Xie Zheng finally uncovered the chilling truth regarding the events at Lin’an. The man known as Sui Yuanhuai, the eldest son of Lord Changxin, was actually the Imperial Grandson, Qi Min. Seventeen years ago, during the catastrophic fire at the East Palace, the Crown Princess had orchestrated a desperate swap to save her son. The real Sui Yuanhuai and the Crown Princess perished in the flames, while Qi Min survived, though his face was horribly disfigured.
He had been raised as the Lord’s son, but Lord Changxin never felt a bond with him, sensing a cold nature in the boy. This lack of affection eventually led the Lord to name his second son, Sui Yuanqing, as the heir. Qi Min, twisted by trauma, had lured Sui Yuanqing to Lin’an, hoping Xie Zheng would kill the heir and clear Qi Min’s path to the throne.
At a secluded villa, Qi Min’s instability manifested in a sudden rage against a maid who failed to manage a fire correctly, ordering her eyes to be gouged out. Yu Qianqian intervened, slapping him to protect the girl and dismissing the terrified servant. When Qi Min questioned if she valued a lowly maid over him, she called him a pitiful man hiding behind a mask of violence.
Qi Min was momentarily haunted by the memory of his own mother pressing him into a fire basin to disfigure him—a horrific act of "love" intended to ensure his survival. Despite his claim that he sought to reclaim the empire and punish those who killed his family, Yu Qianqian saw only a man who had become a monster. Taking advantage of the moment, Yu Qianqian drugged Qi Min and fled the villa toward the outskirts of Lucheng.
She was nearly intercepted by Qi Min’s shadow guards until she ran into Fan Changyu and her companions. The reunion was short-lived as Qi Min personally led his guards to surround them. However, the situation shifted when Xie Qi arrived with General He Jingyuan and a detachment of soldiers. Outnumbered and facing Yu Qianqian’s threat to take her own life, Qi Min was forced to withdraw.
Safe for the moment, Yu Qianqian revealed that Yu Bao’er had been taken by Granny Lan, though she was uncertain of their current location. The group followed General He Jingyuan into Lucheng. Knowing that Changyu was the daughter of his late friend Wei Qilin, the General challenged her to a martial arts spar. As they clashed, he recognized the blade techniques her father had taught her.
He pointed out that she practiced the moves too rigidly; on a battlefield of shifting variables, such predictability was a death sentence. To her shock, He Jingyuan revealed he was an old friend of her father, whom she had always believed was a simple pig butcher from Lin’an. He promised to reveal the full truth once the siege of Lucheng was over and presented her with a suit of custom-made armor.
Yu Qianqian later met with Gongsun Yin, informing him that Qi Min possessed a Tiger Tally which served as evidence of Lord Changxin’s rebellion. Inside the command center, the strategic outlook was grim. Rather than waiting for a siege, Xie Zheng proposed a daring maneuver: a direct strike at Lord Changxin’s headquarters in Luo City. This "straight to the heart" tactic would leave Lucheng’s gates exposed, but it was the only way to end the rebellion quickly.
He Jingyuan agreed to hold the city with five thousand men while Li Huai’an—now nicknamed "Menkan"—was tasked with leading three thousand elite troops to provide cover for Xie Zheng’s assault. Amidst the preparations, Grand Tutor Tao, who had recently become Changyu's foster father and given her the name "Shan Jun," spoke with her. Though she had grown as a warrior, she confessed her weariness of killing.
The Grand Tutor explained that while killing is tragic, ending a war swiftly with minimal casualties is an act of ultimate mercy for the common people. Changyu took his words to heart, later finding solace in the twin blades Xie Zheng had forged for her. Recalling how he had used his own blood to sanctify the steel, she realized the depth of his commitment. The mood in the camp brightened when news arrived that Yu Bao’er had been found.
Xie Zheng arranged for the boy, who was the Imperial Great-Grandson, to be sent safely to Lin’an to reunite with Changning. On the day of departure, He Jingyuan saw Changyu off, privately reflecting on the day he helped name her. He had wished for her to stay by her parents' side like "spring grass," never imagining she would return as a savior of the realm. This farewell would be their last.
As the carriages rolled away from Lucheng, Changyu reached a sudden resolution. She parted ways with Yu Qianqian, asking Xie Jiu to escort the others back to Lin’an while she, Jin Yuanbao, and several others from Lin’an returned to the city. She realized that if Lucheng fell, there would be no safety left for anyone she loved. Even Kang Xiaodan, seeking to avenge his grandmother, chose to stand by her side.
Returning to the gates, Changyu rallied the soldiers, vowing to live and die with the city. Meanwhile, on the outskirts, Xie Zheng led his main force into a brutal clash with Lord Changxin’s army, challenging the rebel Lord to a final, decisive battle.
