> Resumos de A Splendid Match
As the New Year approaches, the Gu family prepares for a significant journey to their ancestral home in Daxin to celebrate the grandmother’s sixtieth birthday. Gu Dezhao instructs that the gifts this year must be exceptionally generous, especially to honor the Fifth Lady, a noble daughter of the Marquis of Changxing who is currently pregnant. While the family readies for the trip, Gu Jinzhao’s mother remains behind, citing a worsening cough that has left her frail.
Nanny Zhao confides in Jinzhao that the mother’s absence is strategic; the ancestral family has long been eyeing her substantial dowry, and staying away prevents further pressure to move back. Jinzhao realizes that her father’s decision to establish his own household years ago was a calculated move to protect his wife’s assets from the financially struggling, yet outwardly grand, Gu elders.
Upon arriving at the ancestral manor, Jinzhao is struck by its immense scale and opulence, which even rivals the wealthy Ji family. She questions how her uncle, Gu Deyuan, can maintain such extravagance on his salary as a fourth-rank Assistant Censor-in-Chief, only to be told the wealth is inherited. Inside, the family gathers to pay their respects to the grandmother.
The atmosphere is soon thick with gossip as Gu Lian, prompted by letters from Gu Lan, interrogates Jinzhao about a rumored engagement to the Liu family and her frequent meetings with the young heir, Ye Xian. Jinzhao remains composed, sharply correcting the distinction between a marriage proposal and a formal engagement. she reminds her cousins that as a daughter of the Gu family, such rumors tarnish everyone's reputation, and firmly asserts her authority as the elder sister.
The arrival of the Fifth Aunt and the high-status Ye Xian momentarily shifts the focus. The family gathers for an opera performance by the Chuncao Troupe, where Ye Xian intentionally seats himself next to Jinzhao. He attempts to engage her in a discussion about the tactical errors of Cao Cao, but Jinzhao, wary of the surrounding eyes, ignores him and makes an excuse to leave.
While she is away, Gu Lian and Gu Lan continue to disparage her, mocking her merchant-class upbringing and her supposed lack of refinement. Ye Xian follows Jinzhao into the garden to return a handkerchief she dropped, but their encounter quickly turns into a heated argument. He teases her about the rescue at the City God Temple, revealing he saw the Third Master of Chen, Chen Yanyun, save her from the river.
Jinzhao is mortified by his boldness and refuses to reclaim the handkerchief when the Fifth Aunt appears, fearing the implications of a private exchange. Later, during a group embroidery session meant to please the grandmother, Jinzhao intentionally produces a crude, moth-like butterfly to hide her true skill and distance herself from the handkerchief Ye Xian still holds.
When Gu Lian mocks her upbringing, Jinzhao retaliates by accurately identifying Gu Lian’s Golden Cicada Ruyi hairpin as a gold-plated counterfeit from the Ji family’s own workshop, leaving her cousin humiliated. In a misguided attempt to help, Ye Xian gives Jinzhao’s exquisitely embroidered handkerchief to Gu Lan, who presents it to the grandmother to prove Jinzhao’s talent. Afterward, Jinzhao finds a wounded cat and attempts to help it, leading to a moment of truce with Ye Xian.
He assists her with medicine but remains cynical about interfering with fate. The tension breaks when Ye Xian confesses he was only angry because she had stood him up after he sent her an invitation. Jinzhao is stunned, realizing she never received any such message, which points toward Gu Lan’s interference. Jinzhao confronts Gu Lan that night, making it clear she knows about the hidden invitation.
Though she acknowledges Lan’s feelings of displacement since her return, Jinzhao warns her that being a legitimate daughter by birth does not make her an easy target. She advises Lan to consider the family's overall stability before causing more trouble. Meanwhile, the Fifth Aunt senses Ye Xian’s growing interest in Jinzhao and warns him that her status is far too low for the Marquis of Changxing’s household.
To prevent a scandal, she abruptly orders him to return to their own manor. Back at home, Jinzhao turns her attention to her brother, Gu Jinrong, whose behavior has become suspicious. She tricks him into signing a high-interest "nine-out-thirteen-return" loan agreement to confirm that his handwriting matches a pawn ticket she discovered. Jinrong eventually confesses that he pawned his mother’s jadeite ring to pay for a shattered Chenghua doucai teacup, but Jinzhao suspects more lies.
After having him followed, she discovers that Jinrong has been acting as a tout for a gambling house, luring others into debt to pay for a private room. Disturbed by his lack of integrity, she realizes she must find a permanent solution to his gambling associations. In the capital, Chen Yanyun receives news of his nephew’s academic success but remains cautious of the attention it brings.
He is soon presented with a collection of rare Western goods sent by Gu Jinzhao as a token of gratitude for saving her life. The gifts, which include a double-barreled spyglass and a pair of spectacles, are perfectly suited to his needs. Though he initially finds the precision of her choices unsettling and considers discarding them, he ultimately chooses to keep the items, reflecting on the girl who seems to understand him more than she lets on.
