Why Is He Still Single Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Yu Yu, an interior designer, possesses an extreme dedication to detail, a trait so pronounced that many find him pretentious. His pursuit of perfection even extended to his name; he changed it from Yu Dedao, a traditional name his mother gave him for longevity, to the more symmetrical Yu Yu. He believes that a decent life begins with such meticulous details. One day, at a cinema, Yu Yu confronted Gu Yejia, a doctor, claiming she was in his seat.
He explained his habit of sitting in that specific spot, which he had precisely calculated to offer the best audiovisual experience in the entire hall. Gu Yejia, however, pointed out that the purpose of buying tickets was to sit in one's assigned seat. She refused his request to switch, and soon after, Yu Yu's assistant, Shen Wu, called him away to deal with an urgent work matter.
At a renovation site, Yu Yu became agitated upon seeing a wall being painted green by Mr. Sun, the painter. He insisted the design blueprint specified "deep scarlet" and accused Mr. Sun of disregarding the plan. Shen Wu tried to intercede, explaining the homeowner had requested the green color. When the homeowner arrived and expressed satisfaction with the green, Yu Yu passionately argued that deep scarlet was elegant and dignified, perfectly suiting her noble temperament.
He warned that green would disrupt the room's color balance, increase costs, and potentially lead to emotional issues like irritability and anxiety. The homeowner, however, dismissed his concerns, stating her preference for green and asserting her authority. Frustrated, she called Lin Sa, Yu Yu's manager, to complain. Lin Sa later confronted Yu Yu, reminding him that a professional designer has no right to criticize a client's aesthetic and should focus on integrating practicality with design philosophy, not making "rookie mistakes."
To mend client relationships and promote his work, Lin Sa brought Yu Yu to a promotional seminar. Yu Yu, however, found the event filled with superficial guests and "smooth talkers," making him reluctant to participate. He saw it as a place for newcomers and questioned why he, a senior designer, needed to be there. Lin Sa explained he was there to "hold down the fort" and provide gravitas.
Yu Yu even chose to have Shen Wu give his presentation, showcasing his concept of the "warm zone" and "human warmth" in design, where home is a sanctuary for love and family meals. While wandering the venue, Yu Yu found a Tianjin noodles stall but critiqued it as inauthentic. He met a young woman named Andi (who preferred to be called Huaiqing), who admired his design philosophy. Inspired, Yu Yu decided to personally cook authentic Tianjin noodles for her.
However, by the time he finished, he found her chatting happily with a friend, making him feel like a fool. He handed the noodles to Shen Wu and left. Later, a friend of Yu Yu's teased him about his inability to connect with women, claiming he could annoy any woman within ten sentences. Yu Yu took this as a challenge. He approached Andi at her Blu-ray rental store, attempting conversation by comparing Tianjin noodles to curry.
When she chose curry, he asked what she thought of him. Her polite "Pretty good" was immediately followed by her hasty departure, much to his friend's amusement. Still unconvinced, Yu Yu tested his friend's "ten sentences" theory at a convenience store. He purposefully engaged the cashier in a series of odd questions about a loyalty card and chewing gum, ending with "Do you dislike me?" The cashier, clearly unnerved, stared at him in disbelief.
As Yu Yu left the convenience store, he briefly passed by Gu Yejia, though they did not interact. Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman, heartbroken after a breakup, was walking dejectedly down the street, unaware she had dropped her beloved doll. Yu Yu, who had picked up the doll, followed her. Initially startled and wary of him, Xia Xiaoman soon realized he was her new neighbor. Yu Yu, ever focused on details, commented oddly that "This wall is bad."
Back in their respective apartments, Xia Xiaoman played loud music to drown her sorrows, prompting Yu Yu to retaliate with his own loud music. When Xia Xiaoman came to complain about the noise, she found Yu Yu collapsed in pain. Believing it to be a severe hemorrhoid flare-up, she rushed him to Zhongjing Private Hospital. In the taxi, the driver referred to Yu Yu as her "husband," which she quickly corrected.
At the hospital, Yu Yu's condition was diagnosed as a strangulated hernia, a life-threatening condition. Gu Yejia, the attending physician, opted for a challenging manual reduction to avoid surgery, successfully returning the bowel to the abdominal cavity. She then ordered a CT scan for him. Later, when a nurse mentioned a rectal exam, Yu Yu, who thought he was admitted for hemorrhoids and was now feeling better, tried to escape.
Gu Yejia found his aversion amusing but sternly informed him that his apparent recovery was due to medication and that he still needed tests to prevent a relapse. She also noted his age, observing that he now answered calls with a simple "Hey" rather than "Hello." Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman's boyfriend, hearing she had taken a man to the hospital, reacted with extreme jealousy.
Yu Yu's family, including his mother, father, and uncle, also visited him, with his mother pushing him to find a girlfriend by offering him "red eggs" for good luck in love. Gu Yejia herself was facing similar family pressure to marry, enduring a series of blind dates where potential partners discussed topics like inheritance and having many children, which she found unsuitable for her desire for a partner with shared interests and easy conversation.
Days later, Shen Wu visited Xia Xiaoman to return the money she had advanced for Yu Yu's medical fees. He also gave her his own thoughtful gift, explaining that Yu Yu's initial gift (movie tickets and a lollipop from a lottery win) was rather meager and he had wanted to compensate. They exchanged WeChat contact information so Xia Xiaoman could reach him if Yu Yu ever needed help. Meanwhile, Yu Yu returned to work, still adhering to his strict standards.
He engaged in a heated argument with Mr. Sun over an unaligned line in a design, insisting it be torn down despite Mr. Sun's protests about his family's long history as craftsmen and the client's lack of complaint. During their physical altercation over the material, Yu Yu experienced a sudden, sharp anal pain, forcing him to back down. Lin Sa arrived and found Yu Yu in pain, scolding him for not having informed her about his condition earlier.
She jokingly blamed his "blunt" nature for his "straight guts" issues and advised him to avoid prolonged sitting to prevent further relapses. Shen Wu later asked Yu Yu to reimburse him for the more generous gift he gave Xia Xiaoman, to which Yu Yu insisted his original lottery prize gift was a symbol of his "good luck."
Episode 2 Recap
Yu Yu, an interior designer, expresses his annoyance when he learns that Shen Wu offered Xia Xiaoman money as compensation, believing his own "first prize" was a more honorable gift. He dismisses Xia Xiaoman as a difficult and noisy neighbor. When Shen Wu mentions Xia Xiaoman's "cute" appearance and "nice" name, Yu Yu informs him that she has a boyfriend named Dao.
Lin Sa, overhearing this, scolds Shen Wu for his inappropriate comments, reminding him of his own girlfriend, Wang Xiaoxiao. Yu Yu then displays a framed poster, clarifying it's not vomit but "seafood broth," which serves as a reminder to persistently dislike things he finds annoying, such as the contractor Sun, whom he regrets being lenient with. He then leaves, stating he is off to see a "vampire."
At the hospital, Yu Yu's brother-in-law, Zhong Liangchuan, a vice director, respectfully greets him and urges him to continue his treatment. Yu Yu, however, dismisses his medical needs, jokingly accusing Zhong Liangchuan of being poor and regretting marriage. Zhong Liangchuan, admitting to regrets, suggests Yu Yu is jealous because "no one likes" him. Yu Yu, confident, asserts that women do not dislike him, citing Dr. Gu as an example.
Later, Zhong Liangchuan attempts to sell a camera to Yu Yu for 20,000 yuan, claiming he needs to invest in a friend's restaurant. Yu Yu, aware of Zhong Liangchuan's secret spending, bargains him down to 10,000 yuan, threatening to reveal to his sister, Yu Jie, that Zhong Liangchuan bought the camera with private funds.
After Zhong Liangchuan appeals to their brotherly bond, he reluctantly agrees to the 10,000 yuan price on the condition that the camera is not a final sale and that he must be allowed to redeem it later. Yu Yu then gives Zhong Liangchuan a bank card, revealing the password is his birthday, which happens to be that day. Zhong Liangchuan, surprised, says they must celebrate with a cake.
Yu Yu rejects a pair of figurines Zhong Liangchuan offers as a gift, calling them childish. Meanwhile, Gu Yejia is interrupted during a meal by her father, who, taking advantage of a "last blind date of the month" loophole, arranges multiple online video dates for her. Annoyed by his intrusive methods, Gu Yejia abruptly ends the call. Yu Yu, having observed the scene, approaches her to offer unsolicited advice.
He tells her that her elders' pressure stems from their "empty lives" and "private desires," and while blind dates can hasten marriage, he also makes remarks that she's an "aging leftover woman." Gu Yejia, irritated, recognizes him as the man from the cinema who insisted on changing seats. Yu Yu, unperturbed, even praises her multiple-date strategy, comparing it to product advertising.
Gu Yejia suggests he needs medical treatment, but Yu Yu lists common reasons people avoid doctors and confidently predicts she will eventually return for treatment herself. Witnessing the exchange, Zhong Liangchuan comments that if even the cultured Dr. Gu dislikes Yu Yu, it highlights Yu Yu's difficult personality. Annoyed, Yu Yu rescinds his offer to lend Zhong Liangchuan money, stating that "business is business."
Back at the design studio, Lin Sa learns from Shen Wu that the contractor Sun has gone on strike, refusing to work unless Yu Yu apologizes for allegedly injuring him. Yu Yu denies the injury, but Lin Sa insists he apologize, threatening that he and Shen Wu will have to lay the flooring themselves if Sun doesn't return. Later, on his birthday, Yu Yu visits Sun.
He exposes Sun's fake injury and questions the strike, emphasizing that Sun's actions negatively impact other people's homes. Yu Yu offers a cake, clarifying it is not an apology gift. Sun, in turn, finds Yu Yu's gesture "childish" and "dramatic," though his wife appreciates the malted milk powder Yu Yu brought, a treat Sun enjoys.
At the office, Shen Wu expresses to Lin Sa that Yu Yu's apology to Sun signifies his personal growth, noting it's his first such act in the eight years they've worked together. Shen Wu jokingly suggests Lin Sa should "settle things" with Yu Yu for the greater good, but Lin Sa strongly objects to such a "sacrifice." Shen Wu reveals his hope that Yu Yu's improvement will lead to a raise, enabling him to marry his assistant, Xiaoxiao.
Despite considering a grand celebration for Yu Yu, Shen Wu and Lin Sa ultimately decide against it, anticipating Yu Yu would dismiss it as "childish" and a "silly game." Yu Yu's mother calls, unable to celebrate with him, and he declines her offer to have Yu Jie cook for him, preferring to cook for himself. Later, Shen Wu hesitantly calls Yu Yu to wish him a happy birthday, then quickly hangs up.
Annoyed, Yu Yu immediately calls back to discuss work. Shortly after, Yu Yu receives and misses a retracted text from Lin Sa. He calls her, and she feigns ignorance before telling him the finance department needs his insurance card. Xia Xiaoman's friend, Qingqing, reaches out to Yu Yu for help after Xia Xiaoman, heartbroken from a breakup, becomes unreachable. Yu Yu climbs from his balcony to hers, startling Xia Xiaoman, who is on the phone with Qingqing.
Confused and scared, she questions his presence, but he lets Qingqing in. Qingqing arrives to find Xia Xiaoman distressed and recounting the "creepy uncle" on her balcony. As Qingqing tries to comfort her, Xia Xiaoman faints. Yu Yu calls for an ambulance and takes her to the hospital. There, a nurse informs him that Dr. Gu has pumped Xia Xiaoman's stomach and her condition is stable but requires careful monitoring, leaving Yu Yu to care for her after Qingqing leaves.
Still at the hospital, Yu Yu orders a birthday cake. He quietly celebrates his birthday alone, lighting a candle, making a wish, and blowing it out. He then takes a slice of cake to Gu Yejia, offering a sincere apology for his previous comments about her blind dates, admitting his comparison of her to a "commodity" was a poor example from an era of slavery. Despite Gu Yejia's clear annoyance, Yu Yu concludes his apology.
As Yu Yu prepares to finally leave the hospital, he is suddenly struck by intense anal pain and collapses. Gu Yejia examines him, dismissing his protests against a rectal exam and reminding him that Zhong Liangchuan specifically requested she perform it. She blames his severe relapse on his failure to follow medical advice. During the uncomfortable exam, Gu Yejia softly wishes him a happy birthday. Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman wakes up, disoriented.
Gu Yejia explains she drank too much due to her breakup and had her stomach pumped. She reassures Xia Xiaoman that she did nothing wrong and guides her through a cathartic stress-release exercise, encouraging her to "grow through heartbreak." Xia Xiaoman expresses her resolve to be more discerning in future relationships and is delighted to discover her close proximity to Gu Yejia, inviting her for meals and movies.
Gu Yejia accepts, reminding her to balance food enjoyment with health and planning to rest after her night shift. Later, Yu Yu arrives at Gu Yejia's workplace with a framed banner in a box sealed with wax, explaining the seal is a reference to ancient doctors like Bian Que and Hua Tuo. The banner reads, "Though talkative, medical skills are solid."
Gu Yejia questions the "talkative" part, and Yu Yu explains he gave it to her because she was the only one to wish him a happy birthday, even though he claimed he didn't need it. Gu Yejia sarcastically thanks him for his "recognition" and directs him to retrieve his test report. In her clinic, Yu Yu jokes about keeping his pathology slides.
Gu Yejia informs him that polyps are also known as "tumors," which immediately sends Yu Yu into a morbid contemplation of writing his last will, fearing cancer. Gu Yejia quickly assures him his polyps are benign but warns of dangerously high cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. She advises a strict low-fat, low-salt, low-sugar diet. Yu Yu dismisses her advice, declaring his life is his own to decide, even if it means indulging in fatty meat.
Gu Yejia tells him to take care, and as he leaves, he reminds her of the banner's message about her being "talkative." Yu Yu then meets a new client regarding a design project. He begins to elaborate on exotic ingredients like air-flown spinach and Italian parsley, hinting at a luxurious design philosophy.
Shen Wu attempts to explain Yu Yu's approach, emphasizing that Yu Yu prioritizes "happiness" in a home and advocates for high-quality, imported materials for essential areas like the kitchen and bedroom. However, this significantly increases the project's cost. The client, intending to simply renovate the apartment for rental income, objects to the excessive expenditure, refusing to pay for a stranger's "happiness." Yu Yu counters, arguing the client would gain a sense of "achievement and gratitude."
