Wu Nongyu stopped Xie Xinxu before their kiss could go any further. She clarified that while she had agreed their relationship should be one of equals, she hadn't yet committed to a mutual romance. She suggested that he was welcome to be more open about his unrequited feelings for her, but as for their future, she preferred to let their relationship evolve naturally. Xie Xinxu, though emotional, readily accepted her terms.
When they stepped out of the room, they found Lin Juan waiting. Realizing that Wu Nongyu now knew the truth about the blood transfusions and the fragments, Lin Juan took her aside to apologize for the long-standing deception. He confessed that the information regarding the third fragment had actually come from Xie Xinxu. However, he made it clear that he and Xie Xinxu were far from friends.
He admitted that every time he had to wait outside her door for thirty minutes while Xie Xinxu was inside, he was consumed by jealousy. He had feared that Xie Xinxu might be secretly hugging or kissing her—dark thoughts that stemmed from his own suppressed feelings for her over the past two years. Wu Nongyu apologized to Lin Juan for inadvertently taking advantage of his affection, but she was firm about her boundaries.
She told him that she wasn't ready to fall for anyone else right now. Lin Juan was stung by the suddenness of her rejection, but he chose to accept their reality as friends rather than clinging to a hopeless wish. He jokingly told her that she had been demoted from his third-best friend to his fourth-best.
Before letting her go, he urged her to choose someone truly great, insisting that if she ever chose Xie Xinxu, it should only be after Xie Xinxu became as outstanding as Lin Juan himself. After Wu Nongyu left, Lin Juan sat on the floor and pulled out some candy. This brought back memories of the many times he had sat outside her room during her treatments, eating sweets to pass the time.
He recalled how Wu Nongyu once noticed the pile of wrappers in his trash and, worried about his teeth, gave him a specific low-sugar brand to eat instead. As he ate the last few pieces of the sour candy, tears began to fall. He told himself it was just the sourness of the candy making his eyes water, but he felt a sense of finality knowing that he wouldn't be eating them for her much longer.
In a separate part of the city, the Special Administration Bureau surrounded the building where Wu Nongyu and the others were staying. However, at Director Xia’s residence, a more direct confrontation was taking place. Mr. Ding, the head of the institute, appeared and held Director Xia at gunpoint. He revealed his true identity as Wu Ming, Wu Nongyu's father, who had staged his own death in an explosion thirteen years ago and changed his appearance.
He had known for two years that Director Xia was responsible for the death of his son, Wu Siyuan, but he had bided his time to ensure the fragments were found. Claiming that Director Xia was now useless to him, Wu Ming shot her to avenge his son's life. The next morning, Lin Juan and Xie Xinxu both prepared breakfast for Wu Nongyu. Not wanting to show favoritism, she sampled both meals and praised them.
Their quiet morning was interrupted by a news report stating that Director Xia had been shot in her home the previous night and was currently in a coma following emergency surgery. Xie Xinxu noted that with Director Xia incapacitated, there would be no one left to obstruct their progress in developing the medicine, though Wu Nongyu felt an uneasy sense of suddenness regarding the event.
At the hospital, a distraught Xia Yuyan lashed out at Lu Ziye when he tried to comfort her, cursing her decision to marry someone she deemed so useless. Once she walked away, Lu Ziye immediately placed a secret call to Xie Xinxu, informing him that the evidence of the Xia family’s illegal businesses and the Mugang account books were hidden in Xia Yuyan’s car. Unfortunately, Yuyan overheard his betrayal and returned to strike him across the face.
Xia Yuyan intended to flee with the incriminating documents, which were locked in a safe inside her car. However, she was stymied by the password. During a tense exchange, Lu Ziye revealed that she failed to open it because she didn't truly know him. He had grown tired of her controlling every aspect of his life, even forcing him to change his birthday from April 14th to June 16th because she found the original date unlucky. He declared he had finally had enough of her. As Xia Yuyan attempted to drive away with the safe, her path was abruptly blocked by Xie Xinxu.
