Qiao Yan sent a message to Gu Jingyuan, stating that if he had not come to a clear decision by Grandpa Gu’s birthday, they should seriously reconsider their relationship. That night, Gu Jingyuan had a nightmare. He dreamed that on his father’s birthday, he revealed his true identity. In the dream, Qiao Yan declared her desire to separate from him, explaining she could not marry the son of a murderer.
In the dream, Qiao Yan and Grandpa Gu were preparing for his birthday, with Qiao Yan enthusiastically decorating the house and reassuring Grandpa Gu it was their first birthday celebration since her marriage. Just as Gu Jingyuan’s dream-father arrived, Gu Jingyuan confessed, "I’m Qin Mian’s son." Qiao Yan reacted with shock, refusing to marry a murderer's son and demanding a divorce, severing all ties with the Gu family.
Gu Jingyuan called out for her and his father in distress, but Qiao Yan’s dream-figure remained resolute. Earlier that day, Grandpa Gu entrusted Uncle Xu with an investigation. Uncle Xu discovered that Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan's recent argument might be linked to Qin Ziyu, who seemed to harbor feelings for Qiao Yan. Having learned this, Gu Changfeng arranged to meet Qin Ziyu at the cemetery where Qiao Yan's parents were buried.
When Qin Ziyu arrived, he expressed remorse for his father’s past actions and offered to do anything for Gu Changfeng and Qiao Yan. Gu Changfeng challenged him to swear, before Qiao Yan's parents, to stay away from her. Qin Ziyu admitted his affection for Qiao Yan but Gu Changfeng firmly reminded him that Qiao Yan was married and loved Gu Jingyuan.
He drew a parallel to Qin Ziyu's father, Qin Mian, whose stubbornness led to tragedy, and warned Qin Ziyu not to repeat history. Gu Changfeng then threatened that if Qin Ziyu wished to protect the Qin corporation, he must distance himself from Qiao Yan, otherwise he would not hesitate to go after the Qin family, including Qin Mian in prison, to protect his children.
Qin Ziyu retaliated by questioning why Gu Changfeng protected Gu Jingyuan, whom he called a "bastard," and disrespectfully mentioned Gu Jingyuan’s mother. Gu Changfeng fiercely defended Gu Jingyuan, reminding Qin Ziyu that the Qin family owed the Gu family two lives, and warned him to know his place and not desire what was not his. As Gu Changfeng drove away, Qin Ziyu deliberately rear-ended his car.
Qin Ziyu then confronted the elderly man, telling him that Gu Jingyuan’s biological father was the one who owed the Gu family blood debts, suggesting he was Qin Mian, and sarcastically claimed he should call Gu Jingyuan "brother." Gu Changfeng dismissed his claims as nonsense, but Qin Ziyu pressed on, recounting how his father had a child with a dancer, a child Qin Mian never acknowledged, who was then adopted by the Gu family.
Qin Ziyu suggested Gu Changfeng ask Gu Jingyuan for the truth himself, implying that if true, Gu Jingyuan would also share in the blood debt. Gu Changfeng countered that even if Jingyuan were Qin Mian’s son, he would still be a Gu family member, stating that true family is determined by the heart, something Qin Ziyu and Qin Mian would never understand.
Qin Ziyu then escalated his lies, claiming Qin Mian’s past crimes, including the murders of Gu Hai and Qiao Yuling and the theft of Qiao Yan's model, were all orchestrated to pave the way for Gu Jingyuan to inherit the Gu Group. He asserted that Gu Jingyuan was fully aware of these actions and concealed them while manipulating Gu Changfeng into marrying Qiao Yan to him, then asked if Gu Changfeng would still consider Gu Jingyuan family.
The mention of the stolen model visibly shocked Gu Changfeng, who demanded to know how Qin Ziyu knew about it. Gu Changfeng began to suffer a heart attack and dropped his medicine. Despite Gu Changfeng's repeated pleas for his medication, Qin Ziyu callously ignored him, telling the dying man, "You can only blame yourself for adopting Gu Jingyuan," before leaving him to his fate.
During this crisis, Gu Changfeng desperately called out "Yan" and attempted to contact Gu Jingyuan, stating he would tell him everything that night. Meanwhile, Gu Jingyuan and Lu Wanqing arrived at a sanatorium to visit Luo Qian. A guard initially refused them entry, stating Qin Ziyu’s orders, but Lu Wanqing persuaded him to let them in, promising to handle Qin Ziyu.