Unsatisfied, the client threatens to hire a competitor, Ou Yang Design. Yu Yu tries to discredit Ou Yang by showing examples of copied designs, but the client remains unimpressed, valuing aesthetics over originality. Shen Wu intervenes, securing a two-day extension to propose a compromise. Observing the chaotic interaction, Lin Sa silently concludes that Yu Yu is "out of his mind."
Episode 3 Recap
Yu Yu, infuriated, railed against Ou Yang's work, dismissing it as mere flattery for young girls and a stain on the design profession. He argued vehemently with Lin Sa, who reminded him of her recommendation, only for him to inflate project costs by 50,000 yuan. Yu Yu defended this, claiming it purchased a higher quality of life.
A colleague pointed out this sum was half of Shen Wu's salary, and when Yu Yu complained about always paying for Shen Wu when they went out, Shen Wu joked that he felt "kept." Lin Sa then criticized Yu Yu for not giving Shen Wu a raise, highlighting the difficulty of marriage in Shanghai on such a small income.
Yu Yu impatiently steered the conversation back to Ou Yang, prompting Lin Sa to challenge him to demonstrate his superiority with better designs rather than just complaining. As Lin Sa left for the restroom, Yu Yu muttered about "lazy donkeys." Later, Yu Yu visited a timber market, intent on acquiring a specific type of wood. The vendor informed him it was already reserved by a competitor for an eight-meter-tall museum mascot.
Yu Yu questioned the mascot's temporary nature and eventual disposal, contrasting it with his own vision to transform the wood into a dining table to bear life's experiences and a bed to hold joys and sorrows, emphasizing a more profound, lasting purpose. Meanwhile, Zhong Liangchuan called Yu Yu, mentioning that Gu Yejia had shared Yu Yu's health test results. Annoyed, Yu Yu asked his brother-in-law, Zhong Liangchuan, to tell Gu Yejia he disliked her "tattling."
Zhong Liangchuan tried to convince Yu Yu to eat a healthy meal at his house, but Yu Yu refused, instead vividly describing his craving for barbecue. Subsequently, Gu Yejia discussed Yu Yu's defiance with Zhong Liangchuan at the hospital. She expressed her frustration with Yu Yu's "annoying, immature, weird, proud, scheming, stubborn, complicated, and difficult" personality, stressing that Zhong Liangchuan, as family, should encourage him to follow medical advice. Zhong Liangchuan promised to invite Yu Yu for dinner that evening.
Separately, a car saleswoman advised Xia Xiaoman, her struggling colleague, to actively seek potential clients, suggesting Shen Wu. Later, Shen Wu invited Xia Xiaoman to dinner at a barbecue restaurant. Xia Xiaoman insisted on splitting the bill, but Shen Wu, with impressive frugality, meticulously used a stack of coupons and even a new user voucher on Xia Xiaoman's phone, slashing the 528 yuan bill to a mere 64 yuan.
He even organized a group purchase with other diners, saving an additional 100 yuan, much to the restaurant manager's delight. Despite his resourcefulness, Xia Xiaoman found his extreme thriftiness a bit overwhelming. Yu Yu's sister, Yu Jie, found him insufferably annoying. At a family hotpot dinner, Yu Yu was forced to eat only salad due to his medical condition. He complained about the limitations of marriage, using his sister's domestic life as an example of lost freedom.
Yu Jie, annoyed by his lecturing and lack of help, playfully questioned their shared parentage, leading to lighthearted jabs about their appearances. Their mother relentlessly pressed Yu Yu about marriage, even quoting ancient laws that punished families if men did not marry by age twenty. She claimed her nagging was "scientific advice" and "gentle reminders."
When Yu Yu, frustrated by the health discussion, linked the "three highs" to Gu Yejia, his mother immediately inquired about Gu Yejia's marital status and suitability as a match, even after his sister, Yu Jie, revealed Gu Yejia had examined Yu Yu's backside. His mother dismissed the awkwardness, seeing it as an advantage that could accelerate their relationship, and even asked if Gu Yejia was forty.
Yu Yu finally snapped, urging them to eat their cooling "grass," referring to his salad. While grocery shopping, Yu Yu remembered Gu Yejia's stern medical advice regarding his high cholesterol, blood pressure, and sugar levels. He initially tried to leave the supermarket but returned to exchange his full-fat milk for skim milk, even asking for the brand the staff member drank.
Outside, he overheard Xia Xiaoman on the phone with a friend, complaining about her new "stingy" neighbor, who was Shen Wu's boss, Yu Yu himself. She cited his lack of a raise for Shen Wu and his cheap gift of two movie tickets and a lollipop as proof of his extreme frugality, joking he was the type to lick a yogurt lid for ten minutes.
Yu Yu, realizing he was the subject of her complaints, paused before continuing on his way. Back home, Yu Yu retaliated by blasting his TV, making Xia Xiaoman believe he was petty and seeking revenge. Yu Yu then confronted Shen Wu, asking if he was stingy and why he constantly used coupons. Shen Wu defended his actions as a "life skill" that brought him "extraordinary satisfaction" by eating the same meal for less.
Yu Yu also revealed that Xia Xiaoman had called Shen Wu stingy and uninterested. Shen Wu was upset that Xia Xiaoman had revealed his complaint about not getting a raise. The argument escalated when Yu Yu called out people who gossip, which Shen Wu took as a personal insult. Lin Sa, entering with snacks, cut short their argument.
She informed Yu Yu that his design had been chosen over Ou Yang's, and the client praised his dedication, also mentioning she had politely declined the client's request to visit Yu Yu's home. Shen Wu then unwisely showed Yu Yu a video of Ou Yang on vacation in Paris, implying Ou Yang had "assigned" the client to Yu Yu, which Lin Sa quickly made him turn off to avoid another conflict.
The company had planned to celebrate Yu Yu's project win with barbecue, but Lin Sa and Shen Wu both declined, with Shen Wu humorously citing Yu Yu's silent eating habits as a cause for his indigestion. Undeterred, Yu Yu went alone to a barbecue restaurant, ordering an extravagant feast of premium meats, soup, and dessert, proudly rejecting the vegetable platter. He ate by himself with headphones on, enjoying his meal.
Meanwhile, Gu Yejia and Xia Xiaoman, after watching a boring movie, encountered Yu Yu at the couple's restaurant. Xia Xiaoman pointed out Yu Yu eating alone, noting he was at the top of the loneliness ranking and ignored medical advice by ordering all meat. Gu Yejia acknowledged their unusual acquaintance, finding him strange. The next day, Yu Yu injured himself falling during exercise due to having eaten too much meat, landing him back in the hospital.
Gu Yejia reiterated that his frequent hospital visits were a direct result of ignoring her medical advice. Lin Sa arrived and remarked on Gu Yejia's beauty, much to Yu Yu's annoyance. Yu Yu, defiantly stating he wouldn't get a girlfriend, angrily left. Lin Sa, realizing Yu Yu couldn't cook with his injured hand, pondered who would feed him. Lin Sa, seeing Yu Yu's injured hand, sarcastically offered to cook for him.
To her surprise, Yu Yu agreed but, ever particular, insisted he didn't like people in his house because their presence made the air "stuffy," and requested Lin Sa deliver the food to his apartment entrance. Later, Shen Wu, while helping Yu Yu with groceries, encountered Gu Yejia and Xia Xiaoman. He formally introduced himself to Gu Yejia, mentioning Yu Yu often talked about her, a statement Yu Yu quickly questioned.
Xia Xiaoman's drain was blocked, and Gu Yejia suggested Shen Wu fix it. After Shen Wu successfully cleared the drain, Xia Xiaoman invited him to dinner, saying she needed a man to taste her cooking. During dinner, Xia Xiaoman apologized to Shen Wu for earlier embarrassing him at the restaurant, clarifying her rants were directed at Yu Yu, not him.
Yu Yu, cooking sullenly alone in his apartment, complained about his "hard to swallow" one-handed dinner, then loudly played music to drown out the laughter from the apartment next door, refusing an invitation to join them. His mother called, warning him that eating alone could lead to mental unhealthiness. Later, Yu Yu arrived at Xia Xiaoman's apartment with a foul-smelling chive and fennel juice, which he insisted was healthy.
Xia Xiaoman and Gu Yejia discussed Shen Wu's extreme frugality, with Xia Xiaoman admiring his ability to drastically reduce a 500 yuan meal to 64 yuan. They also talked about Yu Yu's silent eating and loneliness. The conversation shifted to relationships, with Xia Xiaoman comparing dating to driving without a license, and Gu Yejia lamenting that her own "car" (relationships) hadn't been "driven" in seven or eight years and was now gathering dust.
Yu Yu, misunderstanding the metaphor, interjected that a car left for so long would be completely rusted and "scrap," sparking Gu Yejia's anger. After Gu Yejia stormed off, Shen Wu and Xia Xiaoman explained Yu Yu's blunder, urging him to apologize publicly. Yu Yu, still somewhat confused, took a megaphone and repeatedly apologized to Gu Yejia on the street, shouting that he was talking about the car, not her.
Episode 4 Recap
Yu Yu hurried, holding a loudspeaker and repeatedly apologizing to Gu Yejia, insisting he was referring to a car, not her. As his loudspeaker ran out of power, Gu Yejia called out to him. Yu Yu apologized again, clarifying that his earlier comment about something "rusting" was indeed about a car, not her. He then added that she looked "pretty young," which she found embarrassing. Yu Yu quickly corrected himself, emphasizing that she was "very young."
Gu Yejia chuckled at his earnest, self-reproaching demeanor. Li Huaiqing, the owner of a disc shop, spotted Yu Yu talking to a woman outside and quickly ushered his friends inside. Curious about Yu Yu, who rarely interacted with women, Li Huaiqing brought two coffees and tried to discreetly listen in on their conversation, hoping for gossip, but Yu Yu eventually shooed him away. Yu Yu then took Gu Yejia inside Li Huaiqing’s shop, explaining the Blu-ray movies.
When Gu Yejia suggested watching them on her laptop, Yu Yu deemed it a "waste of heaven's gifts," arguing that a laptop screen was too small for films, especially those shot on film, which require a large projector for proper texture and an immersive viewing experience. He suggested she buy a projector, and Li Huaiqing offered Gu Yejia a 30% discount as Yu Yu’s friend. Gu Yejia thanked him.
Later, Gu Yejia was surprised when Yu Yu actually bought a TV suitable for watching movies and had it delivered to her home. Yu Yu visited her office, looking pleased with its setup. Before leaving, he asked if she enjoyed the movie he sent, and she politely replied that she did. However, when Gu Yejia visited Li Huaiqing's shop to buy some romance films, she unexpectedly ran into Yu Yu.
Li Huaiqing accidentally mentioned that she had fallen asleep less than ten minutes into "The Great Escape," a film Yu Yu had given her. Yu Yu confronted her, calling her a liar for saying she liked it. Gu Yejia explained it was merely out of politeness. Li Huaiqing then asked Yu Yu to pay for Gu Yejia’s purchase, to which Yu Yu grumbled about having only small change.
Yu Yu then startled Gu Yejia again, asking if she was looking at properties, implying she wanted a large one for future marriage. He speculated she was contemplating a bigger place for an "accidental marriage" and living with a man. She questioned his phrase "accidentally get married." Gu Yejia questioned why a famous designer like him lived in a small, poorly soundproofed apartment.
Yu Yu explained he lived alone and the sound issues were due to Xia Xiaoman's uncle's shoddy renovation. He also mentioned that he himself had bought the collector's edition of "The Great Escape" and found it hilarious, laughing every time, unlike her who fell asleep. Meanwhile, Yu Yu’s mother, while visiting her son-in-law Zhong Liangchuan at the hospital, deliberately feigned illness to see Gu Yejia.
She observed Gu Yejia intently, like a prospective daughter-in-law, and tried to give her homemade snacks. Gu Yejia politely refused, citing hospital rules against accepting gifts from patients. Yu Yu’s mother insisted she wasn’t a patient and the snacks were inexpensive, then cheekily suggested Gu Yejia could return a 50 yuan gift. She also "forgot" a fan at Gu Yejia's place, telling Gu Yejia that Yu Yu would retrieve it and treat her to coffee.
She revealed Yu Yu’s childhood nickname, "Dao" (from his original name Yu Dedao), claiming his current name "Yu Yu" sounded like a coachman, and described him as introverted. At dinner, Yu Yu's mother praised Gu Yejia to Yu Yu and Zhong Liangchuan. Zhong Liangchuan, who had secretly asked Yu Yu for money earlier, inadvertently revealed that their mother had met and been introduced to Gu Yejia, which angered Yu Yu. Yu Yu called Gu Yejia to discuss his mother's visit.
Gu Yejia expressed her reluctance to meet him solely for the fan, offering three options: express delivery, self-pickup, or a third party, then hung up. Gu Yejia later discovered Yu Yu had booked an appointment with her through the hospital system. She called him, advising him to cancel to avoid wasting public resources, and instead offered to meet him on her day off. When Yu Yu eventually met Gu Yejia to retrieve the fan, he tried to scare her.
He then scrutinized her bag, criticizing its disorganization and "useless" contents. Gu Yejia then sheepishly admitted she had forgotten the fan at home, in the pocket of a different jacket. Yu Yu proceeded to highlight the superior organization of his own bag, with its clear compartments. Gu Yejia jokingly suggested he buy a similar bag for his mother, implying she shared Yu Yu's mother's forgetful tendencies.
At work, Lin Sa complained about a client, who lost their job, wanting to cut their budget by 50,000 yuan. She found Yu Yu too rigid for refusing to compromise his design principle of an open kitchen, believing his stubbornness would hinder him from finding a wife. Shen Wu suggested a closed kitchen to save costs, but Yu Yu rejected it, citing his principles, which worried Shen Wu about losing his commission.
Yu Yu commented that dating two girls takes double the effort, leading Lin Sa to clarify that Shen Wu was only dating Wang Xiaoxiao. Yu Yu bought an expensive, vintage board game called "Simulated Life," a variant of Master Chess, designed in 1972 and published in 1979, costing over 1,000 yuan. Lin Sa was exasperated by his frivolous spending, especially given Shen Wu's financial struggles.
Xia Xiaoman later complained to Yu Yu in the elevator about her 4,000 yuan monthly property fee compared to his 1,000 yuan, highlighting her financial strain from using credit services like Huabei, Jiebei, and Baitiao. Yu Yu, playing the board game alone, mused that marriage was a "shackle" leading to a wife demanding more money and eventual abandonment, deciding he no longer wanted to play. Lin Sa admired Yu Yu's design but noted its unaffordability for clients.
