Fall in You Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Qiao Yan lived in Germany as a student at a Music Academy, dreaming of becoming a violinist. Unbeknownst to her, she was the daughter of the Gu family's eldest son, living a carefree life. As Qiao Yan prepared for an upcoming competition, her parents were involved in a car accident while on their way to pick her up.
She was on the phone with them, heard a disturbance, and rushed to the scene just in time to witness their car explode before her eyes, causing her to faint from shock. Later, Qiao Yan's grandfather, Chairman Gu, learned of the tragedy and traveled to Germany to find her. Having never lived with him, Qiao Yan did not recognize him. She received a house model, her father's only possession left to her, and was confused by its meaning.
On her way home, she sensed someone following her and was subsequently knocked unconscious. When she awoke, her friend Miao was by her side. Qiao Yan quickly checked her bag, finding her money and cards untouched, but the model was gone. She felt deep regret for failing to protect the last thing her father had left her.
During her meeting with Chairman Gu, Qiao Yan finally understood why her family had moved so frequently over the years: her father had insisted on marrying her mother, but Chairman Gu disapproved and nearly caused her mother to miscarry, leading her father to leave the Gu family in anger and never contact them again.
Chairman Gu wished for his son's only bloodline to return to the Gu family, but Qiao Yan refused, explaining that her father had chosen for her to use her mother's surname and never spoke of the Gu family, showing his desire for her to stay away. Reflecting on the recent events, Qiao Yan became convinced that her parents' car accident was no mere accident.
She confided in Miao, sharing that before she lost consciousness during the attack, she saw a scar on the right arm of the person who took the model. Miao told her about a letter she received, stating that Qiao Yan's father, Gu Hai's, death was not an accident and that the murderer was Gu Jingyuan. Together, they researched Gu Jingyuan, learning that Chairman Gu adopted him from a welfare home.
He was an exceptional student in college and rose from an entry-level position to Vice President of Gu's Group in just seven years. Miao also mentioned that he was rumored to be decisive, ruthless, and willing to do anything to achieve his goals. She added that if Chairman Gu hadn't suddenly found Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan would have already been the heir to Gu's Group.
Qiao Yan speculated that Gu Jingyuan might have been responsible for her parents' deaths, motivated by the inheritance. Despite Miao's warnings about the danger, Qiao Yan decided she had to return to Xijiang to investigate the truth and find the house model, believing it held the key. Qiao Yan made her way back to Xijiang and appeared at Gu's Group's annual Appreciation Ceremony.
Gu Jingyuan, having been asked by Chairman Gu to represent him at the ceremony, arrived to a warm reception. Chairman Gu had earlier questioned Gu Jingyuan about Gu Hai's death, which German police ruled an accident. Though Gu Jingyuan offered to investigate further, Chairman Gu dismissed his concern, praising his capabilities before requesting he attend the ceremony in his stead. Gu Jingyuan expressed loyalty, claiming all his actions were for Chairman Gu and the Gu family.
Meanwhile, attendees at the ceremony whispered about Chairman Gu's biological granddaughter and the potential conflict with Gu Jingyuan. The atmosphere shifted when Chairman Gu arrived with Qiao Yan, formally introducing her as his long-lost biological granddaughter and the future heir of Gu's Group, asking everyone to support and look after her. Qiao Yan greeted Gu Jingyuan, calling him "Uncle," and subtly questioned if they had met before, hinting at her suspicions.
Gu Jingyuan acknowledged his regret for not bringing Qiao Yan and her parents back sooner. Later, he told Qiao Yan that Xijiang nights were cold and windy, suggesting she would need to adapt if she planned to stay. Qiao Yan confidently replied that it was her home and she would certainly settle in well.
Upon arriving at the Gu family home, Uncle Xu showed Qiao Yan to her room, pointed out Gu Jingyuan's room, and advised her that he preferred not to be disturbed. Chairman Gu then summoned Gu Jingyuan to his study. Chairman Gu told Gu Jingyuan that Qiao Yan was his biological granddaughter and his only remaining blood relative, stating that he owed her a great deal and intended to compensate her.
Gu Jingyuan, feeling slighted, asked what he was to Chairman Gu. Chairman Gu clarified that Gu Jingyuan was his adopted son who had been by his side for many years. He then instructed Gu Jingyuan to treat Qiao Yan well and, after his passing, to protect her and the Gu family's assets, emphasizing it was his duty as his closest adopted son. Gu Jingyuan acknowledged his instructions and left.
Later, Qiao Yan entered Gu Jingyuan's room, hoping to find evidence while he was away. She didn't find the model but discovered a small safe. She managed to take two quick photos just as she heard Gu Jingyuan's footsteps. In a panic, she hid in the wardrobe. Gu Jingyuan, visibly upset from his conversation with Chairman Gu, slammed his fist into the mirror, startling Qiao Yan and leading to her discovery.
She feigned innocence, claiming she got lost in the large house and hid out of fear when he returned. Gu Jingyuan, unconvinced by her flimsy excuse, demanded to know her true intentions for returning to the Gu family.
Episode 2 Recap
Qiao Yan, discovered hiding in Gu Jingyuan's room, was confronted by him about her intentions for returning to the Gu family. She explained she was simply there to visit her family, as her parents were gone, leaving her alone. She told him that her grandfather had found her and invited her back to the house in Xijiang.
Noticing a bleeding wound on Gu Jingyuan's hand, Qiao Yan offered to bandage it, hoping to confirm if he was the person who stole her father's model. Despite his initial refusal and demand for her to leave, Qiao Yan insisted, threatening to inform her grandfather if he didn't comply. After she finished bandaging his hand, she advised him to be less impulsive.
She reiterated her disinterest in inheriting Gu's Group, asserting she was not competing with him for anything, but had to follow her grandfather's wishes for now. She expressed her intent to clarify her position to her grandfather at an opportune time. Gu Jingyuan questioned why she wouldn't want to inherit Gu's vast assets.
Qiao Yan poignantly replied that no amount of assets could bring back her parents or her home, emphasizing that he and her grandfather were her only remaining family. She urged him to lower his guard and accept her. As she left his room, she glimpsed a scar on his wrist, confirming her suspicion that he was indeed the person who had taken her father's model.
Meanwhile, at Gu's Group, Gu Jingyuan presided over a meeting where an executive, Wang He, presented a poor report on overseas resort projects, which Gu Jingyuan accused of being falsified. Gu Jingyuan sharply warned Wang He about the consequences. Uncle Chen intervened, defending Wang He as a long-time employee and implying Gu Jingyuan’s previous dismissal of Director Zhou was based on flimsy evidence.
Uncle Chen cautioned Gu Jingyuan against alienating veteran employees, suggesting that if he continued, Qiao Yan would have no one to rely on when she took over the company. Gu Jingyuan sarcastically agreed with Uncle Chen's sentimentality, then demoted Wang He to a cashier position before abruptly ending the meeting. Later, Qiao Yan, still suspicious of Gu Jingyuan's motives, asked Miao to create a mini-game.
It required players to input six random digits to open a cute blind box, hoping to uncover a numerical pattern Gu Jingyuan might use as a safe password. She presented the game to her grandfather and Gu Jingyuan, who was reluctant to play. Gu Jingyuan finally participated and, much to Qiao Yan and her grandfather's amusement, received a "bomb" in the game. Qiao Yan then subtly brought up her father's house model to her grandfather and Gu Jingyuan.
Her grandfather recalled the model, believing Qiao Yan had brought it back, only to learn she had lost it. He revealed that Qiao Yan's grandmother, Meifeng, had left a will stating that if Qiao Yan's father returned to the Gu family with the model after her will took effect, he would inherit ten percent of her shares. Qiao Yan realized Gu Jingyuan's actions regarding the model were likely to prevent her from inheriting those shares.
That evening, Qiao Yan celebrated Gu Jingyuan's "birthday," choosing the day he joined the Gu family since he didn't know his actual birth date. She served him red wine, hoping to drug him. However, Gu Jingyuan, having suspected her intentions since her return, feigned intoxication and secretly spilled the wine. Once he appeared to be asleep, Qiao Yan attempted to open his safe.
She tried various combinations before finally guessing the password: the date Gu Jingyuan came to the Gu family. The safe, however, required a fingerprint for final access. As Qiao Yan reached for Gu Jingyuan's hand, he suddenly grabbed her arm, revealing his deception. He admitted he had been aware of her suspicions since her return and was curious to see her capabilities.
Qiao Yan accused him of killing her parents for the inheritance, calling him a villain, but Gu Jingyuan provocatively offered to show her what was in his strongbox. He opened it, revealing a house model engraved with his name, explaining that every Gu child received such a model. Overwhelmed, Qiao Yan left his room. Back in her own room, Qiao Yan felt lost, questioning whether Gu Jingyuan was truly innocent.
She called Miao, who urged her to return, deeming her situation too dangerous. Qiao Yan insisted on staying to uncover the truth, believing that if Gu Jingyuan truly intended her harm, he would reveal a weakness. The next morning, at breakfast, Qiao Yan deliberately sat in Gu Jingyuan's usual seat, engaging him in conversation about her "birthday wishes" for him and their family's unity.
As Gu Jingyuan prepared to leave for work, Qiao Yan requested a ride, using the opportunity to discreetly place a tracking device from Miao in his car. In the car, she challenged him about his apparent guilt. When she suggested he take her to the company, Gu Jingyuan refused, warning her to stay away from company affairs. Qiao Yan theatrically expressed fear of him and exited the car, her goal of placing the tracker achieved.
Following the tracking device's data, Qiao Yan discovered Gu Jingyuan frequently visited Haohua Club. Believing this location held secrets, she strategized that to challenge Gu Jingyuan, who now controlled half of Gu's Group, she needed concrete evidence of his clandestine activities. At the club, she bribed a waiter to stall Gu Jingyuan for five minutes. She then entered Gu Jingyuan's private room, Room 206, and installed a hidden camera.
As she exited the room, she bumped into Gu Jingyuan in the hallway. Thinking quickly, she removed her jacket, let down her hair, and embraced a passing man, Qin Ziyu, whispering for his help, which he provided by playing along. The hidden camera recorded a conversation between Gu Jingyuan and Director Lu Wanqing. They discussed how several shareholders were interested in Gu Jingyuan's proposal, which would weaken her grandfather's influence and that of Uncle Chen, benefiting only themselves.
Lu Wanqing mentioned convincing these shareholders that Gu Jingyuan was determined to take control of Gu's Group and break ties with her grandfather, painting him as unjust. Gu Jingyuan stated, "The bait has been released. Let's just wait for the fish to take the bait."
Qiao Yan showed this video to her grandfather, who then revealed that Gu Jingyuan and Lu Wanqing had grown up together in the same welfare home, and that Gu Jingyuan had later helped Lu Wanqing with her education and career at Gu's Group. Grandpa questioned how Qiao Yan obtained the video. Qiao Yan emphasized that the most important thing was his plan, given Gu Jingyuan's explicit plotting against him and the company.
She told him that everything might change now that she was back, and she expressed her desire to join the company to investigate Gu Jingyuan further. Later that night, Gu Jingyuan visited Qiao Yan's room, returning a hair clip she had lost at the club. He placed it in her hair, warning her not to let him "find out" about her "tricks" again. After he left, Qiao Yan reaffirmed her resolve to expose him.
Episode 3 Recap
Gu Changye took Qiao Yan to the company, where they met Mr. Chen, a founding member of the company who had been with Gu Changye for over 30 years. Gu Changye introduced Qiao Yan, explaining that she was there to learn how to handle company matters. Mr. Chen subtly expressed his thoughts on Gu Jingyuan, noting that while Gu Changye was old and couldn't run the company anymore, Gu Jingyuan was energetic.
Sensing Mr. Chen’s underlying dissatisfaction with Gu Jingyuan, Qiao Yan feigned naivety to probe his opinions. Mr. Chen then took her aside and asked if she was prepared to lead the company, especially concerning her "uncle who is not related by blood," Gu Jingyuan, fearing he wouldn't willingly hand over control. Qiao Yan asserted that Gu's Group belonged to her grandfather and she feared nothing as long as he was there. Mr. Chen promised his full support.
Later, Mr. Chen took Qiao Yan to a routine meeting to introduce her to the directors. Gu Jingyuan was surprised to see her. Qiao Yan clarified that she was there for work, not leisure, intending to join the group and become a qualified heir. Lu Wanqing, a director, immediately challenged her, asking about her overseas major and suggesting she start from a sales position, pointing out that Gu Jingyuan had worked his way up from the bottom.
Qiao Yan admitted her inexperience but confidently stated her intention to learn and become a competent successor to Gu's Group. Just then, Gu Changye entered the room. He explained that he had heard the discussion and proposed a vote by show of hands for Qiao Yan to join the company as an Executive President. With over half of the votes in favor, the proposal passed, making Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan colleagues.
Gu Jingyuan offered her congratulations, which Qiao Yan acknowledged. Qiao Yan quickly found the work challenging, struggling to understand the financial reports. Director Wang brought three years of reports to her desk, encouraging her to be patient and to ask him questions whenever she needed help. He emphasized that as a Gu's Group employee, he was happy to assist. That evening, Gu Jingyuan waited for Qiao Yan on the stairs.
She expressed her fear of the hidden ugliness within the grand house, and that kindness and love might not overcome wicked hearts. Gu Jingyuan then warned her that Gu's Group was far more complex than she imagined and that it was not too late to leave. Qiao Yan, however, was resolute, stating she would not stop and was ready to pay any price.
Director Wang secretly provided Qiao Yan with Gu Jingyuan's account information and transfer records, suggesting that Gu Jingyuan was secretly transferring company assets overseas. Although the amounts seemed small, Director Wang claimed it was just the tip of the iceberg. Qiao Yan questioned his motives, asking if he wanted her help against Gu Jingyuan or if he was being manipulated.
Director Wang stated that his purpose was irrelevant, as their goal was the same: to expose Gu Jingyuan's true nature and prevent him from harming Gu's Group further. He also hinted that Gu Jingyuan might be involved in her parents' death. Director Wang then informed her that Gu Jingyuan had a safe in his office containing the evidence they needed. He reminded her that the shareholders' meeting to elect the new president was approaching.
During the shareholders' meeting, Gu Jingyuan told his father that Qiao Yan had an urgent matter to attend to. As the voting for the new president commenced, Qiao Yan used her Executive President badge to gain access to Gu Jingyuan's office, hoping to find the safe. She quickly found the safe and was relieved to discover it had the same password as her own. Meanwhile, in the meeting, votes were tied between Mr. Chen and Gu Jingyuan.
Gu Jingyuan announced that Mr. De, a long-time shareholder who had been recuperating abroad, was interested in the election and had authorized him to cast his vote. Gu Jingyuan then cast Mr. De's vote for himself, securing his position as the new president. Enraged by his loss, Mr. Chen publicly accused Gu Jingyuan of secretly acquiring Gu's shares and contacting Mr. De to seize the presidency.
Gu Jingyuan admitted to buying shares but countered that Mr. Chen had been secretly shorting the company's stock while Qiao Yan was back, causing the company's stock price to fluctuate. He stated that his purchases were to mitigate the damage Mr. Chen caused. Several other shareholders then confessed that they had been misled by Mr. Chen, and their shares were now under Gu Jingyuan's control. Gu Changye angrily silenced Mr. Chen, stating the company needed a change.
Just then, Qiao Yan entered the meeting room, carrying the evidence she found in Gu Jingyuan’s safe. Mr. Chen, smugly, pointed out that Qiao Yan had the evidence against Gu Jingyuan. However, when Qiao Yan presented the documents, revealing them to be proof of company assets being illegally transferred overseas, Mr. Chen was shocked to find they implicated him, not Gu Jingyuan.
Qiao Yan, realizing the setup, looked at Gu Jingyuan and calmly stated that he had deliberately orchestrated for her to find this evidence. Gu Jingyuan confirmed her suspicion, admitting that he had planned it since she first joined the company, spurred by her relentless pursuit of the truth. Qiao Yan then confronted Mr. Chen, accusing him of having planned everything to lure her back to help him deal with Gu Jingyuan.
As Mr. Chen was asked for evidence against Gu Jingyuan regarding her father's death, he could only claim that everyone believed it. Mr. Chen then lashed out at Gu Jingyuan, calling him "a dog raised by the Gu family" who had no right to Gu's assets. Enraged, Gu Changye ordered the police to be called. In a desperate attempt to escape, Mr. Chen begged, offering to leave Gu's Group.
Gu Jingyuan declared that Mr. Chen's deception regarding his brother's death was unacceptable. Panicked, Mr. Chen screamed that Director Wang was responsible for everything. Suddenly, Director Wang grabbed Qiao Yan, taking her hostage and demanding 50 million. Director Wang dragged Qiao Yan to the underground parking lot, demanding Gu Jingyuan's car. Qiao Yan, remembering the tracker she had placed in Gu Jingyuan's car, subtly signaled him to comply.
Gu Jingyuan understood her meaning and instructed Lin Ze to hand over his car. As Director Wang drove away with Qiao Yan, she cleverly dropped her phone, which was still on a call with Miao, out the window. Miao, quick-witted, immediately informed Gu Jingyuan that Qiao Yan had placed a tracking device in his car and provided the phone's unlock password. Although furious, Gu Jingyuan prioritized Qiao Yan's safety.
He quickly accessed the tracker on his car's system and set off in pursuit, while instructing Lin Ze to call the police and follow him. Director Wang frantically demanded the 50 million transfer within 15 minutes. Qiao Yan attempted to reason with him, urging him to surrender and promising to plead for leniency.
Director Wang, fearing imprisonment, refused and threatened to kill Qiao Yan, ranting about how the rich never treated him as human and how he ended up in such a predicament. He vowed to make Qiao Yan, as Gu Changye's granddaughter, pay the ultimate price. As Director Wang lunged at Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan crashed into his car, rescuing her. Both Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan sustained injuries. Qiao Yan awoke in the hospital, disoriented and hallucinating about her parents.
Gu Jingyuan, by her side, comforted her. Qiao Yan, still confused, questioned why he saved her, suggesting that her death would have made his inheritance of Gu's Group legitimate. Gu Jingyuan then fully confessed. He revealed that he never harmed her parents. Half a year before her grandfather found them, her father had contacted him because Qiao Yan's mother was ill and needed medical funds.
The money he had been transferring overseas, which Mr. Chen used as evidence, was actually for her mother's treatment. Gu Jingyuan explained that he was in Germany when her parents' accident occurred. He had gone there early because their grandfather was about to find them. During a flashback, Qiao Yan's father told Gu Jingyuan he would take his wife, Yuling, and Qiao Yan away, not wanting them to return to the "cage" of the Gu family.
