Feng Qingxue stood firm in her decision to leave Youdu, intending to return once she found her childhood friend Yunxi and her brother, Feng Guangmo. Her friend, Huan Huan, expressed concern over Qingxue's repeated escape attempts and her impending role as the Holy Lady. However, Qingxue believed the recent resurgence of the Burning Solitude Flame's energy at the Nuwa Temple indicated trouble with either Yunxi or the sword itself.
She trusted that her spiritual stone could sense her brother's presence and that finding Yunxi would lead her to Guangmo, whose body was never found after he disappeared eight years prior. Meanwhile, in Youdu, Granny Youdu informed the elders that her health had deteriorated after the failed attempt to seal the Sword of Burning Solitude eight years prior.
With the sword's energy growing restless again, she feared her time was limited and wished to quickly pass the Holy Lady position to Qingxue. Though the elders worried about Qingxue's youth, Granny Youdu lauded her intelligence and sense of responsibility, convinced she could safeguard the ancient sword and lead their clan to prosper. She sorrowfully mentioned the loss of Guangmo, affirming Qingxue as Youdu's sole successor and hoping the Goddess Nuwa would protect her.
Granny Youdu recalled that Reverend Ziyin had taken the Sword of Burning Solitude and the child (Yunxi) years ago, under the assumption he could control its malevolent aura. Now, it seemed the sword's menace might once again plague the mortal world. At Tianyong City, Hong Yu summoned Lingyue, noting the intense evil aura emanating from the Sword of Burning Solitude. Lingyue inquired about the cause.
Hong Yu explained that Tusu had been punished after Ling Duan deliberately provoked him, causing Tusu to feel deep injustice. She elaborated that the Sword of Burning Solitude, imbued with centuries of malevolent energy, easily stirs human resentment. Since Tusu and the sword shared a symbiotic connection, if Tusu harbored ill feelings, the sword could gain control.
Hong Yu urged Lingyue to warn Tusu to maintain a calm and peaceful mind, free from anger, to prevent the sword from manipulating him. She also revealed that Reverend Ziyin had entered a retreat to heal and would re-emerge every three years to reinforce the seal on Tusu. Reverend Ziyin had also concealed the red mark on Tusu's forehead to avoid suspicion.
He specifically instructed Hong Yu to tell Lingyue to prevent Tusu from practicing sword riding and to keep the true reason for Reverend Ziyin’s injury a secret from Tusu. Lingyue found Tusu kneeling outside Reverend Ziyin's meditation chamber, pouring out his heart. Tusu questioned the purpose of his swordsmanship, feeling isolated due to his evil aura and the fear of harming his fellow disciples.
He recounted how Ling Duan had framed him, and none of his peers had spoken up in his defense, deepening his sense of being an outcast. Suddenly, Reverend Ziyin's voice appeared on the door, delivering a powerful message: "Restrain oneself to meet standards, discern conscience, use the sword for justice, heart and mind will be free of guilt." This profound guidance brought Tusu clarity and emotional release.
Later, Lingyue brought Tusu new clothes, made by Hong Yu, and a bowl of warm congee. Seeing Tusu's melancholic mood, Lingyue encouraged him to join him in the pursuit of immortality, suggesting they could seek further guidance from Reverend Ziyin upon his return from retreat. Tusu agreed to follow Lingyue's counsel.
As Lingyue prepared to depart for a demon-slaying mission for the Head Reverend, he subtly handed Tusu a magical item, whispering a caution to use it wisely, before bidding him farewell. Fu Qu and Ling Duan, curious about the exchange, pressed Tusu to reveal what Lingyue had given him. Tusu unveiled a small bell. When Ling Duan attempted to snatch it, Tusu playfully shook the bell.
To their astonishment, Ling Duan and Zhao Lin found themselves uncontrollably dancing and crashing into various objects. The magical prank lasted for two painful hours, leaving them furious. Ling Duan, aching and humiliated, vowed revenge, plotting to use the upcoming new disciple recruitment, which he was overseeing in Lingyue's absence, to expel Tusu from Tianyong City. Venturing into the mortal world, Qingxue consulted a map, hoping to pinpoint Tianyong City.
