At night, an intruder named Tan Rang was discovered by Ye Zhaonan and the two men with her, who are her father and brother. Her father and brother reacted strangely, mistaking Tan Rang for a eunuch and even offering Ye Zhaonan to him. Tan Rang was surprised to see Ye Zhaonan, noting that she was a woman and bore a striking resemblance to someone else.
He was unsure whether to act, but the arrival of a night patrol forced him to flee. He couldn't comprehend how two people could look so alike. While trying to evade pursuers, Tan Rang ran into Liu Xuanming, who immediately ordered his guards to surround him. However, Tan Rang managed to escape Liu Xuanming's grasp as well, reasoning that with his old injury unhealed and Ye Zhaonan not yet found, it was not the time for prolonged fighting.
He inadvertently entered Yun Luo's bedchamber while fleeing the chase. Startled to see a stranger, Yun Luo was initially afraid. Tan Rang threatened her, coercing her into helping him avoid detection when Liu Xuanming's search reached her door. Yun Luo told Liu Xuanming she hadn't seen anyone suspicious. Once Liu Xuanming left, seeing Tan Rang was injured, Yun Luo offered to help him rest, but then struck him and cried out, "Assassin!" alerting Liu Xuanming again.
Tan Rang escaped, but Yun Luo was unharmed. Liu Xuanming commented on the increasing number of incidents in the inner city, noting that someone had first drugged the guards in his own bedchamber, and now an assassin had appeared. Tianmu City presented their terms for alliance through marriage, demanding one hundred thousand taels of gold and the cession of Ercheng, a territory of Xuanyue City, as betrothal gifts.
Ercheng was barren and sparsely populated, and Liu Xuanming initially felt ceding it was acceptable. However, Ye Zhaonan strongly disagreed, arguing that Ercheng was part of Xuanyue City and ceding it easily was unreasonable. Liu Xuanming, thinking about who could object to the terms, considered Ye Zhaonan. He was impressed by her perspective, finding her truly exceptional. He decided to test her views further. Just then, Yao Hu announced that Princess Qi Meng of Tianmu City had entered the palace.
Liu Xuanming instructed that Ye Zhaonan, whom he called Sanmei, be prepared to accompany him to receive the Tianmu City envoys. Word of Princess Qi Meng's arrival spread, causing many palace residents to gather to witness the event, including the group planning to assassinate Liu Xuanming: Ye Zhaonan's father and brother, accompanied by Zhilan whom they had met recently. While heading to see the spectacle, they saw Zhilan being harassed.
Ye Zhaonan's brother recognized Zhilan as the woman who had helped him earlier by providing him with paper in the outhouse, and he stepped in to rescue her. Feeling safe, Zhilan followed him. The father, brother, and Zhilan were astonished to see Ye Zhaonan (Sanmei) standing beside Liu Xuanming and speculated she was getting close to him to facilitate their plan.
Meanwhile, Princess Yun Luo approached Ye Zhaonan (Sanmei), introducing herself as Liu Xuanming's favorite sister and expressing admiration for her ability to manage Liu Xuanming in the Tangmu Pavilion. As the Tianmu City envoys entered, led by Yi Yangjun, Ye Zhaonan stepped forward beside Liu Xuanming as his herald. She stopped Liu Xuanming from showing weakness, reminding him he was the city lord and represented Xuanyue.
She then addressed Yi Yangjun, demanding he dismount and walk, stating foreign envoys had no special privileges within Xuanyue territory and must obey its laws. Yi Yangjun, identifying himself as the adopted son of the Lord of Yangcheng, was angered by her intervention, deeming it presumptuous and calling for her punishment as a lowly person. Liu Xuanming declared Ye Zhaonan was his herald and spoke for him.
He stated that if Yi Yangjun could not abide by Xuanyue's laws, he should leave. Yi Yangjun threatened to depart back to Tianmu City, claiming Liu Xuanming had no interest in the alliance. Ke Qianyue, a palace official, panicked about the potential failure of the marriage alliance, fearing she wouldn't be able to deal with Mu Xi City and Ye Zhaonan afterwards. However, Ye Zhaonan remained confident they would not leave, reiterating that the alliance served both cities' interests.
She also added that Tianmu City was a great city and would not miss this opportunity, and that Yi Yangjun shouldn't ruin things over a temporary impulse. As Yi Yangjun and his retinue rode towards the palace gates, Liu Xuanming grew anxious, but Ye Zhaonan urged him to wait, assuring him they would stop. Eventually, Princess Qi Meng ordered the carriage to stop and dismounted, returning on foot. Liu Xuanming was pleased by Ye Zhaonan's bravery and strategic thinking.
He offered her a reward. Ye Zhaonan looked intently at something behind him and rushed towards it, trying to grab it, which Liu Xuanming again misinterpreted as a sign of affection or admiration for him. Princess Qi Meng then arrived, affectionately addressing Liu Xuanming as "Xuanming Gege."
She also spoke to Ye Zhaonan, complimenting her actions at the gate and saying she wished to be like her, implying she wanted to learn from her in the future, though her words carried an undercurrent. When the topic of the marriage talks arose, Qi Meng deferred to Yi Yangjun, stating her father had entrusted him with all matters, as she only wished to be Liu Xuanming's bride.
Ke Qianyue was furious with Ye Zhaonan's audacity and Liu Xuanming's reaction to her. Believing she could handle Ye Zhaonan, Ke Qianyue later tracked her, intending to confront her. Instead, she overheard Ye Zhaonan, her father, and brother (with Zhilan present) discussing their plan to kill Liu Xuanming. Ye Zhaonan's father confirmed he had successfully infiltrated the Imperial Kitchen and poisoned the wine. Her brother stated the tunnel was ready, mentioning one more person would join them that night. Ye Zhaonan (Sanmei) then arrived, appearing in different attire than before, which surprised Zhilan who was with the group. Ye Zhaonan prepared to proceed with their plan.