He thanked Gu Jingyuan for taking care of their grandfather and fulfilling his filial duty, stating that the family would depend on Gu Jingyuan from then on. Gu Jingyuan also recalled telling his brother that he noticed someone watching them. Gu Jingyuan revealed he was at the scene of the car explosion and was the one who took the unconscious Qiao Yan to the hospital and rescued her when she was attacked and her model stolen.
He admitted he was protecting her in secret but was still a step too slow. Gu Jingyuan explained that when their father fell ill and the company descended into chaos, he had to return to resolve everything. He had planned to go back to Germany to bring her home after sorting out the company's affairs, unaware that it would lead to such a misunderstanding.
When Qiao Yan asked why he didn't explain sooner, Gu Jingyuan admitted her initial strong defenses and his fear that she wouldn't believe him. More importantly, he was afraid that she would be targeted by the real culprit, so he wanted to uncover the full truth first. He also confessed that his position in Gu's Group was awkward, and many people wanted to profit from her return.
He didn't care what happened to him, but he couldn't allow ill-intentioned individuals to remain close to her and their father. He added that he allowed her to investigate and adapt to the business world, and she had done well. Qiao Yan then asked if he resented her for taking away everything he had worked so hard for.
Gu Jingyuan stated that everything he had done was to be a son his father could be proud of and a qualified heir to Gu's Group. He concluded by saying that if she needed him, he would always be by her side, even if everyone called him "the Gu family's dog." Hearing his sincere confession, Qiao Yan's misunderstandings of him began to fade away.
Episode 4 Recap
Qiao Yan went to the Lotus Cemetery to visit her parents. She confessed her deep regret, admitting she had been wrong to believe Gu Jingyuan was their killer. She felt useless for constantly opposing him despite his secret protection, and now struggled with how to express her gratitude. She questioned what purpose her life held if she couldn't avenge them and find the truth, especially since all leads had gone cold.
Meanwhile, Gu Jingyuan and Gu Changye, his father, couldn't find Qiao Yan at the hospital, and her phone was off, causing them great worry. After checking at home and seeing her family photo on the table, Gu Jingyuan deduced she must have gone to the cemetery. Upon finding her there, he gently draped his coat over her shoulders. He told her she must miss her parents greatly after everything that had happened.
Qiao Yan apologized for having wronged him, to which Gu Jingyuan replied he never took it to heart. He urged her to stop crying, reminding her that life was not solely about hatred, and that even the hardest days would eventually pass. He encouraged her to give herself time to heal and move forward, advising her not to let the car crash define her future.
As it was getting dark, Gu Jingyuan suggested they head home, reminding her that Grandpa was waiting. When Qiao Yan's legs became numb, he carried her to the car. She asked if his arm still hurt, but he dismissed it as a minor scratch. Qiao Yan apologized again, concerned she must have caused his wound to reopen when he carried her.
Gu Jingyuan confessed that he had initially been angry and purposely allowed her to misunderstand, which led to her nearly getting into trouble. Qiao Yan quickly said it was okay, considering they were now even because he had saved her. Gu Jingyuan then shared details of his difficult childhood: being abandoned by his parents, abused by his first foster father, and bullied in the welfare house until the Gu family adopted him.
He revealed that he used to envy her happy family, but then realized that the sudden loss of loved ones was more painful than never having had them at all. Back at the Gu residence, Qiao Yan apologized to Gu Changye for leaving without a word and causing worry. Gu Jingyuan intervened, asking his father not to be angry. Gu Changye assured them he could never be angry with his granddaughter and urged Qiao Yan to rest.
He then called Gu Jingyuan to his study for a private conversation. Before going, Gu Jingyuan instructed Yue, a staff member, to take Qiao Yan upstairs and prepare some ginger soup for her. In the study, Gu Changye expressed frustration that Gu Jingyuan hadn't informed him earlier about the ongoing investigation, fearing for Qiao Yan's safety. Gu Jingyuan apologized and confirmed that both he and Qiao Yan suspected her parents' deaths were not accidental.
He explained that the person who stole the model was likely the mastermind. He clarified that Chen Shi had been cleared by the police and only intended to use Qiao Yan against him, while Wang He was merely seeking money. Gu Jingyuan hypothesized that the true culprit aimed to prevent Qiao Yan from inheriting Gu's Group or sought to maintain the company's existing equity structure and management.
He concluded that the most probable mastermind would be someone wary of Qiao Yan and her father, Hai, inheriting the company. When Gu Changye asked who he thought it was, Gu Jingyuan stated he himself was the most likely suspect. Gu Changye then directly asked Gu Jingyuan if he was the culprit. Gu Jingyuan firmly denied it, and Gu Changye, trusting him, urged him to continue the investigation and report any new leads.
He strictly forbade Qiao Yan from interfering due to the danger involved. Gu Jingyuan reassured his father, explaining his recent actions. He revealed he had already bought back shares from disloyal shareholders who became restless after he pretended to be at odds with Gu Changye over Qiao Yan. With Chen Shi's downfall and the imminent handling of his associates, the company would remain stable, making it a suitable time for Qiao Yan to assume a role.
Gu Changye asked if he was truly willing to hand the company over to Qiao Yan, and Gu Jingyuan replied that it was Gu Changye's company to bestow as he wished. Pleased with his response, Gu Changye acknowledged Gu Jingyuan's hard work and told him to rest. Later, Qiao Yan appeared at Gu Jingyuan's room with a medicine box, intending to change his dressing. She expressed relief that he had explained everything to Gu Changye.
As she tended to his wound, she worried aloud that she had caused his injury to reopen when he carried her earlier, but Gu Jingyuan insisted it didn't hurt. She then asked if Gu Changye had any suspects in mind for her parents' deaths and what his next steps were. Gu Jingyuan promised that they would ensure her parents' deaths would not go unpunished.
However, he made her promise to remain in Xijiang and avoid further involvement until the true murderer was found, urging her to trust him with the investigation. Sometime later, Qiao Yan spoke to Lu Wanqing over the phone, expressing her desire to return to Germany to finish her studies and secretly continue investigating her parents' deaths.
She explained that with Gu Jingyuan cleared of suspicion and her own lack of interest in inheriting Gu's Group, she felt it was the right time to go back. She mentioned the Gu family's concern for her safety, which limited her ability to pursue leads in Xijiang, suggesting that being in Germany would allow her more freedom to find clues. Lu Wanqing questioned if Gu Changye would easily permit her departure.
Qiao Yan admitted her concern, wondering how to convince him. Later, Qiao Yan was seen watering plants, distracted. Gu Jingyuan noticed and asked what was on her mind. Qiao Yan quietly confessed her wish to return to Germany, urging him to keep their conversation discreet from Gu Changye. Gu Jingyuan initially stated his father wouldn't agree and even suggested she should stay.
Qiao Yan asked if he had ever had a dream, and when he confirmed he had but wouldn't share, she called him a "cheapskate." She then revealed her dream of becoming a violinist, emphasizing her reluctance to abandon her studies. She reminded him that it was his encouragement to live on that inspired her to resume her academic pursuits, and that she believed he understood her best in the family.
Gu Jingyuan proposed alternatives, such as transferring to a local music program or even bringing her German professor to Xijiang, highlighting Gu's Group's resources. Qiao Yan dismissed these as unnecessary, reiterating her desire for a simple, ordinary life. Despite the comforts of the Gu household and the affection from Gu Changye and Gu Jingyuan, she felt the place didn't truly belong to her. Seeing her resolve, Gu Jingyuan agreed to try and persuade Gu Changye on her behalf.
At dinner, Qiao Yan subtly brought up Germany by praising Yue for her bread soup and sausages, noting they tasted exactly like those in Germany and remarking that she had already been back from Germany for a month. Gu Changye acknowledged her comment. Qiao Yan then told Gu Changye she had something to tell him, only for him to say he had something to tell her as well.
Gu Changye went first, announcing his invitation to the principal of Xijiang Business University to discuss Qiao Yan's transfer. He insisted she needed to study business to take over Gu's, as playing the violin wouldn't suffice. Qiao Yan immediately objected, asserting she had never intended to inherit Gu's, as her dream was to be a violinist.
She explained that her previous agreement to join the company was based on a misunderstanding of Gu Jingyuan, which had now been resolved, so she should return to Germany. She argued that Gu Changye and Gu Jingyuan were enough for the company, and her lack of business acumen would lead to its downfall. Gu Changye grew angry, declaring he would agree to anything but this. Gu Jingyuan quickly intervened, urging Gu Changye to calm down and respect Qiao Yan's choice.
He assured his father that he had made arrangements in Germany to ensure Qiao Yan would be well cared for. Gu Changye retorted that Gu Jingyuan was sending Qiao Yan away, despite her being safest by his side, and worried they might never see her again. Qiao Yan defended Gu Jingyuan, taking responsibility for asking him to intercede, and accused Gu Changye of driving her father away in a similar manner. Gu Jingyuan again tried to calm his father.
He then appealed to Gu Changye, suggesting that if Qiao Yan's father were alive, he would surely want his daughter to pursue her own passions and live the life she desired, urging Gu Changye to agree for her father's sake. Gu Changye, seemingly swayed, conceded but then shifted his focus back to Gu Jingyuan, stating that if he truly cared about her and her father, he should abandon the company and devote himself to Qiao Yan's care.
Later, Gu Changye had a private conversation with Qiao Yan, warning her to be wary of Gu Jingyuan taking over Gu's Group. He called her naive for not understanding this sooner. He explained that if Gu Jingyuan had no ulterior motives, he would readily relinquish the company and accompany her to Germany. His hesitation, Gu Changye argued, revealed his true ambition.
Qiao Yan attempted to defend Gu Jingyuan, emphasizing that he was family, but Gu Changye reminded her that Gu Jingyuan was only an adopted son, without Gu family blood. He brought up her past suspicion that Gu Jingyuan might have harmed her father for the company, implying that his ambitions could not be trusted. Concurrently, Gu Jingyuan discussed his plans with Lu Wanqing over the phone.
Lu Wanqing was surprised and concerned to learn of his decision to accompany Qiao Yan to Germany, questioning if it was necessary to go to such lengths just to alleviate Gu Changye's concerns. She warned him that once power was relinquished, it was difficult to regain.
Gu Jingyuan calmly explained that being the president of Gu's Group was no longer important to him, and as someone who understood him best, Lu Wanqing should know that his identity remained unchanged regardless of his title. He reminded her that he had fulfilled his promise to take her out of the welfare house, and reiterated that he was not an ambitious person.
Lu Wanqing expressed her concern that he might be wronged, but Gu Jingyuan insisted he was not and that his decision was final, concluding the conversation. Later that night, Qiao Yan found Gu Jingyuan, who seemed to be intoxicated. She questioned his late return and the amount he had drunk, teasing him about his "happiness" leading to such consumption. Gu Jingyuan denied being in a bad mood, insisting he was happy.
Just then, Gu Changye's voice was heard, indicating he had been woken by the noise. Qiao Yan quickly shushed Gu Jingyuan as Gu Changye approached, wondering if he had heard something. He eventually dismissed it as a dream and returned to bed, allowing Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan to avoid discovery.
Episode 5 Recap
When Gu Jingyuan suggests he will resign from his position at the Gu's Group and accompany Qiao Yan back to Germany, Qiao Yan firmly rejects the idea. She insists he must not agree to her grandfather’s request to leave the company. She wants him to stay at Gu's, work diligently, earn money, and support her, as she claims to have no interest in business herself and no one else to rely on.
Gu Jingyuan, surprised by her trust, asks if she truly believes he isn't competing with her for the Gu's Group inheritance. Qiao Yan affirms her trust, noting that if he had ulterior motives, he would have left her to die at Wang He’s hands. Despite this, Qiao Yan reiterates her unwavering resolve to return to Germany.
She explains that while she might have appeared to comply with her grandfather to avoid upsetting him, her life is her own, and she will not compromise on it for anyone. Just as her grandfather couldn't keep her father from his chosen path, he won't be able to deter her from hers. Seeing her determination, Gu Jingyuan insists on accompanying her anyway, reasoning that it would be a much-needed long vacation after years of non-stop work at Gu's.
More importantly, he wants to attend her performances, fulfilling a wish for her deceased parents who never had the chance to see her play. Gu Jingyuan then takes Qiao Yan to the welfare house where he grew up, revealing it as the site of his current dream. He explains that the land was reclaimed by the government five years prior and is now up for public auction, with the Gu's Group participating in the bidding.
He envisions transforming the area into a child-friendly community, complete with an amusement park, a library, and schools, ensuring every child’s desire is fulfilled. He also plans to rebuild a welfare house three times larger than the original to house more children. Qiao Yan is deeply moved by his vision and suggests adding a children's music center, emphasizing music's positive influence on a child's growth.
Gu Jingyuan, seizing the opportunity, asks if she would consider being the "excellent operator" of this music center. Qiao Yan playfully teases him about making her work, but he clarifies that he wants her to be the boss. He proposes that once the bidding is complete, they return in a year to collaboratively realize this dream. Qiao Yan agrees, finding the prospect quite appealing. However, a crisis erupts at Gu's Group.
News reports reveal that Chen Shi, a founding shareholder, has been arrested for embezzlement, and Gu Jingyuan has been forced to resign by the board, causing stock prices to plummet. Reporters speculate that the crisis was orchestrated by competitors, specifically linking Gu Jingyuan's suspension to a "Family Fortune War" following Chairman Gu's announcement of Qiao Yan as his successor.
It is further reported that the Qin's Group, led by Qin Mian, has become Gu's biggest competitor in real estate, vying for the same commercial land. Gu Jingyuan confirms that this turmoil is Qin Mian's doing and that an investigation is already underway. Qiao Yan, realizing the gravity of the situation, advises her grandfather that Gu Jingyuan's departure would only validate the rumors; she suggests he remain at the company to manage the crisis.
While packing for Germany, Qiao Yan receives a call from Miao, who informs her that German police have found clues about the individual who attacked her and stole her belongings. Miao explains that the suspect's abandoned vehicle was discovered, and surveillance footage captured him. Qiao Yan examines the photo sent by Miao; though she doesn't recognize the man, the cigarette he holds matches one she saw at the site where Wang He kidnapped her.
This new lead prompts Qiao Yan to postpone her return to Germany. Later that evening, Qiao Yan, elegantly dressed, accompanies Gu Jingyuan to the Xijiang Businessmen Charity Dinner. Gu Jingyuan had decided to attend despite his assistant's advice to cancel, knowing Qin Mian would be present. Upon arrival, Qin Mian skillfully deflects questions about his alleged involvement in Gu's crisis and the "Family Fortune War," confidently stating his intention to win the land bidding.
When Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan make their entrance, drawing a crowd of reporters, Gu Jingyuan is bombarded with questions about his supposed resignation. Qin Mian subtly challenges Gu Jingyuan by alluding to internal strife within Gu's and questioning Qiao Yan's absence, implying she had already left for Germany due to conflict.
To counter the rumors and present a united front, Qiao Yan steps forward, publicly declaring that she and Gu Jingyuan are family and will "fight together" to manage the Gu's Group, dismissing the sensational "Family Fortune War" narratives as mere drama. Their harmonious appearance confuses Qin Mian and leads some reporters to believe their relationship is genuinely good, while others remain skeptical, convinced it's an act.
Inside the banquet hall, Gu Jingyuan becomes the focus of attention for many wealthy young women, especially He Yue. Visibly displeased by Qiao Yan's presence, He Yue attempts to trip Qiao Yan, but Qiao Yan deftly avoids the trap, causing He Yue to stumble and fall directly into Gu Jingyuan's arms. Qiao Yan quickly excuses herself to get some food.
He Yue feigns injury to keep Gu Jingyuan by her side, while her friend complains that Gu Jingyuan has repeatedly rejected He Yue's invitations. Gu Jingyuan politely explains his busy work schedule, and his assistant intervenes to escort him to a meeting with Mr. Du from Jingong Construction. It is evident that He Yue's romantic overtures towards Gu Jingyuan are unreciprocated. Later, Qiao Yan is approached by Qin Ziyu, who she recognizes.
He introduces himself as Qin Ziyu, mentioning that everyone knows the Gu's heiress has returned. Their conversation is interrupted by Qin Mian, who, upon learning Qiao Yan's identity, notes her use of her mother's surname.
Realizing Qin Ziyu is Qin Mian's son, Qiao Yan attempts to distance herself, but Qin Ziyu follows her, clarifying that he has just returned to the country and is not involved in his father's corporate battles with the Gu's, nor does he condone his father's actions. He expresses a desire for their budding acquaintance not to be affected, though Qiao Yan dismisses any existing "friendship."
As someone plays Brahms's Sonata in D Minor on a violin, Qiao Yan asks if Qin Ziyu enjoys the piece. He reveals his knowledge of its sorrowful origins, composed after Brahms experienced significant personal losses. Qiao Yan offers a more hopeful interpretation, believing the music encapsulates enduring emotions despite death. Qin Ziyu admits that music is merely a hobby for him.
Later, Gu Jingyuan, having observed Qiao Yan conversing with Qin Ziyu, pulls her aside and warns her to be cautious about her new acquaintance, emphasizing Qin Ziyu's identity as Qin Mian's son and the potential for damaging media speculation. Qiao Yan playfully chides Gu Jingyuan for acting like an "old uncle" despite their similar ages. Back inside, He Yue, determined to embarrass Qiao Yan, loudly suggests that Qiao Yan, being a music major, should perform.
The host takes the cue and announces that Qiao Yan will perform for the charity fund. As Gu Jingyuan begins to intervene, Qiao Yan subtly stops him. She confidently walks onto the stage, introduces herself, and expresses her honor to be at the event. She highlights the Gu's Group's commitment to public welfare and expresses her belief that other entrepreneurs share this sense of social responsibility. She hopes her performance will bring everyone health and safety.
As Qiao Yan prepares to play, Gu Jingyuan joins her at the piano, stating that since Qiao Yan is in such good spirits, he will accompany her. Together, they deliver a moving performance of Brahms's Sonata in D Minor. During her performance, Qiao Yan reflects on her lifelong dream of becoming a violinist and her unwavering determination to live life on her own terms.
Witnessing their harmonious performance on television, Qiao Yan's grandfather expresses his satisfaction, noting that Gu Jingyuan proactively supported Qiao Yan, and Qiao Yan publicly affirmed her identity and their unified stance, demonstrating their shared commitment to the Gu family's interests. He expresses hope that Qiao Yan will learn from Gu Jingyuan to become a qualified successor. Later, Qiao Yan asks Gu Jingyuan why he suddenly decided to stay. He reveals he has uncovered new clues regarding the circumstances of her parents' deaths.