Shen Wu, overhearing Lin Sa mention his dating life to Wang Xiaoxiao, called Lin Sa a "blabbermouth." Shen Wu arranged a meeting with Xia Xiaoman and Wang Xiaoxiao. Wang Xiaoxiao, observing Xia Xiaoman's expensive makeup and perfume, concluded that she and Shen Wu were "innocent," reasoning that Shen Wu couldn't afford her and she wouldn't be interested in him.
The initial tension eased as Xia Xiaoman defended herself against being seen as materialistic, and the two women bonded over Shen Wu's coupon-using habits, which Wang Xiaoxiao proudly confirmed teaching him. Wang Xiaoxiao also noted that they hadn't met often enough to develop feelings. When Shen Wu suggested they all eat together using a discount coupon, Xia Xiaoman declined, having other plans, while Wang Xiaoxiao left with Shen Wu for dinner.
Xia Xiaoman then invited Gu Yejia to go shopping and told her that Shen Wu and Wang Xiaoxiao were a perfect match. Xia Xiaoman also remarked that Gu Yejia had a certain resemblance to Yu Yu. While browsing bags, Gu Yejia commented on a partitioned bag, similar to Yu Yu's, but stated she preferred less organized bags, finding joy in rummaging through items. Xia Xiaoman bought two shirts of the same style but in different colors.
When Gu Yejia questioned this, Xia Xiaoman explained her habit of buying multiple colors of items she liked. Xia Xiaoman then asked Gu Yejia to style an outfit for her, hoping a new look would herald a new life. Later, they saw Yu Yu trying on a green hat. Shen Wu also heard about it and found it difficult to comment. Yu Yu eventually wore the green hat to work, prompting further remarks from Shen Wu.
Episode 5 Recap
After Xia Xiaoman spotted Yu Yu wearing a green hat, she sent a photo to Shen Wu, who created memes from it. Xia Xiaoman then shared the memes with her colleagues. Shen Wu discreetly signaled to Yu Yu about the hat's unfortunate cultural meaning, but Yu Yu, oblivious, thought Shen Wu simply didn't appreciate good aesthetics. Lin Sa also found the green hat odd, noting that most people wouldn't want to wear one.
However, she was surprised to see Yu Yu's latest design blueprints. He had finally considered the client's perspective, changing materials and adding practical renovations to lower the cost. Shen Wu, equally surprised, picked up the drawings to examine them. Both Shen Wu and Lin Sa, recognizing Yu Yu's newfound receptiveness, showered him with compliments, praising his green hat to flatter him.
Later, Xia Xiaoman created a group chat called the "Idle Group" to share the memes of Yu Yu, joking with colleagues about how annoying he was. Zhong Liangchuan, Yu Yu's brother-in-law, asked Yu Yu to lend him 10,000 yuan. Their daughter overheard this and announced to her mother that her father had money.
Zhong Liangchuan tried to explain he needed the money for social obligations, citing numerous weddings and funerals, but Yu Yu, ever the businessman, only gave him 9,000 yuan, citing the high-interest terms of a previous loan. Soon after, Yu Yu's sister asked Zhong Liangchuan if he would support their daughter's interest in piano lessons. Yu Yu realized his brother-in-law was in a tough spot when his sister allocated the money Yu Yu had just lent to cover the piano lessons.
The sister justified it by saying their daughter's future in music was more important than Zhong Liangchuan's social dinners. Yu Yu sighed, remarking that marriage was a "constant game of strategy." Feeling frustrated, Yu Yu went to a bar. He observed a man lavishly proposing to a woman, which made him wonder why people valued love based on money.
He had a drink and discussed his philosophy with the bartender, explaining that he and his current companion, a flight attendant he met on a trip to Paris, were merely "met by chance," engaging in "adventures" without commitment. He revealed that to create a quiet environment for conversation on their return flight, he had booked the entire first-class cabin. He concluded that money could bring him not only romantic encounters but also "gratitude and respect."
Later, while out walking, Yu Yu saw Xia Xiaoman energetically promoting beer outside another bar, enduring lewd comments from several men. Recalling her previous inquiry about property fees, Yu Yu became thoughtful. Yu Yu then visited Gu Yejia, where he learned from a conversation she'd had with Lin Sa that using money wisely could indeed strengthen human connections.
Lin Sa had described how Yu Yu's revised design, which cut costs while meeting the client's needs, allowed the client to hire a caregiver for his ill mother, easing his wife's burden. Inspired, Yu Yu returned home, intending to genuinely help Xia Xiaoman. He presented her with a wad of cash, but his attempt at kindness was undermined by his condescending remarks. He warned her that she would "age quickly and lose her charm" without a boyfriend.
He also mentioned seeing her glaring at harassing customers as if she'd "smash a bottle on them," advising her to livestream instead, where filters would hide her aging. He added that giving her the money was no different than buying "rubbish" for him, and it gave him a "sense of helping someone." Xia Xiaoman was furious, throwing the money to the ground and calling him "useless."
The next day, Gu Yejia saw that Yu Yu had booked an appointment with her again, suspecting he had done something wrong. Indeed, Yu Yu sought her help because his attempt to assist Xia Xiaoman had backfired. After Gu Yejia spoke with Xia Xiaoman, Xia Xiaoman realized she had misunderstood Yu Yu's intentions.
Yu Yu had called Xia Xiaoman's uncle directly, accusing him of illegally expanding his flat and ruining the soundproofing, which led to a fine that Xia Xiaoman was unknowingly paying in installments as part of her increased property fees. Yu Yu bluntly told the uncle to take responsibility for his own actions and not burden his niece. The uncle, prompted by Yu Yu's stern words, apologized to Xia Xiaoman and paid both the fine and a year's property fees.
Xia Xiaoman, grateful, told Gu Yejia that Yu Yu was "a good person," but his way of handling things was "too awkward" and "condescending," making him "arrogant for no reason," which is why he'd "never find a wife." Gu Yejia agreed that Yu Yu had good intentions but was timid and used arrogance to mask his inner fear, suggesting Xia Xiaoman "tease him a little" next time. The following morning, Xia Xiaoman saw Yu Yu on her walk.
Yu Yu, feeling awkward, tried to avoid her, but Xia Xiaoman stopped him. She thanked him sincerely for his intervention with her uncle, specifying that his call was a "deep and honest" conversation, not a scolding, and that his efforts allowed her to stay in her flat. Yu Yu seemed unaccustomed to such direct gratitude, but he couldn't resist a final jab, claiming her initial angry reaction only meant "he gave too little."
Xia Xiaoman quickly told him not to "ruin her good impression." Yu Yu later visited Gu Yejia, telling her how happy and relaxed he felt after Xia Xiaoman's thanks. However, his good mood was short-lived when he accused Gu Yejia of "pretending to have a girlish heart." Annoyed, Gu Yejia promptly told him to "get out." At work, Shen Wu groaned when he heard about potential weekend overtime due to a last-minute client design change.
However, Yu Yu, in a rare display of kindness, dismissed him, saying Shen Wu would only "get in the way" and was a "negative energy element," allowing Shen Wu to enjoy his weekend. Lin Sa interpreted this as Yu Yu's "tsundere" way of caring. In the elevator, Xia Xiaoman, remembering Gu Yejia's advice, decided to tease Yu Yu. She playfully greeted him that evening and again the next morning, remarking on his working on a Saturday.
Yu Yu found her behavior strange. Meanwhile, Lin Sa observed Yu Yu's recent actions and thought he was finally "living like a normal person." Seeing his sister's family, Yu Yu muttered that his brother-in-law was a "coward" for giving in to his wife's demands for piano lessons. Yu Yu had four free Happy Valley tickets that he had refused to give his sister earlier.
Encountering Xia Xiaoman in the elevator, he spontaneously offered her the tickets, telling her she could sell some for soda. Xia Xiaoman, finding his gesture odd, accepted them. Later, Lin Sa told Yu Yu, whom she called her "money tree," that he needed to get out more for creative inspiration. Yu Yu, still wearing his green hat, went to Happy Valley alone, where he ran into Gu Yejia. They enjoyed the park together.
Later, while Gu Yejia was watching a drama on her phone, Yu Yu annoyingly spoiled the ending. On a subsequent bus tour to Jinxi Ancient Town, a guide named Chunling made a historical error, which Yu Yu publicly corrected. An elderly couple on the bus, observing Yu Yu and Gu Yejia, asked if they were married.
To simplify things, Yu Yu didn't correct them, leading an old lady to compliment "Mrs. Yu" on her beauty and offer her homemade sweet potato slices. After the eventful weekend, Yu Yu returned to work. Shen Wu told him that his own trip to Happy Valley with his girlfriend, Xia Xiaoman, and her friend had been chaotic, revealing that his group all ended up buying new shoes after Xia Xiaoman's flew off on a rollercoaster.
He added that they had bought a pair for Yu Yu too but that he didn't want to talk about it anymore. Yu Yu, recalling his own trip, replied that he also preferred not to discuss his weekend.
Episode 6 Recap
Xia Xiaoman watched a video Gu Yejia had recorded, surprised to see their unique neighbor, Yu Yu, proudly wearing a green hat on a tour bus. Gu Yejia complained to Xia Xiaoman about her "cursed fate" with Yu Yu, describing him as insufferably mean throughout the trip, "like a peacock showing off," constantly bragging about his knowledge to the point of making the tour guide cry.
Finding the story amusing, Xia Xiaoman suggested they go on future trips together, emphasizing the importance of a good travel companion. She then proposed they attend an upcoming fireworks festival. Gu Yejia was hesitant, recalling she had attended one with her ex-boyfriend last year, but Xia Xiaoman encouraged her to move on. Gu Yejia suggested inviting more people to make it livelier, and Xia Xiaoman agreed.
Meanwhile, Yu Yu received a call from his mother, urging him to thank a girl for a thoughtful return gift—a jade pendant for "peace in all seasons" that Gu Yejia had tied to a fan. Confused about this "return gift," Yu Yu was nonetheless instructed by his mother to show his gratitude, not just with words, but by "thinking for himself" what to do.
At a bar, seeing couples display affection, Yu Yu found the task daunting, musing that fireworks should be watched with "one's own woman." He decided that the best way to thank someone was with a handmade gift that showed "sincerity" and personal "thought," and began soldering a capacitor. Gu Yejia was also at the bar, engrossed in a meeting with a foreign professor about medical research.
Yu Yu interrupted their meeting to address the "return gift," awkwardly telling her she didn't need to send him any more gifts. He then tried to invite her to the fireworks, mentioning a "secret" spot with an "amazing view" and promising red wine, painting a vivid picture of "sweet on the tongue, brightness in the eyes, and 'boom-boom' in the ears." He told her not to tell Xia Xiaoman or Shen Wu.
Gu Yejia questioned why he was sharing a secret spot if he didn't want others to know, and Yu Yu stiffly replied that if she "insisted" on accompanying him, he "wouldn't object." Gu Yejia immediately declined, stating she already planned to go with Xia Xiaoman. Yu Yu, disparaging Xia Xiaoman's reliability, predicted her chosen spot would be "overly crowded" or "shabby," but Gu Yejia countered that enjoying the company was paramount, a joy Yu Yu wouldn't understand.
Later, Wang Xiaoxiao, Shen Wu, Xia Xiaoman, and Gu Yejia eagerly planned their outing. Xia Xiaoman, bursting with excitement, led them to an unfinished building, claiming it was her "secret base" with a "wide open view." However, a security guard quickly appeared, informing them that his company had taken over the abandoned building and they had to leave. Feeling unreliable, Xia Xiaoman apologized.
Gu Yejia then found Yu Yu on his balcony, apologized for her earlier refusal, and asked if she could still watch the fireworks with him. Yu Yu, maintaining his aloof demeanor, repeated that if she "insisted" on watching with him, he could only agree "out of courtesy." Gu Yejia then happily called her friends over. Yu Yu, visibly uncomfortable, reluctantly allowed them to stay, explaining that the building owner was a college classmate who lent him the space.
The group decided to have dinner there, and when asked how it felt to be thanked, Yu Yu coolly replied, "Not bad." Yu Yu then surprised Gu Yejia with a pair of VR headsets he had assembled, calling it a "shuttle device" that "works great for fireworks." They put on the headsets and were immersed in a breathtaking display of beautiful and dreamy virtual fireworks. Gu Yejia, deeply impressed, thanked Yu Yu for the incredible experience.
Later, Wang Xiaoxiao asked Yu Yu for the fireworks video. He agreed to share it but declined their dinner invitation, stating he needed to go home to wash clothes and tidy up, as he had been too busy with work. Yu Yu later appeared at the hospital, waiting for Gu Yejia before her shift and denying he was eavesdropping. He requested stronger painkillers, which Gu Yejia refused, advising him against self-medication.
Yu Yu, in turn, deduced that Gu Yejia's busy work life left her no time for housework. He proudly declared himself diligent and clean, ensuring his home was "tidy and spotless," but added that he never allowed "outsiders" into his room. Gu Yejia feigned regret, and Yu Yu called her "lazy," to which she accused him of sarcasm.
Meanwhile, at their design studio, Lin Sa and Shen Wu goaded Yu Yu into taking on a complex project that Ou Yang and other designers had refused, citing it as impossible. Believing it would "slap them in the face" and secure his title as "designer of the year," the ambitious Yu Yu confidently accepted, calling it a "piece of cake."
Gu Yejia, in a voiceover, mused that people often seek difficult challenges to feel unique, but this pursuit can become an "inner struggle" and a form of "torturing yourself." Shen Wu tried to assist a struggling Yu Yu, who, insisting on his "dedication to art," sent him away. Gu Yejia later noticed Yu Yu following her, who explained it was to avoid awkward silence.
When Shen Wu arrived at Yu Yu's building offering to help with the design, Yu Yu refused him entry, suggesting he work in the hallway. Yu Yu bragged about having "independent space," implying Shen Wu lacked such freedom. At Xia Xiaoman's place, she served Gu Yejia a dish she invented called "looks black but tastes great" and shared her aspirations to be a full-time housewife.
