A Yi, Si San, Wen Gou, Can Yan Xin, and Yu Chu worked diligently to remove a safe from a secret room at Shanglin Xianguan. During the process, they inadvertently made noise, alerting a courtesan in an adjacent room who cried out for help. Guards from Shanglin Xianguan quickly surrounded them. A fierce shootout ensued, during which Si San was injured. Yu Chu provided cover fire, allowing the group to fight their way out of the encirclement and escape.

Yu Chu discovered only an account ledger detailing the Blue Gang's bribes to officials inside the safe. Furious, she confronted Chongliming, demanding to know why he endangered their lives for such an item. Chongliming calmly explained that the ledger contained a list of corrupt officials whom Zhe Yu intended to target. Upon reviewing the names, Yu Chu realized the significance of the document and had no further argument.

Later that night, she delivered the ledger to Zhe Yu, who was pleased with the intelligence and instructed her to continue monitoring Chongliming's activities. Meanwhile, Lian Er, upon learning of the stolen ledger, was not overly concerned. He understood that the authorities were targeting the bribed officials, not the Blue Gang itself. However, he deemed it problematic for the ledger to remain outside his control and dispatched men to retrieve it.

After careful consideration, Lian Er decided it would be beneficial to maintain a friendly relationship with Chongliming. Later, Lian Er arrived at the Shenji camp mansion, bringing expensive foreign wines as a gesture of goodwill. Can Yan Xin admired the quality of the wines. When Lian Er learned Chongliming was absent, he directly offered Can Yan Xin 5000 silver notes in exchange for the Blue Gang's ledger.

Can Yan Xin accepted the bribe, promising to put in a good word for Lian Er and share the money with his comrades. Yu Chu then arrived, urgently seeking Chongliming. She was frustrated to learn he hadn't returned. Si San inadvertently mentioned that they had gone to Shanglin Xianguan to drown their sorrows, revealing to an indignant Yu Chu that the establishment had been unsealed.

Indignant that Shanglin Xianguan had been unsealed, Yu Chu immediately went there to find Fang'er, hoping to learn Chongliming's whereabouts. Fang'er, however, was uncooperative and accused Yu Chu of causing trouble. Yu Chu followed her to a room, where Chongliming was not present, and pressed for information. Fang'er claimed ignorance, prompting Yu Chu to admit that Chongliming was on a dangerous and uncommunicated mission. Fang'er then mentioned that Chongliming had been investigating a "register of the former emperor's daily life."

Following this lead, Yu Chu visited Old Ma's mutton soup restaurant, inquiring about Chongliming's whereabouts from Old Ma and his granddaughter, Qing'er. Qing'er expressed concern for Chongliming's safety. Old Ma confirmed Chongliming had met with some palace officials at his restaurant, overhearing the name Dong Lianhai. To pursue his investigation into Dong Lianhai, Chongliming traveled alone to Dong Jiayu, located outside the capital. Along the way, he passed through a stunning field of pink Fengling flowers.

He spoke to a local beekeeper who shared a peculiar fact about the flowers: each year, before they wilt, they must be burned completely to ensure a more vibrant bloom the following year. The beekeeper warned that the smoke from this "Flower robbery" process could cause severe dizziness, disorientation, and even death, deeply unsettling Chongliming. Chongliming eventually reached Dong Jiayu, only to find villagers holding a funeral. He inquired about the deceased and learned that Dong Lianhai had passed away.

Disturbed, Chongliming proceeded to the Dong family mansion, which was adorned with mourning banners. He found Dong Lianhai's adopted son, Dong Xiao, leading the rites. Chongliming strode in, demanding to see Dong Lianhai, scattering the housekeepers who tried to block his way. Dong Xiao emerged, claiming that his godfather, Dong Lianhai, had died from profound grief after the Empress Dowager's passing and had already been buried.

Chongliming expressed his disbelief and questioned the housekeepers, the cook, and a maid for more specific details about Dong Lianhai's final days, including who discovered the body, which doctors were consulted, and his daily meals. The cook mentioned that Dong Lianhai enjoyed elaborate dishes like fried fish and osmanthus wings, and his specialty was quail. Chongliming ordered two portions of quail, intending to stay.

Despite Dong Xiao's protests, Chongliming insisted on spending the night in the mourning hall, claiming to fear no ghosts. Back at the Shenji camp, Mu Yi conducted a cross-dressing and disguise training session for the new members. He had Si San, Can Yan Xin, Wen Gou, Wagner, and Yu Chu paint their faces and don costumes, emphasizing that agents must be able to adopt different personas for various missions, including reconnaissance and assassination.

He stressed that successful disguise required not just physical transformation but a complete shift in temperament, making them truly believe they were the character. Wen Gou struggled with the feminine movements and recitations, often drawing laughter and exasperated corrections from Mu Yi. As night fell over Dong Jiayu, Chongliming, unable to rest, went to the mourning hall. He encountered the cook, who was startled by his presence. Chongliming questioned the cook about the location of the Dong family ancestral graves.

The terrified cook revealed they were two miles behind the village. Chongliming ordered the cook to accompany him to the gravesite, promising him another chance to cook quail. Despite the cook's frantic pleas and claims of never having been to a graveyard at night, Chongliming forced him to go, even making him carry a pickaxe. Meanwhile, Yu Chu, piecing together the information she had gathered, concluded that Chongliming was secretly investigating the cause of the former emperor's death.

She reported her suspicions to Zhe Yu, detailing Chongliming's extensive inquiries into the emperor's final days and his verification of the daily life registry. Zhe Yu confirmed that appointing Chongliming to lead Yan Shifan was indeed a way to investigate the emperor's demise.

Upon learning that Chongliming was looking into Dong Lianhai, who had wisely retired to his hometown after the Empress Dowager's death, Zhe Yu instructed Yu Chu to travel to Dong Jiayu to ascertain Chongliming's presence and any new discoveries. At the ancestral graves, just as Chongliming began to unearth Dong Lianhai's grave, Dong Xiao arrived with a group of men. He angrily confronted the cook, accusing him of colluding with Chongliming and viciously beating him.