Episode 6 Recap
Qiao Yan revealed to Gu Jingyuan that she decided to stay in Xijiang because she had discovered new clues about her parents’ death. The police had identified a suspect, Liang Feng, known as Feng, who had previously left the country and was now in Xijiang. Qiao Yan believed Feng was connected to the person who attacked her in Germany, and therefore, she couldn't leave.
Knowing her grandfather would be suspicious if she suddenly changed her travel plans, she needed a plausible reason to remain. At the airport, she feigned a stomach ache and discreetly approached Gu Jingyuan, asking if he had something to tell her. Gu Jingyuan then publicly declared that she should stay because he needed her. Later, Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan discussed the investigation.
Qiao Yan explained that when she interacted with Wang He, he didn't smoke, but she had found a specific brand of German-made cigarette at the scene of her kidnapping. This, coupled with the fact that Feng had just entered Xijiang, was too much of a coincidence; she was convinced the cigarette belonged to Feng, indicating a connection between Wang He and Feng. She believed Wang He's confession that he kidnapped her on impulse due to financial hardship was a lie.
Gu Jingyuan, worried about her safety, urged her to let him handle the matter, reminding her that as her uncle, he was responsible for her well-being since her parents were gone. However, Qiao Yan insisted on being involved, stating she couldn't stand by when there was a lead on the murderer of her parents. Gu Jingyuan reluctantly agreed, but made her promise to consult him on everything and never act alone.
He warned her that if she broke this promise, he would have Lin Ze send her back to Germany. Qiao Yan agreed, making a pinky promise to protect herself and not act without him. Lin Ze informed Gu Jingyuan that their stock price was recovering following Qiao Yan's appearance at the banquet. He also reported that the source of the rumors was not Qin Mian's company. The news was first published by He Yao, the chief editor of Xijiang Daily.
Lin Ze showed Gu Jingyuan a photo, revealing that Lu Wanqing was the person seen meeting with He Yao. Lu Wanqing later visited Gu Jingyuan, bringing wontons. She reminisced about their childhood at the welfare house, recalling how they used to watch others eat wontons and she would cry from hunger, and how he promised to buy her a whole wonton stall when they grew up. Gu Jingyuan then confronted her, asking why she had spread the rumors.
Lu Wanqing initially feigned ignorance but then admitted she did it to prevent him from leaving for Germany to accompany Qiao Yan. Gu Jingyuan angrily stated that his decisions were his own and she had no right to make choices for him. Lu Wanqing insisted she acted for his own good and apologized, expressing her fear that he would abandon her, reminding him of his promise to always take care of her.
Gu Jingyuan affirmed that he would continue to care for her because they grew up together. However, he sternly stated that the Gu family and the company were his absolute bottom line, and he would not tolerate anyone undermining them. At that moment, Lu Wanqing realized Gu Jingyuan had changed significantly, a transformation she attributed to Qiao Yan's return. Qiao Yan later contacted Gu Jingyuan by phone after witnessing someone give Feng a USB drive.
She informed him that she was following Feng and promised to send him her location. Gu Jingyuan advised her to be careful, wait for him, and not to act alone. Qiao Yan urged her taxi driver to keep close to Feng. She confirmed her location, but when Gu Jingyuan tried to call her back, her phone was off. Gu Jingyuan arrived at the Dashiqiao construction site, where Qiao Yan was being held.
Before entering, he called the police to report a kidnapping. Inside, Qiao Yan, who had cleverly hidden a piece of broken glass she found outside the site, was talking to Feng. She feigned ignorance and offered money, asking why he had kidnapped her. Feng revealed he knew she was following him. Qiao Yan pressed him, asking if he was the one who ordered Wang He to kidnap her.
Feng denied ordering the kidnapping, claiming he had a separate deal with Wang He, and that Wang He's kidnapping of Qiao Yan for money was his own decision. Qiao Yan then accused Feng of being the person who stole her model in Germany, which he didn't deny. As Qiao Yan continued to engage him in conversation, she secretly used the glass shard to cut the ropes binding her hands.
Feng, stating that knowing too much was harmful, told Qiao Yan she was about to die and could ask her parents about it in the afterlife, then attacked her. Just as he lunged, Qiao Yan broke free. Gu Jingyuan burst in, rescuing her. Feng managed to escape, and Gu Jingyuan, prioritizing Qiao Yan's safety, did not pursue him. Qiao Yan immediately told Gu Jingyuan that Feng had admitted someone hired him to kill her parents.
Gu Jingyuan reassured her, expressing relief that she was safe. Shortly after, Lin Ze and Han Miao arrived. Qiao Yan, surprised, asked why they were together. Lin Ze explained that Han Miao had arrived earlier than expected and had seen him at the airport holding a sign with her name on it.
Han Miao had tried to contact Qiao Yan but couldn't reach her, so she grew worried and told Lin Ze to call Gu Jingyuan, leading them to Qiao Yan's location. Han Miao chastised Lin Ze for driving too slowly, saying she had to speed on her rented motorcycle to save Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan. Gu Jingyuan then informed them that the police expected to find Feng soon. Gu Jingyuan was furious with Qiao Yan for acting alone.
He reminded her of their promise, emphasizing the danger she was in and how worried he was about her. Qiao Yan tried to apologize, explaining that she couldn't stand by when Feng suddenly appeared again, and reiterated her trust in him to be there for her. Gu Jingyuan, however, remained resolute.
He told her to pack her belongings, stating that he would arrange for Lin Ze to send her back to Germany in a few days and would explain the situation to her grandfather. Qiao Yan pleaded with him, begging for forgiveness and refusing to leave, but Gu Jingyuan was unyielding. The next morning, Qiao Yan attempted to greet him, calling him a "cheapskate" when he ignored her.
During breakfast, she tried to subtly persuade her grandfather to intervene by telling a story about a "watermelon" who made a mistake and a "soup dumpling" family member who refused to forgive it, describing the "soup dumpling" as petty. Her grandfather responded that family should always be tolerant. As Gu Jingyuan left for work, Qiao Yan followed, continuing to press him for forgiveness. He demanded she promise to return to Germany. She refused, citing the ongoing search for Feng.
Gu Jingyuan then threatened to tell her grandfather about her dangerous solo investigation. He seized her phone and installed a tracking device, warning her that if she left the predefined safe zones for more than thirty minutes, she would immediately be sent back to Germany. Qiao Yan accused him of restricting her freedom, to which he retorted that she had previously put a tracker on his car. Qiao Yan called him a "petty soup dumpling."
Later, Qiao Yan confided in Han Miao, expressing her frustration with Gu Jingyuan's stubbornness. Han Miao jokingly reminded Qiao Yan that she was dealing with a billionaire CEO, not just an ordinary man. Han Miao also explained why she was staying at Lin Ze's place. She mentioned that the hotel was too expensive, and she didn't want to owe the Gu family for her accommodation.
Since Lin Ze needed money and had a spare room, and as an employee of Gu's Group he was trustworthy, it was the perfect arrangement. When Qiao Yan offered to pay her rent as a token of thanks for her trip back to China, Han Miao accepted, also mentioning that she had taken on some coding projects to expand into the domestic market.
Han Miao then told Qiao Yan about an online relationship coach who offered tips for coaxing lovers, suggesting it might work on Gu Jingyuan, even though he was an "elder" in terms of their power dynamic. Desperate to stay in China and continue her investigation, Qiao Yan decided it was worth a try and asked Han Miao to share the advice.
Episode 7 Recap
In Xijiang, a widespread apology message from "Watermelon Boss" to "Steamed Bun" dominated all taxi advertising. Gu Jingyuan, hearing the repeated announcements in his car, realized Qiao Yan was the "Watermelon Boss," making him the "Steamed Bun." He was annoyed by this public display, finding it more of a threat than an apology. During a phone call, Qiao Yan confessed to using his card to pay for the ads.
She attempted to persuade him not to send her back to Germany, reasoning that if he exposed their secret investigation into the car accident to his grandfather, both of them would face repercussions and be "rolled out of Xijiang." Gu Jingyuan, seeking to counter Qiao Yan's move, tried to lease the taxi ad spots himself but discovered Qiao Yan had already secured them for an entire month, preventing him from doing so.
Gu Jingyuan took Qiao Yan to a land bidding, where Qin Mian was confident of his company's success. Prior to the bidding, Qin Mian had arranged for a man named Feng to obtain internal bidding information and other business secrets from the wife of a man named Wang He. Qin Mian then advised Feng via phone to flee Xijiang as the police were tracking him, promising to arrange his departure from the country once the immediate danger passed.
During the bidding, both Qin's Group and Gu's Group were selected for the final round. The judging panel noted Qin's Group presented a commercial shopping mall concept, while Gu's Group proposed a novel, semi-public-benefit-oriented "children-friendly community." Finding both plans excellent but with individual flaws, the judges called for a new, decisive round of bidding between the two. Following the initial bidding results, Qiao Yan sought out Lu Wanqing, Gu's Group's architectural design director.
Qiao Yan expressed her desire to alleviate the judges' concerns about Gu's Group venturing into semi-public welfare projects, as their previous work had been exclusively commercial. Lu Wanqing initially stated she wouldn't help Qiao Yan directly but agreed to assist Gu Jingyuan, given her role at the company. Qiao Yan asked Lu Wanqing to keep their collaboration a secret from Gu Jingyuan, and Lu Wanqing consented.
Unbeknownst to Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan was aware of Qiao Yan frequently visiting Lu Wanqing, as Lin Ze informed him, though he respected their privacy. He instructed Lin Ze to deliver meals to them while they worked late. After days of intense work, Qiao Yan finally revealed her project to Gu Jingyuan: a meticulously crafted model of the children's community, designed with Lu Wanqing's help.
Qiao Yan explained her plan to transform the upcoming press conference into an immersive "experiential Parent-Child Day" to showcase the community. She then invited Gu Jingyuan to be the "first big child" to experience it, leading him into a large pit of ocean balls. As they played, Qiao Yan brought up Gu Jingyuan's childhood, revealing that Lu Wanqing had told her he loved ocean balls as a child but never had the chance to play with them.
Qiao Yan shared her father's belief that a person who doesn't fulfill childhood wishes grows up in vain. Gu Jingyuan thanked her for helping him achieve this childhood dream. Qiao Yan also presented him with a caricature of him smiling, encouraging him to smile more. Later, Qiao Yan confirmed that the taxi advertising had been removed and asked Gu Jingyuan if he would forgive her and not send her back to Germany.
After a moment of thought, Gu Jingyuan relented and told her he forgave her, much to Qiao Yan's delight. Qiao Yan presented the official Parent-Child Day experience plan to Gu Jingyuan. The plan included offering free admission to all visiting families, highlighting Gu's Group's commitment to "human care" beyond just economic value. She also intended to live-stream the event to showcase the children's experiences and invite public oversight.
Gu Jingyuan approved the plan but stressed the importance of safety, directing Lin Ze to rigorously inspect fire safety and catering services. Confident in their success, Qiao Yan declared they would defeat Qin Mian. Soon after, Gu Jingyuan received news that Feng had been apprehended while attempting to flee the country.
In a phone call with a police officer, Qiao Yan learned that during the pursuit, Feng was involved in a car accident, sustaining severe head trauma and falling into a coma, though he was out of life danger. Qiao Yan expressed concern that if Feng didn't wake up, the true culprit behind the car accident (which had affected her parents) might never be identified. Gu Jingyuan reassured her that justice would prevail and criminals would be punished.
Meanwhile, an elder of the Gu family expressed to Gu Jingyuan's grandfather that Gu Jingyuan was not involved in any wrongdoing, citing his repeated efforts to protect Qiao Yan, and that Qiao Yan was astute in her judgment. The grandfather stated he had largely relinquished control of the company to Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan, hoping they would not disappoint him. The Parent-Child Day event began smoothly, with families enjoying the activities.
Qiao Yan was seen interacting kindly with a little girl named Xixi, giving her a small red flower. However, the atmosphere quickly soured when several children, including Xixi, reported stomachaches and began to vomit after eating the provided cake. Parents erupted in anger, accusing Gu's Group of serving unclean or expired food and causing food poisoning. Qin Mian, who was observing the live stream of the event, smirked triumphantly. The affected children were promptly taken to the hospital.
Doctors confirmed it was food poisoning, caused by expired nuts found in the cake. Lin Ze, who had personally overseen the food safety checks, insisted the ingredients were fresh, leading Gu Jingyuan to suspect sabotage. He instructed Lin Ze to thoroughly investigate the kitchen staff. The incident rapidly escalated, becoming a trending topic online, and Lin Ze received a call from the public relations department.
Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan went to the hospital to check on the children and apologize to the parents. However, the furious parents refused to listen, accusing Gu's Group of only showing concern because the incident was trending, and forcibly drove Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan out of the hospital room. As they were leaving, Qin Mian appeared, stating, "We've met again," implying his involvement in the incident.
Episode 8 Recap
He Wei, identifying himself as the father of Gu Jingyuan, the President of Gu's Group, publicly reported his son for favoring the rich, being ungrateful, and refusing to provide for him. He presented "evidence," claiming that after Gu Jingyuan's mother died, Gu Jingyuan, then known as He Yuan, deemed their family too poor and ran to a welfare house, falsely claiming to be an orphan.
He was subsequently adopted by Chairman Gu and, according to He Wei, refused to acknowledge him as his father, neglecting him for years. He Wei even accused Gu Jingyuan of using children for a bidding process, stating he couldn't let him harm others, reinforcing his alleged paternal claim. Gu Jingyuan, surrounded by reporters pressing him about the Parent-Child Day incident, flashed back to his childhood.
He recalled being falsely accused of stealing, called a "bastard child," and brutally beaten by He Wei, who encouraged others to join in. Later, Gu Jingyuan confronted He Wei. He Wei mockingly welcomed his "President son" and demanded to be called "Dad." Gu Jingyuan questioned why He Wei lied about never seeking him out, as he only ever sought money.
He Wei confirmed his true intent was to "destroy" Gu Jingyuan because he "didn't make him happy," and he insulted Gu Jingyuan's mother, regretting his birth, reiterating that Gu Jingyuan was an unwanted "bastard child." Gu Jingyuan retorted, calling He Wei a villain and rejecting a life constantly overshadowed by childhood trauma. In response, He Wei revealed a shocking truth: Gu Jingyuan's mother, Luo Qian, was alive, and he had deliberately lied about her death.
He then threatened Luo Qian's life to manipulate Gu Jingyuan, showing photos of her in the hospital as proof, daring Gu Jingyuan to risk her safety. Gu Jingyuan, shaken, questioned why he should trust He Wei. Qiao Yan sought out Lu Wanqing to discuss He Wei. Lu Wanqing confirmed that the matter deeply distressed Gu Jingyuan and revealed He Wei was not Gu Jingyuan's biological father, but simply married his mother.
She described He Wei as a scoundrel and habitual thief who, when drunk, would violently beat people. Whenever his own thefts were discovered, He Wei would force Gu Jingyuan to be the scapegoat, leading to frequent beatings. Consequently, Gu Jingyuan stopped defending himself against accusations because no one ever believed him. Despite Lu Wanqing's advice to leave him alone, Qiao Yan felt Gu Jingyuan desperately needed someone to find him and share his sadness and grievances.
She searched for him, calling out, until she found him curled up. She hugged him. He unconvincingly claimed to be fine, but Qiao Yan insisted he was not. She offered her shoulder for him to cry, or to help him fight He Wei, which he initially dismissed, stating it was "none of her business." Qiao Yan, however, recognized his contradictory behavior—making noise to be found but refusing to respond, hoping for her support but pushing her away.
She asserted her understanding, claiming to hear his unspoken plea for her help, and directly told him she had heard his true feelings. Gu Jingyuan thanked Qiao Yan, though he jokingly called her a fool. He speculated that He Wei's actions, initially seeming to be only about money, were more serious because they had escalated to sabotaging their event and slandering him, suggesting a connection to the bidding process.
He admitted to previously suspecting Qin Mian and believed He Wei could be a key to uncovering the truth, but also acknowledged his reluctance to face He Wei again. Qiao Yan reassured him, promising to handle the matter. Meanwhile, Chairman Gu, enraged by He Wei's repeated challenges and public demand for Gu Jingyuan to confront him in a live stream, had already prepared strong evidence to counter He Wei.
Qiao Yan, upon learning of the public confrontation, volunteered to represent Gu Jingyuan in the live stream. She reviewed the comprehensive evidence provided by Chairman Gu, who encouraged her to proceed, even offering to shut down the live stream if she faced difficulties. At the "Xiaobai Interview," the host noted Gu Jingyuan's absence, prompting He Wei to express a desire for Gu Jingyuan to show "conscience." Qiao Yan then made an unexpected appearance, declaring her intent to reveal the truth.
She publicly stated that He Wei was merely Gu Jingyuan's foster father, who had never acted responsibly, only abusing him, despite Gu Jingyuan never refusing to provide for him. When He Wei accused her of slandering him and demanded proof, Qiao Yan produced two official documents. One was a police report from 2003 detailing He Wei's drunken assault on a young He Yuan, pushing him onto broken glass, resulting in five stitches.
The second was a welfare house record, showing He Yuan arrived there with signs of long-term abuse. It also revealed He Wei had tried to extort money from the welfare house before abandoning He Yuan there permanently. He Wei tried to justify his actions, claiming he was disciplining Gu Jingyuan to prevent him from stealing, and then presented an apology letter signed by a young Gu Jingyuan, implying his guilt.
Qiao Yan immediately accused him of forcing Gu Jingyuan to sign it and challenged his credibility, especially as He Wei began falsely linking Gu Jingyuan to the Parent-Child Day poisoning. As online comments turned against Gu Jingyuan, He Wei gloated, asserting that public opinion was the truth. Qiao Yan, enraged, accused He Wei of treating Gu Jingyuan as an emotional punching bag and using cyberbullying against him for personal gain, questioning his humanity.
He Wei retaliated by attempting to throw water at Qiao Yan, but Gu Jingyuan suddenly arrived, shielding her. Gu Jingyuan produced an old tape recorder, explaining it contained evidence he took when he ran away from He Wei's abuse at eight. He played a recording that revealed He Wei was the true thief and brutally forced a young Gu Jingyuan to sign a false apology letter, threatening him with violence. He Wei frantically claimed the recording was fake.
