The Second Master sternly warned Yubing to cease all private contact with Zhou Jue, threatening to expel her if he saw them together again. Fang Er arrived and tried to mediate, mentioning that Ke Ye also disapproved of Zhou Jue. However, the Second Master curtly dismissed her, asking if his actions required her approval.
The Second Master then made secret arrangements with his men to gather at "Old Place" at 6:45 PM, emphasizing that Fang Er should not be made aware of their plans. Chongliming confronted Zhou Jue, expressing his frustration that Zhou Jue was involved everywhere, from the capital to Sichuan, questioning the Alliance Congregation's intentions.
Zhou Jue clarified that the Rights Protection meeting was a coalition of various groups—gentry, workers, farmers, Green Dragon Society members, and ordinary citizens—all seeking to reclaim their railway stock capital through peaceful negotiation. Chongliming, however, accused Zhou Jue of merely inciting unrest. Chongliming asserted that he was not in Sichuan to guarantee the railway contract, but rather to ensure the stock capital issue was resolved before any signing occurred.
Zhou Jue suggested they were allies, sharing the same goal, but Chongliming vehemently rejected any alliance, declaring the Alliance Congregation as enemies of the court. He then warned Zhou Jue to stay away from A Yi, reminding him that he, Chongliming, had the final say over A Yi. Zhou Jue countered that he merely shared revolutionary principles with A Yi, and that no one could truly control another's ideological awakening.
Outside the Far East Railway Company, members of the Green Dragon Society staged a passionate protest, shouting "Get out of China!" and demanding their stock be returned. Inside, Mary and Allen were discussing the contract. As the crowd grew agitated and began throwing bombs, Weng Gou and Wagner tried to hold the line. Wagner urged Weng Gou not to harm the public and quickly escorted Mary away from the windows, recognizing that bloodshed would escalate the situation beyond control.
Allen, intending to confront the crowd with gunfire, tried to open the doors and ordered his men to shoot, but Weng Gou physically restrained him, even pulling him to safety from an incoming bomb blast. Despite Weng Gou's efforts to prevent casualties, some delegation members were injured, leaving Mary furious. Mary confronted Chongliming at the county office, accusing his men of being accomplices to the "mobs" who attacked the railway company, leading to injuries.
Chongliming calmly explained that Weng Gou and Wagner acted correctly, preventing further bloodshed which would have irrevocably damaged the company's relationship with the Nanan populace and derailed any chance of a contract. He emphasized that the protestors were desperate, not violent, and the real issue was the stolen stock capital. He asserted that only the company's financial compensation to the people could resolve the conflict.
If Mary refused to pay, he suggested she return to England and abandon the contract altogether, as a forcibly signed agreement would only lead to unimaginable consequences. Mary argued that her company wouldn't pay for the Qing Dynasty officials' mistakes and asked if there were other solutions besides money. Chongliming insisted that solving the stock capital issue was the only way forward. Chongliming took a hesitant Mary to a local porridge factory, where countless displaced people sought food.
He explained that these once-prosperous citizens lost everything after investing in the railway, their funds embezzled, leaving them desperate. He urged Mary to understand that these people, driven to the brink, would violently resist any forced signing. He reiterated that compensating the stock capital was the only path to a peaceful resolution and successful railway construction.
Mary, shaken by the scene, finally conceded that if she wanted to continue negotiations, she would need to demonstrate a willingness to address the issue. She insisted that she would only negotiate with the actual head of the Rights Protection meeting. Chongliming agreed to help her find this person, looking her in the eye and assuring her of his sincerity.
Can Yan Xin learned from Cao county order that the influential Liu Yanjun, the sole "juren" in Nanan, was the general director of the Rights Protection meeting. Cao county order explained that local gentry and nobles held significant power, even he, the county magistrate, had to show them respect. Since gentry had heavily invested in railway shares, Liu Yanjun naturally became the director. Can Yan Xin decided to visit Liu Yanjun.
Upon arrival, they were initially blocked by a guard named Jiading, whom Weng Gou easily subdued. Liu Yanjun then emerged, welcoming them with a smile. Can Yan Xin proposed that the Far East Railway Company was willing to offer funds to resolve part of the stock capital issue, provided the Rights Protection meeting could present a definitive representative and agree to cease protests for a smooth contract signing.
Liu Yanjun, stating he deeply felt the people's suffering as he too had invested heavily, assured them he would dedicate himself to doing what was right for the public and agreed to negotiate. Chongliming discovered A Yi's room empty and found the book "Three People's Principles" on his bed, immediately becoming upset. Meanwhile, A Yi was with Zhou Jue, seeking clarification on aspects of the book.
