Gu Jingyuan hurried after Qiao Yan, who was upset and jealous. When he caught up with her at home, he found the bedroom elaborately decorated, understanding that Qiao Yan wanted to make up for their missed wedding night. He tried to explain the situation with Lu Wanqing, but Qiao Yan sarcastically remarked that his wine was not as good as "Wan's wine" and that he was "your dear Wan's Yuan," pretending to be sleepy and dismissive.
Gu Jingyuan realized her jealousy, and Qiao Yan then admitted she was "especially good at being jealous" and "extremely fierce" when she was. Gu Jingyuan then embraced and kissed her, and Qiao Yan, knowing nothing would happen between him and Lu Wanqing, allowed him to coax her. She then suggested it was time to make up for their wedding night, and they reconciled, successfully making up for their previous disappointment. Meanwhile, Qin Ziyu was in a state of distress.
He heard a recorded message from Qin Mian, telling him that he saw what Ziyu was hiding and would take all the blame, assuring him he was always his beloved son. Looking at a photo of Qiao Yan, Qin Ziyu lamented, "Why didn't you wait for me? Just like your mother didn't wait for my dad back then. All because of Gu Jingyuan!"
He confided in a picture of Qin Mian, stating he finally understood his father's desperate desire for Qiao Yuling. Qin Ziyu then called one of his men, ordering him to kill Gu Hai, with an initial reminder not to hurt Yuling. His trusted subordinate, Ah Feng, later confirmed that Gu Jingyuan was also seen with Gu Hai, which piqued Qin Ziyu's interest.
Excited, Qin Ziyu declared he couldn't wait to start his game, vowing to reclaim Qiao Yan and make Gu Jingyuan suffer the pain of loss. While out shopping with Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan spotted his stepfather moving items into a car in the garage. He had Lin Ze investigate the car's license plate. After dropping Qiao Yan home, Gu Jingyuan received the car's location from Lin Ze and followed it to the sanatorium.
There, he found his mother, Luo Qian, who was singing a lullaby and looking at an old photograph. Luo Qian, with a somewhat disjointed memory, recognized him as her son, embracing him. Gu Jingyuan, emotional, questioned where she had been all these years, as he had been led to believe she was dead. He then asked who the man in the photograph was, and Luo Qian revealed that he was his father.
Overwhelmed, Gu Jingyuan cried out in disbelief, denying it. Soon after, his stepfather appeared, confirming Gu Jingyuan's suspicion that he had been deliberately led there. His stepfather disclosed that Qin Ziyu was behind it. Qin Ziyu then appeared, greeting Gu Jingyuan as "Brother." Gu Jingyuan accused Qin Ziyu of fabricating a lie for revenge because he had sent Qin Mian to prison.
Qin Ziyu scoffed, explaining that Luo Qian had been in the sanatorium for twenty years, making it impossible to coerce her into lying. He insisted that Gu Jingyuan was Qin Mian's illegitimate son and was simply unwilling to admit it. Gu Jingyuan demanded proof. His stepfather then revealed the full story: Luo Qian met Qin Mian at a ball, secretly became pregnant, but Qin Mian, who was already engaged to Miss Song, abandoned her.
To give the child a home and to gain some benefits, he married Luo Qian, only for Qin Mian to refuse payment, break his leg, and forbid him from ever speaking of it, denying the "bastard" son. Qin Ziyu then taunted Gu Jingyuan, acknowledging their shared status as "bastards" and "good brothers," but questioned if Gu Jingyuan felt any guilt for imprisoning his own biological father. Gu Jingyuan maintained that Qin Mian brought his fate upon himself.
Qin Ziyu further provoked Gu Jingyuan, asking if he hated him for being Qin Mian's only acknowledged son and if he felt like killing him. Gu Jingyuan, however, stated he had no interest in their father-son matters. Qin Ziyu then threatened to expose Gu Jingyuan's true identity to the Gu family, warning that Gu Changfeng and Qiao Yan might believe he conspired with Qin Mian to kill Gu Hai and married Qiao Yan for ulterior motives.
Gu Jingyuan demanded to know what Qin Ziyu wanted. Qin Ziyu's condition for keeping the secret was simple: Gu Jingyuan had to divorce Qiao Yan, because, Qin Ziyu declared, Qiao Yan belonged to him. Gu Jingyuan was left in a profound state of uncertainty, grappling with the revelation of his parentage. The secret threatened to shatter his relationship with Qiao Yan, as he was now the son of the man who murdered her parents.
He feared losing Qiao Yan forever, haunted by Qin Ziyu's threats and Qiao Yan's past anguish over the truth about Qin Mian. That evening, Gu Jingyuan returned home, his mind heavy with these revelations, to find Qiao Yan asleep on the sofa. She woke up, greeted him, and offered him the steamed buns she had bought, but he declined, citing more work.
He told her not to wait up for him, despite her affectionate plea that he needed to balance work and rest, and that she needed him. After Qiao Yan went to bed, Gu Jingyuan remained awake throughout the night, wrestling with the impossible choice of whether to reveal the devastating truth to her, remembering vividly the pain she endured when she first learned Qin Mian was the killer.
He silently wondered how he could ever tell Qiao Yan and Gu Changfeng about his true identity. Earlier, Gu Jingyuan had given Lu Wanqing a custom-made necklace, which he now knew was left by his biological father. He tasked Lin Ze with investigating the necklace, and Lin Ze confirmed that its unique button belonged to Qin Mian, solidifying the connection. Sensing Gu Jingyuan was troubled, Lu Wanqing visited him.
Though he tried to dismiss her concerns, she pressed on, revealing that Qin Ziyu had approached her again about separating him and Qiao Yan. Gu Jingyuan urged her to stay out of it, but Lu Wanqing adamantly refused, insisting she wouldn't let anyone harm him and would handle the situation.
