Yuchi Yao Yao, a diligent and hardworking third-year history student at Jiangzhou University, also worked part-time as a private tutor. She often felt like "the model child" but secretly longed for a little change in her life. In stark contrast, You Xi, a popular idol, had been a "baddie" since childhood, believing his good looks were enough for success and that hard work was only for ordinary people. Despite their contrasting lives, their paths converged over a book.
One day, at a bookstore, Yao Yao was searching for a copy of "Gongyang Commentary" for her boyfriend's birthday. She encountered You Xi, who was also looking for the same book. A heated argument ensued, with You Xi claiming he saw it first and Yao Yao insisting she took it first. The situation escalated when You Xi's fans discovered him. To escape, he instinctively grabbed Yao Yao and hid, accidentally swapping their identical black backpacks in the process.
This exchange had immediate repercussions: You Xi’s critical Character Exposition essay for a new drama audition was mistakenly replaced by an essay titled "My Dad," leading to an awkward encounter with Director Wei Ran. This mix-up also caused an embarrassing setback for Yao Yao during a private tutor interview. Meanwhile, You Xi was fiercely competing with Song Qie Ge for the male lead role in Director Wei Ran's new film, "Chancellor Zhong."
You Xi publicly declared his determination to win the part. However, his agent, Zhu Da Zhuang, doubted You Xi's ability to grasp the historical context required. To prepare You Xi, Zhu Da Zhuang announced he had hired the top student from Jiangzhou University's history department—who, to their mutual dismay, turned out to be Yuchi Yao Yao. Their reunion immediately sparked another furious argument about the backpack mix-up and its consequences.
Yao Yao, disgusted by You Xi's arrogance and his dismissive attitude toward the role, flatly refused to be his teacher. As she stormed off, her forgotten phone rang. You Xi answered it, only to find Song Qie Ge on the line, trying to poach Yao Yao as his own tutor and subtly provoking You Xi. Feeling his role threatened, You Xi acted decisively.
He announced that he had bought out all of Yao Yao’s classes for the foreseeable future and then threatened to file a complaint against her through the tutor accreditation system, reminding her that a second complaint would bar her from teaching on any platform. Faced with this ultimatum, Yao Yao reluctantly agreed to tutor him and signed a confidentiality agreement.
Zhu Da Zhuang then tasked Yao Yao with ensuring You Xi secured the role within two months, reiterating the complaint threat if she failed. The next morning, Yao Yao arrived at You Xi's residence. Zhu Da Zhuang, who preferred to be called Maury, informed her that You Xi had an afternoon schedule, so the class would be in the morning, and restricted her access to the first floor.
Yao Yao, however, found You Xi screaming upstairs about a cockroach, which she promptly dealt with. She then insisted he come downstairs for the lesson, presenting him with a large stack of history books. You Xi proved to be a difficult student, making multiple trips to the bathroom. Stuck in traffic, Yao Yao suggested they use a bicycle, leading You Xi to complain about his hair. Despite his theatrics, he rode the bike recklessly, causing delays.
Upon arriving at the set for his drama, "Accidentally in Love," You Xi was supposed to perform a "borrowed-angle" kiss with actress Zheng Jia Er, but she gave him a real one, much to his annoyance. Later, a stunt double was suddenly unavailable, leading the director to consider cutting the scene. You Xi, however, insisted on performing the wire stunt himself. Yao Yao urged him to reconsider, citing the danger, but he refused.
As You Xi performed the stunt, the wire tragically snapped, sending him plummeting to the ground, where he lay unconscious. Yao Yao rushed to his side and frantically called for an ambulance. At the hospital, You Xi was diagnosed with a minor fracture in his right arm. Zhu Da Zhuang, panicking over potential financial losses, initially blamed Yao Yao for being on set.
When Zhu Da Zhuang suggested his assistant take care of You Xi, You Xi adamantly demanded that Yao Yao be his caretaker, once again threatening to file a complaint if she refused. Reluctantly, Yao Yao agreed. Afterward, she pulled Zhu Da Zhuang aside, expressing her suspicion that the accident was intentional. She pointed out the sudden unavailability of the stunt double, the presence of a new stunt crew member, and the wire breaking despite being checked by experienced professionals.
She urged Zhu Da Zhuang to investigate the matter thoroughly. Acknowledging her concerns, he agreed to look into it. The following day, Yao Yao returned to the hospital for You Xi's lesson. You Xi, demanding as ever, ordered her to buy him braised chicken, a food he hadn't eaten in five years due to his company's strict diet. When Zhu Da Zhuang called, You Xi made Yao Yao answer and pretended to be eating healthily.
However, Zhu Da Zhuang spotted chicken bones, prompting You Xi to blame Yao Yao for eating "junk food" in his room and threaten another complaint, forcing her to dispose of the evidence.
Later, You Xi presented Yao Yao with a long list of unusual tasks, including circling answers on a 999-question history test, fetching his blanket from home (then changing his mind and telling her to roll on the hospital blanket to "give it her scent"), and peeling 999 melon seeds. When Yao Yao later reported completing all tasks, You Xi questioned the exact count of the melon seeds.
Zhu Da Zhuang called again, scolding Yao Yao for planning to leave and reiterating that she must stay by You Xi's side "inch by inch" until he recovered, or face a complaint. That night, Yao Yao, exhausted, dozed off by You Xi's bedside. In her sleep, she replayed the accident, muttering worriedly about the "dangerous wire." You Xi, observing her, felt an unexpected warmth.
The next morning, Yao Yao awoke to find her head resting on You Xi's arm, leading to an awkward silence. Their moment was interrupted by the arrival of his friend, Qi Chao. You Xi, introducing Yao Yao as his "new assistant," dismissed her from the room, disparaging her as "dumb" to Qi Chao. Later, Yao Yao received a call from her boyfriend, Yin Jiu, which disconnected before he could say something important, leaving her troubled.
As Qi Chao was leaving, he offered Yao Yao some cryptic advice, telling her not to fully obey You Xi, but not to defy him either. Feeling restless, You Xi dragged Yao Yao out of the hospital, having circumvented Zhu Da Zhuang's attempt to hide his shoes and bag. While disguised, they stumbled upon a fan meeting for Song Qie Ge.
Later, You Xi humorously failed to "face-pay" for shoes at a store, with the cashier joking his face was "too big." Yao Yao used her own money to buy him a cheap pair. As they walked, they unexpectedly encountered Yin Jiu with Tong Jin, Yao Yao’s close friend. Tong Jin brazenly revealed that she and Yin Jiu were a couple, smugly referring to a text message exchange in which Yao Yao had supposedly already agreed to a breakup.
Utterly bewildered, Yao Yao looked at her phone, unable to recall any such conversation. Tong Jin harshly criticized Yao Yao, claiming Yin Jiu had only stayed with her out of respect for her father, his mentor, and that he no longer needed them now that he had his doctorate. At this point, You Xi stepped forward, subtly displaying his own expensive, limited-edition watch.
He calmly announced that "he" was the one who had sent the text agreeing to the breakup from Yao Yao's phone. Then, possessively taking her arm, he dramatically declared that he and Yuchi Yao Yao had been together for a long time, turning to a stunned Yao Yao and asking, "Isn't that right?"