Gu Jingyuan declared he would submit the recording for authentication and publicly release full investigation results for both the Parent-Child Day incident and the bidding scandal. He then addressed the live stream audience directly, asserting that the Gu family was his true family, regardless of public labels like "the Gu family's dog," because they gave him a home. He concluded with a stark warning: anyone who slandered his family or Gu's Group online would face legal action.
With that, he took Qiao Yan's hand and departed, ignoring the host's protests. Elsewhere, Gu Jingyuan's capabilities were noted by opponents. One of them explained his aggressive focus on Gu's Group and the real estate market was to prevent them from monopolizing the industry and to secure his son's future, stressing the importance of relentlessly pursuing competitors.
Back at the Gu family home, Chairman Gu had prepared hot pot to celebrate, calling for two old bottles of wine specifically saved since Gu Jingyuan joined the family. During dinner, Chairman Gu expressed his deep affection for Gu Jingyuan, treating him as his own son, and promised the Gu family would always be his steadfast support. Qiao Yan lightheartedly complained about Chairman Gu favoring Gu Jingyuan with food, prompting him to offer her some too.
Gu Jingyuan reassured Chairman Gu that he would successfully resolve the Parent-Child Day incident and secure the land for the bidding. As the meal continued, Gu Jingyuan gently warned Qiao Yan about the wine's potency. Qiao Yan playfully dismissed his concern, though she subtly noted her rapidly beating heart, questioning if she was truly intoxicated. The atmosphere between Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan remained subtly warm and affectionate.
Episode 9 Recap
Qiao Yan watched a video clip of Gu Jingyuan protecting her, which had become a hot topic online. As she recalled the moments they had shared, her heart began to race. Unsure of the cause, she suspected a heart problem. Her friend, Miao, suggested she see a doctor, but Qiao Yan decided to observe it further. Meanwhile, Gu Jingyuan continued his investigation into the children's food poisoning incident.
He remembered seeing Jiang Jun, the purchasing manager, accepting money from a man in a car. Suspecting foul play, he instructed Lin Ze to investigate Jiang Jun while he pursued He Wei. Gu Jingyuan was then deliberately bumped into by the same man he saw with Jiang Jun, but he couldn't catch him. He confronted He Wei, who revealed he had been hired to slander Gu Jingyuan but was never fully paid, and was now being threatened to keep silent.
Under pressure, He Wei confessed that the man's name was Zhu Ming, an employee of Qin's Group. Gu Jingyuan then confronted Qin Mian, revealing dashcam footage that clearly showed Zhu Ming bribing Jiang Jun. Qin Mian, who had been planning to discreetly transfer Zhu Ming to avoid exposure, was caught off guard as Gu Jingyuan had already reported the evidence to the police.
Qin Mian tried to distance himself from Zhu Ming's actions, claiming they were personal and not representative of Qin's Group. He even tried to manipulate Gu Jingyuan, suggesting they team up to take over Gu's Group and bringing up Gu Jingyuan's mother, Luo Qian. Qin Mian revealed that Luo Qian was alive and that he knew why she abandoned Gu Jingyuan and who his biological father was.
Their conversation was interrupted by Qin Ziyu, who was shocked to learn of his father's involvement and questioned his relentless vendetta against the Gu family. Qin Mian dismissed him, telling him to stay away from the company. Later, Qin Mian held a press conference, publicly blaming Zhu Ming and announcing his termination, but the incident caused Qin Real Estate to lose a major bid and suffer a significant blow to its reputation.
Lin Ze reported back to Gu Jingyuan that they had found no trace of Luo Qian in Xijiang, and He Wei had also disappeared. Later, Qiao Yan attended a performance at a small theater, where she encountered Qin Ziyu. He revealed he had acquired the theater specifically to invite her to perform there, believing her talent should not be wasted. That night, Qiao Yan met Gu Jingyuan at the theater and played the piano for him.
Gu Jingyuan opened up about his past trauma, admitting that Qiao Yan's unwavering support had given him new strength, making him realize he would not let anyone harm those he cared about. As they talked, a security guard approached. Qiao Yan quickly pulled Gu Jingyuan into hiding, and in the close proximity, her heart raced once more.
Recalling Miao's earlier observation that she had "fallen for Gu Jingyuan," she confessed her feelings to him and leaned in for a kiss, but Gu Jingyuan subtly evaded her. The moment left them both deeply embarrassed. Qiao Yan, flustered, later called Miao, admitting she had confessed to Gu Jingyuan and worrying he would think she was a "pervert" especially after his response was to transfer her money.
Miao reassured her that her feelings were natural, given they were not blood-related and only a few years apart. However, Qiao Yan dismissed her feelings as mere "confusion" due to recent events, stating she needed to focus on finding her parents' killer. The next morning, Gu Jingyuan was still at home when Qiao Yan returned. He called her out to talk.
To alleviate the awkwardness, Qiao Yan playfully suggested that since he was only five years older, she would call him "Gu Jingyuan" instead of "uncle" and that they should be best friends. She then attempted to explain her attempted kiss as a common "greeting ritual" from abroad, trying to demonstrate it again. However, Gu Jingyuan stopped her, maintaining that he saw her as family and an elder figure, and did not want her to misunderstand his care. Calling him a "cheapskate," Qiao Yan then walked away, embarrassed. Gu Jingyuan watched her leave, a fond smile slowly appearing on his face.
Episode 10 Recap
Gu Jingyuan had been deliberately avoiding Qiao Yan, even turning away from his home after seeing her message and claiming he was working overtime, though Qiao Yan had already spotted his car. For some time, he rarely ate at home. He had a terse conversation with a woman who congratulated him on acquiring land and for making her design director. She asked if he was still angry with her and if they were still best friends.
Gu Jingyuan responded that she would always be his good sister and he would never forget that she saved his life. When she invited him to dinner, he declined, explaining that he had promised Qiao Yan and his father to eat at home more often. As he left, she wistfully remarked, "Ah Yuan Ge Ge, how can you have a home?"
Later, Qiao Yan confided in her friend, Miao, that she felt she had "messed things up" and Gu Jingyuan was now avoiding her. Miao tried to comfort her, but Qiao Yan expressed her distress over her first experience of liking someone turning out this way, adding that she truly didn't want him to hate her. Miao suggested they maintain their distance, believing they would both eventually move on.
A young family member also noted Gu Jingyuan's absence, asking if he was avoiding them due to a joke from the day before, while Qiao Yan, speaking to herself, declared, "Gu Jingyuan, I don't want to call you uncle anymore." Meanwhile, Qin Mian arranged an interview with a Xijiang Daily reporter to restore Qin's reputation. He claimed that an employee, Zhu Ming, was solely responsible for the malicious competition incident, and Qin's was completely unaware.
He stressed that the competition between Qin's and Gu's was purely business. To further mend public perception, Qin Mian asserted that the Qin and Gu families maintained private connections, highlighting Qiao Yan and his son, Qin Ziyu, as close friends who frequently gathered. He even offered to invite the newspaper to their next family get-together. Following this public declaration, Qin Mian formally invited the Gu family to a dinner.
Gu Jingyuan initially intended to just make a brief appearance, but Gu Changye insisted on attending. Gu Changye believed that Qin's entry into the real estate market was specifically aimed at the Gu family, indicating a deeper conflict than mere business rivalry. As the Gu family arrived, Qin Mian had reporters ready, eagerly capturing photos of both families to showcase their supposed harmony. Gu Jingyuan urged Qin Mian to let them go inside, citing his father's health.
Inside, Qin Mian attempted to offer Gu Changye dessert, but Gu Changye politely declined, stating he had something important to discuss in private. Qin Mian suggested they move to his study. Gu Changye, ensuring Qiao Yan stayed behind, brought only Gu Jingyuan with him. Qin Ziyu remained with Qiao Yan, and to prevent her from being bored, he took her to listen to his collection of vinyl records.
While listening, Qin Ziyu shared that his mother, who had passed away shortly after his birth, also loved the violin. Qiao Yan comforted him, assuring him that his mother would have cherished him as the greatest gift in her life. Qin Ziyu then playfully suggested Qiao Yan open a psychological clinic due to her insightful words, and once again invited her to perform at his venue.
In the study, Gu Changye directly confronted Qin Mian, acknowledging Qin Mian's long-held belief that Gu's was responsible for his father's suicide during Gu's debt crisis in the securities market. Gu Changye clarified that while Gu's faced its own crisis and couldn't pay suppliers on time, they offered compensation. He stated that Qin Mian's father had taken out a massive loan, which ultimately led to the tragedy.
Gu Changye expressed understanding for Qin Mian's past resentment but conveyed his disappointment if Qin Mian was still solely focused on revenge. Qin Mian denied any such intentions, reiterating that their business competition was purely professional and expressing his desire for the families to make peace and collaborate for mutual development. Gu Changye then voiced his renewed suspicions, referencing the accidental deaths of his son and daughter-in-law months prior, and Qiao Yan's repeated close calls.
He pointed out the mysterious theft of a unique model that only the Gu family could use, questioning the motive if it wasn't an act of revenge. Qin Mian offered no explanation for these events, claiming ignorance. Excusing herself to use the restroom, Qiao Yan overheard parts of their conversation from the study door. When Qin Ziyu called out to her, she quickly ducked into a nearby room, which she discovered was an art studio.
There, she found a paintbrush engraved with her mother's name, "Yu," stirring confusion and a painful memory of her mother. After the tense conversation, Qin Mian escorted Gu Changye and Gu Jingyuan out of the study. He then turned to enter the art studio. Qiao Yan, still hidden, spotted a hair clip she had personally crafted for her mother as a birthday gift, confirming her mother's belongings were indeed in Qin Mian's possession.
Just as Qin Mian was about to discover her, Gu Jingyuan cleverly created a distraction by deliberately knocking over and breaking a vase, drawing Qin Mian's attention. Gu Jingyuan quickly apologized, claiming he found the vase beautiful and had accidentally dropped it, offering to pay for the damage. Qin Mian dismissed it as insignificant but advised Gu Jingyuan to be more careful with others' property. The distraction allowed Qiao Yan to escape unnoticed.
Qin Ziyu eventually found Qiao Yan in the garden, asking where she had been. Qiao Yan fabricated a story about needing fresh air due to boredom, which Qin Ziyu accepted without suspicion, though he mentioned that his father's art studio was off-limits. Later, back at home, Gu Jingyuan privately confronted Qiao Yan, who, in a tearful confession, revealed everything she had discovered. She was now convinced that Qin Mian was responsible for her parents' deaths.
Gu Jingyuan, understanding Qin Mian's cunning and dangerous nature, cautioned Qiao Yan against any rash actions. He emphasized the need for careful planning and warned her not to betray her suspicions, fearing that Qin Mian would retaliate against her. Unbeknownst to them, Qin Mian was in his art studio, gazing at a photograph of Gu Hai's wife, Yuling.
He spoke softly to the image, expressing regret, "I never should have let you go, and given Gu Hai the chance to take advantage. Yuling, don't blame me." This revealed a deep, personal connection and long-held resentment that fueled his actions.
Episode 11 Recap
Qiao Yan decided to perform at Qin Ziyu's small theater, but despite her efforts to control her emotions, she found it difficult to act as if nothing had happened. Gu Jingyuan had cautioned her earlier not to show any unusual behavior, fearing Qin Mian might harm her. Qin Ziyu was overjoyed by Qiao Yan's agreement to perform and had even designed a poster for her, praising her courage to return to the stage after losing her parents.
Feeling a bit nervous about performing after a long break, Qiao Yan agreed when Qin Ziyu suggested they stop practicing and celebrate his birthday. At a restaurant familiar to Qin Ziyu, the owner, an old acquaintance, was delighted to see him bring a girl for his birthday, jokingly suggesting she was his girlfriend. Qiao Yan quickly clarified she was not. The owner took a polaroid of them, commenting on what a "perfect match" they made.
Qin Ziyu explained that the owner always teased him. Qiao Yan learned that Qin Ziyu's mother used to bring him to this restaurant for his birthdays until she passed away, and that Qin Mian never joined them, always being too busy. Their birthday celebration was interrupted by a group of rich acquaintances who taunted Qiao Yan for associating with "stepsons" and "adopted sons." They mocked Qin Ziyu for being banned from his father's company after returning from abroad.
One of them revealed that Qin Mian was a live-in son-in-law who amassed his fortune through Song Xinyue of the Song family, implying Qin Ziyu was not his biological son. They further insinuated that Qin Mian, referred to as Qin Ziyu's "stepdad," considered Qin Ziyu a "bastard" and was planning to expel him from the family. Enraged, Qin Ziyu punched one of the provocateurs.
When another tried to retaliate, Qiao Yan grabbed the birthday cake and pressed it onto his face. She then declared her identity as Gu Changye's granddaughter and Gu Jingyuan's niece, daring them to touch her. Fearing the powerful Gu family, the group retreated. After they left, Qin Ziyu confided in Qiao Yan that his mother was already pregnant with him before marrying Qin Mian, and his biological father had abandoned them.
His mother, unwilling to abort, eventually married Qin Mian as arranged by her family. Qin Ziyu added that Qin Mian had treated him as his only son, making him feel loved and content. Back home, Qin Ziyu was greeted by Qin Mian, who had prepared a birthday feast, including chicken soup and longevity noodles.
Qin Mian told his son he was getting old and needed Qin Ziyu to take over the company after his concert, stressing that he started the business with Qin Ziyu's mother's inheritance from the Song family. He affectionately called Qin Ziyu his son and implored him to protect everything he passed down. Qin Mian also expressed disappointment that Qin Ziyu hadn't invited him to the concert, especially since the Gu family would be attending.
He warned Qin Ziyu to stay away from Qiao Yan and the Gu family, especially Gu Jingyuan, who was fiercely protective of his "fake niece" and could cause trouble. Qin Ziyu, however, admitted he found Qiao Yan interesting and genuinely liked her. Meanwhile, Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan put their plan into motion.
In the hospital, Feng, Qin Mian's accomplice, managed to escape by knocking out a doctor and changing clothes, a ruse that Qin Mian's surveilling men promptly reported to him. Qin Mian then received a phone call from Feng, who threatened to expose Qin Mian's order to commit murder if he didn't provide money and a fake identity for his escape. Qin Mian, feigning cooperation, agreed to meet Feng backstage at Qin Ziyu's small theater, secretly intending to eliminate him.
However, when Qin Mian arrived, he found Gu Jingyuan, disguised as Feng and using a voice simulator. Gu Jingyuan revealed the deception, explaining that Feng had refused to confess his crimes, but a nurse monitoring Feng had been arrested and confessed to acting under Qin Mian's orders. To force Qin Mian's confession, they had staged the phone call.
Qin Mian, realizing he had been entrapped, initially tried to deny knowing Feng, but Gu Jingyuan played a recording of Qin Mian's earlier conversation with "Feng." Gu Jingyuan then directly accused Qin Mian of never letting go of his hatred for the Gu family, resentful that Gu Hai took away his former lover, Qiao Yuling, and thus ordering Feng to cause a car accident to kill them both.
Qin Mian initially dismissed it as speculation, but when Qin Ziyu arrived and urged him to explain the misunderstanding, Qin Mian finally confessed, "I killed them." The police immediately moved in to arrest him. Gu Jingyuan confronted Qin Mian about killing Gu Hai, who had been estranged from the Gu family for decades. Qin Mian defiantly claimed Gu Hai deserved to die, not only for being a Gu but also for "stealing my Yuling from me."
Qiao Yan furiously interjected, telling Qin Mian he had no right to utter her mother's name, asserting that her parents' love was strong and he was never mentioned in their happy family. Qin Mian insisted he and Yuling were in love, and Gu Hai had taken advantage of a temporary separation.
Gu Jingyuan countered that Qin Mian's "disagreement" with Qiao Yuling was merely a pretext, as he was marrying Song Xinyue for the Song family's fortune, questioning why he would involve innocent people in his selfish choices. Qiao Yan further condemned Qin Mian's "fake" and "dirty" love, calling it an insult to her mother and branding him a "lunatic" for killing the one he claimed to love. She told him to spend the rest of his life atoning.
Qin Ziyu, heartbroken, asked Qin Mian if he had ever truly loved his mother. Qin Mian replied, "I failed her," before turning to Qin Ziyu one last time. He reminded his son to remember his words and to "live well," entrusting the Qin family business entirely to him as the police led him away. Overwhelmed by the revelations, Qiao Yan fell ill. Gu Jingyuan tenderly cared for her, explaining she had caught a cold and developed a fever.
Qiao Yan, distraught and crying, reminisced about her parents' loving care when she was sick as a child, confessing how much she missed them. She then tearfully pleaded with Gu Jingyuan not to hate her for being disobedient, telling him she didn't want to lose him. Gu Jingyuan comforted her, reassuring her that he didn't hate her and would always be there, just as her parents would always be watching over her.
Gu Changye entered, witnessing their close embrace, and in his heart, he questioned their relationship, realizing it was no longer a simple uncle-niece bond. Gu Changye, after checking on Qiao Yan, asked Gu Jingyuan to return home and arranged for Yue to stay with Qiao Yan overnight instead. Gu Jingyuan agreed, instructing Qiao Yan to drink her porridge and take her medicine.
Episode 12 Recap
Following Qin Mian's imprisonment, Qin Ziyu entered a painting room, recalling childhood gossip from housemaids who claimed Mr. Qin never loved his wife, but married her for family wealth, and that the room contained paintings of his old lover, Yuling. Young Qin Ziyu had once tried to burn those paintings, declaring he didn't want "bad people's stuff" in his home, which enraged Qin Mian and led to a confrontation where his mother intervened.
Later, on the day of Qin Mian's arrest, Qin Ziyu confronted him, asking if he had ever truly loved his mother. Qin Mian confessed that Yuling was the "only woman" he had ever loved. Qin Ziyu then asked if Qin Mian had ever loved him, to which Qin Mian remained silent.
Though Qin Mian had previously told Qin Ziyu that he would always be his beloved son and entrusted the Qin company to him, he offered no answer when Qin Ziyu repeated his question about whether he truly loved him. Qin Ziyu, in a long-overdue outburst, then proceeded to smash the contents of the painting room.
Gu Jingyuan had been deliberately avoiding Qiao Yan, even turning away from home when he saw her messages, claiming to be working late despite Qiao Yan spotting his car. Qiao Yan had been feeling unwell and confined to her room. One evening, Gu Changfeng, pleased with Gu's Group's success, urged Gu Jingyuan to consider marriage. Gu Jingyuan expressed no immediate plans, citing the new project.