She stumbled upon a scene where armed martial artists surrounded Ouyang Shaogong, who calmly played his zither. Impatient with his unending music, the martial artists attempted to forcefully seize him. Qingxue intervened, but her pleas were ignored. Undeterred, Ouyang Shaogong used his enchanting zither music to control their movements, compelling them to leap into a nearby river, a sight that greatly amused Qingxue. Intrigued, Qingxue asked Ouyang Shaogong how he had achieved such control.
He casually revealed that he had deployed a hallucinogenic incense for three hours prior to her arrival, making the martial artists susceptible to his music. When Qingxue questioned his choice to play the same tune repeatedly, he retorted that he lacked the inclination to play multiple pieces for those he disdained. Ouyang Shaogong then inquired about Qingxue's solitary journey. She fabricated a story about searching for a childhood friend, then eagerly devoured his freshly roasted fish.
As he watched her eat, Ouyang Shaogong was momentarily lost in thought, reminded of a past lover. He then noticed she had consumed the fish's belly and explained, to her surprise, that it contained the worms he used for bait, though she cheerfully remarked that worms tasted good. After introducing themselves, Qingxue asked about Tianyong City.
Seeing her unwavering determination to find her friend there, Ouyang Shaogong suggested they both apply as new disciples during the upcoming recruitment, and Qingxue readily agreed. Upon their arrival at Tianyong City's registration area, Qingxue was informed that the sect did not accept female disciples. Ouyang Shaogong eloquently argued that no written rule prohibited it, accusing Ling Duan of being arrogant. Ling Duan, overseeing the registration, adamantly refused their applications.
However, Fu Qu appeared, and Qingxue, with flattering remarks, swayed her to consent to let her register, with Fu Qu promising to speak with her father, the Head Reverend. Once inside Tianyong City, Qingxue continued her search for Yunxi, but to no avail. Ling Duan then announced the final assessment: surviving a night in Jade Valley, a place known for its nocturnal spirits.
Those who emerged safely by the hour of Mao (5 to 7 am) would pass the rigorous examination. Ling Duan approached Tusu, instructing him to lead the new disciples into Jade Valley. Tusu initially declined, but Ling Duan provoked him by invoking Reverend Ziyin's name, compelling Tusu to agree. Tusu led the group to the valley, then sat alone, seemingly detached.
Ouyang Shaogong, suspecting Tusu might be Qingxue's friend, attempted to engage him in conversation, but Tusu, true to his reserved nature, ignored him completely, forcing Shaogong to retreat awkwardly. As night fell, some new disciples began to grumble about Tusu's perceived lack of protective ability, scoffing at the idea of monsters appearing so late. Their words were cut short by sudden rustling in the trees, and bizarre, green creatures emerged from the forest, sending everyone into a terrified frenzy.
Tusu, however, merely rose calmly and observed the chaos, even counting the number of monsters. Unbeknownst to them, Ling Duan and Zhao Lin were secretly releasing several monsters from deeper within the forest before covertly departing. Qingxue, reassuring a fearful Ouyang Shaogong that the creatures were merely spirits, joined Tusu to watch the unfolding scene. When a monster attacked and wounded a new disciple, Tusu immediately sprang into action.
He instructed Qingxue and Ouyang Shaogong to escort the others to safety while he engaged the monster. As they observed, Zhao Lin, overcome by concern, rushed back to offer assistance. Tusu incapacitated one monster just as Zhao Lin arrived, telling him to quickly notify Ling Duan. At that moment, another monster ambushed Tusu from behind. Ouyang Shaogong, without hesitation, pushed Tusu out of harm's way but was captured himself. Tusu and Qingxue immediately gave chase.
Ling Duan, who had been secretly watching from the shadows, smirked at the turn of events. During the pursuit, Qingxue discovered Ouyang Shaogong's satchel. Tusu urged her to turn back, but she steadfastly refused, using her magic to aid in tracking Shaogong. Their search led them to a cave, where Ouyang Shaogong was being guarded by two monsters. Qingxue devised a plan to distract one of the creatures, allowing Tusu to rescue Shaogong.