To their horror, they found Luo Qian on the rooftop, clutching a photo of herself and Qin Mian and calling out for her son. As Lu Wanqing and the staff desperately tried to talk her down, Luo Qian accidentally dropped the photo, lunged for it, and fell. Gu Jingyuan witnessed her fall and rushed to her side, calling her "Mom." Disoriented, Luo Qian asked if he was "Yuan," and Gu Jingyuan confirmed he was, comforting her as she lay injured.
They immediately transported her to the hospital. Later that evening, Qiao Yan and Uncle Xu grew increasingly worried as they couldn't reach Gu Changfeng. Qiao Yan’s calls to Gu Changfeng went unanswered. Uncle Xu suggested they try calling Gu Jingyuan, as he had seen him chatting with Gu Changfeng that morning. Qiao Yan called Gu Jingyuan and received devastating news.
She and Uncle Xu rushed to the hospital, where a nurse informed them that Gu Changfeng had suffered a myocardial infarction and had passed away, having been found at least two hours after his symptoms began. Uncle Xu was heartbroken, lamenting that he had been looking forward to celebrating with Gu Changfeng that night.
Qiao Yan, distraught, cried over Grandpa Gu's body, reminding him that she had decorated the house for his birthday and that they were waiting for him to come home. Heartbroken, Qiao Yan tried to call Gu Jingyuan, but his phone was unreachable. At the hospital, she encountered Gu Jingyuan and Lu Wanqing, who was collecting Luo Qian's test results. Qiao Yan immediately confronted Gu Jingyuan, assuming he had ignored her calls because he was with Lu Wanqing.
Gu Jingyuan attempted to explain, promising to tell her and his father everything once he had handled all matters, but Qiao Yan, overwhelmed with grief and anger, tearfully responded, "It’s too late. It’s too late." At Gu Changfeng's funeral, Qiao Yan completely ignored Gu Jingyuan, deeply hurting him.
Qin Ziyu arrived, insisting he was there to pay his respects, and immediately provoked Gu Jingyuan by announcing, "If you want everyone in Xijiang to know you’re Qin Mian’s son, then go ahead." He further taunted Gu Jingyuan about his loyalty to the Gu family, mocking him for not acknowledging Qin Mian, the father who supposedly sacrificed so much for him. Gu Jingyuan lunged at Qin Ziyu, and Qiao Yan quickly intervened, separating them.
Qin Ziyu then feigned innocence, apologizing to Qiao Yan and offering to leave, to which Qiao Yan said, "Thank you, Qin Ziyu." Shortly after, Lu Wanqing approached Qiao Yan, offering her condolences and support, assuring her she was worried and would be there for her if she needed anything. Qiao Yan then confronted Gu Jingyuan about his behavior, asking him to stop causing trouble and let Grandpa Gu rest in peace.
She then politely but firmly asked Qin Ziyu to leave, which he agreed to do. After the funeral, Qin Ziyu spoke with Lu Wanqing, who questioned his true feelings for Qiao Yan. He admitted that Qiao Yan was a good woman, but his primary motivation was to "take her back" from Gu Jingyuan, believing she was stolen from him. Lu Wanqing scoffed at his "crazy" ambition, to which he retorted, "Same to you."
Qin Ziyu then asked if Lu Wanqing wouldn't pay her respects to Grandpa Gu, and she sarcastically asked if he wanted her to get beaten like him. Lu Wanqing handed Qin Ziyu some documents or items he had requested, explaining she obtained them by pretending to help Gu Jingyuan with Luo Qian, thereby regaining Gu Jingyuan’s trust as a supposed mole against Qin Ziyu. She reminded him of his promise, and Qin Ziyu assured her of their continued cooperation.
Later, Qiao Yan brought Grandpa Gu’s portrait home. Gu Jingyuan bowed three times before the portrait, apologizing to his father. He then approached Qiao Yan, telling her he had something important to say. He explained that he had been avoiding her because he was afraid to face her and feared her hatred once she learned the truth. Qiao Yan, desperate for answers, asked, "What truth?" Gu Jingyuan finally confessed, "I’m Qin Mian’s son."
