Ling Duan, overseeing the new disciples' assessment, deliberately assigned Tusu to monitor their safety. Tusu was initially reluctant, citing his lack of experience and fear of making mistakes, but Ling Duan provoked him by suggesting he would disgrace Reverend Zi Yin. Tusu ultimately agreed to take on the responsibility. At Jade Valley, new disciples pondered the possibility of demons appearing at night and questioned Tusu's ability to protect them, with some even calling him a mute.
Ouyang Shaogong, however, assured them Tusu couldn't hear their whispers, mentioning the ancient magic of "Shunfeng Er" was lost. Other disciples ridiculed Shaogong for trying to curry favor with Tusu, but Qingxue defended Shaogong. Shaogong then warned everyone that Tianyong City, despite its serene appearance, was surrounded by many demons. Later that night, Ling Duan and Zhao Lin secretly released a Gu Huo Niao, a demon with a human face and bird body, which promptly attacked the disciples.
When the demon went after Tusu, Shaogong bravely pushed him out of the way, getting grabbed himself. Qingxue created a diversion, allowing Tusu to rescue Shaogong. As the demon lunged at Qingxue, Tusu shielded her, sustaining an injury. Shaogong then used a thunderbolt bomb to defeat the demon, and the three escaped. Back at Tianyong City, the Head Reverend praised the new disciples' courage and acknowledged Tusu's role in saving them.
However, when Fu Qu inquired about the Gu Huo Niao's appearance, Ling Duan tried to shift blame to Lingyue, claiming Lingyue hadn't properly sealed the demon. Fu Qu defended her Senior Brother, and their argument was only halted by the Head Reverend, who forbade further discussion of the incident. He then assigned Ling Duan and Fu Qu to manage the new disciples, warning Ling Duan against any future mistakes. New disciples began their sword practice, starting with sword distribution.
Shaogong, having just finished cleaning the scripture pavilion, also arrived to receive his. Taking advantage of Ling Duan's inattention, Shaogong secretly stuck a paper tail on his back before going to collect his sword. Ling Duan deliberately made things difficult for Shaogong, claiming his physique was too weak for sword practice and assigning him to kitchen duties. Seeing this, Qingxue also put down her sword, intending to join Shaogong.
Ling Duan refused, and Shaogong persuaded Qingxue to continue her sword training. As Ling Duan proudly walked through the crowd, everyone saw the tail on his back, leading to widespread laughter, which infuriated him. During the introduction of new disciples, Ling Chuan recognized Ouyang Shaogong as a "miracle doctor" who had saved his entire village from an epidemic four years prior.
Shaogong modestly claimed to be merely a doctor skilled in medicine, explaining that he came to Tianyong City to seek immortal prescriptions, hoping to use celestial power to cure ailments beyond ordinary medicine. He also mentioned that he and Qingxue were from the same hometown. Other disciples, led by Ling Duan, continued to spread rumors about Tusu, calling him a "jinx" who caused his master to go into reclusive cultivation.
Shaogong later tried to offer Tusu medicine for his injuries, but Tusu, with his usual cold demeanor, rejected the help. Shaogong, worried about the demon poison, insisted on treating him. After acupuncturing Tusu to keep him still, Shaogong discovered that Tusu's affliction was an internal poison, not an external one. Shaogong, however, defended Tusu, refusing Ling Duan's attempts to recruit him into his faction. The next morning, Shaogong brought Tusu a tonic.
Ling Duan arrived to harass Tusu about his chores at the sword ground and hidden scroll pavilion. Shaogong volunteered to perform Tusu's duties instead, drawing more mockery from Ling Duan, who claimed Shaogong would never be accepted by Reverend Zi Yin. Shaogong then publicly accused Ling Duan and Zhao Lin of releasing the Gu Huo Niao, pointing out inconsistencies in Zhao Lin's alibi.
