies, sell the valuables if needed, and write letters, simple ones she can understand, or draw pictures.

She also mentions hiring a servant for eighty years to ensure Mei Yushan has carved bitter gourd, a delicacy she is fond of. She tells Mei Yushan to talk to the horse if she feels lonely, cautioning her not to feed it stinky tofu due to its delicate stomach. Mei Yushan leaves, and Douzi expresses a wish for her to be happy, saying she hopes they will meet again. Bai Ye is seen traveling and reflecting.

He describes living a simple life away from the capital's chaos, appreciating the peace and the bright stars, though he misses his two best friends and wonders how they are doing after more than a year since he left the palace, wishing them well. Back in the palace, Nangong Yao is now the Emperor. In a scene possibly within Chongwen Academy, Nangong Yao and his Empress, Douzi, are present in a classroom.

Douzi is seen interacting with students, trying to lighten the formal atmosphere of rote learning. Later, they and others are shown looking out a window at something beautiful. The story concludes with the wish for the country and its people to be safe, prosperous, healthy, and secure. A final glimpse shows the Emperor and Empress together.