Gu Yejia, in turn, described her ideal partner as an ambitious man willing to share housework. Xia Xiaoman confirmed that Yu Yu was surprisingly diligent, which, combined with his refusal to let anyone into his home, piqued Gu Yejia's curiosity. Later, Xia Xiaoman persuaded Gu Yejia to get dressed up, and they went to Yu Yu's apartment with Xia Xiaoman's homemade dish. Yu Yu grudgingly accepted a small portion.
When asked why he forbade anyone from entering his home, he described it as an "independent, private space" for "cultivation," like protagonists in fantasy dramas. The women left, calling him "strange," and Xia Xiaoman created a meme of him for their group chat. Yu Yu's stress escalated, culminating in a nightmare where Ou Yang replaced him. He woke up and played loud music, annoying Gu Yejia, who was staying with Xia Xiaoman.
The next morning, a visibly exhausted Yu Yu confronted Shen Wu and Lin Sa, angrily calling them "traitors" for "abandoning" him in his dream. He refused Lin Sa's offer of tea and demanded a triple shot of coffee, reiterating his determination to complete the project himself. Yu Yu eventually collapsed in a supermarket. At the hospital, Gu Yejia diagnosed him with "over fatigue" and advised forty-eight hours of rest. Yu Yu, dismissing her medical advice, tried to leave to work.
Shen Wu then revealed that Ou Yang's condition for taking over the project was to "change" Yu Yu's design. Enraged, Yu Yu tried to storm off to confront Ou Yang, but Shen Wu and Lin Sa physically restrained him. Yu Yu lashed out, calling Shen Wu disrespectful. Shen Wu, asserting his role as Yu Yu's apprentice, insisted he had to look after him, leading Yu Yu to yell at him to "get out." With Lin Sa's help, Shen Wu got Yu Yu to lie down, where Yu Yu despaired, feeling like a "failure" for having his work altered by another designer.
Episode 7 Recap
Shen Wu confided his negative feelings to Xia Xiaoman and Gu Yejia. Xia Xiaoman questioned why he wouldn't discuss these issues with his girlfriend, instead calling them out. Shen Wu explained he preferred not to bring such negativity home. Gu Yejia understood, noting that friends often serve this purpose. Their conversation was interrupted by Ouyang's arrival at the bar. Shen Wu and Ouyang exchanged a polite "Hi."
Gu Yejia remarked on Ouyang's seemingly wealthy appearance, noting his Maison Margiela coat, and showed some interest. Shen Wu, however, gave a friendly warning, urging her to stay far away from Ouyang, stating that not only did Yu Yu despise him, but almost everyone did, and she would soon understand why he was so annoying. Meanwhile, Yu Yu was in the hospital, enraged that his design had been altered. He insisted on being discharged, ignoring Gu Yejia's medical advice.
Gu Yejia, as his doctor, commanded him to rest, warning him about his "three highs" and recent fainting episode, emphasizing the serious consequences of not treating himself. Yu Yu, however, adamantly stated that his work was everything, and his entire life revolved around it, accusing Gu Yejia of assuming he was merely afraid of Ouyang stealing his project. He clarified that he simply didn't want his design deleted or rewritten.
Gu Yejia countered that resting would allow him to return refreshed and outshine Ouyang, a point Yu Yu grudgingly conceded. Later, Lin Sa visited Yu Yu, bringing Cantonese slow-simmered soup, attempting to mend their rift. She asked if he was still angry and assured him he would like the songs on a tape she brought.
She explained that with the contract signed and the schedule fixed, and Shen Wu unable to handle the project, Ouyang was the only person who could complete the work. She promised Ouyang would preserve as much of Yu Yu's design as possible and advised Yu Yu to incorporate more flexibility into his future design cycles. When Yu Yu inquired about the client's reaction, Lin Sa vaguely stated she could handle it and left.
Shen Wu was at his girlfriend, Wang Xiaoxiao's, home, having been sent away by Yu Yu. He complained that Yu Yu had "snapped" at him for no reason and said he wanted him gone, declaring he would never return. However, Yu Yu soon appeared at Wang Xiaoxiao's place, asking for Shen Wu.
After being told Shen Wu was inside, Yu Yu instructed Wang Xiaoxiao to tell Shen Wu he didn't need him, angry that Shen Wu had given his design to Ouyang to "mess up." Wang Xiaoxiao agreed that was Shen Wu's fault, but Yu Yu then began to soften, attributing the decision to Lin Sa's concern for his health. He still found Shen Wu's "talking back" rude but admitted he had provoked Shen Wu first.
Despite criticizing Shen Wu's lack of improvement, Yu Yu confessed he would feel "a bit off" if Shen Wu suddenly disappeared, comparing it to a computer losing its mouse. He abruptly ended his monologue and left, leaving Wang Xiaoxiao to ponder if that constituted an apology. Hearing Yu Yu had shown up in person, Shen Wu surprisingly decided to go back to work, dismissing Wang Xiaoxiao's surprise by saying "Guys don't overthink stuff like that."
Later, Gu Yejia called Yu Yu, mock-apologizing for having run away from the hospital, then directly asking if he had lost a USB drive labeled "Yu Yu Design Studio." She revealed she had it and offered to return it only if he let her into his apartment. Yu Yu, eager to retrieve his work, agreed to let her come. When she arrived, he swiftly snatched the USB drive from her and slammed the door shut, much to her annoyance.
Xia Xiaoman and Shen Wu then arrived, joining Gu Yejia outside Yu Yu's apartment. Gu Yejia, still frustrated, told them Yu Yu had run out of the hospital for no reason. Xia Xiaoman wondered what mysterious things Yu Yu was hiding in his apartment. Shen Wu proposed a tactic: he would knock, rush in, get thrown out, and then report what was inside. Gu Yejia, amused, commented that Yu Yu's craziness was rubbing off on her.
Suddenly, they heard loud banging from Yu Yu's apartment. Concerned, Shen Wu wondered if Yu Yu had fainted again. After failing to get a response, they considered climbing across the seventh-story balcony but dismissed it as too dangerous. Shen Wu then revealed that Yu Yu had thinned the 54-centimeter wall between their apartments by 14 centimeters and replaced the soundproofing material, making it easier to break through.
Gu Yejia grabbed a hammer, but Shen Wu took it, then smashed a hole in the shared wall. They found Yu Yu sprawled on the floor. Shen Wu comically declared Yu Yu "surrounded" and demanded he "put down your weapons and kneel." Yu Yu woke up, irritated, asking why they had smashed his wall. He clarified that he hadn't fainted but merely "fell asleep" out of exhaustion and was "too lazy" to pick up his fallen chair.
Gu Yejia administered medication, surprising Yu Yu, who wondered how she knew what he needed. She advised him to remember his medicine the next time he ran from the hospital. As Yu Yu attempted to leave, she reminded him about his shoes. When she offered to walk him out, he instructed them to use the front door if they were bringing food later.
Shen Wu later asked Gu Yejia about Yu Yu's apartment, but she could only recall "nothing special," just a desk with a computer, as she had been too focused on treating him. Xia Xiaoman identified the music playing from Yu Yu's apartment as "Merci," the French word for "thank you," remarking on Yu Yu's "deep and subtle" way of expressing himself.
Sometime later, Lin Sa was shown in a beautifully designed room, expressing how wonderful it would be to live in such a warm and cozy space, and asking to thank Yu Yu, only to be told he was on leave. Gu Yejia, after cooking for Yu Yu, asked if he liked the food. Yu Yu bluntly stated it was "too salty" and warned her not to cook it for others. Gu Yejia internally grumbled about his ingratitude.
Yu Yu then found himself at a wedding, mistakenly bringing a funeral wreath due to a misunderstanding of his mother's vague voice message. He tried to offer a wedding gift of 1314 yuan, symbolizing "forever," but the groom's relative preferred 1688 yuan, "get rich all the way," mocking Yu Yu's "goodbye all the way."
The bride, mistaking the wreath for a threat from an ex-girlfriend, instigated a fight, which escalated as Yu Yu tried to clarify his relationship to the groom. Back home, Yu Yu confronted his mother, who explained her message was about his uncle's son's wedding, with "seven bridesmaids" in the bridal suite. Lin Sa called, urging Yu Yu to come to a client meeting. His mother insisted he apologize to the wedding party and made him wear a red suit.
At the meeting, Yu Yu's colleague awkwardly explained that Yu Yu believed "dressing festively" showed the "greatest respect" to clients. Yu Yu proceeded to offer unsolicited and pessimistic advice to clients about having two bathrooms and living with in-laws. Another colleague commented on Yu Yu's "mean mouth" despite his red attire. Yu Yu then abruptly left, stating he was going to "escape reality" and "spend money." Feeling dizzy after being assaulted, Yu Yu visited the hospital for a CT scan.
Gu Yejia confirmed his scan was normal, disappointing him. He recounted the wedding brawl, blaming his mother's ambiguous voice message. In the waiting room, Yu Yu complained about the high air conditioning temperature. When he tried to discuss it with an elderly gentleman, Gu Yejia intervened, pulling the elder away and addressing him as "Dad." Gu Yejia's father, seeing Yu Yu, suspected he was his daughter's boyfriend.
To escape her father's relentless attempts to set her up on blind dates, Gu Yejia quickly declared Yu Yu was her boyfriend. Yu Yu, bewildered, tried to deny it, but Gu Yejia kept up the charade. Gu Yejia's father then questioned Yu Yu about his name and his knowledge of the historical figure Yu Boya, clearly suspicious. Seeking refuge from her father's matchmaking efforts, Gu Yejia fled to Xia Xiaoman's apartment.
She recounted the incident where she pretended Yu Yu was her boyfriend to escape her father, who was pressuring her into three blind dates a month. Meanwhile, Yu Yu encountered Gu Yejia's father again, who appeared to be following him. Yu Yu, uncomfortable, confronted him. Gu Yejia's father revealed that Yu Yu was his daughter's "only male friend" and, seeing how lonely Gu Yejia was in Shanghai, asked Yu Yu to "take her on a date," which surprised Yu Yu.
The next morning, Xia Xiaoman prepared freshly ground five-grain soy milk for Gu Yejia, who praised Xiaoman's domestic skills. Yu Yu called Gu Yejia, affectionately addressing her as "Jiajia," and stated he wanted to see her at their usual spot that afternoon, adding he "just really wanted to see" her. Xia Xiaoman teased Gu Yejia, suggesting Yu Yu might be asking her out or even confessing.
Gu Yejia, calling Yu Yu "weird," decided to respond to his "strange" behavior with "strange tactics" and proceeded to dress up extravagantly for their meeting. When they met, Yu Yu was visibly taken aback but still called her "Jiajia."
Episode 8 Recap
Gu Yejia confronted Yu Yu, sensing his unusual and reserved demeanor, and asked directly why he sought her out. Yu Yu casually called her by her childhood nickname, "Jiajia," which made her uneasy and prompted her to threaten to leave. He quickly became serious, urging her to consider marriage for her own good, reminding her that she was no longer young and that her late mother would have wanted her to be happy.
Gu Yejia was startled by his knowledge of her mother's passing. She then noticed her father sitting nearby, realizing they had conspired. Playfully, she teased her father about his lipstick, which looked like he had eaten a dragon fruit, and his past blind date failures, accusing him and Yu Yu of ganging up on her. Yu Yu clarified it was merely a "deal," expressing his annoyance with her father.
Yu Yu then remarked that one of them (Gu Yejia) was self-deluded and the other (her father) was a busybody, before leaving. Gu Yejia firmly told her father she would not participate in blind dates or marry, asserting her desire to remain single and asking if he truly wished for her unhappiness. With that, she departed, mentioning other plans. Yu Yu privately expressed his frustration about being entangled in Gu Yejia's family matters.
Meanwhile, Gu Yejia, still irritated, passed Xia Xiaoman on the street without a greeting. Yu Yu, known for disliking crowds, was informed by Lin Sa that a large, noisy night market was opening near his home. To everyone's surprise, he claimed to love night markets and announced his intention to go, leading Lin Sa and Shen Wu to joke about him experiencing early menopause. Xia Xiaoman, wandering through the night market, spotted Yu Yu repeatedly failing to scoop goldfish.
She found his struggle amusing, but noted that he eventually gave up and bought one, snapping a photo to send to Gu Yejia. Gu Yejia's father later visited Yu Yu's building. He presented Yu Yu with a book he claimed to have authored, asserting his status as a "real wellness expert," and asked to be invited in. Yu Yu, however, led him up several flights of stairs, citing elevator maintenance.
Upon reaching his floor, he placed his newly acquired goldfish into a tank outside his door and then brought out a table and chairs, explaining that almost no one was ever permitted inside his apartment. The father, slightly put off, questioned how his daughter could befriend such a person.
Yu Yu offered him leftover xiaolongbao, which the father enjoyed, remarking that "age hits the teeth first," to which Yu Yu replied that "age hits everything, as long as the heart stays young." The father then had Yu Yu sign the book, declaring it a valuable collectible that he no longer needed to read. Soon after, Gu Yejia arrived.
Yu Yu, worried about being seen with her father, quickly hid, telling him that Gu Yejia was looking for his female neighbor. Gu Yejia found Yu Yu in the hallway, sipping tea and reading by his single fish. She suggested he get another for companionship, but Yu Yu later explained to the fish that being single was better to avoid competition and overcrowding. Later, Yu Yu visited Gu Yejia, who is a doctor, complaining of stomach discomfort.
She diagnosed him with mild gastroenteritis and asked about his recent diet. He mentioned eating xiaolongbao from two days prior, noting that while he only ate one, Gu Yejia's father consumed nineteen, speculating her father must be in much worse shape. Gu Yejia tried to call her father, but his phone was off. Yu Yu, knowing his hotel, was compelled to take her there. They found her father ill and his phone uncharged.
Yu Yu offered to pay his medical expenses since the dumplings were his, but the father refused. Gu Yejia insisted on taking him to the hospital, but he was stubborn. Yu Yu attempted to leave, but Gu Yejia persuaded him to use their "elders' rapport" to convince her father to go, which he reluctantly did.
In the car, Gu Yejia blamed Yu Yu for the spoiled food, leading to a bickering match filled with folk proverbs until she silenced them both. Her father criticized her lack of manners, suggesting it was why she remained unmarried, a point Yu Yu echoed, adding that a mother-in-law would "kick her out." Gu Yejia retorted that she wished to kick them both out.
Suddenly, Yu Yu revealed to a stunned Gu Yejia that her father was remarrying, explaining that her father was too embarrassed to tell her himself. Her father confirmed the news, describing his fiancée as kind, feminine, and virtuous. Visibly upset, Gu Yejia declined her father's wedding invitation, citing other plans. Her father then sought Yu Yu's advice on how to convince Gu Yejia to attend.
