As Vice Prefect Lin exited his carriage, Shen Shaoguang rushed forward, identifying herself and apologizing for her earlier behavior. Lin Yan, having been informed by Shen Shaojie that Shen Shaoguang was the principal instigator of price inflation, sternly warned her to cease her disruptive antics, or risk a public flogging. That evening, Shen Shaoguang confronted Shen Shaojie, furious that he had exposed her as the mastermind.

Shen Shaojie defended himself, stating that he now understood Lin Yan was their ancestor and questioned why he seemed to dislike Jianbing Guozi. Shen Shaoguang chastised him for ruining her plans and urged him to find a way to approach their ancestor and enter Yunshui Manor. Determined to capture Lin Yan's attention, Shen Shaoguang set up her pancake stall in front of the Capital Prefecture. She tried various new flavors and promotions, including "five-colored pancakes," hoping he would notice her.

However, despite her efforts over several days, Lin Yan, busy with his official duties, passed by without a second glance, leading Shen Shaoguang to lament that he must be the person who disliked Jianbing Guozi the most. Meanwhile, after the morning court session, Pei Fei, the new Censor, attempted to obtain the transfer documents for Lin Yan from Vice Minister Zhang of the Ministry of Personnel. Vice Minister Zhang, however, made excuses and dismissed Pei Fei.

Just then, Lin Yan arrived. Observing the situation, he approached Vice Minister Zhang's carriage and subtly reminded him that the documents were crucial for the Capital Prefecture's assessment. Sensing an implicit warning, Vice Minister Zhang promptly changed his tune, blaming his subordinates for the delay and promising to send the documents to the Censorate by the next morning. Lin Yan then invited Pei Fei to his residence for a meal.

Pei Fei, deeply grateful for Lin Yan's assistance, felt protected from further obstruction. During the meal, Pei Fei remarked on Lin Yan's simple diet. Lin Yan explained he did not see the need to fuss over food, as long as it filled his stomach. Pei Fei insisted on repaying his kindness with a return invitation, but Lin Yan assured him it wasn't necessary. Later, Lin Yan, accompanied by Liu Chang, proceeded to Yunshui Manor.

He intended to enter a secret chamber that his father had prevented him from accessing in the past. To their surprise, a complex Western Regions lock, which only his parents knew how to open, barred their way. Frustrated by her failed attempts to get Lin Yan's attention, Shen Shaoguang devised a grand plan. She created numerous "free meal" flyers, folding them into paper airplanes and launching them over the walls of the Capital Prefecture.

Lin Yan discovered one of the flyers, which announced a free tasting of pancakes. Reflecting on the Shen family's peculiar behavior—their unique writing, the way they folded things, their business methods, and their manner of speaking—he began to suspect they were deliberately trying to draw his attention and decided to investigate. Meanwhile, Pei Fei, still mindful of his meager salary, stumbled upon one of Shen Shaoguang's flyers.

He seized the opportunity to reciprocate Lin Yan's hospitality without spending money and suggested they visit the "free tasting" diner. The Shen family, ecstatic to finally have Lin Yan as their guest, greeted them with fervent enthusiasm, eagerly plying them with drinks. Lin Yan, however, feigned drunkenness. The Shen family, believing him incapacitated, began discreetly searching his person for the key to Yunshui Manor.

As Shen Shaoguang reached into his robes, Lin Yan seized her hand, revealing he was not drunk. Liu Chang, who had been waiting outside, immediately entered and apprehended the Shen family, taking them to the Capital Prefecture for interrogation. Remembering his grandfather's stories about Lin Yan being ruthless before he met their ancestor, Shen Shaojie fainted upon seeing the torture instruments Lin Yan had brought out.

Lin Yan demanded to know the Shen family's true identities and intentions, threatening to kill one of them if they remained silent. Thinking quickly, Shen Shaoguang blurted out that she was Lin Yan's fiancée. She then revealed his true identity as Cui Che from Qingyang, adding that his family had been exterminated when he was eight years old due to his father's capital offense, and he had survived by changing his name and identity.

Lin Yan, visibly surprised, acknowledged that few in the capital knew of his true origin, apart from Liu Chang. Shen Shaoguang further explained that the Shen family, being his in-laws, would also suffer if his true identity were exposed. While Lin Yan remembered being betrothed to a Zheng family, Shen Shaoguang insisted he must have misremembered due to his young age at the time. Slightly mollified, Lin Yan hesitated.

Seizing the moment, Shen Shaoguang boldly requested that her family be allowed to reside in Yunshui Manor, posing as his distant cousins who had fallen on hard times. Lin Yan refused, but Shen Shaoguang, undeterred, threatened to loudly accuse him of abandonment in public. Faced with the potential scandal, Lin Yan reluctantly agreed. Once settled in Yunshui Manor, the Shen family immediately offered apologies to their ancestors for their audacious actions.

Shen Shaojie expressed concerns about a "butterfly effect" altering their future due to their lies. Just then, a shadow passed by the window, prompting Shen Shaoguang to exclaim in English. Meanwhile, Liu Chang, who had been eavesdropping outside, reported to Lin Yan that he couldn't understand what the Shen family was murmuring. Lin Yan recalled his parents had arranged his marriage to a family surnamed Zheng, not Shen, and ordered Liu Chang to keep a close watch on them. He remembered his parents urging him to survive and clear their family's name after their tragic demise, with Liu Chang by his side.