Ling Duan vehemently denied it and threatened to expel Shaogong from Tianyong City, confident that Shaogong lacked evidence. Tusu finally confronted Ling Duan, asking why he was constantly targeted. Ling Duan declared it was because Tusu was a "monster" who had harmed his teacher and posed a potential threat to others. After Ling Duan left, Shaogong explained to Tusu that the timing and location of the demon's appearance strongly indicated Ling Duan was responsible.
Shaogong also pondered the nature of the poison within Tusu's body. Observing Shaogong's unfair treatment, Tusu privately invited Shaogong to meet him at the back of the mountain later that evening to teach him swordplay and cultivation as repayment for Shaogong's earlier medical assistance. Soon after, Shaogong's efforts bore fruit, and he exhibited a golden divine bird spiritual essence. When Zhao Lin reported this to Ling Duan, Ling Duan was furious.
Fearing Tusu's powerful immortal bell, Ling Duan decided to target Shaogong instead, assigning him the arduous task of cleaning the sword-washing pool, hoping to exhaust him and prevent him from practicing swordplay. That evening, Tusu awoke from a dream featuring a long-haired man playing a zither. He found Shaogong playing the same familiar tune. Shaogong explained it was "Huan Yaoshan," a melody composed by an ancient immortal.
Tusu offered to teach Shaogong swordplay, but Shaogong, exhausted from a full day of cleaning swords, declined for the moment, stating that such hardships were merely part of cultivation and did not bother him. When Tusu asked why a physician like him sought training at Tianyong City, Shaogong revealed he was there to fulfill an "unfulfilled wish." Fu Qu and Qingxue overheard Shaogong's wish. Fu Qu offered to help and asked Shaogong to teach her the zither.
Tusu tried to leave, but Fu Qu detained him, asking about Lingyue's return, to which Tusu had no definite answer. Fu Qu lamented Lingyue's absence, and Qingxue and Shaogong teased her with a lover's adage about longing, which Fu Qu quickly dismissed as mere "fellow disciple affection." Shaogong then expressed concern about Tusu's demon poison, explaining that it required a special antidote to be brewed in an alchemy furnace.
Fu Qu mentioned an ancient furnace in the sword pavilion, but warned it was Reverend Zi Yin's sacred cultivation site, guarded by Sword guardian, Sister Hong Yu, and strictly off-limits. Shaogong, emphasizing the urgency of Tusu's condition, persuaded Fu Qu to try. However, Sister Hong Yu steadfastly refused entry. Despite their appeals, highlighting Tusu's status and the humanitarian need, she remained firm.
Shaogong, resorting to a "pity ploy," began kneeling outside the pavilion, sending Fu Qu and Qingxue away so his solitary plea might soften Sister Hong Yu's heart. As Fu Qu and Qingxue discussed their dilemma, Qingxue accidentally mentioned "Youdu." To divert Fu Qu's attention, she pointed to the Lin Tian pavilion, Tusu and Lingyue's residence. Seizing the opportunity, Qingxue made an excuse to go there.
Upon arrival, she spoke to Ah Xiang, Tusu's companion bird, until Tusu appeared and dismissed her. As she left, Qingxue questioned Tusu if he was Yunxi, but he denied it. Disappointed, Qingxue departed, leaving Tusu to wonder aloud to Ah Xiang about Yunxi's identity. Elsewhere, the Gu Huo Niao possessed Fu Qu's soul and confronted Ling Duan, blackmailing him with the knowledge that he had released it. Terrified, Ling Duan begged the demon to target Tusu instead.
The Gu Huo Niao then entered Tusu's room, attempting to drain his vital energy while he slept, but Tusu's protective seal repelled it. When Shaogong entered, the demon tried to attack him but was again repelled by a magic artifact on Shaogong's person. The Gu Huo Niao then fled. Tusu awoke to Shaogong bringing him medicine, urging him to consume it without explanation, leaving Shaogong to ponder the demon's attack.
