Director He explained her philosophy that while art might seem abstract to most, the feeling of liking it is tangible, and her purpose is to assign value to this liking and enhance the commercial worth of artworks. She emphasized that "liking" is expensive, a concept a child cannot grasp. Director He then revealed that Xun Ran is younger than Zhou Shi and expressed surprise that Ning Fei, whom Zhou Shi knew, hadn't told her.
This led Zhou Shi to the stunning realization that Ning Fei was Xun Ran all along. Impressed by Ning Fei's recommendation, which she deemed more authoritative than any test, Director He immediately hired Zhou Shi, who accepted the position and promised to start the next day. Later, Zhou Shi expressed distress to her roommates, realizing that Li Ming Cheng's birthday on November 6th was less than a week away and she hadn't prepared a gift.
She explained their long-standing tradition: she gives him a gift she thinks he'd like, and if she guesses correctly, he gives her a gift she'd like on her birthday. However, she hadn't guessed right in years, recalling the previous year's "CET-4 vocabulary" book and fearing this year he might give her a pass for a cram school.
Lin Feifei suggested asking Li Ming Cheng's friends, but Zhou Shi lamented her lack of connection with his academic circle, noting how they ignored her, especially when senior Zhang Ran Yu was around. Observing Li Ming Cheng's recent late nights, they speculated he had a new online chess friend, possibly a girl, leading Bi Qiu Jing to volunteer to join his club to gather intelligence. Bi Qiu Jing arrived at the astronomy club, surprising everyone, especially Zhang Ran Yu.
Despite Zhang Ran Yu's hostile reception, calling her a "barred spiral galaxy," Bi Qiu Jing’s perfect score on the admission test secured her entry. When Zhang Ran Yu continued to question her qualifications, Bi Qiu Jing retorted with a string of chemical terms which Li Ming Cheng recognized as a coded insult. He pulled Bi Qiu Jing aside, urging her to get along with other club members.
However, Bi Qiu Jing declared she was only there for him and bluntly asked if he had a girlfriend. Observing no change in his pupils or heartbeat, she concluded he had no romantic interests. She then directly asked what he wanted for his upcoming birthday. Li Ming Cheng listed a full set of expensive deep space photography equipment.
Bi Qiu Jing deemed these too impractical, and after spotting his calligraphy on the wall, she declared that a set of calligraphy would be his "ideal" birthday gift, instructing him to tell Zhou Shi exactly that. She then promised to somehow acquire the expensive items he truly desired on her own terms.
Zhou Shi began her first day at the gallery, where Director He simply instructed her to stand by the entrance and smile, explaining that the gallery had few customers. Soon after, Wei Qing arrived, much to Director He's annoyance. She sent Zhou Shi to dismiss him, claiming to be ill. Zhou Shi was shocked to realize the unwelcome visitor was Wei Qing, who, amused, claimed to be there on official business as the chairman.
Zhou Shi was then surprised to learn that the gallery was part of Yun Ma Artwork, meaning she was now working under Wei Qing. He remarked on their frequent "fated" encounters, noting how she always ended up near him despite trying to avoid him. Inside the gallery office, Wei An confided in Zhou Shi that Wei Qing and Director He were biological mother and son, but their relationship was complicated.
Wei Qing presented Director He with a report detailing the gallery's financial deficit, warning her that she would be held accountable at the upcoming shareholder meeting, which could lead to budget cuts and her dismissal. He proposed recruiting established artists to boost revenue, but Director He vehemently opposed it, arguing that Yun Ma Artwork was founded to nurture new talent, not prioritize profit.
Wei Qing countered that her method had only produced one successful artist, Ning Fei, and accused her of improperly accounting for the gallery's high operating costs, which burdened other Yun Ma branches. He declared his intention to commercially package Ning Fei to maximize his value. Furious, Director He insisted that Ning Fei was a true artist who should focus solely on creation.
Wei Qing angrily retorted that Ning Fei's artist father had starved to death and Ning Fei himself had been rescued from an orphanage, arguing that his own "money-oriented" approach had built Yun Ma into an empire that allowed her the luxury to "play with art." Enraged, Director He slapped Wei Qing and ordered him out. Wei Qing vowed to see her at the board meeting, hinting the gallery itself might cease to exist.
Visibly hurt, he reminded her that her husband was also his father, and he didn't want to see the gallery destroyed either. After he left, Director He warned Zhou Shi not to pity him, dismissing his emotions as "crocodile tears." Wei Qing instructed Wei An to cancel the afternoon board meeting. Wei An also informed him that Xue Zi had returned and purchased one of Ning Fei's paintings at a high price.
Wei Qing then sent Wei An away, wishing to be alone. He reflected on his childhood, recalling how his father frequently criticized his drawings as inferior to Ning Fei's. A frustrated young Wei Qing once questioned why his father bothered having him if he preferred the adopted Ning Fei, earning a slap. A past confrontation where Wei Qing defied his father tragically led to his father's sudden illness and death.
After his father's passing, the will stipulated that Wei Qing would assume full control of Yun Ma Artwork, a decision his mother never forgave him for. Early in the morning, Lin Feifei bumped into Ning Fei. He noticed she was running a fever and offered her medicine. The brief contact left Feifei flustered, and she mused that being single for too long had made her "love-starved" and that she needed to find a new target.
Shortly after, she received a call for a photo shoot. At the studio, the makeup artist initially ignored her, but when He Wei subtly draped his coat over her, the artist's attitude changed immediately. Later, in the dressing room, as Feifei struggled with a zipper, He Wei quietly entered and helped her. When her hair got tangled in his corsage, he gently freed it and pinned the flower in her hair.
Bi Qiu Jing called Zhou Shi to inform her that Li Ming Cheng now desired a set of calligraphy for his birthday. Meanwhile, Zhou Shi spotted Wei Qing on a lawn. He approached her, admitting he was in a bad mood and asking for her company. Zhou Shi shared her own coping mechanism: shopping and eating with friends. Wei Qing revealed he had no true friends, explaining, "Because I can't bear the touch of others."
He sincerely apologized for his past actions and asked if they could be friends. Feeling it was too easy, Zhou Shi challenged him: if he could move her without giving her food, gifts, or flowers, she would agree. Wei Qing confidently accepted.