Yu Yu's team presented a revised design plan to a client family, showcasing how they successfully maintained two bathrooms while incorporating clever storage solutions. The client expressed gratitude for meeting their complex needs, which Yu Yu humbly dismissed, remarking that ultimately only the couple would reside there. Shen Wu and Lin Sa offered supportive comments and blessings, diffusing any potential tension.
Later, Gu Yejia's father visited her at the hospital with food, concerned she might be hungry after her late shift. Gu Yejia, initially distant, shared her long-held resentment, believing he had forgotten her mother and that their family had dissolved after her passing. Her father explained that he would take long walks to cope with missing them both.
Gu Yejia countered that he seemed happier after her mother's death, and this perception fueled her aversion to blind dates, fearing a marriage where one partner could be so easily forgotten. Her father reassured her by bringing her dishes her mother used to make, proving he remembered every detail. Moved to tears, Gu Yejia apologized.
When she asked where he found the food so late, he revealed that Yu Yu had prepared it without hesitation after learning they were her mother's special recipes. Gu Yejia then promised to attend her father's wedding.
After he left, Gu Yejia recorded an emotional voice message for her deceased mother, sharing that her father had not forgotten her, introducing Yu Yu as a quirky man similar to her father, and playfully asking her mother for advice on how to deal with such men. Gu Yejia acknowledged Yu Yu's attentiveness to small details despite his eccentric behavior.
Later, at her father's wedding, Yu Yu teased her about her red outfit and her future prospects, joking that with her father's new, equally stubborn wife, any future husband would have to face two difficult in-laws. There, Gu Yejia encountered her blind date, Mr. Zhang, who complimented her attire. He presented her with a detailed personal booklet, a suggestion from her father, and advised her to update her blind date photo, joking it resembled a "romance scam."
He also told her about his new "DIY dumpling shop." During their conversation, Gu Yejia seized an opportunity to escape when Xia Xiaoman called, feigning a hospital emergency. Gu Yejia then met Xia Xiaoman at her panda-themed apartment. Xia Xiaoman contrasted their homes: hers filled with dolls, Gu Yejia's with books. Gu Yejia described Mr. Zhang as "okay" but not her type, finding him humorless.
Xia Xiaoman showed Gu Yejia a collection of storybooks, including "Little Women," which reminded Gu Yejia of her past frustration at the library when she could never borrow the book. The story led to a discussion about marriage not being a woman's sole purpose. Gu Yejia then confided in Xia Xiaoman about a past engagement that ended when she realized their fundamental values were incompatible, causing her to lose confidence in their future.
Elsewhere, Yu Yu offered unsolicited advice to a reflective Xia Xiaoman, suggesting her goal should be a "reliable man." He contrasted Shanghai's average annual salary with the nineteen million yuan required for financial freedom. Upon learning she earned more than the average, Xia Xiaoman abandoned the goal and decided to pursue handsome men instead. Yu Yu then suggested she consider older, divorced, or widowed men, as they were more likely to be wealthy, which she found rude.
Gu Yejia's blind date, Mr. Zhang, turned out to be a client of Yu Yu's design firm. During a renovation, Mr. Zhang confronted Yu Yu's employee, Old Sun, about a crooked door frame. A neighbor then complained about sawdust entering her home. When Old Sun dismissed her as "dramatic" behind her back, Mr. Zhang overheard and criticized Old Sun's rudeness. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, and Mr. Zhang was hit in the nose.
Back at the office, Shen Wu claimed he saw Old Sun deliver the punch. However, the client demanded an apology from the firm's boss, putting pressure on Yu Yu. Lin Sa emphasized the need for Yu Yu to apologize to prevent Mr. Zhang from involving the police or property management. Yu Yu vehemently refused, stating, "I didn't hit him," and labeled those who complain as "childish."
Lin Sa reminded him of his own numerous complaints that month, which he defended as acting out of "public spirit." Ultimately, Lin Sa pressured Yu Yu to apologize. He reluctantly agreed but instead went to the property manager, requesting access to the construction site's surveillance footage to "find the real culprit" and clear his name.
Episode 9 Recap
Shen Wu returned to the office and was surprised to see Yu Yu back so quickly, asking if he had already apologized. Yu Yu calmly stated he hadn't gone yet, explaining that he needed to revise a drawing immediately for work but was heading to a construction site. He then asked Shen Wu to handle the drawing revision and send it to him once done. When Shen Wu tried to turn on his computer, he found it was off.
Yu Yu eagerly offered his own computer, stating the drawing was urgent. Once Shen Wu opened Yu Yu's computer, he discovered a video on the desktop. The video clearly showed that Mr. Sun was the actual person who attacked Mr. Zhang, proving Yu Yu's innocence. Lin Sa observed Yu Yu looking triumphant, like a peacock showing off, as he glanced at Mr. Sun.
Soon after, Shen Wu arrived at the construction site and made an exaggerated, almost comical apology to Yu Yu. Lin Sa was initially confused but then understood everything after seeing the clarification video, realizing she had wrongly accused Yu Yu. She asked Yu Yu why he had gone to apologize if he wasn't the one who committed the act.
Yu Yu replied that an apology costs nothing, and as the team's designer, it was his responsibility to take ownership of a team member's mistake. He further added that, as Churchill once said, taking responsibility for others is an act of greatness. Lin Sa remarked that Yu Yu had grown and was starting to act like a leader. Yu Yu, enjoying the praise, instructed them to bow before him.
Lin Sa and Shen Wu were very impressed by Yu Yu's handling of the situation, finding his actions commendable. They immediately became flattering, bowing deeply to apologize to him. Yu Yu seemed quite pleased by their deference. Shen Wu privately felt that Yu Yu had changed, displaying a mix of pride and stubbornness. Lin Sa also sensed a shift in Yu Yu, as if he had been stimulated by something, making him different from the person she once knew.
Yu Yu bought a small watermelon and went to visit Gu Yejia. He showed her a picture of her blind date, making sarcastic comments. Gu Yejia understood his underlying good intentions. Yu Yu then offered to make dumplings for her. Later, Xia Xiaoman called Gu Yejia. Upon learning that Yu Yu was making dumplings for her, Xia Xiaoman became excited and even suggested calling more people to witness Yu Yu's culinary skills.
While making dumplings, Yu Yu was unsure how many folds were traditionally made. He called his mother to ask. His mother, hearing Gu Yejia's voice in the background, realized Yu Yu was at Gu Yejia's place and became a bit flustered, quickly hanging up. Soon after, Gu Yejia started receiving numerous calls from people who had heard the news from Xia Xiaoman, making her regret telling her friend. Despite the commotion, Gu Yejia found Yu Yu's dumplings to be delicious.
She was curious why he excelled only at making dough-based dishes. Yu Yu explained that he ate mostly dough dishes for five years while studying architecture at Tianjin University. He particularly praised Tianjin's famous noodles with eight toppings. At that moment, Gu Yejia's blind date, Mr. Zhang, arrived. He was delighted to see Gu Yejia but grew noticeably reserved upon seeing Yu Yu.
Yu Yu, holding the watermelon, thanked Gu Yejia for giving him the courage to apologize to Mr. Zhang. Gu Yejia clarified that Mr. Zhang accepted the apology because he was her blind date and had been trying to ask her out. Yu Yu immediately retorted, asking if she still hadn't given up on the idea of marriage. Gu Yejia found Yu Yu too blunt and difficult to communicate with.
Yu Yu then proceeded to criticize Mr. Zhang's dumpling shop as unstable and unsuitable for Gu Yejia, suggesting she find someone "roughly like herself." Gu Yejia was annoyed, pointing out Yu Yu was not much better, to which Yu Yu humorously replied he had an extra watermelon.
Lin Sa and Shen Wu attempted to persuade Yu Yu to meet a new client, a wealthy artist named Luo Han, for a large 500-square-meter project that would generate good publicity and allowed creative freedom, especially since the artist specifically requested Yu Yu. Yu Yu initially expressed strong resistance, stating he hated parties.
However, upon hearing about the generous budget, the large scale of the project, and the artist's insistence on his design, Yu Yu reluctantly agreed to take the job. He then informed his colleagues that the gathering required a female companion. When they suggested he pick one, he dismissed them. Later, while walking home, he invited Xia Xiaoman to attend the artist's party with him, enticing her with promises of good food and encounters with wealthy artists.
At the party, Xia Xiaoman found Luo Han to be peculiar, and Wang Xiaoxiao remarked that the artist bore some resemblance to Yu Yu. Luo Han approached Xia Xiaoman, complimenting her beauty and inviting her to try his "Journey Bicycle." He went on to describe the bicycle as embodying his "glorious youth" and "passion from younger days." Yu Yu, observing Luo Han's art, openly criticized one piece displayed, calling it pretentious and lacking vitality, praising only its Rococo-style frame.
Luo Han, however, revealed that he only made the frame, not the painting itself, and was pleased by Yu Yu's discerning eye. Impressed by Yu Yu's artistic insight and unique perspective, Luo Han confidently decided to entrust the renovation project to him, and they planned to sign the contract soon. Meanwhile, Zhong Liangchuan, Yu Yu's brother-in-law, asked Yu Yu for help.
Yu Yu's mother was staying with Zhong Liangchuan's family indefinitely, and Zhong Liangchuan explained the difficulties of living with her, from her strict routines to her particular tastes. As a son-in-law, he felt he couldn't ask her to leave without causing tension. Seeing his brother-in-law's predicament, Yu Yu went to their home to speak with his mother. However, the conversation was immediately derailed as his mother interrogated him about his relationship with Gu Yejia.
Yu Yu tried to downplay it, stating they were simply doctor and patient, but his mother scoffed, asking what kind of patient makes dumplings at a doctor's house. She then insisted on shadowing him on future dates to monitor their progress. Amid the frustrating exchange, Yu Yu accidentally spoiled a cartoon for Zhong Liangchuan's child. Having failed to address the original problem and now causing more chaos, Yu Yu was told by his frustrated brother-in-law to just go home.
On his way home, Yu Yu encountered Xia Xiaoman, who was being harassed by Luo Han, the artist. Xia Xiaoman was visibly distressed but felt compelled to endure it to protect the project and her colleagues' jobs. Yu Yu firmly told her not to tolerate such behavior. He later spoke with Xia Xiaoman over the phone about Luo Han, asking why she didn't just block him.
Xia Xiaoman explained it felt impolite and that she worried about the project affecting Yu Yu, Shen Wu, and Wang Xiaoxiao, who needed the work. Yu Yu, in turn, described Luo Han as a "citrus person" who "marries all kinds of fruit and produces all kinds of fruit," but then told Xia Xiaoman to just mind her own business.
The next morning at the office, Yu Yu announced to Lin Sa and Shen Wu that he was refusing the artist's job. When pressed for a reason, he clarified that it wasn't because of Xia Xiaoman, but because he strongly disliked Luo Han's view of a home as merely a venue for lavish parties that could be torn down and redecorated on a whim.
Yu Yu argued that his design was art, just like Luo Han's paintings, and if Luo Han intended to demolish it casually, there was no point in creating it. Lin Sa and Shen Wu reminded him of the financial implications, the signed contract, and the many people in the company relying on the project. Yu Yu offered to pay the penalty himself, then abruptly left the office, leaving his colleagues frustrated.
Back home, lost in thought, Yu Yu heard a doorbell. It was Xia Xiaoman, who thanked him for his concern but assured him he didn't need to sacrifice the project for her. She admitted she was worried about affecting him and her colleagues, who needed the project, and confessed she would have tolerated the harassment if not for him.
Yu Yu, however, reiterated that his decision wasn't solely because of her, calling her the "final straw" in his existing reluctance to take the job. He questioned why he should have to tolerate such a client. Later, Gu Yejia met Lin Sa at a DVD rental store. Lin Sa, still fuming, recounted how Yu Yu had abandoned the major project despite a signed contract, frustrating everyone.
Gu Yejia advised Lin Sa not to get angry with Yu Yu, acknowledging that he was just "that way" and not likely to change. She suggested Lin Sa vent to her instead to avoid internalizing the stress. Soon after, Gu Yejia went to see Yu Yu, who immediately suspected she wanted him to make dumplings for her. She admitted she did, and he began preparing them.
Gu Yejia carefully broached the topic of the artist's project, asking if he would reconsider. Yu Yu firmly said no, explaining he couldn't create a design for someone whose core values clashed so severely with his own understanding of a "home." He argued that while she deals with "lives" as a doctor, he deals with "homes" as a designer, both requiring responsibility.
Gu Yejia then used the analogy of his friends, Lin Sa and Shen Wu, tolerating his quirks, suggesting that if he made them happy by taking the project, he would ultimately be happier too, as they are his closest people. She highlighted that their tolerance for him came from respect, not obligation. This conversation prompted Yu Yu to reflect deeply on the nature of interpersonal relationships and the responsibilities of friendship.
The next morning, Yu Yu arrived at the office and announced that he had decided to take on Luo Han's project. His colleagues were overjoyed, planning celebrations and trips. Yu Yu, in a lighter mood, told Shen Wu to order anything for lunch except dumplings. Lin Sa immediately called Gu Yejia to share the good news, thanking her profusely and calling her a "miracle worker" for persuading Yu Yu. Gu Yejia, however, modestly said she hadn't really said much.
Episode 10 Recap
Yu Yu accepts the demanding artist's renovation project, a decision that impresses Lin Sa, who notes how Gu Yejia's words always seem to resolve Yu Yu's issues. Yu Yu dedicates himself to the work, meticulously designing on site with his team. Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman and Gu Yejia watch the movie "Little Women." Xia Xiaoman reflects on the film, appreciating the heroine's bravery, but expressing her desire for both freedom and the traditional joys of marriage and a large family.
Gu Yejia reassures her that knowing what she wants is admirable. Yu Yu, while trying to get a copy of the same movie from an old friend, is teased for his sudden interest in it. Still immersed in his work, Yu Yu builds a sophisticated remote-controlled race car. Wearing a mysterious helmet, he enters a children's remote model car racing championship. His car, named "Who Borrowed The Little Woman?"
