At the Xingdaosi office, Ye Xian is delighted to learn that Gu Jinchao has been seeking him out for a meeting. Eager to see her, he instructs his subordinate to remind him to bring a newly acquired headdress as a gift. However, his joy is short-lived when Xue Qinglan arrives.
After punishing the guard who let her in, Ye Xian is stunned by her revelation: Chen Yanyun has officially proposed to the Gu family, even securing the wife of Grand Secretary He as a matchmaker to ensure the news spreads throughout the capital. Refusing to believe it, Ye Xian rushes to the Gu residence.
Fearing for Jinchao’s reputation now that she is betrothed, Old Lady Gu orders the inner gates locked and sends her second son to intercept the young noble. Inside the courtyard, Ye Xian’s sister—who is married into the Gu family—asks Jinchao if she has feelings for Ye Xian. Jinchao clarifies that she has always viewed him only as a close confidant. Overhearing this, a heartbroken Ye Xian confronts her. Jinchao admits to the engagement and confesses her love for Chen Yanyun.
In a fit of rage and grief, Ye Xian draws his blade, nearly causing a tragedy before the Gu family manages to usher Jinchao away through the back door. Meanwhile, the Emperor summons Chen Yanyun. While Grand Secretary Fu Hailian objects to the meeting on legal grounds and leaves in protest, the Emperor reveals his true intent: he wishes to protect the Marquis of Changxing (Ye Xian’s father) from Fu’s attempt to prosecute him for lèse-majesté.
The Emperor tasks Chen with finding a way to save the Marquis without openly defying the Grand Secretary. Chen recognizes this as both a secret mission and a test of the growing rift between him and his mentor, Fu Hailian. Ye Xian later ambushes Chen Yanyun’s carriage, attempting to kill his rival.
Chen subdues him and coldly warns him that the Marquis of Changxing is facing total ruin; if Ye Xian continues to prioritize personal grievances over his family’s survival, he will lose everything. Following Chen’s subtle guidance, Ye Xian personally leads the arrest of his father but then voluntarily submits to imprisonment alongside him.
Chen instructs his associate, Mr. Jiang, to publicize Ye Xian’s "jealous" street brawl and his subsequent sacrifice for his father, creating a wave of public sympathy intended to give the Emperor a pretext for leniency. The scandal creates tension within the Gu family. Ye Xian’s sister begs Jinchao to intervene, but Old Lady Gu, terrified of being implicated in a capital crime, threatens the sister with a letter of divorce. Jinchao, however, stands firm.
She agrees to help, noting that the two families are already too entangled for a divorce to shield them. Meeting with Chen Yanyun, Jinchao learns that Ye Xian’s imprisonment is a calculated move to keep him alive. At the same time, Fu Hailian grows suspicious of Chen’s ties to Ye Xian following the events in Shanxi. To test Chen’s loyalty, Fu orders him to personally interrogate the Marquis. Chen realizes he is being watched and proceeds with the interrogation.
In the dungeon, the Marquis urges Ye Xian to find a way to escape and care for his mother and sister. When Chen arrives with a pre-written confession, the Marquis denounces him as a traitorous official. Driven to fury by Chen’s demand for a signature, the Marquis seizes a blade and attempts to strike him down.
