Gao Ren, his spirits restored, returned to the hospital. The director informed him that the hospital had thoroughly investigated the recent accident. Given that he was not entirely responsible and had actively cooperated in resolving the issues, including making compensation, he was permitted to resume work, albeit starting from the basic level. Meanwhile, Yin Fei sought out Dingding, hoping she would help resolve the lingering misunderstanding between Ning Suqing and Ning Weijin regarding his father's past.

Yin Fei revealed that Ning Suqing and Ding Rou had already been divorced for over a year when Ding Rou was diagnosed with cancer. Fearing that their young children, Ning Weijin and Ning Weixuan, would be devastated by the dual blow of divorce and cancer, they decided to keep the divorce a secret. Ning Suqing then stayed to care for Ding Rou.

Yin Fei presented Dingding with a letter from Ding Rou, penned by a nurse due to Ding Rou's trembling hands from her advanced illness. In the letter, Ding Rou expressed deep regret over the divorce but thanked Ning Suqing for his selfless care during her final year, acknowledging the immense burden he bore. She found solace and warmth in his presence, recalling their cherished memories and feeling less cold when facing death.

Ding Rou apologized to her children for leaving them, explaining that the pain had become unbearable, forcing her to abandon treatment. She urged them not to blame her or their father, affirming her love for them, and wished for Ning Suqing to find happiness with Yin Fei after her passing. She asked that the letter be revealed to the children when they were mature enough to understand. Ning Weijin shared the letter with Ning Weixuan.

Ning Weixuan initially rejected the truth, refusing to believe her mother had abandoned them. She recalled their mother’s constant smiles during hospital visits, leading them to believe she would return home, never imagining it was a final goodbye. Ning Weijin, while also struggling with the revelation, expressed understanding for his mother's choice in the face of immense pain.

He theorized that their father, fearing their hatred for their mother’s decision to give up, chose to bear their resentment by concealing the truth. Ning Weixuan, however, remained skeptical, questioning why her father hadn't revealed the letter earlier and even wondering if he had been involved with Yin Fei before the divorce, implying it might have caused her mother's illness. Ning Weijin dismissed these as speculations and proposed they confront their father for the full story.

Although still unable to fully forgive him, Ning Weixuan agreed to let Ning Weijin speak with their father after he returned from an upcoming free clinic. Ning Weixuan then mentioned having chest pain, attributing it to stress from her busy coffee shop. Ning Weijin, concerned, insisted she get a check-up, emphasizing that no physical symptom should be ignored. Ning Weixuan confided in Dingding, who described her past mammary fibroma symptoms—a painful lump, swelling, fatigue—and regretted not seeking treatment earlier.

Recognizing similarities, Ning Weixuan grew worried. As Dingding was due for her own re-examination, they decided to go together, using genetic technology test coupons a customer had given Ning Weixuan. At the medical center, Ning Weixuan felt overwhelmed by the sterile atmosphere and attempted to leave, but Dingding persuaded her to stay. While Dingding was undergoing her examination, Ning Weixuan spotted Dr. Xiang, who was there to visit a friend.

To avoid him discovering she was there for a check-up, Ning Weixuan quickly distracted him and led him away to chat, claiming she was merely accompanying Dingding. During her examination, the doctor noted Dingding's history of mammary fibroma and warned that her genes carried potential pathogens for breast disease, making recurrence highly probable. The doctor stressed that a delay in detection could have led to breast cancer and recommended a specialized breast examination.

Alarmed, and questioning the center’s legitimacy, Dingding took her report to the hospital to consult with intern Ding Yang. However, due to his limited experience, Ding Yang could not definitively confirm recurrence or other issues. Seeking further clarity, Dingding consulted online experts, who also could not provide a certain diagnosis but did not rule out the possibility of malignancy. These inconclusive findings left Dingding deeply anxious.

