Si San presented a detailed map to Chong Liming, outlining Yang Zhen's daily activities and routes. Yang Zhen, now the Deputy Brigade Commander of the Beiyang Army, resided in the city, with the county magistrate's office serving as the Beiyang Army's headquarters, which Yang Zhen frequently visited. He also occasionally patrolled the city defenses, accompanied by an estimated twenty to thirty vigilant guards. Chong Liming, lamenting their lack of firearms, asked Si San if he could procure any.
Si San proposed two options: attacking patrol officers or stealing from the arsenal. Chong Liming dismissed the idea of attacking patrol officers, reasoning that such an act would only heighten the enemy's alertness. He then inquired about the arsenal's location, which Si San identified as the northwest corner of the city. Chong Liming recalled A Yi mentioning that the National Guard had previously bombed the arsenal during their retreat.
Si San confirmed this, explaining that the Beiyang Army had not yet rebuilt it, and their current arms were stored in an underground bunker within a warehouse. Just as Chong Liming considered stealing from there, Si San grew suspicious. He realized that Nanan City was heavily guarded, yet Chong Liming and his three companions had entered without incident. He concluded they had walked into an ambush. Indeed, Captain Miao and his Beiyang Army troops had surrounded the Dexing Hotel.
Miao declared that the individuals inside were "extremely dangerous" and ordered his men to "kill without mercy," initiating a furious volley of gunfire into the building. Chong Liming's group managed to escape through a window, with Si San leading them through narrow alleys. However, Wagner, lagging behind, was shot. He urged his comrades to leave him, unwilling to be a burden. Wagner was subsequently captured by Captain Miao. Back at home, Qing'er was fraught with worry over Wagner.
Her grandfather, old horse head, chided her for allowing Wagner to join Chong Liming's "nonsense." Qing'er defended Wagner, explaining that this mission was his personal "knot" and that he wouldn't be at peace otherwise. She expressed her belief that he would return safely to her and their newborn son, Kang Kang. Meanwhile, Captain Miao subjected Wagner to severe torture, but Wagner remained silent.
Yang Zhen eventually appeared, revealing that he had recognized Si San at the celebration and had meticulously planned the ambush, intending to lure Chong Liming's group out. Wagner, enraged, denounced Yang Zhen as a traitor to Yan Shi Fan, vowing to kill him. Yang Zhen retorted that the imperial court had appointed him as the new Fan Zhu.
Wagner continued to hurl insults, mockingly questioning Yang Zhen's rise from a "stray dog" to a Beiyang Army Deputy Brigade Commander and accusing him of once again pledging allegiance to someone new. Yang Zhen ignored the taunts, intent on using Wagner to capture Chong Liming, and inquired about the whereabouts of Chong Liming, Ke Yanxin, Si San, Wen Gou, and particularly A Yi, lamenting A Yi's absence.
Yang Zhen ordered Captain Miao to conduct a house-to-house search, including stables and ditches, and to bolster the city's defenses with continuous, rotating guard shifts and two additional platoons under the pretext of catching spies. He was confident that Chong Liming's group would not escape. With nowhere else to go, Chong Liming, Si San, Wen Gou, and Ke Yanxin sought refuge at Liu Zhiren's residence.
Si San expressed remorse over Wagner's capture, but Chong Liming reassured him that Yang Zhen wouldn't harm Wagner, as he was merely a bait to draw them out. Chong Liming promised they would rescue Wagner promptly. The group subdued Liu Zhiren's private guards, tying them up in the firewood room. Chong Liming then confronted Liu Zhiren, who, terrified, begged for mercy. Ke Yanxin, seeing Liu Zhiren's opium pipe, felt a strong craving and was promptly sent out by Chong Liming.
