Director Ding realized too late that he had accidentally pressed the elevator's intercom button, alerting the adversaries on the other end. Realizing they had to act fast, Wu Nongyu retrieved a set of keys from a security guard, and the trio rushed to the elevator. They managed to lock the lift just in time, though the effort left Wu Nongyu gasping for air.

When Gu Yanqing reached out to help her up, it was the exhausted Director Ding who grabbed his hand instead, complaining about his old age. With the elevator out of commission, they had to climb fifty-four floors on foot. Director Ding headed off to warn the others to evacuate, while Gu Yanqing and Wu Nongyu aimed for the satellite signal station to send a message.

Wu Nongyu was daunted by the prospect of the long climb in just thirty minutes, but she insisted on staying with Gu Yanqing to avoid being a burden to the Director. As they climbed, they spotted a newly built transit station nearby, which Wu Nongyu noted could be their eventual escape route. Upon reaching their destination, they found a cabinet that Wu Nongyu hoped contained a password.

However, her attempt to open it caused items to spill out and triggered a power outage. They soon realized the device wasn't a keypad lock but a fax machine, which they used to contact the Special Administration Bureau. When the power tripped, Gu Yanqing went to the stairwell’s electrical room to check the breakers, instructing Wu Nongyu to shout if anything happened.

After the lights flickered back on, Gu Yanqing did not return immediately, and a Ren suddenly emerged, sending a panicked Wu Nongyu running for her life. She luckily collided with Gu Yanqing, who carried her on his back to outrun their pursuers. While clinging to him, Wu Nongyu noticed a specific mark on his neck, intensifying her suspicion that he was actually Xie Xinxu.

Hearing more Rens approaching, Gu Yanqing called Wu Nongyu a handful and locked her on the rooftop to keep her safe while he dealt with the "pests." Fearing she would be trapped if he didn't return, Wu Nongyu attempted to climb down using a rope. The rope proved too short, so she tried to swing to a neighboring platform, nearly falling in the process.

To her annoyance, she discovered that Gu Yanqing had been standing below the whole time, quietly watching her struggle because he didn't want to interrupt her effort. He eventually used his own body to break her fall. He dismissed her suspicions about the mark on his neck, claiming it was just a bruise from when she hit him with the cabinet door earlier. As they moved toward the dormitory area, they encountered another group of Rens.

Gu Yanqing handed Wu Nongyu the keys and told her to head back while he drew them away, claiming he could handle them with his remaining inhibitors. However, Wu Nongyu followed him and witnessed him ruthlessly killing the Rens, confirming his true identity as a Ren himself. The man finally dropped his act, greeting her as Xie Xinxu.

Wu Nongyu was stunned, reminding him that he was supposed to have died from an illness four years ago, but he simply called his survival a secret. With her memories of a previous kidnapping and rescue flooding back, Wu Nongyu realized he had been manipulating her. She finally confronted him, asking if he had staged everything—including the story about toxic mushroom soup—just to trick her into forming a pact.