Gu Changfeng then proposed a strategic alliance with the He family, highlighting He Yue's admiration for Gu Jingyuan and the benefits of such a union, adding that both marriage and career are important. Suspecting Gu Jingyuan might have someone else in mind, Gu Changfeng watched him closely. Gu Jingyuan, glancing at a visibly distressed Qiao Yan, denied having any romantic interest. Gu Changfeng then insisted on inviting the He family over.
Later that night, Qiao Yan confronted Gu Jingyuan, asking about his intentions regarding He Yue. Gu Jingyuan reassured her, stating he would not marry He Yue because he knew Qiao Yan disliked her, and he would choose a sister-in-law who could get along with her. Qiao Yan, deeply hurt, questioned if his concern was merely due to his role as her uncle and pressed him about her previous confession of feelings.
Gu Jingyuan repeatedly cut her off, refusing to let her continue, which solidified Qiao Yan's understanding of his stance. Tearfully, she declared she wouldn't trouble him further, calling him "Uncle" before returning to her room. Gu Jingyuan watched her leave, expressing his internal conflict—he wanted her by his side but felt compelled to push her away.
The He family arrived at the Gu residence, and He Yue immediately engaged in outwardly affectionate behavior with Gu Jingyuan, which deeply upset Qiao Yan. Although she initially wanted to avoid dinner, Gu Changfeng insisted she join to "advise" on her uncle's future wife. At the dinner table, Qiao Yan remained visibly unhappy. Gu Changfeng directed Gu Jingyuan to peel shrimp for He Yue, which he did with mechanical obedience, though his attention remained fixed on Qiao Yan.
When Mr. He inquired about Qiao Yan's preferred type of man, suggesting a musician, Qiao Yan stated she didn't like musicians. She then gave a remarkably detailed description of her ideal man: someone quiet, cold, fierce, unapproachable, sneaky, sharp-tongued, yet childish and deeply soft-hearted, who remembers all his responsibilities and promises, appearing instantly when needed, always showing his strong side but silently enduring much sadness and misunderstanding for those he cares about.
Gu Changfeng recognized this as a description of Gu Jingyuan, and the He family also understood the implication. After peeling the shrimp, Gu Jingyuan instinctively offered them to Qiao Yan, much to He Yue's fury and Gu Changfeng's embarrassment, who quickly downplayed it as an uncle's affection for his niece. Qiao Yan, having barely eaten, excused herself. Gu Changfeng instructed Gu Jingyuan to remain and entertain He Yue. After excusing herself from dinner, Qiao Yan retreated to her room.
From her window, she overheard Gu Jingyuan and He Yue conversing in the garden. She then closed her window and began playing the violin. He Yue expressed to Gu Jingyuan that in their affluent circles, love was absent in marriage, which was more accurately an "alliance" for family cooperation. Despite this, she admitted to genuinely liking him and offered him everything of the He family if they married, arguing it was better than being "the Gu family's dog."
Gu Jingyuan countered that if he could protect the Gu family, he didn't mind being called a dog. He Yue, realizing the depth of his feelings, pointedly stated that he had fallen for Qiao Yan, reminding him of their familial relationship and Gu Changfeng's likely disapproval. Gu Jingyuan curtly dismissed her, saying his matters were his own and excusing himself. He then walked to Qiao Yan's room, looking at her with evident pain and tenderness.
Gu Jingyuan attempted to confront Gu Changfeng, but his father angrily interrupted him, calling him "shameless" for considering a relationship with his niece and declaring him unworthy of the Gu family name. Gu Changfeng emphasized Gu Jingyuan's responsibility as the head of the company to uphold the Gu family's reputation, warning him that some truths were best left unsaid because "it's wrong if you say it out loud."
Later, Gu Changfeng informed Qiao Yan that he had agreed to let her return to Germany to complete her studies and intended to accompany her himself. Qiao Yan, feeling conflicted, asked for time to consider. Gu Changfeng, fully aware of her feelings, stated explicitly that he would never permit her and Gu Jingyuan to be together.
Gu Jingyuan's assistant informed him that a strategic partnership signing ceremony between Gu's and He's Group was scheduled, where his engagement to He Yue would be publicly announced. Rumors quickly spread throughout the company about the impending engagement, leaving employees to wonder about Lu Wanqing's fate, who they had expected to become "Mrs. Gu."
Upon hearing the news, Lu Wanqing was enraged, vehemently stating that Gu Jingyuan could never like a woman like He Yue and vowing to prevent Gu Changfeng from using him for a business alliance as long as she was around. Qiao Yan spent several evenings out with her friend Miao, but despite Miao's attempts to cheer her up, Qiao Yan remained unhappy.
She expressed her frustration, lamenting that Gu Jingyuan was a "coward" and seemed not to like her, despite her efforts. During one such outing, they found Qin Ziyu severely inebriated. At the hospital, the medical staff diagnosed him with moderate alcohol intoxication. When Miao suggested contacting Qin Ziyu's family, Qiao Yan revealed he had none.
She sent Miao home, insisting on staying by Qin Ziyu's side, explaining that she wanted to speak with him once he woke up, adding that she didn't blame him and felt he shouldn't have ended up in such a state. As Qiao Yan sat with Qin Ziyu, he briefly woke and muttered "Dad." Tearfully, Qiao Yan apologized, told him she missed him, and pleaded, "Don't go." The next morning, Qiao Yan's landlord inquired about her late nights with Miao.
Miao playfully suggested that Qiao Yan was "in love," much to the landlord's surprise. The landlord quickly reported to Gu Jingyuan that Qiao Yan was "in love." Gu Jingyuan immediately tried to call Qiao Yan, but her phone was unreachable.
Episode 13 Recap
Qiao Yan accompanied Qin Ziyu, who had too much to drink, and bought him breakfast (wontons). Having stayed out all night, Qiao Yan returned home to a worried Gu Jingyuan, who had waited up for her. He asked her where she had been, and though she lied about staying at a friend's, Gu Jingyuan pressed her, citing his concern as her uncle who had promised her father to keep her safe.
Qiao Yan, after a sarcastic thank you, retorted that she was no longer a child and didn't need an elder's excessive concern. Meanwhile, Qin Ziyu had checked into the Will Hotel to avoid his company. He arranged to meet Qiao Yan there, intending to return a painting that had belonged to her mother. Lu Wanqing, however, discovered their messages and secretly forwarded the information to Gu Jingyuan, who immediately rushed to the Will Hotel.
At the hotel, Qiao Yan declined to take the painting, explaining that her connection with her mother was not dependent on a material object and that her mother's art should circulate freely in the market. Qin Ziyu shared his decision to go abroad to manage his finances, vowing to leave his aimless past behind and reclaim Qin's company. As Qiao Yan exited the room, Qin Ziyu embraced her, expressing a desire to tell her something important.
This emotional moment was witnessed by Gu Jingyuan, who called out Qiao Yan's name before forcefully pushing Qin Ziyu away. Qin Ziyu tried to explain that it was a misunderstanding, but Gu Jingyuan ignored him, angrily accusing Qiao Yan of being childish and betraying her parents' memory by associating with Qin Ziyu. Gu Jingyuan then pulled Qiao Yan away. Qiao Yan struggled, feeling Gu Jingyuan was behaving irrationally.
She declared that her personal relationships were none of his business, even suggesting Qin Ziyu was a good prospect, and that they should each go their separate ways and marry others, cutting ties completely. Enraged by her words, Gu Jingyuan kissed her passionately, confessing that he no longer wanted to be her "Uncle." They continued to kiss, unaware that Lu Wanqing was watching from below.
Lu Wanqing returned to her company office, heartbroken and in tears, having seen Gu Jingyuan kiss Qiao Yan. She lamented, "Why Qiao Yan?" and felt abandoned by her "Ah Yuan ge ge." That evening, Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan arrived home. Knowing they needed to act as if nothing had happened, they both decided to take another stroll around the house. During their walk, they reflected on their first meeting, feeling like a newly in-love couple.
Gu Jingyuan joked about how he initially saw her as an enemy, a "poor little cat with sharp claws." They also playfully discussed when they each realized their feelings. They were then caught by Moon Sister, who saw their intimate actions. Gu Jingyuan quickly explained it was because sand had gotten into his eye, and Qiao Yan was helping him blow it out. Moon Sister playfully suggested that Qiao Yan had brought a boyfriend home.
Back home, Gu Jingyuan went into Qiao Yan's room, where they were being affectionate. Qiao Yan's Grandpa (Gu Changfeng) came to bring her fruit, but she took a while to open the locked door, making him anxious. Qiao Yan had wanted Gu Jingyuan to hide, but finding no suitable spot, they pretended to be listening to music together before she opened the door.
Grandpa, seeing them together, felt it was highly improper for an uncle to be in his niece's room at night, especially with the door locked, and worried about what others would say. After giving Qiao Yan the fruit and telling her to rest early, he implicitly told Gu Jingyuan it was time to leave. Gu Jingyuan reluctantly left Qiao Yan's room. Later that night, Gu Jingyuan secretly slipped back into Qiao Yan's room, and they lay together in her bed.
The next day, Gu Jingyuan proactively approached his father (Qiao Yan's Grandpa), Gu Changfeng, declaring his intention to permanently relinquish his shares in Gu's company solely to be with the person he loved. His father was furious. Gu Jingyuan confessed his love for Qiao Yan, pleading with his father not to take her away. However, Gu Changfeng worried that once their relationship was publicly exposed, it would bring immense harm to Qiao Yan due to uncontrollable public opinion.
He then informed Gu Jingyuan that the signing ceremony with the He family was scheduled for the next day, and he would announce Gu Jingyuan's engagement to He Yue at the event.
Episode 14 Recap
Gu Changfeng took Qiao Yan to choose clothes for the upcoming signing ceremony between Gu's Group and He's Group. However, Qiao Yan was not in the mood, burdened by thoughts of Gu Jingyuan's impending engagement. While shopping, someone suggested she call Gu Jingyuan to ask about the engagement, accusing him of "two-timing" and being a "scumbag." Qiao Yan clarified that she wasn't worried about his loyalty, as she knew he wouldn't truly get engaged.
Instead, she feared he might resort to self-harm to resolve the issue, and that her grandfather would become even angrier. She stressed that the recent improvement in her grandfather's relationship with Gu Jingyuan couldn't be jeopardized because of her, and she declared her willingness to be "the bad guy." At the signing ceremony, after the strategic cooperation agreement between Gu's Group and He's Group was officially signed, He Yue and Gu Jingyuan made their entrance.
Just as He Yue's father began to announce their engagement, He Yue dramatically interrupted, publicly declaring that she would not marry Gu Jingyuan and that the engagement was canceled. She firmly stated that the He's Group and Gu's Group would absolutely "never form an alliance through marriage." This unexpected turn surprised Qiao Yan. Back home, Qiao Yan questioned Gu Jingyuan about his actions, admitting she had planned to "make a scene at the press conference" herself.
Gu Jingyuan explained that he had "threatened" He Yue with photos of her and her boyfriend. He had given her an ultimatum: either she voluntarily canceled the engagement and put the blame on him, or he would release the photos, making her the "guilty party" after the engagement. Cornered, He Yue chose to cancel. Qiao Yan playfully remarked that Miss He was a "role model," to which Gu Jingyuan asked if she wanted to emulate her.
Qiao Yan smiled, stating, "It's enough to have an uncle." Their intimate moment was interrupted when Gu Changfeng arrived, scolding them for their public display and summoning them to his study. Inside the study, Gu Changfeng angrily demanded to know who was responsible for He Yue breaking off the engagement. Gu Jingyuan admitted it was him, promising to apologize to Mr. He and accept all consequences.
Gu Changfeng threatened him, but Gu Jingyuan remained firm, declaring his unwavering commitment to Qiao Yan. Qiao Yan stepped forward, accepting blame and clarifying that she initiated her feelings for Gu Jingyuan. She emphasized that they were not blood relatives, so their love was not wrong, and she didn't care about external opinions. Her only desire was her grandfather's support and understanding. Gu Changfeng questioned if they could guarantee they would never separate, expressing concern for the family's stability.
Gu Jingyuan firmly promised they would "never be apart" and announced his intention to "marry Yan." This declaration triggered a painful memory for Gu Changfeng, as he recalled Gu Hai making an identical promise to Qiao Yuling in the very same room. Qiao Yan reinforced her stance, referencing her parents' story: even though Grandpa prevented her father from being with her mother, her father loved her mother his entire life.
Qiao Yan vowed that if Grandpa didn't agree now, she, too, would "never give up," just like her father. Overwhelmed with emotion, Gu Changfeng collapsed, prompting cries of alarm from both Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan. Gu Changfeng was rushed to the hospital. Later, Xu, an employee, informed Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan that Gu Changfeng's condition had stabilized, primarily due to emotional distress.
Xu advised them to go home, as Gu Changfeng was resting and preferred not to see them, warning that defying him would only worsen his anger. Gu Jingyuan sent Qiao Yan home, promising to return to the hospital to care for his father. Qiao Yan, blaming herself, was comforted by Gu Jingyuan, who assured her he would ensure their father accepted their relationship.
Qiao Yan then shared that her parents had taught her that true love endures all difficulties, making it shine brighter. Gu Jingyuan apologized for the hardships she faced and expressed gratitude for her presence in his life. The next morning, Gu Changfeng awoke and was furious to find Gu Jingyuan by his bedside. He demanded Gu Jingyuan leave, stating he didn't want to see him.
Gu Jingyuan pressed him on what he could do to earn forgiveness, to which Gu Changfeng replied, "Leave Qiao Yan." Gu Jingyuan firmly refused. When Gu Changfeng threatened him, Gu Jingyuan cleverly urged him to take his medicine, quipping that if Gu Changfeng were to "collapse," both "Qiao Yan and the company will be mine," implying he'd take over everything. Gu Changfeng, spurred by this, took his medication.
Gu Jingyuan then left for the office, promising to return that night, leaving Xu to accompany his father. Later, Gu Changfeng complained to Xu about Gu Jingyuan's "arrogance," but Xu remarked that Gu Jingyuan's words "made sense." Shortly after, Qiao Yan arrived with a freshly made soup. Gu Changfeng initially refused, claiming no appetite. Qiao Yan offered the soup to Xu, which prompted Gu Changfeng to take it and drink it himself.
He then demanded that if Qiao Yan were truly filial, she should break up with Gu Jingyuan immediately. He reiterated his refusal to accept their relationship, threatening to disown her. He also expressed that her feelings for Gu Jingyuan might stem from gratitude for his support during her parents' tragic death, not true love, suggesting a separation might help her forget him. He even offered to stop interfering in her life and company inheritance if she complied.
Qiao Yan steadfastly declared her love for Gu Jingyuan was genuine, not born of dependence or gratitude. She refused to treat love as a transaction and vowed not to choose between her grandfather and Gu Jingyuan, asserting she would lose neither of them. With that, she left, promising to return the next day. Xu then gently advised Gu Changfeng to reconsider, noting that both Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan were "serious" about each other.
He drew a parallel between Qiao Yan's temperament and Gu Hai's, suggesting it would be better to let "young people pursue their own happiness" rather than "separating this couple" and repeating past tragedies. Qiao Yan later visited Gu Jingyuan at his office, bringing him food as he had been working tirelessly, dividing his time between the company and the hospital. She expressed concern for his well-being, reminding him of her grandfather's continued strong opposition to their relationship.
The couple shared an intimate moment, kissing by the elevator, which was observed by Lin Ze, Gu Jingyuan's assistant, and subsequently by Lu Wanqing. As Qiao Yan departed, Gu Jingyuan walked her out, reminding her to take care of himself, and she, in turn, made him promise to eat properly. Shortly after Qiao Yan left, Lu Wanqing confronted Gu Jingyuan, questioning his relationship with Qiao Yan and if she was the reason he rejected He Yue.
Gu Jingyuan confirmed his love for Qiao Yan. Lu Wanqing, distressed, questioned how he could date Qiao Yan, his "brother's daughter," and pleaded with him not to abandon her, confessing her deep love for him, which transcended sibling affection. Gu Jingyuan apologized for any past misunderstandings, clarifying that he had always seen her as a sister, and unequivocally stated, "The person I love is Qiao Yan."
A flashback revealed a shared childhood memory at an orphanage, where a young Gu Jingyuan protected a young Lu Wanqing from bullies and gave her a necklace, promising it would help him find her in the future. Heartbroken, Lu Wanqing recalled that memory and asked if he was happy. Consumed by anger, Lu Wanqing sent information about Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan's relationship to He Yue.
Seizing the opportunity for revenge, He Yue quickly published the story online and mobilized "troll armies" to "keep spreading" the news, determined to "ruin their reputation." The next day, news headlines exploded with the "forbidden love" scandal, detailing how Gu Jingyuan, Vice President of Gu's Group, was involved with Qiao Yan, Chairman Gu's granddaughter, highlighting their "uncle and niece" relationship.
The media speculated whether Gu Jingyuan's intentions were genuine or driven by self-interest, given Qiao Yan was the sole heir, and questioned if He Yue's engagement cancellation was due to discovering this "incestuous relationship." Qiao Yan became the target of public outrage, branded as a "mistress" who had ruined Gu Jingyuan's prior engagement.
When Qiao Yan went to the hospital to visit her grandfather, she was immediately surrounded by an angry crowd, who filmed her with their phones, shouting insults and accusing her of following her parents' path of "elopement" and being a "mistress" with a "coquettish look." Gu Jingyuan arrived to protect her, pushing through the crowd and demanding they "step aside."
Episode 15 Recap
Qiao Yan's leg was injured, and Gu Jingyuan, full of remorse, carefully tended to her wound. He apologized, acknowledging that he had promised to protect her from harm but had failed. Qiao Yan, however, did not blame him. She expressed that in a relationship, they should face everything together, sharing both happiness and sorrow, rather than letting him bear all the pain and burdens alone.
Meanwhile, Gu Changfeng, having seen the news about their troubles, left the hospital and returned home. He initially expressed anger at Gu Jingyuan for failing to protect Qiao Yan from public scrutiny. Gu Changfeng explained that he had opposed their relationship anticipating the public backlash.
However, after hearing Qiao Yan confess her deep and evolving love for Gu Jingyuan, from seeing him as a reliable family member to developing expectations and a desire for a shared future, and realizing their genuine affection, he understood further opposition was futile. Gu Jingyuan then informed his father of his decision to hold a press conference, where he planned to declare his intention to give up his status as an adopted son of the Gu family.