Meanwhile, Qingxue found the mess hall empty, but Zhao Lin secretly brought her some food. Despite accidentally spilling it, Qingxue gratefully ate it, and Zhao Lin promised to leave her food in the future. Qingxue then inquired about Yunxi. When Zhao Lin expressed suspicion about her true intentions, Qingxue clarified that she was searching for her missing elder brother, which put Zhao Lin at ease, and he promised to help.
Ling Duan, still fearful, knelt when Fu Qu greeted him, though Fu Qu was confused by his behavior. Ling Duan, realizing Fu Qu was back to normal, asked about her activities the previous night, but she only recalled a restless sleep. Shaogong, witnessing this, grew increasingly suspicious and later questioned Qingxue about Fu Qu's return. Qingxue stated Fu Qu had only returned that morning and hadn't revealed her whereabouts.
Shaogong then shared his suspicions with Tusu: Fu Qu had been possessed by the Gu Huo Niao's spirit. He advised against immediately informing the Head Reverend, fearing it would alert the demon, proposing instead to act at night, as demon spirits dispersed in daylight. Shaogong claimed his knowledge of demon-exorcism came from his travels. Fu Qu, enjoying the food left by Zhao Lin, remembered Lingyue doing the same for her and looked happy.
While discussing their crushes, Qingxue mentioned a childhood friend named Yunxi. Zhao Lin, having overheard, burst in with news of a laborer named Yunxi and offered to take Qingxue to him. However, they found a simple-minded man who didn't recognize Qingxue, leaving her confused and disheartened. Meanwhile, the Gu Huo Niao again confronted Ling Duan, coercing him to steal Shaogong's magic artifact. Later, Qingxue found a sword tassel Fu Qu had intended for Lingyue, wondering about Fu Qu's activities.
Ling Duan, attempting to steal Shaogong's artifact, was intercepted by Shaogong and Tusu. Qingxue arrived, anxious about Fu Qu. Under pressure, Ling Duan confessed the truth. Following Tusu and Shaogong's instructions, Ling Duan lured the Gu Huo Niao to an open area. The demon detected the trap, and Ling Duan fled. The three disciples trapped the Gu Huo Niao, forcing it to reveal its true form. Fu Qu coughed blood and fainted.
As Ling Duan checked on her, he became possessed by the demon. Shaogong and Tusu quickly restrained the possessed Ling Duan. Fu Qu, upon waking, was unaware of the events. As dawn approached, Shaogong directed Qingxue to join them in containing Ling Duan until sunrise, when the demon spirit would dissipate. Once the unconscious Ling Duan awoke, he furiously lashed out at Tusu, threatening to expel him and others from Tianyong City.
Shaogong, however, exposed Ling Duan's numerous misdeeds, which greatly angered Fu Qu. Ling Duan then begged Tusu not to report him to the Head Reverend, promising to cease his bullying, and asked Fu Qu to intercede on his behalf. Fu Qu, softened, requested Tusu to drop the matter, to which Tusu generously agreed. Shaogong then made Ling Duan promise not to trouble Tusu again, a promise Ling Duan outwardly accepted while secretly vowing to expel them from Tianyong City.
Shaogong inquired about alternative routes down the mountain, revealing his "unfulfilled wish" was to resurrect his lover, Xun Fang, the princess of Penglai. He explained that tomorrow was her death anniversary, and he needed to descend the mountain to mourn. Fu Qu, sharing information about the simple-minded Yunxi, deduced Qingxue's true purpose in coming to Tianyong City and expressed happiness at having her companionship.
Qingxue wanted to go down the mountain to question Yunxi further, but Fu Qu reminded her that leaving Tianyong City without permission was forbidden. Zhao Lin then volunteered to help, as he was scheduled to go down to buy supplies the next day and could take Qingxue with him. Shaogong attempted to sneak down, but Tusu discovered him and warned him of the risks. Seeing Shaogong's resolve, Tusu led him down a secret path.
