Xie Xinxu confesses to Wu Nongyu that she is the only person who has ever made him feel alive. To him, the world was once a silent, stagnant wasteland—so devoid of meaning that he harbored a desire to destroy it all. To cope with the boredom, he began a "game" of imitation, playing the role of a popular and helpful "normal person" in society. However, the game lacked any real challenge, and he soon found himself weary of the act.

Everything changed the day he met Wu Nongyu. He describes the encounter as a mental explosion, and to his surprise, the intensity of that feeling never diminished over time. Driven by an obsession to possess her, he orchestrated a chance meeting in the heavy rain. At the time, Wu Nongyu seemed terrified of him and stumbled into the arms of her brother, Wu Siyuan.

While Wu Siyuan teased her for being so frightened by a simple blind date, he asked her to describe her ideal man. Wu Nongyu listed a specific set of traits: tall, handsome, an orphan to avoid family drama, and someone who would treat her career as his own. She even jokingly added that he should be difficult, bad-tempered, and "toxic."

Overhearing this, Xie Xinxu suppressed his own nature and meticulously crafted the identity of Gu Yanqing to match her description, eventually personally recruiting her into Genus. In the present, Xie Xinxu’s composure begins to fail. He admits that suppressing the urge to possess her has been the hardest part of his plan. He also reveals that the "inhibitors" he previously used were actually just supplements intended to give her a false sense of security.

Now genuinely losing his grip on his sanity, he warns her that a "Ren" who loses control is terrifying and could kill everyone in the institute. He desperately asks her to form a binding pact with him. Though Wu Nongyu initially flees in fear, she eventually returns with a real inhibitor. Too shaken to administer the injection herself, she watches as Xie Xinxu takes her trembling hand and helps her plunge the needle into his neck.

As the medicine takes effect, Xie Xinxu pulls Wu Nongyu into a tight embrace, confessing that even the drug is not as comforting as her scent. He promises that if they stay together, he will ensure everyone else escapes safely. Prioritizing the lives of her colleagues, Wu Nongyu does not pull away.

When they return to the elevator area, they realize the power has been restored, sparking a fear that the Ren may have already used the lift to reach the upper floors. Meanwhile, Director Ding narrowly avoids a group of Ren by hiding behind a door. He finds two young interns and urges them to evacuate. Since the next day is a public holiday, the institute is mostly empty, but Chen Yiyi and Fang Sheng remain in danger downstairs.

Wu Nongyu manages to reach Chen Yiyi’s room just in time, helping her friend scramble out of the window moments before the Ren burst through the door with orders to kill every human they find. Once the survivors reunite, Wu Nongyu examines the floor plans for Block B and proposes a daring escape. She suggests linking the arms of two construction cranes to create a bridge to the opposite building, where they can reach a transit hub.

Director Ding admits that before he became a researcher, he had watched his father operate such machinery. Despite his aching back, he takes control of the crane to bridge the gap. As the others begin to cross, Xie Xinxu stays behind to protect Wu Nongyu, fighting off the encroaching Ren. However, just as he prepares to jump across to join her, he is struck by the moving crane arm operated by Director Ding and knocked off the makeshift bridge.
