Gu Jinchao felt incredibly unwell, prompting Chen Xuanqing to suddenly scoop her up in his arms to carry her away. Shocked by his boldness, Jinchao struggled and demanded that he put her down immediately. At that moment, Chen Yanyun arrived, witnessing the scene, and delivered a swift, resounding slap to Xuanqing’s face. The blow only fueled Xuanqing's long-simmering rage. He lashed out, shouting that if Yanyun had not stolen Jinchao from him, they would have been together long ago.

Xuanqing accused his adoptive father of hypocrisy, claiming Yanyun only brought him into the Chen family to exploit his potential. He argued that Yanyun's attempt to control his life and arrange his marriage to the Yu family was nothing but a calculated plot to steal Jinchao under the guise of protecting his future. Xuanqing insisted that Jinchao had loved him first, bringing up the letters they had exchanged and the kite she had flown for him.

Yanyun, consumed by fury, drew his sword to silence Xuanqing once and for all. Jinchao quickly stepped between them, urging Yanyun to calm down and not make a scene since the grandmother and the others were nearby. Reluctantly, Yanyun ordered his servants to throw Xuanqing out.

Turning to her husband, Jinchao argued that she had done nothing wrong and that he had no right to take his anger out on her, warning him that if he walked away now, he should not bother coming back. However, a conflicted Yanyun simply walked away, asking for space to calm down. Meanwhile, Master Yao paid a visit to Wang Xuanfan, expressing his concerns that Yanyun had caught wind of their past crimes regarding Yanhong.

Xuanfan was baffled, confident that his execution of the woman years ago had been flawless and left no traces. When Madam Wang joined them, struggling to recall who Yanhong was, Xuanfan reminded her of the woman Prince Chengqing had gifted them. Growing anxious, Xuanfan ordered his men to dig up any dirt on Yanyun, while also investigating Xuanqing’s background in Xuzhou to see if he could link him to the canal bandits.

Sinking into deep sorrow over his rift with Jinchao, Yanyun turned to heavy drinking. Mr. Jiang arrived to counsel him, while Chen Yi defended Jinchao, pointing out that she had actively avoided Xuanqing for days and was entirely blameless. Jiang warned Yanyun that Xuanfan was already sending men to trail him and had made contact with highwaymen from Zhending Prefecture. Despite the danger, Yanyun insisted on proceeding with their original plan.

When Jiang mentioned that Jinchao’s maid, Qingpu, had pleaded for his return because Jinchao was waiting for him without eating or sleeping, Yanyun bitterly dismissed the claim, unable to believe she would lose sleep over him. Yanyun later confronted Xuanqing to deliver his ultimate judgment. He informed Xuanqing that his engagement to Yu Wanxue was officially canceled and that he was being sent to serve in the provinces.

Yanyun declared that Xuanqing’s selfish nature made him unfit for office in the capital, but if he managed to truly serve the local people well, perhaps Yanyun would respect him. When Xuanqing begged for mercy, citing his academic achievements and imperial favor, Yanyun countered that Xuanfan was already digging into his biological father’s past, and leaving the capital was the only way to save him. Hoping to settle matters, Jinchao summoned Yu Wanxue.

Wanxue was devastated and confused, explaining that her father refused to speak of the cancellation and Xuanqing had shut her out. Jinchao gently explained that they had weighed the situation and concluded that the marriage would not be a happy one. Wanxue admitted she had realized Xuanqing’s heart belonged to Jinchao, remembering how his eyes had been fixed on Jinchao even while speaking to her.

Although Wanxue claimed she did not mind, Jinchao insisted they could not stand by and watch her jump into a doomed marriage, advising her to forget him. With Yanyun refusing to return home for days, Jinchao signed a divorce letter and sent it to him, determined to see if he was truly willing to let her go. The letter left Yanyun deeply heartbroken.

In an effort to keep up appearances and promote her business, Jinchao hosted a tea gathering for the wives of the grand secretaries. Madam Wang deliberately tried to humiliate Jinchao after ruining her own fabric during a cutting demonstration. Jinchao elegantly defused the situation by suggesting they piece the ruined fabrics together to create a patchwork garment for charity, earning praise from the other ladies.

Green with envy, Madam Wang maliciously brought up Jinchao's childhood rumor, mocking her father’s demotion and her second uncle’s arrest as proof of her cursed fate. She warned Jinchao not to bring ruin upon Yanyun. Their sparring was abruptly cut short when a maid rushed in to report that Yanyun had been ambushed and severely injured near the Ding Mausoleum.

As Madam Wang smugly remarked that her warning had come true, an enraged Jinchao slapped her across the face, warning that if anything happened to Yanyun, she would hold Madam Wang personally responsible and make her pay with her life. Back at the Wang mansion, Xuanfan assured his terrified wife that he was not behind the ambush, knowing that a Grand Secretary orchestrating the assassination of another was unprecedented.

While he briefly wondered if the Grand Secretary (Lord Fu) was behind it to frame him, he quickly dismissed the idea, confident that Lord Fu still needed him and would protect him. Jinchao rushed back to care for the gravely wounded Yanyun, weeping over his unconscious body. When Yanyun finally awoke and asked why she was crying, Jinchao tearfully confessed that she had only written the divorce letter because of his coldness and refusal to return home.

Yanyun admitted he had been angry that she kept Xuanqing's pestering a secret, and equally furious at himself for not realizing his love for her sooner. Moved by his confession, Jinchao kissed him. Yanyun then explained that the assassination was a ruse; knowing Xuanfan’s men were tailing him, he had staged the ambush to trap his rival, though his physical injury was genuine because he had been too distracted by her divorce letter to properly dodge the arrow.

Shortly after, Lord Fu arrived at the estate. The imperial physician examined Yanyun, noting how close the arrow had come to his heart before leaving to write a prescription. Once they were alone, Lord Fu tried to plead for Xuanfan, suggesting they put the matter to rest. Yanyun revealed that Xuanfan’s captured spies had already confessed, and explained how he had provoked Xuanfan in court to force his hand.

When Lord Fu dismissed Yanyun's grievances as petty, Yanyun brought up the severe summer floods and the twenty-three breaches in the Huai River embankments, revealing that fifteen of those failures were due to corrupted materials. He coldly pointed out that six of the responsible officials were Xuanfan’s disciples, while the remaining nine were Lord Fu’s own.