With Qingxue's diversion, Tusu successfully freed Ouyang Shaogong. However, when a monster lunged at Qingxue, Tusu bravely intervened, shielding her from the attack. Seizing the opportunity, Ouyang Shaogong unleashed a powerful magical item, which not only killed the monsters but also allowed the trio to escape the cave unharmed. Back at Tianyong City, Qingxue and Ouyang Shaogong were commended by the Head Reverend.
Qingxue credited Tusu for saving them and inquired about his injuries, but Ling Duan interjected with disparaging remarks about Tusu. Fu Qu then questioned the unexpected monster attack. Ling Duan, ever eager to deflect blame, falsely accused Lingyue of failing to properly contain the creatures. Fu Qu sprang to Lingyue's defense, leading to a heated argument that the Head Reverend quickly quelled, declaring the matter closed. Later, Fu Qu introduced the new disciples to their peers.
Ling Chuan immediately recognized Ouyang Shaogong, hailing him as a divine physician who had once saved his family's lives. Fu Qu asked Ouyang Shaogong why he sought to learn sword arts at Tianyong City. Shaogong stated his desire to use immortal powers to aid more people, prompting Qingxue to playfully quip that he probably just wanted to "deal with" more people.
Zhao Lin then inquired about Qingxue and Ouyang Shaogong's relationship; Shaogong, opting for discretion, simply said they were from the same village. When he asked about Tusu, Zhao Lin dismissively referred to Tusu as a "monster." In the dining hall, Ling Duan and his cohorts glared at Tusu with disdain. Qingxue and Ouyang Shaogong approached Tusu to ask about his injuries, but Tusu remained aloof, ignoring Ouyang Shaogong's concern and walking away coldly.
Zhao Lin, observing Ouyang Shaogong and Qingxue's discomfort, began to badmouth Tusu, advising them to steer clear of him. Ling Duan then attempted to recruit Ouyang Shaogong into his faction, but Shaogong politely declined and left. Later, as Tusu was attempting to heal himself, Ouyang Shaogong arrived with medicine. He skillfully acupunctured Tusu and forcefully began treating his wounds.
To his surprise, Ouyang Shaogong discovered that Tusu's injuries were not external but caused by a potent poison residing within his own body. After a brief moment of levity, Ouyang Shaogong proceeded to administer further treatment. The next morning, Ouyang Shaogong brought Tusu a healing tonic. Ling Duan and his group burst in, determined to provoke Tusu, but Ouyang Shaogong deftly countered their taunts.
Zhao Lin reminded Tusu of his chores for the day, but Ouyang Shaogong intervened, offering to perform them in Tusu's stead. Ling Duan escalated the confrontation, prompting Ouyang Shaogong to directly question their involvement in releasing the monsters in Jade Valley. Ling Duan and Zhao Lin vehemently denied the accusation, daring Ouyang Shaogong to provide evidence and threatening his expulsion from Tianyong City if he couldn't. Ouyang Shaogong remained unperturbed.
Tusu, weary of the constant animosity, asked Ling Duan why he bore such a grudge. Ling Duan bluntly stated it was because Tusu was a monster who had harmed their master and posed a potential threat to them all. After Ling Duan departed, Tusu asked Ouyang Shaogong how he had deduced their involvement with the monsters. Ouyang Shaogong meticulously laid out his reasoning, confirming his suspicions about Ling Duan and Zhao Lin.
He also pondered the mysterious poison he had found within Tusu's body. Meanwhile, Qingxue bribed Fu Qu with fruits, seeking information about Tusu's past. Fu Qu, in a moment of candor, revealed that Tusu and Lingyue were biological brothers, but Tusu had suffered a severe illness as a child, resulting in memory loss. He had been found and taken in by Reverend Ziyin. Fu Qu then cautioned Qingxue to keep this revelation secret.
Qingxue felt a pang of disappointment, still uncertain if Tusu was indeed Yunxi and where to continue her search. Driven by her persistent hope, Qingxue made her way to Reverend Ziyin's residence, Lin Tian pavilion, where she encountered Tusu. Tusu tried to send her away, but as she turned to leave, Qingxue looked back and asked him directly if he was Yunxi.