In a video call, Ning Weijin noticed Dingding’s troubled expression and asked if something was wrong. Not wanting to worry him while he was away, Dingding downplayed her fears about the medical report, simply saying she was tired. Upon Ning Weijin’s return from the free clinic, Dingding, citing other commitments, did not pick him up. Ning Weixuan drove him home and, unable to keep it to herself, revealed Dingding’s worrying medical report.

Ning Weijin, surprised, felt that Dingding's fibroma had a low recurrence rate. He expressed greater concern for Ning Weixuan, reminding her of their family history and the 10-30% hereditary risk of breast cancer. He urged her to get a full check-up immediately, but she resisted, citing obligations at her coffee shop. Later, Ning Weijin called Dingding.

Having already reviewed Dingding's preliminary report, Ning Weijin reassured her it was likely benign hyperplasia but insisted she undergo a more detailed examination the next day, promising his unwavering support regardless of the outcome. Despite her fears, Dingding, trusting his words, agreed. Ning Weijin then gathered everyone from the coffee shop (Gao Ren, Yunsheng, and Xiao Lei) to brainstorm ideas for a romantic proposal, hoping to uplift Dingding's spirits after her recent health worries.

He had already purchased a ring, engraved with the Latin phrase "be faithful to the end," which Ning Weixuan admired. Ning Weijin planned to propose the following day after Dingding's hospital check-up. However, chaos ensued when their cat, Ning Weinan, swallowed the engagement ring. They rushed the cat to the pet hospital.

At the pet hospital, Ning Weixuan, fearing Ning Weinan might require surgery to retrieve the ring and possibly die, called Dingding to alert her, hoping she would see the cat one last time. Ning Weijin, realizing his carefully planned surprise was compromised, asked Ning Weixuan to send Dingding away. Gao Ren, however, suggested an impromptu proposal at the pet hospital, believing the unexpected "scare" followed by a "surprise" would be memorable.

They hastily rushed home to retrieve the pre-made proposal signs. The veterinarian simply administered a laxative to Ning Weinan, and the ring was soon passed. Ning Weijin cleaned the ring, and with everyone's help, they quickly set up the proposal by the fountain outside the pet hospital. Ning Weixuan called Dingding again, fabricating a story about Ning Weinan needing its favorite toy from the cafe for a final play, which sped Dingding to their location.

Dingding arrived at the pet hospital to find Gao Ren, Yunsheng, Xiao Lei, and Ning Weixuan holding large cardboard signs adorned with romantic declarations and a proposal. Ning Weijin then knelt, presenting the ring. Dingding was deeply moved, her eyes welling with tears. However, the doctor's recent warning about her potential breast cancer risk flashed through her mind. Overwhelmed, she heartbreakingly refused Ning Weijin's proposal and ran away. Everyone was left stunned, unable to comprehend her refusal.

Following the failed proposal, Gao Ren blamed his inadequate planning, but Ning Weijin believed their relationship might not have reached that stage, or perhaps Dingding didn't fully trust him, citing her past reluctance to confide in him. Gao Ren then offered a series of insights on love, which Ning Weijin misinterpreted as a reflection on Shu Yiran, linking it to Gao Ren's past surgical error.

Gao Ren clarified that his mistake had nothing to do with Shu Yiran but was instead due to Ning Weixuan. He admitted that while he had always outwardly rejected Ning Weixuan, he had unknowingly fallen in love with her. During the period when she wasn't around, her absence caused him significant unease and distracted him during surgery, leading to the accident. He now fully understood that his constant thoughts of her were a clear sign of his deep affection.

Meanwhile, Ning Weixuan's calls to Dingding went unanswered. Dingding later confided in Xiaofeng, explaining her refusal stemmed from fear of her potential breast cancer and not wanting to burden Ning Weijin, especially given his mother's history of dying from breast cancer, which had been a lasting pain for him. Xiaofeng, however, reprimanded her for making assumptions without a confirmed diagnosis and urged her to get a re-examination.

Hearing Ning Weixuan mention Dingding's recent hospital visit for a check-up, Ning Weijin recalled Dingding's earlier medical concerns and realized she must be deeply worried about her health, regretting that the proposal preparations had overshadowed her well-being.