, showcases extensive modifications, including reduced drag, improved handling, a lightweight body with titanium alloy screws, and even wind tunnel testing, allowing it to reach speeds over 100 kilometers per hour. Yu Yu skillfully maneuvers his car, making bold turns and defending his lead against opponents like Bu Jingyun and Nie Feng, eventually winning the trophy. However, his victory is met with scorn from the children.
Lin Sa questions why an adult would compete against kids for a prize, while Shen Wu declares Yu Yu's self-satisfied behavior "shameless" and "hopeless." Later, Yu Yu encounters Xia Xiaoman buying expensive dog food. He dismisses her deep affection for her dog, Dao, as a mere "mammal instinct" for food, contrasting it with the practical benefits of having a child.
Soon after, while Yu Yu is working on an invention outside his apartment, he discovers Xia Xiaoman writhing in pain on the ground. He rushes her to the hospital, where Gu Yejia diagnoses her with appendicitis, requiring minimally invasive surgery and a week-long hospital stay. Gu Yejia also notes a minor bone fracture in Xia Xiaoman's hand, which Xia Xiaoman dramatically attributes to Yu Yu "crushing it" with his heel.
Concerned for Dao, Xia Xiaoman first calls a friend, Qingqing, who cannot care for the dog due to landlord restrictions and a roommate's objections. Shen Wu visits Xia Xiaoman in the hospital. Gu Yejia, noticing that Xia Xiaoman can't eat the calcium-rich ribs Yu Yu had sent, suggests she and Shen Wu eat them instead. Shen Wu then agrees to take care of Dao.
He initially tries to bring Dao to the design studio, but Yu Yu adamantly refuses, citing potential messes and noise. Shen Wu bonds with Dao, finding it adorable, but his girlfriend, Xiaoxiao, demands he choose between her and the dog, pushing him to prioritize "peace at home." With no other options, Shen Wu and Gu Yejia are left contemplating what to do with Dao in a park.
Yu Yu appears, initially reluctant and protesting, but ultimately agrees to foster Dao for five days, attributing his decision to "compassion" for them. He is given Dao's food and toys. Yu Yu brings Dao home and, despite his initial reluctance, meticulously cares for the dog. He precisely weighs out 80 grams of dog food, prepares wagyu steak for it, and even plays the soundtrack of "Hachi: A Dog's Tale" while conversing with Dao.
He sternly warns Dao not to touch his precious belongings like speakers, records, and models. When Dao initially refuses to eat its kibble, Yu Yu eats his own meal with gusto, threatening to throw Dao and its food out if it doesn't comply, eventually leading Dao to eat. Meanwhile, before her surgery, Xia Xiaoman expresses extreme anxiety about Dao, especially upon learning it is with Yu Yu.
She dramatically attempts to cancel her surgery to "save" Dao, but Gu Yejia calmly prevents her. Yu Yu finds Dao to be quite disruptive. One day, while he is preoccupied with a client meeting discussing a budget increase, Dao's barking from home creates distractions. Later, Xia Xiaoman calls Yu Yu, wanting to see Dao.
Yu Yu playfully, yet firmly, refuses to let her see Dao via video call, jokingly that he "ate it," much to Gu Yejia's exasperation as she reassures Xia Xiaoman. Seeking to rehome Dao, Yu Yu first approaches Lin Sa, who initially claims to have overcome her dog hair allergy but then quickly retracts, citing pollen allergies. Next, Yu Yu pleads with his mother to take Dao.
However, his mother also refuses, citing her own dog hair allergy and expressing her disapproval of people prioritizing pets over marriage, much to the disappointment of Yu Yu's niece who wishes to play with Dao. To monitor Dao, Yu Yu installs a security camera at home. Upon seeing the chaos Dao creates, he rushes back fully equipped to clean up the mess. Despite Gu Yejia's offer of help from colleagues, Yu Yu insists on caring for Dao himself.
He begins taking Dao on morning runs, gradually accepting the dog into his life. One day, Dao accidentally knocks over and breaks Yu Yu's cherished racing trophy. Enraged, Yu Yu gives Dao to Gu Yejia, but not before giving her a detailed list of instructions for Dao's care, including specific dog food portions, paw-washing routines, preferences for medium-well wagyu steak without black pepper, and mentioning Dao's fear of large dogs.
Shen Wu consistently reminds Yu Yu about the comfort of having someone waiting at home, which Yu Yu finds irritating. However, Yu Yu later realizes his trophy was broken by the wind, not Dao, filling him with guilt. Soon after, Gu Yejia calls Yu Yu, panicked, reporting that Dao has gone missing, having pulled free from its leash during their walk. Yu Yu, calling her "dumb," immediately rushes off in a taxi to help search for Dao.
Episode 11 Recap
Yu Yu arrived frantically, joining Gu Yejia in the urgent search for Dao. Gu Yejia suddenly spotted a shape in the water that looked like Dao, her eyes widening in alarm. Without a second thought, Yu Yu plunged into the pond, seeming to forget everything else in his determination to find the dog. Fortunately, it was just a toy dog. Yu Yu surfaced, letting out a sigh of relief.
They then noticed Dao calmly lying in the distance, watching their chaotic search with an innocent gaze. Gu Yejia thanked Yu Yu and told him to be careful as she left. Soon after, Xia Xiaoman was discharged from the hospital. Seeing that Dao had been well cared for, she felt a new sense of appreciation for Yu Yu, acknowledging that he could be dependable.
When Yu Yu saw Xia Xiaoman just out of the hospital and carrying a large package, he instinctively took the bag and joined her in the elevator. Later, Gu Yejia confessed to Xia Xiaoman that she had accidentally lost Dao a few days prior, and that Yu Yu had jumped into a pond to rescue what he thought was the dog. Xia Xiaoman wasn't angry, noting that Dao was safe.
She commented that she had always thought Yu Yu was self-centered, but someone who cares for pets must also know how to care for people. Xia Xiaoman's financial situation was already tight, and her hospital stay had left her even more so, as Yu Yu had covered her medical bills. To repay him, she had to take an advance on her next month's salary, leaving her with barely anything for the current month.
One evening, Yu Yu saw Xia Xiaoman in her yard, talking to Dao. She was expressing her worries about Dao's picky eating habits and her inability to afford expensive food, even suggesting Dao might need to go on a diet due to their financial struggles. Yu Yu, understanding her predicament, offered to buy dog food, but Xia Xiaoman, feeling embarrassed, quickly took Dao and left.
On another occasion, Xia Xiaoman asked to borrow some soy sauce from Yu Yu, explaining that her streaming service membership had auto-renewed and deducted 22 yuan, leaving her short on cash. Yu Yu initially chided her for her laziness, then gave her not just soy sauce, but a full selection of his condiments, including oil, salt, vinegar, chicken powder, and oyster sauce. He humorously reminded her of her promise to "return two for one," calling it an investment.
That night, Xia Xiaoman, feeling a touch of sadness while listening to music from Yu Yu's apartment, approached his door and asked if he wanted to own a car. Yu Yu, momentarily taken aback, began listing the drawbacks: the difficulty of finding parking, the high cost of ownership, and even the discomfort of wearing a helmet on his scooter, which he said pressed on his Yuzhen acupoint. Seeing his dismissive reaction, Xia Xiaoman left feeling dejected.
The next morning, Yu Yu appeared preoccupied. At the office, he sketched a car and tried to persuade Gu Yejia to buy it. Gu Yejia explained that she had no plans to buy a car, but her elderly father had recently purchased a new Harley, and she worried about him riding a heavy motorcycle at his age.
She then proposed a bet: if Yu Yu could convince her father to sell his Harley, she would buy a car for Xia Xiaoman. Yu Yu accepted the challenge and began regularly accompanying Gu Yejia's father on walks to persuade him. Yu Yu argued that a Harley was not suitable for a married man with a family, questioning where groceries would go or how his wife would stay dry during bad weather.
He also pointed out that individuals over 70 were restricted from riding heavy motorcycles, implying that her father was approaching that age, and suggested her father sell the bike to him. Gu Yejia's father, moved by Yu Yu's persistence, reluctantly agreed to transfer ownership of his beloved Harley to Yu Yu, but asked for a proper farewell ceremony.
The successful deal also led to another astonishing outcome: Yu Yu had inspired Gu Yejia's father to purchase five cars from Xia Xiaoman's dealership. Xia Xiaoman was overjoyed, feeling like she was on the verge of becoming wealthy, and declared she would treat her best friends to a lavish meal the following month. Gu Yejia received a phone call from her father, inviting her to his Harley farewell ceremony.
Suspecting her father might be trying to set her up on a blind date, Gu Yejia reluctantly agreed to attend and asked Xia Xiaoman to join her, framing it as a fun outing and an opportunity to solidify Xia Xiaoman's client relationship. At the ceremony, Yu Yu, Gu Yejia, and Xia Xiaoman were present. Gu Yejia's father's biker gang, known as "Steppenwolf," turned out to be a group of impressive and fit individuals.
As a playful initiation, they tackled Yu Yu to the ground. Later that evening, the old friends joyfully played music and celebrated. Gu Yejia's father was heartbroken to part with his cherished motorcycle but understood that age required him to let go of certain hobbies. Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman happily dreamed of her five car sales. Gu Yejia acknowledged that Yu Yu had handled the situation remarkably well. Yu Yu invited Gu Yejia to watch the sunrise.
Gu Yejia commented on Yu Yu's often uninteresting conversation style as he began to lecture her on various methods to combat insomnia, such as counting sheep in one's head, consuming milk and bananas, using calculus problems to tire the brain, sleeping away from one's phone, practicing "eye-fighting" to induce brain glitches, and listening to white noise. Overwhelmed by his lengthy explanations, Gu Yejia eventually fell asleep on his shoulder.
Yu Yu patiently waited for her to wake up, enduring the numbness in his arm. When she awoke, she thanked him, saying she hadn't slept so peacefully in a long time. Yu Yu jokingly replied that she should indeed thank him, as half his body had gone numb, to which she retorted that he needed to exercise more.
The motorcycles from Gu Yejia's father and his friends were then sent to a motorcycle museum run by one of their friends, providing them with a dignified "retirement." Yu Yu was now considered the "Sixth Brother" of the Steppenwolf gang, though he found the new title "troublesome." Shen Wu later admired Yu Yu's new Harley, calling it "incredibly cool" and asking to ride it, but Yu Yu firmly refused.
Shen Wu also noted Yu Yu's old Vespa, observing that Yu Yu never rode it and treated it as a decorative collectible. Shen Wu then teased Yu Yu about his bikes having companions while he remained single, even speculating on what the "child" of a Vespa and a Harley would be named, much to Yu Yu's annoyance.
Episode 12 Recap
Gu Yejia savored the authentic oil-pulled noodles Xia Xiaoman prepared, praising her cooking and suggesting she invite Yu Yu to try them. Xia Xiaoman, however, expressed reservations, admitting to "Mr. Yu-phobia" due to his notoriously picky palate, believing her culinary skills wouldn't satisfy him.
Gu Yejia then asked Xia Xiaoman to accompany her to a matchmaking event that weekend, explaining it was a necessary task as part of a deal with her father for two months of peace, though she really didn't want to go. Their conversation was interrupted by loud music coming from Yu Yu's room, which Xia Xiaoman thought sounded like aerobics. The next day, Yu Yu ended up in the hospital.
He explained to Gu Yejia that his entire body was sore because he had done nine intense reps on the ab roller, aiming to get abs. Gu Yejia checked him and confirmed he was merely over-exercised, advising him to rest and not push himself too hard. Seizing the opportunity, she challenged him to join her at the upcoming matchmaking event.
Gu Yejia's father had signed her up, and she wanted to prove her charm, as her father believed no one liked her. She proposed a bet to see who could secure a date by the end of the event. Yu Yu, confident there was nothing he wouldn't dare to do, accepted the bet. At the matchmaking event, Yu Yu arrived looking impeccably dressed, attracting many admiring glances.
Gu Yejia commented on his handsome appearance, noting he seemed to be taking their bet seriously. As men approached the beautiful Gu Yejia, Yu Yu intervened to drive them away, a clear tactic to win their bet. He offered a series of backhanded compliments, calling her dimples her best feature and describing her calm exterior as hiding a "raging storm" within. Annoyed, Gu Yejia told him to stop interfering and mind his own business.
Later, Xia Xiaoman and Gu Yejia observed Yu Yu conversing animatedly with a young, pretty woman. Xia Xiaoman worried Yu Yu might be "picked up," but Gu Yejia dismissed the idea, asserting that no one could possibly be interested in the "poison-immune" Mr. Yu. However, upon seeing him laughing with the woman, Gu Yejia's expression briefly froze, though she didn't notice her own reaction.
They assumed the woman was a staff member whom Yu Yu was talking to out of desperation to win the bet. The woman Yu Yu was talking to was Fei Wenli, a photographer who recognized him as the "talented but quirky designer" she had seen in home decor magazines. She connected with Yu Yu over his design philosophy, which centered on the kitchen and the "warmth of cooking" or "wok hei," and their shared love for "braised pork belly."
They also discussed photography, with Fei Wenli expressing her preference for capturing "beautiful things" to "spread joy," rather than grim realities, even if it meant taking event photos to "fund her dream." Yu Yu expressed his support, stating that a "kind designer creates happiness." Before parting, Fei Wenli discreetly had a colleague capture some candid shots of Yu Yu. She then drove him back to his company, leading to office gossip about him being dropped off by a "beauty."
Yu Yu, however, downplayed the encounter to his colleagues. While Yu Yu was out walking, he ran into Dao and Xia Xiaoman. Xia Xiaoman, eager for details, pressed him about the woman from the matchmaking event. Yu Yu again downplayed it, stating they just ate, walked, and took photos, emphasizing that he didn't even get her contact details, so things were "not really okay." Just then, Fei Wenli arrived at Yu Yu's apartment building.
She explained that as staff, she had access to his information and had come to give him the photos from their earlier encounter. She introduced herself to Xia Xiaoman, giving her a business card. Fei Wenli then invited Yu Yu to her studio the next day, knowing his enthusiasm for traditional photography. Yu Yu expressed excitement, noting that the anticipation of developing film was incomparable to digital photography.
Xia Xiaoman later discussed Fei Wenli with Gu Yejia, praising her as a beautiful and charming woman. Gu Yejia felt a subtle discomfort but dismissed it. Soon after, Yu Yu called Gu Yejia, asking her to help him choose an outfit for his meeting with Fei Wenli. Gu Yejia, feeling their relationship was becoming inappropriately ambiguous given his new romantic interest, promptly hung up.