Zhou Jue explained that Sun Yat-sen's nationalism was about a "national spirit," emphasizing that while Chinese people had strong family and clan loyalties, they lacked a unified national identity and a willingness to sacrifice for the country. He cited Europe and Russia as examples of nations that underwent revolutions to rebuild their political systems, asserting that China too needed revolution to reunite its national spirit. This discussion greatly enlightened A Yi, sparking his aspirations for revolution.
A Yi returned late, and Chongliming, having discovered "Three People's Principles," confronted him. Chongliming was furious, dismissively calling A Yi's revolutionary ideals "childish" and claiming to understand them perfectly but deeming them unrealistic. He angrily forbade A Yi from seeing Zhou Jue again, asserting his authority as the head of Brilliant Situation and demanding A Yi's obedience.
A Yi, however, argued back, challenging why Chongliming could meet Zhou Jue but he couldn't, and questioning if being a member of Brilliant Situation meant he couldn't have his own thoughts. Furious, Chongliming stormed out, taking A Yi's book with him. Chongliming brought A Yi's book, "Three People's Principles," to Yuchu and asked her to talk sense into A Yi, to prevent him from associating with Zhou Jue.
Yuchu, frustrated, suggested arresting Zhou Jue to eliminate future problems, but Chongliming gently dismissed the idea, urging her to focus on A Yi. Later, Chongliming informed Mary that he had identified two key figures in the Rights Protection meeting: Liu Yanjun, the publicly recognized director and gentry representative, and Zhou Jue, the covert supporter from the Alliance Congregation.
He explained that Zhou Jue was an enemy of the court, but assured Mary he was working to promote a peaceful resolution and offered her the choice of who to negotiate with. Meanwhile, Allen met with Cao county order, subtly pressuring him to quell the growing public unrest. He offered Cao county order three gold bars, requesting him to convince Liu Yanjun to prevent any further disturbances so that the railway contract could proceed smoothly.
Cao county order, swayed by the bribe, agreed to try. Mary met with Zhou Jue, accompanied by Yang Ming, and attempted to engage in polite conversation, mentioning his English, his studies in Japan, and Britain's historical support for Chinese revolutionaries like Sun Yat-sen. Zhou Jue, however, cut straight to the point, demanding to know how much compensation the company was willing to offer the public for their stock.
Mary, frustrated by the ongoing protests, asked Zhou Jue to persuade the people to stop their agitation and offered him a personal "thank you" in the form of three gold bars. Zhou Jue scornfully rejected the bribe, declaring that he had mistakenly believed this would be an equal negotiation. He criticized her company for seeking millions in long-term profits while only offering a paltry sum to resolve the stock issue. With nothing more to say, he turned and left.
Cao county order hosted Liu Yanjun for a banquet, presenting him with two gold bars from the "foreigners." Cao county order explained that the British had no intention of fully refunding the stock and encouraged Liu Yanjun to accept the bribe and temporarily pacify his followers.
Although Liu Yanjun acknowledged his own significant railway investment was worth far more, he eventually accepted the gold, agreeing to discuss the matter with his people and prevent further unrest, reasoning that they would need to maintain a relationship with the foreigners for future dealings. Yuchu desperately tried to convince A Yi to distance himself from Zhou Jue, arguing that Zhou Jue's revolution targeted people like them and that the Alliance Congregation and Brilliant Situation were irreconcilable enemies.
A Yi, however, disagreed, believing Zhou Jue's goals aligned with Chongliming's desire for a better country, and insisted Yuchu meet Zhou Jue to understand. A Yi then brought Yuchu to Zhou Jue. There, Yuchu directly warned Zhou Jue to stop influencing A Yi, emphasizing A Yi's loyalty to Brilliant Situation and the inherent conflict between their factions.
Zhou Jue calmly responded that he merely offered A Yi "a new window" for choice, implying A Yi was not like Yuchu or Chongliming, who were royal relatives, but A Yi quickly interjected, clarifying he joined Brilliant Situation voluntarily. Yuchu, frustrated, threw the "Three People's Principles" book back at Zhou Jue and abruptly left with A Yi. As Yuchu and A Yi exited, Yuchu suddenly froze upon seeing Yang Ming.
A Yi, unaware of the reason for her distress, introduced Yang Ming as Zhou Jue's protector. Overwhelmed with grief, Yuchu quickly pulled A Yi away, breaking down in tears and pleading with him to stop seeing Zhou Jue. A Yi was bewildered by her intense emotional reaction.