He also declared that he would marry Qiao Yan no matter what, even if it meant marrying into her family or keeping their marriage private. Later, Lu Wanqing met Qiao Yan at a club, confessing that she was the one who gave the video to He Yue. She claimed her intention was not malicious, but rather a desperate attempt to force Gu Changfeng to accept their relationship, believing that a public scandal might make him soften his stance.
When Gu Jingyuan arrived, he expressed his disapproval of Lu Wanqing's meddling, as he worried about Qiao Yan's well-being. Lu Wanqing explained that she considered Gu Jingyuan family and would do anything to help him achieve his desires. Despite Gu Jingyuan's anger, Qiao Yan later reassured him that she did not blame Lu Wanqing, thinking that her drastic action might actually change Gu Changfeng's mind. Gu Jingyuan then led Qiao Yan away from the club.
Gu Jingyuan took Qiao Yan to Xijiang's most beautiful spot, a place he visited whenever he needed to clear his head. There, he pulled out a ring and proposed to Qiao Yan. He confessed that he initially saw her as family, lively and adorable, but after all their shared experiences, he felt a deep care for her, and his feelings deepened into love and a strong desire to protect her from any harm.
He envisioned spending every moment of their future together, watching over and guarding her. Acknowledging that it wasn't a perfect proposal, lacking flowers, ceremony, or blessings, he emphasized that it was just them, and that was all that mattered. Qiao Yan, deeply moved, accepted his proposal. The next day, reporters swarmed the company building, eager for answers. As Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan arrived, they were bombarded with questions about their relationship. Just then, Gu Changfeng emerged from the building.
To everyone's surprise, he publicly confirmed the romantic relationship between his adopted son, Gu Jingyuan, and his granddaughter, Qiao Yan, announcing that they would soon be married. Gu Jingyuan then stepped forward and, to Qiao Yan's astonishment, declared that he was giving up his status as an adopted son of the Gu family. This decision, it turned out, had been discussed with Gu Changfeng beforehand, kept secret from Qiao Yan to prevent her from worrying.
Gu Jingyuan explained that by relinquishing his adopted son status, he hoped to dispel any external speculation and protect Qiao Yan from public scrutiny, while asserting that regardless of his formal title, they would always remain a family. Gu Changfeng then gave his heartfelt blessing to their union. Overseas, Qin Ziyu saw the news reports from Xijiang about Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan's relationship. Alarmed, he immediately booked a flight back home.
Upon his return, he witnessed Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan sharing a kiss at their wedding, realizing he was too late. However, seeing Lu Wanqing nearby, Qin Ziyu observed her expressions and recognized her deep affection for Gu Jingyuan, sparking a new idea in his mind.
Episode 16 Recap
On their wedding night, Qiao Yan felt overwhelmed with nervousness. She called Miao for advice, who lightheartedly suggested she shouldn't be so tense and encouraged her to have some wine, quoting, "Alcohol makes a coward bold." Although Qiao Yan initially protested, calling herself no coward, she found a bottle of wine. Unbeknownst to her, Lin Ze was nearby.
He had unintentionally overheard Miao's words and, while on his phone, commented to himself about Gu Jingyuan's previous encounter with Qiao Yan in the office. Qiao Yan drank the whole bottle. When Gu Jingyuan emerged from his shower, he found Qiao Yan already quite tipsy, much to his amusement and slight exasperation. He called her "Yan Yan" and expressed his joy that they were finally married.
Qiao Yan, in her inebriated state, tried to drink more, proudly declaring that "nothing but alcohol flows in her veins." When Gu Jingyuan attempted to get her water, she stopped him, boldly complimented his physique, and even referred to him as "Little Uncle," a nickname he immediately asked her to cease. She then possessively told him, "Gu Jingyuan, you are mine now."
Gu Jingyuan, looking at her with affection, reassured her with a vow, "No matter now or in the future, I'll always be yours. . . I will protect you no matter how dangerous or difficult it is. . . as long as you want it, I'll bring it to you." Qiao Yan then sleepily mumbled her desires and had intended to kiss Gu Jingyuan before drifting off to sleep as the alcohol took effect.
The next morning, Qiao Yan woke up disoriented, asking Gu Jingyuan why he was in her room before recalling they were married. When he asked if she remembered anything from the previous night, she quickly retreated to the bathroom, instructing him to get her some honey water. In the bathroom, she had vivid flashbacks of her drunken declarations, including her boast about having "nothing but alcohol" in her veins and her bold move to touch him.
Mortified, she realized the extent of her actions on their wedding night. Gu Jingyuan later brought her honey water, playfully calling her "Goddess of Alcohol." Qiao Yan apologized profusely for drinking too much, explaining that Miao had told her "alcohol makes a coward bold." Gu Jingyuan chuckled at her explanation, then playfully asked how she intended to "make up for our wedding night yesterday."
Qiao Yan responded by kissing him, but their moment was abruptly interrupted when old Mr. Gu, Yue, and Uncle Xu unexpectedly entered the room. Old Mr. Gu remarked on their late start, while Yue announced breakfast was ready. The three quickly retreated, leaving Qiao Yan to chastise Gu Jingyuan for not locking the door. Downstairs for breakfast, Qiao Yan greeted old Mr. Gu as "Grandpa," while Gu Jingyuan addressed him as "Dad."
Old Mr. Gu inquired if they planned to maintain these titles. Qiao Yan playfully offered to call him "Dad" as well, and Gu Jingyuan expressed his happiness to be his grandson-in-law. Old Mr. Gu ultimately decided they should continue with their usual address and urged them to eat. During breakfast, Gu Jingyuan gently advised Qiao Yan, the "Goddess of Alcohol," to be kind to her stomach after the previous night's drinking.
Qiao Yan, in turn, teased him, asking if he was more concerned about her stomach or about her inability to "make it up to him." Gu Jingyuan blushed, much to her amusement. Their affectionate banter prompted old Mr. Gu to interject, reminding them to "find a proper occasion to show your intimacy" and complaining about feeling like a "third wheel."
He then lamented that Gu Jingyuan had "taken away his granddaughter" and Qiao Yan had "taken away his son," leaving him feeling alone. Qiao Yan playfully accused him of being jealous. To appease him, she charmingly explained that she had brought him a grandson-in-law, and Gu Jingyuan had brought him a daughter-in-law, calling it "keeping the good fortune within the family." Old Mr. Gu was delighted by her sweet words and told them to continue eating.
Before heading to the company, Gu Jingyuan discussed with old Mr. Gu his plan to resign from his position, now that he was no longer an adopted son of the Gu family, to prevent any gossip. He suggested that Qiao Yan, being intelligent and capable, could take over the company, and he would assist her. Qiao Yan, however, quickly objected, pointing out her lack of experience and inability to even read a balance sheet.
She reminded Gu Jingyuan of their pre-marriage agreement: "You make money and I spend it." Old Mr. Gu intervened, stating that he would no longer meddle in their affairs and looked forward to having grandchildren, advising them to handle matters as adults.
At the company, as Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan arrived for a meeting with senior executives, some of the staff expressed concerns about Qiao Yan's inexperience and the possibility of Gu Jingyuan leaving, fearing the company would be left without strong leadership. Qiao Yan, addressing the executives, acknowledged their worries regarding Gu Jingyuan's potential departure. She firmly assured them that Gu Jingyuan's position at the Gu's Group "won't change."
She clarified that although he had relinquished his adopted son status, he remained her husband and therefore "still a member of the Gu family." Qiao Yan declared that she would "focus on taking care of my grandpa at home," entrusting Gu Jingyuan to "forge ahead with developing the Gu's Group" with their collective effort.
She also stated that as the heiress, she would utilize this period to "learn the business of the company" and urged everyone to offer their "full support." The executives responded with pledges of support and expressed confidence in the company's future with both of them. That evening, Qiao Yan, hoping to recreate their wedding night, prepared a romantic setting with candles in their bedroom.
She called Miao to confirm her plans, assuring her she wouldn't drink too much this time and would wait for Gu Jingyuan to enjoy the night together. She then texted Gu Jingyuan, who was working late, asking if he was still busy. He initially replied that he would be home late and she should sleep first, but quickly followed up with a message saying he would "be right back."
Meanwhile, Lu Wanqing arrived at Gu Jingyuan's office to deliver a wedding gift. She made it clear she wouldn't take much of his time, knowing he was eager to return to his "newlywed wife." After congratulating him, she stated that his apparent happiness made her "not regret not taking you away from her." Lu Wanqing then revealed that Qin Ziyu liked Qiao Yan and had asked for her help to "make you break up," cautioning Gu Jingyuan to "be careful."
(An earlier conversation between Qin Ziyu and Lu Wanqing had shown Qin Ziyu confessing his love for Qiao Yan despite his father's role in her parents' death, and his determination not to give her up, trying to form an alliance with Lu Wanqing. ) Lu Wanqing then asked Gu Jingyuan for a hug, clarifying that she meant nothing more by it. Gu Jingyuan, ever the gentleman, obliged, telling her, "One day, you will find your Mr. Right."
Just as they were embracing, Qiao Yan arrived at the office. Seeing them, Gu Jingyuan immediately tried to reassure her, saying, "I'm here to take you home. Don't be jealous." Lu Wanqing quickly added that she was merely congratulating "Brother Yuan" on his marriage and had brought a gift. Qiao Yan, however, responded with a sarcastic remark, "Why would Yan Yan be jealous? Why did you come in person?"
Gu Jingyuan expressed that he missed her, and Qiao Yan echoed the sentiment. Seizing the opportunity while holding his arm, Qiao Yan fiercely pinched Gu Jingyuan's arm. Lu Wanqing, clearly uncomfortable, declared, "If you want to be intimate, go home first. Think about me. I don't want to see this. Bye!" and promptly left. Qiao Yan, seething, also stormed out, with Gu Jingyuan quickly following after her, calling her name.
Episode 17 Recap
Gu Jingyuan hurried after Qiao Yan, who was upset and jealous. When he caught up with her at home, he found the bedroom elaborately decorated, understanding that Qiao Yan wanted to make up for their missed wedding night. He tried to explain the situation with Lu Wanqing, but Qiao Yan sarcastically remarked that his wine was not as good as "Wan's wine" and that he was "your dear Wan's Yuan," pretending to be sleepy and dismissive.
Gu Jingyuan realized her jealousy, and Qiao Yan then admitted she was "especially good at being jealous" and "extremely fierce" when she was. Gu Jingyuan then embraced and kissed her, and Qiao Yan, knowing nothing would happen between him and Lu Wanqing, allowed him to coax her. She then suggested it was time to make up for their wedding night, and they reconciled, successfully making up for their previous disappointment. Meanwhile, Qin Ziyu was in a state of distress.
He heard a recorded message from Qin Mian, telling him that he saw what Ziyu was hiding and would take all the blame, assuring him he was always his beloved son. Looking at a photo of Qiao Yan, Qin Ziyu lamented, "Why didn't you wait for me? Just like your mother didn't wait for my dad back then. All because of Gu Jingyuan!"
He confided in a picture of Qin Mian, stating he finally understood his father's desperate desire for Qiao Yuling. Qin Ziyu then called one of his men, ordering him to kill Gu Hai, with an initial reminder not to hurt Yuling. His trusted subordinate, Ah Feng, later confirmed that Gu Jingyuan was also seen with Gu Hai, which piqued Qin Ziyu's interest.
Excited, Qin Ziyu declared he couldn't wait to start his game, vowing to reclaim Qiao Yan and make Gu Jingyuan suffer the pain of loss. While out shopping with Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan spotted his stepfather moving items into a car in the garage. He had Lin Ze investigate the car's license plate. After dropping Qiao Yan home, Gu Jingyuan received the car's location from Lin Ze and followed it to the sanatorium.
There, he found his mother, Luo Qian, who was singing a lullaby and looking at an old photograph. Luo Qian, with a somewhat disjointed memory, recognized him as her son, embracing him. Gu Jingyuan, emotional, questioned where she had been all these years, as he had been led to believe she was dead. He then asked who the man in the photograph was, and Luo Qian revealed that he was his father.
Overwhelmed, Gu Jingyuan cried out in disbelief, denying it. Soon after, his stepfather appeared, confirming Gu Jingyuan's suspicion that he had been deliberately led there. His stepfather disclosed that Qin Ziyu was behind it. Qin Ziyu then appeared, greeting Gu Jingyuan as "Brother." Gu Jingyuan accused Qin Ziyu of fabricating a lie for revenge because he had sent Qin Mian to prison.
Qin Ziyu scoffed, explaining that Luo Qian had been in the sanatorium for twenty years, making it impossible to coerce her into lying. He insisted that Gu Jingyuan was Qin Mian's illegitimate son and was simply unwilling to admit it. Gu Jingyuan demanded proof. His stepfather then revealed the full story: Luo Qian met Qin Mian at a ball, secretly became pregnant, but Qin Mian, who was already engaged to Miss Song, abandoned her.
To give the child a home and to gain some benefits, he married Luo Qian, only for Qin Mian to refuse payment, break his leg, and forbid him from ever speaking of it, denying the "bastard" son. Qin Ziyu then taunted Gu Jingyuan, acknowledging their shared status as "bastards" and "good brothers," but questioned if Gu Jingyuan felt any guilt for imprisoning his own biological father. Gu Jingyuan maintained that Qin Mian brought his fate upon himself.
Qin Ziyu further provoked Gu Jingyuan, asking if he hated him for being Qin Mian's only acknowledged son and if he felt like killing him. Gu Jingyuan, however, stated he had no interest in their father-son matters. Qin Ziyu then threatened to expose Gu Jingyuan's true identity to the Gu family, warning that Gu Changfeng and Qiao Yan might believe he conspired with Qin Mian to kill Gu Hai and married Qiao Yan for ulterior motives.
Gu Jingyuan demanded to know what Qin Ziyu wanted. Qin Ziyu's condition for keeping the secret was simple: Gu Jingyuan had to divorce Qiao Yan, because, Qin Ziyu declared, Qiao Yan belonged to him. Gu Jingyuan was left in a profound state of uncertainty, grappling with the revelation of his parentage. The secret threatened to shatter his relationship with Qiao Yan, as he was now the son of the man who murdered her parents.
He feared losing Qiao Yan forever, haunted by Qin Ziyu's threats and Qiao Yan's past anguish over the truth about Qin Mian. That evening, Gu Jingyuan returned home, his mind heavy with these revelations, to find Qiao Yan asleep on the sofa. She woke up, greeted him, and offered him the steamed buns she had bought, but he declined, citing more work.
He told her not to wait up for him, despite her affectionate plea that he needed to balance work and rest, and that she needed him. After Qiao Yan went to bed, Gu Jingyuan remained awake throughout the night, wrestling with the impossible choice of whether to reveal the devastating truth to her, remembering vividly the pain she endured when she first learned Qin Mian was the killer.
He silently wondered how he could ever tell Qiao Yan and Gu Changfeng about his true identity. Earlier, Gu Jingyuan had given Lu Wanqing a custom-made necklace, which he now knew was left by his biological father. He tasked Lin Ze with investigating the necklace, and Lin Ze confirmed that its unique button belonged to Qin Mian, solidifying the connection. Sensing Gu Jingyuan was troubled, Lu Wanqing visited him.
Though he tried to dismiss her concerns, she pressed on, revealing that Qin Ziyu had approached her again about separating him and Qiao Yan. Gu Jingyuan urged her to stay out of it, but Lu Wanqing adamantly refused, insisting she wouldn't let anyone harm him and would handle the situation.
Episode 18 Recap
Gu Jingyuan found himself unable to face Qiao Yan after their recent argument, so he packed some clothes and told her he was leaving for a few days on a business trip, strictly instructing Lin Ze to keep his whereabouts a secret. Meanwhile, Qiao Yan, eager to please, learned to cook with Yue and prepared an elaborate meal, sending photos to Gu Jingyuan. However, his responses were distant, leaving Qiao Yan feeling neglected.
She confided in Miao, expressing her fear that marriage was proving to be the "grave of love." She observed that Gu Jingyuan had become increasingly busy and elusive since their wedding, rarely answering her calls or texts, almost as if he was deliberately avoiding her. Miao, frustrated by Gu Jingyuan's behavior, advised Qiao Yan that men needed to be kept in check and made to feel a sense of crisis.
She volunteered to pry information from Lin Ze while encouraging Qiao Yan to actively "check up on him." Unaware of this, Qin Ziyu had already noticed Gu Jingyuan's frequent private meetings with Mr. Lin of Qin's Group. He suspected they were conspiring against Qin's, especially given the recent volatile stock market activity.
When confronted, Gu Jingyuan revealed he was indeed acquiring Qin's shares, explaining that once Mr. Lin secured them, he would have sufficient leverage to remove Qin Ziyu from the company. Gu Jingyuan offered Qin Ziyu a way out: he would halt the acquisition if Qin Ziyu allowed him to take Luo Qian and promised to keep a secret forever.
Gu Jingyuan understood Qin Ziyu's true motivations, asserting that if he truly only wanted Qiao Yan, he would have revealed the secret long ago. But Qin Ziyu's hatred for Gu Jingyuan ran deeper, aiming to destroy everything he had. Gu Jingyuan concluded that Qin Ziyu would never abandon Qin's, as without the company, he would have no power to contend with him.
Back home, Qiao Yan visited Gu Jingyuan at the office to bring him food but instead found a necklace belonging to Lu Wanqing and a divorce agreement. She took the document home. When Gu Jingyuan returned, he saw it and tried to dismiss it as a mere precaution against business risks. Qiao Yan, however, knew he was concealing something significant. Unable to get answers from him directly, she decided to investigate on her own.
She called Miao, who revealed that Lin Ze, after being plied with drinks, confessed Gu Jingyuan was not on a business trip but staying in a hotel, deliberately avoiding home. Miao also shared rumors of Gu Jingyuan's frequent association with Lu Wanqing. This information prompted Qiao Yan to secretly follow Lu Wanqing. Lu Wanqing met with Qin Ziyu and then proceeded to Xin Yu Sanatorium.
Qin Ziyu proposed a deal, offering her three percent of Qin's shares if she helped him dismantle Gu's. Lu Wanqing agreed, driven by a desire to return to a time when she and Gu Jingyuan had nothing, believing that only then would he be truly hers. She also pressed Qin Ziyu for his true reasons for hating "Yuan." He instructed her to visit the sanatorium the next day for answers.
A nurse then led Lu Wanqing to Luo Qian, where Qin Ziyu arrived and revealed that Luo Qian was the woman his father had abandoned, and more shockingly, Gu Jingyuan's birth mother, making Gu Jingyuan his father's illegitimate son. Lu Wanqing was stunned, finally understanding that Qin Ziyu was using this truth to threaten Gu Jingyuan. Meanwhile, Qiao Yan, still tracking Lu Wanqing, arrived at the remote sanatorium but was stopped by security, who denied her entry without an appointment.