Nevertheless, Yu Yu appeared at the hospital, asking Gu Yejia to pose for him so he could "test his camera." She reluctantly agreed, enduring his comment that her "big face" was "easy to focus on." Yu Yu subsequently visited Fei Wenli's studio to develop an old roll of film he had shot with a Seagull 4A camera.
As Fei Wenli processed the film, she noticed photos of Gu Yejia and commented on them, acknowledging that she was Yu Yu's doctor and complimenting the shots. Meanwhile, Xia Xiaoman, observing the affectionate interactions between Shen Wu and Wang Xiaoxiao, expressed her longing for a romantic relationship of her own. Later, Fei Wenli was taking portraits of Yu Yu at his studio. Shen Wu and Wang Xiaoxiao dropped by, curious to meet Fei Wenli.
Shen Wu jokingly thanked her for "rescuing Mr. Yu from the matchmaking event" and saving "thousands of girls from his poisonous tongue." Lin Sa also arrived and informed Yu Yu that a client, impressed by his design, had increased their budget by half a million. Yu Yu declared he wouldn't change his design, prompting Lin Sa to ask Fei Wenli to "capture this moment of stubborn Mr. Yu" for her office desk.
Despite initial complaints from Lin Sa, Shen Wu, and Wang Xiaoxiao about Yu Yu sending them away for his photoshoot, everyone ultimately joined in for a group photo, which Fei Wenli captured.
Episode 13 Recap
Yu Yu intended to take some solo photos, but was secretly pleased when his colleagues at the studio swarmed him for a group picture. Feigning annoyance at the disruption, he left with Fei Wenli. They found a picturesque spot by the river where Fei Wenli suggested he pose, but Yu Yu, having lost interest in his own shoot, offered to photograph her instead, capturing many beautiful moments. Unbeknownst to them, Shen Wu and Wang Xiaoxiao observed this from a distance.
Wang Xiaoxiao, impressed by Fei Wenli's talent and striking looks, remarked that she seemed a very suitable match for Yu Yu. She then instructed Shen Wu to select a few photos and send them to Gu Yejia, eager to see her reaction. Meanwhile, Gu Yejia was discussing Fei Wenli with Xia Xiaoman. Xia Xiaoman expressed concern that Yu Yu might be swept away by the proactive and cunning Fei Wenli, warning that men can't resist such charm.
Gu Yejia, though feigning indifference, became noticeably distracted during their meal. Soon after, news of Yu Yu photographing Fei Wenli spread rapidly through their group chat, even sparking jokes about preparing "red envelopes" for a wedding. Gu Yejia's anger simmered as she saw Yu Yu's casual message in the chat, stating he was "quite relaxed in the studio." Around the same time, Mr. Ximen invited Gu Yejia to a traditional Chinese art exhibition.
Despite admitting she didn't "really understand art," Gu Yejia politely accepted. Her visit with Mr. Ximen involved numerous cups of tea and demonstrations of traditional tea-pouring techniques, which she found tiresome, causing her to leave abruptly. Concurrently, Lin Sa received a tempting high-salary offer from a headhunting firm in Beijing, leaving her conflicted. Her concern grew when she discovered Yu Yu had mysteriously disappeared for ten days and authorized a 200,000 yuan contingency fund—an unprecedented action for him.
Worried he might be in trouble, she contacted Gu Yejia, who also had no information about his whereabouts, leading them to speculate about potential kidnapping or scams. Lin Sa then called Sun, a contractor, who complained that Yu Yu had been "harassing" him to drop his current work and join him at a distant site. This call revealed Yu Yu’s location, prompting Lin Sa and the team to immediately head there.
Upon their arrival, they were stunned to find Fei Wenli's new home meticulously designed with special accommodations, including handrails, cushioned floors, and lowered furniture, all tailored to her condition. Fei Wenli, deeply moved, thanked Yu Yu, saying she was "very satisfied" with the new home. She revealed that she was suffering from a severe condition affecting her motor cortex, leaving her unable to stand and requiring immediate surgery.
Yu Yu reassured her, telling her not to be afraid of the surgery and promising that she would "definitely" be able to stand again. Yu Yu later met with Gu Yejia to explain his recent absence. He revealed that he had promised Fei Wenli a photo shoot in exchange for designing her house, making the 200,000 yuan an "advance for the renovation" rather than a personal loan.
He confessed that he had kept Fei Wenli's illness a secret because he sympathized with her but also knew that strong individuals "often see sympathy as an insult." He admitted he wanted to tell Gu Yejia because he feared she might "misunderstand" and "get angry." Gu Yejia dismissed his lengthy explanation, denying any misunderstanding.
Yu Yu then warned her against Mr. Ximen, calling him "childish and narcissistic" based on his unimpressive teapot tricks, playfully suggesting that she was looking for a husband, not a "cute" son who would make her "wash teapots" all day. Gu Yejia accused Yu Yu of being "jealous," which he vehemently denied, jokingly referring to himself as her "sixth uncle" protecting his "eldest niece."
He then showed her photos he had personally taken and developed of her, complimenting them while teasing her that her "big face" was "easy to focus on." Gu Yejia, despite her playful annoyance, admitted that Mr. Ximen "really isn't right for me" and confiscated the photos. A comical incident unfolded when Dao, Yu Yu's dog, stole one of his socks. Yu Yu, after sniffing the sock, contracted a "fungal upper respiratory infection" and was hospitalized.
Gu Yejia and Shen Wu relentlessly teased him for his sloppy habits and delicate constitution, with Gu Yejia calling him an "embroidered pillow" and lamenting that her wish for him to be silent had come true. Unable to speak, Yu Yu tried to communicate about a design revision. Gu Yejia somehow understood his muffled sounds and explained to the team that Yu Yu needed to change the design.
Lacking inspiration himself, Shen Wu offered to take over the project, recalling that Yu Yu would often seek clarity from Gu Yejia when he was stuck. Gu Yejia later showed Shen Wu the photos Yu Yu took of her, confirming his teasing remarks about her face. Shen Wu, whose recent designs had been well-received, felt a growing ambition to establish his own studio. Meanwhile, Lin Sa continued to deliberate on the headhunter's offer.
She discussed it with Wang Xiaoxiao, asking if she would move to Beijing for a Fortune 500 company with a tripled salary. Wang Xiaoxiao firmly declined, citing her commitment to Shen Wu in Shanghai and her desire to continue working with Lin Sa. Influenced by Wang Xiaoxiao's loyalty, Lin Sa ultimately rejected the high-paying offer, choosing to stay.
Wang Xiaoxiao was overjoyed, stating that Shen Wu wouldn't have to work late anymore and that she would cook him a special meal to celebrate. Upon Yu Yu's return to the studio, he confronted Shen Wu about using AI in his design. While acknowledging AI's efficiency, Yu Yu stressed that it was "soulless," merely "a tool, not a cheat."
He asserted that "art's soul lies in originality" and challenged Shen Wu to develop "images in your head" before relying on AI. Shen Wu apologized, agreeing that a designer "should have my own ideas, my own style," and promised to redo the design manually. Yu Yu clarified that his emphasis on "style" referred to one's "attitude towards work and career."
As a reward for his completed project, Yu Yu gave Shen Wu the entire design fee in cash, minus a 5,000 yuan deduction for using AI, sternly warning him, "Next time you use it, I'll fire you." Shen Wu excitedly presented the large sum of cash to Wang Xiaoxiao, who playfully asked if it was a proposal. He denied it, explaining he bought her a ring she had admired.
Wang Xiaoxiao jokingly called the money a "betrothal gift" and him "stingy." Shen Wu saw the money as a validation of his "value as a man" and his ability to "overcome that hurdle." Approaching thirty and still Yu Yu's assistant, he felt a strong desire to "stand firm" on his own. He declared his decision to "go solo" and "start my own studio" to Wang Xiaoxiao, who reacted with enthusiasm.
Later, a headhunter attempted to poach Yu Yu, praising him as a "somewhat famous designer" and implying Lin Sa's happiness if he moved. Yu Yu corrected the recruiter, emphasizing that Lin Sa was his "most capable partner and manager," not his superior. The headhunter then tried to leverage Lin Sa's potential departure as Yu Yu's "biggest loss." Offended by being treated as a "sidekick, a freebie," Yu Yu firmly rejected the offer, stating that he didn't care about the generous terms.
Episode 14 Recap
Shen Wu presented his latest design draft to Yu Yu, pleased that the client was satisfied enough for him to replace an earlier AI-generated version. Yu Yu acknowledged it was a significant milestone for Shen Wu, despite still featuring "little floral patterns," and allowed him a moment of pride. Shen Wu then revealed his intention to work independently, catching Yu Yu off guard.
Yu Yu initially assumed Shen Wu was announcing his marriage and expressed sympathy, but upon learning of Shen Wu's plan to leave the studio, he became agitated. Yu Yu vehemently disagreed with the decision, pointing out numerous flaws in Shen Wu's design and questioning his design concept, arguing that Shen Wu was not ready to venture out on his own and it would be "a dead end."
Shen Wu defended his basic design skills, stating that his aesthetic simply differed from Yu Yu's and reminding Yu Yu that he himself had started without a clear design concept. Shen Wu pressed Yu Yu to define when he "would" be ready, questioning if his only future was "this desk."
Feeling overwhelmed by the news, Yu Yu sought out Gu Yejia, lamenting that Lin Sa was also planning to change jobs and that his assistant, Shen Wu, intended to go solo. Yu Yu described feeling as though everyone was abandoning him. He dismissed his feelings as mere inconvenience, claiming their departures would disrupt his work efficiency. Gu Yejia advised him to respect others' choices and consider their perspectives, rather than focusing solely on himself.
Annoyed, Yu Yu accused Gu Yejia of siding with Lin Sa. The conversation shifted to their respective studies, with Yu Yu showing off a book on surgery and Gu Yejia one on architectural design, playfully challenging each other. Meanwhile, Shen Wu’s girlfriend, Wang Xiaoxiao, complained about his constant gaming, expressing concern that if Lin Sa left, she might lose her job as Lin Sa’s assistant.
Shen Wu was surprised to learn of Lin Sa’s potential departure, lamenting that he wouldn't have considered going independent if he had known, feeling it would add insult to injury for Mr. Yu. An argument ensued, with Wang Xiaoxiao accusing Shen Wu of prioritizing Yu Yu. Later, Wang Xiaoxiao showed Shen Wu negative online comments about Yu Yu’s studio and designs, calling them "pure garbage."
Incensed by the insults against his mentor, Shen Wu confronted Ou Yang, the person responsible for the comments, resulting in a physical altercation that Shen Wu lost. Yu Yu was called to the police station to bail Shen Wu out, frustrated by yet another one of Shen Wu's troubles. Shen Wu explained that he couldn't stand by while Ou Yang insulted Yu Yu, who had taught him for "five whole years," meticulously explaining every detail.
Shen Wu emphasized that without Mr. Yu, he wouldn't be where he was today, asserting his mentor's importance. Yu Yu reprimanded Shen Wu for resorting to violence, warning him it would jeopardize his independent career plans. Softened by Yu Yu’s concern, Shen Wu temporarily recanted his decision to go independent, claiming he would stay to take care of Yu Yu, who promptly told him to take care of himself.
Reflecting on Shen Wu's loyalty and his own stagnation, Yu Yu began to understand Shen Wu's ambition to seek new opportunities. A television reporter invited Yu Yu for an interview. Taking it seriously, Yu Yu asked Gu Yejia to help him select an outfit. He oddly set up a table outside his home for their consultation, much to Gu Yejia's amusement.
After trying on several options, which Gu Yejia found either "boring," "too much like everyday office wear," or "too casual," they settled on a combination. As Gu Yejia helped him with his tie, Yu Yu boasted about his "talents," to which Gu Yejia advised him to "watch his words carefully" during the interview, noting he was "impressive when silent."
Yu Yu confidently assured her his "wording this time will be perfect," while also jokingly claiming his "surgery skills" were now "mastered." At home, Shen Wu apologized to Wang Xiaoxiao, sitting on a durian to show his remorse, listing his many faults and promising to always agree with her. Wang Xiaoxiao, still annoyed about Yu Yu not appreciating Shen Wu, initially refused to watch Yu Yu’s TV interview. However, Shen Wu persuaded her.
During the interview, Yu Yu eloquently spoke about his design philosophy. He then surprised Shen Wu by showing a video of Shen Wu's initial job interview, where a 25-year-old Shen Wu declared his dream of becoming a designer like Yu Yu, creating warm homes under his guidance. Yu Yu praised Shen Wu’s meticulous work and dedication, exaggerating that he "often stayed late."
Yu Yu then announced that Shen Wu had "gone solo" and was now an "independent designer," subtly promoting him by suggesting that viewers who disliked his own work should seek out Shen Wu, describing him as having a "better temper" and being "easier to compromise." Watching this, Shen Wu was deeply moved, realizing he had "misunderstood" Yu Yu, who had consistently supported him.
On Shen Wu's last day at the studio, he emotionally bid farewell to Yu Yu, promising to care for himself and return if his independent venture failed. Yu Yu remained silent, feigning indifference, though he was visibly pained and reluctant to let him go. Later, Lin Sa, suffering from a cold, visited Gu Yejia. She confessed her hesitation about leaving, acknowledging that the three of them—herself, Yu Yu, and Shen Wu—had formed a "very stable structure."
She worried that if she and Shen Wu both left, Yu Yu would "collapse" and might not "get up" if he fell too hard. Gu Yejia encouraged her to "lay a mat" and "give him some support" so he wouldn't be hurt so badly. Lin Sa agreed to finalize her existing work before making her departure. In an unexpected turn, Shen Wu was assigned back to Yu Yu's studio as a "newly signed designer" by Lin Sa.
Yu Yu, still disgruntled and suffering from a back injury, sarcastically questioned Shen Wu's quick return, but eventually conceded that sharing utility bills was "practical." Shen Wu promised not to be in arrears and even offered to take on overflow projects from Yu Yu's studio. He excitedly declared his new design style would be "English country style" with "little floral patterns," provoking Yu Yu's annoyance.
Shen Wu asserted they were "equal in status," but Yu Yu called him naive, to which Shen Wu retorted that "naivety is my advantage." Yu Yu also presented Shen Wu with a calligraphic sign for "Shen Wu Design Studio," which Shen Wu enthusiastically received, despite Yu Yu's usual dismissive remarks.
