Er Gouzi, an outcast in the village, recounts the past story of a wolf demon who adopted a human child but was later betrayed and captured by that child. He feels that humans are ungrateful, even worse than wolves, and mentions Daoyuan, the former master of Tiezhuguan. Lingyue comforts Er Gouzi, winning some favor for himself, especially after sharing sweet potatoes with Fu Qu, which reminds Er Gouzi of the wolf demon's past adoption.
Lingyue recognizes Er Gouzi is possessed by the residual consciousness of this wolf demon. Despite unhealed old injuries, Lingyue fights the powerful wolf demon residual consciousness, but is no match and is nearly injured. Daoyuan, also referred to as Daoyuan Zhenren, arrives just in time, saving Lingyue and repelling Er Gouzi. Er Gouzi looks at Daoyuan with many unspoken words but ultimately escapes. Lingyue realizes Daoyuan's connection to the wolf demon.
Daoyuan confesses that he is the child once saved by the wolf demon. He was later taken away by a Daoist priest to learn Daoist magic and eventually became a Daoist priest himself. He explains that he had to seal the "life-harming" wolf demon because it was evil, trapping it under cursed water within Tiezhuguan for a hundred years. This decision, made without considering his own willingness, served both to seal and protect the wolf demon.
Daoyuan reveals that he has been tormented by guilt and emotions for a century, believing he made a mistake a hundred years ago that destroyed his bond with the wolf demon and caused it to accumulate resentment. Later, Daoyuan, Lingyue, and Fu Qu find the injured Er Gouzi.
Daoyuan seals the wolf demon's power and residual consciousness within Er Gouzi, believing the wolf demon, moved by Tu Su's loyalty during their fierce battle, is not entirely without good intentions and has gained some understanding of true human affection. He decides to give the wolf demon a chance to reform, taking Er Gouzi with him to cultivate, determined to resolve the wolf demon's resentment, whether it takes a hundred or a thousand years.
Lingyue and Daoyuan are deeply moved by the profound bond between Daoyuan and the wolf demon. Meanwhile, Lei Yan, having discovered that Yuheng is hidden within the Qingyutan, takes Shaogong and Xun Fang to a dilapidated mountain villa, suggesting a possible location for Yuheng. He keeps Shaogong and Xun Fang there, soft-imprisoning them in a dilapidated hut at the villa.
Lei Yan asks Shaogong to use his Dragon's Scale to awaken the memories of vengeful or earth-bound spirits in the forbidden area to find Yuheng. Shaogong uses the excuse that the Dragon's Scale requires specific timing to be used, thus not immediately agreeing to Lei Yan's demand. Shaogong is deeply suspicious about how Lei Yan knew he possessed the Dragon's Scale.
Xun Fang deliberately suggests that Tong Yi, also referred to as Jìtóng, might have been the one who revealed this information to Lei Yan. Rú Qìn watches over Tong Yi, who is being treated by a doctor. The doctor informs them that Tong Yi will wake up in a few days. Rú Qìn, relieved, sternly demands Lan Sheng return home with her, even threatening him with Xiang Ling. Lingyue arrives in Jiangdu and immediately tries to capture Xiang Ling.
Lan Sheng hears Xiang Ling scream, and then Lingyue and Fu Qu surround Xiang Ling. Xiang Ling struggles to escape and flees to Peach Blossom Valley. Lingyue traps Xiang Ling there, telling her to leave Lan Sheng and Tu Su, and Xiang Ling, seeing Lingyue, thinks he wants to "extinguish" her. Lan Sheng steps forward to protect Xiang Ling, blocking Lingyue's pursuit and allowing Xiang Ling to escape.
Lan Sheng firmly believes Xiang Ling has never harmed anyone and that Lingyue should not treat her that way, expressing great anger at Rú Qìn for constantly trying to harm Xiang Ling. Back home, Lan Sheng blames Lingyue for hurting Xiang Ling. Rú Qìn argues with him and, in anger, hits Lan Sheng again.
Lan Sheng becomes even more resolute, vowing to marry only Xiang Ling and stating he would rather die to be with her, which leaves Rú Qìn and Lingyue helpless. He then angrily leaves. Rú Qìn is furious and pounds her chest, though Lingyue tries to comfort her by saying Lan Sheng is young and immature. Rú Qìn, however, smiles bitterly, believing Lan Sheng is infatuated with Xiang Ling and impossible to persuade.
Lan Sheng searches for Xiang Ling in the rain, crying and kneeling. Yue Yan comes to shelter him with an umbrella, but Lan Sheng directly states he only loves Xiang Ling, stunning Yue Yan. Lan Sheng subsequently develops a high fever from the rain. Rú Qìn watches over him, apologizing when he wakes up. Lan Sheng continues to be fixated on Xiang Ling, even stating he wants to die and become a ghost to be with her.
Lingyue also tries to persuade him, but after Tu Su learns of Lan Sheng's wild talk, he tells Lingyue that he understands Lan Sheng's feelings, sharing how his own mindset changed after falling in love. Tu Su also tells Lingyue that there is no real difference between humans and demons, with both having good and bad individuals, and hopes Lingyue will give Lan Sheng and Xiang Ling a chance. Lingyue realizes he went too far and goes to Peach Blossom Valley to find Xiang Ling, calling out to her as she tries to run.
