Lv Ao was furious, realizing that the woman he loved, the Ugly Lady Qiqi, had been targeted and almost killed. He took responsibility for placing Qiqi in danger by setting a trap, but noted he had intended to reverse the case and release her. However, someone's haste to eliminate her meant he could no longer delay.

Consort Dowager Gao unexpectedly arrived and informed Lv Ao that Li'niang had confessed in writing to using wugs to frame the Ugly Lady and had since committed suicide for her crime. Consort Dowager Gao advised Lv Ao that since Li'niang was dead, further punishment was unnecessary. She urged him to announce Li'niang's crime promptly to clear the Ugly Lady's name and allow her an honorable return from the West Yard. Lv Ao agreed to this arrangement.

Yinzi later commented on Consort Dowager Gao's timely intervention, which ensured Qiqi could leave the West Yard without suspicion. He speculated Consort Dowager Gao might be seeking reconciliation with Lv Ao. However, Lv Ao worried that if Qiqi had defied his earlier orders, she might disrespect Consort Dowager Gao, potentially creating further complications. Qiqi received news that Li'niang had confessed and committed suicide.

Knowing Lv Ao was the real culprit, she became certain that he was ruthless enough to sacrifice his own consort. Consort Dowager Gao summoned the physician Fang Baicao to examine Qiqi. Fang Baicao declared Qiqi to be in excellent health, even stronger than most people. Later, while walking with Consort Dowager Gao, Qiqi became lost in thought, recalling conversations with her master in her hometown.

Sensing Qiqi's pensive mood, Consort Dowager Gao assumed she was missing her old friends after marrying so far from home and offered to be her "mountain of support." Qiqi, misunderstanding the term, declared she was grown up enough to protect herself. Lv Che approached and greeted them. Consort Dowager Gao, claiming tiredness, left the two alone. Qiqi attempted to leave, but Lv Che stopped her. Not wanting to get entangled with him, Qiqi made an excuse and departed.

Consort Dowager Gao, frustrated by Qiqi's apparent lack of understanding of her attempt to win her over, felt that Qiqi was being unappreciative. Later, Lv Ao tried to visit Qiqi, but she refused, citing an inauspicious day from the almanac, and sent him a letter. Inside, Lv Ao found a drawing of an egg rolling down stairs—a pun for "get lost." Enraged, he stormed into Qiqi's chamber, only to discover she had escaped through the window.

Furious, Lv Ao declared that he would never step foot in Ranxi Court again. Meanwhile, Qiqi noticed Consort Ling's maid, Fudong, kneeling weakly under the blazing sun. Fudong explained she was being punished for accidentally breaking Consort Ling's cup. Qiqi offered her water and some healing ointment. Yinzi, aware of Lv Ao's desire to see Qiqi but his reluctance, suggested Lv Ao take the initiative and give Qiqi "a step down" to improve her disposition. Lv Ao agreed.

Yinzi advised him to smile and speak gently, but Lv Ao insisted his voice was naturally stern. Yinzi then proposed a role-play, with Lv Ao acting as Qiqi and Yinzi as His Majesty, to demonstrate a softer approach. A passing eunuch, sweeping the courtyard, was terrified when he saw Yinzi seemingly about to "kiss" Lv Ao during the role-play and quickly fled, claiming he saw nothing. Qiqi encountered Lv Che again and tried to avoid him.

She told him she was going to visit Consort Dowager Gao, and Lv Che, also intending to go, suggested they first go to the Lakeside Pavilion to retrieve a painting for his mother. At the pavilion, Qiqi noticed the fish in the painting lacked eyes. Lv Che invited Qiqi to paint them. Just as Lv Ao passed by, Lv Che, noticing his presence, deliberately took Qiqi's hand to guide her. Enraged, Lv Ao struck Lv Che down.

Qiqi helped Lv Che to his feet. Lv Ao ordered her never to see Lv Che again and threw the painting into the lake. Qiqi, declaring her hatred for Lv Ao, pushed him aside. That night, Lv Ao vented his anger by practicing sword fighting. Lv Che came to confess, admitting he had developed feelings for Qiqi but had abandoned them, knowing her heart belonged to Lv Ao.

He then claimed to have found his destined partner, Chief Governor Zuo's daughter, and requested Lv Ao's blessing for their marriage, as her father was not entirely satisfied. Lv Ao immediately granted his wish. After leaving, Lv Che discarded an embroidered pouch he had falsely claimed was from his beloved, revealing his deception. Rumors spread throughout the palace that Consort Ling had been afflicted with a wug curse, with many suspecting Lady Li had been a mere scapegoat.

Qiqi knew this new incident was directed at her and, hiding her intentions from Heng, prepared to thoroughly check all the jars and containers in Ranxi Court. At that moment, Fudong, the maid Qiqi had previously helped, arrived to visit. Lian Qiao informed Lv Ao that Qiqi wanted to see him and had a "show" planned. Lv Ao, secretly thrilled, feigned nonchalance.

He then went to Ranxi Court, where he was surprised to find Consort Dowager Gao already present, as Qiqi had invited them both. They hid, and soon a person snuck in and planted wugs near Qiqi's bed. Heng immediately apprehended the culprit, who, under interrogation by Lv Ao, confessed to being sent by Consort Ling to frame the Ugly Lady. The next day, Consort Ling denied her involvement, but Qiqi brought Fudong forward as a witness, who corroborated the accusations. Consort Ling, unable to refute the evidence, was sent home to reflect, forbidden from returning to the palace without a royal summons.