Determined, Qiao Yan enlisted Miao's help to professionally investigate the sanatorium. Miao soon discovered that the facility was owned by Qin's Group, further connecting it to Qin Mian and raising Qiao Yan's suspicions about Lu Wanqing's involvement. That evening, Qiao Yan's grandfather confronted her, concerned after Sister Yue observed that Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan were rarely talking and sleeping in separate rooms. Worried about a quarrel, he pressed for the truth.
Qiao Yan, not wanting to worry him, lied that Gu Jingyuan was working long hours and occasionally slept in another room to avoid disturbing her rest. Soon after, Gu Jingyuan confronted Lu Wanqing, knowing she was conspiring with Qin Ziyu, and told her to resign. News quickly spread within Gu's Group that Lu Wanqing, the design director, had abruptly resigned. Colleagues gossiped that she was caught attempting to photograph confidential company documents for Gu Jingyuan.
The media reported on her sudden departure and speculated on its potential impact on Gu's fully committed "children-friendly community" project. Qiao Yan later met with Lu Wanqing, seeking answers about her sudden resignation. Lu Wanqing, however, refused to divulge any details, suggesting Qiao Yan ask Gu Jingyuan herself. She then tried to sow doubt, implying that Gu Jingyuan's secrecy meant he didn't trust Qiao Yan or deem her worthy of sharing his burdens.
Qiao Yan, however, stood firm, stating that approaching Lu Wanqing was a mistake and reaffirming her trust in Gu Jingyuan as her husband, believing his actions were for their family and that she should not hear about him from an outsider.
Episode 19 Recap
Qiao Yan sent a message to Gu Jingyuan, stating that if he had not come to a clear decision by Grandpa Gu’s birthday, they should seriously reconsider their relationship. That night, Gu Jingyuan had a nightmare. He dreamed that on his father’s birthday, he revealed his true identity. In the dream, Qiao Yan declared her desire to separate from him, explaining she could not marry the son of a murderer.
In the dream, Qiao Yan and Grandpa Gu were preparing for his birthday, with Qiao Yan enthusiastically decorating the house and reassuring Grandpa Gu it was their first birthday celebration since her marriage. Just as Gu Jingyuan’s dream-father arrived, Gu Jingyuan confessed, "I’m Qin Mian’s son." Qiao Yan reacted with shock, refusing to marry a murderer's son and demanding a divorce, severing all ties with the Gu family.
Gu Jingyuan called out for her and his father in distress, but Qiao Yan’s dream-figure remained resolute. Earlier that day, Grandpa Gu entrusted Uncle Xu with an investigation. Uncle Xu discovered that Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan's recent argument might be linked to Qin Ziyu, who seemed to harbor feelings for Qiao Yan. Having learned this, Gu Changfeng arranged to meet Qin Ziyu at the cemetery where Qiao Yan's parents were buried.
When Qin Ziyu arrived, he expressed remorse for his father’s past actions and offered to do anything for Gu Changfeng and Qiao Yan. Gu Changfeng challenged him to swear, before Qiao Yan's parents, to stay away from her. Qin Ziyu admitted his affection for Qiao Yan but Gu Changfeng firmly reminded him that Qiao Yan was married and loved Gu Jingyuan.
He drew a parallel to Qin Ziyu's father, Qin Mian, whose stubbornness led to tragedy, and warned Qin Ziyu not to repeat history. Gu Changfeng then threatened that if Qin Ziyu wished to protect the Qin corporation, he must distance himself from Qiao Yan, otherwise he would not hesitate to go after the Qin family, including Qin Mian in prison, to protect his children.
Qin Ziyu retaliated by questioning why Gu Changfeng protected Gu Jingyuan, whom he called a "bastard," and disrespectfully mentioned Gu Jingyuan’s mother. Gu Changfeng fiercely defended Gu Jingyuan, reminding Qin Ziyu that the Qin family owed the Gu family two lives, and warned him to know his place and not desire what was not his. As Gu Changfeng drove away, Qin Ziyu deliberately rear-ended his car.
Qin Ziyu then confronted the elderly man, telling him that Gu Jingyuan’s biological father was the one who owed the Gu family blood debts, suggesting he was Qin Mian, and sarcastically claimed he should call Gu Jingyuan "brother." Gu Changfeng dismissed his claims as nonsense, but Qin Ziyu pressed on, recounting how his father had a child with a dancer, a child Qin Mian never acknowledged, who was then adopted by the Gu family.
Qin Ziyu suggested Gu Changfeng ask Gu Jingyuan for the truth himself, implying that if true, Gu Jingyuan would also share in the blood debt. Gu Changfeng countered that even if Jingyuan were Qin Mian’s son, he would still be a Gu family member, stating that true family is determined by the heart, something Qin Ziyu and Qin Mian would never understand.
Qin Ziyu then escalated his lies, claiming Qin Mian’s past crimes, including the murders of Gu Hai and Qiao Yuling and the theft of Qiao Yan's model, were all orchestrated to pave the way for Gu Jingyuan to inherit the Gu Group. He asserted that Gu Jingyuan was fully aware of these actions and concealed them while manipulating Gu Changfeng into marrying Qiao Yan to him, then asked if Gu Changfeng would still consider Gu Jingyuan family.
The mention of the stolen model visibly shocked Gu Changfeng, who demanded to know how Qin Ziyu knew about it. Gu Changfeng began to suffer a heart attack and dropped his medicine. Despite Gu Changfeng's repeated pleas for his medication, Qin Ziyu callously ignored him, telling the dying man, "You can only blame yourself for adopting Gu Jingyuan," before leaving him to his fate.
During this crisis, Gu Changfeng desperately called out "Yan" and attempted to contact Gu Jingyuan, stating he would tell him everything that night. Meanwhile, Gu Jingyuan and Lu Wanqing arrived at a sanatorium to visit Luo Qian. A guard initially refused them entry, stating Qin Ziyu’s orders, but Lu Wanqing persuaded him to let them in, promising to handle Qin Ziyu.
To their horror, they found Luo Qian on the rooftop, clutching a photo of herself and Qin Mian and calling out for her son. As Lu Wanqing and the staff desperately tried to talk her down, Luo Qian accidentally dropped the photo, lunged for it, and fell. Gu Jingyuan witnessed her fall and rushed to her side, calling her "Mom." Disoriented, Luo Qian asked if he was "Yuan," and Gu Jingyuan confirmed he was, comforting her as she lay injured.
They immediately transported her to the hospital. Later that evening, Qiao Yan and Uncle Xu grew increasingly worried as they couldn't reach Gu Changfeng. Qiao Yan’s calls to Gu Changfeng went unanswered. Uncle Xu suggested they try calling Gu Jingyuan, as he had seen him chatting with Gu Changfeng that morning. Qiao Yan called Gu Jingyuan and received devastating news.
She and Uncle Xu rushed to the hospital, where a nurse informed them that Gu Changfeng had suffered a myocardial infarction and had passed away, having been found at least two hours after his symptoms began. Uncle Xu was heartbroken, lamenting that he had been looking forward to celebrating with Gu Changfeng that night.
Qiao Yan, distraught, cried over Grandpa Gu's body, reminding him that she had decorated the house for his birthday and that they were waiting for him to come home. Heartbroken, Qiao Yan tried to call Gu Jingyuan, but his phone was unreachable. At the hospital, she encountered Gu Jingyuan and Lu Wanqing, who was collecting Luo Qian's test results. Qiao Yan immediately confronted Gu Jingyuan, assuming he had ignored her calls because he was with Lu Wanqing.
Gu Jingyuan attempted to explain, promising to tell her and his father everything once he had handled all matters, but Qiao Yan, overwhelmed with grief and anger, tearfully responded, "It’s too late. It’s too late." At Gu Changfeng's funeral, Qiao Yan completely ignored Gu Jingyuan, deeply hurting him.
Qin Ziyu arrived, insisting he was there to pay his respects, and immediately provoked Gu Jingyuan by announcing, "If you want everyone in Xijiang to know you’re Qin Mian’s son, then go ahead." He further taunted Gu Jingyuan about his loyalty to the Gu family, mocking him for not acknowledging Qin Mian, the father who supposedly sacrificed so much for him. Gu Jingyuan lunged at Qin Ziyu, and Qiao Yan quickly intervened, separating them.
Qin Ziyu then feigned innocence, apologizing to Qiao Yan and offering to leave, to which Qiao Yan said, "Thank you, Qin Ziyu." Shortly after, Lu Wanqing approached Qiao Yan, offering her condolences and support, assuring her she was worried and would be there for her if she needed anything. Qiao Yan then confronted Gu Jingyuan about his behavior, asking him to stop causing trouble and let Grandpa Gu rest in peace.
She then politely but firmly asked Qin Ziyu to leave, which he agreed to do. After the funeral, Qin Ziyu spoke with Lu Wanqing, who questioned his true feelings for Qiao Yan. He admitted that Qiao Yan was a good woman, but his primary motivation was to "take her back" from Gu Jingyuan, believing she was stolen from him. Lu Wanqing scoffed at his "crazy" ambition, to which he retorted, "Same to you."
Qin Ziyu then asked if Lu Wanqing wouldn't pay her respects to Grandpa Gu, and she sarcastically asked if he wanted her to get beaten like him. Lu Wanqing handed Qin Ziyu some documents or items he had requested, explaining she obtained them by pretending to help Gu Jingyuan with Luo Qian, thereby regaining Gu Jingyuan’s trust as a supposed mole against Qin Ziyu. She reminded him of his promise, and Qin Ziyu assured her of their continued cooperation.
Later, Qiao Yan brought Grandpa Gu’s portrait home. Gu Jingyuan bowed three times before the portrait, apologizing to his father. He then approached Qiao Yan, telling her he had something important to say. He explained that he had been avoiding her because he was afraid to face her and feared her hatred once she learned the truth. Qiao Yan, desperate for answers, asked, "What truth?" Gu Jingyuan finally confessed, "I’m Qin Mian’s son."
Episode 20 Recap
Gu Jingyuan finally explained his prolonged avoidance of Qiao Yan, admitting he was afraid she would hate him if she knew the full truth. He revealed he had learned his biological mother was still alive, confined to Xin Yu Sanatorium, and that his biological father was Qin Mian.
Gu Jingyuan confessed he didn't know how to tell Qiao Yan or Gu Changfeng, which led him to prepare a divorce agreement as a desperate tactic when Qin Ziyu threatened him with his mother's safety to force a divorce. Qiao Yan was heartbroken, not by Gu Jingyuan's parentage, but by his decision to bear such a heavy burden alone, keeping it from her and her grandfather.
She empathized with the difficult days he endured but felt deeply disappointed by his lack of trust, questioning why he would not face challenges with his family. Despite Gu Jingyuan's heartfelt apologies and pleas for forgiveness, Qiao Yan felt some things, once too late, could not be undone. To protect him from further threats and suffering related to his identity, she decided they should divorce, asserting that even divorced, they would always remain a family.
Gu Jingyuan desperately refused, promising to mend their fractured relationship until she was willing to return to him, and Qiao Yan agreed to temporarily put the divorce aside if he would agree to her upcoming request. Meanwhile, after Luo Qian's rescue, Qin Ziyu instructed the hospital staff that no one, including Lu Wanqing, was to see her. At Gu Changfeng's grave, Gu Jingyuan reflected on his father's past lessons about not running away from problems and facing consequences.
He remembered Gu Changfeng's words about not missing opportune moments in life and vowed to act differently this time, understanding that if someone doesn't accept an apology, it doesn't mean one should give up. Following Gu Changfeng’s passing, a shareholders’ meeting was convened to elect a new chairman for Gu's Group. Gu Jingyuan was initially nominated, but Qiao Yan arrived, revealing Gu Changfeng's will named her as the successor.
Although some shareholders were hesitant about her inexperience, Gu Jingyuan immediately declared his full support for Qiao Yan as the new chairwoman. He privately explained to Qiao Yan that he fully supported her ambition to independently lead Gu's Group, aligning with her promise to her grandfather to protect the company. Addressing the board, Gu Jingyuan pledged his unwavering assistance to Qiao Yan, emphasizing his continued commitment to the company as a member of the Gu family.
With his support and Gu Changfeng’s will, Qiao Yan was unanimously elected. She thanked the board, vowing to uphold her grandfather's legacy and work with everyone for the company's future. Soon after Qiao Yan took office, a crisis erupted. Former CFO Zhou Qiao, whom Gu Jingyuan had previously dismissed, filed a real-name report alleging Gu's Group engaged in illegal fundraising through real estate pre-sales.
This led to the immediate freezing of all company accounts, and an investigation team was on its way. Gu Jingyuan quickly instructed Lin Ze to arrange for the new CFO to meticulously prepare all financial records for the investigation, assuring Qiao Yan that Gu's Group's operations were fully compliant with the law.
While Qiao Yan expressed concerns about the mounting pressures of her new role, Gu Jingyuan offered her comfort and encouragement, reminding her to take care of herself and expressing his pride in her. However, Lin Ze soon returned with more alarming news: critical financial ledgers and documents were missing, threatening to delay the investigation for two months and causing a severe liquidity crisis for the company.
Gu Jingyuan remained calm, reassuring Qiao Yan that they would find a solution, and Qiao Yan visited Gu Changfeng's grave, reaffirming her commitment to protecting Gu's Group with Gu Jingyuan. Separately, Xu informed Qiao Yan of a suspicious rear-end collision mark on Gu Changfeng's car that appeared after his birthday.
He recalled that prior to his death, Gu Changfeng had asked him to investigate Qin Ziyu's involvement in an issue between Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan, and Xu had reported his findings to Gu Changfeng. Reviewing cemetery surveillance footage from the day Gu Changfeng died, Xu discovered Gu Changfeng had met Qin Ziyu there.
Although no collision marks were visible when their cars arrived or departed the cemetery, Qiao Yan deduced that the accident must have occurred on an unmonitored road, leading her to suspect Qin Ziyu's involvement in her grandfather's death. Seeking to gather more information, Qiao Yan met with Qin Ziyu at a theater, feigning an apology for Gu Jingyuan's past actions.
She confided in him that she planned to divorce Gu Jingyuan and that he had agreed, though the news remained private, asking him to keep it a secret. Qin Ziyu, overjoyed, immediately knelt and declared his love for Qiao Yan, mentioning he had wanted to tell her since his return but felt "the obstacle between them" (referring to Gu Changfeng) prevented it. Qiao Yan, testing his reaction, directly asked if he meant her grandfather.
Qin Ziyu quickly rephrased, saying Gu Changfeng might not have wanted them together and that "the accident already happened." Qiao Yan gently rebuffed his advances, stating that recent events left her unable to pursue a new relationship, suggesting they remain friends. As she left, Qiao Yan's car coincidentally wouldn't start, and Qin Ziyu offered her his car to get to an urgent company meeting. Qiao Yan accepted, her true intention being to examine his vehicle for any signs of the collision.
Episode 21 Recap
With Gu's Group's funds frozen, Gu Jingyuan met with Mr. Yuan, hoping he would make a further investment or accept a loan agreement. Mr. Yuan, however, was secretly colluding with Qin Ziyu. He outright refused a further investment and insisted that Gu Jingyuan use the company's projects as collateral for a loan, which Gu Jingyuan refused, calling it an exploitation.
After Gu Jingyuan left, Mr. Yuan called Qin Ziyu, confirming that Gu Jingyuan did not agree to the terms, and reiterated his loyalty to Qin Ziyu's father. Meanwhile, Qin Ziyu was seen with Zhou Qiao, whom he had arranged to send abroad with a sum of money.
Qin Ziyu warned Zhou Qiao that the money had been transferred to his overseas account and advised him to leave Xijiang to avoid any complications, stressing that Zhou Qiao's report against the Gu's Group was purely due to his personal grudge against Gu Jingyuan and that he had never met Qin Ziyu. Lu Wanqing, also present, tried to subtly ascertain Qin Ziyu's next move.
Qin Ziyu revealed his intention to make Gu Jingyuan lose everything and be completely ousted from the Gu's Group. In a separate investigation, Xu confirmed that Qin Ziyu's car had caused a rear-end collision with Gu Changfeng's car. Qin Ziyu, he concluded, was a "jerk" and would be made to pay. Qiao Yan was consumed by guilt, believing she was responsible for her grandfather's death. She confided in Miao, sharing her suspicion that Qin Ziyu was behind it.
Qiao Yan suddenly remembered that the dashcam footage from Qin Ziyu's car was deleted, and thought it might be recoverable if the memory card could be found. Miao agreed it was possible to restore data if not overwritten, but also pointed out the danger of retrieving the card and suggested involving Gu Jingyuan. Qiao Yan hesitated, unsure how to approach Gu Jingyuan with such a risky plan.
She felt it was her leniency towards Qin Ziyu that led her grandfather to meet him, resulting in the accident. Later that evening, Gu Jingyuan waited anxiously for Qiao Yan to return home. He expressed his worry about her and offered to make her wontons. Qiao Yan acknowledged his concern for Luo Qian and stated they must rescue her from Qin Ziyu's clutches.
On the phone, Qiao Yan proposed to Gu Jingyuan that saving Luo Qian would be an opportunity to stage a fake breakup, making Qin Ziyu believe they had truly separated. Gu Jingyuan strongly opposed the idea, deeming it too dangerous for Qiao Yan to approach Qin Ziyu alone. However, Qiao Yan insisted, arguing that Qin Ziyu was likely her grandfather's murderer and they had no solid evidence, making a direct approach the only way to find his weaknesses.
She urged Gu Jingyuan to protect the Gu's Group while she pursued the truth. After much persuasion, Gu Jingyuan, though deeply worried, agreed to cooperate with her plan to bring justice for her grandfather. Following their plan, Qiao Yan, Gu Jingyuan, Lin Ze, and Miao infiltrated the sanatorium. Miao and Lin Ze, disguised as deliverymen, managed to get past security by bribing the guard. They located Luo Qian, who was disoriented and asking for her photos.
Qiao Yan promised to retrieve them, assuring Gu Jingyuan she would be fine and urged him to take his mother to safety first. As Gu Jingyuan, Lin Ze, and Miao rushed Luo Qian out, Qiao Yan went back for the photos. Qin Ziyu suddenly appeared, holding Qiao Yan hostage. Gu Jingyuan confronted him, warning that detaining a patient was illegal, but Qin Ziyu threatened to involve the media if the police were called. Luo Qian then suffered a medical emergency.
