The vibrant city of Yong'an, known for its intricate network of bustling streets, found its heart in Juxian Alley. Within this lively district, two prominent establishments, the opulent Yunlai Tavern and the elegantly famed Guixiang Tavern, captivated diners. Yet, the recent talk of the town centered on an unassuming little eatery run by Shen Shaoguang and her family, offering culinary creations far beyond the current era's understanding. This unique tale began two months ago.

Shen Shaoguang, residing in Lianshan Hutong, aimed to revitalize her family's new diner by producing historical cooking videos. Her concept involved demonstrating modern cooking techniques to ancient people, with her ancestral home, Yunshui Manor, serving as the set. Her father, Shen Jianshe, mother, Li Fengxia, brother, Shen Shaojie, and niece, Shen Yangyang, readily joined. Together, they visited Yunshui Manor to offer prayers to their ancestors for the diner's prosperity.

Shen Shaoguang recalled stories from her great-grandfather about their family's illustrious past, which included a Vice Prefect of Capital Prefecture named Lin Yan marrying into their lineage. Convinced that Lin Yan’s presence would elevate her videos, Shen Shaoguang set out to find a male tourist to portray him. Following a man she hoped to recruit, she inadvertently stumbled upon the back entrance of the ancient manor.

Opening the door cautiously, Shen Shaoguang was met with the astonishing sight of a bustling ancient market. As confusion set in, a dense fog suddenly enveloped her from behind, forcing her to seek refuge in the unfamiliar marketplace. There, she discovered her family, equally disoriented. Shen Jianshe and Li Fengxia discussed the strange events, while Shen Shaojie, whom his family called Gongcai, initially dismissed it as an elaborate "script-killing" game, even admiring a wanted poster for its realistic artistry.

However, their playful assumption turned to stark horror when a man resembling the wanted poster was pursued by Jinwu Guards, collided with a sedan chair, fell, and died right before their eyes. The Shen family, finally comprehending their predicament, realized they had genuinely time-traveled. They secured lodging at an inn, using Shen Shaoguang’s 24-karat gold jewelry as payment. During a family meeting, Li Fengxia stressed the paramount importance of returning home, a sentiment shared by Shen Jianshe and Shen Shaojie.

Shen Shaoguang, known to her family as Jicai, proposed that Yunshui Manor, their point of entry, must also be their path back. Their subsequent attempts to re-enter the manor were thwarted by guards, who explained it was Vice Prefect Lin Yan’s private residence, prohibiting unauthorized access. After several days, with their remaining gold rapidly diminishing, Shen Shaoguang learned from the innkeeper that their ancestor, Lin Yan, was soon to assume his post in the capital.

She devised a plan: they would sell Jianbing Guozi to earn money and find an opportunity to approach Lin Yan. On the day of his inauguration, Emperor Yuanfeng, feigning illness, granted Lin Yan a private audience. Lin Yan recounted his successful handling of a corruption case against County Magistrate Dou, a relative of Noble Consort Dou, a revelation that initially displeased the Emperor.

Lin Yan, however, meticulously detailed the magistrate’s illicit hoarding of pepper—a commodity more valuable than gold—in quantities sufficient to supply Yong'an's East and West Areas for four years, highlighting the extreme suffering of the populace. He explained how he had secured evidence by exploiting a love affair between the magistrate’s subordinate, Yun, and the magistrate’s concubine, giving Yun the choice between exposing the corruption or facing ruin alongside his lover.

Convinced by Lin Yan’s compelling case, the Emperor agreed to the magistrate’s execution. When asked about his administrative approach, Lin Yan stated his intention to begin by reforming Juxian Alley, celebrated for its cuisine, emphasizing that "food matters the most to the people," and taking incremental steps.

The Emperor, aware of the political machinations and the powerful figures who viewed Lin Yan as a threat, advised caution, instructing him to focus on inspections and consolidate his position before implementing broader reforms in the volatile East and West Areas. As Lin Yan and his attendant, Liu Chang, journeyed towards the Capital Prefecture Office, they paused at Juxian Alley.

There, they found the Shen family's stall, where Shen Shaojie was loudly extolling Jianbing Guozi, weaving a fabricated tale of its origin in a legendary place called Tianjin, conceived by his "father" during his world travels. He employed an auction-style, limited-quantity sales pitch, beginning bids at five qian, which caused a stir among the crowd by inflating prices.

Lin Yan, observing these theatrics, intervened, pointing out the exorbitant pricing relative to the ingredients' cost and threatening to report them to the Market Office for market manipulation. Shen Jianshe, recognizing Lin Yan from their ancestral portrait, grew visibly anxious, while Li Fengxia swiftly apologized, effusively praising Lin Yan as a "dragon among men."

Lin Yan, accepting her apology, gave them a second chance, on the condition that they sell their Jianbing Guozi at the fair market price of one qian each. Later, Shen Shaoguang, still hopeful of making contact, waited outside the Capital Prefecture Office. When Lin Yan’s carriage arrived, she eagerly rushed forward, only to accidentally overturn her pancake cart, causing a perfectly round Jianbing Guozi to land squarely on Lin Yan’s face.
