In the quiet of the night, Gongsun Yin carried a lantern through the straw behind the camp, searching until he finally recovered a shoe Qi Shu had lost in her haste. Despite the lateness of the hour and his own lingering injuries, he sat up until the fourth watch, meticulously sewing and repairing the shoe by candlelight. When a soldier urged him to rest, Gongsun Yin simply claimed he was studying military secrets, keeping his sentimental task hidden.

Meanwhile, Xie Zheng was at the armory, personally forging a pair of Yuan-Yang blades. Following an ancient tradition that a lethal weapon must be tempered in blood to subdue its spirit and protect its master, Xie Zheng cut his own hand to offer his blood to the forge.

He knew that only Fan Changyu possessed the strength and spirit to truly master these blades, which were intended as a replacement for the butcher’s knife she had lost in her duel with Shi Hu. Deep in the woods, Zhao Xun and young Yu Bao'er remained in hiding. Bao'er noticed wheel ruts on the road and, drawing from her photographic memory of military specifications she had seen in her father's study, correctly identified them as tracks from the Xie Army.

Zhao Xun was struck by the six-year-old’s brilliance, realizing that her divine intelligence might mark her as a person of destiny. He decided to gamble on seeking help from the Xie Army rather than continuing to flee. The Grand Tutor visited Changyu and observed young Changning. Being well-versed in physiognomy, he noted that Changning was destined for great wealth and honor, though her noble fate made her constitution naturally frail.

He warned Changyu that the girl must remain by her side until her coming-of-age ceremony at fifteen to anchor her spirit. Turning to more formal matters, the Grand Tutor proposed adopting Changyu as his sworn daughter. Though he had been prompted by Xie Zheng, he expressed a genuine desire to have her as his own, fearing a lonely old age.

Changyu, proud of her identity as a butcher from Lin’an, initially hesitated, stating she had no desire to climb social ladders or rely on a Marquis. However, remembering how the Grand Tutor had risked his life for her at the dam, she knelt and formally accepted him as her sworn father. As a gift, he bestowed upon her the courtesy name "Shanjun," signifying both a virtuous person of the mountains and a mighty tiger.

Despite the victory at North Gu Mountain, the heavy casualties weighed on Changyu. She realized the upcoming battle at Lucheng would be even more brutal. Unwilling to remain a mere dependent of the Marquis, she decided to leave the camp to find Yu Qianqian and Bao'er. She entrusted Qi Shu with the task of escorting Changning and Mister Zhao back to Jizhou to be with Madam Zhao.

Qi Shu, recognizing Changyu's incredible strength, did not try to stop her, acknowledging that few in the land could match a woman who killed Shi Hu in two strikes. Changyu left a brief note and departed with Jin Yuanbao and his men. Xie Zheng immediately gave chase on horseback, fearing she was leaving because of his hidden identity. Changyu clarified that whether he was the scholar Yan Zheng or the Marquis Xie Zheng, her feelings remained the same.

However, she explained that a lasting marriage required mutual support, and as a Marquis, his troubles were beyond her reach. She insisted on rescuing her friends herself, refusing to spend her life in total reliance on him. Before they parted, she silenced his request for a verbal confession of love with a kiss, leaving him to return to camp and secretly assign a squad of elites to protect her.

Back at the camp, Gongsun Yin returned the repaired shoe to Qi Shu. Although she was still angry over his previous deceptions, she became worried when he coughed up blood, realizing his injuries were quite real. Gongsun Yin tried to explain that his feelings for her were like his illness—seemingly deceptive but entirely beyond his control—but he was interrupted before he could speak plainly.

Later, Qi Shu overheard a conversation between Gongsun Yin and Xie Zheng, discovering that Gongsun Yin had informed the Consort Dowager of her whereabouts, indirectly orchestrating her marriage arrangement with Li Huai'an. Furious, she left the medicinal soup she had prepared and walked away. In a villa on the western outskirts of Lucheng, Lord Changxin vented his rage at his eldest son, Sui Yuanhuai, for the recent military failures and the danger brought upon his younger brother, Sui Yuanqing.

He coldly declared that even if something happened to Yuanqing, the throne would never belong to Yuanhuai. While Yuanhuai swore a solemn oath of loyalty in front of his brother, his inner thoughts were far more sinister, harboring a secret desire for the deaths of both his father and brother. As Zhao Xun attempted to flee, he was wounded by Sui Yuanhuai’s men. In the moment of crisis, Bao'er blew a whistle, signaling Xie Zheng’s nearby forces for rescue.

After being saved, Zhao Xun revealed a shocking truth to Xie Zheng: the fire at the East Palace years ago had been set by the Crown Princess herself to create a chance for her son to escape. That son, the true Imperial Grandson, was alive and living as Lord Changxin’s eldest son, Sui Yuanhuai. Later, as Qi Shu tended to Gongsun Yin's wounds, she noted that his body bore more than just battle scars.

She noticed a fresh, red mark that didn't match the older, dark bruises from the field. Though Gongsun Yin dismissed it as a simple injury from falling on a stone, the mark remained a strange anomaly that Qi Shu could not find in any of her medical texts.
