A Yi and Big silly were brutally beaten by Qing soldiers in prison. Vice Captain Yang Zhen arrived to stop the assault, realizing that Jia Chang'an was once again abusing his authority under the guise of apprehending rebels. Yang Zhen, holding Chong Liming's name card that was found on A Yi, confronted Jia Chang'an.

Jia Chang'an insisted the name card was stolen and warned Yang Zhen, reminding him that as a mere fifth-grade infantry vice captain, he shouldn't interfere, especially since the Empress Dowager's secret decree granted the Jiumen Admiral, Infantry Commander of Patrols the power to execute suspected rebels without prior approval. Jia Chang'an also made veiled threats about Yang Zhen's past. Undeterred, Yang Zhen stated his intention to inform Chong Liming.

Meanwhile, Chong Liming learned from Can Yan Xin via telegram that Wen Gou and Wagner had successfully intercepted a shipment of arms by double-crossing the Russian dealers. They discussed the need for discretion, as Rui Zhen seemed to be aware of their operation. Yang Zhen then arrived to inform Chong Liming of A Yi's arrest, presenting the name card.

Enraged that Jia Chang'an dared to apprehend someone under his protection, Chong Liming, accompanied by Can Yan Xin, stormed into the prison. He instructed Yang Zhen to leave, as his involvement could complicate his position within the Infantry Commander's Yamen. Chong Liming found Jia Chang'an torturing A Yi. He brutally slapped Jia Chang'an twice. When Jia Chang'an protested Chong Liming's use of force in the yamen, Can Yan Xin drew his weapon, forcing Jia Chang'an to beg for mercy.

Chong Liming then freed A Yi and Big silly, returning the name card to A Yi and advising him to state his affiliation with Erji Chong Liming if ever in trouble again. A Yi, initially hesitant, accepted the name card. The group, including Yang Zhen, gathered to celebrate. Chong Liming encouraged Yang Zhen to stand firm as a Shenji Camp member and a respected officer. He also requested Yang Zhen to temporarily store the newly acquired arms at his residence.

A Yi, upon learning that Chong Liming was the Vice Commander of the Shenji Camp, reacted with surprise and deep thought. Shortly after, a letter from Rui Zhen of the Infantry Commander's Yamen arrived for Chong Liming, who promptly left for Shanglin Xianguan. At Shanglin Xianguan, Rui Zhen informed Chong Liming that members of the Alliance Congregation were scheduled to meet at 5 PM in Peony Hall and that Solang and Shiyin had made discreet arrangements outside.

Chong Liming then noticed Zhou Jue among the attendees. As the time neared 5 PM, Chong Liming generously rewarded Fang Er, a courtesan dancing on stage. Fang Er then threw her embroidered ball, which landed in Zhou Jue's hands, signifying he was to spend the night with her. Zhou Jue attempted to decline, citing an urgent matter, but Fang Er secretly revealed that he was exposed and couldn't leave, emphasizing that Chong Liming had arranged for her to protect him.

Zhou Jue worried about his companions, but Fang Er warned that if he left, they, including Chong Liming, would all be in danger. During the commotion, Chong Liming directly instructed Fang Er to help Zhou Jue escape. Simultaneously, a fierce gunfight erupted in the hall, and Rui Zhen's forces successfully eliminated the Alliance Congregation members. Back at the feast, A Yi and Yang Zhen engaged in a heated drinking contest.

Yang Zhen's derogatory comments about "countrymen" sparked a strong reaction from A Yi. In his drunken state, A Yi stumbled into a forbidden area within Yang Fu, a private room where he discovered his own rouge box on the table. This discovery triggered a brief flashback, revealing his personal mission to avenge his village and find his mother, suspecting the Shenji Camp's involvement. Yang Zhen's mother, Ruowan, then entered, mistaking A Yi for her son "Zhen'er."

She became distraught and clung to him, holding a rouge box and mentioning it was the last thing her son's mother had left him. Yang Zhen, hearing the commotion, rushed in, pulled A Yi away, fired a warning shot, and identified himself to his mother, who remained confused. Can Yan Xin later explained to A Yi that Ruowan had suffered mental trauma years ago, and her courtyard was a restricted area, thus excusing Yang Zhen's extreme reaction.

Can Yan Xin attempted to recruit A Yi into the Shenji Camp, emphasizing Chong Liming's interest in him. However, A Yi refused, stating he had no connection to Chong Liming and returned the name card, much to Can Yan Xin's frustration. A Yi then helped a heavily intoxicated Big silly back to their lodging. Big silly expressed remorse for having eaten all the food A Yi brought.

A Yi then confessed to Big silly that he had taken the rouge box he found from Yang Fu, claiming it was rightfully his. Big silly, reminding A Yi of his noble heritage, implored him not to resort to stealing, and A Yi promised to stop. Chong Liming was annoyed that Can Yan Xin had let A Yi leave without obtaining his address.

He also chastised Yang Zhen for firing at A Yi, despite Yang Zhen's explanation that it was merely a warning shot. Meanwhile, Yang Zhen, disturbed by Jia Chang'an's earlier taunts about his past, used A Yi's rouge box to calm his mother, who affectionately called him "Zhen'er" after receiving it. Fang Er informed Chong Liming that Zhou Jue had departed, leaving a note with the address "Yunfen Building" and revealing himself to be a revolutionary.

Later that night, Chong Liming, along with Wen Gou and others, delivered the newly acquired arms, including Maxim machine guns, to Yang Fu for temporary storage to avoid detection by the Infantry Commander's Yamen. Wen Gou enthusiastically demonstrated the Maxim's superior features compared to the Gatling, highlighting its lighter weight, higher firing rate (600 rounds per minute), and extended range (2500 meters). Chong Liming, Can Yan Xin, and Yang Zhen then set out to find Zhou Jue.

Chong Liming confronted Zhou Jue, expressing surprise that he had returned despite being spared once before. Zhou Jue then recalled their first encounter in Japan. In a flashback, a younger Chong Liming and his friends, all noble students, casually discussed political news, including Liang Qichao forming the "Political News Agency," and dismissively joked about the Emperor's situation. Zhou Jue, present at the same restaurant, criticized them as "good-for-nothing noble sons" who would lead the Qing dynasty to ruin.

Chong Liming and his friends retorted, questioning Zhou Jue's purpose in Japan. Zhou Jue declared that he and his comrades were there to save China. Chong Liming challenged him on his methods. Zhou Jue, introducing himself, then cut his finger, demonstrating his solemn commitment and declaring that the true path to national salvation required "real blood rebirth," daring Chong Liming to join.
