Wu Nongyu regained consciousness on a hospital bed at the Genus Biomedical Research Institute after an unsettling night. The chaotic events of the previous evening, including a terrifying encounter and her subsequent collapse after hitting a pillar, felt like a bewildering nightmare she couldn't clearly recall, though she remembered hitting her head and suffering a slight concussion.
Gu Yanqing, a researcher at the institute, informed her and her friend, Chen Yiyi, that they had become disoriented and weak from consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms during their picnic, which led to them being found unconscious in the woods. Chen Yiyi corroborated this, vividly describing seeing numerous attackers and fighting them, only to be told it was all a hallucination.
Despite the logical explanation, Wu Nongyu harbored a deep unease; Gu Yanqing's striking resemblance to Xie Xinxu, the prime suspect from the Qiuxiao Manor case five years ago, haunted her. She mentally noted that while his demeanor was different, the physical likeness was too strong to ignore. She pondered if he was a highly intelligent, antisocial individual skilled at disguise and considered warning the director.
Carrying her doubts, Wu Nongyu began her internship at the Genus Biological Research Lab, an impressive facility that nonetheless exuded a peculiar atmosphere. She observed a strict senior and the eccentric Director Ding, who seemed overly enthusiastic about mushrooms, even after hearing they had caused the interns' predicament. During their orientation, Gu Yanqing introduced a donated cadaver as their "silent teacher."
An emergency arose shortly after: Director Ding was informed that two bodies were missing from the morgue, and the surveillance system had failed to capture anything. He instructed his staff to seal off this information and meticulously review all surveillance footage from the building, leaving no stone unturned.
Due to the emergency, their planned dinner with the director was postponed, and Gu Yanqing escorted the interns to their dorms on the seventy-sixth floor, cautioning them not to wander around at night. Still plagued by doubts, Wu Nongyu messaged her brother, Wu Siyuan, a police officer, asking about the fate of Xie Xinxu from the Qiuxiao Manor case. While engrossed in her phone, she accidentally bumped into Gu Yanqing, quickly apologizing.
Later, as she was about to close her room door for the night, Gu Yanqing abruptly extended his hand, stopping her, and declared he "couldn't take it anymore" and needed to enter. Wu Nongyu recoiled in fear, falling back onto her bed. It turned out Gu Yanqing had inadvertently brushed against a freshly painted doorframe, staining his clothes, and desperately needed to use her restroom.
Seizing the opportunity, Wu Nongyu feigned an accident, splashing water on him with the showerhead, hoping to expose a particular scar she believed Xie Xinxu carried. Gu Yanqing's response was sharp and professional; he sarcastically offered for her to help him clean his wet pants and warned her to focus on academic pursuits rather than inappropriate behavior. Feeling embarrassed and frustrated by the incident, Wu Nongyu received a call from Wu Siyuan.
Her brother inquired why she was asking about Xie Xinxu, to which she explained her recurring nightmares about his unsettling eyes. Wu Siyuan revealed that Xie Xinxu had died of illness four years ago, bringing a sense of relief to Wu Nongyu, who assured her brother she was settled and safe at the institute. Despite the reassuring news, Wu Nongyu found herself alone in the cafeteria late that night, still feeling awkward about her earlier encounter with Gu Yanqing.
The area also had poor phone signal. Suddenly, she heard a distinct thumping noise. Though terrified, she went to investigate and was attacked by a figure resembling a cadaver, getting knocked to the ground. Just as she was about to be overwhelmed, Gu Yanqing appeared, rescuing her from the assailant. As he confronted the attacker, Gu Yanqing possessively stated that the girl was his and warned the attacker not to touch her.