Chong Liming threatened Liu Zhiren's concubine, compelling him to go to the county magistrate's office that very night to check for any new prisoners, specifically one with a gunshot wound to the leg. Liu Zhiren obediently complied. That night, Ke Yanxin secretly found Liu Zhiren's opium and pipes and burned them all, fearing he would succumb to temptation. Chong Liming was deeply pleased, certain that Ke Yanxin could now overcome his addiction.
Liu Zhiren, after visiting Cao County Magistrate, learned that a spy had been apprehended and was being held in prison, with a reward of fifty silver for information or one hundred for direct capture. He returned to his house, eager to exploit this information. Chong Liming, having inspected Liu Zhiren's rusty and unusable firearms, decided they needed to create a diversion to rescue Wagner.
He proposed that A Yi bomb the Beiyang Army's arsenal, and Ke Yanxin volunteered to deliver the message. Ke Yanxin rode out of the city and passed a dilapidated temple, a haven for homeless refugees suffering from injuries and illness. Deeply moved, he gave all his money to Wu Guan Jia, who recognized him, instructing him to use it for the refugees' medical needs. Ke Yanxin then entrusted Wu Guan Jia with the message for A Yi.
When A Yi received the message, Zhou Jue expressed reservations about bombing the arsenal due to potentially inaccurate intelligence and the numerous Beiyang Army strongholds along the route. However, A Yi was resolute in rescuing Wagner and was convinced by Si San's reliable information. He declared his intention to proceed, even if it meant taking a detour. A Yi noted their limited resources: only one cannon and three shells.
He planned to lead a squad to a small highland five li east of Nanan city, aiming to set up the cannon by noon. Despite the inherent risks, A Yi believed destroying the Beiyang Army's arms inventory was a worthwhile endeavor. Zhou Jue ultimately conceded, instructing A Yi to withdraw immediately after firing the three shells, regardless of the mission's success. Under the cover of night, Si San and Wen Gou ambushed and disarmed two patrolling soldiers, donning their uniforms.
Chong Liming also put on a military uniform, and the three positioned themselves outside the county magistrate's office. At the designated time, A Yi and his soldiers arrived at the small highland and quickly set up the cannon. A Yi personally directed the firing, adjusting the angle after the first two shots missed, ensuring the third and final shell struck the arsenal directly. The explosion sent shockwaves through the city.
Yang Zhen immediately dispatched Beiyang Army troops towards the burning arsenal, while also ordering some men to locate the cannon's position. Seizing the opportunity, Chong Liming, Si San, and Wen Gou stormed the prison, eliminating the guards and freeing Wagner. Their escape was discovered by county magistrate officers, leading to a fierce gun battle. At the back gate, Ke Yanxin intercepted approaching Beiyang Army reinforcements, disarming them and eliminating them one by one.
Chong Liming provided cover as Si San and Wen Gou helped the injured Wagner towards the waiting carriage. Ke Yanxin assisted Wagner onto the cart, and Chong Liming and Wen Gou quickly followed. Si San, however, was left behind. He frantically chased the carriage, but the horses, spooked by the gunfire, bolted. Si San was shot.
Chong Liming desperately clung to his hand, but Si San, refusing to be a burden, forcefully broke free, turned, and fired at the pursuing soldiers before being cut down by a barrage of bullets. Chong Liming, Wagner, and the others watched in heartbroken anguish. Chong Liming, Wen Gou, and Ke Yanxin brought Wagner back to Liu Zhiren's mansion, only to discover Liu Zhiren actively informing the Beiyang Army about their presence.
Liu Zhiren exaggeratedly claimed Chong Liming and his group had been staying in his house for days, bullying them, and threatening him with his concubine. He reminded the soldiers of his loyal support for their brigade commander and demanded protection. Faced with this betrayal, Ke Yanxin led the group to the backyard of the dilapidated temple, where they sought refuge with Wu Guan Jia.
Wu Guan Jia, having seen them enter over the wall, assured Ke Yanxin that he would keep their presence a secret from the other refugees and would not let anyone in the main hall know.
