Liu Jia prepared water for Xiao Renyan to wash away the bad luck from being in prison. Xiao Renyan held Liu Jia's hand and expressed how fortunate he felt to have met her, believing that fate had destined them to fall in love. Liu Jia was worried that her status would affect Xiao Renyan, but he didn't care and said that he would tell the Emperor everything and they could live happily together.
Liu Jia was shocked to learn that Xiao Renyan was actually working for the Emperor. From Xiao Renyan, she found out that his mother was the Emperor's aunt. Xiao's father was also used by Zhang Yuanqing and Imperial Tutor Meng, which led to his mistakes and ultimately cost him his life. Xiao Renyan believed that Imperial Tutor Meng was too ambitious and that he would eventually find a way to take him down. Liu Jia was worried because the late Emperor favored Imperial Tutor Meng, but Xiao Renyan believed that Zhang Yuanqing would have evidence against him.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yuanqing was still in prison, waiting for Imperial Tutor Meng to come to his rescue. A masked man came and said he was there to take Zhang Yuanqing away, but he turned out to be an assassin. Luckily, Xiao Renyan and Liu Jia arrived in time and saved Zhang Yuanqing's life.
Zhang Yuanqing was shocked to learn that Imperial Tutor Meng wanted him dead. Xiao Renyan told Zhang that he was the only one who could help her now because both Xiao Ming and Imperial Tutor Meng wanted her dead. Zhang Yuanqing stood up and asked Xiao Renyan what he wanted to know. Xiao Renyan wanted to know where the ledger was. Zhang Yuanqing laughed and talked about all the suffering she had endured over the years. She said she would never cooperate with Xiao Renyan, then suddenly, she charged at the wall and died. She had been clutching Imperial Tutor Meng's jade pendant all along. Liu Jia was surprised by Zhang Yuanqing's determination to not give in and they needed to find a suitable place to bury her.