A client arrived, upset about Lin Sa's unexpected departure, particularly because Lin Sa had promised to mediate a dispute between her and her husband about converting a room into a "dough modeling studio" or a "study to write novels." Yu Yu's rude dismissal of "dough dolls" as having "no soul" offended the client, who left, expressing her distrust in their studio.
Shen Wu expressed frustration over losing the client and blamed Lin Sa's "irresponsible" behavior for abandoning her duties before officially leaving. He then clarified that Lin Sa was at her birthday banquet and invited Yu Yu, who refused, lecturing Shen Wu not to mix "work emotions" with his personal life. Yu Yu then sarcastically challenged Shen Wu, asking if their new "equal status" gave him the right to lecture him.
At Lin Sa's birthday party, Shen Wu and Wang Xiaoxiao arrived. Yu Yu unexpectedly appeared, giving Lin Sa a perplexing gift: a piece of bismuth, a rare element with an incredibly long half-life, which he explained would last "even if humanity dies out." Lin Sa interpreted it as a wish for "longevity." She then announced her definitive decision to sign a contract and move to Beijing the following evening. Subsequently, Shen Wu established "Shen Wu Design Studio."
His first client was, to Yu Yu's chagrin, the very same client Yu Yu had driven away earlier. Feeling unwell and annoyed, Yu Yu visited Gu Yejia, complaining that Wang Xiaoxiao and Shen Wu might have "poisoned his food" to "take over his studio," and blamed Gu Yejia for advising him to be less selfish. Gu Yejia, finding Yu Yu's complaints unhelpful, reiterated her advice about understanding others' choices and not hurting his own heart.
At a meeting, another coworker confronted Yu Yu about keeping a dog in the office given Lin Sa's allergy. This coworker then announced her own resignation, expressing her desire to open her own studio and surprisingly asking Lin Sa to be her business partner. Later, Wang Xiaoxiao was promoted to assistant. Yu Yu, still processing Lin Sa's firm decision to leave, finally called Wang Xiaoxiao, urgently asking about the details of Lin Sa's new contract.
Episode 15 Recap
Yu Yu, feeling like a lonely old man, couldn't help but worry about Lin Sa. He tracked her down, attempting to persuade his colleague to stay at the company. Yu Yu awkwardly suggested that Lin Sa's past achievements were due to his designs, implying she would lose her value if she left him.
Annoyed, Lin Sa listened as Yu Yu softened his tone, admitting he couldn't manage without her either, as he struggled to handle many of the difficult clients they had encountered over the years. Unaccustomed to his compliments, Lin Sa told him she would reconsider before leaving. In the days that followed, Yu Yu's work attitude was noticeably downcast as he anxiously awaited her decision.
Lin Sa finally returned, not only to the company but also having successfully negotiated a promotion for herself, becoming the Director of Design Operations. She even insisted Yu Yu address her as "Director Lin." When Lin Sa announced that Wang Xiaoxiao would take over her former position, Yu Yu sarcastically remarked that he would now be leading two "weak soldiers."
Lin Sa responded that everyone else was progressing and urged Yu Yu to catch up, or he would be left behind. Xia Xiaoman, hearing that Lin Sa had returned and received a promotion, felt envious of her success as a strong career woman. Her friend, however, advised her to stop daydreaming and instead focus on finding a reliable boyfriend to marry. Later, Wang Dawei, Xia Xiaoman's ex-boyfriend, called to ask her out.
When Xia Xiaoman met him, she felt an eerie atmosphere, as if someone was following her. Angered by her rejection, Wang Dawei began to stalk her, attempting to force her into a reconciliation. Xia Xiaoman fought back, and just as things escalated, Yu Yu arrived to rescue her. However, Wang Dawei called the police, leading to Yu Yu's arrest. Lin Sa later bailed him out from the police station.
After the incident, Xia Xiaoman realized that Yu Yu, despite his prideful nature, had consistently helped her. She recalled numerous times he came to her aid: climbing a high balcony to help her when she was drunk, taking her to the hospital for appendicitis, caring for her dog Dao even though he disliked animals, scolding her uncle when she couldn't pay her property fees, and humbling himself to ask for help selling her car.
She acknowledged how difficult it was for him to apologize, yet he had endured much for her. Xia Xiaoman found herself feeling secure with Yu Yu and realized she was falling in love with him. While out drinking with friends, she expressed her feelings but admitted she was afraid to confess to Yu Yu, fearing he would "scold her to death."
Later, as Yu Yu was preparing to eat at home, he was interrupted first by a milk delivery person, then by a drunken Xia Xiaoman. Put off by her intoxicated state, Yu Yu told her to keep her distance and even held her dog, Dao, as a shield. Xia Xiaoman confessed her feelings for him, but Yu Yu, distracted by playing with the dog, didn't seem to register what she was saying. She eventually went home and vomited.
The next morning, Xia Xiaoman pondered Yu Yu's response, "If you like, then like." She wondered what it meant, but her friends suggested it simply meant he wasn't interested and only wanted to be friends. Her friend then proposed that Xia Xiaoman attend a month-long company training in Beijing to get away and clear her head.
Meanwhile, Yu Yu's brother-in-law, Zhong Liangchuan, asked him to speak to his wife on his behalf, but Yu Yu jokingly advised him to get a divorce. Yu Yu also found his sister's constant pressure to marry annoying. Lin Sa then arrived, informing Yu Yu that he had been nominated for the Annual Best Designer award and presenting him with an invitation. Yu Yu feigned indifference in front of his colleagues but later proudly displayed the invitation to Gu Yejia.
He wanted to invite her as his companion, but when Gu Yejia jokingly suggested he should "beg" her, Yu Yu stormed out. Gu Yejia thought he was just being temperamental, but when she opened the door, she found him standing there, formally inviting her with a serious expression. At the awards ceremony, Gu Yejia, looking elegant, accompanied Yu Yu, and many observed them as a well-matched pair. When the host called his name, Yu Yu stood up.
To Gu Yejia's surprise, Yu Yu briefly hugged her before going on stage to accept his award for Annual Best Designer. He hugged her again after returning. Yu Yu proudly brought the award back to the company to show it off. At home, he intentionally turned the TV to the news channel broadcasting the ceremony, hoping his family would see. His elderly mother became overly excited and fainted.
Yu Yu rushed her to the hospital, where he realized his mother's profound worry about him remaining unmarried, a concern he had overlooked for many years. Later, Yu Yu thanked Gu Yejia for her help. Gu Yejia pointed out his tendency to lash out fiercely at those he cared about, advising him that it wasn't a good habit and he might regret it if he drove someone away.
Yu Yu then asked Gu Yejia to "like" his social media post about the award. Noticing his frustration when she canceled her like, Gu Yejia teased him, suggesting he only had a few friends. Yu Yu quickly denied it, claiming some friends just hadn't added him on WeChat yet.
Episode 16 (Ending) Recap
Following his recent award, Yu Yu's design studio saw an influx of orders and invitations, a fact Lin Sa shared with Shen Wu, who regretted not moving to Beijing. Yu Yu soon arrived, agitated that no one had liked his latest post on Moments. Lin Sa directly stated she had blocked him because he rarely posted, making her question the point of seeing his occasional updates.
Yu Yu complained about being blocked right when he finally posted, while Shen Wu tried to interject, reminding Yu Yu about outstanding utility bills and threatening to post about him online. Amidst the commotion, Lin Sa announced that Xia Xiaoman was going to Beijing for an internship and planned a farewell party, asking Yu Yu to join. Though Yu Yu initially declined, Lin Sa sent him the address anyway. Lin Sa then muttered about Xia Xiaoman being "unbelievable" and "clueless."
At Xia Xiaoman's farewell party, friends expressed how much they would miss her. One friend mentioned the possibility of Xia Xiaoman becoming a store manager in another city if her training went well, prompting another to playfully wish for an average performance so she would return. Xia Xiaoman, however, declared her ambition.
When Yu Yu unexpectedly arrived, bearing a bowl of noodles he prepared according to the tradition of "dumplings are to welcome, and noodles are to send someone off," Xia Xiaoman was touched. As her friend offered her garlic for the noodles, Yu Yu quipped about the bad breath it would cause, potentially affecting their dog, Dao. Xia Xiaoman's friend chided Yu Yu to say something nice instead.
Yu Yu then told Xia Xiaoman that if she got too busy in Beijing to care for Dao, he would gladly take him. Xia Xiaoman acknowledged his concern but pressed him if he had anything else to say, to which he simply replied, "No." Secretly, Xia Xiaoman called her friend Qing Qing, reaffirming her intention to confess to Yu Yu again, feeling there might have been a misunderstanding during her previous messy attempt.
Her friend reminded her that Gu Yejia had attended the awards with Yu Yu and they had even hugged, questioning if Xia Xiaoman needed to learn the hard way. As Xia Xiaoman was about to confess to Yu Yu, Gu Yejia arrived, bringing a gift for Xia Xiaoman and joking with Yu Yu about being late. Yu Yu and Gu Yejia immediately fell into their usual playful banter, irritating Xia Xiaoman, who excused herself and retreated to a room.
Gu Yejia followed, asking Xia Xiaoman what was wrong. Through the closed door, Xia Xiaoman tearfully confessed her feelings for Yu Yu, but stated, "He likes you." She then directly asked Gu Yejia if she liked Yu Yu. Gu Yejia, however, offered no reply and left the room. Later, Xia Xiaoman said her final goodbyes to Yu Yu, asking him to ensure Dao drank enough water in the dry northern climate.
As she drove away, Yu Yu ran after her car, giving her a small doll for Dao. Xia Xiaoman thanked him, knowing Dao would love it. In the car, Xia Xiaoman was lost in thought, recalling Yu Yu's earlier offer to care for Dao if she couldn't.
Meanwhile, Yu Yu was approached by a younger designer, Ou Yang, who expressed immense admiration for him as the "Designer of the Year," asking for a photo, which he planned to display at home. Ou Yang, whose full name was Ouyang Pingfan (meaning "ordinary"), preferred to go by Ou Yang as he didn't feel ordinary, though he admitted he was in comparison to Yu Yu's design genius.
Ou Yang explained that he only understood Yu Yu's designs after witnessing him and "his wife"—mistaking Gu Yejia for Yu Yu's spouse—at the awards ceremony. He believed Yu Yu shared his happiness through his work, noting that all of Yu Yu's "cooking zones" were meticulously designed for two people. Ou Yang continued to express his envy of Yu Yu's "infuriating sweetness" and "jealousy-inducing happiness," describing how sharing daily life and embracing a partner after work was "wonderful."
Reflecting on Xia Xiaoman's words, Gu Yejia was prompted to reconsider her feelings for Yu Yu. Xia Xiaoman had told her she wanted to confess but couldn't because seeing Yu Yu and Gu Yejia bicker like an old married couple made her feel awkward. Xia Xiaoman admitted to envying their "vibe and chemistry." She further explained that Yu Yu's gaze towards Gu Yejia was honest, and Gu Yejia's own admission of her feelings for him was equally honest.
Xia Xiaoman then openly confessed her own feelings for Yu Yu but declared, "I can't like someone who has someone else in his heart." She pointed out that Yu Yu's demeanor completely changed from sad with her to being "lit right up" once Gu Yejia arrived, leading Xia Xiaoman to conclude that what Yu Yu and Gu Yejia shared was a "ripened love." Inspired by this realization, Gu Yejia invited Yu Yu to a BBQ restaurant.
There, Gu Yejia initially ordered only vegetables, citing her "three highs," but Yu Yu persuaded her to add some meat. She then ordered a variety of meats and draft beer. When Yu Yu asked why she had suddenly invited him out, Gu Yejia mentioned the restaurant's "special" and "interesting" beef tongue.
The waiter explained that due to high demand, the beef tongue was now a "challenge item" that required couples to share a "kiss of love" to receive it, with a French kiss earning an extra plate. Yu Yu was taken aback, but Gu Yejia pressed him. He reluctantly agreed to try if she insisted, and Gu Yejia excitedly prepared for the kiss. However, when Gu Yejia told him to start, Yu Yu excused himself to the restroom and never returned.
Gu Yejia waited until closing, but Yu Yu was nowhere to be found. Back home, Gu Yejia lay in bed, lost in thought, remembering a past argument where Yu Yu had angrily told her to leave his house. She refused, stating she was responsible for her patient, and he retorted that she shouldn't forget her own medicine. Yu Yu, meanwhile, visited Gu Yejia's clinic, only to learn she had taken leave, which prompted him to reflect on his actions.
Later, Yu Yu asked Gu Yejia to come to his place for another BBQ. When she arrived, she found him grilling in the hallway. He quickly stopped her from leaving, explaining that he had put the grill outside to prevent the smell from entering the house. Apologizing, Yu Yu admitted he had "messed it up" at the restaurant.
He confessed that as he got closer to her for the kiss, "images flooded into my head," and he feared that if they entered a relationship, it wouldn't last. He admitted his inadequacy in such matters and his fear of "messing up so many things." Gu Yejia challenged his reasoning, calling it "ignorant" and "scared." She asserted that he was abandoning a potential beginning based on a self-created ending.
Love, she argued, was not a solo endeavor; if they dated, she would be his "partner," not just Dr. Gu or a friend, and they would face and resolve all difficulties together. She asked him if he would be willing to do that, and Yu Yu softly replied, "I will." Understanding, Yu Yu then asked her to step inside his house to get some soy sauce. Inside, Gu Yejia was struck by the unique design and numerous green plants.
Yu Yu then revealed a model of the house, which unusually contained her photograph. He explained that as a child, after his mud animals were washed away by rain, his father suggested building them a home, inspiring him to become an architect. This "secret garden," his current home, was built as a shelter.
He then revealed the house model was a personal challenge, as he aimed to renovate it from a single-person dwelling into a home for two, considering her tastes and habits, a task he found incredibly difficult. He confessed that he had been building walls, opening windows, making doors, and preparing the interior of his life for her, but had gotten stuck, fearing he might never finish the design or that she would never "walk through that door."
This fear, he admitted, was why he had fled the BBQ restaurant. However, her recent words had made him realize it wasn't a journey he had to face alone. He then asked, "So, would you like to decorate this house with me? And when it's all done, would you move in?" Gu Yejia simply replied, "I'm hungry." Yu Yu asked if she wanted beef tongue, and when she playfully asked if it required a task, he said yes. He then told her to close her eyes, and as she questioned what he was doing, he leaned in to kiss her.