By a river, Tusu accompanied Shaogong as he floated flower lanterns, listening to Shaogong's mournful tale of his beloved Xun Fang: he had fallen ill and sought medicine alone, only to return and find Penglai destroyed by a natural disaster, vanished into the Eastern Sea. Meanwhile, as Qingxue and Zhao Lin returned to Tianyong City, Qingxue learned that the person who knew about the simple-minded Yunxi had died, leaving her unsure if he was indeed the Yunxi she sought.
Zhao Lin spotted Tusu and Shaogong by the river and considered telling Ling Duan, but Qingxue stopped him, and he readily agreed to her request. At that moment, Qingxue's bracelet lit up, signaling news of Feng Guangmo, prompting her to release spirit butterflies to locate him. Looking at the flower lanterns, Tusu experienced fragmented memories of his childhood and mother, but couldn't recall clearly.
Shaogong comforted him, also reflecting on his own past and the tragic loss of Princess Xun Fang. A masked figure in black secretly infiltrated the sword pavilion to steal the Sword of Burning Solitude. Sword guardian, Sister Hong Yu, confronted the intruder, and they fought. The masked figure escaped, but Sister Hong Yu managed to sound the alarm. Tusu, recognizing the alarm as an invasion warning, rushed back with Shaogong.
On their way, they were ambushed by a group of black-clad assailants. Lingyue suddenly appeared, saving them from the attackers, who then fled. Tianyong City disciples surrounded the masked thief, but were all knocked unconscious. Qingxue arrived, her bracelet glowing. The masked figure noticed her and began choking her. In her mind, Qingxue silently called out for Feng Guangmo. Tusu, Shaogong, and Lingyue arrived, with Lingyue ordering the masked figure to release Qingxue.
Upon seeing Qingxue's tears, the masked figure hesitated. Lingyue seized the opportunity, attacked, injuring the masked figure, who then escaped. Qingxue collapsed unconscious. The Head Reverend reprimanded Tusu and Shaogong for leaving Tianyong City without permission, but both took full responsibility. Lingyue and Sister Hong Yu interceded, arguing that the priority should be to find the masked intruder.
When the Head Reverend questioned Sister Hong Yu about any unauthorized entry into the sword pavilion, Shaogong admitted to entering to refine medicine. Tusu realized the medicine was for himself and was willing to accept punishment for it. Sister Hong Yu confessed she had allowed Shaogong in, confirming he had no ill intentions. The Head Reverend chastised Sister Hong Yu for dereliction of duty, but Tusu, feeling responsible, accepted punishment, as did Sister Hong Yu.
Lingyue suggested allowing them to atone by finding the masked figure. Seeing their loyalty and unity, the Head Reverend dropped the matter, instructing Lingyue to carefully guard the Sword of Burning Solitude and Tusu. Qingxue awoke, inquiring about the masked figure, and Fu Qu told her he had escaped. Lingyue visited Qingxue, asking why she had called out "brother" when she was being choked.
Qingxue was evasive, so Fu Qu explained Qingxue's situation with her missing brother and urged Lingyue not to press further. Lingyue complied and left. Qingxue, remembering her bracelet glowing during the encounter with the masked figure, was now convinced that he was her long-lost brother. Lingyue ordered increased security throughout Tianyong City. Meanwhile, an Elder from Youdu arrived, seeking Reverend Zi Yin.
The Head Reverend received her, explaining that Reverend Zi Yin was in reclusive cultivation and offered her lodging for the night. The Youdu Elder insisted on inspecting the Sword of Burning Solitude before leaving, but the Head Reverend refused, citing Reverend Zi Yin's secluded status. The Elder persisted, using the recent theft attempt as justification. Angered, the Head Reverend instructed Lingyue to escort her to her quarters. On the way, the Youdu Elder asked Lingyue if he knew anyone named Yunxi, but Lingyue said he did not. As Lingyue escorted her, they happened to meet Qingxue.
