Following her sister Gu Lan's housewarming, Chen Xuanqing seeks out Yu Wanxue to make a shocking confession in the presence of Gu Jinzhao. Despite Jinzhao's warning for him to act with maturity, Xuanqing admits he loves another woman and suggests calling off their engagement. Devastated, Wanxue refuses to break the betrothal, pouring her heart out about her lifelong devotion to him. Touched and resigned, Xuanqing yields and agrees to proceed with their wedding plans as scheduled.
Unbeknownst to them, Chen Yanyun witnesses this tense encounter. Rather than investigating immediately, Yanyun decides to trust Jinzhao to tell him in her own time. After escorting her home, he immediately departs for the Wenyuan Pavilion, leaving Jinzhao feeling neglected. When he finally returns in the early hours of the morning, Jinzhao, concerned about his exhausting commute, suggests he simply lodge at Wenyuan Pavilion.
Mistaking her concern for coldness, Yanyun is momentarily defensive, but Jinzhao explains that she merely misses him, regretting that they have had no time to enjoy a simple stroll together since their wedding. Touched, Yanyun immediately takes her out for an impromptu morning walk. To avoid further complications, Jinzhao instructs her servants to bar Xuanqing from her courtyard and actively avoids him during meals and daily greetings, leaving Xuanqing frustrated.
Meanwhile, Jinzhao shifts her focus to the upcoming opening of Linxia Zhai. During a discussion with Gu Lan, Jinzhao agrees to receive the marriage proposal from Young Lord Mu at the Chen estate on Gu Lan's behalf, saving her sister from returning to their hostile ancestral home.
However, the grand opening of Linxia Zhai is quickly disrupted when Chief Steward Lai from Prince Ning'an’s mansion arrives with a band of men, accusing the establishment of harboring a runaway male opera actor named Xia Xiaohan. Gu Lan fiercely defends the business's policy of only employing and hosting women, demanding compensation if a search yields nothing. Officers from the Shuntian Prefecture swiftly intervene, sealing the premises under the guise of searching for a fugitive.
Recognizing the raid is a calculated strike, Jinzhao bribes a prefecture officer, who subtly hints that she should look into those her family has recently offended. Meanwhile, Yanyun's mother worries that Jinzhao's business ventures will ruin his reputation. Yanyun staunchly defends his wife, arguing that shutting down her shops would only show weakness to their enemies. Soon after, Yanyun's men uncover the mastermind behind the sabotage: Madam Wang.
Desperate to retaliate against Jinzhao for exposing her previous scandals, Madam Wang had used her illicit usury business to trap Prince Ning'an, who had pawned his imperial Iron Immunity Charter to her. By holding this dangerous secret over the prince and offering him the funds to redeem the charter, Madam Wang manipulated him into using his household guards and the Shuntian Prefecture to ruin Linxia Zhai's reputation.
Although Yanyun wishes to impeach Wang Xuanfan immediately, Jinzhao requests to handle the matter herself using her own tactics. She lures Madam Wang to a private meeting outside, pretending to repay a massive debt on behalf of her servants who supposedly took out usurious loans. Because illegal lending carries a brutal penalty of three hundred lashes, a terrified Madam Wang vehemently denies any connection to the loans.
Taking advantage of this denial, Jinzhao smugly declares she will keep the money and threatens to hand over any future debt collectors to the Shuntian Prefecture, leaving Madam Wang utterly outmaneuvered. With Madam Wang temporarily neutralized, Jinzhao tells her maid Qingpu that exposing the loans was merely a warning, and that revitalizing Linxia Zhai requires a powerful ally.
Meanwhile, Yanyun learns of a major scandal in the Armaments Office, where the Dai family—relatives of the Chief Grand Secretary's wife—supplied moldy cotton for winter robes destined for border soldiers. Seeking to aid his wife, Yanyun plans to leak this information to Jinzhao. However, before his plan is executed, her cousin Ji Yao arrives and informs Jinzhao about the winter robe crisis, presenting her with the perfect opportunity to secure a high-level alliance.
