Qiao Yan decided to perform at Qin Ziyu's small theater, but despite her efforts to control her emotions, she found it difficult to act as if nothing had happened. Gu Jingyuan had cautioned her earlier not to show any unusual behavior, fearing Qin Mian might harm her. Qin Ziyu was overjoyed by Qiao Yan's agreement to perform and had even designed a poster for her, praising her courage to return to the stage after losing her parents.
Feeling a bit nervous about performing after a long break, Qiao Yan agreed when Qin Ziyu suggested they stop practicing and celebrate his birthday. At a restaurant familiar to Qin Ziyu, the owner, an old acquaintance, was delighted to see him bring a girl for his birthday, jokingly suggesting she was his girlfriend. Qiao Yan quickly clarified she was not. The owner took a polaroid of them, commenting on what a "perfect match" they made.
Qin Ziyu explained that the owner always teased him. Qiao Yan learned that Qin Ziyu's mother used to bring him to this restaurant for his birthdays until she passed away, and that Qin Mian never joined them, always being too busy. Their birthday celebration was interrupted by a group of rich acquaintances who taunted Qiao Yan for associating with "stepsons" and "adopted sons." They mocked Qin Ziyu for being banned from his father's company after returning from abroad.
One of them revealed that Qin Mian was a live-in son-in-law who amassed his fortune through Song Xinyue of the Song family, implying Qin Ziyu was not his biological son. They further insinuated that Qin Mian, referred to as Qin Ziyu's "stepdad," considered Qin Ziyu a "bastard" and was planning to expel him from the family. Enraged, Qin Ziyu punched one of the provocateurs.
When another tried to retaliate, Qiao Yan grabbed the birthday cake and pressed it onto his face. She then declared her identity as Gu Changye's granddaughter and Gu Jingyuan's niece, daring them to touch her. Fearing the powerful Gu family, the group retreated. After they left, Qin Ziyu confided in Qiao Yan that his mother was already pregnant with him before marrying Qin Mian, and his biological father had abandoned them.
His mother, unwilling to abort, eventually married Qin Mian as arranged by her family. Qin Ziyu added that Qin Mian had treated him as his only son, making him feel loved and content. Back home, Qin Ziyu was greeted by Qin Mian, who had prepared a birthday feast, including chicken soup and longevity noodles.
Qin Mian told his son he was getting old and needed Qin Ziyu to take over the company after his concert, stressing that he started the business with Qin Ziyu's mother's inheritance from the Song family. He affectionately called Qin Ziyu his son and implored him to protect everything he passed down. Qin Mian also expressed disappointment that Qin Ziyu hadn't invited him to the concert, especially since the Gu family would be attending.
He warned Qin Ziyu to stay away from Qiao Yan and the Gu family, especially Gu Jingyuan, who was fiercely protective of his "fake niece" and could cause trouble. Qin Ziyu, however, admitted he found Qiao Yan interesting and genuinely liked her. Meanwhile, Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan put their plan into motion.
In the hospital, Feng, Qin Mian's accomplice, managed to escape by knocking out a doctor and changing clothes, a ruse that Qin Mian's surveilling men promptly reported to him. Qin Mian then received a phone call from Feng, who threatened to expose Qin Mian's order to commit murder if he didn't provide money and a fake identity for his escape. Qin Mian, feigning cooperation, agreed to meet Feng backstage at Qin Ziyu's small theater, secretly intending to eliminate him.
However, when Qin Mian arrived, he found Gu Jingyuan, disguised as Feng and using a voice simulator. Gu Jingyuan revealed the deception, explaining that Feng had refused to confess his crimes, but a nurse monitoring Feng had been arrested and confessed to acting under Qin Mian's orders. To force Qin Mian's confession, they had staged the phone call.
Qin Mian, realizing he had been entrapped, initially tried to deny knowing Feng, but Gu Jingyuan played a recording of Qin Mian's earlier conversation with "Feng." Gu Jingyuan then directly accused Qin Mian of never letting go of his hatred for the Gu family, resentful that Gu Hai took away his former lover, Qiao Yuling, and thus ordering Feng to cause a car accident to kill them both.
Qin Mian initially dismissed it as speculation, but when Qin Ziyu arrived and urged him to explain the misunderstanding, Qin Mian finally confessed, "I killed them." The police immediately moved in to arrest him. Gu Jingyuan confronted Qin Mian about killing Gu Hai, who had been estranged from the Gu family for decades. Qin Mian defiantly claimed Gu Hai deserved to die, not only for being a Gu but also for "stealing my Yuling from me."
Qiao Yan furiously interjected, telling Qin Mian he had no right to utter her mother's name, asserting that her parents' love was strong and he was never mentioned in their happy family. Qin Mian insisted he and Yuling were in love, and Gu Hai had taken advantage of a temporary separation.
Gu Jingyuan countered that Qin Mian's "disagreement" with Qiao Yuling was merely a pretext, as he was marrying Song Xinyue for the Song family's fortune, questioning why he would involve innocent people in his selfish choices. Qiao Yan further condemned Qin Mian's "fake" and "dirty" love, calling it an insult to her mother and branding him a "lunatic" for killing the one he claimed to love. She told him to spend the rest of his life atoning.
Qin Ziyu, heartbroken, asked Qin Mian if he had ever truly loved his mother. Qin Mian replied, "I failed her," before turning to Qin Ziyu one last time. He reminded his son to remember his words and to "live well," entrusting the Qin family business entirely to him as the police led him away. Overwhelmed by the revelations, Qiao Yan fell ill. Gu Jingyuan tenderly cared for her, explaining she had caught a cold and developed a fever.
Qiao Yan, distraught and crying, reminisced about her parents' loving care when she was sick as a child, confessing how much she missed them. She then tearfully pleaded with Gu Jingyuan not to hate her for being disobedient, telling him she didn't want to lose him. Gu Jingyuan comforted her, reassuring her that he didn't hate her and would always be there, just as her parents would always be watching over her.
Gu Changye entered, witnessing their close embrace, and in his heart, he questioned their relationship, realizing it was no longer a simple uncle-niece bond. Gu Changye, after checking on Qiao Yan, asked Gu Jingyuan to return home and arranged for Yue to stay with Qiao Yan overnight instead. Gu Jingyuan agreed, instructing Qiao Yan to drink her porridge and take her medicine.