Qin Ziyu seized the moment, forcing Gu Jingyuan to choose between Qiao Yan and Luo Qian. Gu Jingyuan made the difficult decision to take his ailing mother to the hospital first, leaving Qiao Yan behind. Miao was distraught and urged Gu Jingyuan to prioritize Qiao Yan, but Gu Jingyuan insisted on taking Luo Qian to the hospital immediately.
Qin Ziyu, believing his scheme had worked and Qiao Yan would finally see Gu Jingyuan's "true colors," did not physically harm Qiao Yan. Instead, to further manipulate her and sow hatred, he fabricated a story, implying that Gu Jingyuan might have been involved in her parents' death. Qiao Yan feigned anger and a desire to investigate.
Qin Ziyu, pleased with her reaction, offered her a place to stay, unaware that this was all part of Qiao Yan's elaborate ruse to appear to break with Gu Jingyuan and gain access to his property to find the memory card. Qiao Yan accepted, planning to search for the card there, hoping to find evidence that Qin Ziyu was responsible for her grandfather's death.
While Gu Jingyuan was at the hospital with Luo Qian, he remained deeply concerned for Qiao Yan. Qiao Yan, now at Qin Ziyu's residence, prayed for strength to bring him to justice. She secretly entered his art studio, where she discovered paintings by her mother.
Hidden among them, she found a letter from Qin Mian to Qin Ziyu, where Qin Mian stated he would take all the blame for what Qin Ziyu had done, telling his son to forget what he had done and not to seek revenge, but to protect the Qin family first. This letter made Qiao Yan suspect Qin Ziyu’s involvement in her parents' death, questioning if someone other than Qin Mian was involved.
Qin Ziyu, in the meantime, had leaked the news of Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan's divorce. Qiao Yan saw the news and confronted him, expressing concern that it might harm the Gu's Group. Qin Ziyu dismissed her concerns, stating it was the perfect time to attack the Gu's Group and offering to help her reclaim it.
When Qiao Yan suggested attending a routine company meeting the next day, hoping to find an excuse to leave, Qin Ziyu seemed reluctant to let her go, offering to accompany her instead. Qiao Yan declined, explaining his presence would be inappropriate given the shareholders. During a late-night snack, Qin Ziyu attempted to kiss Qiao Yan, but she dodged, causing his phone to fall. Qiao Yan apologized and asked him to check if it was broken.
As Qin Ziyu unlocked his phone, Qiao Yan quickly memorized his password. He then expressed his feelings for her, calling her a "ray of light" in his life and promising to be a good husband and father if given a chance. Qiao Yan, feigning exhaustion, excused herself to her room, leaving Qin Ziyu with the hope that she wouldn't disappoint him.
Episode 22 Recap
Qiao Yan was convinced something was amiss with Qin Ziyu and felt a pressing need to act swiftly. Meanwhile, Gu Jingyuan, unable to shake his worry for Qiao Yan, had been spending every night in his car near Qin Ziyu’s residence, hoping to be closer to her. Miao was surprised to learn of this from Lin Ze. While Qiao Yan was undercover, Miao was also busy investigating.
She managed to hack into Qin Ziyu’s email account and made a significant discovery: a recurring transaction account. She traced it to a social media page belonging to a man named Feng, who Lin Ze initially mistook for Qin Ziyu’s girlfriend, leading him to believe Qin Ziyu was cheating on Qiao Yan. Miao corrected him, pointing out it was Feng. This new information led Miao to suspect that Qin Mian might have taken the fall for Qin Ziyu.
The next day, after Qiao Yan went to the office, Miao met with her and Gu Jingyuan. Miao shared her revelation that Qin Mian was likely covering for Qin Ziyu, condemning the Qin family's malicious actions. Qiao Yan emphasized that anger was futile now and that their priority was to stop Qin Ziyu, whose machinations were clearly targeting Gu Jingyuan and the Gu’s Group.
She warned Gu Jingyuan not to visit Qin Ziyu’s neighborhood anymore, as being discovered would jeopardize everything. Qiao Yan revealed that she had obtained Qin Ziyu’s phone password (as seen in the previous episode) and intended to return to his house to continue searching for crucial evidence. Gu Jingyuan, though worried, understood her resolve and urged her to stay safe, promising to handle things at the company during their phone call.
Upon Qiao Yan’s return home that evening, Qin Ziyu confronted her, angered by photos of her embracing Gu Jingyuan. He demanded to know why she had lied and pretended to break up with Gu Jingyuan to help him against the audit team. Qiao Yan admitted her deception, explaining that she had suspected Zhou Qiao was working for him from the beginning.
Therefore, on the day they rescued Luo Qian, Qiao Yan decided to play along and move into Qin Ziyu's house as part of her plan. Qin Ziyu, heartbroken, questioned if she had ever truly loved him, but Qiao Yan urged him to stop making mistakes and stated that his words disgusted her, asserting that he only loved himself. Qin Ziyu confirmed this, declaring his self-love.
Furious, Qin Ziyu then confined Qiao Yan to her bedroom, instructing his guards to watch her. He then left, telling Qiao Yan that "the real show is about to begin." Meanwhile, at the Gu’s Group shareholders’ meeting, Qin Ziyu made a dramatic appearance, claiming to be the largest shareholder after Chairwoman Qiao. He announced that he held 20% of Gu’s shares, having acquired 15% from Jinjie Holdings and an additional 5% from other shareholders last year.
When the perplexed shareholders questioned how Jinjie Holdings acquired such a large stake, Qin Ziyu revealed that Gu Jingyuan had sold his shares to Jinjie Holdings, with the public announcement imminent. Qin Ziyu, misrepresenting Qiao Yan’s situation, claimed she was unwell and had entrusted him to convene this emergency meeting to "kick out some hypocrites." He then arrogantly demanded that Gu Jingyuan, who supposedly no longer held any shares, leave the meeting. However, Gu Jingyuan was prepared.
He disclosed that Xu Wen, the former chairman’s special assistant, had transferred 2% of his shares to him. Furthermore, three major shareholders had signed an acting-in-concert agreement, granting Gu Jingyuan final decision-making power. With these actions, Gu Jingyuan now held the same number of shares as Qin Ziyu. He then explained his strategy: he had signed a VAM agreement with Jinjie Holdings, selling his shares through over-the-counter options with a 1:10 leverage, betting that someone would buy them.
Gu Jingyuan then sarcastically thanked Qin Ziyu for his money, which had inadvertently resolved Gu’s Group’s financial crisis. Qin Ziyu realized he had been tricked, understanding that Lu Wanqing had been in league with Gu Jingyuan all along. Back at Qin Ziyu’s residence, Qiao Yan learned from a guard that Qin Ziyu was at the Gu’s Group. Just then, Lu Wanqing arrived, bringing drinks for the two security guards stationed outside Qiao Yan’s room.
Qiao Yan initially wondered if Lu Wanqing was allied with Qin Ziyu, but Lu Wanqing had secretly drugged the drinks. After the guards consumed the beverages and passed out, Qiao Yan seized the opportunity to search for evidence. Lu Wanqing entered, confirming Qiao Yan had secured the memory card and the model.
She confirmed that Gu Jingyuan believed Qin Ziyu was responsible for Qiao Yan’s parents' deaths and that her alliance with Qin Ziyu had been a ruse to help Qiao Yan. Lu Wanqing urged Qiao Yan to flee, as Qin Ziyu was returning. As Qiao Yan attempted to escape, Qin Ziyu arrived. He confronted her, expressing his intense love while accusing her of betrayal.
Qiao Yan vehemently rejected his declarations, asserting that his words were sickening and that he was only capable of loving himself. Enraged, Qin Ziyu admitted his self-love and became aggressive, attempting to force himself on her. During the struggle, he realized Qiao Yan knew the truth about his involvement in her parents' deaths. He chillingly offered to take her to Germany or "the afterlife."
Just as he cornered her, Lu Wanqing appeared and struck Qin Ziyu with a stick, knocking him unconscious. She urged Qiao Yan to flee with her. Qin Ziyu soon recovered and pursued them, angrily berating his guards as "worthless idiots." He caught up with the two women, scoffing at Lu Wanqing for her unrequited love for Gu Jingyuan. As Qin Ziyu lunged for the evidence, Qiao Yan refused to surrender it, warning him to cease his malicious acts.
Just then, Gu Jingyuan arrived, fighting off Qin Ziyu. Qiao Yan intervened, telling Gu Jingyuan that she had found the evidence, and urged him to take them home. As Qin Ziyu watched them leave, he lamented that if Gu Jingyuan had arrived a moment later, Qiao Yan would have been his forever.
Episode 23 Recap
Miao successfully recovered data from the memory card, revealing that Qin Ziyu was responsible for Gu Changfeng's death. The model, which Qin Mian had been unable to explain, was found to be with Qin Ziyu. Gu Jingyuan, seeing this evidence, concluded that Qin Ziyu was also involved in his elder brother and sister-in-law's car accident. He declared that Qin Ziyu must pay the price and decided to call the police.
Following the report, officers arrived at Qin Ziyu's residence and apprehended the two security guards who had been involved. After returning home, Qiao Yan was plagued by nightmares, seeing Qin Ziyu's evil face. Gu Jingyuan comforted her, regretting the fear she had experienced. He reassured her that the police were actively searching for Qin Ziyu and that she was safe at home. Qiao Yan, shaken by these events, asked Gu Jingyuan to stay with her.
She then confessed that she had realized her love for him was unconditional; she wanted to be with him regardless of his identity or parentage, and was ready to face everything together. Qiao Yan later visited Luo Qian at Aiying Hospital, where a nurse delivered the grim news that Luo Qian was in the late stages of brain cancer and her family should prepare for the worst.
Qiao Yan stayed by Luo Qian's bedside, imploring her to hold on, reminding her that Gu Jingyuan had just found her and they had not yet truly reunited. When Qiao Yan mentioned Qin Ziyu's name, Luo Qian's condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite the doctors' best efforts, they could do no more, advising the family to say their final goodbyes. In her last moments, Luo Qian expressed a desire to see her son.
Qiao Yan, thinking she meant Gu Jingyuan, assured her that he was on his way. However, Luo Qian clarified that she wished to see Qin Ziyu. Before Qiao Yan could fully process this revelation, Gu Jingyuan arrived. Luo Qian glanced at him briefly before passing away. Gu Jingyuan subsequently arranged Luo Qian's funeral, with Qiao Yan supporting him throughout. Later, Qiao Yan inquired about his childhood.
Gu Jingyuan shared that when he was about three years old, he woke up one day and Luo Qian was simply gone. His stepfather, He Wei, told him she had passed away from illness, a story Gu Jingyuan never entirely believed. He also recalled that Luo Qian used to protect him from He Wei's drunken rages. However, she later began secretly going somewhere regularly, which always made He Wei angrier and led to more severe abuse.
Reflecting on this, Gu Jingyuan now suspected she had been visiting the Qin residence because she couldn't let go of Qin Mian. Gu Jingyuan noticed Qiao Yan's unease but she held back, stating there was something she needed to confirm before telling him, promising it wouldn't put her in any danger. Driven by her suspicions, Qiao Yan paid Gu Jingyuan's stepfather, He Wei, for information, learning that Luo Qian had given birth at Aiying Hospital.
Investigating the hospital's birth records, Qiao Yan was surprised to find that Song Xinyue had also given birth there around the same time. The records showed Luo Qian transferred from a public hospital shortly after Song Xinyue's admission, and Song Xinyue, whose due date was later in August, had a premature birth due to a fall right after Luo Qian delivered. Qin Ziyu was born on June 23rd, the day Luo Qian was discharged.
Qiao Yan inferred that a baby swap had occurred, concluding that Luo Qian could not have orchestrated this alone. She believed Qin Mian and Luo Qian had colluded to switch the children, with Qin Mian raising his biological son and Luo Qian knowing the truth, effectively stealing Gu Jingyuan's life. Qiao Yan approached Ms. Liu, Qin Ziyu's family housekeeper, promising not to involve her if she helped.
Ms. Liu provided toothbrushes from Qin Mian and Qin Ziyu, which Qiao Yan immediately sent for DNA testing. The results confirmed her theory: Qin Mian and Qin Ziyu were indeed biological father and son. However, proving Song Xinyue was Gu Jingyuan's birth mother would be challenging, as Song Xinyue had passed away long ago. Qiao Yan recalled Qin Ziyu mentioning a specific restaurant where his mother used to take him, hoping to find crucial clues there.
Meanwhile, at Qin's Group, a board meeting was underway to elect a new chairman after Qin Ziyu's removal. Gu Jingyuan made a dramatic entrance, revealing he now held the largest share in Qin's. He explained that all the shares Qin Ziyu had sold to fund his attempt to acquire Gu's Group were now in his possession. He asserted his right to oversee any board decisions and declared his intention to take over Qin's.
News of Gu Jingyuan's hostile takeover reached Qin Ziyu, who, watching from a hidden location, was enraged. Later, as Gu Jingyuan waited for Qiao Yan at the restaurant she had booked, he saw an old photograph displayed on the wall.
The image triggered a vivid flashback: a younger Gu Jingyuan, referred to as "Yuan," was with a kind woman who asked if he wanted a home, then made a pinky promise to adopt him, saying she'd pick him up in a month. This unsettling memory left him disturbed, making him wonder what Qiao Yan was investigating.
Believing the truth was close to being fully revealed, Qiao Yan booked a restaurant and asked Gu Jingyuan to finish work early so they could have dinner together. Gu Jingyuan, looking forward to their date, arrived at the restaurant and called Qiao Yan, who said she was on her way. However, as Qiao Yan headed to the restaurant, she was ambushed and kidnapped by Qin Ziyu. Unaware of the danger, Gu Jingyuan continued to wait for her.
Episode 24 (Ending) Recap
Qin Ziyu, holding Qiao Yan captive, used her phone to contact Gu Jingyuan. As soon as Gu Jingyuan received the call, he immediately rushed to the location Qin Ziyu gave him, a remote villa. Qin Ziyu demanded that Gu Jingyuan come alone and warned him not to involve the police, or Qiao Yan would die. Qiao Yan tried to tell Gu Jingyuan not to come, but Qin Ziyu threatened her.
In a fit of madness, Qin Ziyu revealed his intention to destroy Qiao Yan and Gu Jingyuan, a path reminiscent of Qin Mian. He told Qiao Yan that they were in Song Xinyue's house, where his mother had lived before marrying his father. He spoke of childhood memories and how much happier his mother was there, which made him happy too.
Qin Ziyu then expressed his resentment towards Gu Jingyuan, believing his life was ruined because Gu Jingyuan was Qin Mian's biological son, and he coveted everything Gu Jingyuan had. Qiao Yan, however, vehemently rejected his claims, stating she would only ever love Gu Jingyuan. She vehemently questioned why Qin Ziyu had killed her parents. Qin Ziyu then revealed that Qin Mian had only intended to kill Gu Hai.
However, upon discovering this, Qin Ziyu himself ordered Feng to kill Qiao Yuling, driven by his hatred for her, as he believed she had caused his mother immense pain. Qiao Yan further solidified her accusation by presenting the DNA report that proved Qin Ziyu was, in fact, Qin Mian's biological son. She explained Qin Mian's cunning plan to swap babies with Song Xinyue if both were the same gender, ensuring he could raise his true son.
She also accused Qin Ziyu of indirectly causing Gu Changfeng's death by failing to help him retrieve his medicine, because Gu Changfeng had uncovered Qin Ziyu's involvement in Qiao Yan's parents' car accident. Qin Ziyu admitted to this, justifying it by calling Gu Changfeng "suspicious." As Gu Jingyuan arrived at the Donghu Villa, he immediately sent his location to Lin Ze, instructing him to call the police.
Lin Ze and Miao, upon receiving the message, swiftly left their home and alerted the authorities. Inside, Qin Ziyu, reeling from Qiao Yan's revelations and the DNA proof, finally understood that he was Qin Mian's biological son. He remembered his father's words, always claiming everything he did was for Qin Ziyu, which now made sense. Overwhelmed and broken, Qin Ziyu questioned who truly loved him. He had already doused the house with gasoline, intending to take everyone down with him.
Gu Jingyuan intervened, revealing that Song Xinyue had visited him at the welfare home before her death, wanting to take him in. She only delayed so she could prepare Qin Ziyu, not wanting him to feel abandoned. Qiao Yan added that Luo Qian's last words were Qin Ziyu's name, emphasizing that despite their flaws, everyone had loved him in their own ways. In the ensuing struggle, as Gu Jingyuan tried to stop Qin Ziyu, a knife plunged into his body.
The police and medical teams arrived shortly after, and Gu Jingyuan was rushed to the hospital. Though his life was saved, he had suffered severe blood loss, leading to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and fell into a coma with an uncertain prognosis. Qiao Yan spiraled into despair, refusing to eat or return home. Lu Wanqing visited her at the hospital, urging her to snap out of her despondency.
She reminded Qiao Yan that Gu Jingyuan risked his life for her, not to see her in such a state. Lu Wanqing's words reignited Qiao Yan's spirit. Qiao Yan returned to Gu's Group, where she addressed the employees, expressing gratitude for their loyalty during a difficult period and announcing a three-month salary bonus for everyone. She took charge of the company, managing affairs diligently while balancing daily visits to the hospital, finding strength and motivation in thoughts of Gu Jingyuan.
A few months later, as Miao prepared to return to Germany, she visited Gu Jingyuan at the hospital, playfully urging him to wake up. As Qiao Yan walked Miao out, Lin Ze finally mustered the courage to confess his feelings to Miao. To prove his sincerity, he brought along his younger sister, Wenwen, and his cousin, Mei. Qiao Yan couldn't help but smile at Lin Ze's earnest yet awkward display.
Miao, touched, told Lin Ze she would wait for him to visit her if she didn't return, and they parted ways, with Lin Ze promising to be there for her. After several months, Gu Jingyuan finally awoke from his coma. By the time of their one-year proposal anniversary, he had been awake for several months and was fully recovered. He surprised Qiao Yan with a grand gesture.
He had bought the Rose Theater, her favorite place, gifting it to her so she could pursue her passion for the violin and theater while he took on the responsibility of supporting their family. He then presented her with a newly custom-made ring, solemnly placing it on her finger and vowing never to lose it again. Qiao Yan visited the graves of her parents and her grandparents, promising to live well. Gu Jingyuan and Qiao Yan stood together, reaffirming their love and commitment to a shared future, knowing their loved ones would bless them.
