Gu Jinzhao is surprised to see the jade paperweights she previously gifted to Chen Yanyun being used as prizes in the riddle game. She realizes that by offering such an expensive item, Chen Yanyun is subtly signaling that the gift was too lavish. To maintain her reputation and ensure they both remain "crystal clear" from any suspicion of bribery or favoritism, she vows to win them back.
Meanwhile, the game continues as Ye Xian rewards a fellow student with a firelock for solving his puzzle. Gu Jinzhao eventually wins back her gift by solving Chen Xuanqing's riddle; she correctly identifies the answer as a "Pestle" (Chun) by cleverly connecting the wood radical with the earthly branch for "noon" (Wu). Later, the Crown Prince, still disguised as Lord Wang, wanders off and discovers a painting in a private room.
He is deeply impressed by the artwork and expresses a desire to own it. When asked for her opinion, Gu Jinzhao observes that the "Taige script" used in the inscription shows over a decade of disciplined practice, suggesting it was painted by a mature and respected scholar. While she acknowledges its majestic spirit, she critiques the work as feeling somewhat superficial, as if it lacked genuine emotion.
Chen Yanyun, who had been listening from behind the door, reveals himself as the artist. Gu Jinzhao is mortified to have criticized his work to his face and quickly begs for forgiveness, but Chen Yanyun is magnanimous. He gives the painting to the Crown Prince and then easily solves Gu Jinzhao’s own abacus riddle, which had previously stumped everyone else. On the Double Ninth Festival, Gu Jinzhao visits Baoxiang Temple to pray for her grandmother’s health.
There, she encounters Ye Xian, who has sneaked out for a mountain hike but suddenly suffers a flare-up of his chronic heart condition. Since it is a day off and his guards have no medicine on hand, the situation becomes dire. Gu Jinzhao takes decisive action, instructing her maid, Qingpu, to help her. While Qingpu applies pressure to Ye Xian's Danzhong acupoint, Gu Jinzhao uses her hairpin to stimulate his hand acupoints, successfully stabilizing him until he regains consciousness.
As Ye Xian is carried down the mountain for further care, Gu Jinzhao finds her own path blocked by guards who are clearing the way for a high-ranking noble. Impatient to return home, Gu Jinzhao searches for a shortcut and accidentally witnesses a group of assassins attempting to kill the Crown Prince. However, the attack was anticipated; Chen Yanyun and officials from the Bureau of Justice had leaked the Crown Prince's location as a trap to draw out the conspirators.
During the skirmish, Chen Yanyun rescues Gu Jinzhao. Terrified that she will be silenced for witnessing such a sensitive event, Gu Jinzhao pleads for her life. Chen Yanyun forces her to swallow a pill—which he describes as a way to ensure her silence—and promises that as long as the secret is kept, her family will remain safe.
The subsequent interrogation by Zhang Ling reveals that the assassins are led by a man surnamed Xiao, believed to be Xiao Qishan, a former advisor to the late Prince Chengqing. It becomes clear that Prince Ruichang has been employing the late prince's old followers, suggesting he still harbors deep resentment over Prince Chengqing’s death and is plotting against the current regime.
Chen Yanyun and Zhang Ling agree to cooperate closely under their mentor’s direction to handle the fallout of this attempted coup. On the way back, Gu Jinzhao admits to Chen Yanyun that she has finally remembered seeing him once before: the night she stole a lantern before her coming-of-age ceremony. As they speak, she confesses her dislike for the capital, finding its strict rules stifling compared to her childhood in Tongzhou.
She fondly recalls the vibrant docks, temple fairs, and the spectacular molten iron fireworks her grandmother used to arrange, which are forbidden in the capital. Chen Yanyun listens quietly, noting that his own ancestral home is also in Tongzhou and is currently managed by her grandmother. Soon after, Chen Yanyun asks Gu Jinzhao to help him with a private matter: settling the family of his late friend, Nie Fengming, a former Cloud Cavalry official.
Gu Jinzhao discovers that Madam Nie and her young daughter, Xiangyun, are being harassed in Fentiao Alley by greedy relatives who intend to seize the family assets. Gu Jinzhao's servants intervene just in time to stop the looters. She relocates the family to her silk shop for safety and provides them with string puppets and medicine.
When Gu Jinzhao asks Chen Yanyun to provide more permanent help for the widow and orphan, he refuses to be officially linked to them for political reasons. Undeterred, Gu Jinzhao decides she will take care of the Nie family herself, ensuring her actions do not jeopardize Chen Yanyun's position.
